PwC reports Mergers and Acquisitions Surpass Ten-Year High The industrial manufacturing industry closed out a stellar year for merger and acquisition (M&A) activity, according to Assembling Value, a quarterly analysis of global deal activity in the industrial manufacturing industry by PwC US. Total deal value (for transactions worth more than $50 million) soared in 2014, reaching $127 billion, an increase of 163 percent over the prior year and surpassing the 10-year high of $92.4 set in 2006. Megadeals worth more than $1 billion were also in abundance in 2014 with 24 announced transactions worth $91.6 billion. “The strong momentum for manufacturing deals in 2014 carried into the fourth quarter as horizontal consolidation and divestitures of non-core business continued to drive robust activity,” said Bobby Bono, U.S. industrial manufacturing leader for PwC. “Companies are monetizing non-core or underperforming assets, leveraging scale in core businesses and considering joint ventures and new strategic alliances to expand into long-term attractive markets, particularly in developing economies with a growing middle class. In addition, management’s attention has shifted away from headcount reduction and cost-cutting programs toward growth initiatives and filling the talent gaps.” “China-involved deals in 2014 exceeded any year of the past 10; however, foreign buyers have become increasingly wary due to an oversupply of capacity, materials and debt in the region and local market consolidation. Given a perceived lack of innovation, inability to move up the value chain and cooling domestic markets, we expect Asian manufacturing companies to begin looking for opportunities in established markets in 2015,” said Bono. For information on Assembling Value and to access the full Q4 2014 report, visit: http://www.pwc. com/us/industrialproducts.

Monthly Confidence Index in Equipment Finance Remains at Three-Year High The Equipment Leasing & Finance Foundation Monthly Confidence Index for the Equipment Finance Industry (MCI-EFI) for February 2015 reports confidence in the equipment finance market is 66.3, a slight increase from the three-year high level reached by the January index of 66.1. This news comes on the heels of ELFA’s Monthly Leasing and Finance Index (MLFI-25) for January which indicates that new business volume is up 12% over the same period last year. Compared to December 2014, however, business volume is down by 48% - typical end-of-quarter, end-of-year behavior. When asked about the outlook for the future, MCI-EFI survey respondent William Verhelle, Chief Executive Officer, First American Equipment Finance said, “The economy continues to improve. First American is seeing increased equipment acquisition activity among the large corporate borrowers we serve. We are optimistic that lower energy costs, if they remain at current low levels, will drive increased U.S. economic activity in the second half of 2015. We are more optimistic about the U.S. economy today than we have been at any time during the past six years.” For more information and to view complete reports visit www.elfaonline.org.

Achieving relevance A new mindset, new organizational structure and the IT solutions that

make it work

Manufacturing is once again reinventing itself. From ground-level basics to the overarching strategies for growth and product innovation, manufacturing leaders are rewriting their game books. In plants, mills and fabricating shops worldwide, production workflows as well as management concepts are being revised, again. Few departments or job descriptions are exempt from review as companies shift priorities trying to adapt to the drastic changes in competitive pressures, market demands and disruptive technologies. Modern IT solutions are helping shape the new mindset and support the new organizational structure needed to compete today.

Forces Behind the Shift Necessity is at the fulcrum point of change. Manufacturers are making drastic changes because they heard the wake-up call, loud and clear. Stakeholders know the heavy toll the recent recession had on manufacturing. Plant closings, jobs lost, wages cut and work sent off shore dominated headlines for a decade, casting a cloud of doom on the industry that once employed the best and brightest entrepreneurs, engineers, research scientists and product visionaries. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly 4 million U.S. jobs were lost in manufacturing since 1998. In the 1970s, nearly 20

18

| IMD | April 2015 | www.IndMacDig.com

percent of all jobs were in manufacturing; today, only 9 percent. Technology undoubtedly takes some of the blame for lost jobs. Automation, robotics and advanced computerization drastically reduced manual tasks once done by laborers. At the same time, technology also deserves some of the credit for rekindling enthusiasm in the American factory’s ability to out-innovate global threats. Nanotechnology, 3D printing, smart sensors, drones, machine-to-machine communication, wearable devices and machine learning all have brought imagination back to manufacturing. A spark of innovative imagination is hardly enough to turn around an entire industry, though. To succeed, U.S. manufacturers must restore a sense of relevancy to their products, including a level of quality, value and service that the customer expects. Manufacturers must, once again, be closely aligned with the buyers’ motivations and triggers, whether the target market is a local geographic region or an emerging population cluster in Eastern Europe. A recent report, “Improving Business Growth by Achieving Resiliency” published by IDC Manufacturing Insights says that the current challenge goes beyond product design. Manufacturers must begin to see the issue as one stretching their thinking to include such intangibles as reliability and loyalty. “Companies must provide superior responsiveness and outstanding reliability in meeting fulfillment needs to ensure customer loyalty and to stay ahead of competitors. Manufacturers realize that line-ofbusiness resources must be aligned to customer requirements and processes calibrated to the customer,” the report says.

The customer experience can cover a wide range of activities, from online shopping portals to configuration tools that allow the customer to personalize a product and see a 3D rendering before the custom design goes into production. Product customization is rapidly becoming part of the new normal in consumer goods, being applied to products from clothing, shoes and jewelry to furniture, electronics and décor.

A spark of innovative imagination is hardly enough to turn around an entire industry . . . To succeed, U.S. manufacturers must restore a sense of relevancy to their products, including a level of quality, value and service that the customer expects.

Becoming Relevant Knowing today’s consumer is no simple task. With the influence of social media, online shopping and hundreds of omnipresent media sources, trends can change in an instant. To keep up with this pace, manufacturers have learned they must embrace these social tools, rather than resist them. Modern IT solutions help track and manage the vast amounts of online communications, from social media posts from disgruntled customers to websites where prospects can select and customize their own, personalized products.

The customer experience still also includes the basics, such as on-time delivery of as-promised goods. Accurate invoices, prompt answers to questions, reliable advice and friendly agents are all part of the fundamental deliverables that customers expect from retailers, distributors and manufacturers. As products become more complex and costly, the expectations for service also seem to rise. Today, the purchase of a product will often include the delivery, set up, on-site calibrations, performance testing and training of users.

The Demand-Oriented Value Chain Manufacturers today must strive to create a value chain which has one goal: meeting the consumer demand. This value chain can be long or short, regional or global, involve many suppliers and partners or be simplistic and direct. The successful demand oriented value chain tends to be: • Dynamic and cost-effective at all times. Manufacturers must be agile and quick to adapt to the changing profiles of their customers. This means assets and structures need to be adaptable and able to flexibly scale up or down as needed. • Service-centric and embedded with customer understanding. To reach the highest level of customer engagement, manufacturers must learn to use data from downstream partners, such as suppliers and resellers.

Special Focus Maintaining a Core Focus When manufacturers stretch out of their comfort zone to add more items in the product line, more customizations and service packages, they often struggle to maintain their core focus. It’s easy for the organization to become muddled. As manufacturers re-engineer their processes in order to ramp production back up to pre-recession levels, they are faced with the challenge of creating a new organizational structure that is lean and efficient, yet meets modern customer expectations. The old organizational hierarchy simply no longer fits their needs. More personnel must have access to critical data in order to make well informed decisions. Organizations can no longer expect to route all decisions from the ground level to top tier personnel for resolution, it’s too slow and limits the ability of front line personnel to engage with customers on a meaningful level. Authority must also be delegated to more downstream personnel so they can comply with the vast and complex needs of the entire customer base. When account managers, service representatives and line of business managers are given decision-making authority, they can become fully attentive and responsive to individual customers, such as offering purchase incentives, providing advice on upgrades, rewarding large purchases, expediting special orders or collaborating on custom designs. This decentralized approach does have its drawbacks if not managed carefully and supported by the necessary IT solutions.

Borrowing the ‘Flock Approach’ from Nature IDC provides an interesting illustration of an organizational structure that is resilient to change: a flock of birds in nature. Nature watchers have likely noticed how a flock of birds, herd of antelope, swarm of bees, or school of fish travels in groups and instinctively turns in unison, seemingly without communication. These organizational structures provide an excellent model which manufacturers can emulate as they reinvent their systems today. In nature, a system is considered resilient if it can adapt to changing circumstances while maintaining its central purpose. When it comes to manufacturing, resilience can be defined as the ability to adapt to fast changing market pressures without losing focus on core business targets. To achieve this state, manufacturers can borrow the flocking principle and become “simple at the core and diverse at the edges.” This means balancing the obvious need for process standardization at

20

| IMD | April 2015 | www.IndMacDig.com

the core with flexibility at the edges so front-line personnel can react to situations and engage with customers in a meaningful way.

It Solutions Support New Infrastructure It’s is clear that the old straight line hierarchy is an outdated concept, but the more modern structure which delegates authority must be carefully managed in order to maintain visibility. If not fully integrated into the company-wide value chain, it is easy for departments to become siloed, operating within a narrow sphere of influence and self-serving priorities. Modern ERP solutions play a critical role in managing a more dispersed, complex organizational structure, preventing gaps in communication and ensuring full visibility across the elongated value chain. Although manufacturers have been making great strides in improving communication channels, the explosive amount of information to be shared is challenging. Key software providers are responding and improving the ability to drill into details behind incidents and push contextual relevant data to the user, even before they make a query. Intuitive, predictive abilities of modern IT solutions help users—at all levels in the organization—understand the situational relevance of data and cut through the layers to hone in on the facts significant to a particular question. By turning to modern ERP solutions, manufacturers can create the organizational structure that is flexible and responds to customer needs with relevant products and services. Manufacturers can continue to reinvent the meaning of success, being resilient to outward forces, while still being focused on the core goal, pleasing customers. By establishing this new structure now, manufacturers can be well prepared for the next generation of consumer demand.

Cylinder Hone

field repairs Damaged, Scarred Cylinders Repaired In-Field Using Flexible Cylinder Hone

Versatile and easy-to-use, the cylinder hone can deburr and clean out passages or provide IDs with a super-smooth plateau finish free of cut, torn and folded metal. It can also be used for edge blending, plateau honing, polishing and chamfer operations.

Whether for smoothing out rough areas and high points, deburring, edge blending, cross hatching or removing cut, torn or folded metal, a flexible cylinder hone can be an indispensable tool for field repairs. Using this relatively inexpensive tool, parts such as carbide bushings, bore sleeves, hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders, and other cylindrical cavities can be resurfaced using a standard drill. For two industrial equipment manufacturers, it was precisely this type of field repair work that allowed them to salvage equipment that was damaged – through no fault of their own – and save their customer tens of thousands of dollars in replacement parts.

Scarred Valve Housings For Elmar, a food processing company that designs and manufactures filling machines for the food, beverage, petrochemical, personal care and pharmaceutical industries, a flexible cylinder hone saved the customer $30,000 in damaged valve housings after unexpected damage was caused prior to production. The company offers a variety of models, including rotary piston, bottom fill, gravity and pocket for filling liquids, high viscosity and solid particulates into plastic, glass, composite or metal containers.

22

| IMD | April 2015 | www.IndMacDig.com

The rotary piston models have a large, rotating bowl for product with 6 to 72 filling stations. Each station is built with a valve housing and rotary valve that dispenses a metered quantity of product. The tolerance between valve and housing must be within 1/1000th of an inch. It was this type of machine, a 45-station piston filler, Elmar sold to a customer for apple sauce and other food products. The food processor had recently taken delivery of the new equipment. However, construction continued within the facility, one floor above. As a result, a small amount of concrete and metal shavings had fallen into the filling bowl. When the equipment was started, the concrete particles and metal chips moved from the rotating bowl into the rotary valves, scarring the housings and damaging the valve plugs. The damage was significant enough that each of the 45 valve housings and plugs had to be replaced. The estimated cost for replacement was $60,000. “In this case, the machine hadn’t even run its first product yet,” says Thomas Dahlquist, Special Projects Manager for Elmar. “When you have a capital improvement project and the customer is looking at an expensive bill for replacement parts before production even begins, they want a quick solution that is cost effective.” Unfortunately, the valve plugs were damaged beyond repair. This comprised approximately half the estimated replacement costs. However, Dahlquist suggested an alternative solution. By honing each cylinder to remove any raised lips or high points and then inserting new valve plugs, the customer could save half the cost – approximately $30,000. The company was familiar with cylinder hones, having used them in the past in the manufacturing of

the valve bodies. In the past, they had used the FlexHone, specifically, in the field to hone out undersized or out-of-tolerance cylinders from time to time. The Flex-Hone, from Los-Angeles-based Brush Research Manufacturing, is a highly specialized abrasive tool that is instantly recognizable by its unique appearance. Characterized by the small, abrasive globules that are permanently mounted to flexible filaments, the product is a limber, low cost tool. Versatile and easy-to-use, the cylinder hone can deburr and clean out passages or provide IDs with a super-smooth plateau finish free of cut, torn and folded metal. It can also be used for edge blending, plateau honing, polishing and chamfer operations. Although the Flex-Hone can be used in automated production equipment, it can also be used with a handheld electric drill. The tool is ideal for field applications because it is self-aligning and self-compensating for wear, which facilitates closetolerance finishing work. To assist in the repair, Dahlquist travelled to the customer’s site with several 2.25” Flex-Hones. The total cost of the hones was less than two hundred dollars. In just over 4 hours, Dahlquist was able to hone each of the 45 housings to the appropriate specifications. To achieve the tolerance required between valve and housing, he utilized a dial bore gauge. “With the Flex-Hone, drill and a drill holder, we were able to rework each of the valve housings on the machine by hand,” says Dahlquist. “We were able to smooth out all the high points and insert the new valves.”

For Vektek, a manufacturer of hydraulic and pneumatic clamping systems, improperly machined cavities from an overseas third party not only impacted the performance of the product they were providing, but also created a potential safety issue. As a global supplier to the metalworking, tool & die and mold industries, Vektek must rely on their customer to ensure that the cylindrical product they supply is installed into a cavity with a proper surface finish, or it will not seal and function properly. The consequence of a leaking cylinder could be very serious since these Vektek devices hold workpieces stationary on machining fixtures. If the oil pressure in the cylinders drops due to leakage, the grip on workpieces would fail, requiring the machine to be shut down and production to halt. This became a very real issue when Vektek began having some problems with a major heavy equipment manufacturer customer in China that was not machining a cavity suitable for installation. “The trouble was that the customer’s cavities were not machined suitably for installation, a flaw in their finishing process was missed,” says Rod Nelson, Vice President of Vektek International Sales. “As a result, it appeared that the Vektek seals were leaking, a problem that was not a shortcoming in the cylinder design or quality, but nevertheless had to be solved at the customer’s site or these very expensive fixtures would not be useable.” Vektek advised technicians at the manufacturing plant in China to use the Flex-Hone Tool to properly surface finish the cylinder cavities so that the sealing problem would be eliminated. Nelson says the flexible hone is so useful to his customers in properly preparing cavities for his company’s products that Vektek has for many years specifically recommended the Brush Research tool in its product catalog and data sheets. “In all, 300 cavities were Flex-Honed, and 299 of the 300 cavities were saved and polished exactly to specification,” explains Nelson. “One cavity was slightly out of spec, but it also provided an adequate seal. So, in the end, we saved 300 very expensive holes.” For more information on Brush Research Manufacturing call (323) 261-2193 or visit www.brushresearch.com

Locking Tools in Place Tough to machine materials, aggressive metal removal rates and long awkward tool overhangs are machining conditions that require toolholders perform flawlessly and provide strong gripping force, high precision and vibration control. In most instances, toolholder systems that function using heat or hydraulics are used, but even these systems run the risk of cutting tools pulling out of the holders. To prevent such a catastrophe, a new toolholder system has been developed that locks cutting tools in place - eliminating cutter pullout. And, it does so using an innovative mechanical design. While mechanical toolholding systems provide incredible holding power, tooling manufacturers continue to actively develop systems that offer even more

security against cutter pullout. Many of the existing systems involve special grooved patterns such as reverse helixes, or other modifications, that must be ground into a cutter’s shank. These systems can limit what brands of tools can be used. Additionally, because there is an added manufacturing process of modifying cutter shanks, these systems prove to be a bit more expensive. Unlike systems that require modified tool shanks, the new system, called secuRgrip and pioneered by REGO-FIX Tool Corporation, uses a

26

| IMD | April 2015 | www.IndMacDig.com

special threaded insert or key that eliminates the need to alter cutters. The simple and effective design is part of the company’s well-established powRgrip mechanical toolholding system and one that allows the use of any off-the-shelf tool as long as it has a common standard Weldon flat on its shank. The secuRgrip further enhances the already extreme holding capability of REGO-FIX’s wellestablished powRgrip mechanical holder system. To lock a cutter in place, the small insert of the secuRgrip system is placed in the Weldon flat of a cutter. The bottom profile of the insert matches that of the Weldon flat, and its exposed side has a thread pattern that matches with those of internally threaded powRgrip system collets. Users hold the insert in place while sliding the tool into the collet. The collet is turned so that its threads engage with those of the insert, and the tool is then screwed all the way into the collet. This cutter-collet assembly is pressed into a powRgrip system holder, and a special external cap nut is tightened onto the holder for added pullout security. Users with existing powRgrip holders can easily transform their systems into a secuRgrip holder by simply threading the outside of any powRgrip PG 25 or PG 32 holder for accepting the cap nut. REGO-FIX can either supply the necessary thread specifications or factory-threaded holders. The secuRgrip holders accommodate cutter diameters from 0.472” up to 1.000”. And with holder body tensile strengths higher than those of the cutting tools being held, the secuRgrip holders will withstand cutting forces that could break the cutters before ever damaging the toolholder itself. As machine tool spindle speeds and feed rates continue to increase, the more critical a toolholder’s vibration dampening capabilities become. The better a toolholder controls or even eliminates vibration, the tighter its T.I.R. The tighter a holder’s T.I.R., the more it helps increase tool life as well as

Special Focus improves part accuracies and surface finishes. The powRgrip and secuRgrip systems ensure concentricity (T.I.R.) with deviations of less than 3 microns (0.0001”) for tool lengths up to 3 x diameter and length pre-adjustment with a repeat accuracy of less than 10 microns (0.0004”). The secret to these results lies in the interior of powRgrip. The system achieves high vibration dampening due to the functional contact surfaces between its toolholders and collets, and the collets and tool shanks. The concept absorbs vibrations better than do non-mechanical systems such as heat shrink holders. The powRgrip system absorbs vibrations by creating “material breaks.” The process starts with a cutting tool, typically made from anything from high-speed steel to carbide to cobalt, with each material having its own specific vibration frequency or harmonics. The cutting tool is held in a collet that is also made from a particular type of steel then inserted into a powRgrip toolholder made from a different type of steel. REGO-FIX’s use of different materials, all with their own unique harmonics/frequencies, creates

breaks or gaps. These gaps – between the cutter and collet, collet and toolholder body – provide a natural vibration-dampening capability. In leading European university testing, the vibration dampening capabilities of the standard powRgrip holder were proven to far exceed those of heat shrink-type systems. As mechanical designs, powRgrip and secuRgrip are also faster than other systems when it comes to exchanging tools. Removing a tool from a holder and installing another takes about 10 seconds. Heat shrink holders, on the other hand, must be heated, the cutter installed, then put in a chiller for 2 or 3 minutes before the tool can be used. Mechanical-base tooling innovations such as REGO-FIX’s powRgrip and secuRgrip provide shops with solutions for their machining challenges, especially those involving tough materials such as titanium and Inconel. With such toolholding systems, shops can increase cutting tool life, experience significant cost advantages and confidently run their cutting tools at the highest speeds and feeds to increase productivity while also improving part surface finish quality.

The

Future of

Gripping Clamping To conserve energy and reduce costs, more shops and machine tool builders are shying away from hydraulics and pneumatics and instead opting for gripping and clamping systems powered by electricity. This growing e-technology – while it may not spell the complete extinction of hydraulics and pneumatics – is the wave of the future in terms of efficient, precise, compact and lowmaintenance solutions. One company taking a serious lead in e-technology is Röhm GmbH, a manufacturer of clamping and gripping products that maintains the distinction of being a pioneer in electro-mechanical systems for the metalworking industry. Most noteworthy, the company’s recently released e-QUIPMENT line of clamping and gripping systems now make the concept of allelectric machine tools a reality. The line incorporates electrically powered steadyrests, clamping heads, grippers, cylinder systems (with and without through holes), clamp release units and tool locking systems. Among the e-QUIPMENT range of tools, the latest innovation is the EVS 50 electrical clamping system that activates power chucks on turning and grinding machines, minus any hydraulics or pneumatics. The EVS combines the strengths of mechanics with the precision control of electronics and operates on a standard external servomotor with 1.0 kW of power, making it compatible with several industry standard CNC machine controls. Also new to the e-QUIPMENT line is a servomotor-driven electrical steadyrest for turning and grinding machines. With NC controlled functionality, the steadyrest rigidly clamps and

30

| IMD | April 2015 | www.IndMacDig.com

supports long, shaft-type workpieces with O.D.s measuring between 15 and 170 mm. Machine tools equipped with electric clamping or gripping systems, such as those from Röhm, consume overall less energy. Unlike hydraulic clamping cylinders that require constant power to maintain necessary operating pressure, electrical clamps, for instance, use energy only when in actual use – typically to run the short duration of the clamp and release cycle or when clamping force modifications are needed. As a result, shops could, in one year and based on three shifts of operation, potentially save up to 13,000 kWh for one machine tool. The amount of energy saved is equivalent to the power consumption of four small family households. In addition to energy savings, electromechanical clamping systems deliver increased part accuracy through faster and more precisely controlled clamping. Because they are easily regulated via machine tool controls, the systems allow shops to optimize holding force and lift while a workpiece is being processed. Because clamping force can be adjusted during actual workpiece rotation, shops can, for example, reduce the tensile force and pressure of the electronic clamp for finish turning operations to eliminate the risk of workpiece deformation. This capability to precisely regulate clamping force on-the-fly makes it possible to process extremely delicate parts with maximum accuracy. When electrical components replace those larger ones associated with hydraulics and pneumatics, the result is a more compact, space-saving clamping and gripping system that requires minimal maintenance. Shops eliminate the need to clean, replace or dispose of hydraulic fluids and avoid any risk of environmental contamination from system leakage. The absence of hydraulics also makes for a clean, oil-free and quieter working environment. As the development of e-technology – electromechanical – systems continues to surge, machine tools of the very near future will consume less energy, require minimal maintenance and be more environmentally friendly. Also, shops will increasingly come to realize that the most efficient machine tools will be those that only use energy when actually performing a movement.

Mark? What is inspection marking and why should I know about it? Inspection marking is part of the quality control process that identifies pass or fail in most instances. Much more, however, is involved in determining who, what, where, when and how to apply the inspection marks. Inspection marking is driven by industry specifications set by organizations like ASTM, CE, OSHA, FDA, and other government and industry organizations. Groups like American Society of Quality aid the establishment of standards used by manufacturers so quality engineers and technicians can insure implementation and provide oversight. The marks are always impacted by product design and configuration and consider the product’s integrity. Critical information pertaining to the date code, lot or batch identification, and even heat number for metals is important to the inspection process. Other information that may be involved in the inspection marking includes the manufacturer’s identification (especially when multiple vendors provide components to an OEM for assemblies),

specific production line or work cell in which the product was produced and the country of origin. For added traceability it is not unusual to have the product serialized to narrow the range in the event of failure which can minimize the risk or loss for an organization. Special Focus marks might be a combination of alpha-numeric characters representing the work cell or production line, or a simple “X” and “O” can identify pass or fail. Automated systems now allow manufacturers to use symbols like 2-dimensional bar codes to serialize the end-product at this point. There are instances that permanent identification might jeopardize the product integrity making ink marking or laser etching a more feasible choice for inspection marking. Ink marking allows the application of a single dot to indicate “pass” or it can be color-coded differently for “pass” and “fail. Ink marking will require consideration of porous and non-porous material properties to sustain legibility before handling the product in the next operation. ” Laser etching can be applied without concern to dry-time. When a product does not pass and has been identified either for “Rework” or “Scrap” additional identification is required so that the product is quarantined to correct bins and locations. or exposed to the product while in operation. We are all familiar with food and auto-related recalls; most of us would agree that our military should be similarly prepared regarding combat ready devices. Have we given consideration to the many other items inspected such as pavement markings that aid our safety on the roadways or the lumber used in pallets to avoid the spread environmentally hazardous insects? How many other places in our everyday lives would inspection and related markings apply? Given the variety of products produced and manufactured we must further examine how the marks are applied. Plastic products differ from metals. The varying metals and their surfaces demand yet other considerations. Ultimately, one must give consideration to the placement of the inspection mark on the product and at what point in the production it will be applied to ensure its utility. For example, a welder must certify his mark at the time a weld is made. He is typically provided a personalized steel hand stamp or insert-style inspector hammer by his employer. Each welder in an organization would use a unique symbol or alpha-numeric combination. When machining a product, the inspection marking process might become part of the work flow specific to that work cell or production line. Often times this is done at a stand-alone inspection station where an inspector might use a rubber stamp or center punch tool with a pass or fail symbol or identification mark. Other times it might tie into an automated system using an impact press, dot peen or laser marking system. These

Profile

Sustainably Produced Hyd r aulic Components VOSS Fluid GmbH is a supplier of hydraulic connection technology. We spoke with Marco Schawohl, Division Manager Marketing, about corporate responsibility, ecological benchmarks and the in-house electroplating equipment. Editorial team: Mr Schawohl, please introduce your company briefly. Schawohl: VOSS Fluid is one of the world’s leading suppliers of hydraulic connection technology. We focus on application-specific system solutions for tube connections in stationary and mobile hydraulics. These include cutting ring couplings, tube forming systems and flange connections, amongst other products. We offer our customers all services from a single source – from project planning and engineering via production and assembly to economic logistics services.

44

| IMD | April 2015 | www.IndMacDig.com

Editorial team: How do you realize sustainable values? Schawohl: Sustainability is a central topic for our company. Our projects are shaped with vision. Besides business success, we also look at social and ecological benefits in everything we do. This begins with the overriding strategic and operative targets and ends with each individual employee acting responsibly. Editorial team: Please illustrate this with a concrete example. Schawohl: We have developed an extremely high-quality surface for our tube couplings: the corrosion protection VOSS coat. To achieve this quality level, we have even invested in a new electroplating equipment at our head office in Wipperfürth. This is one of the most modern such installations in Europe. Thanks to processes optimally configured to our needs, we are able to attain perfect surface results in production. It also

allows us to comply with the highest ecological standards – for environmental protection as well as for energy and resource efficiency. Editorial team: What results have you achieved? Schawohl: All emissions such as air, water and noise are far below the specified limit values. Instead of potable water, we exclusively use industrial process water. Another important aspect: We save more than 490 MWh each year thanks to the energy-efficient plant. That corresponds to an annual electricity consumption of around 160 residential units. We also restrict the use of chemicals to the absolute minimum necessary. This is achieved by using automated dosing pumps, amongst other reduction measures. In addition to this, the employees in our two-story electroplating installation work completely separated from the fully-automatic controlled process conveyors. Editorial team: Are people becoming increasingly aware of sustainability, in your opinion? Schawohl: The subject has certainly gained importance, but still offers a great deal of potential. As far as I am concerned, one of the most important tasks is to implement sustainability strategies across the board in business and society. The VOSS Company Group has long pursued this important path.

About VOSS Fluid GmbH VOSS Fluid GmbH is an internationally leading supplier of hydraulic connection technology. The company’s head office is in Wipperfürth and, with around 400 employees, it is part of VOSS Holding. The product portfolio comprises tube connections for stationary and mobile hydraulics, including cutting ring couplings, tube forming systems and flange fittings. VOSS Fluid as a development and system partner of international mechanical engineering focuses on application-specific system solutions. VOSS Fluid offers customers everything from a single source: from project planning and engineering via production and assembly to economic logistics

services. With its four own sales companies in Europe and Asia as well as further VOSS Group representations and a worldwide network of dealers, VOSS Fluid ensures at all times the reliable distribution of its system solutions. GMTA Introduces New Direct-Drive Gear Honing Machine New from German Machine Tools of America, the Präwema SynchroFine 205 HS gear honing machine features direct-driven, digitally controlled spindles for the tool and the workpiece, enabling precise, rigid synchronization. The Präwema Honing gear finishing process produces quality comparable to grinding results for spur and helical gears, as well as shafts. The machine’s software checks the stock allowance and workpiece runout and then optimizes the X-axis approach distance. Measuring the workpiece does not affect the cycle time and the process can reduce cycle times by 3 to 5 sec. The machine features a pick-up design to enable automation. The workpieces and dressing tools are loaded and unloaded by the workpiece spindle. The large X-axis travel enables placement of additional stations adjacent to the loading/unloading station inside the machine, such as a two-flank roll-checking device. Additional options, such as a dual-spindle model, are available to further reduce cycle times. For more information visit www.gmtamerica.com.

New High-Efficiency Intensifier Pump from Jet Edge Jet Edge has released the new iP60-30 60,000 psi, 30hp hydraulic waterjet intensifier pump. Designed for waterjet shops that desire the reliability of a hydraulic intensifier pump, but have limited power, the iP60-30 draws only 37 full load amps at 460vac or 74 full load amps at 230vac. It is capable of producing 0.6 gpm of ultra-high pressure water at a continuous operating pressure of 55,000 psi. Economically priced and easy to maintain, the iP60-30 is ideally suited for rural shops, R&D labs, schools, and small, budget-conscious waterjet cutting shops. The iP60-30 features a reliable tie-rod design that eliminates threads on the high pressure cylinders, end caps, and hydraulic cylinders. This reduces the likelihood of cracking and increases component life. Matched metal components prevent galling of hydraulic components. The iP60-30 includes a hydraulic accumulator to provide smoother hydraulic pressure, reduce spikes and prolong hydraulic pump life. For more information visit www.jetedge.com.

RÖHM Announces Orange Line The new Orange Line from RÖHM includes drill chucks, live centers, lathe chucks, and machine vises. The standardized product selection offers valuable advantages in priceperformance ratio, availability and rapid repair services. Drill Chucks The EXTRA RV-E keyless and PRIMA-L keyed chucks accommodate varied applications. The EXTRA RV-E is clamped with a simple turn of its metal and plastic sleeve and the PRIMA-L gets its clamping strength via DIN 6349 toothing. Both drill chucks have a through-hole for clockwise and counterclockwise rotation. Live Centers The Orange Line live centers feature triple bearings. They come in sizes MT 3, MT 4 and MT 5 and can handle maximum weights of 661, 1,102 and 1,388 pounds respectively. These centers withstand high clamping pressures and allow for high turning speeds without the need for separate lubrication. Lathe Chucks The ZG geared scroll chuck, with its vibration-dampening cast iron body and one-piece jaws is also part of the Orange Line. They are available in six standard sizes in 3-jaw and 4-jaw configurations. Machine Vises The modular RB machine vise rounds out the Orange Line. Available in mechanical (RB-M) or power intensified (RB-K) versions, the vise provides long guidance of its moveable jaw and accurately covers a wide clamping range with quick adjustments. To ensure accuracy, the vise’s longitudinal grooves precisely match the t-slots of a machine tool table, and the vise works with rotation plates to achieve angular settings for increased flexibility.
