The noughties (or so they would grow to be called) have hit and whilst pop music is thriving, rock music was moving it’s way away from Britpop and the harsh northern accents and sometimes melodramatic tales into one full of aggression and oppression! Nu Metal was gonna be huge, but sadly the anger wouldn’t last and we’d be back to melodramatic tales with the invention of emo (some of which was alright).

LIMP BIZKIT More nu metal titans. They were angry at times and at others they were just damn right obnoxious, but it’s all in the honour of good music. Who can forget the first time they heard ‘Break Stuff’? (Well you, if you’re one of the people who hasn’t heard it yet). It’s angry and obnoxious and yet superbly written all at once, yet so simple. What Limp Bizkit brought to the rock industry is the ‘Who cares?’ attitude when they recorded whatever the fuck they wanted, literally.
AFI Or A Fire Inside started at the beginning of the 90’s with a proper punk sound. But that was not the sound to bring them success. 12 years later it arrived with a much more mellows out sound, but one that still rocked nonetheless. Album you should check out: Sing the Sorrow. The Art of Drowning is fantastic, but it’s only an EP. Sing the Sorrow is an amazing album and finally got me hooked on AFI. They’ve brought a sense of carefree fun to the industry, each album offering something a bit different to spice it up.

THE HYPE THEORY GLORY DAYS The Hype Theory are 5 piece band from Chelmsford, Essex and they play a very infectious blend of pop, punk and rock, with brilliant shout/ sing-a-long choruses and with a powerful British edge. Late last year the band released the debut mini album ‘Glory Days’ and since then have been heavily featured in Kerrang! radio and TV and the video for ‘Kid At Heart’ has been heavily featured on Scuzz TV. We were lucky enough to catch up with singer Katy Jackson before the band heads out on a UK tour with Adelaide and Franko to tell us all about the album. WORDS: PAUL ESP

mainly because they took me back to when I heard them first time around. Reel Big Fish have been touring relentlessly for years and you can see why they’ve got such a huge following, you can tell why they do what they do, its all about the live shows. This was a sold out show with an age range somewhere between 14 and 40 years, proving their longevity in this business. I love their cover of “Brown Eyed Girl” and it was nice to hear it live. “Ban The Tube Top”, “Where Have You Been”, “Snoop Dogg Baby”, “She Has A Girlfriend Now” and “For All The Suckers” also all went down really well, and all in all it was a great show packed with great songs, and great vibes.
The encore was just as pleasing with, probably their most well known songs “Sell Out” and their cover of “Take On Me” these two songs ended the night perfectly, leaving everyone smiling. it was just a shame it had to end so soon. Will definitely catch these guys again next time they play Cardiff.

We listen to so many genres of music that it’s hard to pin point where the influences comes from. If we had to collectively choose one band then it would have to be Queen. Their style of music evolved so much over the years and they were constantly pushing boundaries yet still produced massive tunes with mega chorus’s.
How do you guys come up with your songs? We all go into a field and put on face paint, light torches and pray to the gods of rock and roll to send us ideas from above. If that doesn’t work then we just have a jam together and come up with our own.

They’re trying too hard to be something that they can be naturally as they’ve proved in the past. The album is not bad, it’s a blend of the “pop-rock” with the odd “old-skool” kick here and there, something to please the masses, but unfortunately it doesn’t please this reviewer, because what I want is for them to just let go and simply stop trying to be something they already are at heart.. 6/10 Words: Anneka Sillitoe

DEAF HAVANA
FOOLS AND WORTHLESS LIARS It felt like this album took an absolute age to come out. The anticipation and expectations surrounding it were pretty high and it definitely does not disappoint. This four piece from Kings Lynn, Norfolk have produced a cracker of an album absolutely packed with great songs. Produced by Matt O’Grady it sounds as great as you would expect but it’s the quality of the songs and singer James Veck-Gilodi’s voice that really makes this album special. There are 13 tracks here and not a weak one among them. Tracks like ‘I Will Try’ and first single ‘I’m A Bore, Mostly’ are huge sounding
and dislike of the city. It’s one of my favourite songs with a massive chorus and James’s vocal performance on the song is nothing short of fantastic.
Another thing to mention about the album has to be the lyrics. Many bands can write a good tune but most times the lyrics let them down, that’s not the case here. The lyrics are very clever, concise and honest. ‘Little White Lies’, the next single featuring the considerable vocal talents of Portia Conn really should be the one that ignites radio and gives this band the success they really do deserve. The bar has definitely been set for UK rock scene with this album. 10/10

CANDLEBOX
LOVE STORIES & OTHER MUSINGS Candlebox are a multi-platinum selling alt rock band from Seattle, Washington and this is the band’s fifth studio album. As the title suggests this definitely is a more contemplative and love themed collection of songs than previous offerings from the band. That’s not to say it doesn’t rock, opening track ‘Youth In Revolt’ kicks things off in spectacular style and shows the guys haven’t mellowed with age. Singer Kevin Martin sounds better than ever and handles the more melodic tracks just as well as the heavier one. (cont)
