NAOPT Launches Website and Resources for Schools. The National Association of Therapeutic Parents (NAOPT) has launched a website packed with resources for all types of schools. By supporting schools and their teaching staff, the NAOPT hopes to raise awareness of development trauma. Children are among those most at risk when involved in a traumatic event. More common than most realise, 25% of victims of child trauma can develop mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety and PTSD. Distinguishing how to best help these children is the hardest element among teachers and parents. Especially keeping communication open between the two groups, which often causes different perspectives on a child’s behaviour from a home setting compared to a school setting. Designed to guide schools into an effective support system, members can access various resources on children’s mental health.These are useful for teachers to understand students’ behaviour, for schools who believe they’re missing a vital piece in understanding a child’s mind or even those who wonder why pupils don’t perform as they could.

Whatever the Weather Fun Days Out with the Family Nature Week at Hever Castle

Enjoy the great outdoors and find out more about wildlife between 12-20 February as part of Nature Week at Hever Castle. This event at the historic castle is perfect for school aged children and families. Pull on wellies, collect a bag at the main entrance, along with a list of items to find, and head around the Lake for a free nature themed scavenger hunt. Warm up in the Think Tank classroom with a free Cone Critters workshop. Children can paint and decorate their very own pine cone and turn them into critters. Then head into the Castle and see if you can spot different types of wildlife hiding in the rooms. Hever Castle is the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, and visitors will soon be able to find out more about Anne’s youth and what made her into the woman who so caught Henry VIII’s eye on her return to England. The first of a series of exhibitions detailing the life and times of Anne Boleyn launches on 4 March, 500 years to the day of her first recorded appearance at English court in 1522.Visitors will be told the story of Anne’s childhood, her education at home alongside her sister, Mary, her year at the court of Margaret of Austria, her time spent at the French court and debut at the English court through portraits and letters on display throughout the Castle. Sidcup Partners organised a range of very successful trails through Sidcup including at Christmas with a Gingerbread trail, Halloween with a fancy dress competition and the Easter trail with the traditional chocolate prize. Sidcup Partners also held a combined wellbeing and art festival in Lamorbey Park (the Glade) and a much enjoyed Dino Day in the high street, with a range of free craft activities and the opportunity to meet a Dinosaur. Sidcup Partners have installed poppies on the lamp columns and supported Armed Forces Day, working closely with the United Services Club. Our photo shows a mosaic completed by local children at Sidcup Library to commemorate Armistice Day. Christmas Lights were installed on the lamp columns and in addition this year two large Christmas trees were erected on the new Library development and by Sidcup Station in partnership with the London Borough of Bexley and Neilcott. Plans for 2022 include a range of murals to be painted on walls around the town. Let’s all hope for a happy and healthy 2022.

An Exciting Year at Bluebell Railway

Bluebell Railway is getting ready for another exciting year of events, including ice skating in the locomotive shed this February Half Term. Don’t worry! Display engines, like Stepney, will still be tucked up nice and warm inside the shed and be available for visitors to step aboard and explore. Road meets Rail takes place between 28 and 30 May. Set at Horsted Keynes Station in the heart of the countryside, step back in time and enjoy vintage fairground rides and see huge steam tractors, ploughing engines and road rollers busy at work. Look out for Miniature Monday! In the summer between 29 and 31 July, Stepney’s friend Fenchurch, who will be 150 years old this year, will star in a special birthday gala. His friends will come from other railways to chuff up and down the line and show the big engines that terrier engines are small, but mighty! The locomotive engineers are busy restoring Fenchurch’s boiler so he can make steam and are tidying up his motion so he can turn his wheels smoothly. He will then have a new coat of paint to match his pal Stepney – very smart! Visit Bluebell Railway by car or train. At Sheffield Park Station near Haywards Heath there’s lots of free parking, disabled parking and electric car charging points. Alternatively, you could travel by a modern main line train to East Grinstead Station and walk 2 minutes to the Bluebell Railway Station to continue your journey by steam! Kidbrooke Learning Centre (KLC) has helped a significant number of children aged 7 years old to 16 years old (Year 3 to GCSE) achieve their full potential. Babington House School Blackheath High Student Races to Triathlon Success

Young triathlete and Blackheath High School student Marley Reeves raced to success with a 9th place finish in the Inter-Regional Champs for British Triathlon. Marley achieved an impressive 4th place in her heat which saw her secure a place in the main final. The young athlete then dug deep in a competitive women’s final finishing in the top 10. The budding tri star is now ranked 9th in the Tristar 2 ages 11 and 12 group in the UK for British Triathlon, and says she enjoys the sport because of the variety on offer with the different disciplines; swimming, cycling and running. In this year’s summer Olympics in Tokyo, the British athletes took silver in both men’s and women’s elite races, and gold in the mixed relay. Marley was inspired by seeing both the male and female successes in Tokyo, and especially watching Alex Yee - from Lewisham - who was coached by two of her current coaches. Carol Chandler-Thompson, Head Teacher at Blackheath High School, told Primary Times, “The whole school community is so proud of Marley.
