Community Education classes, seminars, workshops, and camps offer a variety of opportunities for cultural, educational, and life-enriching activities for all ages. COMPUTER BASIC COMPUTERS Instructor: Bobbie Smith Tuesday and Thursday, October 15 and 17 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm SouthArk CFWD Computer Lab Fee: $15/student Learn the basics of successfully operating a computer in this hands-on class. Students will study the basic components of the computer, learn how to browse the web, and establish an e-mail account. No prior experience is necessary. Students are invited to bring their personal laptop if they prefer. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. BEGINNING WALTZ Instructor: Wayne Guinn Thursdays, September 5 – 26 from 7:00 – 9:00 pm SouthArk Gym Fee: $50/student The waltz might be the most popular dance of all time. The country waltz is a bit different from the ballroom waltz as it is done straight rather than taking a side step. Although this dance looks very smooth, graceful, and romantic when watched, it provides a vigorous workout for the dancers. No experience is necessary for this course. HUNTER’S EDUCATION Instructor: AGFC Volunteers Tuesdays and Thursdays, October 1 – October 10 from 6:00 – 9:00 pm SouthArk Library Auditorium Fee: Free Anyone born on or after Jan. 1, 1969, must complete a hunter education course and carry a valid hunter education card to hunt in Arkansas. Youths under 16 may hunt without hunter education as long as they are under the direct supervision of an adult who is 21 years old. There is no specific age requirement to enroll in hunter education. However, the educational material is based on a sixth-grade reading level. Arkansas recognizes hunter education cards from other states. PREPARING VALUE-ADDED PERSONALIZED HOLIDAY GIFTS Instructor: Laura Woolhiser  All About Vanilla :: Thursday, September 19 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm in the SouthArk Gym Kitchen The various stages of making vanilla extract will be demonstrated in this class. Three different homemade versions of vanilla extract have been prepared over the summer to allow students in this class to experience the differences it creates in baking.  Dried Herbs feat. PRE-K FRAMEWORK HANDBOOK Tuesdays and Thursdays, August 13-September 12 from 5:00-8:00 pm SouthArk Center for Workforce Development, Room 128 Pre-K FH is a 30-hour course designed to train early childhood professionals in the use of the Arkansas Early Childhood Education (AECE) Framework Handbook. Pre-K FH training helps teachers use this document effectively. Also included is training on curriculum, knowing children, classroom environment, topics of study approach, planning and implementing activities, family and community involvement, assessment and observation, and professional ethics. This basic course provides the foundation for literacy, math, science and social-emotional learning. Honeycutt (2008) determined those Arkansas ABC teachers who attended Pre-K Framework training had higher ECERS-R scores than those who did not attend. CHILD CARE ORIENTATION TRAINING (CCOT) Dates and Times TBD Ten hours of basic orientation training for child care workers is being offered through a program provided by the University of Arkansas in collaboration with secondary vocational centers, postsecondary vocational technical schools, technical institutes, technical colleges, and community colleges. The Division of Child Care and Early Childhood Education of the Arkansas Department of Human Services has recommended that all child caregivers who have had little or no previous child care training complete this basic orientation training within one year of employment in a child care setting. The course is offered at no charge. Cancellation Policy When we cancel: Classes will be cancelled if a minimum number of full-paying students have not registered by the registration deadline. Early registration helps eliminate the disappointment of course cancellations. Full refunds are given for any classes that we cancel. When you cancel: The Office of Corporate and Community Education will refund your registration fee if you cancel up to 5 business days before the class begins. If you cancel less than 5 business days before the class, you will be charged the full amount for the class. Another person may attend in your place when a refund is not allowed. Some seminars, workshops, camps, etc. will have separate cancellation policies. Please inquire about these before registering. Senior Discount Policy: Senior citizens are required to pay full price for all non-credit courses unless otherwise indicated.
