Initially, what made me interested in studying Architecture was the connection between creative freedom and the parameters of establishing something in the real world. And still today, the combination of creativity and technicality, hard work and passion, perfectionism and freedom, is what makes me fall in love with architecture. Through my education, found that my interst lie in the pursuit of designing exterior spaces, as much as interior spaces and connections that lie in-between. Additionally, sustainability, contextual sensitivity, the poetics of space and public space design are only some of the architectural design elements that have found to be the most fascinating, As a fresher, am determined to gain experience and continue my learnings whilist pursuing my passion for design and detail. In my employee role, hope to bring innovation, hard work, determination and a fresh perspective. Finally, would love to make a contribution to the architectural world on my journey towards becoming a Professional Architect.

This was an internship for 16 weeks of my semester 9 as a part of my curriculam from university. During this period was exposed to the all kind of works that take place in an architectural firm. After working for 4 months in the office, have got an understanding of how a project gets carved out of multiple iterations, discussions, challanges and determination. And what it takes to reach to satisfaction of client and the architect. And the balance between the understanding of both. am very greatful to my principle architects for their support and guidance

Belgaum, Karnataka Belgaum, Karnataka

This was an internship of two months after the COVID-19 lockdown was removed and colleges were still closed. used my free time to work in the office as an intern, during this period got an initial understanding of the practices that take place in an architectural office. This has given me a practical understanding of the ins and outs of the office’s daily services. am very gratfull to my sir Ar. Praveen Bavdekar for giving me the opportunity and involving me in the early design process of a mixed use building (commercial + residential apt).

AMONGST THE ARAVALIS

City Museum-Plaza-Library

Location : Jaipur | Studio mentor Prof. Manoj Ladhad

The idiosyncratic nature of our profession often leads and misleads by his own knowledge and worldly views, largely trying to please the eye instead of mind and soul, without a deeper meaning and making it belong to the context, terrain, culture, tradition not understanding many more complexities of juxtaposed layers, which are being questioned in the current times.

Being in design industry one needs to unlearn. The issue lies in how current system of education and peer knowledge has corrupted our innate sensory capabilities.

“We believe that humanity’s toughest problems occupy the same ground as their solutions: the space between people and their environment.”

-overview At the MIT School of Architecture + Planning (SA+P)

An architect and architecture all along has been very intuitive, How does an architect | Student crest his ideation to create and crave out a niche, deriving the skill to be able to create true abstractions, to reason, to question, to arrive at the appropriate first few lines or sketches and the entire process.

GALLERY AND HERITAGE CENTRE

Location : Madgao,Goa

STUDIO BRIEF

The program arises out of observing the existing condition of the built heritage that is undergoing slow decay. Ways of rejunivating the place need to be deliberated upon. This would include queries regarding how to keep the culture and built heritage alive. The program involves exploring ways of modulating scale to create presence at the precinct level but an appropriate one at street level considering the proximity of the heritage buildings flanking the site. It would also have room to look at the source of heritage and dwell in means of expressing it architecturally.

PROJECT HABITAT 28

Low rise- high density HABITAT for a varied socio- economic group.

Location : Mysore,Karnataka

STUDIO BRIEF

The term habitat aptly defines the living condions in which we work, relax, and live happening in relaon to the environment surrounding us and the way we connect to people. Thus, it becomes important to develop a habitat that integrates community living for a user group. The idea of the program is also to create different volumes and experiences through innovave sections that unfolds the experiences of day and night and also different seasons.

The varying volumes also help in experiencing the unbuilt at different times of the day. Emphasis is on climate to necessitate an inventivenesn task. The task is to relook at this portion of the city with a comprehensiveand with a more sympatheticsmall scale process of renewal/regeneration.Each site is comprised of 28 dwelling units (of varied socio-economic group). The aim is to give significance to the collective living through sharing spaces & infrastructure. The task also expevcts the design to be flexible in which each house is considered simultaneously as a unit and in relation to the whole group, without losing the quality, rigor and standardization that the social housing requires. The stress is also on creating an identity or uniqueness for individual units without much variation in sizes in the living patterns

The Site – The site previously was a housing to accommodate EWS with a densityof 300 pph.

Each student is allowed to take on one site for their intervenon. (approx. site area – 1400 Sqm and FAR- 2)

Given – 28 Dwelling units of 75-80 Sqm each Climate – Warm & moderate

The word “Agraharam” literally means “the higher ground”, it has various etymological meanings. It indicates conglomeration(haram) of the first among four varnas(castes). Agraharam also indicates cluster of houses with a temple on the agram(extreme tip) of the street. An Agraharam is a grant of land and royals income from it, typically by king or noble family to religious purposes, particularly brahmins. It is usually the center of the village where the brahmins lived. (As the agraharams belonged to brahmins they were elevated as it was believed that would depict their elevated stature in society.)

The agarharam were constructed according to its own principles of architecture. Each house opened out into the street, each had a vasal-thinnai, rezhi, thazhvaram, adukkalai and kottil. They have small inner courtyards, which provide adequate daylight to the house.

During the Maratha reign in Thanjavur, many agarharams were attached to the chatrams, established by the rulers.

In 1765 a chatram* was built in the name of Rajakumaramba Bayi, the second wife of Tulaja II. In 1777 an agaraharam was built attached to chatram in Chakravarambapuram.

There were 24 houses, 12 of which were destroyed in fire. Sulakshanamba Bayi donated lands to the chatram established in her name and the yield of 3,000 kalams of paddy from these lands, was shared among the 30 families in the agraharam.

In addition to these agarharams attached to chatrams, agarharams were established elsewhere too, sometimes as a gift to ministers. One such kind of agarharam in Udaiyalur.

Land Reform Act was implemented in 1970s, where the land was taken away from people, only the ones who tilled the land retained it, the ones who owned the land and had the workers work for them retained it, but the produce produced was divided equally between the tiller and the owner. This means that this Agraharam has been existing from almost 10 generations.

Udaiyalur initially was renowned as ‘Boopathirajapuram’ or ‘Sri Kanteyapuram’. Similar to all the other agraharams Udaiyalur was also owned by Brahmins.

Brahmins found a way to survive through their intellect and made workers work because water was abundant. Since then, they got into agriculture and settlement was necessary to control the produce.

The plots were divided depending on the plateau.

Houses shared a common wall, this would be to make lateral expansion of a house impossible, it enhanced social interaction among the residents. The roof of all the houses are inclined at an angle of approximately 30degrees. And the houses are made of clay tiles, flat tiles and pot tiles, which helps in cooling of the house.

Every house had a thinnai where elders would sit and the children would play hide and seek. Hide and seek seemed like an ideal game to play in Agraharam. The doors of all the houses would be open throughout the day, children would find umpteen hiding places (wooden barrels, behind the wooden chests or lofts), which implies anybody who lives in Agraharam could walk into each other’s houses anytime. This shows the social bonding between people.

The Agraharam seemed to be an open society i.e., welcoming, because of which we could do our measure drawings.

The house was basically divided into thinnai, storage area, living space, utility and backyard (well was either in the utility or the yard).

“Nothing happens within an Agraharam which is not sooner or later brought to the knowledge of the entire community.” One of the ways in which news in the village travels in the Agraharam is from one thinnai to another.

The climate- The warmest month of the year is May, with an average temperature of 31.8 °C. December has the lowest average temperature of the year. It is 25.0 °C. The difference in precipitation between the driest month and the wettest month is 221 mm. During the year, the average temperatures vary by 6.8

°C. The eaves project to street and keeps the interior of the house i.e., thinnai cool, also avoids the glare from the sun.

No house in udaiyalur has first floor. This is because of belief that if a house is higher than the nearby Amman temple, then the family that has built such a structure will be ruined. Udaiyalur Agraharam is quiet, because most of the people are away for field or the tile factory established few years ago near the village. Not much of youngsters are seen in the village, many people are senior citizens, who have come back to their ancestral village.

Most of the houses have retained their period look, with their wooden pillars surrounding the courtyard, hick wooden doors with brass knobs, carved lintels and cavernous lofts. The houses here have carved Burma teak cots, swings, wooden barrels to store grains in wooden ladle holders. Residents of Udaiyalur have not given up their antiques to determined collectors.

The total geographical area of village is 485.07 hectares. Udaiyalur has a total population of 3,156 people. There are about 798 houses in Udaiyalur village, Kumbakonam town of Thanjavur district.

As we had observed the village map on Google as a pre-visit exercise, we had an idea of the village to be a grid with quadrants. It was also noticed that small stretches of houses similar to those within the quadrants flanked them to the north, north-west and the south-east. (as shown in the sketch)

REALIZING THE IMPORTANCE OF AWARENESS

“The city and it’s identity”

semester 09 : Design Thesis

Site location : Belgaum | Thesis guide : Prof. Prashant G Pole

1.1 Background

Have you ever played the game called Dumb Charades? It involves explaining phrases or name of a movie, a personality, a book or a TV show, etc. through acting. A person is not allowed to talk and is required to act out the name by using different gestures, facial expressions, and body language.

How interesting it would be to play this game with the name of cities !.. How many cities can be guessed in such a way? How many cities have their unique identity or character through which you can guess their name? This character could be portrayed by various things like food, culture, people, lifestyle, climate, geography, and so on...In the end, it reflects the physical nature of the place through landscape and architecture. Both these elements are contributed by various govt. and private bodies which are related to the development and by the individuals of the place. All of them are nothing but “the citizens” or “the public of the place”

Be it A planner, Politician, architect, or layman who is building his own house. It’s the responsibility of all to know the character/identity of their place and act accordingly to maintain it through the stages of development of that place.

“Development is important” Since the cities grow, adapt, expand and evolve. The needs of citizens change and the city has to be able to provide those needs. A newer technology is introduced every day. But development should not only be about bringing new technologies and expanding cities into extensions following the universal model of development everywhere. For example, A BMW is still a BMW even after so many years of evolution. New technologies, new era, and even new CEO of the company and still they have their own identity in world. The same goes for all the brands. Be it the Apple or the Rolls Royce. Their designers pay utmost attention to every single detail to keep their identity, Even though the world changes every single minute in those fields.

To maintain the identity of something. Firstly, Everyone should be aware of that identity. And to get that awareness, One has to be able to observe the aspects which defines the identity by experiencing it.

“To experience the qualitative value of a designed place consciously, there has to be a basic understanding of design by the users.”

Questions

-What is the Character/Identity of the city ?

-Why is the Character important ?

-How can the Character/Identity be retained, protected or cultivated ?

1.5 Scope

There are government and private existing departments or organizations that have similar agenda or goal such as

- Introducing a city to people

- Conservation of Heritage

- Development of a city

- Planning of a city

Realization of citizen’s potential & their role in city’s development decisions

SITE SELECTION

3.1|Location of intervention BELGAUM Why Belgaum ???

“Some cities have a stronger character which people are aware of and some cities have a little loose character which people are less aware of”. There is a physical environment that supports understanding the character of the city. This physical environment should be made aware then this awareness becomes the catalyst that helps to hold the character that citizens believe their city has. So it helps/aids in further development of the city

“The object of this edict is to enlighten the present and future citizens of Chandigarh about the basic concepts of planning of the city so that they become its gaurdians and save it from whims of individuals.”

the 1959 edict of Chandigarh

1.3 Hypothesis 1.4 Aim

-le corbusier

Cities are the result of built environment and landscape. They are built & developed by citizens and government bodies. To drive this development in the right direction to maintain the character of a place, The character should be known in the first place. And citizens should be proud of their identity to fight for it if the development is going in the wrong direction.

The research aims to design a place for citizens to participate in the decision-making process about the development of the city. A place to discuss, debate, and raise voice for the city. A place to portray the character and culture of the city, A place to know, learn, and share the identity of the city.

Le corbusier also believed that the citizens are the key players in this game and says in his 1959s edict of Chandigarh,

“The seed of Chandigarh is well sown. It is for the citizens to see that the tree flourishes.

- Reviving culture, Language, Literature etc.

These exhisting organisations are being considered majorly in the study. Also after refering to local news and articles, A perticular attitude was found amongst the citizens concerning to the city’s developement.

1.6 Methodology THE CATALYST

Some organisations that are known for their works

• INTACH

• SPIC MACAY

• INHCRF

• Kalamandir NGO

• Dept. of language and culture

• Dept. of planning

• UNESCO

• ASI

• IIA

• Public Works Department

• City corporations

• Ministry of Housing and Urban affairs

• Corporate Social responsibility

• Urban Developement Authorities

• Private Tourism companies

• NGOs like Kudumbashree

Now these organisations are working with similar goals for development of places, conservation of heritages, culture, Arts, etc. But all of them are working as individuals and may not have a common platform to come together Their role could be more influential and stronger if there is a body in each city working as a catalyst to bring them all together for a common good.

1.7 Objectives

ROLE OF THE CATALYST

• Creating synergy between various organizations and give them a platform to work on a common goal.

• Using the reach of these existing bodies to fulfill topics agenda.

• Influencing on the decision of concerned parties in development

• Providing a role for bodies like IIA. ( e.g. Influencing Indian Institute of Architects to take some initiatives, like IIM and IIT why does IIA have their own architecture school in city rather than having non active chapters).

• And may be have a program to work towards creating awareness in citizens of city about their city.

Awaremess and pride about the city and it’s identity amongst public

Belgaum being one of the cities under the government's smart city plan list and currently undergoing huge development sets this city as a best example to research the model of development and for comparison of post development to pre development situation.

Secondly, The survey taken includes responses of people from three different cities. Mysore, Bangalore, and Belgaum. It was s`een that the issue considered in this report is not a global issue but it is valid in certain cities of the world and the change is looked forward to in those cities particularly. Since Belgaum is one of the cities from the survey and most of the negative response was from this city, this makes it a perfect location for intervention.

Participation

The selected site is situated in hot zone of major official public establishments such as District court, DC office, city corporation etc. This supports the program developed on selected site for the study. Any activity that will happen on site can majorly affect on the city’s administartion. Also it boost the convinience for govt. officials to participate in activities on site thus generating interactions.

“All

The site is located in such a way that all the major routes converges at the RTO circle. These roads lead to important neighbouring places such as Goa and Kolhapur. The Old PB road shown in map was one of the busiest route before the National Highway existed connecting to Pune and Bangalore. This road still remains important to the city and site since it connects to Central Bus Stand of Belgaum city and all the buses arriving and departing from belgaum has a glance of selected site.

Design Ideas

Program focuses more on outdoor activites hence open spaces such as plaza, courtyads etc. becomes primary spaces in design approach.

After analyzing the language of city’s built and unbuilt spaces, It was noticed that the built has a very rectilinear geometry due to construction and structral limitations but at the same time the unbuilt defined by these are forming interesting irregular geometrical spaces.

These resulting spaces works the best as plaza since they are well defined and creates opportunities to spill out the programes hosted by the built around it. The angular nature generates axis giving directions to the user and leading them to resulted spaces.
