WHITEPAPER/

At Autodesk’s Robotics Lab in San Francisco, CA, Universal Robots are used in research projects exploring new ways to automate the construction industry. The projects span human-robot interactions, machine learning, drawing and smart assembly systems. Crazy. That’s the response Heather Kerrick, Senior Research Engineer at Autodesk’s Robotics Lab, often encountered when she explained how her team was going to have collaborative robots and conference attendees build a pavilion out of raw bamboo and fiber string. “There’s always this sort of apocalyptic ‘robots are going to take over and humans will have nothing to do,’” says Kerrick. “We wanted to explore the possibility of humans and robots working together to accomplish things that neither species could accomplish alone.” In doing this she chose a formidable challenge. Raw bamboo is a very uneven, bendable material with different lengths and widths. “When we started, we weren’t really sure to what extent we could work with our robot and help it understand the uncertainty and the variability that we were giving it,” explains Kerrick, adding that this question is

8 | IMD | QUARTER 2, 2018 | IndustrialMachineryDigest.com

central to the construction industry. “In manufacturing, the supply chain can allow for much smaller tolerances, but in construction the tolerances are pretty broad. So we were really proud of our ability to empower the robot by giving it sensors and decision-making abilities and then act on that accordingly.” The Hive Pavilion was built at “winding stations” in the lobby of the Autodesk University conference. At each station, attendees fastened three random pieces of bamboo onto a Universal Robot that generated the necessary movement sequence to hook fiber on the tips of the bamboo to create a unique, tumble weed-looking tensegrity element. “The UR robots were able to offer very precise movements and very precise measurements that would have been difficult for a human to do on-site, so the human didn’t need anywhere near as many

measuring tools or equipment. They were able to go to the robot, get the part that they needed, and then take that back to a construction site,” says the Autodesk research engineer, whose team successfully created the HIVE in three days.

SAFE ROBOT ENABLES “DARING” RESEARCH Building the pavilion involved close collaboration between the conference goers and the Universal Robots’ collaborative robot arms, also called cobots. The UR cobots have force-limiting safety features that cause the robot arm to stop operating if it encounters obstacles in its route. This was a crucial factor in Autodesk choosing this particular robot for the high-profile project. “We’re doing experimental research where the robots are moving based on real-time sensor data, so the chance of the robot doing something unexpected is really high,” explains Kerrick. “We really wanted to engage with people that had no experience with robots, providing them with a safe and fun experience while also furthering our research,” she says, explaining that had her team used a larger, more industrial robot, they wouldn’t have been able to engage with the public in the same way and it would have been a much slower research project. “But with the Universal Robots, we were able to be a little more daring with our research because we could trust that the robot wouldn’t break itself, and wouldn’t pose a danger to others.”

DRAWING THE ENAMORED ROBOT Being able to operate in an open space without safety guarding also landed the UR10 robot a cameo in “Artoo in Love” a viral short film created by Evan Atherton, a research engineer at Autodesk. The film depicts an R2D2 robot in a park in San Francisco falling in love with a mailbox that it mistakes for another robot, and a UR10 that draws a portrait of the loving couple. Moving an industrial robot out into a rugged terrain is not often attempted.

“One of the most interesting things that we learned from the HIVE project was that people with a lot of experience in robotics were very impressed with what we were able to do with all the sensors, while people who had never worked with robotics took it for granted. They assumed this was how this technology worked,” recounts Heather Kerrick, Senior Research Engineer at Autodesk’s Robotics Lab.

A FLEXIBLE ROBOT ASSISTANT FOLLOWING YOU AROUND

“Taking a robot to this unknown place with no power—we had to bring a generator—was an interesting challenge,” explains Atherton. Together with colleagues, he calibrated the robot and wrote a simple program that directed the robot to follow the paths of a vector drawing that was projected onto a canvas. “The UR10 was perfect; it was small, mobile and safe. We could bring it out in a pelican case. Had we used one of our traditional robots, it would have required a forklift and a safety cage so that would never have worked,” he says.

The same premise of a flexible mobile robot in a rugged terrain applies to the construction site. “You don’t see many robots in construction today as it is not super feasible to have industrial robots that need to stay inside cages in this setting,” explains Atherton, emphasizing how working with the UR10 robot can change that norm. The Autodesk research team put a router on the end of the robot arm, gave it a camera and a projector and developed machine learning software that enabled the robot to recognize human gestures and voice commands. The UR10 can be rolled up to a piece of drywall, for instance, and project an outlet onto the wall that the user can modify and then use voice command to tell the UR10 to go ahead and cut it out. “We can put the robot on a cart and simply roll it around the construction site and have it help out,” says Atherton.

FROM HARD-CODED TO MACHINE LEARNING Another construction industry challenge now addressed in Autodesk’s research with the UR robots are smart assembly systems. Yotto Koga, software architect at Autodesk, explains that assembly systems of today tend to be hard-coded and brittle. “They’re engineered so that the parts as they come down the line

Since the bricks are all jumbled together, the UR10 might not grasp the brick in the correct position for placement. If that’s the case, the robot will keep repositioning and re-grasping the brick until it is placed correctly in the gripper.

The final placement is also vision-guided by a second UR robot, a UR5, holding a camera to check the brick assembly. need to be in an exact position and you need customized tooling and fixtures for each specific part in order for the robot to assemble them,” says Koga. “That in itself is very costly in terms of time and money. But what’s more problematic is when things become misaligned— the fixtures become damaged or parts need to be swapped out—the whole line becomes out of sorts.” This scenario prompted Autodesk to look into a “learn as you go” system, something what would be smart, flexible to change, easy to set up – and ultimately a system that Autodesk customers can use to assemble their own designs. Enter the “Brick-bot.” While having a robot pick up blocks of Lego might not at first seem that impressive, the project can explore recognizing and handling more than 10,000 different bricks with very tight tolerances.

SIDE-BY-SIDE ITERATION WITH THE ROBOT Brick-Bot tackles three sub-problems: bin-picking, re-grasping and placement. Using vision guidance, the robot can pick out a pre-defined brick in a jumble of different sizes and colors. If the brick is grasped in the wrong position for placement, the UR10 performs a visual survey and can re-position and re-grasp the brick until it is correctly placed in the gripper. The final placement is also vision-guided by a second UR robot, a UR5, holding a camera to check the brick assembly. “The next iteration is to actually start assembling designs, for example a house out of Legos or a toy giraffe, and then have the robot

12 | IMD | QUARTER 2, 2018 | IndustrialMachineryDigest.com

automatically build it,” explains Koga, emphasizing how the ability to work right next to the robot in this process is imperative. “One of the major reasons we chose Universal Robots is because it’s safe to work around. I could literally connect the robot to my laptop, work next to it, and quickly iterate through our experiments without worrying about safety protocols slowing things down. This was very important for us to make progress in this project.”

COMMAND STREAMING Quick progress was also facilitated by the UR robots’ open APIs. “We were able to get pretty low-level control of the UR robots using the streaming API over TCP communication, which was vital to our particular needs as we needed to directly access the by robot bypassing the robot’s own operating system,” explains the software architect. His colleague Heather Kerrick recounts how the HIVE project benefited from the robot’s open architecture as well.

“Building the HIVE meant working in a bunch of different coding languages and environments across teams and devices. We were able to simplify all of our commands into a single string that we could send to the robot,” she says. With our larger industrial robots, there’s often extra steps or extra software that’s required in order to sidestep whatever native controls are built into the robot, which is not the case here. The scripting language for the UR is also very, very simple to learn and to use.”

HOW SAFE IS YOUR BUSINESS? Why Cybersecurity Equals Job Security for CEOs, CFOs and Others

BY: Gary W. Patterson President & CEO of FiscalDoctor®

How much do you worry about being hacked? How much should you worry? In 2017, cyber-attacks doubled from 2016 levels—and the insider phrase now is “It’s not if, but when, you’ll be attacked.” In fact, organizations are silently and invisibly breached every day, with the private and confidential information of consumers, customers or corporations harvested leisurely by terrorists and criminals. Obviously, this has become an issue that CEOs and other leaders need to take much more seriously than in the past. Amazingly, these breaches do not result from decisions made at the brain-surgeon level. Most cybersecurity (cyber) hacks are enabled by simple errors or laxity in areas like basic software and IT hygiene. This includes the failure to provide minimal security awareness training. Why does this happen? Well … who likes changing passwords, or waiting for that security-code text or phone call, especially when you have ever-growing workloads and tight deadlines? And “the Suits” exempt themselves from the basic common-sense procedures which everyone else must endure. Hacks become inevitable. Enable or compound this with lack of tone at the top and failure to allocate reasonable resources. Did Richard Smith, the Equifax CEO, preside over his own ouster, an immense destruction of shareholder wealth, or both, in the recent

16 | IMD | QUARTER 2, 2018 | IndustrialMachineryDigest.com

hack of 143 million consumers, which allowed access to names, Social Security numbers, birthdates, addresses and, in some cases, driver’s license numbers? The jury is still out. Off-the-record discussions at the recent international CyberHub Summit considered the recent spate of CEOs, CFOs and CTOs actually losing their job due to preventable cyber hacks. And seldom disclosed, events like these are happening daily at smaller middlemarket companies. Why do seemingly simple weaknesses exist to be exploited by nefarious third-world groups? How often does the tone at the top support politically and financially counter-initiatives? Key to the Equifax debacle was the failure to maintain software patches that address known vulnerabilities. The fallout was compounded with a level of hesitation far less acceptable today than in the past, combined with officers selling their stock. But before you start spending any money for an external assessment of your cyber exposure, we suggest that you start with Three-Minute Self-Scoring Review. The more honestly you answer, the more you’ll get out of it.

Minimal Investment. Draw a line between the two points to note which quadrant your business falls into.

STEP ONE. ANSWER THE FOLLOWING TWO QUESTIONS. On a scale of one to ten, how aware is your business and what level is your business investing? AWARENESS: If 10 means you could probably lead a cyber threat panel discussion — and 1 means that you hear your people say the word “cyber,” but you’re not sure what your real level of preparation is — how aware is your business?

INVESTMENT: If 10 means you have already done a cyber or security overview and are implementing those recommendations — and 1 means there actually may be resources available, but nothing is budgeted to consider this until next year or later — at what level is your busines investing?

STEP TWO. MARK YOUR ANSWERS ON THE TWO AXES BELOW: Mark your numerical answer for Awareness on the horizontal continuum from Leader to Novice. Mark your numerical answer for Investment on the vertical continuum from Reasonable Investment to

STEP THREE. CONSIDERING THE IMPLICATION OF YOUR BUSINESS’S QUADRANT ON THE CYBER AWARENESS VERSUS INVESTMENT BELOW. We Pray — a Lot in the upper right corner suggests limited, even minimal, budget is available for cyber-risk management and control, combined with limited, even novice, understanding of cybersecurity and your risks. Get Off the Dime in the bottom right corner suggests a reasonable budget is available for cyber-risk management, but with a limited understanding of cybersecurity and your specific exposures. Riverboat Gamblers in the upper left quadrant are aware of both cybersecurity and possible cyber exposures, but prefer to kick most of the cans down the road, addressing issues slowly and hoping there won’t be an attack. Sleeping Well in the lower left quadrant suggests a strong understanding of overall cyber issues, along with a commitment to managing the organization’s risks with a reasonable budget (and the accompanying political clout and finances needed).

Unless your business is willing to assess its level of cybersecurity, both culturally and from a resource investment standpoint, your C-Suite is leaving itself wide open to be second-guessed and worse.

STEP FIVE.

IF YOU HAVE AN EDGE… WE HAVE A TRIM!

RINSE AND REPEAT. The CEO and key reports burrow deeper, evaluate cyber-exposure areas, create an action plan, invest necessary resources and then execute the plan. This includes coming to grips with the fact that you cannot protect everything — but you can reasonably manage your exposure. Your priority should be to strategically protect the crown jewels of the organization. Business has always faced some level of cyber threats. Threats are countered only to see new threats arise requiring new counter-threats. Where can you be more proactive to get in front of these risks? Before doing anything else, you need to address the tone at the top. Only then will it be possible to manage risks and drive compliance with adequate resources. After all, the reputation and jobs you save may be your people, colleagues or even yourself. Spread the word.

THE NEW FACTORY

There is a lot to be said about a business that cares about where it plants its roots. Since 1998, Combilift has been focused on meeting their clients’ needs with their customized products. Going up against established forklift brands like Toyota and Mitsubishi, Combilift focused on manufacturing forklifts for niche markets. The first market they cornered was long-load handling, such as timber or steel. This was Combilift’s focus for the first ten years. “Combilift is an incredible home-grown Monaghan success story,” said Irish Prime Minister An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar TD. “When the company was founded 20 years ago, it had three employees, a brilliant concept, and the ambition to make it a reality. Combilift is playing a significant role in Monaghan’s success.” The new global headquarters cost €50 million, or just below $59 million dollars to build. The 500,000 square foot manufacturing facility will allow Combilift to double their production. Currently, Combilift employees 550 employees but will be adding an additional 200 skilled

The new factory sits on 100 acres with room to grow. The four 90 meter moving assembly lines produce a new truck every fifteen minutes. The facility focuses not only on producing the best material handling solutions, but also on sustainability. Thirty percent of the roof space features natural skylights allowing the workforce to work under natural lighting through much of the facility. Combilift is also taking advantage of solar technology. Solar panels supply 185 kilowatts of energy to the facility. A biomass plant is fueled by recycled wood heats the spraying booths and assembly area. Furthermore, 110,000 liters of rainwater is harvested for jet washing and bathroom facilities. The factory includes 60 welding bays, two plasma cutting machines, three paint lines utilizing sustainable water-based paints, and three automatic shot blasters to cater different sized products. Combilift has also included a dedicated R&D Development and Testing center.

“We work closely with our customers and dealers to identify solutions that best match their individual specific needs,” says McVicar. “Combilift invests 7% of its annual turnover (revenue) in Research and Development (R & D) to enhance its customization capability. We are intensifying the collaboration with our customers in the warehouse and material handling sectors. The intention is to maximize return on revenue (ROI).”

NEW FRONTIERS Combilift developed the world’s first multidirectional all-wheel drive IC engine powered forklift. Their first year, the company produced 18 units, all but one were exported. In the last five years, Combilift now has 40,000 units in operation in more than 85 countries across the globe. Within the last decade, the product range has been further diversified by the development of more innovative space saving warehouse and heavy load handling products such as their Aisle Master articulated truck and the Straddle Carrier (Combi-SC). “Mass customization is the new frontier for both the customer and the manufacturer. Increasingly customers are expecting products to be tailored to meet their needs,” explains Martin McVicar, managing

director for Combilift. “Forklift producers that offer customized products generally produce low volume, but Combilift is setting the benchmark by offering the mass production of tailored products, resulting in a strategic advantage for our customers. Traditional forklift manufacturers focus on high volume mass production of the same products. We evolve with our clients, producing new products each year.” And now, in 2018 their new facility allows for that ever constant evolution to continue. As materials continue to grow larger, safer material handling methods that ensure the protection of workers is increasing demand. Launched during the grand opening, Combilift has released a new high capacity powered pallet truck that offers safer operation, maximum operator visibility and narrow aisle performance, the Combi – PPT. “It is Combilift’s intention to significantly expand its pedestrian forklift range as can be seen with the launch of this high lift capacity Combilift Powered Pallet Truck (Combi-PPT)” says McVicar.

With a lift capacities of 3,000 kilograms and 6,000 kilograms, and models with even 7,000 to 16,000 kilograms available on requests, the Combi-PPT allows the operator to stand-on or walk behind during operation. Standard features include power steering, AC motor technology, and the rear wheel drive Combi-PPT features Combilift’s patented multi-position tiller arm. Combilift offers optional extra’s such as wider and longer forks, mounted camera, and fork configurations for reels, among others.

THE COMBI-OP ORDER PICKER Combilift’s purpose built order picker, the Combi-OP delivers standing operator over-head guard and multi-function steering/function control that meets the demands of long product material handling. Previously, operators had to manage long product by modifying traditional order pickers. The Combi-OP gives a non-compromised operation for easy picking of long profiles in, for example, steel service centers. Also debuting at the grand opening, the Combi-OP operates in narrow aisles with a capacity of 450 kilograms. Operators can easily and safely hand pick orders for customers from the roomy elevated platform featuring a light anti-slip floor, self-closing platform gate and guard rails guaranteeing the utmost safety. Safety is also ensured during travel as the steering angle automatically adjusts according to lift heights.

FOCUSING ON TIGHT SPACES In 2008, Combilift decided to focus on other markets that were not as reliant on the construction industry that deals primarily with long product. With the development of their Aisle Master line, Combilift set their sights on providing a superior product for the warehouse and storage and distribution industry. Space utilization in a warehouse is always at a premium. The Aisle Master allows for operation in as little as 72 inches. Warehouse and storage facilities dealing with palletized goods typically have two options when they outgrow their current facility. The options are either expand your current facility or move to a new one. Combilift gives you an important third option. By designing aisles to take advantage of the tight operating space that Combilift’s Aisle Master can operate in, one can further utilize the space they already have. With the Aisle master, an operator is able to steer the forks to turn sideways on either right or left, with good visibility, and pick up pallets or whatever the materials might be. The cabin is ergonomic friendly ensuring driver satisfaction and can be had in either electric or LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas) powered units, depending on customer preference. With reduced driver fatigue, the Aisle Master provides faster load-cycle times and unbeatable maneuverability.

OPTIMIZING SHIPPING SOLUTIONS For a company that has had much success with exporting their product, Combilift knows the advantages of making a product easy to ship within a transport container. With the Slip Sheet system, Combilift has engineered a solution to load a transport container faster, safer, and more efficiently.

24 | IMD | QUARTER 2, 2018 | IndustrialMachineryDigest.com

Company founders Robert Moffett and Martin McVicar stand with the first Combilift unit produced in 1998. Today, twenty years later, this unit is still in operation. Designed similar to a conveyor belt, the Combi-CSS (Container Slip Sheet) manages heavy, long loads to be slid securely into a container or loading truck. Once the product is fully inserted, the gate enclosure closes, securing the product in place, and the sheet is pulled out. This innovative design allows for easier shipping of pipe, wind turbines, or other long materials that are typically difficult to transport and would normally require use of a crane.

MEETING CUSTOMERS’ NEEDS Combilift solutions have always taken into account the customer’s needs. Frequently, their designs come from direct input from their clients. At the Grand opening, the first Combilift unit produced in 1998 was on display. Today, twenty years later, this unit is still in operation. While the reliability of a Combilift product is clear, this is not the largest asset the company has after twenty years. Combilift has managed to remain flexible as it has grown into its new global headquarters. “The flexibility in our new facility means that Combilift can continue to accommodate any customer request for a customized material handling solution,” says McVicar “The new factory enables us to double production and remain focused on the needs of our customers and dealers. We have become much more than a forklift manufacturer and are transforming the transport and logistics sector with our innovative, space-spacing products.”

MAKING A CASE FOR

UrethaneParts: 5 KEY FACTORS TO CONSIDER

Urethane’s unique properties and versatility is helping to solve some of the industry’s most challenging component design issues By: Del Williams For engineers, meeting part design challenges can be exceedingly difficult when traditional materials like plastic, steel, and rubber do not possess the required specialized characteristics, lack the versatility to be adapted, cannot be economically produced, or do not readily bond with other materials or system components. As a solution to some of today’s complex design challenges, engineers are turning to high-performance polyurethane elastomers. These tough, elastic materials retain their original shape for a long service life, while offering a number of unique properties and capabilities. Here are five key points that make a strong case for why urethane is providing engineers with the design flexibility they need to produce cost-effective parts that meet ever more demanding design specifications.

1.

URETHANE PROVIDES SPECIALIZED LOAD BEARING PROPERTIES.

Urethane offers superior load bearing characteristics that can help to optimize the part. Its ability to sustain higher stresses, as well as withstand both tension and compression, is one of its outstanding characteristics. While it can change shape under heavy load, it will return to its original shape once the load is removed. “Urethane offers elastomeric characteristics that provide a different type of load bearing, not as rigid as plastic or metal, and capable of managing energy in a more versatile way,” says Fred Boyle, senior process engineer at Argonics, one of the U.S.’s largest producers of wear-resistant and customizable urethane products.

26 | IMD | QUARTER 2, 2018 | IndustrialMachineryDigest.com

In terms of load bearing, urethane covers a class of materials that can absorb and release energy under varying loads or impacts in places where metals are not suitable, adds Boyle. Urethane excels, for instance, in impact loading applications such as for bumpers, shock absorbers, die pads, machinery mounts, vehicle suspension mounting bushings, or anything to do with shock or vibration. “Where rigid mounts in oscillating machinery would be subject to fracture or fatigue failure, urethane can absorb that load and decelerate it without shock loading either the component or the stop,” says Boyle. “It can take the load of impact and spread it over a relatively short duration. In cases of varying load, urethane can either dissipate it or return it to the source of the load for reliable, extended, cyclical loading.”

URETHANE ENABLES MAXIMUM ABRASION RESISTANCE.

The outstanding abrasion resistance of urethane elastomers has led to many important applications where severe wear is a problem. In mining applications, for instance, it withstands abrasive ore, sand, and gravel moving through a conveyor, which can cut and abrade both the steel materials inside, as well as typical rubber skirtings outside that are designed to prevent dust and spillage at transfer points. “Rubber is not as abrasion resistant as urethane, and fancy steel liners do not provide sufficient resistance either,” says Charles Pratt, Operations Manager at Kinder Australia, an independent supplier and manufacturer of conveyor and bulk material handling equipment. Pratt turned to a proprietary urethane formulation by Argonics called Kryptane, an extremely wear-resistant material for applications where abrasion, sliding, or impact occurs regularly. Examples of its use include chute, bin and hopper liners; pipe, fitting and valve liners; impact-and abrasion-resistant plates; blasting curtains and screens; vibration pads; seals and gaskets; as well as truck bed liners, wheel chocks and crossover pads. “In testing for some mining applications, we found that the urethane skirtings on the outside of a conveyor can last 10-15 times longer than rubber,” says Pratt. “Compared to a steel liner on the inside of a conveyor, a urethane liner can get 5-8 times the life.” According to Argonics engineer Boyle, urethane provides a better life and more cost effective solution for abrasion resistance in most applications. “Urethane can be formulated to resist low angle abrasion with high resilience that allows the material to slide, bounce, and tumble along a surface without transferring too much energy into the abrasion-resistant liner,” says Boyle. “For impact abrasion from high angles, it can be formulated to dissipate the impact energy.”

3.

URETHANE OFFERS A VARIETY OF ADAPTABLE PROPERTIES

Because urethane’s properties are tailorable over wide ranges of hardness, resilience, spring rate and dynamic properties, its versatility offers custom solutions to difficult design challenges. “Urethane, even in relatively small quantity production, can be adapted and tailored to prioritize the physical properties that design engineers need,” says Boyle. According to Boyle, for instance, urethane is often used to provide a high degree of resilience, and can return incoming energy to its source, such as for spring applications. This can be done over a long, slow extension or a very quick impact, or the material can be formulated to dissipate the maximum amount of energy when it is more appropriate to cushion an object rather than bounce it. Hardness is also readily adaptable. While most rubbers have a hardness that is typically found between 30 and 80 on the Shore A scale, and structural plastics begin at 55 on the D scale, some urethanes bridge the rubber-plastic hardness range. One proprietary urethane, for instance, offers a wide range of formulations from a 52 shore A to a 70 Shore D to suit a variety of applications. As such, Kinder Australia’s Pratt looked to a proprietary urethane when a unique combination of attributes was required for mining applications to optimize conveyor skirting so it would not prematurely wear the conveyor belt if rubbed against it. “Argonics was able to formulate a conveyor skirting material that was not only abrasion resistant, but also soft and slippery to minimize any potential conveyor belt wear,” says Pratt. “The urethane is very customizable. For applications such as coal mining, you can also make it resistant to fire and temperature as well as anti-static.”

4.

URETHANE PARTS CAN BE PRODUCED WITH A LOW COST, LOW PRESSURE MOLD.

Urethanes can be poured as a liquid mixture into less expensive, low pressure molds so complex mold cavities can be filled without high-pressure molds and presses. This provides a multitude of advantages, not the least of which are lower tooling and production costs than both rubber and plastic molding, and lower material cost than metals and ceramics. Because of short lead times and more economical tooling costs, urethane is often the choice for one-off parts and prototypes, or high volume, repeat production runs. “To produce a good part in the rubber part-making process, you have to apply significant pressure to force the material into all the nooks, crannies and corners,” says Boyle. “This requires rather costly hydraulic presses.” “Urethane, however, is castable at atmospheric pressure so you can use relatively inexpensive molds to create prototypes, design iterations, and even production runs more quickly and inexpensively,” adds Boyle. Urethane is versatile in how it bonds with a wide range of substrates such as steel, aluminum, fiberglass and plastic. “Since urethane is cast as a liquid, it can be bonded to a wide variety of shapes and molded into a wide variety of shapes,” says

5.

URETHANE CAN BOND WITH AN ARRAY OF SUBSTRATES

Boyle. “Urethane can even be bonded to substrates so the bond will be stronger than the urethane. This is an advantage when bonding dissimilar materials, when strength and adhesion are required.” Other conventional materials lack this range of bonding capability. For instance, steel can bond to steel but cannot be reasonably bonded to aluminum; and aluminum can be welded to aluminum, but not attached to plastic in this way. When engineers require unique high-performance properties in the construction of component parts, they can often improve their design by utilizing urethane, and by partnering with an expert provider who can tailor the parts to their exact design requirements.

New Transor Filter Designed For Linear Motors Transor Filter announces a new model for end users that are involved in tool and cutter grinding, cylindrical grinding, super-finishing or lapping operations. Many OEM machine tool builders have now incorporated linear motors in the design of these machines. Linear motors have proven to deliver faster and smoother feed rates which translates into finer surface finishes. Linear motors require cooling and nominal three to five-micron filtration is insufficient and can lead to clogging of the linear drives. To prevent these clogging issues for companies now utilizing linear motors, the new TransorLinear provides continuous oil filtered to One Micron (absolute) to meet this requirement.

EXPANDING OPPORTUNITIES:

IMTS 2018 REGISTRATION NOW OPEN

Strong economic growth bodes well for one of the busiest shows in years; IMTS works with McCormick Place to expand exhibit space.

R

egistration is now open for this year’s leading industrial manufacturing event, IMTS – The International Manufacturing Technology Show 2018. Manufacturing professionals across the globe will gather at Chicago’s McCormick Place, Sept. 10-15, 2018, seeking technologies and innovations that will give their organization a competitive edge. As of January, 1,803 exhibitors have secured a total of 1,307,230 sq. ft. of exhibit space, which is ahead of the previous show numbers (1,455 exhibitors occupying 1.27 million sq. ft.) at this time. “With the U.S. manufacturing sector expanding at its fastest pace since 2004 and capital equipment investment likely to follow, we anticipate that IMTS 2018 will be one of the busiest shows ever,” says Peter R. Eelman, Vice President – Exhibitions & Business Development at AMT – The Association For Manufacturing Technology, which produces IMTS. Eelman notes that the December 2017 Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) registered 59.7 percent, an increase of 1.5 percentage points from the November reading of 58.2 percent, which is well above the PMI of 50 that indicates economic expansion. Further, U.S. cutting tool consumption continued to grow year-to-date in November 2017, showing gains of 8.2 percent compared to the same point in 2016 according to data compiled by the latest Cutting Tool Market Report, a collaboration between AMT and the U.S. Cutting Tool Institute. “In a growing economic environment, more manufacturers attend IMTS,” says Eelman. “To stay competitive, they know that there is no better place to research new technology, find productivity-enhancing solutions, evaluate vendors and connect with industry leaders than at IMTS.”

44 | IMD | QUARTER 2, 2018 | IndustrialMachineryDigest.com

EXPANDING VENUES IMTS 2016 was the third largest in number of registrations (115,612) and in net square feet of exhibit space (1,370,256). This show hosted the highest number of exhibiting companies ever (2,407). Anticipating a stronger show in 2018, IMTS worked with McCormick Place to expand exhibit space, including securing E Hall. Located on Level 2 of the East Building, E Hall has been a successful part of IMTS’s history, providing easy and prominent visitor access and steady, fluid traffic throughout the show. For IMTS 2018, E Hall will house the Machine Components/Cleaning/Environmental Pavilion and Tooling & Workholding Annex. “Historically, the Tooling & Workholding Pavilion was located in E Hall for many years, so IMTS veterans will feel right at home with its ‘new’ location for IMTS 2018,” says Eelman. He notes that the East Building and its Halls open one hour earlier than the South, North and West Buildings. E Hall offers visitors direct access from registration (next to the E Hall entrance), as well as from shuttle bus drop-off areas.
