it’s not a dream anymore... It’s strange to think, Sound, Phrase & Fury was once just a simple little dream, just a

tiny spark of an idea. All it took was one small shard of hope, one tiny little push, to pierce my heart, entrap my mind and all together create a colourful explosion of beauty that is a universe full of grand possibilities. All it took was someone to tell me, “It would be a waste not to try.” There is a common desire so many of us hold: to create something, be something, experience something that will make our lives so much more than what we simply see. It is the dream of fulfilling one’s biggest dream. And after a few short months, SOUND, PHRASE & FURY, pushed me (and my colleagues) forth. I, once a young aspiring music journalist sprouting in a time when magazines and newspapers were taking backseats to blogs and twitter feeds, had tried my best to adapt my aspirations to this fast-paced computerized world. And to this day, I vow to never stop trying. Since the launch of the magazine, I have felt eternally fueled by undying passion and this infectious idea that nothing is impossible. The world we live in tends to bend and break those who dare to dream, but those of us at SOUND, PHRASE & FURY know the payoff is in ultimately giving in to the unceasing desire to just try and try, despite the sacrifices, the troubles and tough times.

We have spent the last year learning how to man the curves, and create something that stands alone, immensely significant in this new internet-based world. This magazine is a result of years of defining what it is SOUND, PHRASE & FURY is meant to be, finding a way to achieve it and taking sound advice to “just do it.”

History In early 2011, Winnipeg-based writer, Janet Adamana, started a small music blog, entitled T up the V. The premise was to focus solely on independent and unsigned artists from all over North America. After two years, and a new name, Sound, Phrase & Fury has grown from a small blog to a bimonthly magazine, focusing on independent/unsigned artists and industy professionals from all around the world.

After graduating from Creative Communications at Red River College in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Janet Adamana did what most of her fellow graduates did not. Instead of toting piles of resumes, scheduling luncheons with industry professionals and flexing her newly acquired social skills at networking parties, the now SPF editor-in-chief, packed up her car and hit the road. Armed with nothing more than a suitcase full of clothes, a back seat full of snacks and a heart filled with the need to escape the intimidating realm of job-hunting, Adamana was headed to her first outof-city concert.

HISTORY

This one $13 show, sparked a two-year stint of constant concert chasing and traveling. Adamana attended show-after-show, in several different states and provinces. She experienced first hand, the impact live music had, not only on herself but also everyone involved, from fans to bands and everyone in between. Inspired by her travels, Adamana began T Up The V, a small music blog dedicated to promoting up-andcoming musicians from all over North America. The blog ran from early 2011 to early 2012, when it was then renamed Sound, Phrase & Fury.

A fan of old school media, Adamana also wanted to create an ode to the ideas of the world she grew up in. She transferred the blog into a digital magazine, successfully melding favourable elements of newage and old school. “I love the idea of blogs. They’re so quick and convenient. But I have always loved magazines, ever since I was a little kid,” says Adamana. “The glossy pages, the super large photos and the creativity with colours and layout. Magazines are more than just words on a page, they are works of art.”

The new moniker was inspired by a live performance video by New Zealand’s indie-pop troupe, The Naked and Famous. Our READERS Since its launch in January 2013, Sound, Phrase & Fury magazine has been attracting, on average, 419 readers per issue, some of which are from as far as South America, Asia & Oceania.

The majority of our readers and website followers

are between the ages of 16 to 30. Most of them reside in North America, but some are rooted as far as Indonesia, and Australia. They are interested in the specific genres we cover: pop rock, rock, pop punk, hip-hop, indie-rock, postcore/hardcore, indie-pop, acoustic, folk, screamo, emo and punk. Our readers grew up in the Internet generation, and are extremely web and tech savvy. They are constantly in touch with their peers, and are always looking for the next big thing. They love being the first to discover anything and everything, from new artists to up-and-coming clothing trends.
