CERTIFIED FIBER OPTICS TRAINING WHO SHOULD ATTEND  Current fiber optics technicians and specialists seeking certification  Current fiber workers who want to expand their technical knowledge  People who plan to enter the fiber optics field FIBER OPTIC ASSOCIATION APPROVED TRAINING The SouthArk Center for Workforce Development, in partnership with BDI DataLynk (FOA Approved School # 208), will begin offering certified fiber optics training in the Spring of 2013. FOA certifications are widely respected for their comprehensive coverage of the knowledge, skills and abilities course members need, a result of the FOA having access to the most experienced and knowledgeable people in fiber optics to help develop FOA programs. Schools cover subjects appropriate to the course description, providing proper course materials and FOA-certified instructors.

Certified Fiber Optics Technician Course (CFOT) Monday-Wednesday, June 10-12 from 8 am - 5 pm (lunch is on your own) Cost: $700 (Fee includes course materials and certification exam) Location: SouthArk Center for Workforce Development, Room 103 This introductory 3-day fiber optic tech course is designed for anyone interested in becoming a Certified Fiber Optic Technician. This Fiber Optic Training combines theory and 85% hands-on activities to prepare the student to take the CFOT (Certified Fiber Optic Technician) test that is sanctioned by the FOA (Fiber Optics Association) and given and graded the final class day. This course also introduces the student to industry standards governing FTTD (Fiber To The Desk), FTTH (Fiber To The Home), K-12 (Schools), and explains Zone Vs. Distribution Cabling. Students will learn how to identify fiber types, recognize various connectors used in fiber installation; and install, terminate, splice, and properly test installed fiber cable to existing standards. This program explores the history and future of fiber optics and fiber optics capabilities, and cost of installation. Anyone interested in becoming a Certified Fiber Optics Technician should attend this class. Upon successful completion, this program is recognized for BICSI CECs (Continuing Education Credits): RCDD 21, Installation 12. Course fee includes all books study materials, and CD. Prerequisites: Basic Computer Knowledge

Certified Fiber Optics Specialist in Testing and Maintenance (CFOS/T) Thursday-Friday, June 13-14 from 8 a.m. - 5 pm (lunch is on your own) Cost: $700 (Fee includes course materials and certification exam) Location: SouthArk Center for Workforce Development, Room 103 Course fee includes study materials, CD, and textbook: FOA Reference Guide to Fiber Optics by Jim Hayes. This 2-day (16-hour) program is designed to offer specialist fiber optics training to anyone involved with the testing and maintenance of fiber optics networks. This advanced fiber optics training is strictly a practical course, but includes more background information than is typical in basic courses to allow the student to understand what they are testing and how to troubleshoot problems in long-haul and short-haul fiber optics networks. One of the most important points of the program is to teach current day technology. Too many courses teach obsolete theory and practice, out of obsolete textbooks! This course will teach differences between applications (telco/CATV/LAN, etc.) so the student can 8|Page (870)864-7193 ce@southark.edu 3698 E.Main

intelligently work in today's fiber optics cable environment. Another focal point in the program is to offer a general, easy to understand approach to fiber optics testing standards. We attempt to explain the variety of testing standards, equipment and technological approaches used in fiber network testing and how to choose among them. Many courses are criticized because they are too specific or prejudiced to one application, technology or manufacturer. We explore the overall spectrum of testing and maintenance of fiber optics networks and strive to provide a better comfort level for our students with regards to testing and maintenance of both single mode and multi mode fiber optics networks. Subject matter includes a detailed study of ANSI/TIA/EIA-526-14A, OTDR Fundamentals and Uses, OTDR Vs. Insertion Loss Testing, Return Loss Testing, and Proper Maintenance of High-Performance Fiber Networks. The Certified Fiber Optics Specialist/Testing Exam is given and graded the final day of class. Course fee includes all study materials, consumables, manuals, and PC-Based OTDR Simulator. Program provides for 75% hands-on activities. Prerequisites: FOA CFOT Course or any other Formal Fiber Optics Training Course within previous 6 months, or 1 Year Fiber Optics Related Experience.

Certified Fiber Optics Specialist in Splicing (CFOS/S) Saturday-Sunday, June 15-16 from 8 am - 5 pm (lunch is on your own) Cost: $700 (Fee includes course materials and certification exam) Location: SouthArk Center for Workforce Development, Room 103 Course fee includes study materials, CD, and textbook: FOA Reference Guide to Fiber Optics by Jim Hayes. Want to be certified as proficient in installing and making mechanical and fusion splices according to industry standards? Open to anyone, this 2-day, 85% hands-on program will teach you the importance of high performance splicing and the points necessary to achieve these splices. Classroom activities include training in both fusion and mechanical splicing of both single and multimode fiber optic cables. In addition to basic splicing activities, you will be required to correctly and efficiently install spliced fibers into splice trays and trays in various enclosures and to demonstrate proficiency in interpretation of splice loss using OTDR splice traces. If you pass the FOA (Fiber Optics Association) exam given and graded on the final day of class, you become registered with the FOA as a Certified Fiber Optic Specialist in Splicing (CFOS/S). To take this exam, you must already have taken the CFOT exam or else take it during class (for an extra fee). This course is accredited by BICSI for 14 RCDD & 14 Installer Level 2/Technician CECs. Suggested Prerequisites: CFOT Course or any other formal Fiber Optics training course within previous 6 months, or one year of Fiber Optics-related experience, especially experience with fiber preparation, termination, and testing and a thorough knowledge of fiber optic safety practices.
