Community Education classes, seminars, workshops, and camps offer a variety of opportunities for cultural, educational, and life-enriching activities for all ages. LEGo Academy ®

All classes utilize Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) concepts and 21st century educational skills of Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, Collaboration, Agility and Adaptability, Curiosity and Imagination.

July 8-18 // Grades 1-8 Junior Engineering I July 8-11 8 am - 11 am SouthArk CFWD East Campus Fee: $139.00

Vehicle Engineering July 8-11 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm SouthArk CFWD East Campus Fee: $139.00

Great hands-on learning and building. Students will creatively build and modify machines through basic engineering skills using the All About Learning LEGO® kits.This class is open to students going into grades 1-3.

Students will build up to 13 different motorized vehicles capped off with a final project using the All About Learning LEGO® kits. Vehicles include everyday vehicles, concept cars, construction machines, and more. This class is for students going into grades 4-8.

Models built: race car, windmill, merry-go-round, levers/pliers, pulley/crane. Concepts covered: basic engineering principles, simple machines, forces in motion, problem solving, and communication skills. Junior Engineering II July 15-18 8 am - 11 am SouthArk CFWD East Campus Fee: $139.00 Students will build projects of a slightly higher complexity using gears and motion from the unique All About Learning LEGO® kits. This course is a must for students who enjoyed Jr. Engineering I (although JE1 is not required). This class is for students going into grades 1-3. Models built: car and trailer, go-round, seesaw, oil well drill, snow plow, catapult, ferris wheel, headstand car, motorcycle, ping pong ball thrower, tower, tricycle. Concepts covered: basic engineering principles, gears and gear ratios, simple machines, forces in motion, problem solving, and communication skills.

Models built: adjustable crane, flipper car, inch worm car, motorcycle, motorized wheel chair, rally race car, space wars vehicle, steam roller, scissors car, submarine. Concepts covered: basic engineering principles, gearing and gear ratios, electric motors and energy, friction, forces, motion, aerodynamics, problem solving, and communication skills. Collision Cars July 15-18 1:30 pm - 4:40 pm SouthArk CFWD East Campus Fee: $139.00 Students will use the All About Learning LEGO® kits to build a variety of battling machines . This is a class of exploration, problem solving, and risk-taking with a goal of learning and experimenting with how machines work. This class is for students going into grades 4-8. Models built: arm bot, blade bot, broom bot, crawl bot, flipper bot, net bot, ramp bot, triceratops bot, winch bot, armored bot. Concepts covered: basic engineering principles, gearing and gear ratios, electric motors and energy, friction, forces, aerodynamics, problem solving, and communication skills.

You don’t need professional equipment or an expensive camera to take amazing photographs. Discover the secrets of how to take great pictures with simple point-and-shoot cameras or even a smart phone. Get ready to shoot! Participants will put their new picture taking skills to the test with an outdoor photo shoot then learn basic photo editing using free online software.

Microsoft Power Point is the most widely used slideshow presentation program. This simple yet powerful communication tool is an asset for anyone who needs to share important information quickly and effectively. Learn skills and techniques to creating professional looking presentations for your next business meeting, school project, or event.

Learn the basics of successfully operating a computer in this hands-on class. Students will study the basic components of the computer, learn how to browse the web, and establish an e-mail account. No prior experience necessary. Class size is limited.

Word for Seniors Instructor: Catherine Harrell June 11 and 13 6 pm - 8 pm SouthArk CFWD East Campus Fee: $15.00 This class will help senior citizens feel comfortable using the word processing program, Microsoft Word. Students need basic computer skills, but experience in Microsoft Word is not necessary. Intro. to Excel Instructor: Catherine Harrell Mondays, June 17 & 24 6 pm – 8 pm SouthArk CFWD East Campus Fee: $30.00 It is easy to shy away from using Microsoft Excel because of how complicated it initially seems. This class is designed to break that preconceived level of difficulty by walking you through steps of basic Excel functions.

You’ll be taken step-by-step through creating a free account as well as an attractive, functional, five-page website. All participants receive a free 20-page workbook with detailed instructions.

Do you want to learn how to make your sewing projects look more professional and finished looking? This class will focus on sewing machine feet to make quick, neat finishes to your sewing projects. Feel free to bring your machine and feet that you do not know how to use.

During this class, students will learn how to cast on, cast off, knit purl, increase and decrease stitches, and keep an even tension. Students need to bring a Worsted weight cotton yarn and size US 7-9 needles.

See how easy and quickly you can install one. Course will cover invisible zippers as well as traditional lapped zippers.

The Arkansas Small Business and Technology Development Center presents “Facebook Timelines for Business Pages.” The new Facebook pages design with TImeline has arrived. Regardless of whether you like it or not, the changes are here - it is best to prepare your page so your timeline will shine. Make sure you are ready to take advantage of all the changes available with the new timelines. They can make your page stand out from the competition IF you know some basic secrets! Join the SAU Small Business and Technology Development Center to learn how to put this powerful marketing tool to work for your small business! Here are just a few things you will learn about the new Facebook pages, including using the preview, timeline cover rules, how updates have changed, admin panel features, messages, featuring posts, “spying on your competitors” and what will hapen to custom content on your page’s tabs.

Cancellation Policy When we cancel Classes will be cancelled if a minimum number of full-paying students have not registered by the registration deadline. Early registration helps eliminate the disappointment of course cancellations. Full refunds are given for any classes that we cancel. When you cancel The Office of Corporate and Community Education will refund your registration fee if you cancel up to one week before the class begins. If you cancel less than one week before the class, you will be charged the full amount for the class. Another person may attend in your place when a refund is not allowed. Some seminars, workshops, camps, etc. will have separate cancellation policies. Please inquire about these before registering. Senior Discount Policy Senior citizens are required to pay full price for all non-credit courses unless otherwise indicated.
