Chamber Team

to the autumn edition of 4Front the magazine for businesses in South Cheshire The Chamber has continued to be very busy over the last quarter and has been liaising with Members to help the Council set out a vision and strategy for the future development of Crewe and Nantwich for the next 20 years.

The last 20 years have seen a tremendous amount of economic growth for South Cheshire and it has become a victim of its own success, with the current infrastructure struggling to cope with the demands of the local community. The new town plan is driving economic growth through new employment and housing sites, and while this is generally accepted the infrastructure throughout South Cheshire needs to suitable for the next 20 years and beyond. This has been acknowledged by all stakeholders, and now is the opportunity to put it right. Setting the building blocks for the future has already started and the ‘All Change for Crewe’ strategy has seen early success with the confirmation of funding for the Crewe Green Link Road and work is due to start on the first phase of a £6m overhaul of Crewe Rail Station. The Chamber has been setting its own building blocks for the future with the introduction of a new website and portal for the local business community. This is an exciting and much needed development for the Chamber and will provide an excellent platform not only for the Chamber’s ability to liaise with Members much better, but maybe more importantly, the opportunity for local business people to communicate with each other. I really encourage you to visit the highly interactive portal at www.sccci.co.uk, which will provide you with the

The latest North West quarterly economic survey has just been released and it continues to show what an uncertain economic climate we find ourselves in, but indicators show that South Cheshire business community is performing well and this can be seen in the many success stories contained in this magazine. South Cheshire is fortunate to have a number of excellent companies that have a significant impact on our local community. One such company is Bentley Motors and at our recent Annual Business luncheon at Rookery Hall, attendees were given a fascinating insight into how they have achieved their current success from Geoff Dowding, Regional Sales Director for the UK, Asia, Pacific and Middle East and long may it continue. There are companies of all sizes enjoying success and the Chamber is encouraging all companies based in South Cheshire to celebrate their success by entering the Chamber’s Annual Business Awards (p.24). If you would like to enter your company or nominate another local company for an award please contact the Chamber. Many businesses enjoying success have taken advantage of the exporting opportunities both inside and outside Europe. International trade has a vital role to play in achieving economic growth and job creation and the Chamber continues to work hard with UK Trade and Investment to assist more businesses to get started with exporting, so if you’re interested in exporting please contact Jon Barnes at the Chamber who will be able to give you support and guidance. Finally, I hope you enjoy this edition of 4FRONT and I encourage all Members to submit articles for future magazines. Please do not hesitate to contact a member of the Chamber team who are here to assist you and your business.

What does the business community want South Cheshire to be like in 2030? This a very difficult question to answer and in the current economic climate it is very difficult to predict the needs of business for the next 5 years never mind the next 20 years, but it must be done.

Chamber members, The Wingate Centre, has launched a new website while introducing Catherine Moore (pictured) as its Community Support Manager.

PA4You telephone answering service has announced its three chosen charities for 2012/13.

Catherine said: “The centre has just launched a new look logo and a comprehensive new website that enables you to find out all the details and timetables for the gymnasium, register your interest in volunteering, donate on line through Just Giving, as well as all the information about its residential facilities.”

Catherine, who has a background in event management, is responsible for organising events, fundraising and building community relations. She added: “Why not put a team together for our Quiz Night on October 26 at Nantwich Cricket Club. Or if dancing is more your thing, there will be a Beatles Night at the Weavers Stadium, Nantwich Town FC on October 13 with dinner and dancing until 1pm. Please contact the centre for tickets or further information.

The Wingate Centre offers special needs schools, voluntary organisations and self-help groups the opportunity of enjoying short term residential breaks. Its site includes specialised accommodation and a fully fitted gym as well as disability-friendly outdoor, play and exercise facilities.

The recent addition of the Rieber Hall has allowed it to extend its range of facilities and it now offers local disability organisations, such as The Buzz Youth Activity Group (a club set up to support young people with disabilities), the opportunity to come along and just ‘hang out’ with their friends. The hall is available to hire – proceeds go to the charity.

Businesses ‘set up shop’ at Storage Boost A storage centre is becoming an important hub for Crewe’s entrepreneurial business minds with dozens of small businesses of all different sizes using its flexible storage, workshop and office units.

Nigel Basford of Jen models in his business base at Storage Boost

A recent addition to the centre’s business community is Palicomp an online concern creating custom-built PC's and repair hard drives. Finding that the premises they had were inflexible, costly and holding the business back, they decided to move to the Weston Centre. Director of Palicomp Nick Paliwoda said: “Storage Boost created us a brand new office and workshop tailored to our needs. Moving here was really easy and the facilities and staff are first class. We use the free meeting rooms frequently and the parcel receipt and dispatch service is invaluable.” Another new business to 'set up shop' is Jen Models. Owner Nigel Basford said: “Storage Boost has provided Jen Models with a great space to base our business. I have recently transferred into a bigger workshop unit from which I sell all kinds of model kits and accessories to visiting customers and online. "

For more information call 01270 250000 or visit www.storageboost.co.uk

The Crewe-based company is throwing its weight behind Wistaston Young Drama Group, a small organisation providing affordable access to drama based and confidence building skills.

PA4You is providing a joint promotion for them and Manchester Metropolitan University which is celebrating 100 years in Crewe. Along with other local premier businesses, such as Bentley Motors and Q Hotels, it has sponsored a large banner that will be flying from the roadside street lamp-posts for the next 12 months.

It is also backing Arch – a children’s charity offering support and advice to a range of people across Cheshire and Staffordshire. ARCH works with people who are in housing need, families in need of support, victims and perpetrators of domestic violence and people seeking to return to education, training and employment.

Its third charity is JUMP - a Warrington-based organisation supporting children with life-threatening health conditions, helping them to capture special memories with their loved ones. JUMP does this by providing a professional photography service to deliver photographs and film in a range of formats. PA4You is looking for its 2013/14 charities and welcome enquiries to HelenG@pa4you or call 01270 219500

Accountants deliver top class business challenge

A Dragon’s Den style business challenge launched in Shropshire by a firm of accountants is to be rolled out across South Cheshire.

Mercer & Co, which has offices in Nantwich and Market Drayton, led a challenge for students of Shrewsbury School. The project covered all aspects of starting a new business including product/service, market research, costing & pricing, sales & marketing, a cashflow forecast and a sound conclusion detailing why the project should win first prize.

Five groups of pupils were given four weeks to develop their business plans and then do battle for the ‘Mercer Business Award 2012’. Each group was given 10 minutes to present their project and a further fifteen minutes to answer questions. A panel of three business people including the MD of Mercer & Co, Steve Mercer, assessed the projects and their potential to survive and generate good profits eventually choosing a winner and a runner-up. Eazy Keyzee won with a digital lock for use in business and residential housing and Sweet Candy were runners-up with their innovative sweet shop. Shrewsbury School, one of the oldest schools in the country, has now included the business challenge into its curriculum and has asked the firm to deliver the Mercer Business award in 2013.

It’s thirsty work as college launches Costa outlet South Cheshire College has teamed up with popular high street chain Costa Coffee to launch a new café on its campus.

The Costa Coffee branded Reading Lounge is now officially open for staff and students and is the perfect place to take a well earned break at any time of the day.

A full range of drinks and snacks are available at the new outlet, on the ground floor of the College Library, which will deliver Costa’s ‘Proud to Serve’ brand.

The glass enclosed facility is away from the hustle and bustle of the main college but library goers can still enjoy peace and quiet outside the café.

There are four café outlets on the college campus, which serve everything from hot and cold snacks to hot and cold drinks, but this new venue gives staff and students an excellent alternative option.

Mandy Malam, Retail Operations Manager, said: “We are delighted to be linking up with a fantastic brand such as Costa Coffee. We’ve always had the Reading Lounge cafe on the ground floor of the Library, but the fact that it is now an enclosed space makes it a much more welcoming environment for people to take a break.”

Mornflake helps create a stir with new shirt deal

Mornflake has served up a new shirt sponsorship deal with Crewe Alexandra for the seventh year running.

Hopes are high it will prove a lucky seven for the Railwaymen after their thrilling Wembley triumph and promotion to League One last season.

Staff at Barringtons Chartered Accountants have been brimming over with ideas to help boost funds for a hospice. The firm, which has offices in Nantwich and Newcastle, has launched a top hat fundraising drive asking clients and colleagues to chip in to a collection ahead of the Douglas Macmillan Top Hat and Tiaras grand annual ball. Throughout the autumn and winter months the firm, and its sister company BCR which specialises in corporate recovery and insolvency, will be staging top hat whip-rounds and dress down days in a bid to put several hundred pounds in the Trentham hospice coffers. Managing director, Phil Wood, said: “My mother was only 51 when she died of a brain tumour. Thirty years on I have never forgotten just how kind the hospice staff were to her in her final days and to my family as we coped with the loss. BCR always takes a table at the charity ball and Barringtons offers a prize in the Grand Auction. This year we thought we would go one step further and do some fundraising as well. The top hats tie in with the theme and make it a bit of fun.”

Barringtons managing director Phil Wood (centre) with Vicky Ogden of Barringtons and Lucy Hill of BCR

The ball at Keele Hall on October 5 features a five course gourmet banquet, disco, casino and grand auction as well as a prize draw and midnight raid of the ‘goody’ cupboard. For more information on Barringtons or BCR call the Nantwich office on 01270 623821

Food Oscars have all the ingredients for success

Fans of dining out are being invited to nominate their favourite venue for an award as part of a scheme celebrating the best of South Cheshire’s eating experiences. The Dining Out Awards recognises food businesses that help promote Cheshire as a garden of good produce and offer customers great food in a warm and welcoming environment.

Organised by the Nantwich Food Festival, the scheme is seeking nominations in the categories of Cafes, Pubs with Food, Restaurants and Hotels.

Festival chairman Deborah Robb said: “The Dining Out Awards was launched in 2011 and proved a huge success with more than 4,000 people logging onto the festival website to register their votes. On the ball: Mornflake marketing assistant Nicola Smith meets star strikers AJ Leitch-Smith and Max Clayton

Marketing spokesman Richard Jones said: “We are very proud of our long association with the club and many of our employees were there to see their monumental victory at Wembley in May. “It has certainly helped to promote a feel-good factor about town and as a major employer in Crewe we are delighted to strengthen our partnership by renewing our sponsorship.”

Players this season will also be tucking into a new range of Mornflake granola and muesli products containing oat bran proven to help lower cholesterol.

An Audlem company played a ‘starring role’ in a new film shot in Crewe. Store marks a 10 year milestone Cartridge World's Crewe store, situated on Nantwich Road, is celebrating a decade’s trading in the town since officially opening its doors for the first time in July 2002. It estimates that it has served over 100,000 customers during this period.

Debbie Chesworth, Paul Trembath and Alan Mc Cubbine mark the 10th anniversary of Cartridge World in Crewe

Store owner, Alan McCubbine and staff members Debbie Chesworth and Paul Trembath marked the official milestone with a commemorative cake baked and decorated by Alan’s wife Sonja – and shared with customers who visited that day.

Alan said: “We’ve come a long way since we opened the franchise 10 years ago. We have established a loyal customer base and we remain committed to helping them with all their printing needs. We have gained a reputation in the community for great quality, great service and great prices.”

Team building tunes into success at studio

Team building is taking to the airwaves as part of a new initiative at Orchard Studios near Alsager.

Staff from visiting companies are invited to operate a commercial radio station for the day, presenting the programmes, news, weather and travel as well as creating catchy commercials.

Orchard spokesman John Newbould said: “So many team building events just don't work. They are competitive, macho or very gender biased.

“Many leave team members feeling vulnerable and exposed right from the start of the event. We were determined to create events where everyone works together, not against each other and become closer and genuinely more productive.”

Orchard Studios, a professional recording facility, becomes a radio studio for the events with production studio, interview rooms and main control deck.

Foodies set tills ringing across Nantwich

The best yet! That was how organisers of the Nantwich Food and Drink Festival described the weekend’s event after more than 30,000 visitors flocked to the town. Traders reaped the benefits of streets thronged with visitors from all over the country and far exceeded those hoped for by organisers of the not-for-profit organisation Nantwich Food and Drink Festival Ltd which stages the event for the benefit of the town.

Chairman Deborah Robb said: “The turn-out went beyond our wildest dreams. Last year the festival generated some £2m in income for the town. Judging by the response, we are confident that will be exceeded.” Main festival venues included a Gourmet Food Hall and Food Court on the Bowling Green car-park, a new Food Theatre on the town square, children’s activity centre behind the White Horse pub and the Civic Hall, renamed the Mornflake Food Hall for the festival. All attracted huge crowds who enjoyed samples of fine food and drink from around the world.

Shops, many of them Chamber members, did their bit staging tastings and fun food-themed activities.

Cheshire East Council and Mornflake breakfast foods were key sponsors of the weekend helping to fund the mammoth task of turning the town centre into a paradise for foodies. A range of local businesses were also involved, putting cash in the pot towards roadside advertising boards or offering their services in kind. Among them were Bentley, Barringtons Chartered Accountants, BCR corporate recovery and insolvency specialists, De Vere Academy of Hospitality, Temples Lettings, Frizells and Afford Scaffolding . ESTC provided security throughout the weekend, Suddenstrike offered labour for roadside boards and Delmar provided printing. Chronicle newspapers were media partners helping to publicise the festival alongside RedShift Radio and Nantwichbased communications company Pure PR.

Pyrotechnic experts John Malam and Alan Rhead (pictured) of Blitz Fireworks of Hightown in Crewe are staging Spooktacular, a spectacular bonfire and fireworks event at Dorfold Hall – home of the Nantwich Show staged by the society. The October 27 event is set to attract more than 10,000 people and features Coronation Street star Michelle Keegan, who plays barmaid Tina, lighting the bonfire. Support for the event has come from several Chamber members including Mornflake, Pure PR, Watts Financial, Martin & Co, Afford Scaffolding and Frizells haulage and plant hire. Mr Malam said: “Blitz has been involved in other Halloween firework events at Dorfold Park but this will be the biggest and best yet.

“Most importantly it is an all-weather event. Even heavy rain won’t stop our display and we will be using some of the most amazing and dazzlingly colourful fireworks available today.” Other attractions include a fun fair, Punch and Judy, licensed bar, fancy dress competition, VIP hospitality marquee, various catering stalls and competitions.

A free bus will also be laid on to Dorfold Park from Nantwich Civic Hall and Snowhill car-park.

Business booms as moles have field day in gardens

A small, but highly destructive garden pest has set phones ringing non-stop at a family business in Nantwich.

farmland by churning up and destroying crops.

Suddenstrike, which specialises in pest control, has been inundated with calls from householders plagued by moles. One of the wettest summers on record has seen a surge in mole numbers in gardens and now the firm has recruited a new molecatcher to help tackle the garden pest.

Suddenstrike mole-catcher David Lloyd and his new colleague Rob Benson cover large fields on quad bikes. Last year the firm, members of the Guild of British Molecatchers, covered 25,000 acres of land undertaking mole control in gardens, farms, commercial premises and parks.

Owner Steve Wilkinson said: “Moles cause utter devastation in gardens and farmer’s fields and as we head to harvest time, we know things are going to get even busier. “Heavy rainfall brings worms to the surface, presenting a plentiful food source so it’s been a field day for moles this summer. With more than 20 mole-related calls a week we needed to extend our workforce to handle the demand.” Travelling three miles an hour above ground, and twice as fast underground, the tiny digging machines wreak havoc on

www.southcheshirechamber.co.uk

The family business, the oldest in Nantwich, worked through the night and next day to install the new XL75 printing press, the first of its type in the area. Weighing nearly 40 tonnes and the size of a train, it attracted a large amount of interest from passers-by during the 12 hours it took getting the machine into the Oat Market premises.

The press arrived on the 1st anniversary of Johnsons launching its Fuji Photographic retail shop which specialises in high quality photographic prints from 6" x 4" to posters and banners which could cover the sides of buildings.

BENTLEY

Bentley leadership transition takes place in Crewe

Bentley announces new director of design

Signifying the official transfer of company leadership, Dr Wolfgang Schreiber has accepted the keys to one of the company’s most revered cars – W.O. Bentley’s own company car – from Mr Wolfgang Dürheimer.

Bentley Motors has announced Luc Donckerwolke (pictured) as its new Director of Design. Mr Donckerwolke succeeds Dirk van Braeckel who moves to Volkswagen Group design directed by Walter de Silva.

Mr Donckerwolke joins Bentley from his role as Head of Advanced Design for Volkswagen Group. He began his career as an exterior designer at Audi in 1992 and has subsequently worked for a range of other Volkswagen group brands including Lamborghini, SEAT and Skoda. His work at Lamborghini includes the awardwinning designs of the Murcielago and Gallardo.

www.southcheshirechamber.co.uk

Walter de Silva said: “Luc Donckerwolke brings a wealth of design talent to Bentley. His extensive experience makes him the ideal person to take forward Bentley’s future design language, at a time when the company has significant plans for new models.”

“I would like to thank Dirk van Braeckel for the significant contribution he has made to Bentley. He has overseen the evolution of the Bentley brand and the development of the new generation Continental family and the flagship Mulsanne. I look forward to him joining the team at Volkswagen Group design.”

For more information on Bentley Motors call 01270 255155 or visit www.bentleymotors.com

Dr Wolfgang Schreiber (54), an engineering graduate, joined the Volkswagen Group in 1984. He was made head of transmission and drivetrain development at the Volkswagen brand in 1996. His responsibility during that time included the development of transmission and drivetrain components for the Bentley Continental GT and Arnage. He moved to Bugatti Engineering in 2003 to take up the post of Technical Director and later Managing Director of the supersports car company over the next eight years. Schreiber became the member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles responsible for development in September 2006 and was additionally made Speaker for the Board of Management in February 2010.

Sarah’s champagne celebration at MMU Cheshire Record-breaking Paralympian joins Centenary gala

Record-breaking Paralympian Sarah Storey says she saved her first glass of champagne since her four gold medals at London 2012 to share with Dennis Dunn and the MMU Cheshire team.

Sarah, who won gold in the C5 Pursuit, the Time Trial C4-5 500m, the Individual Road Time Trial C5 and the Individual Road Race C4-5, trained three times a week in the Department for Exercise and Sport Science altitude chamber in the run up to the Games, which she said made an “incredible difference” to her athletic performance. She said: “The University has played such a huge role in my training this year so it seemed fitting to save my first glass of champagne to have with Dennis.” Sarah and her husband, fellow Paralympian Barney Storey, were attending a gala banquet to celebrate 100 years of education on the site of MMU Cheshire. The couple were given honorary doctorates by the faculty in 2009.

14

Dr Schreiber joined the Crewebased luxury car company on 1 September 2012 and, as part of his new leadership position as Chairman and Chief Executive, he claimed the keys to the 1930 8-litre saloon, still driven to this day. This car represented the pinnacle of founder W.O. Bentley’s engineering career, benchmark and class-leading, with an impressive top speed of over 100 mph and handcrafted luxury.

She said it was their first “evening off” since the end of the Games, which saw Sarah become the joint greatest Paralympian of all time, with her tally of eleven gold medals across the two disciplines of swimming and cycling equalling the number won by Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson and David Roberts.

Compared to the strict discipline of preparing for London 2012, Sarah said that celebrating her “new found responsibility as most decorated Paralympian” was a much more unstructured affair. “It’s been a whirlwind but a fantastic one and something you don’t prepare for in any way,” she said. “It’s a complete contrast to the Paralympics themselves which were so organised. We’re just maximising the opportunity to celebrate with as many people as possible. So many people have written to us and sent emails; it has been amazing to see the response.”

She added that both she and Barney hoped to continue their relationship with MMU Cheshire in the run-up to Rio 2016. “The University has been incredibly supportive and the links we have here with Dennis Dunn and John Brooks are very special to both Barney and I. “We haven’t really had chance to reflect on the next year – now is the time to enjoy the less structured part of the sport – but Rio is the end goal. You work in four year cycles so we will be putting together a plan for that.” For more information on the MMU Cheshire visit http://www.cheshire.mmu.ac.uk/

Oatbran products are a hit with slimmers

Crewe-based Mornflake has launched a new range of cereals containing oat bran which is proven to help lower cholesterol and keep you fuller longer making it the wonder food of choice for slimmers.

Marketing assistant Nicola Smith with the new products

Cereals, Oatbran The produced in stay-fresh resealable foil packs, come in a delicious range of varieties including Nuts and Seeds Granola, Cranberry and Nuts Muesli, Very Berry Muesli and Nuts and Honey Crisp – all created and sampled by the firm’s supertasters based in its kitchen laboratory on Gresty Road, Crewe.

Already they have proved a hit with supermarket shoppers across the country and people following various weight-loss diets.

He added: “Oat bran comes from oats but it is not the outer husk layer of the oat as some reports suggest. The husk is removed from the oats to reveal the ‘groat’ and it is the outer layer of the groat that contains the bran. Separating this layer off the groat is pretty tricky and a bit of a Mornflake secret.”

Mornflake has been using the power of pink to help raise cash and awareness of a charity dedicated to helping breast cancer sufferers. Sales of its pink-packaged breakfast products have staggering a raised Breast for £40,000 Cancer Care since they were launched three years ago. For every packet sold, the company has made a donation to the charity and although the packs were a limited edition, fundraising will go on with staff staging dress down days and collections. The company, which employs more than 100 women at its Gresty Road headquarters in Crewe, is planning a presentation to the charity. Marketing manager Richard Jones said: “People have been reaching for our pink packs at supermarkets up and down the country. Although they were a limited edition, the fundraising won’t stop there. The girls have plenty planned.” The company has since launched its Union Jack packs which have proved top-sellers too. SG WORLD

SG World Solutions Make Manchester Vote Count a Secure Success Faced with the logistics of registering 2,000 people to count votes and observe tallying for Manchester City Council’s 3 May elections, the local Electoral Services Unit knew where to turn: SG World, thwe Crewebased visitor management and health and safety solutions company with the experience and expertise to make the night a resounding success.

SG World provided specialist ElectIT software, wireless Blue Tooth technology and unique barcoded ID wristbands to process approximately 2000 participants at the City Council vote count. SG World’s innovative software solution made it possible to effectively register 900 attendees in the space of 20 minutes following doors opening at the Manchester Central Convention Complex.

The success of the Manchester election night was the culmination of months of planning and close working between SG World and council staff. SG World provided support and advice to ensure the post-Election vote count had the right attendee management system in place.

Security staff at Manchester Central were stationed with barcode scanners to capture data on attendees’ wristbands. Entry was controlled by a red-light, green-light system, a simple solution which masks the technology which was hard at work behind the scenes. The traffic lights allowed attendees to come and go as they pleased while maintaining security for the event without the bottleneck and potential confusion of referencing a manual check-list.

Martin Ridgeway, IT & Events Director for Manchester City Council, said: “SG World’s professional and expedient solution meant observers and vote counters spent a minimum of time waiting in queues for security checks and were able to get right to the business of serving the public interest.”

SG World are now looking forward to deploying their technology and experience to manage visitors at the vote count for the National Police Elections in November. They intend to apply the knowledge gained from their recent successes to ensure that the strategy and planning for the event comes together once again to ensure an efficient and secure visitor management system to the benefit of everyone involved. The flexible configuration behind ElectIT means SG World can provide as many, or as little, support services required behind the core software, ranging from the full service in Manchester to an ‘out-of-the-box’ model installed and set up over the phone.

A spokesman said: “We have been producing oat bran in a sprinkle container for quite some time but these new products contain it in a bowl of breakfast cereal and consumers are just loving them. They have quickly become best-sellers and have been getting some excellent press in food magazines up and down the country.” Exactly how Mornflake produces the oat bran remains a family secret.

Guests check in to hotel open day

Best Western Manor Hotel in House Alsager held an Open Day recently to celebrate the completion of its £250,000 summer refurbishment.

The day gave members of the public, local businesses and representatives from both local and regional tourism, business and government bodies the chance to tour the hotel and see the impressive results for themselves. The refurbishment has transformed the bedrooms in the hotel which was originally created and extended around a 17th century farmhouse.

Visitors received a tour of the new look bedrooms and bathrooms, whilst the hotel chefs prepared refreshments for people attending throughout the day. Improved facilities to all of the guest accommodation includes the addition of Freeview flat screen televisions with a guest information channel showing weather and local road traffic feeds, and iPhone/iPad/iPod docking stations to enable guests to easily charge their devices.

General manager Jayne Chapman said: “This is an exciting time for the hotel and its owners. A lot of thought and planning went into the refurbishment project and the Open Day was a great way to show the hotel off to local people and local businesses. The addition of a sauna in the pool area will be an added benefit to guests staying with us and to our swimming pool membership.”

Crewe Alexandra unveils star signing Crewe Alexandra has unveiled its latest star signing.

The League One football club has scored a coup by netting Crewebased Absolute Recruitment to become a stand sponsor in a twoyear deal. Managing director Absolute (L-R) Fiona Welch, Jessica Marshall said: “Absolute Jessica Marshall, Dan Marshall and John Bowler Recruitment has built a great reputation for the quality of recruitment support we deliver to both clients and candidates in the region and unveiling the new name of the stand was a proud moment for us.”

The signage was installed ahead of the club’s home game against Leyton Orient. She says it is important that the local business community gets behind the Alex – not just in support of the first team, but also because of all the grassroots work the club does.

“Crewe Alexandra has a great reputation for developing and nurturing talented individuals and we hope that our sponsorship goes some way to continuing that legacy as it’s one that the whole town should be rightly proud of.”

Buying a business - 7 deadly deal-breakers

The present economic climate is providing opportunities for well placed, pro-active businesses to expand through acquisition. Corporate solicitor, Anne Scheland at Beswicks Solicitors in Stoke on Trent, highlights the seven deadly deal-breakers that can bring the purchase of a target business to a grinding halt.

Employees - If you buy a company as a going concern or via an asset purchase, you must take on the employees on their existing contract terms, so ensure that you clearly understand what this entails. Key staff - Will you be able to tie in key staff or management on special terms?

Pensions - You may have to take over the target company’s existing pension arrangements, which you should ensure are fully funded, or offer prescribed pension arrangements to transferring employees.

Intellectual property rights - A brand or patent may be the most valuable asset of the target business. Your due diligence enquiries will need to check that the target business owns the rights, has them adequately protected and is free to transfer the rights to you.

Environmental issues - You could face huge liabilities, possibly including criminal liability, if you buy contaminated land or a company that caused or allowed contamination.

Shared assets - If you are buying a business that is part of a group, it may share assets such as computer systems, property and insurance policies with other group members.

Consents and third party approvals - The transaction may require approval from your business’ shareholders or the target business’ shareholders. You may need the approval of third parties, such as an industry regulator, or you may require approval from competition authorities. For more information call Anne Scheland or Simon Woodings at Beswicks on 01782 205 000

Alison Bowler, the club’s business operations manager, said: “Everyone is delighted that Absolute Recruitment has become a major partner of Crewe Alexandra by agreeing to sponsor the popular Gresty Road End Stand. We are sure the partnership will benefit both parties in the local community.”

We’re well in to Autumn; the summer and holidays are behind us and we’re all looking forward to the new term through to Christmas. A ‘school report’ might be a good way of thinking about the prospects for business and the economy. History We’re still surrounded by evidence of recent over-indulgence; the day of debt reckoning arrived five long years ago, with the collapse of Northern Rock in September 2007. There aren’t many ways of getting rid of debts; let inflation rip (like the 1970’s), which makes debts smaller in real terms; let companies and banks go bust, which means the owners of debt lose out; or just pay it all back over decades. Unfortunately for taxpayers and the economy, the government chose the third option. Geography Climate change appears to be making calm conditions more unsettled. Our friends on the continent are still struggling with stormy weather, creating a lack of confidence and demand in the UK’s biggest export market. The ongoing risk of a disorderly breakup of the Euro makes UK banks fearful of foreign default, deterring domestic lending. Chemistry Miss Merkel, the science mistress, is still having difficulty with immiscible fluids; German prudence and hard work just won’t mix with Greek profligacy and laziness. Taxpayers in Germany, Finland and the Netherlands are revolting.

Art & Design Modern ‘money printing’ – Quantitative Easing – hasn’t resulted in lots of lovely new banknotes to admire. The Bank of England creates money electronically these days, then buys government debt back from the banks in the hope that they will lend the cash they receive in the wider economy. With anaemic growth and low domestic inflation, it makes you wonder where the £375 billion has gone. Even the deputy governor of the Bank of England think’s the policy has ‘lost its bite’. Physics Despite the discovery of the Higgs Boson in the summer the effects of the last decade’s anti-gravity experiment (ever increasing spending supported by ever inflating debt) still loom large over the economy. Physical education The inspiration of the Olympics and Paralympics certainly created a spectacle, and a reminder that a great performance depends on an awful lot of very hard work and a good dose of luck – rather like running a business.

Crewe school’s call for business support Oakefield Primary and Nursery School is looking to recruit a member of the business community to widen the skill base of its Governing Body.

The Holland Street school has come through a difficult time. After being placed in Special Measures by OFSTED in 2011, it has achieved a remarkable turn round and has come out of the category with the help of a new Executive Head.

It is growing and an extension is being built to eventually expand the school to 420 pupils.

A spokesman said: “There is a higher than the average number of special needs children and many of our children are from vulnerable families. They and their families receive vital support from the school.

TV Dragon agrees landmark deal with solicitors Hamilton Bradshaw, James Caan’s Private Equity company, has announced a landmark agreement with the equity partners of Knights Solicitors to invest capital subject to approval from the Solicitors Regulation Authority – a deal which is unique in the sector.

www.southcheshirechamber.co.uk

James Caan, CEO Hamilton Bradshaw and David Beech, Managing Partner

It’s the first private investment into a commercial law firm and Knights now aims to position itself in the top 100 commercial law firms in the UK within three years.

Knights, one of the largest law firms outside Manchester and Birmingham, was established in 1759 and has 23 partners and 150 staff operating from offices in Staffordshire, Cheshire and Gloucestershire. In 1996 the firm made an important and strategic move away from the high street to specialise in commercial work and wealth management.

“Governors need to take strategic decisions that support the head and staff to move the school towards the goal of an Outstanding OFSTED category in the next few years. They will look at options regarding the status of the school and above all secure a good start in life for the children of Crewe.”

The school is looking for a governor with a business background, good analytical skills, forward looking and a strong desire to help the next generation. Anyone who can help is asked to email Molly Stone, Chair of Governors at mollystone@btopenworld.com

David Beech who has been leading the business since October 2011, will be developing the firm’s strategy for growth. Once the SRA have approved HB’s investment, James Caan will join the board.

James Caan, CEO of Hamilton Bradshaw, said: “Knights is an excellent firm which has proven management and financial backing to scale its business and position itself in the top 100 UK law firms. I am very focused on people-based businesses and Knights stood out as a business with a highly talented team.

“Some of its clients have been with the firm for generations and that is testament to a business which understands the importance of exceptional customer service.”

David commented: “What stood out about HB was the fact that they don’t just bring capital, they also bring an incredibly talented team on board who will support our business to achieve its ambition to become a leading regional law firm and cost solution to London.” For more information on Knights branches visit www.knightsllp.co.uk or call 01782 619225

Growing insurance group is on the move

And the business is still expanding - next year it is set to provide over £24 million worth of insurance policies on behalf of personal and business insurance clients.

MD Tim Crighton said: “We outgrew our old head office and needed bigger premises to house our increasing staff. It had 60 staff and these new premises allow us to grow to 100 employees in the next couple of years.”

County Insurance of Crewe is celebrating a growth in business and staff numbers with a move to new premises.

The business has relocated to County House (pictured) on Fourth Avenue - an 8,500 square foot building housing up to 100 people, ranging from the personal insurance department, professional driver teams (taxi, courier, haulage) and the business insurance department.

He added: “All of our insurance departments are growing, in particular the business and fleet insurance teams, and these new premises are perfect for future expansion.”

County Insurance was previously based on Crewe Business Park. The new address and contact details are: County House, Fourth Avenue, Crewe, CW1 6XL Tel 0800 781 8608

The Chamber has welcomed a new member to its team - Euan Stubbs.

Paul Colman, Acting Chief Executive, said: “On behalf of the South Cheshire Chamber I would like to welcome our latest edition to the team.

“Euan has taken the role of business development manager and with a vast amount of experience in both the public and private sectors in terms of events, magazines and sales we hope that his addition to our team will bring a new dynamic to the Chamber.

Euan is already making some exciting steps

Bentley factory tour delights guests

The tour ended with a showcase of Bentley's car models – from the earliest to the latest, with an opportunity to experience the luxury and excellence of the newest car’s interiors.

At the end of the factory tour we were taken in to a room with the oldest Bentley around, and we were allowed to sit in one of the newer models. I had a great time and would definitely recommend it and do it again.” The event was a huge success and sold out very quickly.

The Chamber would like to thank Bentley Motors for providing this opportunity to Chamber members. The event itself was organised by Rachel Bradshaw our ‘A’ Team apprentice from Cheshire East Council as part of her Apprenticeship.

Given the popularity of the event we will be looking to repeat it again in early 2013. For more information on Bentley Motors call 01270 255155 or visit www.bentleymotors.com

“I hope to bring a new dimension to the team and help drive the Chamber forward.”

Funding available for local businesses

South Cheshire Chamber is seeking to increase the amount of lending available to local businesses through the South Cheshire Chamber Business Fund. The South Cheshire Chamber Business Fund comprises two separate funding strands, designed to assist with both long and short-term business finance. The following loans are currently available through this scheme: ·

Working Capital Loan The Working Capital Loan provides short-term support up to a maximum of £10,000 to companies with temporary working capital problems. These loans are normally unsecured and repayable over a maximum of two years, at a fixed rate of 12% interest. Interest on the loan is accrued and paid at the end of the period.

·

Capital Loan This provides for longer-term projects. These loans are repayable over a maximum of five years at a fixed rate of interest of 12%. Security may be required.

Our very own Erika Floodgate, apprentice to Paul Colman acting Chief Executive was at the event and commented “I thoroughly enjoyed the Bentley Motors tour; it was interesting, informative and insightful. Our tour guide was friendly and everyone looked like they were genuinely enjoying the experience.

The factory tour showed the Bentleys at different stages of completion, and it was obvious just how much work goes into them, because the attention to detail was amazing.

Euan explained his reasons for joining the team. He said: “Working with a forward-thinking group of individuals and hearing some of the ideas that the Chamber has really excites me for the future and I look forward to dealing with all the current and future members here in South Cheshire.

Loans of varying amounts are provided, however, the maximum loan is £25,000. The exact amount payable will be determined according to demonstrated needs, as deemed eligible by SCCCI in the initial stages. ·

Administration Fees A fee of 1% (plus VAT) is payable together with a 1% monitoring fee (plus VAT). SCCCI cannot be the main funder of a business project and for both of the funds described above, only 50% of the eligible expenditure can be provided. The loans are designed to aid business projects which are likely to create jobs and assist with the regeneration of the local economy in the former Crewe and Nantwich Borough, now part of Cheshire East Council.

30 business people attended the tour of Bentley Motors on 20th September. Mike Hawes of Bentley Motors gave an overview of the company, including history and future market development. The tour provided an interesting and informative insight into the manufacturing process at one of the leading luxury car manufacturer.

SkillShare

SkillShare gathers new support for local charities Crewe company, Design Office, has helped two worthwhile charities through Cheshire’s new SkillShare initiative.

The SkillShare initiative, set up in conjunction with the South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce and Community & Voluntary Services (CVS) Cheshire East, promotes local, skilled volunteering by matching local business people and other professionals with suitable charities and community groups that require their services. Design Office, a creative design agency and printers, approached Skillshare to offer its support. SkillShare arranged for the company to help Crewe Women’s Aid, a charity supporting people affected by domestic abuse, with marketing advice and assistance in the re-branding of their logo and website.

Business Testimonials

It then went on to work with another local organisation in need of creative assistance – Musical Mayhem dance group. The dance group was set up purely to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis unit at Wythenshawe Hospital and Macmillan Cancer Centre. Design Office printed the programmes and pvc banners after offering to part sponsor their upcoming event at Crewe Lyceum Theatre. SkillShare co-founder Mark Ellis said: “This is a great example as to how the SkillShare initiative can work by matching charities with local business people who are willing and able to volunteer their expertise and support.” Any businesses interested in offering their time and expertise to support the SkillShare initiative, or any local voluntary and community groups who would benefit from skilled support should email Karen.brady@cheshireskillshare.org.uk

UK Fuels, Bill Holmes Managing Director: If there had been an organisation like SkillShare a few years ago we would have got involved with the local community much earlier. Now that we know about it we have been pleased to second Karen as we are sure that there are lots of other businesses that would like to support the local voluntary organisations

www.southcheshirechamber.co.uk

Design Office, Kevin Edge: In my experience there are lots of businesses doing good work with charities. SkillShare allows this process to be formulised and marketed highlighting to the wider community the good work being carried out. In turn I would hope this inspires other businesses to get involved and make a real difference in their local community Waverly Limited, Malcolm Gresty, MD, Business Development Consultancy: Working alongside Age UK Cheshire has been extremely valuable in the development of my business. The transfer of skills and working practices when helping develop a Delivery Plan with prioritised SMART objectives has strengthened my experience for dealing with other businesses. I hope this encourages other private sector organisations to get involved with SkillShare for mutual benefit KPI Recruitment, Liz Howarth: KPI Recruiting is proud to be assisting Crewe Women’s Aid under the Skillshare initiative. The team at KPI is always looking for ways to support local businesses and charities. We feel it is important to support our local area in any way we can and it is an opportunity to provide further job satisfaction to our employees. SkillShare is such a fantastic idea, it’s simple and it works well. It has been a very smooth process from initially offering our services and we have been well matched to the organization we are helping. The support we provide has a minimal impact on our business while providing invaluable support to Crewe Women’s Aid - long may it continue

Voluntary Organisation Testimonials

YMCA, Richard Holmes, Development Manager: It’s been a fascinating and fruitful journey to work with SkillShare; we have benefitted greatly from the experience and ideas that different companies have brought

RedShift Radio, Liz Southall: It is very apparent that community organisations and charities need to think and behave like a business in order to be successful. Gone are the days when we can go cap-in-hand for donations and support from businesses without offering anything in return. SkillShare is a great way for charities to benefit from vital business advice and support without the financial implication to the business. At RedShift we benefit from SkillShare on both sides of the fence; we can offer free RedShift Hub networking and social media training to charities whilst we can also draw on the valuable support of people like Pure PR Solutions, MC Signs and The Design Office by offering them advertising in return for their skills to help us. Wishing Well, Hilary Hamilton: Through our involvement with SkillShare we now have a much more professional approach to our business. The advice and support that we have been fortunate enough to receive has allowed us to streamline our services and improve systems and procedures immensely.

22

Age UK Cheshire, Jan Hutflesz: Waverly Limited has been a big help in assisting with the focus and bringing together our organisation’s Business & Marketing Implementation Plan. Having an external viewpoint from the private sector provided an invaluable sounding board for the direction and realistic achievements we can make over the life time of this plan

Let us help you expand into foreign markets Businesses looking to grow by trading overseas are being invited to hear how other local companies have succeeded at an Export Club event to be staged by the South Cheshire Chamber.

Peer to Peer, a breakfast event being held at Hunters Lodge in Crewe on October 18, offers business people a chance to hear at first hand the pitfalls and advantages of exporting services and products overseas from companies which are already reaping the benefits of foreign markets. Daniel Ashley from UKTI France addresses the Export Club’s Effective Exporting event

It takes place from 8.30am to noon and is the latest in a series of events staged by the Chamber to help local companies break into this potentially lucrative area. On September 6, the Chamber hosted Effective Exporting which was typically well attended, with a large cross-section of local businesses there to enjoy a delicious breakfast. After delegates had enjoyed an hour’s networking, Daniel Ashley from UKTI France took to the stage.

www.southcheshirechamber.co.uk

Daniel has been with UKTI France for sometime and he delivered much valuable advice to all attendees - covering the pros and cons of doing business in France and tips on how to approach the French market. He also gave insights into the key opportunities for UK companies.

26

Although Daniel’s talk was centred round the French market, some of the key points could translate to any foreign country, informing guests of the nuances to look out for before taking business abroad. After a short break and more networking, Dave O’Gara, International Trade Development Officer at HMRC went on to describe Authorised Economic Operator Status (AEO). AEO is taking off in the EU, but so far the UK has not yet embraced it. Dave explained that AEO is a certified standard that businesses involved in international trade can apply for and if achieved by your business, it signifies to your trading partners and to customs authorities in all member states that you are trustworthy and compliant, thus simplifying the export process.

Jon Barnes (centre) with Daniel Ashley and Dave O’Gara

Chamber International Trade Co-ordinator Jon Barnes said: “A varied group of delegates has formed for the Export Club and each event goes from strength to strength, the relaxed atmosphere encourages networking and the asking of questions throughout each presentation.” Other Export Club dates include November 22, January 31 and February 28.

Crewe based Jones Sheridan Financial Consulting Limited has been working with local businesses and their employees for more than 30 years and has built a reputation locally for offering top quality advice whilst delivering an exceptional service. The world of financial services is changing on December 31st this year. The Financial Services Authority (FSA) is introducing some new legislation which will change both how financial advisers describe their services and the way in which clients pay for them and no doubt over the next few months you're going to read and hear a lot about these changes. The Retail Distribution Review or RDR as it's commonly known will see financial advisers either giving 'independent' or 'restricted' advice after December 2012. We are fully prepared for the requirements of the RDR and have long believed in giving holistic independent advice rather than focussing on product sales, which has led to some of the proposed changes. By introducing the changes, we feel the industry as a whole will be improved and clients will benefit from the greater transparency that the changes will be bring.

If it's important to you that you continue to receive 'independent' as opposed to 'restricted' advice, we've suggested three questions you should be asking your adviser now:

1) Do you plan to offer independent or restricted advice after December, 31st 2012? 2) Do you already have the higher qualifications you'll need to continue giving independent advice? If not, when do you expect to achieve them? 3) Could you explain to me how I'll pay you from 2013 – and how will this be different from the way I pay you now?

Businesses gain an insight into Bentley’s success

More than 70 businesses were represented at the South Cheshire Chamber’s Business Luncheon and AGM at Rookery Hall Hotel and Spa where guests were given an insight into Bentley’s phenomenal growth abroad. Guest speaker Geoff Dowding, regional sales director for the UK, Asia, Pacific and Middle East, told how continued investment in the brand and launch of new models had helped sales leap by 30% in a year.

China, now one of the company’s biggest customers, accounted for much of its growth and eyes were now turning to other emerging economies including Vietnam, Cambodia and Brazil which had huge potential for the future. He said: “Bentley remains a symbol of wealth and success. There are 11 million people in the world right now who can afford a luxury motor car and that’s the market we look to tap into.”

The company, which employs more than 4,000 people, had survived a major dip in sales during 2009 by investing in new models which has borne fruit in terms of the top-selling Continental GT, Continental GTC and Mulsanne. Now the Company is focused on developing proposals for a new Bentley, an ultra-luxury but high performance SUV (sport utility vehicle) - a type of vehicle already driven by many Bentley owners.

Bentley head of Government Affairs Mike Hawes, Chamber chairman John Dunning, Bentley regional sales director Geoff Dowding and Chamber acting chief executive Paul Colman at the Business Luncheon and AGM at Rookery Hall, Nantwich

www.southcheshirechamber.co.uk

Acting Chief Executive Paul Colman commented: “Bentley Motors is a fantastic company and a great asset for South Cheshire. It was a real privilege to be given an insight into why and how Bentley has succeeded and we wish them well with their new SUV project.” The Chamber next hosts a networking lunch at the White Lion pub at Weston on October 5 and its annual golf tournament at Crewe Golf Club on October 9. Thanks to Rookery Hall, RedShift Media, Here to There Logistics, Aboveline Design, i2i photography and Pure PR Solutions for their support with the event.

Need a loan? The Chamber can help An international survey published in September showed that the biggest obstacle facing businesses currently was the lack of finance to fund new projects. Now I don’t suppose that the only business contacted was Liverpool Football Club but I do suspect that this view is one held by many local businesses here in Crewe and Nantwich.

At the Chamber we continue to have funds available for businesses and whilst we have seen a little more activity in recent weeks there still remains significant capacity to do more. I do suspect that a good number of people have been diverted by the magnificent spectacle of the Olympics and the Paralympics, but with this behind us, then it may be time to pick up where those heroes left off and springboard off from the feel-good factor the Games generated. I, myself, am in training for a distance race double in Rio albeit my first step of mastering the making an ‘M’ sign of my head is proving more difficult than I thought. If you have your own business and see a need for funding, either to protect what you have currently, or to expand into new areas, then I would encourage you to pick up the phone

and talk to us at the Chamber and see what we can do.

Up to £10,000 can be provided for short term working capital requirements – usually repayable over a maximum 2 year period, with longer term projects covering requirements up to £25,000 being funded over a period extending to 5 years. All that we stipulate is that the Business Loans Executive Richard Weilding Chamber is not the main funder for the project covered by the request, where we limit our support to a maximum of 50% of the total costs. Funding is designed to aid businesses to maintain or create jobs and assist in the regeneration of the local economy in Crewe and Nantwich. Incidentally, I have moved on with my training and abandoned the Mo sign and gone for the Usain Bolt victory pose. Unfortunately my back has locked and I am currently waiting for the chiropractor to arrive. Rio seems a long way off !

Phase one will include a new surface-level car park with 240 spaces and 11 disabled bays; new pedestrian access from Weston Road; improved facilities for taxis; a new area for people to pick up and drop off family and friends; refurbishment of the existing subway to platforms; a new area for servicing vehicles to access the station; and a new commercial development site to provide a business opportunity next to the station. It has been made possible after a successful bid by Cheshire East Council, supported by Network Rail, for £6.177m from the Government’s £100m fund, called the Station Commercial Project Facility.

On track to a brighter future

The Chamber has welcomed news of a major step forward in the All Change for Crewe strategy – a £6m overhaul of Crewe Rail Station. Acting chief executive Paul Colman said: “Crewe is one of the most well connected stations in the country and should have a station that reflects that. A revitalised rail hub is vital to boosting the town’s economy and its appeal to businesses. “The station overhaul has been talked about for many years and has now become a reality. It is great news for Crewe and indeed the whole of South Cheshire.”

The scheme is central to ambitious plans to regenerate the town centre and surrounding area, including the rail station as part of the ‘All Change for Crewe’ vision.

Crewe and Nantwich MP Edward Timpson said: “I am delighted that All Change for Crewe is bringing about concrete results for the people of Crewe and Nantwich. Together with the funding for the Crewe Green Link Road we also managed to secure, we will start to see the much-needed infrastructure improvements to our local transport network realised.” All Change for Crewe Partnership Board chairman John Lea, who is managing director of Mornflake Oats, said: “This long-overdue improvement to the major gateway into the town of Crewe is a very exciting development and will not only be of benefit to us all but will help to showcase the very best that Cheshire has to offer.” For further information about All Change for Crewe, visit www.cheshireeast.gov.uk/crewerail

Cheshire East Council has appointed developer Mansell to do the work, which is due to start before Christmas and be completed by spring 2014.

Councillor Jamie Macrae, CEC Cabinet member in charge of prosperity and economic regeneration, said: “There is still a lot of hard work to be done – and we will not be complacent – but winning funding and now starting this work is a massive vote of confidence in the station, the town and wider regeneration scheme.”
