Dear Friends and Colleagues, On behalf of the staff and board of South Arts, welcome to Baltimore for the 2015 Performing Arts Exchange annual conference! Baltimore, which ranks as one of the oldest and most influential cities in the United States, bears a rich cultural and artistic history. From Eubie Blake to John Waters, and the self-taught “outsider artists” featured in the American Visionary Art Museum, Baltimore has fostered pioneers in pushing the boundaries of art. It’s no secret that Baltimore faced tumultuous civil unrest earlier this year. As national media attention focused on devastating actions and disparate groups fanning the flames, this city was shaken and painted in a harsh light. In response, the city’s artists expressed messages of love, beauty, and unity. From Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s impromptu #BSOPeace outdoor concerts to the arts interventions of community artists through the Baltimore’s Peace of Art movement, Baltimore’s artists united visions and brought people together. The arts became a point of healing and safe discussion. As the city continues to heal and address the core issues causing unrest, one thing is clear: the artists in Baltimore and their communities have a deep and profound level of mutual understanding. We welcome you to Baltimore and are grateful to our hosts. Our local partners have a wealth of information to share, and we hope you are enlightened by their stories. PAE provides the forum to exchange ideas, an opportunity to make new contacts and reconnect with old colleagues, and a place where business gets done. We hope you are inspired with fresh ideas and bring new, creative concepts back to your communities. Thank you for coming to PAE 2015 in Baltimore!

Suzette M. Surkamer Executive Director, South Arts

Baltimore, Where the Arts Unify | Fundamentals Room 306

Artists and arts spaces often offer comfort and balance in the wake of a community crisis. This spring, Baltimore artists immediately stepped up to bring residents together in response to protests to the death of Freddie Gray. From the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s #BSOPeace outdoor concerts, to the arts interventions of community artists through the Baltimore’s Peace of Art movement, local artists empowered citizens to unite and to peacefully speak out. We’ll explore not only what worked, but why. Presenters and artists can nurture relationships and perspectives that can connect with and engage with their communities in times of anxiety, when they’re needed most. Faculty: Jeannie Howe, Carol A. Bogash, Charles Cooper. Moderator: Mollie Quinlan-Hayes

PD@PAE FOR ARTISTS & MANAGERS 10:30 – 11:45 a.m.

The professional development sessions below were developed with artists and managers in mind, but are open to all PAE attendees.

The Art of Meaningful Interactions: Crafting Compelling Residencies | Fundamentals Room 302

How do artists, agents and presenters work together to design residency activities? What are some examples of residencies that build community relationships, match an artist’s ideas to a presenter’s capacities, and have long-lasting impact? Join three presenting professionals – a master artist, an experienced presenter, and an important intermediary – for a highly interactive workshop that will give you plenty of good ideas and resources for their implementation. Faculty: Celeste Miller, William Bowling, Denise Ringler

Arts Patrons in the Mobile Age: Trends & Expectations | Skills Room 308

Would you be surprised to learn that 56% of 70-year-old arts patrons have a smartphone? Or that 60% of all Internet traffic comes from mobile devices? What impact has the growing use of mobile technology had on the behavior of arts patrons? In this session, we’ll examine the behavioral trends for arts patrons and mobile devices, discuss how these trends are shaping audience expectations for the performing arts, and explore ways to give your patrons what they want – when they want it. Faculty: David Dombrosky, Eugene Carr

Managing your Career and Business: Strategies for Small Agencies and Self-Represented Artists | Issues & Ideas Room 302

Join Eric Amada (Arts Management Associates), Jennifer Morris (Siegel Artist Management) and Chrissie DiAngelus (Piccadilly Arts) for a session on managing as a smaller shop in our ever-evolving and competitive field. This session is aimed at agents, managers and artists with some experience in the field, running their own business, who are in need of some new sales and marketing strategies, as well as those who are considering starting their own agency or side business. Topics will include discussions of different business models, choosing artists and projects, determining value added services, and cultivating presenter leads. Founded in 1946 and 1957 respectively, these two ensembles combine to present joint concerts on their national tours. They have performed in all 50 states and 30 foreign countries for audiences totaling hundreds of millions. The 65-member Concert Band and 29-member Soldiers’ Chorus perform regularly in some of the most famous concert halls in the world, and just as often in the humblest auditoriums in the smallest of communities. The joining of these two ensembles allows them to offer unparalleled versatility of programming, ranging from orchestral masterworks and operatic arias to Sousa marches, jazz classics, and Broadway musicals. The band and chorus also perform independently, and have recently shared the stage with such ensembles as the Boston Pops, the Cincinnati Pops, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and the National Symphony Orchestra. Visit Booth 401 to learn how the band and chorus can fit in your season!

NEA Heritage Award Fellows

Drink Small, South Carolina

Dolly Jacobs, Florida

Michael Alpert, New York

Daniel Sheehy, Virginia

The National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellowships recognize the recipients’ artistic excellence and support their continuing contributions to our nation’s cultural heritage. The folk and traditional arts are reflective of shared aesthetics, practices and values of families, geographic communities, occupational groups, and ethnic heritage groups. These artists provide us with the opportunity to experience myriad cultural traditions, whether their means of expression has been preserved in its original form, or they have interpreted those traditions in their own way and for their own time. The Performing Arts Exchange is proud to present, from among this year’s National Heritage Fellows, the three performing arts recipients from the PAE service region – blues musician Drink Small of South Carolina, circus aerialist Dolly Jacobs of Florida, and Yiddish musician Michael Alpert of New York – as well as ethnomusicologist Daniel Sheehy of Virginia. They will be introduced by incoming NEA Director of Folk and Traditional Arts Clifford Murphy. We also wish to recognize three Fellows from South Arts’ service region not in attendance today: Mary Lee Bendolph, Lucy Mingo and Loretta Pettway, known collectively as the Quilters of Gee’s Bend, Alabama. South Arts thanks its partners – the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Council on Traditional Arts – for making possible this remarkable gathering and performance for our PAE attendees.

Hear from the National Endowment for Arts’ Accessibility Director, Beth Bienvenu, and South Arts’ Deputy Director, Mollie Quinlan-Hayes, as they help you tackle and better understand two of the most challenging areas for grant applicants – accessibility and readiness planning. We will offer a view of presenting and performing without the benefit of grant funding, focusing on the nuts and bolts of split contracts, and when it makes the most sense to use one. You’ll also learn how to identify non-traditional performing spaces (such as atriums, warehouses, and others) and how to create a set of mutually beneficial terms for presenting performances in these kinds of spaces. The discussion of contracts will include what items are frequently guaranteed, what expense items are paid out to the presenter before determining the income to be split, appropriate split percentages, the types of artists that have been more inclined to enter into such contracts in the past, and the most attractive circumstances for an artist and a manager to enter into a contract based on a split of the income.
