SOUTH BIRMINGHAM COLLEGE IS THE ONLY COLLEGE IN BIRMINGHAM WITH BEACON COLLEGE STATUS - THIS IS AWARDED FOR PURSUING AND ACHIEVING OUTSTANDING QUALITY.

12

Higher Education Courses don’t have to be studied at a University, at South Birmingham College we have a range of HE courses that can help you progress into employment or University.

Many of our higher education courses are run in partnership with Birmingham City University. You will complete your studies at the College but you will be enrolled with the University and have access to all the facilities and services of both the College and the University. The College also offers BTEC Higher National Certificates and Diplomas awarded by Edexcel and by choosing to study a higher education qualification here, you will benefit from being able to study locally, in smaller classes than a university and at a lower cost. The good news is that you will still be able to progress through onto a full honours degree programme usually into the final year. So, if you’re concerned about the costs, having to move away or don’t have the right qualifications, but still want an excellent learning experience taught by well qualified staff, a higher education programme at South Birmingham College is the route for you.

Foundation Degrees Foundation Degree courses are designed and delivered in partnership with employers that provide the knowledge and skills required for the workplace and combine a mixture of academic study and workplace learning.

Higher National Diploma The Higher National Diploma also known as HND is a level 5 vocational qualification which provides both theoretical and practical knowledge in a particular sector. Completion of the HND can lead direct to employment or help you progress onto the final year of a full degree.

Higher National Certificate The Higher National Certificate also known as a HNC is similar to the HND in that it provides both theoretical and practical knowledge in a certain subject, but it may be a better option for part-time study. Once completed, you could even do another year to top up to a full Higher National Diploma.

HIGHER PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATE AND DIPLOMA Higher Level Certificates and Diplomas provide a real choice for individuals who want both the vocational expertise and academic focus that can lead you to the top of your profession.

| FAQS AND HOW TO FIND US

How different is college to school? South Birmingham College offers a more adult environment than school. You get to study the things that really interest you and you will meet people of all ages and backgrounds who are interested in the same things. There are no bells or uniforms and there are events like free concerts, sports and clubs that you can get involved in. Your views and opinions are important here - not only are we interested in what you have to say about your experiences at the College, but we actually listen to your thoughts and ideas and act upon them. We have common rooms for down time, as well as canteens which offer free breakfast!

How will I get to the College? All our campuses are in convenient locations to travel to by bus or train. You might be able to get subsidised or free travel depending on your circumstances. Talk to our Student Services Team and find out if you’re eligible.

What if I don’t have the qualifications or grades that I should have?

148

We have courses for people of all levels, covering a widerange of subjects, so there will always be something for you. You can start at Level 1 and work your way up to Level 4 which is higher education level - or anything in between. If you have just had your GCSE results and they are not what you were hoping for, don’t worry we can help, just come and talk to us and we will help you achieve your best.

How do I choose which subjects to study? When choosing what to do, you should ask yourself a number of questions such as: What am I interested in and what do I enjoy studying? What do I want to do in the future and what do I need to get there? What entry requirements do I need?

If you are still unsure, come along to one of our open evenings where you can find out what courses are available and speak to people who can help such as careers advisors, admissions staff, course tutors and previous students.

What if I want to go to University? You don’t need to do A Levels if you want to go to university. We have many progression routes to take you to university and it is all about finding the right one for you. For example, our coursework based BTEC Programmes in vocational subjects is one route to get to uni. We also have higher education courses that are run in partnership with Birmingham City University, so you will study here at the College but still get higher education qualifications.

I still have a question... If you have a question that’s not answered here, you might find the answer on our website www.sbc.ac.uk Alternatively, you can phone our admissions team on 0121 694 5000 or email: admissions@sbc.ac.uk
