Some optimism for 2020

ne of the most interesting 90 minutes each year at the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando is the annual State of the Industry presentation by the golf industry analysts with Pellucid, led by Jim Koppenhaver. It is almost always a sobering session where the wild predictions of industry cheerleaders such as the National Golf Foundation and Golf 20-20 are doused with a bucket of cold reality and we all take stock of how to continue to thrive in a business that has lost nearly eight million golfers and well over 1,000 golf courses in the last 15 years. In 2019 in the U.S. there were 19 new courses whch opened and 103 that closed. Pellucid has pretty good figures on the ones that opened but I suspect there are some out-of-the-way courses that closed of which they are unaware. We run into that each year when compiling the updated listings for this Directory and Travel Issue. Not only are we losing high profile public courses such as White Hawk in Bixby but it is the closing of more modest courses in smaller markets that may be the only course within 60 miles that really hurt the game. We have seven fewer golf courses operating in Oklahoma in 2020 than we did in 2019, including public courses in Hugo, Muskogee, Coweta, Sallisaw, Healdton and Warner. Losing a course you love is tough and I feel for all those throughout the state who can no longer play on a course they have come to love and appreciate. The privately-owned public course model has been hard pressed, particularly in a year with record poor weather. However, for the health of the game, Koppenhaver wishes more courses would close, as he notes that supply still exceeds demand particularly in metropolitan areas and will for the foreseeable future though the gap has narrowed. The SOI actually sounded some encouraging notes this year. Despite bad weather in much of the country (such as our record rainfalls), the rate of players leaving the game has decreased, revenue is actually up and rounds were fairly steady. 8

The municipal course dilemma is one taking place nationwide, Pellucid noted. As police and fire departments consume more and more of a sales taxbased municipal revenue stream, does a city decide that it wants to continue to maintain public golf if that requires an annual subsidy and periodic infusions of money for capital improvement projects? In Oklahoma, the answer in Oklahoma City and most municipalities is that golf is worth it and part of the fabric of a successful community, like a zoo, parks, or other recreational facilities. In Tulsa the support has not been there. We’re going to continue to press for a positive solution there. Just outside the room where the presentation takes place, the PGA Merchandise Show was in full swing with miles of booths showing off apparel, equipment, bags, jewelry, training aids, carts, range finders, luggage, simulators, travel opportunities, pain relief and much more to thousands of pros and media. Golf is an $84.1 billion industry affecting nearly two million jobs. Fortunately here in Oklahoma, we have a lot of dedicated stakeholders with the PGA, the Oklahoma Golf Association, the Women’s Oklahoma Golf Association and other groups working hard to improve access, make the game economical, welcoming and fun for everyone from kids to millennials to seniors and continue to introduce the game to new players of all ages. Golf is going to rebound as a new generation discovers that there’s nothing wrong with the game being a challenge, that challenge is part of its allure and what brings you back each week. Now in my sixth decade I still expect the next round to be my best one yet. And each year I take greater pleasure in pushing myself in competitive play, puzzling out the inherent challenge of each course in casual play and in the company of my friends. There is no other game that comes close to golf in what it offers. To all those who give so much to the game in our state, here’s hoping that 2020 is a great year and the beginning of a sustained growth period for the game.

Whistling Straits, Sand Valley, Erin Hills bring links to life

e would be the last to discourage any trip to Ireland, Scotland, Wales or England for authentic links golf. For those who want a similar experience without crossing the pond, there are finally several really good options open to the public right here in the United States. Bandon Dunes on the Pacific Coast in Oregon has been a personal favorite since it opened. Wisconsin obviously lacks an ocean. But a few golf writers and friends put together an itinerary late last summer that, minus the ocean views and breezes, was the equal of any links adventure we’ve had, with better food. You’ve likely heard for years about Whistling Straits and the collection of three other Pete Dye gems at Kohler on the windy shores of Lake Michigan. The magnificent 80-foot dunes on the Straits course look like they’ve been around for 10

centuries, even if in reality it was an abandoned airstrip not 50 years ago. Whistling Straits hosted the PGA Championship in 2010 and 2015 and the merchandise is all over the pro shop for the 2020 Ryder Cup. Along with The

Irish and the nearby inland Blackwolf Run courses, all designed by Pete and Alice Dye, it’s been a bucket list destination for U.S. golfers since it opened in 1998. Although there are many excellent courses to choose from on a Wisconsin

Aptly named Sand Valley Golf Course opened May 2, 2017. Designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. golf trip, the state’s cachet went up a few notches when Erin Hills opened in 2006 and in 2010 was awarded the 2017 U.S. Open. Erin Hills is a massive, walkingonly brute of a course that looks very much like a course that could be discovered on a windy coast in Ireland, but plays a bit slower than most links courses despite having fine fescue fairways bordered by waves of tall fescue rough. The capper for our group was the opening two years ago of Sand Valley Golf Resort in Nekoosa. Another project of Mike Keiser, who did both Bandon Dunes and Cabot Links in Nova Scotia. Sand Valley currently consists of two 18-hole courses, Sand Valley designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw and Mammoth Dunes designed by David McLay Kidd, the architect of Bandon Dunes. It also has a wonderful par-3 course dubbed The Sandbox and a third 18-hole course by Tom Doak is the next step.

There are many ways to approach this trip. We flew to Milwaukee, rented a car, drove three hours to Sand Valley for two days of bliss, then another three hours up to Kohler for two more memorable days of golf. The next morning a 72-mile shot to Erin Hills, which is in the tiny town of Hartford. From there, it’s just an hour or so back to the Milwaukee airport. You won’t find golf carts and you will want to take or at least share a caddie at all three of these destinations. Be prepared for firm fescue fairways that roll out, a good deal of wind, sand and water, and to be faced with choices of what type of shot to play on nearly every hole. Golf as it should be. Let’s take a closer look at each.

Only bite off as much as you can chew at Erin Hills. sically a links golf trip brought home to America – has been embraced by so many thousands of U.S. golfers who previously were thought to care more about target golf while riding in carts. “There’s no way my dad could have imagined it playing out like this,” said Chris Keiser, who along with his brother

Michael, are spearheadi ng the Sand Valley development. “He had a strong inkling and intuition that he wasn’t the only one who enjoyed that style of golf, the bumpand-run, the sand dunes and the firm and fast conditions. But luckily for all of us and everyone who enjoys it, he’s a great entrepreneur and he

pulled it off.” Chris was referring to Bandon Dunes, which has been an overwhelming success. Sand Valley is more of the same. It will continue to expand in both number of courses and rooms available. It does have basically a mid-May through October season due to the weather.

The sandy soil so crucial to firm and fast conditions is no issue at Sand Valley. It was built on the site of a prehistoric glacial lake. When an ice dam burst and the water flooded out, it left a massive deposit of sand sometimes hundreds of feet deep. The pictures on these pages are a better description than I can muster of what you’ll face at both Sand Valley and Mammoth Dunes. Mammoth Dunes has more elevation with its routing along and through an 80-foot sand dune. Enjoy the challenge. For tennis lovers, the resort offers 15 grass courts. Fishing, biking and walking trails are also part of the experience. And don’t leave without sampling the Buffalo cheese curds.

WHISTLING STRAITS The back story of Whistling Straits and the immense success of the Kohler family and what the plumbing fixture company has meant to the state is fascinating. By all means take time to explore the Kohler Design Center and museum, where you can stroll through a history of Kohler Co. from its humble beginnings to out-of-thisworld current and future designs. As you can imagine, the showers in

Erin Hills, number four. With a shallow green and wetlands beyond the green, the approach is the a demanding hole. The American Club, the five-star resort and centerpiece for Destination Kohler, are spectacular. You reluctantly have to turn off the jets and leave the historic building with its five dining options and the Winery Bar, where you can order a vintage 1.5-ounce glass of Balvenie for just $3,295, and board a shuttle for Whistling Straits. Dye had more than 7,000 truckloads of

sand shipped in to construct the mounds and bunkers on what was a flat piece of land farmland later used by the U.S. Army as an antiaircraft training facility. There are close to 1,000 bunkers on Whistling Straits alone, hundreds more on The Irish. Eight of the holes on Whistling Straits hug the shoreline with varying degrees of peril and Lake Michigan is in view throughout. We played The Straits at around 6,400

yards of a course that can now be stretched to 7,790 yards for the pros. Our caddies laughed about the adventures of many high handicappers who visit and insist on playing the back tees so they can experience all of Whistling Straits. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a wonder some of them ever finish. There are two approaches when playing a bucket-list course to which you may or may not return. Have a chance to experience a great

The bunker where Dustin Johnson incurred his two-stroke penalty in the 2010 PGA Championship was covered by grandstands for the PGA Championship in 2015 and likely will be again for the Ryder Cup. But your caddy should be able to point it out to you on the right on the 18th hole. You may have had your fill of bunkers by then. The Irish Course is beautiful as well, though not as penal or dramatic. Only four holes have lake views. around the world. “We even received designs from 8- and12-year-olds,” said Craig, who has visited every surviving Maxwell design (53 courses from an estimated 70) and said Old Town Club in Winston-Salem, N.C., is probably his favorite. “We obviously preferred designs we felt Maxwell would have approved of. November 15th was the closing date – the 67th anniversary of his passing,” Craig said. The winner of the $500 first prize was 28-year-old Reid Turner, an Australian currently doing shaping work for Ogilvy, Cocking and Mead (OCM). Turner said he’s been drawing golf holes since he was 5. “I’ve always loved it and certainly hope to become a designer myself one day,” Turner said. “We don’t have any Maxwell courses in Australia, so I’m actually more of an Alister MacKenzie fan. His bunkering and green complexes were amazing – we saw just how good they are during the Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne, my favorite course.” Among contemporary Reid Turner designers, Turner most admires Tom Doak, whose visual challenges he regards as exceptional. “I’m always scared hitting into his greens,” Turner said. “But when you reach them, you realize you can miss them in certain spots, and it makes you want to come back and play the hole again.” Turner estimates it took two months of edits, updates, and rethinks, to arrive at his final design after taping the site map to his desk and covering it with a roll of baking paper upon which he drew tee and green sites with a sharpie. “My initial concern was how to tackle the steepness of the ground around the clubhouse,” Turner said. “As uninteresting as it may sound, there weren’t any features I had to have. It was more about keeping true to Perry Maxwell’s design style.” Judging by the photographs and routings Turner had seen, that meant keeping it simple with minimal bunkers and tees close to greens. “After I’d identified the position of the tees and greens, it was really just a case of joining the dots,” Turner said. “Looking back, I’d say I had about 10 different routings on my desk when I chose the one for the competition.” To judge the contest, Craig selected course architects Trey Kemp and Andy Staples, the first two designers to join the Perry Maxwell

A different take at the lake Bear Creek, Deer Chase and Lake Valley are unheralded gems at Lake of the Ozarks by ken macleod

his writer has been fortunate to play a lot of outstanding courses at the Lake of the Ozarks over the years, but I’m both sheepish to admit and quite glad to find out that there was still a full trip worth of hidden gems that I had yet to discover. This trip left out favorites such as Old Kinderhook, The Cove, Osage National, The Oaks and The Ridge in favor of a trio of venues new to us. Or new to one of us anyway. My playing partner remembered he had played Bear Creek Valley in the past, right after he got through lightening my wallet on the 18th

hole. I played a round of bumper pool trying to navigate my way around the twisting holes of this hilly, tree-lined beauty, not conducive to winning bets. More on that later. We’re going to start with Deer Chase Golf Club, where the announced goal by head pro Spencer Wilson is to go from the Lake’s best kept secret to its busiest venue. Charming is an apt word to describe the bucolic setting, the wooded, low-lying front nine and the small pro shop and restaurant. We’ll put charming aside for the back nine, however, and go with riveting or dramatic. Deer Chase was designed by Roger Nall of St. Louis, an architect intimately familiar with designing courses to take best advan-

tage of the Ozarks terrain. He certainly did that on the back nine, using the surrounding ridges to create holes that rise and tumble, providing long scenic views while offering plenty of opportunities for both birdies and disasters. It’s just a really fun nine that adds to a great overall experience. The fairways are zoysia and had recently been overseeded with rye when we played, while the greens have an A-1, A-4 bentgrass blend and putted true. We started out the trip with a round at Lake Valley, a member-owned club located just a few minutes from Old Kinderhook, south of the Lake. The 250 or so members make their club available to Lake visitors who account for 50 percent or more of the rounds in season. Lake Valley is unusual in offering six par5s, six par-4s and six par-3s. Even with that

Deer Chase meanders around several large ponds and also cuts through the forested Ozark hills. many par-5s, it measures just over 6,400 yards, but it may be the longest 6,400 yards you will ever play. “It seems like every hole is uphill,” said general manager Rob Wilson. “I remember when I first came here I thought this is going to be pretty easy with six par-5s. But it’s not as easy as you think.”

Not at all. Not when a typical downhill hole is the par-3 seventh, 230 yards to a narrow green. I guess it’s better than an uphill 230-yard par-3, but still you get the point. Not easy. Several of the par-5s may be reachable for longer hitters, but during our outing the ground was soft and the bluegrass overseed

Once fully established, the bluegrass should thrive year round in that climate, providing a green playing surface in the fall and winter and not allowing the Bermuda to take over again. It will be a big agronomic benefit for Lake Valley. The greens were firm and fast on our

for one of the main settings on the Netflix show “Ozark.” If you’ve watched the show, you’ll know what I’m referring to. Driving it straight is pretty much a must to enjoy, let alone conquer, Bear Creek Valley. There is plenty of elevation change, but the holes also bend enough that errant driving is punished by recovery shots that leave you playing hard for bogey. It has some wonderfully dramatic holes, including the 183-yard par-3 16th with a 90-foot drop from the highest elevation on the property to the green below. The zoysia fairways and bent grass greens at Bear Creek Valley were in superb condition on our visit. The bar and restaurant was welcoming and the pro shop well stocked with the essentials. All three courses are reasonably priced, most rates under $80 or even far less depending on the season and day. There are many excellent venues for basing your trip at Lake of the Ozarks. How Edmond became the center of the golf universe

he year was 1971, Edmond was a small bedroom community of about 18,000 north of Oklahoma City and known for anything but golf. Its first golf course, a tree-lined municipal course called Kickingbird, was just set to open. Now this bustling city of nearly 90,000 is home to seven courses, has produced 48 high school team championships, has more Champions Tour, PGA Tour and aspiring pros at one course than just about any club in the U.S., has the only junior golf hall of fame of which we’re aware, has hosted numerous USGA and PGA championships and is generally recognized as one of the best golf communities in the country.

How did this happen? It all started at Kickingbird back in 1971. The way head pro Art Proctor ran the course in the early days might horrify parents and draw a quick visit from the district attorney today, but he was laying the groundwork for Edmond to blossom into one of the great golf centers in the Southwest. Proctor, one of the state’s best players, teachers and all-around golf gurus, had a willing workforce of kids as young as age 11 up through high school, all paid for by free golf and range balls. Steven Steele,

who now runs the Edmond Junior Golf Hall of Fame founded by Mike McGraw, remembers getting dropped off at 5 a.m. daily in the summer at age 12 and before 6 a.m. he was on the back patio with a microphone serving as the starter for the always packed tee sheet. When he was 13, Steele graduated to scrubbing the grill where some of the state’s best cheeseburgers are cooked, a task he did for 365 consecutive days, a record he is proud of to this day. He also saw his forearms swell from 8-to-14 inches around and his driving distance increase by 70 yards in one summer. While Proctor was grooming a swarm of dedicated young golf nuts, he had also basically saved the Oklahoma Open from

He would start you off as a forecaddie, then graduate to picking up range balls, cart boy, odd jobs and then working in the shop. It was a great place for a kid to grow up and learn a lot of responsibility.” Some of those kids, like David Edwards, went on to be pro golfers. But the high school programs really took off when McGraw took over at Edmond North in 1987. The high schools were now benefitting not only from the players produced at Kickingbird, but also at Oak Tree Country Club, with its 36 holes designed by Pete Dye and great practice facilities, which had opened in 1981 with the final holes completed in 1984. It was the destination of choice for many affluent families moving to Edmond and a great breeding ground of golf talent as well. Then there was the influence of Oak Tree Golf Club, now Oak Tree National. W W W.GOLFOKL AHOMA.ORG

amazing place.” Add Hugh Edgmon, Stan Ball, Steve Ball, current OGA Executive Director Mark Felder, current Oak Tree pro Steve Kimmel and a great many other PGA pros and characters who contributed at either of the three facilities to making Edmond the golf hot spot it became. Working the range at Kickingbird you could come upon youngsters such as Bill Self, current KU basketball coach, or Kelly Ogle, anchor at News 9 in Oklahoma City. Oak Tree National was not only home to the pros, but a site of championships, including the 1984 U.S. Amateur, the 1988 PGA Championship, the 2006 Senior PGA

EDMOND GOLF Championship and the 2014 U.S. Senior Open. It would have held the PGA Championship in 1994, but the parent company, Landmark Land Co., was experiencing a meltdown due to a battle with the Resolution Trust Corporation over a savings and loan. The tournament was moved to Southern Hills CC in Tulsa. Between the pros at Oak Tree National and the amazing talent coming up through the ranks at Kickingbird and Oak Tree CC, Edmond began to dominate high school golf (chart) in the state, producing even more professionals, such as Edmond North graduates Robert Streb and Kevin Tway, both currently on the PGA Tour. As Edmond’s population continued to grow, other courses opened to feed the demand, including Coffee Creek, Rose Creek, Silver Horn, River Oaks Golf Club and the Golf Club of Edmond. Coffee Creek and Silver Horn have closed in recent years, victims of a combination of overbuilding and a general national contraction in golf play. Oak Tree National retains its unique character under the leadership of owner Everett Dobson and Jones, who is the president and chief operating officer. A whole new group of young professionals now rub

elbows with the remaining Oak Tree Gang members still at the club including Morgan, Tway, Verplank and Woods. “It’s an amazing place,” Jones said. “We had a guest out recently and he sees Brandt Jobe (Champions Tour), Rhein Gibson (PGA Tour) and Michael Gellerman (PGA Tour) coming up nine, then the next group has Sam Bradford (NFL quarterback), Mickey Tettleton (former major league baseball star and top amateur golfer) and Brandon Weeden (NFL quarterback). “Edmond golf has been good for a long time,” Proctor said. “Mike is a big reason why. He was a great teacher and a great coach. Then you had Oak Tree and the way it took off. The pros all helped out.” McGraw would hand out awards at the end of each summer’s junior program and the pros would take turns helping him hand out the trophies. When it was Morgan’s turn, he stuck around and signed autographs for all 250 campers. “Mike McGraw was a very unusual person,” Tewell said. “He had tremendous

We were all very happy to help him anyway we could.” Edmond high schools have won 48 team championships and produced more than 30 individual champions, all but one (Danny Edwards 1969) since Kickingbird opened in 1971. Kickingbird is planning major renovations of its clubhouse and irrigation system. Oak Tree National, under the leadership of Jones and Dobson, is home to a new Oak Tree Gang and continues to push forward on hosting major events. Edmond Golf Club has improved immensely under the recent leadership of owner Michael Henderson. A three-time first-team All-American at OSU, he was selected as the 1981 Fred Haskins Award winner as the nation’s top collegiate golfer and was the 1979 Big Eight Conference medalist. • Morgan was a two-time Ryder Cup member (1979 and 1983) who finished third in the Masters, U.S. Open and PGA ChamBob Tway pionship (twice) on the PGA Tour and claimed three major championships as a senior, winning The Tradition in back-to-back years (199798) and capturing the 1998 Ford Seniors’ Championship. He ranks fourth all-time on the senior tour with 25 career wins. • Morgan and Dillard left historic marks at the 1992 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, where Dillard began the tournament posting a re-

Verplank became the first amateur in 29 years to win a PGA Tour event, claiming the 1985 Western Open at Butler National in a playoff over Jim Thorpe. Battling Type 1 diabetes and hampered by multiple injuries throughout his career, Verplank was chosen Doug Tewell as the 2002 Ben Hogan Award winner by the GWAA for competing with a handicap or serious illness. Verplank overcame these obstacles to be selected for the Ryder Cup team in 2002 and 2006. For one club to house such diverse, wideranging success under the same roof is rare. But such is Oak Tree, one of the most unique golf sanctuaries anywhere.

ur Texas-based correspondents have been following the improvements and expansions at Horseshoe Bay Resort for years. It was past time for yours truly to make his way to Hill Country to see this burgeoning player in the Southwest golf resort market with his own eyes. An hour northwest of Austin, Horseshoe Bay is an easy reach for Oklahomans by air or land. The Hill Country had been blasted by a prolonged drought when we visited in the fall of 2019, but it wasn’t apparent once inside the oasis of the 2,400acre resort and community by the shores of Lake LBJ. The three courses always open to resort guests – Ram Rock, Slick Rock and Apple Rock – were all creations of the renowned Robert Trent Jones Sr., and all have undergone recent upgrades and improvements.

lthough the best golf trips are all about spending time with friends, what else makes an ideal golf trip? The answer is easy -- in addition to golf, there should be good times and great food. While many might not think of it at first, northwest Mississippi’s Delta region deserves a place high on everyone’s “mustgo” list. Bordering the Mississippi River, the Delta region runs south from Memphis for almost 200 miles to Vicksburg, Miss. Golf on the Delta is plentiful and certainly in the “value category” with the highest 18-hole weekend rate we found

During a recent weeklong visit to the Delta, we discovered blues history while stopping at many sites associated with its beginnings, such as the J.D. Williams Library at the University of Mississippi in Oxford and the Dockery Plantation outside Cleveland, Miss. In particular, Dockery is an excellent example of the venues where early Blues musicians played and can be rightfully called “The Birthplace of the Blues.” In Clarksdale, live blues music is heard 365 nights a year and we enjoyed Red’s Blues Club and the Ground Zero Blues Club where actor Morgan Freeman is a part-owner. Several well-known authors also have strong ties to the Delta with John Grisham and William Faulkner at the head of the list. Touring Faulkner’s home, Rowan Oak in Oxford, provided an interesting view into the private world of this Nobel Prize laurate. No exploration of the Delta would be complete without time in the GRAMMY Museum in Cleveland or the Gateway to the Blues Museum in Robinsonville, but the truth is our time on the Delta only allowed us to barely scratch the surface of all to be seen and done. And a short note about feeding the inner man. Experiencing the Shrimp and Original Grit Girl Grits (spicy cheese grits, sautéed shrimp with garlic, mushrooms, scallions, a little white wine, lemon juice and Big Bad bacon) as served by the City Grocery in Oxford was maybe worth the trip all by itself. But then it would be unfair to not mention the Memphis BBQ Company in Horn Lake where its World Championship baby back ribs draw natives and tourists alike. Of the hotels we stayed in, The Graduate in Oxford and The Cotton House in Cleveland were favorites with the charming atmosphere of the old South and staffed by friendly and courteous employees. The Delta golf courses we played started with the family owned Cherokee Valley Golf Club in Olive Branch. It is located a short drive from Memphis International Airport and has an interesting routing on and around a large slope. Cruit Island, a worthy first stop to this Ireland adventure.

Ireland’s wild Atlantic way by tom bedell

he ink was barely dry on the morning’s papers last July 22 when a band of U.S. golf writers wandered into a petrol convenience store barely two hours north of Dublin. About the first thing we saw was a rack of a half-dozen newspapers all proclaiming the joyful news that Shane Lowry had captured the title of Champion Golfer of the Year at the 148th Open Championship. Moreover, the Irishman had pulled off his feat at Royal Portrush, the first time the Open had been held in Ireland since 1951. (Pour yourself another bevy if you know that the winner of that title was Englishman Max Faulkner.) Even early on a Monday morning, Lowry’s lifting of the Claret Jug seemed to be doing the same for the country, putting it in an ebullient mood. No question our group was eager; we weren’t heading into Northern Ireland, but we were heading north and west, to what the Irish tourism folks like to refer to as the Wild Atlantic Way. That actually stretches south to West Cork, but we stuck to the north and played links courses over the next few days in County Donegal and County Sligo. And without question, they never 42

put the Atlantic out of sight or mind. Wild it could be, too; the wind rarely let up, and was occasionally moist, though hard rain never washed us down or out. Some of the crew had come over from the Open; the rest of us had just flown into Dublin and found our first course to be the perfect jet lag round — nine holes at the Cruit Island Golf Club. It was also a perfect example of why it’s sometimes smart to put one’s travel plans into the hands of a local expert. Simply checking off the names of well-known Irish courses would never have turned up this unheralded gem. Sure, you may have heard of such northwestern courses as Enniscrone, Donegal Golf Club, Rosapenna, County Sligo or Portsalon. But the Cruit Island Golf Club in Kincasslagh? Even if you have heard of it, you may not have heard it quite correctly.

County Donegal touches but a bare border to the rest of the Republic of Ireland. Mostly it cruises north and borders Northern Ireland to the east. That has led to a local marketing slogan, “Up here it’s different,” and there’s a dialect in the county that can be knotty to untangle. Cruit Island, for one, is actually pronounced “Critch Island.” No matter, one’s golf swing is the same, unless you’ve found ways to adapt to the wind. There’s plenty at Cruit, which may be more exposed to the Atlantic Ocean than some of the other tracks we played, although there are also some lovely views of the distant Mt. Errigal. Looking out from a tee across the watery expanses you may hear from one of 160 friendly members the oft-repeated line, “Next stop is America.” The course is easily in the running for one of the world’s best hidden links, and if you’ve W W W.GOLFOKL AHOMA.ORG

come from America you shouldn’t miss it. To get in 18 at Cruit Island to a par of 68 you’ll have to go around twice. That would be no hardship, except perhaps to your new World Handicap System index, even for a 2,570-meter nine. That the course was member-built in 1986 seems pretty remarkable once you tee it up on the par-3 sixth hole, as visually stunning a seaside hole as can be imagined, a seemingly mild 137-meter poke. Two holes later you could well be playing driver on a 195-meter par-3 eighth. LURE OF THE LINKS Liam McDevitt, a businessman on the U.S. east coast, is a native of Ireland’s west coast, and basically grew up playing at the Narin & Portnoo Golf Club. It was a par-69 then, but over the years ballooned to a par73. Its debt also swelled to the point that the future of the course was in doubt. In 2017, McDevitt and a partner assumed the debt and ownership of the course. They had the wisdom, passion and presumably the bankroll to convince the hottest architect on the planet to revitalize the course. Gil Hanse and his partner, Jim Wagner, completed the first phase of a redesign last spring. I’d not seen the course before, but I’d have to guess that all parties are pleased at the results, since the layout is nothing short of thrilling. Par is now 70, even if you play hole 14A in place of hole 11. Which is to say, options are available, and some tinkering of holes is still going on, but the pure wide-open airiness of this links course, playing through heaving dunes opening to gorgeous views of Gweebarra Bay is about as rugged and pleasing as links golf can be. A new clubhouse only adds to the ingratiating quality of the play and puts the course on the must-visit list. But the list only extended itself as we moved on the Donegal Golf Club in Murvagh, another course hugging the Atlantic

The Club has been around since 1959, but the current course opened in 1976, the layout by Eddie Hackett, perhaps the best-known Irish designer at the time. A fair amount of remodeling has been done in the years since, by that other irrepressible Irishman, Pat Ruddy. A new clubhouse was erected in 1998. Playing to a par-73 and stretching to 6,819 meters (7,453 yards) from the tips, Donegal is one of the longest courses in Ireland. When a par-3 hole, the 197-yard fifth, is called the Valley of Tears, it’s easy to see that Donegal is a challenge even for the likes of Open Champion and member Darren Clarke, who calls it one of his favorite courses in the world. I wouldn’t argue, though it’s tough to focus on trying to hit the smallish greens and avoid the devilish tight pot bunkers in such a splendid landscape of Email: sea and sky on a promontory jutting into the Atlantic Ocean.

Though it was a little difficult to believe after what had come before, our final course on Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way may well have been the most dramatic. The County Sligo Golf Club, a bit south of Donegal at Rosses Point (as the course is also known by), is yet another pelagic knockout, while tossing in views of mountains and meadows as more distracting asides. This is Yeats country, and it’s not inapt to call this a poem of a course. Around as a nine-holer since 1894, the current 18 was originally laid out by Harry Colt in 1927. But here, too, Pat Ruddy has been touching up the course for years now. (Another nine, the Jonathan Tuckerdesigned Bomore Course, is also on hand.)

Ireland, so it’s reasonable to suggest getting moving. If one has never played links golf, it’s a virtual necessity. And with such a plenitude of great links golf, it might be a reasonable question why one would want to play anything but on a short visit? We found out. Not every course in Ireland is hard by the sea, and there are charms to be had inland as well. Our arresting example came by way of our return trip toward Dublin, when we paused in Castleblayney in County Monaghan. Though the Castleblayney Golf Club began as nine holes in 1905, its fortunes and locations came and went through the decades. It was reborn in 1985 and moved to its current location as the Concra Wood Golf Course Castleblayney in 2008. The course was designed by two of Ireland’s late golfing legends, Christy O’Connor Jr. and Sr. (his uncle). They had a unique site to work with, working though hills and forests adjacent to a massive lake, Lough Muckno, locally renowned for its fishing. (Indeed, both the lake and the course have held professional tournaments.) The Lough may not be the Atlantic, but the way its views work sinuously through the course layout is nothing short of exhilarating. This is especially true on the 10th hole, calling for a fairly routine drive to an unwontedly level fairway. And by the time you reach the ball the land falls precipitously away, to a green far below, your puny strategy problems eclipsed by the splendor of the valley view outstretching ahead, seemingly to the ends of earth.
