SOUTH BAY HISTORY TIDBITS LOUIS “LOUIE” ZAMPERINI BY MAUREEN MEGOWAN / THE RE/MAX COLLECTION
Louie Zamperini is one of the greatest South Bay heroes who has ever lived. Louis Zamperini was born January 26, 1917 in Olean, New York, to Italian immigrants Anthony Zamperini and Louise Dossi. In 1919, the family moved to Torrance. Louis had a troubled childhood, and it is said that he developed his extraordinary running talents from out running the local police. Louie attended Torrance High. To counter Louie’s tendency to get into trouble, his older brother Pete encouraged him to join the track team. Louie excelled in the long distance events and In 1934 set a world interscholastic record for the mile, clocking in at 04:21.2. This earned him a scholarship to the University of Southern California. Louie’s specialty was the mile run, but for the 1936 Olympics, he trained for the 5,000 meters believing he had a better chance at that distance, and qualified for the team. Although he finished eighth in the 5,000 meters at the Olympics, his finishing lap of 56 seconds drew the attention of Hitler who specifically asked to meet the young Louie. He later managed to steal a Nazi flag as a souvenir. Zamperini finished off his running career by setting a national collegiate mile record of 4:08 in 1938 which held for fifteen years, earning him the nickname “Torrance Tornado.” At the time, many believed that Louie would be the first to break the four minute mile barrier. Louie joined the Army Air Corps in September 1941 as a second lieutenant flying a B-24 bomber in the Pacific. He and two other crew men survived being shot down during a rescue mission searching for another downed bomber, and spent 47 days adrift in the Pacific Ocean. After reaching the Marshall Islands, he was immediately captured by the Japanese. Zamperini was held in the Japanese Prisoner-of-war camp at Ofuna for captives who were not registered as prisoners of war (POW). Louie was held prisoner with [Gregory] “Pappy” Boyington of the famed “Black Sheep Squadron” and the two became friends. One of the guards there, James Sasaki, had known Louie at USC. Louie was especially tormented by another sadistic prison guard Mutsuhiro Watanabe (nicknamed “The Bird”). After the war, Louie found the means to forgive his tormentor after attending a Billy Graham Crusade, and began a career as an inspirational Christian speaker. Zamperini had been reported lost at sea and his family believed him to be dead. The City of Torrance in 1944 renamed the Torrance Airport as “Zamperini Memorial Field.” After the war ended and Louie was released from prison camp, on December 7, 1946, the city named the airstrip at Torrance Municipal Airport Zamperini Field but, unfortunately, this name change was never officially recognized. Finally, on January 29, 1974, the Torrance City Council made the name change official. In 1987, the football field at Torrance High was renamed Zamperini Field. Zamperini’s life will be documented in a new movie based on the best selling book “Unbroken” currently being filmed and directed by Angelina Jolie. www.southbayhistory.com for more history

– Maya Angelou The National Association of Realtors latest quarterly report showed the median existing single-family home price increased in 73 percent of the measured markets, with 119 out of 164 metropolitan areas showing gains in the fourth quarter of last year. In the West, existing-home sales dropped 12.7% in the fourth quarter, and are 8.1 percent below a year with notable inventory restrictions. When looking at aggregate sales data thus far in 2014 in the South Bay (Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Palos Verdes Estates, Rancho Palos Verdes, Rolling Hills & Rolling Hills Estates — Single Family Residence) there have been a total of 99 closed home sales versus 110 in 2013 and $9,474,922 less in total sales volume. It’s too soon to tell what is really going on so we’ll keep an eye on inventory, pricing and days on market as we head into spring. “Being on a corner lot gives you a sense of openness, so you don’t feel boxed in,” Spadone observes. Wendy grows vegetables in two box gardens, rotating the plants seasonally. Rounding out the first floor is a living room centered by a sleek fire ribbon fireplace. A downstairs bedroom and bath afford guests privacy and independence. East-facing windows above the stairwell allow sunlight in and provide a view of mature bamboo trees outside. Spadone designed the unique staircase railings. “You see so many railings with a balustrade, and I wanted to do something different,” he explains. “Contemporary, but not too contemporary.” The solution was horizontal stainless steel rods and dark wood handrails. In contrast to the first floor’s open living space, the upstairs area feels more intimate despite the generous square footage. Here, four bedrooms offer flexibility in terms of accommodating the family’s needs. One bedroom functions as a guest room and office for Spadone, and includes an en-suite bath. A room in a Jack-and-Jill configuration now serves as Wendy’s office, while the other is the bedroom of the couple’s two-year-old son. Both Wendy’s and Spadone’s offices face southwest, taking advantage of sunset views. Tall ceilings and eight-foot doorways make it possible to “sell the house to a basketball player someday,” quips Spadone. Besides their height, the doors’ distinctive, false-louvered styling lends a tropical flair. This type of door was difficult to find when the home was first built two years ago, according to Spadone, but it was a worthwhile quest. “They make me feel like I’m on vacation at a resort hotel,” he says. Most of the windows on the top floor are awning-style. “You can open them up to get a breeze,” notes Spadone, and Bermuda shutters provide privacy for some rooms. At the end of a hallway illuminated by a skylight is the master suite. High ceilings provide a sense of openness in the bedroom, where views of the street and mature trees give the feeling of being in a posh tree house. The master bath features his-and-hers custom vanities made of dark wood. Oversized white porcelain tiles cover the walls and unify the well-proportioned space and fixtures. The roomy shower stall boasts a natural pebble floor, another detail inspired by the family’s Hawaiian vacations. The smooth, polished pebbles add a natural element that keeps the look contemporary without feeling austere. Not every contemporary home succeeds in giving off a warm energy despite the design’s inherent angularity and simplicity. But the Spadones’ home seems to have garnered the approval of the neighbors from the very start. “When we finished the house, people would stop on the street and go, ‘Hey, I love your house,’” marvels Spadone. “People I don’t even know show appreciation for the overall appearance of the home. You put so much effort into [designing and building a home], so it’s kind of special.”

It gets hot in the Mediterranean, and we’re not just talking about the club scene. The earliest inhabitants of modern-day Italy, Greece, Spain, North Africa and the south of France built structures to protect themselves from the heat. Thick walls and small windows insulated homes from the relentless sun, and wrought-iron grilles on windows and doors allowed inhabitants to secure their homes while allowing ocean breezes to cool the inside. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the south of France and the Italian Riviera became popular vacation destinations, and villas and second homes commissioned by the wealthy began to incorporate elements of classic Greek and Roman architecture. The Mediterranean Revival style thrived in the United States in the early 1900s to 1930s, particularly in Florida and California. Mediterranean Revival villas were constructed in communities such as Boca Raton, Palm Beach and Coral Gables in Florida; and San Marino, Pasadena and the Palos Verdes Peninsula on the west coast.

Some view Mediterranean Revival style as a mash-up of Spanish Colonial, Venetian Gothic and Italian Renaissance architecture. It borrows heavily from these traditions, as well as Beaux-Arts. The typical home has a rectangular footprint and is one or two stories. The walls of period homes are thick and covered in smooth stucco, and the windows are generally arched. Roofs can be pitched or flat and covered with red terra cotta tiles. The distinguishing characteristic is a symmetrical façade, and commercial or apartment buildings may have elaborate towers and cupolas. Colonnades reminiscent of the arched walkways around St. Mark’s Square in Venice can be seen in some Mediterranean Revival-era buildings, including the colonnades that surround Malaga Cove Plaza in Palos Verdes. Traditional Mediterranean Revival homes are painted white or pale colors, harkening back to early Mediterranean homes for which white paint and whitewashed floors served to deflect heat. Some estates are surrounded by lush, manicured gardens; a gloriously over-the-top example is Villa Vizcaya in Miami, Florida, the 1914 estate of businessman James Deering.

According to Carl Leon, who has 34 years of experience in the flooring business and owns Paseo Flooring in El Segundo, older hardwood floors tend to be poly-based and should not be cleaned with water. Newer flooring is almost always water-based, and is water compatible. Because wood expands when wet, however, do not use excess water when cleaning. Instead, use a damp towel or mop.
USE THE RIGHT CLEANING PRODUCTS AND TOOLS While some hardwood floor owners use cleaning solutions and chemicals to clean their floors, Leon explains that owners should “vacuum their floors with a soft brush and clean with a damp cotton towel.” Cleaning solutions such as oil soaps can ruin a hardwood floor refinish, so be careful. Never use ammonia-based cleaners, which will fade your floors over time.
KNOW THE RULES OF MOVING Moving furniture, or moving into a new house altogether, can pose problems that result in hardwood floor damage. Homeowners who are refinishing and installing hardwood floors before the move should be extra careful. Leon explains, “I always tell my customers to paint after [their floors are installed] so dust doesn’t get on the paint, and not to put tape on the floors.” Put felt coverings on furniture feet. Even though wood is a durable material, heavy items increase the chance of nicks, which can ruin your natural finish.
CONSIDER EXTRA COATING Leon notes that two coats of finish last anywhere from five to 10 years, while three coats last for 15 years. Though an extra coat is more expensive initially, it will protect your investment longer. Because hardwood floors can only be refinished a few times, making the most out of your first refinishing job is essential.
