AI is Golf’s Future A
rtificial intelligence or as by ed travis it has become known AI, is the hot topic in business, education, government, science and just about every other field. Even non-tech savvy people can let AI write social media posts or create original photos or drive their car plus there are lots of other important tasks such as aiding a physician making a diagnosis that are becoming parts of our lives. These applications and the thousands yet to be developed have two things in common: the need for extremely large amounts of information in accessible databases and computers of immense computing power, so-called super computers, running sophisticated software that mimics the human decision-making process. Artificial intelligence allows tackling unbelievably complex problems that until now even employing the best hi-tech tools, we have not been able to unravel, much less find answers. Our centuries old game of golf is seeing some interesting areas where AI is being used such as virtual reality swing training and fitting. The largest custom club fitter Club Champion has started to use the AI-based “Fitter Co-Pilot” to determine any player’s club specs, woods and irons, in the shortest amount of time with the least hassle. “Golfers can only swing so many times during a club fitting. This new Co-Pilot takes data from nearly one million swings per month and distills everything down to actionable data that gets our team to the solution faster,” said Nick Sherburne, founder of Club Champion and the driving force behind the new AI system. “Our fitters are directing the system, but the program is quickly narrowing our huge demo matrix Nick Sherburne down to data- supported recommendations without wasting time or energy testing components that won’t work for the golfer.” The other major area that can utilize the tools of AI is course design and more importantly course operations, especially in water use management and chemical application. The USGA has said it will spend 10

The use of AI in the coming years will be exciting and thought provoking to say the least.

business but if you did the rewards were rich. “Pat was tough, the toughest I’ve worked with but a good tough,” Moriarty said. “We were two Irish guys from working class families giving each other a hard time constantly. We didn’t mind being self depracating and we shared a lot in common. He had his routine and taught me early the importance of counting every glove or every hat. He taught us how to be honest, do the job with integrity and to just be yourself. If you earned his respect, he gave it right back and it turned into a wonderful business relationship and friendship. “He knew his business as well as anyone I’ve met and demanded you to be on your game. I’m better off because of working with him. He made me who I am today.” “Pat was the epitome of public golf. He wasn’t there like a management group that was going to suck the money out of a place. He was there to give the golfer a wonderful experience. That was because of the way he trained his employees and the vendors.” Former Tulsa County Parks Director Richard Bales, who worked closely with McCrate on the operations and capital improvements at both South Lakes and LaFortune Park for decades until his retirement in 2019, was devastated by the news. Under their working agreement, the county is responsible for hiring and funding the maintenance operations and restaurant operations while McCrate hired pro shop staff, instructors, cart room attendants and marshals under a revenue split of all income generated by greens fees, range fees and cart rentals. “Pat was a top-notch golf pro and his priority was growing the game,” Bales said. “He was constantly looking for improvements and innovations. He was extremely customer oriented and he helped grow the game tremendously in Tulsa. I was proud to work with him and proud to call him a friend.” McCrate had battled a variety of health issues in recent years including a heart issue, liver problems, gout and a recent hernia surgery. Yet he was in good spirits and looking forward to a resolution of a drawn-out contract renewal process with the county and a good year for golf in 2024 during recent visits. LaFortune Park, with its 18-hole championship course and 18-hole par-3 course, and South Lakes are consistently among the most-played courses in Oklahoma every year, partly due to the welcoming atmosphere and professional courtesy McCrate demanded of his staff. or 38 years Tim Mendenhall, 74, has shown up early and worked late, usually six days a week as the head professional and director of golf at Oakwood Country Club in Enid. In 2024, Mendenhall will transition to head professional emeritus as the club has hired Zach Tucker, 32, from Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club. “Tim is a legend and has always done what’s right for the membership,” said Cole Wasinger, Oakwood’s general manager and also an experienced PGA professional himself, having formerly been the head professional at both Southwind CC and Buffalo Dunes Golf Course in Garden City, Kan. “He has that old school mentality and pretty phenomenal energy. He’s been a father figure, grandfather, brother to generations of members and adapted well to all the different trends and things that have been thrown his way.” Tucker for the past seven years since graduating from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah has been an assistant professional at Cape Cod (Mass.) National Golf Club in 2016, Gaillardia Country Club in Oklahoma City (2017-20) and Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club (2020-23), working under the tutelage of Tim Fleming, considered by many as one of the best PGA pros in the country. Tucker is also the son of long-time Oklahoma City-area PGA professional Jeff Tucker. It’s fair to say he’s been training for this his whole life, but still he has remarkably big shoes to fill. “Tim is the epitome of what a club pro should be,” said 2021 Oklahoma Golf Hall of Fame inductee Art Proctor. “I don’t know of many people in the nation who have had as many assistant pros go on to be head professionals and that speaks volumes. He’s a first class individual, family man, competitor and a really good player. Get in line for Bandon Dunes by dan vukelich
BANDON, Ore. – Memories from Bandon Dunes include the Pacific Ocean shimmering pale blue-gray to the horizon; golfers, tiny dots of them, scattered across a plateau of green; and a beach below where ocean waves end their journey of thousands of miles in a froth of white foam. This is Mike Keiser’s vision of the game of golf, one he’s replicated elsewhere on dramatic outcroppings where the land meets the sea. It’s a vision that golfers worldwide have embraced enthusiastically. The bunkers at Bandon Dunes courses are left in their rough-edged natural state. It’s hard to believe that Bandon Dunes has been around for less than 25 years. In that time, it’s made its mark – again and again – as top golf architects working for Keiser built one masterpiece after another on that plateau of green. The Bandon Dunes Resort opened in 1999 as a destination for golfers to get back to “golf as it was meant to be,” to borrow a phrase from the resort’s marketing. Its courses play along dramatic bluffs towering 70-to125 feet above a nearly four-mile stretch of unpopulated southern Oregon coast. David MacLay Kidd built the original Bandon Dunes course, emulating the Scottish style of play that emphasizes keeping the ball low or on the ground. All courses are walking only. The Punchbowl is free and there are no tee times. There’s even oncourse beverage service. THE RESTAURANTS Counting all options, including golf clubhouse snack bars, there are 10 dining options at Bandon Dunes. The top-of-the-line restaurant is the brand-new Ghost Tree Grill off the 18th green of the Old Macdonald course. With floor-to-ceiling glass to take in sunsets, the restaurant features a raw bar with local oysters, sashimi, and Pacific Northwest seafood and steaks. McKee’s Pub at the Bandon Dunes course clubhouse serves Scottish pub fare, plus burgers and pizza. For breakfast and lunch, there’s the Tufted Puffin and The Forge, but by spring, The Forge is expected to be converted into an Italian bistro, based on results of a guest survey from a couple years ago. Other options include the Pacific Grill, Trails End with a Pacific Northwest seafoodfocused menu, the Bunker Bar, and the Library Lounge, a smallish whiskey bar that serves wraps, sandwiches and antipasto trays.

Guests at the 70-room Rosapenna hotel can play all three courses for 400 euros ($427), while St. Patrick’s alone will cost you 200. While you could be happy for a week with only the Rosapenna resort and its trio of links, you’d be remiss in missing Donegal’s other marvelous courses – enchanting Ballyliffin (36 holes, hosted the Irish Open in 2018), Donegal Golf Club (known as Murvagh to locals; redesigned by Pat Ruddy), beautiful Portsalon, recently reinvigorated Narin & Portnoo (Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner did wonders) and the underground cult favorite, Cruit Island Golf Club, one of the world’s finest and friendliest nine-hole courses. The Rosapenna resort has a splendid dining room (The Vardon, great views and local fish), but within walking distance in the surrounding village of Downings (pop. 450) are two classic favorites of Donegal – Fisk, a 16-seat seafood restaurant that is chef owned, with a beloved bar next door, and The Olde Glen Bar and Restaurant, a Michelin-recommended spot that Chef Ciaran Sweeney has turned into what may be Donegal’s finest restaurant. But back to the golf. Doak’s crew had done some shaping on the delightful Old Tom’s new nine a few years ago, so the architect was well aware of the 300-acre tract nearby that the Casey family had always envisioned as the perfect setting for a third tourist-grabbing course. At one time, the St. Patrick’s property had two modest links that Jack Nicklaus briefly showed some interest in reinvigorating, but when Doak studied the terrain he told the Caseys it should rightfully only contain one sprawling exceptional course. And the Caseys agreed. “Several architects have walked the Tom Doak's challenging greens are part of the fun at St. Patrick's Links. land with us,” said Casey, who plays off a 5-handicap. “but we always felt Tom was away as many hotel guests as they’ve ac- shop, a spartan pine cabin of sorts, by herour best opportunity. LEVIN, Scotland – For a golf-mad country which goes by the lofty and rightful title “home of golf,” where the great game was first played more than 600 years ago by noblemen and military officers, it’s hard to believe a new course would be getting plenty of notice. But for Scotland, particularly the St. Andrews area which is the spiritual home of golf with plenty of green grass outlets, that’s the case with the brand new Dumbarnie Links in the tiny village of Levin and the newly renovated Dundonald links near Troon. To be sure, The Old Course at St. Andrews, where the game was first played over 18 holes, is still as grand as ever, the site of the 150th Open Championship (never the British Open here), still attracts golfers from all over the world. But the newest St. Andrews area courses will make sure the public golf mecca will never go out of style and will remain attractive to golfers eager for a walking pilgrimage in sometimes dodgy (local term for wet/ cool) weather for many decades to come. “This was land which sat here for 300 years waiting to be discovered for golf,”

on plenty of the holes. Pairing with it is a large group of traditional caddies, many in the 40-60-year-old age range, who know every break of the old course, and most importantly the new layout, which has made it the site of both the men and the women’s Scottish Open. The final piece of the Dundonald puzzle is a large two-story clubhouse and luxury cabins which line the 10th fairway. Less than 15 minutes away is the Royal Troon Golf Club, site of the 2024 Open Championship. Texan Justin Leonard once won the Open here among other greats, but showcases another enduring feature of Scottish golf. Royal Troon is and will be open for public play right up into the Open this year in mid-July. In fact, there is almost no course in Scotland which does not welcome American golfers at any time. Try that at 2023 U.S. Open site Los Angeles Country Club, Augusta National for the Masters or dozens of other top American courses and you won’t even make it past the front gate, but all are welcome at Troon and other Open venues. Start your Troon experience with a traditional lunch in the stately clubhouse surrounded by club trophies from 100 years and watched over by large oil paintings of club secretaries from another era. Then go outside to gauge the wind by viewing the flags on a towering pole. It’s possible to drive the first couple of greens if the wind is strong, but woe to the golfer who expects to make up ground after making the turn for the back nine and now facing the prevailing wind. Royal Troon, established in 1878, also has one of the most famous single holes in golf, Scotland or elsewhere. The par-3, No. 8 hole is known as the Postage Stamp for its tiny green which slopes off in all directions and plays 123 yards from the back tees. It’s the shortest hole regularly used in major championship golf, once aced by golf legend Gene Sarazen. The area certainly has an embarrassment of link golf riches with nearby Prestwick, the site of the first Open Championship, and Western Gales, a fine layout by the Scottish railroad track. But if you need a break or just longing for a hidden gem, you certainly should stumble upon the nearby Barassie Links, opened in 1887 and hidden in plain sight by the better known and more famous layouts. Looking back from the 13th green at sunset at Dumbarnie Links. The par-72 layout, 6,863 yards from the back tees, is all the challenge you want and you can see the other courses from your fairway, enjoying the same scenery and challenge, at much less cost. Further south is the famed Turnberry Ailsa Golf Links and the massive Trump Turnberry hotel. The par-72 links where Tom Watson won the epic Duel in the Sun with Jack Nicklaus and all the greats have played, is currently out of the Open Rota due to a certain former U.S. President as its owner, but certainly doesn’t dim the greatness of the course. The best view, and even a few hotel rooms, are in the famed Lighthouse overlooking the ocean and the Ailsa Craig rock formation. The bottom floor is a food-anddrink filled halfway house with some of the best views in golf. The top floors are hotel rooms. A trip to visit or stay at sunset is well worth taking. The Pinehurst vibe comes from the Arkansas pines lining every fairway. As for the connection to that famous club in Georgia? That would definitely be the par-3 12th, with a carry over water to a similarly bunkered green. Water is definitely in play on the first four holes (a creek or pond is also present on another eight holes), and green side bunkers are large and plentiful. “There are some place here where if you miss it on the wrong side, it’s not about getting up and down, it’s where can I chip it and have it stay on the green,” Lack said. “You have to be very patient playing here and take what it gives you. It’s not about just hitting a green, it’s where you hit the green. Back to Alabama FOR SOME ROBERT TRENT JONES TRAIL MIX by tom bedell
I
’ve been lucky enough to visit Alabama numerous times and play on many of the courses on the state’s Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. But not all of them, yet. That may require a few more visits. Or one really long one. Takes some time to play 468 holes. I last wrote about the Trail here in the 2018 Directory and Travel issue, and it’s worth rerunning one sentence from that piece: All the works of the Pharaohs of Egypt had nothing on the early years of the Trail, when there was a construction crew of over 700 building 18 golf courses at seven very different locations all at the same time. The Trail, opened in 1992, has now crossed the three-decade mark, with 26 courses at 11 locations running the length and breadth of the state. It remains the perhaps unsurpassable model for other such trails other states have tried to adopt, with lesser degrees of success. It also remains a boon to traveling golfers looking for great golf at bargain prices. Along with a few other traveling golf writers, I revisited the state this past fall to have another go at some Trail courses and
crimination at other U.S. clubs. But in Alabama, the Championship was on the verge of being moved from Shoal Creek when Thompson relented at the last minute and admitted a Black member. Dr. David Bronner, the head of the Retirement Systems of Alabama, said in a 2013 interview, “We started looking at doing the Trail… around the time Shoal Creek was giving us bad publicity across the world. That’s the reason I built it…. I wanted to give the people of Alabama something to be proud THE QUICK SKINNY Like other southern states, Alabama has of… [and] to promote tourism to the state … and recruit industry.” a less than sparkling racial history, The Trail has done both in taken note of in five stops along rather spectacular ways, contribanother worthwhile path within uting to a $24 billion travel indusits borders, the U.S. Civil Rights try (from $1.8 billion in 1992), Trail (https://civilrightstrail.com/ which in turn convinced compastate/alabama). Interestingly, it nies like Mercedes and Hyundai was a golf-related racial incident to establish production plants that ignited the idea for the Jones Trail, prior to the 1990 PGA Dr. David Bronner in the state. Still, the sheer audacity of the Trail construction plan at its Championship. The tournament was set to be played at inception struck some as crazy. The course the Shoal Creek Golf and Country Club in design firms of both Nicklaus and Palmer Birmingham (as it had been in 1984) when turned down overtures. We started in Birmingham and meandered in a southerly circle over to Auburn, piling up birdies, bogeys and others, while stuffing ourselves with barbecue and other local delicacies, and reminding ourselves of some of the mind-boggling statistics and history about the Trail.

Rulewich, now retired himself from his own firm, concedes he’ll probably be best known for his work with Jones, and that’s fine with him. He thinks the Trail is probably his greatest accomplishment. And he still looks back on those early days in wonder: “It was unbelievable. It was incredible. For several years I spent half my life down there, and it was probably the most exciting time of my life.” GOLF ON THE GRAND SCALE The excitement is now for visitors to enjoy. No RTJ Golf Trail site is more than two hours removed from another, and with so many routings in the varied terrains of the state there is bound to be something unique wherever one winds up teeing off, from the northern highlands to the southern coast. The Trail courses are generally characterized by broad fairways and huge greens, but plenty of trouble can await the unwary. The courses aren’t easy, though some have been softened over the years. Such was the case with our first round, at one of the original sites of the Trail, the Valley Course at Oxmoor Valley, renovated in 2021, with some approaches opened up and greens resurfaced from Dwarf Bermuda to TifEagle Ultradwarf. There are always a plenitude of tees at

Trail courses, so a judicious choice should make rounds the pleasures they’re meant to be. The Valley Course’s 6,034-yard white tees are still a hearty 130 slope, so my foursome opted to move up to the 5,297-yard gold tees — a 124 slope. It worked out well for Barry Cronin, whose ball we thought we’d lost on the par3 fourth hole, characterized by a mounded green running down behind to a creek. But the only reason we thought we’d lost Barry’s ball was because it was in the hole. An auspicious beginning. Most of the Trail sites were originally built with a full-scale par-3 short course also available, and such was the case at Oxmoor Valley. But here, too, change has come. What was once a 147-acre tough and hilly 18-hole par-3 course has been completely revamped into a 14-acre, nine-hole very short course (911 yards from the “tips”) called The Back Yard. The emphasis is less on challenge and more on conviviality and fun, but it will give your short irons a workout. So it went for four more days and four more Trail courses, all standouts, all in great condition. The Ross Bridge Resort Course near Birmingham, in particular, was actually brand-spanking new, thanks to a previous maintenance mix-up that had managed to
kill off all the greens. A total renovation was undertaken of both greens and bunkers and other softening touches here as well. The new look was unveiled in midOctober and quite a look it is, to my mind the most dramatic of the full hand of Trail courses we played. It’s also said to be the fifth-longest golf course in the world for those insane players who might want to try it from the back tees, a mere 8,168 yards. On toward the state capitol of Montgomery, the tricameral of courses at Capitol Hill in Prattville are the Legislator, Senator and Judge. We played the latter two, the Senator a treeless links-style course with thick grassy rough in place of gorse, all wide-open to the wind, of which there seemed to be plenty. High mounted greens tended to reject any short shots; general advice is to take an extra club. Running along the Alabama River backwaters the Judge course is a visual stunner, with some thought-provoking elevated tees right from the get-go, and a big marble slab proclaiming, “PREPARE TO BE JUDGED.” There’s plenty of water here, too, and an island par-3 at the sixth. Overall it deemed me guilty of poor putting. We wrapped up our Trail courses on The Links at Grand National, a grand 54-hole site if

hip Purser was laughing when he said no one had been “stupid enough” to try all 18 holes from the back tees yet. Not even him. It meant one of two things – first, Ross Bridge’s Director of Golf with whom I’d complete the ordeal, had a sense of humor so this might actually turn out to be a fun round, or, more likely, slogging our way over 8,000-plus yards of golf course might not turn out to be any fun at all. Ross Bridge had opened, and been added to the Yellowhammer State’s famous Robert Trent Jones Trail, in 2005, a few months before my visit. Designed not by Jones, who died five years prior to its opening, the course, like plenty of others credited to his boss, was laid out by Jones’ longtime employee and right-hand-man, Roger Rulewich. Rulewich, a Yale graduate who was actually more involved than Jones himself in the planning, construction, and completion of the Trail’s original 378 holes, (and many of the subsequent 72 – the Trail’s total now stands at 450), had left Jones’ firm in 1995 to set up his own and subsequently joined forces with young architect David Fleury. At Ross Bridge, though, Rulewich would work alongside Bobby Vaughan whose job it had been back in the late 1980s to identify appropriate sites for the cross-state network of courses, hire all the experts and extras necessary to build them, and manage every detail. Rulewich and Vaughan had 330 acres of rolling, mostly forested, land with a high ridge on its eastern boundary to play with and used it to sculpt a big-boned behemoth. The large-scale greens, water features, bunkers, and slopes were significantly grander than any I’d seen before. It was bold, brash, beautiful, but also a little overwhelming. And that scorecard! There were five other, eminently more sensible, sets of tees but the British publication I was working for had no interest in them as the editor wanted something grisly and disturbing about what it was like to play one of the longest golf courses in the world. It wasn’t cold, but neither was it warm – quarter-zip weather, or rather an early 2000s polo-neck and pullover. With a little wind in our faces, the level then downhill then uphill, 620-yard 1st played like a par-6 or par-7 and, though I picked the same ball out of the hole as the one I’d started with, it was scant consolation considering how many shots W W W.GOLFOKL AHOMA.ORG
there had been in between. This wasn’t the persimmon and balataera, but Callaway’s Great Big Bertha II had ‘only’ reached 380cc by then. I didn’t have one, though. I loved my 260cc Titleist 975D, but it still made hard work of Ross Bridge. The 230-yard drives just weren’t cutting it and it wasn’t long before the driver/3-wood par-4s and 5-wood/long-iron par-3s began to wear on me. By the time we reached the turn, most, if not all, the smiles and joviality had disappeared. Chip and I were enjoying each other’s company sure enough, but I already knew this would be my first and last time. Chip was clearly struggling to see the fun part. Still Ross Bridge’s Director of Golf, Purser says the course now hosts two very popular events from the tips every year – a two-man scramble in the spring and a Better-Ball at the end of summer. “I’d say only 20 percent of the players think they can win though,” he adds. “The rest play to say they did it.” Doing it 17 years ago wasn’t some heroic, special-ops challenge, of course. I was just playing a bit more golf than usual. But, even
The clubhouse overlooks the 469-yard par-4 fifth hole, one of the shorter par-4s at Ross Bridge. in a cart, it was disagreeable. Fun at times certainly, but mostly unpleasant. Following the round, Purser and I drove into Hoover to find nourishment. When the first serving of boneless wings arrived, we smiled across the table and, almost simultaneously said, “Never again!” I was back at Ross Bridge a few weeks ago. The course was just as big and beautiful as I remember it, but sadly, Chip wasn’t about. I wonder if there might have been any temptation to do it all again had our paths crossed. Hahahaha, you’re joking right?
