Unlike past directories which brought updated information for courses in Oklahoma, Arkansas and southern Kansas, this issue focuses on Oklahoma courses while adding a host of travel information for our readers. The Arkansas and Kansas listings are still available on our website, www.golfoklahoma.org. In this new format, we visit destinations both familiar (New Mexico, Hot Springs, Missouri, Alabama) and perhaps unfamiliar (Nova Scotia, Dominican Republic), but only ones that offer tremendous values to the traveling golfer. One of the most well-traveled golfers we know, Tom Bedell of the A Position, offers his tips on how to plan and organize a golf trip and what to avoid. And Beau Adams shows us why the recreational vehicle is the new standard for style and comfort in golf travel. Then there is former Dallas Morning News reporter Robert Krug, who will tell you why playing 100 courses in Oklahoma is better than 300 in Texas. content and delivery of timely information in all media forms. Golf in Oklahoma faces challenges just as the game does across the country. Many public and private courses are having to reexamine business models that were constructed for a level of play or membership that just is not feasible today. Yet it’s encouraging to see how many courses are finally beginning to work harder on their junior programs and how competitive the junior golf programs in the state have become. Both the OGA and PGA junior tours are thriving both in terms of numbers and talent, resulting in a raft of college scholarships being awarded. More importantly, a future generation of golfers who understand and enjoy the game is being created. We need more of that. The OGA Foundation announced financial donations to 14 courses, clubs or other organizations to help with their junior programs and to help grow the game. This is a huge step in the right direction. Ouachita Mountain Haven Variety is Hot Springs Village signature by steve habel Imagine a community and destination where golfers can enjoy nine challenging courses and a lifestyle of amenities and activities, all within a half-hour’s drive one of the nation’s most famous national parks and tourist attractions. Hot Springs Village, one of the nation’s most diverse golf communities, makes that dream a reality. Set on more than 26,000 acres of rolling, wooded terrain in the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains of central Arkansas, Hot Springs Village is a standalone municipality and the largest gated community in the United States, with a population of about 13,000. Located 18 miles northwest of Benton, 17 miles north of Hot Springs and 53 miles southwest of Little Rock, Hot Springs Village is a serene resort community for residents of all ages. The community’s nine courses, all designed by the Maryland/Virginia-based firm of Ault, Clark & Associates and opened incrementally over a 32-year stretch, have always been its draw. Four of the courses at Hot Springs Village are among the topranked tracks in the Natural State. But until recently the privilege of teeing it up at Hot Springs Village was reserved solely for residents and their guests. This 10 •••••• www.golfoklahoma.org

year, four of the community’s courses – Balboa, Magellan, Ponce de Leon and DeSoto – will allow daily play, extending golfers the chance to experience the Village and to see what they’ve been missing. The neighborhood will also, for the first time, offer a limited number of non-property owner one-year memberships for $535 per couple. Memberships include use of amenities at property owner rates on eight of the golf courses, 13 tennis courts, a fully equipped fitness facility, outdoor and indoor pools, 11 recreation lakes and more. Tom Clark, golf course architect and principal of Ault, Clark & Associates, has been involved with Hot Springs Village and its courses since the early 1970s. Over the decades that the nine courses have been rolled out, the golf experience at HSV has remained consistent as the routings have aged, a testament to the due-diligence of Clark and his team and the palate with which Clark has been able to work. The course’s unwavering excellence is also due to the team of crack course superintendents and their staff. The courses each have their own flair; some are more central to the community’s lakes and ponds while others wind through forests and over hills, but all give a great

cross section of the property’s demanding topography. “When these courses were designed, we knew that the majority of the play would come from the forward tees,” Clark said. “Our routings, and our bunkers and the forced carries, make shots from those tees challenging while taking into consideration who will be playing.” Clark also made sure that each course stood alone, be it via putting surface designs and green surrounds, to differing bunker styles, to the rhythm of play on the courses. Though each course has bentgrass greens, the type of bentgrass varies depending on when the course was built. “The attraction of our courses is their diversity,” said John H. Paul, Hot Springs Village’s director of golf. “Not only are there no two courses alike, there are not two holes in the Village that resemble each other. The courses were built five or six years apart and Clark put the knowledge he gained from the previous course to use on the ensuing one – that helps add to the diversity.” Hot Springs Village’s nine golf courses run the gamut from the 3,895-yard, par-62 Coronado course (which is the most played course at the Village) to the scintillating Diamante, which was rated the No. 1 golf

The demand for quality golf keeps all the courses active, as each track averages more than 57,000 rounds per year.

The 1970s and 80s

DeSoto was the first course built at the Village, opening in 1972. From the back tees, the par-72 course plays at a hearty 6,733 yards from its back set of five tees (forward tees are at 4,653 yards). The track was renovated in 2001 to add new forward tees and a new irrigation system and now has an updated, player-friendly look enjoyable for all skill levels. Clark made dramatic changes to hole Nos. 3, 4, 7, 11 and 17 in the renovation. DeSoto has three great finishing holes to top off a good round as it comes in with the 535-yard par-5 16th, the 365-yard par-4 17th and the 545-yard par-5 closing hole. The fairways, tees and roughs are 419 Bermuda and the greens are Penn Cross bentgrass. DeSoto features full facilities including restaurant, lounge, grill, pro shop, putting green and driving range. Opened in 1977 as the second of the community’s courses, Cortez is located in the northern section of the village. The par-72 course plays to 6,672 yards and has just two par-4s (both on the back-nine) that play at more than 400 yards. But this beauty is not to be taken for granted, as its routing winds tightly through the trees and brings water into play on nine of its holes. Many of its holes also bring elevation changes into play and the greens complexes on Cortez are exciting and demanding. Perhaps the best stretch at Cortez is holes

8-11, where you get a little bit of everything and a lot more difficulty than many golfers can handle. The 173-yard par-3 eighth is an all-carry drive over a huge lake to a shallow, well-protected putting surface. The ninth – a 393-yard par-4 – heads straight uphill off the tee and on the approach, adding 30-some yards to each shot. No. 10 is one of the Village’s toughest holes, a 425-yard par-4 moving downhill then back up and around a tree stationed at the focal point of the dogleg right. The fairway is rolling and off-camber, making the approach to a green protected by two bunkers even more trying. Opened in 1982, Coronado is the only executive-length par-62 golf course in Hot Springs Village. It is a great course to play for those looking to get in a quick 18 holes, a beginning golfer or veterans wanting to perfect their short game. But don’t be fooled. Coronado is as challenging from 150 yards as any in the Village. “It is the hardest course in the Village to shoot par,” Paul said. The fairways, tees and roughs are Common Bermuda and the greens are Penn Cross Bent grass. There are no sand bunkers at Coronado, and a three-hour round is the norm. Balboa was the next course to open in HSV, with the first tee in the ground in 1987.

Clark said that Sam Snead was brought in to help with the course’s design and even was on hand for the course’s opening, which was rained out. Rain also had a lot to do with Balboa’s early existence as the sprigs for the course’s fairways were washed away by a week-long deluge of precipitation (some say as much as 15 inches). According to low-handicap golfers in the Village, Balboa is a great test of golf and has some very tricky par-3s. The course continues to be a Village favorite, with fairways that are flatter and more wide-open, allowing golfers a mistake or two and still recover. Balboa doesn’t have as many sand traps as other Village golf courses, but has four holes where water comes into play. Balboa is a walker-friendly course that gets better with each round played. Fairways, tees and roughs are 419 Bermuda and the greens are a blend of Penn Cross and Crenshaw Bentgrass. Balboa has full country club facilities including restaurant, grill, lounge, pro shop and driving range. Golf Digest rated Balboa No. 7 in the state’s best rankings for 2005-2006.

The track plays at a challenging 6,946 yards from the back tees and has fairways, tees and roughs of Tif-way II Bermuda and greens that are a blend of Penn Link and Crenshaw Bentgrass. Ponce de Leon hosted the qualifying rounds for the PGA Nationwide Tour for three consecutive years. As good as this course is for the low-handicap golfer, by moving to one of the forward tee boxes it is equally enjoyable for the average- to highhandicap golfer. Golf Digest and Arkansas Business Journal ranked this Ponce de Leon golf course No. 3 in the state for 2005. John Daly, fresh off his win in the 1991 PGA Championship at Crooked Stick in Indiana, drove all night to be at the Monday opening of Ponce de Leon, only to be greeted by rain and wet conditions. According to Clark, Daly set up shop on the range and pounded six irons through the back of the practice area as a crowd of about 3,000 onlookers oohed and aahhed. The only true private course at Hot Springs Village is Diamante. Hailed as “one of the most challenging, yet flexible golf courses ever built,” Diamante opened in 1995 and was ranked the top course in Arkansas by Golf Digest from 1997 to 2002. Its unique design plays like five incredible Hot Springs Village golf courses in one.

Playing at a lengthy 7,560 yards from its back set of five tees, Diamante challenges both the low and high handicapper – every shot hit on the golf course has its own challenges. The track fairways were sodded with Zoysia, giving the golfer tee-like lies in the short grass and the manicured bentgrass carpet-like greens average 6,500 square feet in size. Diamante is a brute, but can be manageable if played from the correct tees. From the backs, the course has five par-4s that play at 472 yards or more, all four par-3s are more than 205 yards (including the 233-yard fourth), and the unbelievable 651-yard par-5 11th.

In 2009, Golf Digest labeled Diamante as the 38th most difficult course in the United States. Private Clubs magazine pegged Diamante as a “Monster Course” in 2006 and included it as one of the “10 Toughest ClubCorp Courses.” Additionally, in 2006, the course’s 17th hole (a risk-reward 315-yard par-4) was voted by readers of the Arkansas Democrat Gazette as their favorite two-shot hole in the state of Arkansas. Diamante hosted the Nationwide Tour’s First Tee Arkansas Classic for four consecutive years from 2001 until 2004. Next to debut was Magellan in 1996, which began as a golf school with three

holes. Still one of the shorter courses in the Village (at 6,494 yards). Magellan’s tricky greens get the best of most golfers. Magellan is long on great golf holes, so golfers shouldn’t be fooled by the length on the scorecard; it’s a challenge for all skill levels and a favorite for both men and women. The track is consistently rated as one of the Village’s top three courses. “Some of the best holes of golf in the Village are here,” Paul said. It was ranked by Golf Digest as the 5th Best Course in Arkansas in 2000. Magellan continues to boast the best practice facilities in the Village with a large driving range, a newly constructed putting green and several short-game areas. While it’s no rollercoaster, the 27-hole Isabella course has almost as many twists and turns. The original 18 holes, now called the Nina and the Pinta, were completed in September 2000, and the course was subsequently ranked as the top course in Arkansas by Golf Digest and the Arkansas Business Journal. In 2006 the Santa Maria nine was added to increase the challenge and give Isabella loads of flexibility and plenty of options. Each of the nines was routed with wide fairways, beautiful scenery and five sets of tees. The meat of Isabella’s challenge is its brut-

ish two-shotters; two on each of the ninehole configurations play at more than 440 yards from the back set of tees. Nina plays at 3,486 yards from the tips. Its three toughest holes are par-4s; No. 3, 7 and 9, respectively. Pinta, carded at 3,575 yards, turns the distance up a notch, but also brings more water into play, especially on the 334yard, risk-reward sixth hole, which can be attacked from the tee if the player is precise and long. Just when you think the challenge couldn’t be tougher, Clark hits you with Santa Maria, which plays at an even-longer than carded 3,630 yards from the tips – and that’s with the 158-yard par-3 fourth in the middle of the nine. The round at Santa Maria also features the 580-yard par-5 fifth with its 43-yard deep green, and ends with the amazing 487yard par-4 ninth, which has a kidney-shaped green just 20 yards deep. What variety. The newest course in the Village’s family is Granada, a rollicking good time at 7,115 yards from the back set of five tees. Here Ault and Clark fashioned long fairways and generous landing areas between creeks and the ever-present forest, all routed over rolling land. How expansive is Granada? Almost seven miles of cart paths are needed to traverse the

par-72 track – but the course actually plays shorter that the yardage. Opened in the fall of 2004, Granada is arguably the most scenic course in the Village and it’s one of the community’s toughest as well. Granada’s par-3s are testing; three are at least 205 yards from the back tees, and the par-5 15th weighs in at a whopping 586 yards, with water, trees and sand all coming into play. One of the best and most difficult holes on the course is the 465-yard par-4 17th, which has a green 55 yards from front to back. The final four holes at Granada, with three par-4s of 420 yards or better surrounding the massive par-5 16th, are a great finishing run to the clubhouse. This is a course that can be enjoyed but has to be taken very seriously, as small mistakes – the approach left short, the threeputt on one of the holes the player needs to score well on or the errant drive – will compile the difficulty. Hot Springs Village will host three open houses in 2012 – on March 31, June 23 and Sept. 8 – to help introduce the uninitiated to the charms of the community. Those attending will receive a free gift, as if getting a peak behind the curtain is not enough.

There are parts of New Mexico that seem not to have changed through the eons, stretches of wide, rose-colored deserts to broken mesas to heavily forested mountain wildernesses at the bases of high, snowcapped peaks. The state – America’s 47th – is one of our country’s least populated, with fewer people than the city of San Antonio, Texas, despite having more area in its borders than all but four states. Those aspects combine to make New Mexico a great place for golf, thanks to the industry’s doctrine of adhering to the environment and players desire to find courses that merge challenging routings, superb conditions, memorable vistas and splendid isolation. get to from all points north, south, east and west, has to be considered one of the United States’ most underrated places to tee it up. Great courses are spread across the state, but many are located in the Central and North Central sections, around the cities of Albuquerque and the state capital of Santa Fe. There are six separate regions of New Mexico (Northwest, Northeast, Southwest and Southeast are the other four): each has its own flair and differing terrain to challenge golfers. The area is one of the few places in America where you can ski in the morning and play golf in the afternoon (the average December-January high temperatures are in the upper 40s). Thanks to the influx of Native American-owned casinos and the resorts they often sprout, finding great golf is easy here.

Finding great golf is easy in Central region Albuquerque is the largest city in New Mexico, established in 1706 at the western slopes of the Sandia Mountains within the northern, upper edges of the Chihuahuan Desert. The elevation here ranges from 4,900 feet in downtown to 6,700 feet in the foothills, so playing golf in this region is comparable to playing in Denver. Any discussion about golf in Albuquerque must begin with the Championship Golf Course at the University of New Mexico. Once rated the top course in the state, the UMN Golf Course is a fine and demanding venue thanks to a combination of length and a tough routing, all amplified by ever-blowing winds. The track opened in 1967 and has undergone a number of renovations over the past 35 years. Original architect Robert “Red” Lawrence utilized naturally hilly ter-

rain to create wide, rolling and tilted fairways with many elevation changes. Long and tough from the tournament tees, where it plays to a par of 72 at 7,562 yards, 135 rating and 75.4 slope, UNM Golf Course is not a true desert track, even though its holes meander through arid terrain that is home to rabbits, roadrunners, owls and hawks. Casino courses in the Albuquerque area are among the best of that category anywhere. Leading the way is the Sandia Golf Club, developed by the Pueblo of Sandia as an adjunct of the eponymously resort and casino on the property. Opened in June 2005, the course is big-shouldered and fun, routed by golf architect Scott Miller through a highdesert landscape and offers panoramic views of the Sandia Mountains, Rio Grande River, Corrales Bosque and the greater Albuquerque area. Carded at 7,772 yards from the tips, it’s Two treats near Albuquerque, above, Sandia Golf Club and below, Paa-Ko Ridge. the longest course in New Mexico. Sandia’s layout is quite different from many contemporary target-style golf courses. Miller and the Pueblo felt it was important to build a layout where players were given adequate areas that place a premium on well-executed shots versus indifferent ones, and a course that is accessible but tough to score on. Southwest of town across the street from the burgeoning Hard Rock Hotel and Casino (of which it is an amenity), the Bill Phillipsfashioned Isleta Eagle Golf Course offers three nine-hole sides that can be played in 18-hole combinations on the Pueblo of Isleta’s vast high-desert reservation. Opened in 1996 and named after their primary topographic feature - Lakes, Arroyo and Mesa – the courses run along the Rio Grande and feature typical desert conditions with extraordinary panoramic views from the tees. The greens are mid-sized and have contour, and the fairways are undulating, creating challenging uneven lies, with natural roughs on the borders. Some 15 miles north of Albuquerque on rolling desert at the base of the Sandia Mountains, the sacred land of the Santa Ana Pueblo is home to two striking, and very different, golf courses, each noted for its beauty and challenge. The courses – Twin Warriors Golf Club and Santa Ana Golf Club – are set on acreage surrounded by the grandeur of the Jemez Mountains to the west, the Sangre de Cristos to the north and the Sandia Mountains immediately east, and are woven through sand, cactus, scrub brush and rock. Routed on ridges dotted with juniper and pinon pine and around 20 ancient cultural sites of the natives’ previous habitation and activity, Twin Warriors is one of the top courses in New Mexico. Designed by Gary Panks, the track opened in 2001 and was the Land of Enchantment’s first high-desert destination course. The contrast of reds and browns of the desert and the lush green knolls, mounds, fairways and greens makes Twin Warriors a Southwestern golf experience to cherish and enjoy. Deep, winding arroyos and eroded land features, along with the sacred butte known as Tuyuna or “Snakehead” Mesa, add to the vistas. Just a minute nearer to Albuquerque than Twin Warriors are the three nine-hole layouts at Santa Ana Golf Club. Called Tamaya, Cheena and Star, the trio can be combined to play as three different 18-hole, par-72 combinations. Designed by Ken Killian and opened in 1990, Santa Ana is much flatter than Twin Warriors, using subtle mounding bordered by native grasses and eight crystal-blue lakes for topographical nuances. The course borders the Rio Grande River and also features some of the most consistently quick and difficult greens in the region. Another must-play in the Central region is the Ken Dye-designed Paa-Ko-Ridge, which is carved through a forest of pinon and juniper evergreens, with some specimen ponderosa pines near the landing areas and greens to make the course stand apart from the region’s other high-desert venues. Opened for play with 18 holes in April 2000 and later expanded to 27 holes in 2005, Paa-Ko Ridge features multiple mountain views and strong shot values. The course also sports many big, bold features, undulating putting surfaces and plenty of risk-reward opportunities. Golf Digest ranks it No. 20 on its list of America’s 100 “Greatest Public Courses” and as the top course in New Mexico.

Despite Spann’s craftsmanship, the nature of the land is the course’s best feature. Sightlines of the Jemez and Sangre de Cristo Mountains and far-away sandstone spires rise above the manicured acreage, while native arroyos dissect and act as borders for the verdant fairways. Much has been said and written about Spann’s work at Black Mesa, but the proof is in the pudding. Absent of any man-made or artificial distraction, the course seems as if it were placed on the rolling landscape, its holes little green areas among all the grays and brown and blacks of the living desert. And while Black Mesa seems daunting almost from the first shot, it’s actually very playable, with expansive fairways and greens big enough to sport various pin placements without gimmickry. Closer to Santa Fe, in the scenic Pojoaque Valley on tribal land of the Pojoaque Pueblo, Towa Golf Club features three nine-hole tracks, with another nine scheduled to open for play in mid-2012. The courses surround the opulent Buffalo Thunder Resort, New Mexico’s largest and most expensive resort, with an estimated cost of more than $250 million. Towa is made up of four nine-hole tracks: Boulder and Piñon (both which opened in 2001), Valley (2009) and the But-

terfly Nine, which opened in 2005 and is currently closed for improvements and set to reopen in 2012. The rolling land here is crossed and bordered by ball-grabbing, red-dirt arroyos and indigenous piñon trees. Sandstone rock formations also enter play among a series of ridges that dissect the courses as the Sangre de Cristo and Jemez Mountains provide scenic golf backdrops and way-out-there views. Three-time U.S. Open winner Hale Irwin designed the Valley and Piñon nines, while Tucson-based landscape architect and golf-course designer Bill Phillips fashioned Boulder and Butterfly. The city of Santa Fe-owned Marty Sanchez Links de Santa Fe on the western edge of the state capital is a scenic haven among the rolling hills and evergreen trees in a valley with four mountain ranges. Native grasses separate fairways, many of which have raised sides to help shots more easily find the short grass. “Marty,” as locals call the track named after a former Santa Fe amateur champion who died of cancer in young adulthood, offers a country-club experience at “muni” prices. Designed by Spann, Marty Sanchez Links de Santa Fe is a gorgeous yet testy journey punctuated by massive greenside bunkers.

See the land like O’Keefe did

The landscape of the North Central region around Santa Fe inspired Georgia O’Keefe’s startlingly colorful and original paintings and has produced the palate for a handful of great golf courses. If O’Keefe had been a golfer, she would have loved the course Baxter Spann found at Black Mesa Golf Club. The sublime track is set in the high-desert sandstone ridges near the confluence of the Rio Grande, Cham and Rio Santa Cruz rivers north of Santa Fe on Santa Clara Pueblo Indian land, in the small town of La Mesilla. www.golfoklahoma.org •••••• 19

Many consider it one of the best municipal courses in the Southwest. The moment you approach the first tee, you’ll be knocked out by the mountain views, a stunning feature that remains constant through the round. Mountainous conditions create other challenges Driving north and east of Santa Fe the land goes flat for a 50-mile stretch and is split by the Rio Grande Gorge and then heads back up into the evergreens. Leaving Taos, one heads east on the Enchanted Circle (a too-short, very scenic 86-mile switchback journey) until the town of Angel Fire comes into view. Set in the Moreno Valley, high in the heart of the Sangre de Christo Mountains. Angel Fire was for years a secret hideaway that became just too good to contain. Up here, the light created as the morning sun reflects off the dew-covered leaves of the aspens dotting the mountainsides gives the area its name and many stunning vistas. The Paul Ortiz-designed course at the Angel Fire Resort & Country Club meanders out and back from an expansive new clubhouse set at about 8,700 feet, offering mountain golf with two distinct flavors. The front-nine works its way through towering trees, while the inward side winds over mountain meadows and features rolling fairways, meander-

ing streams and plenty of bunkers. Added to the mix are the course’s elevation changes and, with the seemingly never-ending wind, Angel Fire can be a bear. Water comes into play on 16 holes and there’s a bevy of tests on the tight and demanding routing. Three hours south of Albuquerque in New Mexico’s Southeast region, three courses have for years set the bar for excellent dailyfee golf. Begin a trip to the area in Ruidoso in the shadow of 12,000-foot Sierra Blanca for a round at the Links at Sierra Blanca. Champions Tour player Jim Colbert and golf architect Jeff Brauer tore up the tarmac of the old Sierra Blanca Regional Airport to build the course and removed the old hangars and buildings while using smart land management to form the signature high, rolling mounds throughout the layout. Players are amazed the architects brought no dirt onto or off of the property as towering artificial mounds pop up everywhere. A stalwart of the region around Ruidoso is the golf course at the Inn of the Mountain Gods, an upscale casino property owned and operated by the Mescalero Apache. The track was designed by Ted Robinson and opened in 1976 and features an island fairway, landing areas lined by trees, fast-break-

ing greens and superb vistas. Players here contend with the challenge of teeing up at an elevation of 7,200 feet in land bordering massive Lincoln National Forest. Head further into the Sacramento Mountains and one will eventually find the town of Cloudcroft and the famous Lodge at Cloudcroft. A mainstay of the property is nine-hole golf course situated at 9,200 feet above sea level, the fifth highest layout in the United States. It was built near a previous track established in 1899, and is the oldest course in New Mexico. Carved out of a pine forest with rolling greens, this course is pure fun and an absolute ego builder. Routed on a former cabbage patch in Chautauqua Canyon, the Lodge course starts the blood rushing on the first hole, a 251-yard par-4 that descends 200 feet straight downhill. Golf in New Mexico, whether is in the high desert or the mountains, on remote resorts, casino property or at municipal tracks, is challenging affordable and fun. Throw in the crisp, clean air, the relative isolation and a few stops for New Mexican food at the local haunts (where golfers will be asked the most important question of the trip – red or green?) and there’s plenty to like about an excursion to the Land of Enchantment.

The Perfect Golf Trip?

Pulling it off requires planning, flexibility and ear plugs by tom bedell

Does anyone snore? is not the first question that needs to be answered when planning a golf trip with fellow players. It’s probably about the sixth, though it should be asked, since if room sharing is a part of the ultimate plan someone like Steve could be lurking. In a group I travel with on a more or less annual basis, Steve is a definite planning factor, as in planning around. Because Steve not only snores – hey, we all snore a little, right? – but he snores long and loudly enough to raise the dead. Heavy sleepers could be vibrated awake by the rattling, catarrhal train wreck that is Steve’s snore. Light sleepers ran the risk of being awakened even when Steve had his own room downstairs from everyone else in the group. There was never any question of excluding Steve, because he’s such a likeable guy in the waking hours. But it does point out, said Sam Baker, that the first question that comes up when the germ of a golf trip is planted is neither Where? nor How much? As the founder and CEO of the golf travel company Haversham & Baker, Sam has seen it all in terms of planning. “I’ve been doing this professionally for 20 years now, and I know that when that initial call goes from one guy to another, the first question is: ‘Who’s going?’ Let’s face it: most golfers live in mortal fear of spending an extended amount of time with an asshole.”

My cousin, Robert Pierce, made an annual Myrtle Beach trip for more than a dozen years, and then the same group (originally 16, then 12, and finally eight) went to Florida for a handful of years. “We would always have one guy that planned it, but we’d usually stay at one place that had two or three courses. Then we’d pick a few other tracks so we wouldn’t have to travel that much. That’s because we’d play 36 a day every day at first. “Ultimately we cut it down to 27 holes a day, and finally only 18 a day with one ninehole scramble day. We’re were getting too old to get up so early in the morning. Or too hung-over.”

vations,” said Thomas Ely, the Bishop of Vermont. “But I suppose the toughest thing is coordinating everyone’s arrival and rental cars, and seeing who’s taking part in the pretournament golf trip.” The third question for planners is the selfevident, When? If the foursome, eightsome or whateversome is set, a date has to be found when everyone can work it in. And it obviously works with the Where? question, since dates have to take in high or low seasons at the destination, not to mention the most favorable weather dates. “No question,” said Pierce, “setting the date was the hardest thing.”

BELLING THE CAT

Then we move onto the fourth query, which is actually often more of a statement than a question, as in: “Honey, some of the boys [or girls] are thinking about talking a golf trip...” The question part of this conversational gambit – “What do you think?” – can be as delicate as handling nitroglycerin, hence it is best not uttered out loud, but left to the implications in the wind. One’s spouse will likely and readily supply the fifth question: “How much will it all cost?” With that cat out of the bag, planning can begin in earnest. Cost can rule out all sorts of options and participants, and open up the discussion as to whether the trip will remain domestic or foreign, self-planned or handed over to specialists. Sam Baker, one of the specialists, nonetheless knows when he’s not needed: “If you think about a golf trip in terms of building, the truth is that the simpler the task the more likely you can do it yourself. If it’s a tworoom cabin, it’s not too complicated. But the more rooms you add, the more complex the

situation gets. Then it begins to make sense to put it in the hands of someone who does it dozens of times a year.” In other words, a three-day jaunt to a multi-course golf resort is easy to set up. But heading overseas with a plan to play seven to ten courses in eight days is another ball game altogether. Baker said, “If you plan to stay in three or four different places you have to face the fact that it will take anywhere from 30 to 50 different sets of arrangements and reservations.” He’s seen many a long thought-out, but still unrealistic plan, often including impossible travel times between courses. First-timers to Ireland, for example, often look only at the mileage, assuming cars whip along as they do in the U.S. But anyone who has actually traveled some of the narrow and winding Irish roads knows better. Other plans have included Sunday rounds on the Old Course in St. Andrews. “The only way you play St. Andrews on a Sunday, when it’s normally closed,” said Baker, “is if you’re qualifying for the Open Championship.”

But Baker draws a distinction between price and value. “You can have two sets of arrangements at the same hotels and playing the same courses and one experience is completely different because you wasted time looking for places to eat, and then ate at the wrong places, all while crammed into a vehicle that’s too small. “Plus you may miss what you shouldn’t – the plaque on the sixteenth hole of Royal Birkdale where Palmer slashed out of the rough on the way to his first Open Championship in 1961, or in knowing beforehand that Harry Vardon called the 14th hole at Royal Dornoch in Scotland the greatest natural par-4 in the world. We’ve done all that research for you already.”

THE LEADER, THE BANKER

Someone – and one is key word here – has to take the lead for planning, even if he or she is the one to hire a golf touring comEXTRAS pany. It can be a tough job to arrange all the Haversham & Baker draws over 95 per- accommodations and golf – albeit easier in

the internet era – while figuring out who has allergies to goose feathers or soft shell crabs, and then taking the heat for all that goes wrong. Provided the leader isn’t a dictator, he’s owed a certain amount of obeisance. But the leader should know that there’s nothing wrong with making others a part of the team by delegating responsibility. Enter the banker – the player to keep track of all the handicaps, scores, and bets. I wouldn’t take this job for, well, for the entire pot. That is, until I learned about Grow the Game Golf on a recent weeklong trip to Scottsdale, Arizona. A new cross-platform web and smartphone app, GTG Golf can be pre-programmed with all the data for course, matches, players, handicap and particular games (one best ball, two best ball, team, gross, net scores and more) and all easily computed as the day wears on simply by entering scores on one’s smartphone. And if you have the nerve, all this information can be beamed back to friends (or spouses) who weren’t able to make the trip. About the only thing it can’t do is sink that four-footer for you, or cure Steve’s snoring.

RV There, Yet?

Golf, tailgating and the Fountain of Youth by beau adams

Several years ago, a reporter with the Savannah Morning News was tasked with the assignment of writing a piece on recreational vehicles. Not having much experience in motor-coaching, he called the local newsstand and asked if they carried RV Magazine. The clerk confirmed that they did and that he would have a courier run it down to the News as was customary. Thirty minutes later, the reporter was called to the editor’s office and asked to quickly explain why he had requested the delivery of, and had authorized payment for, the inappropriate Rear View Magazine. Armed with that knowledge, this reporter made a more careful foray into the world of recreational vehicles and discovered that these folks are having good, clean fun. I met up with Randy Nisbett, RV expert and tailgating raconteur, on a dreary Bedlam Game morning at the Oklahoma State University RV lot on campus in Stillwater. You would think that massive amounts of rain, cooler than expected temperatures, and an eight-hour head start on game time would have been a less than ideal situation for an interview. The truth is, it was fantastic. RV’ers were watching games on satellite from other time zones, smoking various cuts of meat, and driving their golf carts around the lot – giving the whole scene the feeling of a miniature city with RVs for skyscrapers. One of the things about owning an RV is that no matter what Mother Nature throws your way, the party can still go on. These are fully functioning homes on wheels. Truth be told, they are nicer (and more ex24 •••••• www.golfoklahoma.org

pensive) than most traditional homes. This isn’t your grandfather’s smelly old pop-up trailer. There wasn’t a hint of naugahyde in any of the motor homes I toured. These things have more granite countertop space than an urban loft and higher-end appliances than most suburban homes. They have cedar-lined closets, full and half baths as well as laundry facilities. And let’s not forget the televisions. For the love of flatpanels, you can’t believe how many televisions you can pack into (and attach to the exterior of) one of these things. These are fully functioning, climate controlled landyachts. This is hardly “roughing it.” Given the luxury of these vehicles, it is

not difficult to understand why touring pros have been adopting them as their travel mode of choice over the last few years. John Daly has one. Davis Love III does as well. Rory Sabbatini even has a blog dedicated to his travels in the big rig. RV dealer to the stars, Lee Litchfield of Lee’s RVs right here in Oklahoma, explains why the jet-set is choosing to tour sans jet. “Less hassle than owning or chartering jets, the ability to sleep in your own bed with your own sheets, the opportunity to bring all travel necessities with you, privacy, flexibility of travel schedule. The list goes on.” For the non-touring pro, RVing presents an opportunity to gather your buddies, explore a golf trail in its entirety, and lead tailgate festivities on the ensuing weekend. But it does more than that. RVing is about fellowship. It’s about meeting with like-minded people and sharing stories, exchanging information about the best trips to take with your rig. It’s about joining an RV club and being initiated into a group where no one is a stranger. It’s rotary club for the traveling set. It’s also about camping. Kind of. Litchfield says, “Ask any RVer what it is that they love about spending a week in one of these RVs and the story will inevitably start with the phrase, ‘You know, when I was little...’” A common thread that runs through the

fascination with RVing is an early memory of a positive camping experience. Nostalgia tugs hard at the heart strings of RV’ers. Time and time again while interviewing subjects for this piece I listened to stories of trips taken with the family pop-up trailer in tow, or campouts with scout squads. For anyone who has been fortunate enough to

commune with nature, to sleep under the stars in wonder, RVing is the grown-up version of that experience. It doesn’t matter that inside your coach there may be wine rack stocked with vintage bordeaux and a professional-grade refrigerator full of Omaha steaks - you are still sleeping under the stars. In fact, you can see them if you peer

through the skylight above your king-size memory foam bed. After you have been given a tour of one of these coaches, touring the links with your pals or spending the weekend tailgating seems like the least you should be doing in one. Visions of cross country trips run through your brain. Images of smiling families next to national monuments, shaded in cathedrals of giant sequoias, peering over the edge of the Grand Canyon – all of these seem an attainable feat with an RV. Of course, knocking back some brews with the boys at a tailgate or exploring the best courses the Gulf Shores has to offer doesn’t seem like a bad idea, either.

Great Escapes Try Nova Scotia for stunning oceanside golf

In the far off reaches of eastern Canada, Nova Scotia rises from the Atlantic Ocean, a green lush summer playground for those vacationers who like their beaches and sand, both on and off the golf course. Some like to think of the province as an island and it would be if not for the Isthmus of Chignecto that hooks Nova Scotia to mainland Canada. So that’s partially the reason it’s called Canada’s ‘Ocean Playground.’ Being nearly surrounded by the sea, the gentle breezes off the water keep the summer temperatures very comfortable, especially for golf. Nova Scotia has more than 50 18-hole golf courses (http://golfingns.com) spread out over terrain that includes both sandy and rocky coastline, fertile valley, pastoral regions and the Highlands of Cape Breton. Several of the province’s top courses border on the ocean and the nautical backdrop adds to the pleasure of playing such notable 26 •••••• www.golfoklahoma.org

designs as Northumberland Links and Fox Harb’r along the Northumberland Strait; The Pines overlooking the Bay of Fundy which boasts the world’s highest tides; Chester, on the Shores of the Atlantic Ocean, and Bell Bay in Baddeck, that overlooks the Bras d’Or Lake, a large salt water lake often referred to as Canada’s inland sea. Two further designs, The Highlands Links, often referred to as Stanley Thompson’s ‘mountains to ocean course’ and Cabot Links, a pure links design opening this year, both on Cape Breton Island at the province’s most easterly end, are musts on any golf trip to the province. Both courses have received numerous accolades, one for its design that has stood the test of time and the other for its uniqueness in Canada’s golf landscape, The Highlands Links (www.highlandslinksgolf.com) in Cape Breton Highlands National Park and opened in 1941, is considered one of country’s  top public courses

and in fact was ranked 79th  in 2007 by Golf Magazine in the publication’s 100 best golf courses in the world. In 2009 Golf Digest ranked The Highlands Links No. 42 in the best 100 courses outside the U.S. The beauty of the course is not just in its design but also in its location. Opening holes are routed along the Atlantic Ocean and then the course swings inland through the hills and valleys and along the Clyburn River in the park. The course plays 6,800 yards from the tips, short by today’s standards, but the small, undulating greens and narrow, rolling fairways make this a true Thompson classic. Parks Canada, under the guidance of Canadian architect Ian Andrew, is now restoring many of the course’s features lost over time, to their original state. Cabot Links (http://cabotlinks.com), which had a partial opening in 2011, is built on a former coal mining site and is sand-

This pure Scottish links-style course is wide open to the elements with views of the ocean from every hole. There are no trees to protect from the winds off the sea. There are deep pot bunkers, large greens including a double green with swales and pronounced breaks. And there is thick gorse that will swallow up any golf ball that strays from the fairway. Five holes stretch along nearly two kilometers of beach, and sand from the shoreline drifts over a boardwalk and onto the course. It is a totally walking golf course but there are exceptions for those with medical reasons to ride. Course developers Ben Cowan-Dewar, a Toronto businessman who now resides in Inverness, and partner Mike Keiser, a Chicago-based businessman who developed the highly successful Bandon Dunes golf resort

in Oregon, have put this project together on a piece of land that will challenge all who get the opportunity to play it. “My goal from the outset was to build something great and that was all I focused on,” said Cowan-Dewar. “Do I hope this sits among Canada’s great courses? I do. But where it falls, it will fall. We can only do the best job we can and put it out there for other people to judge,” he said. The course, designed by Rod Whitman of Alberta, has already been heralded in many golf publications across North America as Canada’s only true links golf course. Golf in Nova Scotia, and throughout Atlantic Canada where summer temperatures range between 75 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit,, is very affordable with green fees ranging from $40 (CDN) to $100, with very few exceptions above the $100 price. Beyond the golf course, the province offers numerous recreational activities and

sightseeing opportunities. Hiking, biking, canoeing, winery tours, seafood experiences, museums, sailing, deep-sea fishing and of course the beaches, are just some of the attractions. The port city of Halifax, for example, is the East Coast base for Canada’s Navy and a major cargo port. It was founded in 1749 and offers major historical venues to visit and enjoy. Three major travel publications, Lonely Planet, CNN.com and National Geographic Traveler have all included Nova Scotia in their lists of 2012 destinations. Listed among attractions is the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic which occurred April 12, 1912. Three ships were sent from Halifax to bring back those who died in the disaster. LA ROMANA, Dominican Republic – As the first and most recognized championship course in the Caribbean, Teeth of the Dog at Casa de Campo is Pete Dye’s original masterpiece and needs little introduction to the golf traveling public, but a recent renovation to the 7,000-acre Casa de Campo and its associated courses have put a new shine on an old favorite. The luxury resort, fewer than eight minutes from La Romana International Airport, offers 63 total holes for play on three golf courses, Teeth of the Dog, Dye Fore and The Links, which is undergoing a total renovation and will open March 2012. Teeth of the Dog, which opened in 1971 and is celebrating its 40th anniversary, helped cement Dye’s worldwide reputation for dramatic golf, being the only course in the world with seven Caribbean-edged holes. The seaside course, originally named Cajuiles I, was built entirely by hand by a crew of 300 Dominican workers who used sledgehammers, pickaxes and chisels to carve the course out of rugged coral rock. The crew referred to the unforgiving parcel of land as Dientes del Perro, or “Teeth of the Dog” while constructing it. Pete Dye liked the name and it stuck. The ocean and strong Caribbean winds come into play on holes 5-8 and 15-17. The par-3 fifth hole is perhaps the most famous, jutting out into the ocean from the back tee, which plays 170 yards, and features danger at every turn as water is lurking all along the left side and huge bunkers line the left edge of the fairway. Dye was so captivated by the ocean views

along the front nine that he built a summer home overlooking the holes. The back nine, which curves along another stretch of beach, is equally scenic or scary, depending on the shot, but requires precision to avoid being bitten by the dog (as the locals call it). At Dye Fore, which opened in 2001, Dye designed a course perched on bluffs towering 300 feet above the Chavon River. He opened a new nine last fall called Dye Fore Lakes which connects with Dye Fore Chavon, the original north nine, and the Marina Nine, the original south nine. The latest holes are mainly inland and heavily forested with manmade lakes. The original 18 holes of Dye Fore are by far the most dramatic, especially the par-3’s, holes 12 and 15, and the massive par-5 18th hole which climbs dramatically upwards to a large green. Of course, when you’re finished with golf, tennis, shooting and spa treatments for the day, there may still be time for a dip at Minitas Beach or five-star dining at the famed Beach Club by Le Cirque. Agronomic laboratory makes for unique course

FarmLinks offers golfers a journey through a wide variety of turfgrasses and conditions. The saying “There is only so much in a name” perhaps never rang more true than at FarmLinks. After all, the name FarmLinks might conjure up any number of images. Such as golf holes skirting old red barns, windmills, stables and making their way through pastureland replete with livestock and crops. This does not mean FarmLinks is not an appropriate name. In fact it is perhaps the name that best describes this one-of-a-kind golf property. After all, FarmLinks is located on Purcell Farms, where they raise Longhorn cattle, the inspiration behind the FarmLinks logo. But perhaps the best reason the name is perfect is because of the golf course’s purpose: To be a research and demonstration venue to help superintendents grow better turf grass. To the golfer visiting FarmLinks the name will come to mean much more. When one arrives at Purcell Farms and starts the drive down FarmLinks Boulevard, it is soon apparent the journey to this secluded golfing retreat located 45 miles from Birmingham, Ala., was well worth it. The 2½-mile entry road winds by the herd of grazing Longhorn steers, then plunges in and out of mixed hardwoods. You are well into the 3,500-acre property when a portion

of the golf course suddenly presents itself. The road climbs to the clubhouse, which overlooks the 18th green. Along the way there are turnoffs points to various other key facilities visitors can utilize. Parker Lodge, opened in 2001, overlooks the 17th green. The Lodge can host up to 29 guests and housed the small groups of golfrelated professionals who attended FarmLinks educational events. Designers Dana Hurdzan and Mike Fry did an excellent job of routing the course and using the dramatic lay of the land to send the golfer on a memorable adventure. A reminder of the past can be found on the par-4 seventh hole, where a tire swing hanging from an oak tree beckons one back to the simple pleasures of childhood. And within the boundary of Purcell Farms the guest may take advantage of activities that offer both adventure and refreshment. These include fishing in the numerous lakes that dot the landscape, a five-stand clay shooting range and the availability of a guided hunting excursion for quail or other game in season. At 7,444 yards from the back tees FarmLinks is challenging, but also fair. For the most part the fairways at FarmLinks are generous in their width. got great quality courses at both the lake and in Branson. There are a lot of great things to do in both places. We think both destinations have a lot to offer for everyone.” Hovis’ marketing efforts will focus on states within a day’s drive in all directions. Golfers to the north will find Missouri’s extended seasons attractive, while golfers in Oklahoma and Texas enjoy not only shoulder seasons but the woods and water offer a nice summer respite as well. Both the Branson and Lake of the Ozark areas have enough quality golf to keep a group entertained for a week or you could easily spend a few days in each location for a real sample of Missouri golf. Three Branson tracks are listed on Golfweek’s Top Five courses you can play in the state, including Branson Creek at No. 1, Payne Stewart GC at No. 3 and Murder Rock at No. 4. The Lake of the Ozarks area is highlighted by such tasty offerings as Arnold Palmers Osage National, Tom Weiskopf’s Old Kinderhook and The Cove by Robert Trent Jones Sr. As the Missouri Golf Trail grows in reputation and stature, Hovis hopes to add some of the other state treasures to the website, including great golf in Kansas City, St. Louis, Springfield and other cities.

Off-Season Training The winter months can be challenging for golfers, but there are some specific things you can do to improve your game and prepare for the next season. Gaillardia hits

n the early 1990s, there were snickers about what the Gaylord family intended to do with 590 acres of cow pasture they owned in northwest Oklahoma City. The Gaylords intended to transform a seemingly non-descript slab of land into an exclusive community. They believed there was untapped territory for upscale living in area. Nichols Hills was roughly 10 miles to the south, not far from downtown Oklahoma City. Oak Tree was roughly 15 miles to the north in Edmond. Between the two would be a developmental splendor known as Gaillardia (“ga-LAHR-dee-uh”). The name was chosen for several reasons. Oklahoma’s official wild flower, the Indian blanket, is in the Gaillardia flower family. In addition, E.K. Gaylord, founder of The Oklahoma Publishing Co., used Gaillardia to name a vacation cabin the family owned in Estes Park, Colo., near Rocky Mountain National Park. 34 •••••• www.golfoklahoma.org

No matter what the name, naysayers believed Gaillardia was too grandiose to take flight and the Gaylords would have to wait till their cows came home. Others literally had faith. Norman Neaves, senior minister at Church of the Servant, said his congregation chose its church site in 1987 partly because worshipers knew the Gaylord family owned the property across the street. “We knew whatever was done here would have quality,” Neaves said at the groundbreaking on Sept. 14, 1995. Turns out the Gaylords weren’t crazy and their development has gone plum loco. That cow pasture became a $100-million development, a 24-hour gated community featuring an 18-hole private golf course and country club with tennis courts, a swimming pool and spa, a fitness center, a world-class golf learning center and practice facility. The 300 residential lots range from villas, manors and country estates that are priced from $420,000 to $2.55 million. There are 65 acres of private lakes, connecting streams, land-

scaped fountains and waterfalls. Low-rise, high-scale commercial buildings and retail shops border the property. Towering above it all is an opulant 55,000-square-foot, threelevel, French Normandy clubhouse visible from miles around. Another towering figure on the property is two-time NBA scoring champion Kevin Durant, the Oklahoma City Thunder AllStar who purchased a 3,460-square-foot house for $1,799,500 last April. Thunder ownership chairman Clay Bennett is president of Dorchester Capital, a private investment company, and former manager of real estate and local investments for OPUBCO Development Co. He has been involved in some of city’s largest real estate deals. It was Bennett who directed the development of Gaillardia. Thanks in large part to the affluence and influence of Gaillardia, surrounding areas have exploded, including the Deer Creek School District. Gaillardia got a boost of exposure when a Shell’s Wonderful World of Golf match between Phil Mickelson and Fred Couples was held at the club in September 2000. Mickelson shot 66 and Couples 71 before a gallery of 2,000 spectators, who endured temperatures in the mid-90s for the madefor-TV event. Gaillardia then hosted the 2001 and 2002 PGA Senior Tour Championships, seasonending events won by Bob Gilder and Tom Watson, respectively.

Herrington Inc., a private equity firm in Little Rock, Ark., bought the property from the Gaylord family and subsidiaries of The Oklahoma Publishing Co. on Dec. 31, 2002. Though owner Phil Herrington was excited about the purchase, he wasn’t so excited about the golf course itself. The original layout came from renowned architect Arthur Hills, who designed 185 new courses in his career. Construction began Dec. 5, 1995, and the course opened in the spring of 1998. Even on a dead-calm day, the wind frequently blows 10-15 mph at Gaillardia, which is slightly elevated. “I want every course to be different, to play different,” Hills said at the time. “I want there to be challenges like wind. After all, this isn’t bowling.” Hills, who also designed nearby Rose Creek Golf Club located three miles to the east, tries to build courses that naturally relate to their land. In Hills’ eyes, the Gaillardia property best related to Scotland, which resulted in a Scottish links course carved from a former cow pasture. “I prefer an indigenous, native-looking golf course,” Hills said. “Right away, I thought it had potential.” Some of the most revered golf courses in the world offer a world-class layout, yet have a modest clubhouse. Gaillardia was the exact opposite, which is why Herrington ordered a $3.5 million renovation in the course’s sixth year of existence.

The redesign was done by Hall of Famer Tom Kite and the now defunct firm of Kite, Randy Russell and Roy Bechtol. “Gaillardia is the kind of club that can be one of the great, premier clubs in the country,’’ Herrington said at the time. “What they did in establishing this club is something that only a few families in the country are capable of doing. When you look at the caliber of the clubhouse, it is literally one of the finest in North America. “While we thought the golf course was a good one, we didn’t think the golf course and the overall golf experience was up to that same standard.” Kite emphasized bold bunkers, improved sight lines and brought greater visibility of existing water features and new lakes. “We worked hard to design a course that is a little more pleasing to the eye, a little more pleasing to golfers’ shot selections and a track where good shots would be rewarded and poor shots would be penalized but not absolutely killed,” Kite said. Native grass areas were mown and trees were planted to help with the course’s framing. The 102 bunkers on the course were changed. Many were moved or eliminated. Those that remained were deeper and bolder with flash faces. “The bunkers will now tell the golfers,

‘DON’T GO HERE,’ ‘’ said former touring pro Jim Woodward, who was then the director of golf. “There were several tee boxes on this course before where you stood there and really didn’t know where to hit it.’’ Kite’s redesign added some much-needed flair, a “wow” factor that helped lift the course closer to the high-scale development which surrounds it. “We started with a really good golf course,” Russell said in 2004. “It was just a little more understated than we thought it should be. We made it to where it is more definitive as to where you want to be.” Gaillardia’s identity show a little bit more year-by-year. “We’re really starting to have more of our own character,” Vitali said. “The course has got some maturity over the years. We have some man-made water features that are just outstanding. Texan loves Oklahoma golf by robert krug

I have to admit up front that I’ve done some unusual things in my 42-year golf career. (First off, it’s my golf so I can call it a “career.”) The highlights include two holes-in-one, golfing in 36 (and counting) states and playing Whistling Straits without having to hit out of a single sand trap (with apologies to Dustin Johnson). I’m also proud of going all 18 holes without recording a big number in a round with Justin Leonard (on The Old American, a course he helped design), playing 560 (also still counting) different courses and my legendary (in my mind) five courses in five states in a oneday trip. Numerologists might get a kick out of my five-in-five trek, since it came on my 55th birthday. But that marathon is also significant because it included the first course I played in Oklahoma. It got me started on a secondary goal, to go with my quest for 600-plus courses. I’m hoping to play at least 100 of Oklahoma’s 240something tracks . . . and at 97 (and, again, counting) I’m well on my way! I have a friend who’s past the halfway point on Texas’ list of approximately 1,040. He’s played more than 650 in the Lone Star State, along with others around the country, for his 685 total. I’ll never catch him, since he’s a few years younger and spends just as much time as I do adding to the numbers. But I’ve played plenty in Texas (345, including 198 in the DallasFort Worth area) and a number of courses the pros frequent (Straits, Colonial in Fort Worth, Harbor Town, Torrey Pines, TPC Las Colinas, TPC Las Vegas, the Donald Ross course at French Lick, Ind., and Cog Hill). There are, however, some side benefits to shooting for 100 in the Sooner State. Living near Denton (north of both Dallas and Fort Worth, where the two parts of I-35 come together) I’m closer to so many more Oklahoma courses than I am to San Antonio, Austin and Houston, where I’d have to travel (in ridiculous traffic) for the chance to add to my big list. There’s also more variety in scenery (especially in the fall) and topography in Oklahoma. I always thought the state was as flat as the Texas Longhorns in October’s Red River Rivalry, until I played Sugar Creek Canyon, Sequoyah State Park, Chickasaw Pointe, The Territory and Roman Nose. 50 •••••• www.golfoklahoma.org

I’ve come to appreciate the work of some of the state’s best architects, like the late Perry Maxwell, former Oklahoma All-American Tripp Davis, the prolific Floyd Farley and Oklahoma State grad Randy Heckenkemper. Texas has its share of well-designed courses, but there’s nothing to match Farley’s Roman Nose. And Heckenkemper’s The Territory rivals Cowboys Golf Club in Grapevine, one of the best public courses in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Of course, there’s also a casino around the bend near most of the Oklahoma courses I’ve played. Hearing the Pride of Oklahoma play Oklahoma at 5 p.m. every week day on KOMA-FM while I’m on the road is a real (steering) wheel slapper. And where else could I go to play sand green courses like Seiling and Wetumka. OK, maybe I’m just being silly about the band and sand greens (though I’m grateful to the lady from the Seiling Golf Association who sent me a scorecard and map of the course before I played there). But there’s a lot to like about crossing the Red River for golf. My first Oklahoma course was Sunset Hills in Guymon. On the morning of Oct. 7, 2002, I played Willow Tree in Liberal, Kan., a little after sunrise (first time I’d ridden around a course wrapped in a blanket), then played the front nine in Guymon around midmorning. At lunchtime the Stratford (Texas) Country Club was my third course and by mid-afternoon I was walking the Clovis, NM, municipal layout. Before my wife and I stopped for dinner I teed off at yet another municipal in Trinidad, Colo., and completed 45 holes for the day. My wife asked if I wanted to go back down the road to Raton, NM, to play the local country club . . . but I told her six courses in one day would just be silly. At the time I didn’t realize the multiple rounds in a day would become commonplace. I soon began traveling to some of the closer Oklahoma courses (from my home at Robson Ranch, a senior community near Denton, it’s only 40 minutes or so to cross the Red River). Getting to Falconhead at Burneyville was a shorter trip, time wise, than crossing the Metroplex to play one of the three Firewheel courses in Garland. The fall foliage on a trip to Kingston to play Buncombe Creek or the old Lake Texoma course was so much better than what I could see on a trip south on I-35 to play at Burleson. And at Durant, after I finished playing both Silverado and the country club, I could stop off at Choctaw Casino. No place to gamble after playing one of the City of Dallas’ municipal layouts. country club and Rock Creek in Hugo, Lake Murray and Lakeview in Ardmore, the country club and 27 holes at Riverbend in Chickasha) and areas where I could drive from one course (like the old Wetumka layout) to a second (Gil Morgan in Wewoka) to a third (Jimmie Austin in Seminole) and only put 30 or so miles on the car I asked Jack, a friend at Robson and former long-time Oklahoma resident, to join me on a couple of trips. On one we played Sulphur Hills (where Jack ran into an old friend living just off one of the holes), stopped at Wildhorse in Velma (where I learned that anytime you mention Velma to a native they’ll usually come back with “Velma-Alma”) and closed out the day at Comanche Lake, after a lady had us follow her six or seven miles rather than confuse us with directions. Long before the first trip to Oklahoma, I had played the Championship Course at the University of New Mexico for my 200th in 1997. In 2003 I reached 300 when I played Eastman Golf Links with a friend from Texas living near the Grantham, New Hampshire layout. Oklahoma courses began appearing more and more on my list from 2004 through 2007. Before I walked the nine-hole Oakhurst Golf Links in White Sulphur Springs, Virginia (where you play with hickory-shaft clubs and gutta-percha balls) for No. 400, I had played almost four dozen in Oklahoma, including my early favorite, Chickasaw Pointe. Heckenkemper’s gem in Kingston gave me my first experience with the beautiful fall foliage around Lake Texoma. Even last fall I was amazed by the early colors (mostly east of a line from Stroud to Seminole to Ada) on a two-day, six-course trip to the Tahlequah area in October. I guess some of the late September rain fooled Mother Nature. In Texas, we were brown all year! After working as a volunteer at the 2007 PGA Championship at Southern Hills, I got in my first taste of Tulsa-area golf at Cherokee Hills, LaFortune Park, Page Belcher and White Hawk. And my first experience at a major golf event led me to two more marathon golf trips. Several Oklahoma trips had a big part in helping me get from 400 to 500 in just over two years.
