Hastings Contemporary School Robot Tours
At Hastings Contemporary they work with local schools, supporting pupils to engage with exhibitions critically and creatively, helping them to develop their creative thinking and practical skills. During the first national lockdown in 2020 they began using a telepresence robot to run robot tours, offering a chance to visit the gallery remotely. Excitingly, the gallery has now secured funds to offer free robot tours to schools. The tours provide the opportunity to visit the gallery from the comfort of the classroom, cutting out logistical hurdles and Covid concerns. If you have difficulties physically getting to the gallery, or simply wish to introduce your students to the innovative experience of robot led virtual reality, the robot tour can provide the perfect solution. In addition, as part of the experience, students will have the option to take part in an interactive, artist-led workshop, streamed live to the classroom. To take part, you will need a computer with a Wi-Fi connection and a white board with a projector and speakers for students to watch the tour. If you would like your school to benefit from this exciting opportunity, or for more information, please contact visits@hastingscontemporary.org.

At the Parenting with Anxiety Project at the University of Sussex, they are focused on finding ways to help parents and children navigate the world with confidence. They know it is not always easy, but they believe it is possible. If you feel anxious you may find yourself feeling worried about your children. You may be concerned that they are feeling anxious too. Their research shows that with the right support parents can help their children become more confident. They now want to find out if families will benefit from an 8-module online course. If you would describe yourself as high in anxiety and have a child aged 2-11, they would love you to join them. Half of the parents will do the course and the others will just answer questions. Everyone who takes part is playing an important role in helping children with anxiety. Visit www.parentingwithanxiety.org.uk for more information.
Three African Kings Online School Resources
A Brighton community group has launched new educational resources for primary and secondary schools, thanks to support from Sussex University, focusing on the story of the Three Kings of Botswana and their visit to Brighton and Sussex in 1895. Educators, schools and teachers from across the UK are invited to use the free downloadable schools resources on the Brighton & Hove Black History website, which include resources for teaching Key Stages 1, 2 and 3 and two short films aimed at secondary school children. The aim of the project is to combat racism in schools by providing much needed, high quality resources for teaching Black History and histories of the Empire, with a thrilling local angle for schools in Brighton and Hove and Sussex. These resources will help schools teach citizenship, history and other parts of the curriculum, as well giving local students a rooted connection to Brighton’s history of multicultural diversity. A largely untold story from Brighton’s diverse past, the Three Kings of Bechuanaland (now called Botswana) came to the UK to urge the British Government to stop Cape Colony Prime Minister Cecil Rhodes and his company, The British South Africa Company, from taking ownership of their country. Rhodes was a well-known racist and brutal employer. He wanted to build a railway across Bechuanaland linking the Cape to Cairo and to give all the land 20 miles either side of the railway line to white farmers. The kings commissioned a local Brighton man, Charles Willoughby, to organise a tour of Britain for them. They visited Brighton and Sussex as part of their visit to the UK, including visits to Elm Grove Primary School, Brighton Dome, Brighton Museum and Union Church on Ship Street. This winter trail invites visitors on a journey around the National Trust garden following the story of Nellie Soames, former owner of Sheffield Park, and one of the first women to venture into the Arctic. Her book, Polar Gleams, recounts the tale of this astonishing journey.

An Exciting Year at Bluebell Railway
Bluebell Railway is getting ready for another exciting year of events, including ice skating in the locomotive shed this February Half Term. Don’t worry! Display engines, like Stepney, will still be tucked up nice and warm inside the shed and be available for visitors to step aboard and explore. Road meets Rail takes place between 28 and 30 May. Set at Horsted Keynes Station in the heart of the countryside, step back in time and enjoy vintage fairground rides and see huge steam tractors, ploughing engines and road rollers busy at work. Look out for Miniature Monday! In the summer between 29 and 31 July, Stepney’s friend Fenchurch, who will be 150 years old this year, will star in a special birthday gala. His friends will come from other railways to chuff up and down the line and show the big engines that terrier engines are small, but mighty! The locomotive engineers are busy restoring Fenchurch’s boiler so he can make steam and are tidying up his motion so he can turn his wheels smoothly. He will then have a new coat of paint to match his pal Stepney – very smart! Visit Bluebell Railway by car or train. At Sheffield Park Station near Haywards Heath there’s lots of free parking, disabled parking and electric car charging points. Alternatively, you could travel by a modern main line train to East Grinstead Station and walk 2 minutes to the Bluebell Railway Station to continue your journey by steam!

Develop Children’s Unique Talents at Bede’s
At Bede’s School, they believe that lessons learned outside of the classroom are just as vital as those learned within it. Bede’s provide pupils with many hands-on opportunities which enable them to actively engage in their own learning. Recently,Year 4 and 5 pupils dedicated time to the Marine Conservation Society Beach Clean. With litter pickers and data collection clipboards in hand, they hunted for litter and plastic across the local seafront in Eastbourne. The pupils gathered a wide range of litter, and uploaded their findings to the Marine Conservation portal. In turn, this encouraged important, thought-provoking conversations about the environment and about how we can all contribute to save our planet. At Bede’s, they firmly believe in initiatives that involve pupils in the local community, as well as make a difference to worthwhile causes. This is part of the Bede’s mission to cultivate a vibrant learning experience for their pupils, to motivate them to pursue their individual best. Bede’s encourage pupils to discover their passions and give them the opportunity to develop their unique talents, seek new horizons and achieve their potential. This is the underlying spirit of Bede’s, seeing pupils through their journey from Nursery to Sixth Form, from 3 months to 18 years. Bede’s Nursery, Pre-Prep, Prep and Senior Schools are situated across two stunning sites. With small class sizes, an extensive co-curricular programme and endless opportunity to shine - Bede’s is the place for your child to discover their passions.Visit Bede’s at one their open mornings on 5 and 19 March. Eco Fashion at Battle Abbey School
Education News
Education News
Ingenuity and creativity were top of the agenda at Battle Abbey School last month as they hosted their popular annual Eco Fashion Textiles show. This year, after much delay due to the pandemic, the hotly anticipated competition finally went ahead with 14 finalists exhibiting in the Battle Abbey School Library in December. The show, with a theme of ‘Trash Couture’, saw Year 5 - 13 pupils invited to submit their creations. The focus was on reinvented garments with a particular interest in innovative use of materials and the transformation from throwaway to viable product. Over 30 applicants were whittled down to the lucky finalists who were from a variety of local schools including;Vinehall, Bexhill College, Hawkhurst Primary, Uckfield College, Claremont, Derwent Lodge, All Saints Primary, The St Leonards Academy and Battle Abbey School’s own Textiles department. It was wonderful to see so many students from different settlings coming together to display such creative pieces. After much deliberation, the judges crowned the eventual category winners with Anna M (Cement Bag Dress) and Liz D (Recycled Masks Dress) both taking home the top category winners prizes of £150. A number of others received ‘commended’ prizes and special awards contributed by judges and sponsors, The Crafty Norman, Coastal Currents and Kate’s Customs. Battle Abbey School has a nationally recognised Art department regularly placing pupils at Central St Martins, Camberwell and Kingston to name a few. Just under 50% of their Sixth Form leavers go on to Oxford, Cambridge or Russell Group universities.
