Friday 9th September 2016 8.30 am – 5.00 pm Everyday Champion’s Centre Jessop Close Newark-on-Trent NG24 2AG
Ceo’s MessAge In the last year we have reached 18 years of age, embarked on major new exciting projects and completed resources and launched them in the international arena, with our first world conference presentation. So it seems that there’s no time like the PRESENT for me to PRESENT to you the 2016 soundLINCS Conference PRESENT! The PRESENTS will all become clear, I promise! This year we have been successful in being awarded funding from Arts Council England’s Grants for the Arts programme, which has seen the beginning of New Tricks, our very own Older Adult Music Service across Lincolnshire. We have launched our stunning First Notes App on the App Store and Google Play, the digital incarnation of the incredibly popular and enduring First Notes Resource Pack, containing more than 60 unique activities across a range of categories. Please download it, play with, and review it! Your thoughts and feedback are invaluable to us and also helps to raise our profile on a wider level. We have of course continued and developed many of our existing projects - Project Y NOTT, soundWELL, Groove and Grow, Fusion and Good Vibrations, as part of soundLINCS Fund C, working across the East Midlands as a National Foundation for Youth Music key strategic organisation. We have been making exciting new inroads with programmes like Frequency, Download and Making Noise, which has begun sessions in four new venues and took its first step into the digital world with its new online festival! We always like to ring the changes regarding conference venues and after two glorious years at Hill Holt Wood we are delighted to welcome you to a new venue this year. The Everyday Champion’s Centre, with a very pertinent name and some fantastic facilities that we hope to harness throughout the day, although I know sawdust toilets will be sadly missed! As always the conference gives us the opportunity to get together with friends and colleagues old and new – this year we have welcomed 15 brand new Music Facilitators, four new Board members and a new addition to the core team in Matthew! Following the inclusion of our stakeholders last year and the overwhelming positive feedback, we couldn’t not invite them this year. We are once again fortunate to be joined today by a selection of our keen supporters and colleagues from the music, non-music and the academic sectors. We have a fantastic programme for the day that will give you the opportunity to learn, reflect, investigate, interrogate, network, and to enjoy the company of the soundLINCS family. It is no coincidence that soundLINCS has a very similar name to the leading UK Community Music organisation, Sound Sense. Why? Because back in the olden days it was the only place for a young pup of a Community Musician to go to, to find likeminded folk!! Over the years soundLINCS has been indebted to its Director not only in the advocacy and strategic development nationally for the sector, but also for the therapeutic, mind massaging discussions, challenges and conversations that have occurred over the years between the Sound Sense Director and myself. Therefore I am personally excited and delighted to introduce my professional guru and long-time friend Kathryn Deane to be part of the conference today. By being PRESENT today, I hope that you’ll enjoy the day and leave it with plenty to think about, some new friends, and inspired to go out there and continue to be your very own Everyday Champions! Consider it as just one of a number of PRESENTs to you! Very best wishes, Nikki-Kate Heyes MBE

soundLINCS PRESENT Framework PLAN
Prepared &
PRESENT is used in the sense of having the opposite meaning to absent.
professional
The PRESENT Framework reflects soundLINCS’ vast experience of continuously providing community music workshops since June 1998. The workshops are planned and delivered by Music Facilitators either employed or contracted by the company. The workshops are reviewed and improved by participants, practitioners, settings, partners, Music Facilitators and soundLINCS.

Training & CPD
The PRESENT Framework seeks to answer questions that are widely discussed within the community music world and situates them within the generic system model of Plan, Do, Review, Improve. 1. Is there a simple Code of Practice that community musicians and Music Facilitators can adopt and work with? 2. What can a company expect from the freelance Music Facilitators that it works with? 3. What are the core ingredients for providing high quality music workshops to groups? 4. Is there a visual model that can represent the workshop process for any duration, group or setting? 5. How can companies be more effective when supporting the professional development of Music Facilitators and when gauging the progress they have made? 6. How does CPD, Training and Development fit in with freelance Music Facilitators’ professional practice and portfolio careers?
PRESENT builds on recent developments in community music that soundLINCS has contributed to: 1. Music Education Code of Practice developed by Sound Sense and Youth Music in 2011 2. “Do, Review, Improve” the Quality Framework developed by Youth Music 2012 – 2014 PRESENT also builds on research done by soundLINCS to develop a Traineeship framework. This framework analysed and created links between Music Education Code of Practice, Do Review Improve, Level 4 Certificate for Music Educators, Gold and Silver Arts Award. PRESENT is an acronym which, hopefully, makes it easier to remember the key words in the right order! The colours are influenced by the popular RAG rating system (Red Amber Green). Red is avoided because the system is never stopped – it is always in motion, or preparing for motion.

Kathryn ran community music projects across England before becoming Director of Sound Sense, the UK association for community musicians, in 1995. She has carried out advocacy work across government; she is an Executive Committee Member of the Music Education Council where she is currently leading its Music for All Action Group; and a partner in the Paul Hamlyn Foundation special initiative ArtWorks, a workforce development programme for participatory artists. She writes and edits extensively on community music, evaluates community music practice, and is an adviser to undergraduate and postgraduate courses. She is Consultant, contributor and deviser on national occupational standards, codes of practice, and accredited qualifications. Now approaching retirement after 21 years at the helm of Sound Sense and nearly half a century working in the arts, her message is simple: “I came into community music convinced of its power to change lives for the better, and I leave it even more convinced. Keep making music with people. Keep changing lives.”
