or the travel issue we’re roaming a bit—to Scotland, and into the spectators’ seats for a couple of books that aren’t strictly about golf as about all sports. First, off to “Scotland: Home of Golf” ($45 via Amazon: https://amzn.to/2HoIk0P), courtesy of father and son photographers Iain and Christopher Lowe, with text and illustrations by David Joy. The Lowes have a long history of Scottish golf photography and publishing (scottishgolflibrary.com), and this volume shows that they’re now in glorious command of drones as well as onthe-ground shots. The architectural sensuality of the images is startling. If you’ve not been to Scotland, you’ll likely find them cruelly enticing, a mournful tease, considering the current travel restrictions. Or it may have you looking over flight reservations for the earliest safe opportunity to visit. Those of us who have roamed over some of the 14 links courses showcased here (ten of them on my life list), will appreciate just how fortunate we’ve been and pondering our own eager return. The cast includes some usual classic suspects: The Old Course, Muirfield, Carnoustie, North Berwick, Turnberry, Prestwick, Royal Troon, Royal Dornoch, Royal Aberdeen and Cruden Bay, as well as four newer beauties: Kingsbarns, Castle Stuart, Trump International and Dumbarnie. ready to toss his book across the room as a totally one-sided rosy argument until I reached page 136. Then he eased my mind, going deeper, and presenting more nuanced facets in the overall case. In a peanuts or crackerjacks nutshell, “Fans” dispels the cultural stereotype of a sports spectator as “the corpulent lazy guy,” a jersey-wearing couch potato swilling beer and scarfing nachos, probably a step away from starting a brawl. On the contrary, Olmsted rolls out study after study (and there seems to be no end to the medical and psychological research into the subject) to make the case that identifying with a sports team, or teams, makes us better people. And while the examples in the book are mostly about following team sports, Olmsted notes, “… it is possible to be a sports fan without having any favorite team— those spectators whose sportive interest is devoted entirely to individual competitions such as tennis, boxing or golf….” Olmsted has written a handful of books and more magazine articles than any other writer I know. Indeed, his various sections often read like a series of articles. If he doesn’t have the narrative chops of someone like a Callahan, say, he nonetheless hits a real stride when discussing the healing power of sports. “I still get teary when I reflect on the power of sports after 9/11,” he writes, and then proceeds to make the reader teary in recounting the story of Carol Gies, who lost her FDNY husband and the father of their three sons in the World Trade Center attack. Gies and her sons attended the first Mets (vs. Braves) game at Shea Stadium ten days after the attack. The family members were all huge Mets fans. DESIGNS Back on the literal earth, the American Society of Golf Course Architects Foundation has put out “Designs On a Better Golf Course: Practical Answers to Common Questions for Green Committees” (available through Amazon, $24.95). Though put together by a committee of ASGCA members, the text is primarily the work of architect Jeff Brauer from previous essays on various topics pertaining to designing, renovating or restoring golf courses. Though written like a text book, with PowerPoint-like questions and answers, Brauer is not without style and the occasional witticism— one factor in favor of extra irrigation pump and pipe costs is to: “...eliminate any chance of old men stripping down naked to run under the sprinklers to cool off on hot days. While selecting the clubs for our list from the dozens of new 2021 models, we paid particular attention to those with significant design features as well as those suitable for a range of skill levels from several different manufacturers. And before you buy, we strongly recommend a professional club fitting to ensure you are getting the best model for your swing. Ben Hogan Golf GS53 MAX driver This game-improvement driver is a four-piece construction with a 460cc clubhead offered in either 9° or 10.5° loft. The carbon-fiber crown and placement of a tungsten weight in the sole means the center of mass is low in the head and towards the rear so low-to-medium swing speeds will still produce a high ball flight. Mission Impossible? Not quite by tony dear

teve Lovett is the winner in this year’s Perry Maxwell Design Competition, in which entrants were asked to design a nine-hole course on a site that judge Brett Hochstein described as “frickin impossible.” Lovett, 53, took home a $500 cash prize. He is a 6-handicapper at Donald Ross’s Timuquana CC in Jacksonville, Fla., and a partner in architecture, planning and landscape at Ervin Lovett Miller (ELM). The competition, devised and run by Maxwell enthusiast and Oklahoma Citybased course designer Colton Craig, was in its second year. Regular readers may recall the site for last year’s inaugural contest was the eastern half of Maxwell’s Southern Hills CC in Tulsa, while this year Craig chose the southern section of the Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club in Nichols Hills where the Oklahoma legend built 18 holes for real estate pioneer Dr. G.A. Nichols. Maxwell’s partner Alister Mackenzie is thought to have lent his expertise on the routing without ever actually visiting the site, and it’s where former University of Oklahoma golfer Tripp Davis completed a renovation earlier this year. Hochstein said about the contest site, “Constrained, tight, and awkward. And there were plenty of pinch points – the range, the parking lot, the ever-winding creek, that effectively made it even tighter.” Craig echoes Hochstein’s sentiment, saying he chose the site primarily because of its idiosyncrasies. “The holes Maxwell squeezed into that area are some of the strangest, quirkiest holes he ever routed,” Craig said. “I know plenty of people who love them and think they highlight Maxwell’s skills, but I also knew how tricky people would find it. I was very interested to see how they’d handle the problems the site posed.” To judge this year’s competition, Craig called on Hochstein, a Cornell-educated, 16

Was mine any better this time? Last year I submitted what I thought was a reasonably good plan that satisfied all the criteria I regard as important – there were no parallel holes, each travelled in a different direction, there was a nice variety of lengths, and I covered the site. I didn’t expect to win, of course, but I thought it was a decent effort. Indeed, the judges -Andy Staples and Trey Kemp – were quite gracious in their remarks, saying the course had potential. But there were a couple of problems -major problems. First, the fairways were 150 yards wide in places. Width and playability are all the rage right now, but that was surely a little excessive. Second, the greens were 40,000-square feet or larger. Staples asked whether that was intentional. So was this year’s entry any better? Well, the greens and fairways were normal-size, and I was wary of overdoing the W W W.GOLFOKL AHOMA.ORG

creek holes after having looked at several Maxwell routings and seeing that while he didn’t ignore a creek, its appearances tended to be infrequent and subtle. I liked my finishing hole – a tribute to the Road Hole (17th) on the Old Course at St. Andrews. I looked at the site on Google Earth and discovered that two or three of my holes were very similar to those Maxwell had built. And I’d been able to squeeze 3,315 yards out of a site we know was very compact. Smyers liked that. “I think in terms of championship tests, so I believe you were right to look for length,” he said. “I tended to discard anything around 2,750 yards or less. And you had some really good holes. I liked the 2nd, and the three finishing holes in particular.” Hochstein also said it showed promise. “I saw your entry from last year and it was obviously a huge improvement on that,” Hochstein said. Encouraging to a point I suppose, but I’ve still much to learn clearly. And my admiration intensifies all the while for guys who do this while also having to factor in setting suns, prevailing winds, soil types, personnel, business models and schedules while dealing with owners whose money they’re spending.

Without getting into the minutiae of how each hole has changed over time (just Google Chris Clouser and Dornick Hills), let’s say Westheimer favored the design of Maxwell’s original greens and the more wide-open nature of a course that has become clogged with non-native trees. A characteristic that fell by the wayside during all the changes is that though holes were more wide open, the greens drifted to the creek or waste areas and were hard to hold. “When they messed up the golf course in 1985, it just really got into my craw,” Westheimer said. “I always made the comment that if I had the money, I would redo this golf course.” His father had secured an offer from Press Maxwell to renovate the bunkers and enlarge the

Appreciation for Maxwell as an equal of betterknown Golden Age architects such as Donald Ross, A.W. Tillinghast, Seth Raynor and his sometime partner Dr. Alister Mackenzie, among others, has never been more Ed Oden secure. Certain individuals deserve a lot of credit for elevating Maxwell’s status and providing a more definitive chronicle of his life and the scope of his work. One of those is Chris Clouser, who wrote “The Midwest Associate,” about Maxwell in 2006. For those who follow him, the gent behind the twitter account Perry Maxwell @DornickMaxwell provides a constant stream of fascinating research on Oklahoma’s most revered architect, who was an inductee in the Oklahoma Golf Hall of Fame’s inaugural class in 2014. To truly appreciate Maxwell’s life work and legacy, the ultimate destination is the exhaustively-researched website www. perrymaxwellarchive.com, written and researched by Ed Oden. Oden was born in Enid and moved to New Jersey at a young age when his father accepted a job as a professor at the University of New Jersey. Oden acquired his love of golf and architecture in the Garden State. He knew a bit about the Maxwell heritage when he returned to

David Jones on verge of completing quest to play every course in oklahoma

ome people like golf. Some love it. Then there is David Jones. “I call it a passion. My wife says it’s an obsession,” laughs Jones. “I love everything related to golf. But most of all I love being out there. It’s like you’re in a fantasy land. The game just takes you to another place.” The game has taken Jones, the superintendent at The Club at Indian Springs in Broken Arrow, to just about every place in Oklahoma in which it can be played. Since he played LaFortune Park in Tulsa for the first time at age 15 in 1987, Jones has tracked the courses he has played. Karsten Creek in Stillwater for his 100th course in the state. In December 2020, he drove seven hours to the panhandle to play Cimarron County Golf Course in Boise City for his 200th course in Oklahoma and 400th worldwide. When he got there a snow storm was on the way and the gate was locked, but Jones dropped his bag on the other side and played. As usual, he loved it. And when he was done, the course had been open so he could pay his fee and make another friend. Perfectly content to play by himself, Jones is accompanied often by his wife Erin, an Australian native of New South Wales, who enjoys the opportunity to travel the state and read a book out in nature while Jones plays on. As a superintendent, he loves to look at how others in his craft maintain their courses, often on a shoestring budget. He is particularly fond of some of the nine-hole courses he’s encountered in off-the-beaten-path locations such as Shidler, Kingston, Covington, Cordell and Frederick. “I have a fascination for nine-hole courses and there have been some really neat gems out there,” Jones said. “Buncombe Creek in Kingston (green fees $10) is a great layout with good elevation change. Rolling Meadows in Covington is a fantastic little nine-hole course run by W W W.GOLFOKL AHOMA.ORG

Jones estimates he’s played 25 courses that have since closed and another 22 closed before he got a chance to play them. Transformed! Wagner's passion, grit have made Boiling Springs Oklahoma's must-play sandbelt adventure

cross the country, golfers are paying premium rates and willing to venture thousands of miles to play fun and creative golf on natural sandbased layouts. From Sand Hills, Dismal River and other venues in Nebraska to Sand Valley in rural Wisconsin, these courses stir the souls of golfers who long for a links-type experience

without the time and trouble of seeking an ocean. Oklahoma may have its own natural attraction to promote to the traveling golf cognoscenti, thanks to the vision of several and the passion of one. Woodward in far western Oklahoma is home to Boiling Springs Golf Course. Readers may remember a Golf Oklahoma feature circa 2013 that trumpeted the restoration of the course under the guidance of Woodward

native John Dunn, but that was short lived. Nematodes attacked and mostly destroyed the new greens the following year. The course retreated but not Dunn’s vision, shared with architect Jeff Blume who worked with him on the first renovation. Now they just needed someone at the course on a daily basis who shared their inspired view of what Boiling Springs could become. In the spring of 2015, they found that man

It was divine intervention for all concerned. What he and his small crew have done since 2015 is remarkable, a herculean effort to remove over 100,000 invasive Eastern Red Cedar trees, slowly exposing the natural sandscapes. Irrigation patterns have been adjusted to keep the water in the fairways only, allowing the areas bordering the fairways to return to sand, native grasses and trees natural to the site. Think Pinehurst No. 2 since the renovation with more trees and elevation changes. “The sand is a prized feature in today’s modern golf and we put a lot of effort into creating those sandscapes on the edges to capitalize on the topography that was there,” Wagner said. “The rolling nature of the sand dunes is now emphasized. Everything we’ve done was to expose these unique topographical features. It’s like nothing in Oklahoma. The courses I could compare it to would be in the Melbourne sandbelt in Australia. “At our price point ($40), it’s just an un-

Blume gives him full credit for bringing his vision to life. “He has done an amazing job and is absolutely the perfect fit for that course needed,” Blume said. “My thought was always that in terms of quality of the site, Boiling Springs had the same potential as a Pinehurst, Dismal River, all these sand-based courses that have become destination resorts. If we could expose the sand we would have a bit of a poor man’s Prairie Dunes, but even different from that – very similar to Royal Melbourne in Australia as far as the character of the site. “Jeff has taken my initial vision and gone

FOR THE L♥VE OF G●LF 10 miles farther down the road than I ever thought possible. Every time I go look at it I’m just amazed at what he’s done. The way he’s opened up the natural contours and natural dunes, it’s got a beauty all it’s own.” The course was originally designed by Don Secrest and opened to rave reviews in 1979, but the invasion of the Red Cedars combined with the fluctuations in maintenance standards dependent on how the energy business in Woodward was faring led to ups and downs. Dunn, a Woodward native who operates a golf management company based in Oklahoma City, made a big commitment to bring it back after the devastation of the 2008 recession, but the improvements were short-lived. This time around all those involved believe they have a formula for long-term success. The painstaking removal of the cedars has been the key. “People would drive hours to play here then lose a ball on every hole,” Wagner said. “You get a dominant female and it produces 150 juve-

nile trees, gobbling up hundreds of square feet and it becomes a jungle environment. We’re not done fighting it and have many more to remove. The more we peel back, the more we accentuate the natural features, the better this place will be.” As the burn pit has smoldered for five years, the wonder of the original site, right next to Boiling Springs State Park, has emerged. “You go back to the Golden Age of golf course architecture and the sites were chosen where the land was the star of the show,” Wagner said. “Nothing was manufactured. I’ve played a lot of these destination courses and I don’t see any reason why Woodward can’t provide a similar experience. And for $45!” The sheer enthusiasm that Dunn, Blume and Wagner have for the project is catching. “God put me here for a reason,” Wagner said. “This is the moment we’ve been fighting for and it’s really exciting. What’s going on here is a community effort and everyone here wants to see Boiling Springs put back on the map.”

Save the lake distraction for a kayak tour with Clearly Tahoe for a fisheye view in a clear kayak to a depth of 60 feet. Guided eco and history narrations include celeb commentary. Hike along Lake Tahoe’s dramatic shore trails and have a picnic on the beach or dive into the refreshing water. Stay at Edgewood Golf Resort or a couple blocks away at Harvey’s Lake Tahoe, part of the Caesar’s casino collection on the South Lake’s main drag. One spectacular facet of Lake Tahoe is

Stay at River Ranch Lodge and Restaurant, a 1918 alpine retreat on the edge of the Truckee River where rafting revelers furiously paddle to the exit bank before reaching the rapids which lull guests to sleep at night. North Lake Tahoe is minutes away with shops and eateries, beach parks and trails leading to the marina. A gigantic bear sculpture looms with 200,000 pennies that form his fur. Warnings at River Ranch and stories of real bears abound at golf courses such as Old Brockway where nine holes with plenty of timberland and a swilcan bridge have more charm than a leprechaun. All things considered, I will explain in this text that touring Scotland for golf alone is a mistake. I recommend that, yes, you should play there, Troon to Carnoustie; St. Andrews to Castle Stuart; and play many times. But there is a far greater reason to visit this land of heather, whin, and Highlanders. The Scots. Go to Scotland for the Scots. Everything else your heart ever needed will fall into place. True, the same could be said for Ireland, England and Wales. But those are other stories. Following my first trip to Scotland, including Edinburgh, then on up to Dornoch, I told everyone this: you can walk into a pub, ask for a pint or say a few words in your American accent, and you have 10 new friends. They like us over there. Scottish hospitality is certainly not limited to us Yanks, and yes, even if your great, great granddaddy marched with Robert E. Lee, or Stonewall Jackson, or Jubilation T. Cornpone, you’re a Yank (not Yankee) in Scotland, where hospitality has depth, and where warm hearts beat above cold, cold, rocky ground. In Dornoch, and throughout Scotland, you see, there are no strangers. It’s as if there is a national law proclaiming it. W W W.GOLFOKL AHOMA.ORG

“You are not a stranger, just a friend we have yet to meet,” said RDGC General Manager Neil Hampton, himself a PGA professional, son of a PGA professional, and a memorable playing partner. “No other place in my 40 years or so (in golf) has made it so easy to become part of its fabric. If you feel uneasy on your first visit, then those nerves will soon be calmed as everyone is delighted to see you. ...’never been here before? You will love it! … cracking day for a game, hope you enjoy it. ... don’t forget to take a photo from the 7th tee – best view in golf! All these before you’ve even set foot in the clubhouse.” That quote rings true to my own first experience in Dornoch, where my old friend, Jim Carl, had been encouraging me to visit for 3 ½ decades. I first made it to Dornoch in 2004, intending to spend one night, play golf, and head on to Derby and places south. I WAS THERE FOR FIVE. As luck would have it on Day 1, I was alone, a single player, yet suddenly invited to join a threesome. The now foursome became a two-man best ball, a fight to the death ensuing for a winner’s prize of one pound sterling. As it happened, a retired Glasgow cop and a Canadian took our money, then spent it six times over for pints and drams in the clubhouse. Woody, my Canadian opponent, invited me to play the Carnegie Course at nearby Skibo – Skibo Castle, unbeknownst to me, being the most exclusive club in the world, or so I was told. Moments and experiences like this are why I tell people I’m the Forrest Gump of golf. Dornoch is loaded with delightful bed and breakfasts, where the ladies who own them all sound like Mrs. Doubtfire, and can cook accordingly. All of these are reasonably priced, but your wishes for the posh and pricey are also available at the Castle, or at settings near the RDGC clubhouse, all easy to find online, and all worthy of the prices they charge. Getting there is certainly an important part of the adventure. The easiest way is by air, to London, Glasgow, Dublin, then a local flight to Inverness, the next 40 miles via rental car or bus. My favorite, however, is a flight to London, then the Heathrow Express train to London’s Paddington Station. A cab from there will get you to King’s Cross Station, where trains leave for Edinburgh every half-hour. On this train, in first class or coach, you can enjoy the vastly changing English countryside for the coming 4 ½ hours, with food and beverage available on the East Coast Line. time a club employee in charge of international marketing, stared at me from across a table, his demeanor somewhat intense. “Alex, what is it?” I asked. “Bob,” he said. “You have friends here now. You have to come back.” Who wouldn’t come back? I have done so repeatedly for nigh on 17 years. I came back on a special trip two years ago, my friend Alex was getting married and I was by god going to be there. Alex was also dying of cancer. He passed 17 days after the wedding. I will be there again in 2021. “An experience to cherish,” said my friend, Don McManus, a 7- handicap who saw the place for the first time in 2018.

10 miles is Tain, 10 miles north is Golspie and another few miles north is Brora, all boasting true Scottish golf, and classic designs of James Braid and Old Tom Morris. Near Inverness, Castle Stuart opened in recent years, itself a beauty that’s been a regular host to the Scottish Open championship. Those first days playing Royal Dornoch, blind luck led to my presence among the locals in the clubhouse bar. As it happened, I was sitting alongside head pro Andrew Skinner, himself born and raised in Dornoch. Different lads were buying rounds. I insisted I would buy one, too. Andrew looked me in the eye. “No, Bob,” he said. “We’ll be buyin’ one for you.” I enjoyed a couple such evenings in the clubhouse on that first visit. With my travel plans taking me south, I was saying goodbye to all, and Alex Campbell, at that
