New White Materials for LEDs (and Fluorescents)
The three new ACA white surfaces are designed to meet a range of lighting application needs while all providing a high level of reflectance, maximizing efficiency and design flexibility. The new materials differ in levels of specularity and diffusion, giving you the freedom to choose the right material for the application without sacrificing reflectance levels and overall luminaire performance. The new materials are: • ACA Super UltraWhite 95 LG – a low gloss at 95- 96 TR producing a broad beam.
• ACA Super UltraWhite 95 TXL – a textured producing an even broader beam. • ACA Super UltraWhite 95 HG – the high gloss provides the best beam control.
The SuperUltraWhite 95 LG is a low gloss, high reflectance, material. It is designed for reflectors where the application requires a level of beam control but the inherent advantages of having a semidiffuse white finish are still necessary. A recessed luminaire is a typical application for this material. The low gloss
feature of the material will add a small amount of beam control, allowing you to aim the light across the target area. The diffuse white base will allow the light to have some scatter, smoothing out the pattern and adding high angle light. The result is a smooth, uniform beam, featuring some beam control to meet the application requirements. The efficiency will be significantly improved over generic white powder coat paint, resulting in higher achieved illuminance levels across the target plane. In sample luminaires featuring an indirect source and a reflector, efficiencies in the high 80s has been achieved. The Super UltraWhite 95 TXL is a high reflectance, textured, diffuse surface. The texture and diffuseness make it ideal for reflector applications where a continued on page 16

The Super UltraWhite 95HG is a high gloss, high reflectance, material offering the most specular reflectance. It is well suited for high bay aisle applications where light will be predominately aimed downwards but you still need some light pushed to the higher vertical angles to uniformly light the stacks. These 95 TR white coatings are easy to work with—they are highly formable, will not yellow, delaminate and the protective strippable masking can be easily removed. Of the three this is the most diffuse, yet maintains a high level of reflectance over increasing incidence angles. An example of a luminaire application for the 95 TXL is an LED mixing chamber, where the goals are to mix the colors from the LED sources creating a white light source and to blend the images of the individual LEDs. Used behind a diffusing lens, the textured material will scatter the light creating a uniform appearance across the output lens. The material would also be applica-

SunPath Tubular Skylights
Ideally, everyone’s workspace would be illuminated by natural light, since studies have shown that workplace daylighting (the use of natural light to illuminate indoor spaces) contributes to better morale, reduced eyestrain, and improved moods for employees. Daylighting offers numerous benefits to employers as well, including enhanced productivity and decreased absenteeism among workers, and reduced energy consumption and lower energy bills for the building itself. However, despite all the benefits of workplace daylighting, many employee workstations have little or no natural light. Oftentimes, this is due to building design, which makes it difficult to allow natural light into workspaces if they are not located near exterior windows. Hillenbrand, Inc. of Batesville, Ind. encountered this issue when remodeling
their office facility. Tracy Baker, facilities and administration manager of Hillenbrand, said, “We had to move some of our executives out of very nice window offices, and create an interior space for them in which it was impossible to install windows.” Baker continued, “With the help of our roofing contractor and Carlisle SynTec Systems, we looked at how we could bring in natural light for these folks who are used to window offices.” Harry Mitchell, the senior project manager for roofing contractor William Kramer and Son, Inc. Approached Bob Whitesell, an independent Carlisle SynTec Systems sales representative based out of Cincinnati, with his quandary. Together, Whitesell and Mitchell came to the conclusion that the best solution was Carlisle SynTec’s SunPath tubular skylights, because they can be used to bring
natural light into almost any dark or unlit space. Daylight enters through a clear top dome on the roof, and shines down through a length of reflective tube to a prismatic diffuser, which disperses the light evenly throughout the indoor space. Whitesell was very confident suggesting the SunPath tubular skylights for this project because, he stated, “The tubular skylights are manufactured for the commercial market, so they’re safe, durable, and they’re backed by Carlisle, a recognized leader in the marketplace. They’re also very easy and quick to install, compared to traditional skylights

After moving into his new office, Chris Lowery, Hillenbrand’s director of public policy and engagement, said “I’ve been in office spaces that have outside windows, some on the corners of buildings. There are no windows in my office now, but there is more than enough natural light coming in through the skylights. It makes a real difference during the work day.” “There are many ways to increase productivity with natural light and it just makes people generally feel better. tougher, higher-performing materials that will make next-generation LED designs more competitive with conventional sources. Such materials will necessarily need to perform reliably under the harsh operating environments in which LEDs are increasingly operating, and deliver broader options for more sophisticated LED designs. As many materials suppliers tout their products as the answer to these challenges, advanced silicone technologies are proving themselves as the most compelling choice. Silicones are particularly well suited to meet the expanding demands of LED applications. These versatile materials have a proven history of reliable performance in demanding electronics applications, and have shown demonstrable value in expanding design flexibility. Designers innovating new lamps, luminaires and modules are capitalizing on these

benefits, enabling them to create higherperforming LED parts with multiple functions, greater integration and highly detailed design features. Dow Corning, a global leader in silicones, silicon-based technology and innovation is committed to supporting the growth of LEDs. Its broad portfolio of proven products offers an expansive toolbox for designers to boost LED performance and make solid-state lighting a more competitive alternative to incandescent and compact fluorescent sources. Widely used already as optical encapsulants to seal and protect sensitive LED electronics circuitries, Dow Corning silicones are now finding greater use in applications such as primary and secondary lens materials where their high refractive index and moldability help to shape light and optimize LED efficiency. The company’s moldable optical silicones, for example, enable LED lamp and luminaire manufacturers to design complex shapes, detailed micro-scale optical structures,
larger parts and even undercuts, which are difficult to achieve with traditional optical materials. Silicone technologies also offer new options for controlling color quality, accelerating productivity and reducing waste and cost. Another key area where silicones are especially beneficial is improving thermal management. In the past, LEDs primarily competed with compact fluorescent lamps and halogens in low-power and low-lumen fixture applications. More recently, however, LED sources are attracting greater interest for higher power and higher density applications like streetlights, office lighting and compact high-intensity discharge systems used to illuminate sports venues. In these and other applications, the operating environment for LED lamps and luminaires is becoming hotter—particularly as designers continue to pack LEDs closer together to meet demand for greater brightness from smaller, more compact designs. This heat can degrade LED performance, reliability and lifetime.
Dow Corning’s LED silicone technologies are ideally-suited for such applications. Optically stable at temperatures reaching 150 C and higher, these products resist yellowing and physical degradation better than organic materials. This helps ensure that LED sources can meet the lumen maintenance requirements of today’s most challenging lighting applications, and maintain excellent optical quality and reliable performance over their expected 50,000-hour lifetimes. The company’s expanding portfolio of high-performance LEDs silicones spans the entire lighting value chain – from LED chip fabrication and packaging to lamp and luminaire design and assembly. They are rapidly becoming the top materials of choice in an ever-broadening range of LED applications worldwide as global industry demand for higher brightness and longer device lifetimes continues to grow. Dow Corning is exhibiting its advanced LED silicone solutions at LIGHTFAIR International 2013 in Booth #159.

from the ground up to take full advantage of LED technology. I know it’s their motto, but the NEXT Team really did ‘Think outside the tube.’
Katona: Richard and his team have been great. They really ‘walk the talk.’ Their lab is a commercial kitchen and we worked with them on energy saving installations in the kitchen and in their office, where they’re realizing up to 78 percent savings.
Young: The transition to LED lighting in the food service industry presents huge opportunities for both energy savings and enhancement of the atmosphere. We are watching food service operators embrace LED lighting much faster than they adopted fluorescent technology. We’ve previously done a lot of education on A-lamps, PAR’s and MR-16’s for front-of-house lighting, but really started looking at the potential for LED retrofit of back-of-house lighting when we learned about the NEXTLamps. Katona: We believe the food service industry is an ideal user because NEXTLamps are shatterproof, provide more
Q: There are many T8 replacements on the market. What are some reasons that NEXTLamps are an attractive option?
Katona: NEXTLamps are designed and built in the U.S. to be a smart LED lighting platform that uses our customers’ existing infrastructure, but is also extensible. NEXTLamps allow for easy integration with controls for occupancy sensing, daylight harvesting, demand-response, and other applications developing around digital lighting solutions. NEXTLamps provide a simple retrofit solution with the same functionality as more expensive integrated LED luminaires. Young: We’ve been very hesitant to promote LED T8 replacement tubes to the food service industry based on poor economics and inappropriate matching of solid-state lighting with fluorescent fixtures. Others have taken a sort of Frankenstein approach. But the NEXT folks got our attention – quite literally – by producing a lamp that was built
Q: What can we expect to see from the NEXT team at the show and this coming year?
Katona: At LIGHTFAIR, we’ll be showcasing our retrofit kits, demonstrating compatibility with controls, and highlighting the unique look and feel of the NEXTLamp. Later this year, we’ll expand our retrofit product line and will further our partnerships with other solution providers, bringing additional value and functionality not offered by other T8 retrofits. We are also innovating under the radar to drive value in lighting beyond energy savings, but I’ll leave that for our next interview. We look forward to seeing your readers at Booth #4259 and encourage them to visit our updated website at www.nextlight ing.com. Thank you for your time and best of luck with the show.

LED INSPIRATIONS (continued from page 1)
place becoming a favorite among lighting designers across the country.
Q: Why Did You Start LED Inspirations?
A: As a showroom owner in 2008 I decided that mastering LED products would be THE strategy that would get us through the recession – to be known as the ‘go to’ store for everything LED and energy efficient. Using this strategy we sold a significant volume of LED products, especially LED tape light. We used it everywhere – in closets, under cabinet, over cabinet, toe kicks, drawers, signs, china closets, coves, edge-lighting glass, back-lighting onyx. And then—it started to get returned. We had issues with connectors, failing adhesive, and dimming, but the biggest problem we had was with color consistency. It simply looked bad.
Enamored with the idea of LED Tape Light because of its versatility but dissatisfied with the LED tape light available, I reinvented the product from the circuit board up. My experiences in the field working with LED tape light taught me the strengths of the product as well as the problems needing to be fixed. Q: What Makes Your Product Different?
A: There are eight significant differences between our LED tape light and our competitors’: our connectors, the polyurethane coating, our adhesive, the color consistency, dim-ability/integration, color offerings, reversible connections, PCB construction. Stop by our
booth at LIGHTFAIR and take the tour!
Q: What Do Your Customers Love About LED Inspirations Most?
A: They love us for three reasons. First, they trust our superior quality, architectural grade LED tape light.
Second, they LOVE our fanatical tech support/design/call-us-with-any-question-and-get-a-live-knowledgable-person/expert team. Many approach lighting from a design perspective and are uncomfortable with the technical nature of LED products. This is especially true with a product like LED tape light where the design includes complexities such as run-length limits, matching the proper size driver to the load, and many dimming issues.
Our technical team gives our customers the support needed to specify our products with confidence. I challenge you to throw anything at our team: a huge design, dimming questions, dmx installations, cell phone photos of an installation, an electrician calling wanting to know what to do with the ‘blue’ wire, system integration questions, sketches on a napkin—we will handle it all! We will answer your questions, provide a layout, BOM, a quote, or whatever else is needed, and all that in a timely fashion. Lastly, our customers love our 99 percent fill rate. We have had the privilege of doing many jobs because we had product in stock and the customer needed it immediately.
