Letter from the Editor Ken MacLeod Unlike our northeastern brethren who escape months of cold and snow in Florida, here in Oklahoma the winters are usually mild enough to keep the sticks handy. We are free agents when it comes to golf travel.

While thousands head west to the desert in the winter, an equal number save up for a summer reprieve from the heat by going to Colorado and New Mexico or the gulf havens in Texas, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. There are terrific drive options as close as Branson or Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri or at Hot Springs Village or Bella Vista in Arkansas.

This year we profile a variety of the western options for winter golf travel, including our cover story on Desert Mountain, a popular haven for many Oklahomans featuring six Jack Nicklaus courses. Veteran Arizona golf expert Bill Huffman pens that piece as well as a story on golf in Mesquite, Nevada, an emerging golf destination known for the stunning beauty of its courses.

For comparison’s sake, long-time Golf Oklahoma contributor Dave Holland takes a look at some of the options in Las Vegas, where your course may depend on how you fared at the tables the night before.

Another frequent contributor to Golf Oklahoma, travel writer Steve Habel takes a look at an area that suddenly has some amazing courses to offer and that is the Texas gulf coast. Check out the pictures of Moody Gardens and Newport Dunes.

Tulsa-based writer Bill Harper lets us in on some recent travels of his to Louisiana and Arkansas. We also have an update on one of the classic U.S. travel destinations in Myrtle Beach.

Here at home, we’re looking forward to a great year of golf in the state. The Oklahoma Golf Association State Amateur Championship is July 22-24 at Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club, the venerable Perry Maxwell layout that celebrated its centennial in 2012.

The OGA is introducing a new championship in 2013, a Junior Girls Championship to run concurrently with its Junior Boys Championship June 3-6 at Kickingbird Golf Club in Edmond. The new OGA championship reflects that girls already participate in 13 or more OGA Junior Tour events.. This event will not replace or conflict with the 63rd annual Women’s Oklahoma Golf Association Junior Championship scheduled July 9-10 at Meadowbrook Country Club.

Mark Felder, OGA executive director, said the girls will play 36 holes of stroke play with the top 16 advancing to match play.

There will be one age bracket.

“We’ve always had a lot of questions as to why the girls weren’t in our state championship when they’re playing in all the other junior events,” Felder said. “This just gives them one more good tournament to compete in here at home.”

Lots of new toys in 2013 A deluge of new clubs hit market by ed travis

Titleist’s anticipated 913 line.

Wintertime may not be ideal for playing a round of golf however cold and snow can’t stop us from taking a look at the new equipment for the 2013 season. Some of these items were announced as far back as last fall and just now are showing up in local golf shops.

Of course the PGA Merchandise Show at the end of January is the place and the time for every manufacturer to roll out their latest and greatest but this preview will give you advanced knowledge of what’s on tap. Finally, before we get a lot of emails pointing out that we missed a new club from a particular manufacturer, there were two criteria for

making this preview. First the new product had to be of some significance in the marketplace (major maker, new/exciting technology, etc.) and second we needed to have enough information to pass on to you more than speculation.

Our goal as always is to give you information to help guide your golf equipment purchasing decisions.

Acushnet Golf Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x golf balls – Titleist brings out new Pro V1s every two years and for 2013-2014 the new versions of the world’s number one selling ball have improvements to both distance and spin rates. Pricing remains the same but there is a new design to the directional side stamp.

Titleist 913 drivers and fairways – The new 913 models are updates of the successful line of 910 metalwoods. Drivers are available in the D2 (460cc full pear-shaped head) and D3 (445cc classic pearshape). Both have Titleist’s adjustable hosel and a $399 price.

Cobra Golf The new AMP Cell line of drivers features regular, offset and Pro models with what the company calls “MyFly” technology which allows six different loft and trajectory settings. They will come in

a choice of four colors – silver, red, orange and blue. The AMP Cell makes use of their SmartPad Technology, meaning no matter what the loft setting the clubface will be square and not require an adjustment as do some other drivers.

Nike Golf The VR_S Covert driver from Nike the company says is the world’s first High Speed Cavity Back driver that complies with USGA and R&A rules. The cavity is hidden at address, thus may be called covert and allows weight to be moved towards the perimeter for higher moment of inertia. It also features FlexLoft dual-axis adjustment with a pull, turn and push/tighten mechanism and three face settings plus five for loft. The VR_S Covert Tour driver street price is $399 and the VR_S Covert regular is $299.

VR_S Covert fairways and hybrids also have the hidden cavity back sole with a stainless steel face.

TaylorMade Golf The new R1 driver ($399) has its job cut out for it on the heels of the immense success of the R11 and R11s but with the addition of a greater range of adjustability TaylorMade believes it’s just the club to do it. R1 has 12 loft-sleeve settings and 7 face-angle positions plus two movable shot-shape weights and it allows loft and face angle to be adjusted independently. There are 168 possible combinations available with the three adjustments technologies – more than enough to fit any golfer.

RocketBallz Stage 2 family is the year two version of lat year’s RocketBallz models. The driver features a lower and more forward CG, a more aerodynamic head shape and larger clubface and TMaG

says it produces nine more yards for better players compared to the first generation RBZ driver. It also has loft adjustments using TMaG’s Loft-Sleeve technology.

The RBZ Stage 2 fairways has been updated for 10-yards additional distance compared to last year’s model. RBZ S2 Driver Regular model Street price $299 – Tour Model Driver Street price $349 RocketBladez irons in regular and Tour models are the first irons to have a slot behind the clubface similar to that found the in wildly popular RocketBallz fairways. tions in order to play a round of golf; having a wife threaten divorce over golf; wondering – on the 14th hole – if she’s serious; leaving the clubs in the car trunk all year; playing in the snow. Evidence, particularly during winter months, includes carpet putting devices, a few discolored divots in the ceiling from overzealous practice swings, stacks of brochures from Scottsdale.

I don’t have the problem, myself. True, I do have a carpet putting device, but it’s there all year round, not just in the winter. I do chip wiffle balls from the living room into the kitchen, but that’s just to give my cats exercise chasing them. I did play in a tournament one year on my wedding anniversary.

But I can walk away from golf whenever I want. I’ve quit a number of times.

Golf Addiction

Is it a laughing matter? by tom bedell (This is a true story from a few years back, before Keegan Bradley became as well-known as he is now, though even then his dad, Mark, was saying Keegan was a player to watch. That turned out to be true, too. I’ve only taken liberties here with the names of the doctors involved.)

We started with what may have been the first golf joke ever, a classic of the canon: Pete returned from his Sunday round later than usual, looking haggard. “Bad day at the course?” his wife asked.

“Everything was going fine,” he said, “then Harry had a heart attack and died on the 10th tee.”

“Oh, that’s awful!”

“You’re not kidding. From then on it was – hit the ball, drag Harry, hit the ball, drag 14 •••••• www.golfoklahoma.org

Harry.”

“I see,” said Dr. A, a clinical psychologist.

(We’ll call him Ernie.) Actually, we couldn’t see so well, since we were fog-bound in the hills, trying desperately to make out the fairway on the first hole of the course we were playing.

We were there on a mission to discover the nature of golf addiction. The premise was simple. The given was that there is such a thing as golf addiction. The simple self-diagnostic test is finding the well-known anecdote about Jack Nicklaus playing golf on his honeymoon while his wife waited in the car – amusing, but not unreasonable.

Naturally, there are other signs: blowing off birthdays, holidays or other social func-

“Honey, I’m sorry, it will never happen again, but after I finished I came out in the parking lot and this beautiful young woman had a flat tire, and she asked me for help. Her spare was flat, too, so I told her to have a mechanic come fix it, and I offered to drive her home. It will never happen again, Honey, honest, but when I drove her home she asked me in for a drink, and I figured one couldn’t hurt. Well, one drink led to two, I promise it will never happen again, but before I knew we were dancing in her living room. Dancing led to kissing, and soon we were making mad passionate love, but I swear it will never happen again.”

“You lying bastard – you played 36 holes, didn’t you?”

I was astounded when I first spoke to Ernie. He said, “I have this old house, and I get preoccupied with home-repair stuff. So my wife urges me to play golf as a way of getting over my obsession with home improvement.”

I said, “We’re obviously living our lives in complete reverse.”

My plan was to assemble a group of psychologists and/or psychiatrists to analyze the nature of golf obsession through the common language shared by the victims – golf jokes. And there was only one logical testing ground – a golf course.

“Please stop checking your watch constantly, caddie, it’s very distracting.”

“This isn’t a watch, sir, it’s a compass.”

Finding such golf-playing professionals wasn’t easy, but I eventually tracked down Ernie and Dr. B, a clinical psychologist we’ll call Bert. Both were willing to devote 18

holes to research, though we had to do it on different mornings. That meant more golf for me, but I was able to deal with that. But the jokes were the same, one per hole, some of them too indecent to reprint here.

Ernie said, “My take is that there are two main factors. One is that there’s an extreme hopefulness about golf, that the next shot will always be better, and the results are immediately obvious – except when you’re in fog like this. The other point is that golf is an individual responsibility. It’s only yours to win or lose, to play badly or wonderfully.”

Fred was 20-over-par shortly after the round began. He’d sent buckets of balls in the water, spent an inordinate amount of time at the beach, could have used a machete for all his jungle work in the deep rough. But when his caddie coughed, and Fred missed a 12-inch putt, he blew his stack: “You must be the worst caddie in the world!”

“I doubt it,” replied the caddie. “That would be too much of a coincidence.”

“There’s hope on every shot,” Ernie said, “because there’s the illusion that you can actually find perfection.”

“Even in the face of empirical evidence to the contrary?”

“No matter how hopeless the last one was, yes. And that’s pretty much what [behavioral psychologist] B.F. Skinner said about gambling. It’s all based on a variable ratio schedule of reinforcement, just like golf. You never know what’s going to happen next, but you have this kind of hopefulness because it’s worked in the past.”

“And there is a kind of jackpot when you hit a good shot.”

“Absolutely. And the thing is, a variable ratio schedule of reinforcement is the most difficult to extinguish. It engenders hope, the thought that ‘I can do it, I can do it,’ just like gambling. So, as the first joke shows, all the ancillary things attached to golf – companionship, exercise – are secondary to that hope for the perfect shot.”

As they step up to the first tee Bill says to Ralph, “Hey, guess what, I got a set of golf clubs for my wife.”

Ralph says, “Wow, what a great trade!”

I bought the theory, because I couldn’t expect worse. My round began as an abomination and never much improved. Ernie played the front nine in 48, a bad round for him. A golfer since he was 10, he won a couple of state championships and one regional championship in the mid-‘60s. Now he struggles, he says, to keep a 10-handicap. But he went into the back nine murmuring the mantra

«ever hopeful,» and proceeded to rip off a string of three pars and two birdies en route to a 2-over-par 38.

“Now I want to go out and play nine more, you see? That’s what happens – you finish with three pars in the last six holes and you say, ‘Oh my God, this is it! I’m now capable of paring every other hole – it’s clear!’”

Professional Mark Bradley, who claimed he was mostly addicted to cigars, recognized the symptoms: “You fail so often at this game. I ask people when they come off the course how they did and 90 percent of them say they did terribly. About 10 percent say they did pretty well. No one ever says they played great. And because it’s so challenging, and because you hate to fail, you keep going back for more. And invariably what happens is that you beat it all day long, and then you hit that good shot on 18, and you say, ‘Oh yeah, that was it.’ That will bring you back. I’ve seen it many times, not only with other people, but with myself. So how did you do?”

I said, “The best two balls I hit all day was when I came out of the bunker and stepped on a rake.”

“My theory,” said Bert, “is that golf is a 21st century sublimation of primitive hunt-

ing instincts. If we look at primitive societies or tribes – the hunting-gathering societies – there are distinct separations between the genders. The males live together in huts and they go off on hunts together and they just come back and procreate and have the women prepare food for them. And I think that’s what a lot of these golf jokes have in common – that women have no place on the golf course.”

The golfer’s wife was in full flight: “If you ever spent a Sunday with me instead of playing golf I swear I would drop dead.”

The husband replied, “There’s no point in trying to bribe me.”

Bert and I appeared to be pretty evenly matched in our level of ardent but inconsistent play. He said he had never even hit a golf ball until he was 40, and his feelings about the game developed on the spot: “I always thought golf was the most boring game in the world; it never occurred to me to have any interest in it. So I went up to the first tee, hit the ball and felt this rush. It was clearly not any kind of learned behavior, but a purely physiological reaction.

“I think it was a release of endorphins in the brain. I suspect it again goes back to evo-

lution. Males evolved so that they would be really motivated to hit a target with a projectile, whether with a spear, rock, stone, arrow, whatever. The guys who were more motivated to practice that and do it all the time would be more successful hunters and would be more likely to have mates, to survive, and so the act of successfully throwing the rock or stick was exhilarating, and pumped the endorphins. We’re the survivors, still thinking, Wow, I can aim at a target in the distance and hit it and it feels great.”

If we don’t really need to hunt anymore, are we just getting away with something, being on the golf course in the first place?

Bert rejected the thought. “That’s only a predicament if you look at golf as a nonconstructive activity. I prefer to look at this as something that’s life-enhancing and improves my marriage. It keeps me happier and healthier and keeps me away from my wife so I have less time to irritate her.”

“Does she buy this?”

“Sometimes.”

“You fool, you almost hit my wife with that shot!”

“Sorry, old chap. Here, take a shot at mine.”

There is, Bert hastened to point out, a problem-solving side to golf, the infinitesimally small differences in the height of the ball, the angle of the lie, the slope of the green – geometry, trajectories, distances all appealing to the male mathematical sense.

“So there’s a cerebral rush, too. The male’s brain is just wired for golf.”

Such an inevitable thought was comforting, especially with the end of the season beckoning. It made it easier to look beyond the cold months to come, and to remain ever hopeful.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – With six signature Jack Nicklaus golf courses, there is nothing in the Southwest quite like Desert Mountain Golf Club. The vision of well-known Scottsdale developer Lyle Anderson and essentially the creation of the greatest player in the game, Nicklaus, Desert Mountain is the luxurious home now owned by its 2,100-plus members, who bought the club in 2010 and went on to celebrate its 25th anniversary in the past year.

“Desert Mountain people are great people. They love golf,” Nicklaus said during a press conference to announce the Charles Schwab Cup, a return to the Champions Tour after the club had hosted The Tradition from 1989-2001.

“That’s why they’re all here. Six courses... is a golfing mecca.”

A golf park, or “mecca,” is just what Anderson imagined when he hiked the 8,000acre property in the mid-1980s, shortly after he and Nicklaus had teamed up to build nearby Desert Highlands Golf Club, the pioneer of desert golf – or as it was better known, target golf. The Renegade Course at Desert Mountain opened in 1987, as one by one the Cochise, Geronimo, Apache, Chiricahua and Outlaw layouts were added to the club’s portfolio.

Desert Mountain turned out so well that Nicklaus built similar high-end projects for Anderson at Las Campanas Golf Club in Santa Fe, N.M., Superstition Mountain Golf Club in Gold Canyon, Ariz., and the Club at

All were world-class, but none exceeded or even equaled what golf’s dynamic desert duo had built at Desert Mountain.

“Desert Mountain has been one of the highlights of my career as a golf-course designer,’’ said the Golden Bear. “I believe it will always be recognized as one of the greatest golf clubs in the world.”

Oklahomans would seem to agree. There are nearly 40 Oklahoma members hailing from Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Tahlequah, Owasso, Woodward, Claremore, Broken Arrow, Edmond, Park Hill and Cherokee.

General Manager Bob Jones said interest remains high.

THE COURSES When Renegade debuted, it rocked the Arizona golf scene with a split personality never before seen in the High Sonoran Desert. With five or six tee boxes on 16 holes and two flags on every green, the Bear gave golfers several routes over these fabulous fairways and gorgeous green settings. Scratch players often went gold tees to golf flags, while those with higher handicaps took the easier and appropriately named whiteto-white paths. From the forward tees of 5,136 yards it could play like a lamb, but a lion when all the way back at 7,443 yards.

Renegade is consistently named among Arizona’s top courses by Golf Digest, with

its signature par-3 fourth hole coming early in the round – a testy, 230-yard shot over water to a green framed by a stone wall set against a mountain backdrop.

A year later, Nicklaus added the Cochise Course, at a little over 7,000 yards perhaps the friendliest of his half-dozen offerings.

With incredible variety and amazing 360-degree views, Cochise became the original site of The Tradition, one of five major championships on the Champions Tour. More recently it hosted the Schwab Cup. The Geronimo Course originally was the choice to host the Over the Hill Gang, but when it came in late, and much more difficult to navigate both for players and fans, Cochise www.golfoklahoma.org •••••• 21

At the Geronimo Course, staying on the straight and narrow is imperative for survival. became the perfect fit. It features five par-3s and five par-5s, with its claim to fame being a unique double-island green shared by the par-3 seventh hole and the par-5 15th. That Nicklaus won a record four Tradition titles on Cochise led to its nickname, “The House That Jack Built.”

In 1989, Geronimo finally opened at 7,420 yards. Nicklaus called it a “strong-looking course,” and it fact Geronimo means “stronghold” in Apache. With constant shifts in elevation and challenging shots over deep ravines and semi-blind plateaus, Geronimo demands every shot in the bag. No exam is more exacting than the final one, as Geronimo ends at the par-3 18th hole. It is an unusual conclusion that calls for a 200-yard-plus shot to essentially an island green surrounded by a deep ravine and solid rock.

It took five more years, but Apache brought a fresh, new look to then-foursome of courses at Desert Mountain. Winding gracefully through the high-desert terrain, some diversity was added with a Scottish flair that was a bit more wide-open and 22 •••••• www.golfoklahoma.org

links-like than its predecessors. The front nine plays down the hill and then straight back up, which makes for a somewhat easy beginning. The back nine is more rambling, with lots of elevation changes. Big greens that seem to be extensions of the fairways make for a relaxed round, however, while the 18th packs a bit of a surprise with two distinct greens.

Five years later, in 1999, Chiricahua arrived. Many call it Nicklaus’ “crown jewel of the Mountain,” and it does sit on the property’s highest point at about 3,300 feet above sea level. A roller coaster ride in every sense, Chiricahau has the most guest play because of its stellar views of the Valley of the Sun. It also boasts the most expansive fairways, meaning it’s the perfect host for first-timers.

Last but certainly not least is Outlaw, which opened in 2003 on a terrific tract of land next to the Tonto National Forest. Also a Scottish links-styled course in nature, it is blessed with generous landing areas and a lack of forced carries, meaning it’s still tough but not over the top. Outlaw also is the

ideal location to take in such Arizona landmarks as Pinnacle Peak, Four Peaks and the majestic McDowell Mountains.

OTHER AMENITIES Another factor that makes Desert Mountain unique is its six distinct clubhouses and restaurants. Those, and its high-tech performance center.

As it turns out, the Renegade Course is the site of one of the clubhouses as well as the performance center. The clubhouse is the most contemporary, with its cozy Hideout restaurant being the perfect spot for breakfast or a cocktail at sunset. The performance center, a $1.6 million facility, comes equipped with 3-D motion capabilities that include Doppler radar and four-camera video-motion analysis to help players of all skill levels.

The Geronimo-Cochise Course clubhouse is the most highly decorated of the six offerings, and at 52,000 square feet the largest. Players on the Champions Tour voted it the best in golf each year when they played

The Tradition there, and there is nowhere better to enjoy fabulous food and drink than its glass-walled dining rooms and lounge.

The same could be said of the Southwestern-styled Apache clubhouse, the Old World, Italian-themed Chiricahua clubhouse with its highly regarded Constantino’s restaurant, and the Outlaw clubhouse and its authentic early-1900s ranch house-like look, where golfers are greeted by the colors and décor of Old Mexico with food and drink from the Arizona Grill to match.

Members also have the option of the Sonoran Spa clubhouse, where the 25,000-square-foot fitness center includes a

Putting on the glitz Options abound in Las Vegas by david r. holland

Nothing says desert golf like waterfalls and peninsula greens, here at the Wynn Golf and Country Club. Hey, it’s Las Vegas.

LAS VEGAS -- It runs like an old blackand-white movie in my mind. It was 1955.

Waves of mirage heat rolled over the asphalt, and a ribbon of hotels, casinos and neon appeared.

It was the Las Vegas Strip.

My brothers and I pressed our faces to the casino windows -- cupped hands, shielding the pulsar-bright summer sunshine. Kids weren’t allowed inside, and it was a mystery unsolved until adulthood.

Today The Strip is full-color, an upgraded glitz of neon — more like Xbox 360, not the unpolished 16 mm film I first saw from a 1955 turquoise Buick Roadmaster.

Today, you don’t have to visit for Texas hold ’em. You can play golf.

Almost on a daily basis things happen in a flash: a celebrity sighting, sharing an elevator ride with Dr. J or spotting a professional golfer being tutored by Butch Harmon at Rio Secco Golf Club. Could that be Natalie Gulbis?

Down the eighth fairway two recognizable specks appear and golfers having lunch stop, exit their tables, take their drinks out to the patio and observe golf teaching leg-

end Butch Harmon with a world-ranked golfer named Phil Mickelson. From the patio deck of Janelas Restaurant these celebrity watchers can see the seventh, eighth and ninth holes.

On the 566-yard par-5 Mickelson has hit a high cut into the wind about 300 yards past a corner bunker. He makes birdie.

“The crowd that gathered was awe-struck witnessing how far and how flush he hit the ball,” recalled Cascata head pro Charles Packard, formerly at Rio Secco. “It was impressive.”

Remarkable might also describe another gallery-like day at Rio Secco when Harmon’s former pupil, Tiger Woods, set the course record of 64 just a week before his wire-to-wire 15-stroke U.S. Open victory in 2000 at Pebble Beach. Tiger opened the day on the 10th, a 378-yard par-4, by holing his second shot from the fairway for an eagle.

Today in Las Vegas the Rat Pack and Elvis are far-flung memories, but this is surely a city that changes on a daily basis.

The weather in Las Vegas reminds me of West Texas. It can be perfect year around, but you never know when it will be too hot

or too windy or even sleeting. In the summer the desert heat bakes the irrigated golf courses and green fees get very affordable.

But it can be Christmas Day and 70 degrees with no wind.

Spoil yourself with $500 rounds at Cascata or Wynn Golf Club or you can pay a lot less for numerous scenic layouts.

Here are some selections you might consider:

Rio Secco Golf Club Rio Secco, home to the Butch Harmon School of Golf (ranked No. 1 on Golf Digest’s list of America’s 50 Greatest Teachers at one time), is an desirable start to a golf trip to Vegas, not only because it teams with Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino, but it’s the sister course to Cascata. Both are Rees Jones designs.

Play is fast and firm on this 7,332-yard par-72, with quick and undulating greens and six broad desert holes, six plateau holes, and six diving into a steep canyon. This landscape rolls across 240 acres of rocky scenery, perched 800 feet above the Las Vegas Valley.

Bali Hai Golf Club The vintage “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign is just a minute away on The Strip from Bali Hai Golf Club, which was built to recreate a tropical, Indonesian land of golf fun.

Designed by Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley in 2000, Bali Hai is a lush seven acres of water and palm trees. It totals 4,000 trees with 2,500 stands of towering palms and 100,000 tropical plants. Out-of-play areas are accented with Augusta white sand and black volcanic rock. The par-71 course measures 7,002 yards from the tips and opens up views of Mandalay Bay and the Luxor pyramid and other hotels on The Strip.

Bali Hai’s No. 16 is a a par-3 island green that frequently comes with an audience from the Cili Restaurant patio .The third hole is a 468 yard par-4 with a creek running the entire right-side. Some call this hole “Shipwreck.”

TPC at Las Vegas Bobby Weed and Raymond Floyd designed TPC at Las Vegas, formerly named TPC at The Canyons. This par-71, 7,063-yarder is an adventure. With a panorama of Red Rock Canyon, the course is brawny and tawny, and an Arizona-like desert golf course you will have to think your way around. It requires shots over canyons and rocky arroyos and has elevation changes.

No. 12, a 145-yard par-3, shoots to a canyon-mesa island green. It is followed by the 423-yard, par-4 13th, called “Death Valley.”

Wynn Golf Club, a Tom Fazio design, occupies the land that was once the storied Desert Inn Golf Club. When it operated from 1952 until 2002 every celebrity golfer walked these fairways: entertainers like Bing Crosby, Jackie Gleason, Bob Hope, Dinah Shore and the Rat Pack.

Wynn is compact in acreage – a par-70 course 7,042 yards in length with Tifway II Hybrid Bermuda grass on the fairways and tees and Pennlinks Bentgrass.

The old Desert Inn GC was flat, but the renovation included moving more than 800,000 cubic yards of earth to create the elevation changes and a rolling landscape, that adds 100,000 new shrubs to the 1,200 existing trees that were salvaged and relocated, some more than 50 years old and more than 60 feet tall.

MESQUITE, Nev. -- When it comes to value, variety and views, it’s hard to beat the small-town feel and world-class layouts that make up the golfing brand known as Golf Mesquite Nevada.

True, desert golf comes in many sizes, shapes and forms. For instance, what you experience in the high Sonoran Desert of Arizona isn’t exactly what you get in the Coachella Valley of Southern California.

It only takes until the second hole, a par-3 that drops about 100 feet from tee to green, to know you’re not in Scottsdale or Palm Springs any more.

Coyote Springs, which is about 20 minutes south of Mesquite, certainly has lots of that going for it. Built by Jack Nicklaus as the forerunner of PGA Village West (right before it went bust), Coyote Springs might be the Bear’s best desert tract, with mountains and lakes and a remoteness that comes from not a single house in sight. With white sand bunkers, beautiful bridges and backdrops galore, Coyote Springs feels more private than public.

The two Golf Mesquite courses that lie near St. George – at one point you cross over the state lines of Nevada, Arizona and Utah while traveling through the Virgin River Gorge – are equally as surreal. Coral Canyon, a Keith Foster design, looks like it belongs in Sedona, and Sand Hollow, which was built by architect John Fought, also is loaded with red rocks and shock factors.

The other three desert diamonds are back in Mesquite, with Falcon Ridge, the Canyons and the Palmer Course combining for a good imitation of Six Flags over Nevada. You might even remember the Palmer Course from TV, as it’s the former site of the Golf Channel’s “Big Break Mesquite.’’

A new Gulf getaway Courses in Galveston, Port Aransas and South Padre give Texas a surprising destination worthy of consideration by steve habel There is something about the beach – maybe it’s the ocean or the sand or just the laid-back lifestyle – that beckons to us like the Siren’s call.

And with a pair of Texas coastal communities just a quick trip away, nothing beats the grasp of winter’s chill like walking barefoot in the sand while your neighbor is at home shoveling snow or wearing three layers of clothing.

It’s a simple proposition, especially when such a desirable destination – the Texas Gulf Coast – is so easy to get to and features a handful of golf courses that are both challenging and fun. Added to the appeal is that the après golf offerings include trips to the beach, boating, fishing, birding and just about anything you can think of to do in a pair of shorts and flip flops.

To those means, we have gathered here a short primer for the best golf in three Texas coastal locales, moving from the closest to Oklahoma to the closest to Mexico.

We start our look at Texas Gulf Coast courses in Galveston.

Transformation of Moody Gardens GC has had its tests Those who live and like to visit Galveston Island, about a 45-minute drive south of Houston, understand what it’s like to be a survivor.

The spectacular golf course here, Moody Gardens Golf Course, is a prime example of that tenet; it survived after Hurricane Ike nearly wiped the island off the face of the map in 2008 and has since enjoyed continual recognition as one of the best coastal courses anywhere.

When Ike hit, Moody Gardens Golf Course had been open for less than three months after a two-year, $17 million renovation by Jacobsen Hardy Golf Course Design (the firm of PGA Tour professionals Peter Jacobsen and Jim Hardy).

Part of the renovation replaced the old course’s Bermuda grasses with seashore paspalum, and that may have been the saving grace for the course when the hurricane took its toll. Paspalum is saltwater tolerant, but not necessarily saltwater proof. It performed beyond expectations.

The old course’s fairways were prone to flooding and saltwater damage, so the architects elevated the course two to five feet in places to improve its ability to slough off water.

Jacobsen and Hardy created a design that keeps the best historical features of the former layout while significantly improving certain holes and overall course flow. Now the track’s fairways curl around inlets and lakes edged with wispy grasses and there are even small elevation changes, rare on a site so close to sea level.

Playing at 6,816 yards from the back set of five tees and to a par of 72, Moody Gardens GC is designed to be player-friendly and challenging at the same time, putting a premium on approach shots and pin locations. The course is rated at 72.6 and is sloped at 127

The front-nine at Moody Gardens GC features three par-3s, three par-4s and three par-5s. The round opens with a short par-5 (512 yards) that plays into the wind, peaks with the 570-yard par-5 fifth and sustains your attention with the 232-yard par-3 sixth and the round-the-turn and back-into-the-wind 584-yard par-5 seventh. Hit an extra club to the green at the 162-yard uphill par-3 ninth, which also plays into the wind.

The back-nine at Moody Gardens asks for more precision off the tee, especially the 575-yard par-5 14th, which turns from right to left and narrows in the landing area, and the 341-yard par-4 15th,

which seems easy until you factor in the bunker short and right of the green and all the danger on the right side. No. 18 requires a tee shot out of a chute of palm trees to a wide fairway and then turns hard left to an uphill, into-the-wind approach over water and a waste area – a heck of a way to finish.

Moody Gardens Golf Course plays around Sydnor Bayou and as such you’ll find upland and lowland native areas, shorebird habitat, and water coming into play on 17 holes. The course takes advantage of the natural landscape of water, brush, and sand. Texas or Scotland? Newport Dunes gives golfers a taste of the Auld Sod. This is a course that’s ultra-playable and fun, especially when the constant wind kicks it up a notch. And, hey, if you’re a golfer, you know a little about surviving just by playing the game. That means you’ll fit right in at Moody Gardens.

Palmer designs a true links experience at Newport Dunes Located on the northern tip of Mustang Island, Port Aransas is the hub of coastal activities and family fun on the Texas Coast. The bays, jetties and deep Gulf waters offer the finest fishing around, and the town – known locally as Port A – offers beautiful beaches leading to deep blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

It is also the perfect spot for a true linksstyle golf course, a vision turned into reality by the Arnold Palmer Design Group with Newport Dunes Golf Club. Weighing

in at 6,821 windswept yards from its back set of five tees, the par-71 track meanders through sweeping untamed native dunes and offers spectacular views of both the Gulf and Corpus Christi Bay. Reminiscent of the coastal links in Scotland, Newport Dunes challenges golfers with indigenous ocean breezes, rolling fairways lined with native grasses and imposing greens. True to the links design, Newport Dunes features stacked wall bunkers and deceptive landing areas, all of which make the course – rated at 72.9 and sloped at 121 – play much harder than the scorecard indicates.

“We truly believe that Newport Dunes plays more like a course with a 138 or 139 slope because of the bunkers, the winds and the contours on the greens,” said Kevin Michael, Newport Dunes’ general manager.

“Our fairways here – which are grassed with Seashore Paspalum – are wide, but they are rolling, and they end with punitive native areas.”

Newport Dunes’ fairways traverse over, up, down and through the windswept dunes and past coastal native flora, rare and endangered seaside plants and the rich greens of seashore grass, making it visually stunning as well as a real blast to play. Like playing on coastal links in Scottish links courses, controlling ball trajectory, accuracy rather than distance and adjusting to conditions are the keys to scoring well.

Holes 1-3 play on the north side of the highway that splits Mustang Island and run toward and away from Corpus Christi Bay. Once back on the south side, 13 of Newport Dunes’ remaining 15 holes play either into or with the wind – depending on the day and time of year – making the course a different challenge with each round.

Perhaps the most picturesque offering at Newport Dunes is the 148-yard par-3 13th, from which you can see over the grasscovered dunes that separate the course from the beach. Then at 14 (a 381-yard par-4) the www.golfoklahoma.org •••••• 33

large putting surface seems to disappear between grass-covered dunes – there’s more room on the green than you think.

The closer at Newport Dunes allows you to leave the course with some bragging rights. A par-5 playing at 508 yards, you must avoid two large grassy dunes at the landing area and three small bunkers at the front of the green.

Newport Dunes should be considered one of the best courses in Texas. With its perfect conditioning, fantastic landscaping and firstclass touches like wooden flag poles and old-time wooden trap rakes, the experience at Newport Dunes is second to none.

Changes in latitude and attitude at South Padre Island GC There is a change in attitude as you go further south in latitude on your way toward the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. Here – even as the region continues to grow in population and as a center for commerce and a link to Mexico – time seems to pass a little slower. This is a place where life is good and the living is fun and a bit more laid back.

A recent National Golf Foundation poll found that the Rio Grande Valley has more

playable days of golf per year (less than 25 days lost) than anywhere else in the United States, making the Valley the place to tee it up once the weather turns frigid.

Longtime PGA Tour professional Dave Stockton once said, “When the ducks are walking, you know it is too windy to be playing golf.” The South Texas coast is a place where folks don’t even mention the wind unless it tops the 40-mile per hour mark.

At the South Padre Island Golf Club, golfcourse designers Stephen Caplinger and Chris Cole took the fact that there would normally be at least a 20-mph wind into consideration when they fashioned the track. Around every bend and on virtually every hole at South Padre Island Golf Club, you will find reasons that it is one of the finest in the Rio Grande Valley. Enveloped by nature and buffeted by the wind, the track is truly an oasis.

Set across Laguna Madre, the area’s intercoastal waterway, from its island namesake, South Padre Island GC features a handful of holes right on the water, all just a few short miles from the Gulf of Mexico – it’s the southernmost course in Texas. Don’t expect protection from the wind, so just deal with it and take advantage of the chances you will have to attack the course with the

breeze at your back.

Opened in 1997 as the centerpiece of a gleaming residential community developed

by Landmark Land, the folks behind PGA West, Kiawah Island and Oak Tree, the South Padre Island GC plays to a par of 72 and is 6,931 yards from its back set of five tees. It carries a rating of 73.8 and a slope of 129, but the track must be taken seriously, especially when its hardest holes – the 415yard par-4 eighth, the 409-yard par-4 11th and (perhaps surprisingly) the 133-yard par3 12th – play into a stout wind.

For most of the year, the course’s shorter holes play into the wind (making them more of a challenge) and its longer offerings are tackled with a helping breeze, which allows you to hit the ball farther but also affects the spin on your ball on the approaches.

The design features wide fairways bordered by native yucca, mesquite and cactus, and shots that fail to find the fairway will bury in waste areas and deep rough.

The challenges at South Padre Island GC are varied and testing. The holes go one direction, then turn for a while, then go in another direction. Besides the wind, you’ll also face water on half the offerings plus wetlands and high grass areas to make your round even more interesting.

l Paso is a part of Texas but a world away from just about everything else in the Lone Star State. It lies in a different time zone and is set at the end of the Texas frontier and the gateway to New Mexico’s Land of Enchantment. It’s also home to a high-desert terrain of sand and rock and cactus and scrub brush that’s perfect for target golf, an oasis of green amid the earth tones and dust devils.

All this adds up to a boon for golfers, who can tee it up year-round and get different challenges depending on the seasons and the wind. The city has two great daily-fee golf courses – Butterfield Trail Golf Club and the 27-hole Painted Dunes Golf Course.

Butterfield Trail GC is the only public premium Tom Fazio-designed course in Texas and was recently ranked as the No. 3 Best Municipal Course by Golfweek Magazine.

The ranking comes as the course celebrated its fifth anniversary in 2012. Butterfield Trail GC, a par-72 playing at 7,307 yards from the championship tees, is routed across 175 acres on property owned by the El Paso International Airport and is managed by KemperSports.

tinctive desert topography, including sand dunes and native flora and fauna, which highlight the Southwest’s natural beauty.

There’s more than 55 feet of elevation change on the site. Most of the greens at Butterfield Trail GC (www.butterfieldtrailgolf. com) are raised, and there are knolls, a few blind shots and plenty of bunkers, including vast waste areas. Sections of the course have a links-link feel and others are desert, targetgolf tests. The whole course flows together in dual loops around two large lakes.

Butterfield Trail GC’s par-3s may be its best holes. The 10th is one of the most beautiful on the course; from the tee, you get a real links feel with the sand dunes and bunkering left of the green. You can see most of the golf course from the elevated tee on the par-3 17th, which overlooks the hole’s large putting surface 233 yards away.

Until Butterfield Trail was built, the only real option for high-end public golf in El Paso was Painted Dunes GC, located about 10 miles north toward the Texas-New Mexico state line.

Painted Dunes Desert Golf Course was designed by architects Ken Dye (who fashioned the original 18 holes) and Jeffrey

Brauer (the architect for the newest nine, the North course). Carved out of the Chihuahuan Desert, the East, West and North courses at Painted Dunes sit at the foothills of the Franklin Mountains and offer the scenic beauty of native foliage and desert wildlife.

Here you’ll find plenty of championshipstyle golf, with undulating greens and rolling hills that make finesse and good aim imperative. The layout rewards golfers who can manage their golf game around the penalties that lie in wait. It is a true desert course designed with great imagination.

Because the landscape is very flat, just 100,000 cubic yards of dirt were moved during the course’s construction. Players will see native cacti, mesquite, creosote bushes and Mormon tea plants, which signifies the area was once used as a trail by pioneers.

Rebirth of The Ridges by bill harper The Ridges golf complex in Arkansas was in danger of being a $7 million mistake.

That’s how much the state of Arkansas spent on initial construction of the Andy Dye-designed 27-hole facility in scenic Village Creek State Park in eastern Arkansas near Crowley’s Ridge, hoping to draw visitors from both Memphis and Little Rock.

The state’s partner in the project, Valley Creek Resort LLC, was to supervise construction, operate the course and build a resort lodge and other amenities. Things didn’t work out and Valley Creek went under, leaving the course mostly completed but in bad shape, and the clubhouse unfinished. That left the state in a quandary. Pull the plug or pump in even more money.

Arkansas’ Department of Parks and Tourism, with director Greg Butts and regional supervisor Marcel Hanzlik leading the way, pushed hard for finishing the project. They found another $2 million on top of the original $7 million investment to complete the 5,000-square-foot clubhouse, build a cart barn, complete the driving range and improve turfgrass conditions throughout.

The improvement is ongoing.

“It needed a lot of work,” said director of golf Jesse Weeks, a 30year veteran of the golf industry. “There were lots of issues. Drainage. Downed limbs, trees. The conditioning had suffered. The previous owners hadn’t spent any money to maintain it.’’

It was no small undertaking. That’s why it was prudent to simply lock the gate, close the doors and make the much-needed repairs and upgrades.

Weeks, when he talks about The Ridges, sounds like he’s giving a halftime rah-rah pep talk, which is something the former football coach has done.

“We want to make this the best public golf course in the state,” he said. “And the state wants it too.

“We have the three 9-hole courses open. And we have a new clubhouse being built along with an imaginative driving range with golfers hitting into a beautiful hillside setting. And we’re building a gigantic putting area. Amenities you need at a resort golf course.

All of it should be open next summer. Then the next phase will be constructing a lodge so golfers can come and stay.”

Making things more accessible doesn’t hurt either. Construction has begun on a more direct entrance to the facility, with a direct route off Arkansas 284 highway. It’s only 13 miles north of I-40 from Exit 242 at Forrest City and Wynne.

What does all this mean to Arkansas? Plenty. While the state basically wants to break even, it also wants the course to not only draw golfers but other tourists, especially those who enjoy bike trails, hiking, camping and even some fishing. It has two lakes.

The course will be a member of the Natural State Golf Trail, which features a dozen of the state’s top public-access courses.

According to Weeks, the course is considered the second-toughest course in the state, behind The Blessings, the notoriously difficult Robert Trent Jones Jr. layout near Fayetteville. That’s not usually good news for a resort course, but Weeks said all skill levels will enjoy it, playing the proper set of tees.

Around the Bend Spicy golf in Louisiana by bill harper For the adventurous golfer who may want to combine spicy five-course meals with a five-course trip, mosey around northern Louisiana for a week.

A recent tour conducted by the Explore Louisiana North highlighted the five northernmost courses on the Audubon Golf Trail.

Some had as much kick as Louisiana’s famed cuisine.

One upside to Louisiana golf is that if things are going bad on the course, just go eat. Numerous places, such as Tunks at Toledo Bend Resort, to name one, were awesome. Seafood and Cajun fare dominate and I bit the head off my first crawfish.

The steaks are a wonder as well, especially at Waterfront Grill at the Black Bear Golf Course. No A-1 steak sauce needed.

But golf comes first.

The northern Louisiana tour included stops at five venues: Olde Oaks Golf Club outside Shreveport; Cypress Bend Resort Golf on Toledo Bend Lake just outside Many; OakWing Golf Club in Alexandria; Tamahka Trails at Marksville (next door to the new Paragon Casino Resort) and Black Bear Golf Course outside Delhi.

All five of those dogs can hunt. All were different breeds, but nary a mutt in the bunch.

Many consider Black Bear the elite; at least Golfweek thought so when it labeled it as the one everyone must play in Louisiana.

And it is a superior layout.

When asked what he considered the signature hole, director of golf Eric Kasper didn’t hesitate: “All 18. Really!”

He might be right. Hole after hole offered challenges plus scenic surroundings. Designers Dave Bechtol and Randy Russell apparently didn’t tamper much with the natural topography.

Black bear sightings are not uncommon.

Back in his day Teddy Roosevelt would visit and hunt those critters there. Presidents used to do things like that.

All we spotted was a snake. So much for that golf ball.

Not taking a backseat to Black Bear are a couple of courses in the Shreveport area.

Olde Oaks Golf Club has great lineage, with pro golfer and Shreveport native Hal Sutton putting in his two-cents worth on the design. It features three nine-hole tracks: the Oak, Cypress and Meadow.

General manager Kevin Coppins proudly calls Sutton’s layout “one of the finest in the region” with good reason. And wildlife lovers will have a great time identifying the myriad egrets, blue herons and other waterfowl that call the course home.

Meredith Duncan, an LPGA golfer from Shreveport, says, “This course makes you hit almost every shot. It’s a really tough challenge.”

The Oak and Cypress layouts feature the area lakes, trees and hills while the Meadow is more my style – open. However, it is long, measuring nearly 3,700 yards with two par5s stretching more than 500 yards.

Cypress Bend indeed was a great adventure. For starters, bring a fishing pole.

Toledo Bend Lake, a massive 186,000-acre impoundment, is famous nationally – if not internationally – for huge bass; no, make that gigantic.

The golf course, while visually spectacular, can be a purgatory for those not in control of their game.

As an example, No. 10’s tee box is high above the fairway but the landing area is only a short distance away (about 210 yards) and then it takes a drastic right turn. Hit it short, you still have to negotiate getting around the hill. Hit it long, and you could go through the fairway or possibly wind up in the belly of a largemouth bass.

Cypress Bend isn’t easy. And, as golf operations manager Ken Rams points out, “you have to play it two or three times to under-

stand where to hit the ball.” Many holes have blind landing areas and at least 10 border or cross portions of the lake.

The 17the hole has an inlet in front and the lake behind with an elevated tee box. As Rams noted, “In the late evenings this hole is spectacular with the sunsets.”

My next trip will include a stay at the resort with its majestic views and elegant country inn décor.

Tamahka Trails just looked easy. As course superintendent Tex Reed laughed, “We give golfers a wee bit of a different challenge than just all the lakes and bayous and hills.”

Translation: Bunkers. Lots of them. After hitting into a few and nearly killing myself getting out (yep, they are deep), I simply called them hellholes. Can I say that in a golf magazine?

“We don’t have all the water other courses have,” said director of golf Matt Goldsmith.

They make up for it with the bunkers.

Still big, crazy and golf mad by james a. frank There are two questions no one can answer definitively about Myrtle Beach.

First: How big is it? The area referred to as the “Grand Strand” stretches about 70 miles, roughly from Shallotte, N.C., to Pawleys Island, S.C. It’s a long way but linked end to end by Highway 17, which is lined by amusements and amenities to suit every taste.

Second: How many golf courses are there? A few years ago, the count stood around 120, but a few dozen washed away in the recent economic hurricane. Still, there are at least 90. That’s more than enough.

The point is, whatever you’ve heard about Myrtle Beach — including its designation as the “golf capital of the world” — is no exaggeration. Myrtle is big, it’s crazy, it’s golf-mad.

But most of all, it’s fun. And a trip worth making no matter what kind of golfer you are.

The going is easy because the airport is centrally located, there are hundreds of hotels in all price and quality ranges, and you can eat anything from fast food to the finest food. But best of all, Myrtle Beach is the original golf-package paradise, with rounds and rooms bundled together for enormous savings. Do a little Internet browsing—start with the sites for Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday (golfholiday.com) and National Golf Management (mbn.com)—and you’ll be overwhelmed with options.

The hard part is choosing where to play.

Whether you’re coming for a long weekend

or a month in a seaside condo, expect to have choices and lots of them. Relying on my own visits and the views of some local experts, here are the top dozen or so courses. If you can work a few of these into any Myrtle Beach golf-fest, you’ll leave more than happy.

My favorite course is The Dunes, Myrtle’s second-oldest track having been laid out by Robert Trent Jones Sr. in 1947. A private club that’s open to the public, guests are treated like members. But it’s the big, classic course — featuring wide fairways and large greens, and freshened by breezes off the nearby ocean — that’s the real treat. And there are few holes anywhere more exciting than the par-5 13th, bending more than 90 degrees around Lake Singleton and daring golfers to go for it.

Near the southern end of the Strand are two Mike Stranz-designed layouts side-by-side.

Caledonia Fish and Golf Club is the gentler, but still heavily mounded and undulating.

Its fraternal twin, True Blue, is the more extreme and diabolical. Fairways are wide but tees placed in odd positions, and the hazards — sand and water — are carved into unusual shapes that add to the surreal atmosphere.

The late Stranz was part-artist/part-madman and his courses are love ’em or hate ’em masterpieces you need to see for yourself.

Next door to True Blue is a course that couldn’t be more different. Even its name, The Heritage Club, evokes age-old traditions and an ambience epitomized by the moss-

draped trees that enshroud the entrance drive. More trees line the fairways and guard some of the tricky, rolling greens. Look for the historic plaques that mark graveyards near the fourth green and eighth tee: Across the street is Pawley’s Plantation, a Jack Nicklaus design comprised of two distinctively different nines. The front winds through big trees, fancy homes, and the sort of overcooked mounding Jack made famous three decades ago. But once the Atlantic starts to loom around hole 12, everything changes: Two par-3s play across a wide salt marsh to hard-to-find greens, while the rest of the finish is affected by breezes and egos, the golfer’s and Jack’s. Pawley’s is one tough test, good enough to make you ignore some Nicklausian excess.

The oldest golf club in Myrtle Beach is Pine Lakes International, which started it all in 1927. Known as “The Granddaddy” for its ancestral role, Pine Lakes is no fuddy-duddy but a challenging and charming reminder of golf’s golden age. It’s the perfect course for walking (and one of the few on the Strand that allow it!), being generally flat with all the trouble in view. The clubhouse is especially attractive. Check out the old prints and clippings on the walls, as well as the Myrtle Beach Hall of Fame out back.

Grande Dunes is the name of a massive hotel/marina complex on the Intracoastal Waterway as well as a deceiving course just behind. After a rather uninspiring beginning, the course picks up steam — and piques one’s interest — when returning to the waterway that lines most of the back side.

Tidewater made a big splash when it opened a little more than 20 years ago because it was designed by an amateur, local attorney Ken Tomlinson, who followed his gut and the land. Moving through trees, in marsh, and along the Intracoastal over generally flat terrain, Tidewater is one of the area’s more natural layouts. If it’s lost a little luster of late, it’s still highly regarded.

There are four courses at the Barefoot Resort, designed by an amazingly talented quartet of architects: Pete Dye, Tom Fazio, Greg Norman and Davis Love. They’re all good, but I was especially taken by Love’s labor, which is wide open yet very strategic, demanding good distance control and a precise short game. Be sure to avoid the plantation house ruins on the front nine.

Among other courses favored by those who know are the TPC Myrtle Beach (also designed by Fazio), King’s North and River’s Edge (both Arnold Palmer), Willbrook (Dan Maples), the very difficult Long Bay (Nicklaus), and Prestwick (Pete and P.B. Dye).
