Welcome Welcome to the Summer edition of the Chamber’s magazine Since the last magazine, we now have a new Member of Parliament for Crewe & Nantwich. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Laura Smith on her victory and I look forward to working with her to maximise the potential of this area and deliver the major projects needed including HS2 and the development of the town centre. I would also like to thank Edward Timpson for all his efforts throughout his tenure. He worked extremely hard and has set strong foundations for the economic growth of this area which we will all benefit from in the future. As we know the potential of growth for this area is tremendous, but we must create the right environment for us all to achieve success. At our recent Annual Dinner (page 13) we were inspired and entertained by ex. World record holder Steve Cram, who described how he had reached the top of his sport. He explained that while he clearly had the right genetic make up for middle distance running, he only realised his potential because he was able to train in the right conditions and environment necessary to achieve his success. The lesson to learn is that we all have a talent, whether as people or businesses, however, we can only realise our potential if the right environment is created. Therefore to allow our businesses to prosper we must all work together to make sure suitable conditions are created, including transport network, infrastructure, education, and business support. On behalf of the business community, the Chamber continues to lobby and play its part in pushing for improvements in all these areas.

As you will see throughout this magazine the Chamber has been extremely active providing local businesses with opportunities to grow their companies. It’s tremendous to see so many new businesses joining the Chamber (pages 4 & 5) who will receive support and the opportunity to meet new contacts and customers. Our events programme creates excellent networking opportunities and continues to grow (page 6) providing various types of events to suit different types of businesses. The international trade support (page 23) offered to businesses continues to develop and the opportunity for businesses to export their goods abroad with the support of the Chamber has never been better. The international trade forums provide opportunities to hear from experts and businesses who have been successful through exporting and network. If your company would like to find out more please don’t hesitate to contact the team who will be more than happy to explain how you can benefit. Finally, I would like to congratulate Lauren Readdin on her ‘Exceptional Enterprise and Initiative’ award that she received from South Cheshire College (page 10). It is well deserved and she makes an excellent contribution to the team. I hope you enjoy this magazine and if your company has good news to share or you’d like to take advantage of the advertising opportunities, please do not hesitate to contact Jacqui at the Chamber. May I take this opportunity to wish your business well in the future.

Crewe Hub Station confidence grows as HS2 is included Queen’s Speech overlook the many practical issues that businesses are facing at home such as poor infrastructure, skills shortages and rising costs. The British Chambers of Commerce is seeking to learn more about what those local issues are by holding a series of regional meetings with Chamber Presidents and Chief Executives and Paul Colman and I recently attended a meeting in Manchester at which we emphasised the importance to South Cheshire of following through on the delivery of HS2, and on getting more clarity on the plethora of economic strategies that are being developed in our sub-region.

John Dunning, South Cheshire Chamber President

At a time when business is crying out for more stability, the recent election result has unfortunately created more uncertainty.

It was encouraging therefore to see that the legislative process for HS2 was included in the Queens Speech which will give confidence to the continuing efforts to press for the Hub Station at Crewe.

What Business wants to see is a stable administration that can manage the economy properly and achieve the best possible Brexit deal.

The Chamber’s Business Council is continuing to discuss its ideas on local economic strategy but is still awaiting the opportunity to formally input into the Crewe Master Planning process.

Although the Brexit negotiation itself, is, of course, of great importance to business, it is vital that the Government does not

In the meantime, there have been a couple of events which have given me particular pleasure.

www.southcheshirechamber.co.uk

Firstly, I was pleased to see the reintroduction of the Chambers Annual Dinner - after a few years absence. The Annual Dinner is an important high profile event and I hope that it will now, once again, become a firm fixture in our calendar of events. Secondly, I was delighted to attend the ground-breaking ceremony for the new Radius office building at Crewe Business Park. Not only is it great to see one of our most successful companies deciding to firmly put down its global roots in Crewe, but this project now virtually completes the entire development of the Business Park with which I have a long and proud association. Finally, I would like to add my congratulations to Laura Smith on her election as MP for Crewe and Nantwich and to thank Edward Timpson for all the help and support that he has given to the Chamber over the years. Speed networking a hit at landmark hotel Now speed networking is to become a regular feature on the Chamber calendar after proving a big success. The next event will take place at Rookery Hall, Nantwich on October 16. Crewe Arms Hotel Sales Manager Andrew Plimmer said: “We joined the Chamber a month ago and have found it to be very beneficial. We are keen to show people the fantastic changes that have taken place at this landmark hotel so it was great to be the venue for this new event and engage with a large group of business people.” Delegates included representatives from a wide range of businesses including solicitors, accountants, marketing specialists, insurers, photographers, physiotherapists and charity representatives.

Making business contacts was easy at the fun and informal speed networking event

South Cheshire Chamber members turned out in force to a new networking event with a difference. Speed networking was staged at the Crewe Arms Hotel, one of the latest iconic businesses to join the Chamber and benefit from its profile-raising opportunities. The interactive event, led by coach Mike Grocott of Intercog, saw groups of businesses gather round tables to share information. After five minutes they moved on to the next to make new contacts. Chamber Events Coordinator Daryl Williams said: “Networking can be one of the most powerful and productive activities an individual can do to develop business opportunities. “The Chamber offers many networking opportunities throughout the year but we appreciate it can sometimes be a little daunting walking into a room of strangers hoping to make new contacts. “This event provided delegates with a structured opportunity to meet as many people as possible in a fun and informal way.”

Des Machin, Business Development Manager at Barringtons Chartered Accountants, said: “We’re long-standing Chamber members and found speed networking a great way to engage.” For more information on joining the South Cheshire Chamber or booking on to any events call 01270 504700 or visit www.sccci.co.uk

Chamber puts employment law in the spotlight

Celebration time for Lauren At the Chamber we love to nurture young talent and were particularly thrilled to see one of our latest recruits step into the spotlight at the South Cheshire College and West Cheshire College Awards. Lauren Readdin (pictured) who joined us as an apprentice two years ago, carried off the award for ‘Exceptional Enterprise and Initiative’ after helping to organise many high-profile Chamber events.

Chamber Chief Executive Paul Colman (centre) with Adam Pavey of Poole Alcock Solicitors and Andrew Hague of Howard Worth Chartered Accountants and Business Advisers at Rookery Hall

Businesses turned out in force to an event designed to help them stay on the right side of employment law. South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce welcomed a large crowd to its ‘In the Know’ event Hiring, Firing or Retiring staged at Rookery Hall. Guest speakers Adam Pavey from Poole Alcock Solicitors and Andrew Hague of Howard Worth Chartered Accountants and Business Advisers updated delegates on their obligations as employers and considerations for owners and managers looking to retire.

Crewe-born Lauren, 18, a former St Thomas More pupil, is now working as the Chamber Events Administrator and will be a familiar face to members who attend our networking dates throughout the year. Speaking about the award she said: “It came as a complete surprise to me but it was fantastic to be honoured for doing a job I love. “The Chamber has a really busy events calendar which means no two days are the same which makes it varied and exciting. Our members are also such a great bunch. There’s a strong commitment to South Cheshire and seeing it prosper and they are really welcoming to new faces.”

Chamber Events Co-ordinator Daryl Williams said: “Failure to comply with employment legislation can be devastating for a business and the aim of this event was to help local companies avoid the pitfalls while offering advice on how to recruit correctly and manage employee performance effectively. “Specialists from Poole Alcock and Howard Worth guided delegates through the essential considerations of employing new staff and how to minimise the need to dismiss staff.”

Lauren was nominated for the award by Chamber Manager Jacqui Morris who said: “Lauren shows dedication to her apprenticeship and her job role, always meeting timescales in her apprenticeship work set by her assessor and in her responsibilities at the Chamber. “Her work is always to a high standard and she often goes above and beyond her job role, taking charge of the Chamber database to positively market the events and meetings that the Chamber and its members co-ordinate. Lauren has always shown initiative in her work and strives to provide excellent customer service and representation of the business.

The delegates, drawn from a wide variety of sectors, were also offered on advice on planning for their own future and creating an exit plan for retirement when the time comes.

“She is keen to progress and takes on new tasks allocated to her. She can work as part of a team and uses her own initiative to ensure the business needs are met and run effectively. We are extremely proud of Lauren’s achievements and her popularity in the Crewe and Nantwich business community.”

Chamber Chief Executive Paul Colman said: “The Chamber is highly-regarded as a platform for sharing expertise and knowledge on all aspects of running a business and we are grateful to our members for their support in delivering successful events. Chamber In the Know events help members access specialist advice and guidance and we were delighted to welcome a large audience to the latest date focusing on employment law.”

With the Chamber’s Annual Dinner, featuring Steve Cram, hailed a big success, next will be to organise the Pre Nantwich Show Business Reception and then it will be full steam ahead with plans for another crowd-puller, the Chamber Business Awards in November.

CHAMBER NEWS 13

Chamber Business Dinner is a runaway success with Steve Cram

Words: Jan Roberts, Pure PR Pictures: Helen Williams Photography

Sporting legend Steve Cram proved a highly-entertaining and inspirational guest speaker at the South Cheshire Chamber’s Annual Business Dinner. The black tie evening drew a sell-out audience to Crewe Hall where the celebrity athlete, nicknamed the ‘Jarrow Arrow,’ recounted his career from ‘humble beginnings’ in the North East to one of the world’s most successful middle distance runners of all time. Although his schoolboy dream had been to play for Sunderland, he discovered his running talent as a teenager and through a tough training regime and determination to succeed he became a British hero of the track and field. In a career spanning over three decades since appearing as a 17 year-old at the Commonwealth Games in 1978, his many achievements include six Gold medals at the Commonwealth Games and the European and World Championships.

He said: “We are fortunate to receive fantastic support from our sponsors and the local business community who all helped to make this a memorable evening.” Rob Sproston Sporting and Celebrity Speakers provided the guest speaker and was MC for the evening. Chamber members also involved were Code Audio Visual Ltd, Helen Williams Photography and Jan Roberts of Pure PR. For more images from the Annual Business Dinner go to the Chamber website www.sccci.co.uk Steve Cram was an entertaining guest speaker

At the 1984 Olympic Games held in Los Angeles, Steve returned from injury to take a Silver medal in the 1500m behind Sebastian Coe. The following year he broke World records in the 1500m, 2000m and a mile - all within 19 days. Now a BBC presenter and motivational speaker, he told the 100-strong audience drawn from the local business community: “Be it sport or business, you don’t have to be super-talented. It’s about the work you put in and the desire to succeed. You get knocked down and you get back up.” He also spoke about the need to nurture young talent and praised the National Lottery for funding which helped Team GB climb the Olympic league table.

He added: “There’s talent on every street in Britain, and it will be here also in South Cheshire.” The Chamber has received fantastic feedback from the evening and after a gap of three years, the Business Dinner is now back on the menu as an annual event. Representatives from all Chamber Patrons – Bentley, Manchester Metropolitan University, Mornflake, Reaseheath College, SG World, South and West Cheshire College and The Guinness Partnership – enjoyed the evening. John Borrowdale, Project Manager at Mornflake, said: “All kudos to the Chamber for staging such a memorable night.” Paul Tyrer, Corporate Solicitor at new Chamber member SAS Daniels, added: “It was a real coup for the Chamber to attract such a high calibre speaker and we shall definitely be booking for this event next year.” Chamber Chief Executive Paul Colman thanked the evening’s sponsors Handelsbanken and Assurant, both major employers in South Cheshire, and Crewe Hall for supporting the drinks reception.

14 CHAMBER NEWS

Chamber welcomes road improvement schemes The new-look roundabout, widened to increase traffic flow, will include a dual use footway and cycleway. Gone will be the complex system of traffic lights and road markings that have made it difficult to negotiate for decades. Also in the pipeline is a £10.5m scheme to replace the single-lane Sydney Road rail bridge which crosses the Crewe to Manchester line. In its place will be a two lane structure supporting the B-road route to Leighton Hospital. Speaking at the Chamber’s quarterly economic update, Cheshire East Council’s Head of Strategic Infrastructure Chris Hindle said: “Ending bottlenecks is good news for motorists and business, the local economy and environment. We aim to minimise disruption but there will be road closures in the area helping us to get on and deliver these improvements in months, not years. When consulted, the message from local people was just get it done.” The improvements will support the Local Plan which includes 36,000 new homes, 31,000 jobs and a population forecast to grow by nearly 60,000 people by 2030. Members also had an update on the £58.5m Middlewich Eastern bypass scheme which will improve links between mid-Cheshire and the M6. A funding announcement is expected this summer. South Cheshire Chamber Chief Executive Paul Colman said: “HS2 will bring great things to the area in years to come but when meeting local businesses, the feed-back is concern and frustration over the current road system and parking. The Chamber welcomes the planned improvements which will address many of the issues raised but will be pressing to ensure parking is a priority in these and future plans.” Pictures by Jan Roberts at Pure PR Chamber Chief Executive Paul Colman (right) with Reaseheath College Business Development Manager Stephen Morris, Head of Finance and Performance Alex Thompson, Cllr Peter Groves, Portfolio Holder for Finance and Assets Cheshire East Council, Head of Strategic Infrastructure Chris Hindle (Left to right)

South Cheshire Chamber members have been briefed on plans to drive forward prosperity with multi-million pound package of road improvements.

Local & Economic events are staged every three months by the Chamber in conjunction with representatives from Cheshire East Council. They give members a chance to learn more about local and national issues impacting the economy and their businesses and include the latest results from the British Chambers of Commerce Quarterly Economic Survey. New Crewe headquarters for Radius talent. We’re extremely pleased to be able to do so in conjunction with Pochin’s who share our passion for building on the established reputation of Cheshire and the North West as a location of choice for big businesses.”

Work has begun on Radius Payment Solutions’ new global headquarters following a turf cutting ceremony hosted at Crewe Business Park. Work begins on new HQ for Chamber members Radius Payment Solutions

Pochin’s is at the heart of the project having secured Radius’s interest in the undeveloped plot and will now create a new 66,000 sq ft campus for the Sunday Times Top Track 100 business. With 20 offices across 13 countries, Radius will improve capacity from its existing site at Crewe’s Herald Park to up to 500 employees as it continues to promote Crewe as its international base. Work on the four-storey project, which is to include a gym, communal meeting areas and café, is expected to be completed in Spring 2018. Bill Holmes, CEO of Radius Payment Solutions, commented: “Staying in Crewe was always at the forefront of our plans for this exciting move. We’re a growing international business and the area’s connectivity in that respect made it the obvious choice for us to keep our global headquarters here. What we now have is the opportunity to create a unique, modern working environment for our staff that will further enhance our ability to attract the best

16 CHAMBER LOANS

Need a loan? The Chamber can help . . . Is your company in safe - or careless hands? I like to think that our local business leaders adopt my stance and take nothing for granted. Understanding what your customers want and how you are managing in reaching their expectations is key to success. Underestimating your client base is fatal and failing to listen to their needs, as David Cameron found out, can be politically fatal. My sporting prowess may have long been overtaken by the effects of too close an affinity with craft ales but I do hold dearly my claim to fame in the field of football. Whilst a student at Newcastle University we played against Newcastle United Youth Team and although we lost 2-0 both goals were penalties scored by a guy who later went on to score the winning goal (against Real Madrid) in a European Cup Final as well as the winning penalty in a shoot-out in the same tournament three years later. He was Alan Kennedy who upon leaving Newcastle played for Liverpool over many years. Whilst I have bored many an unsuspecting soul over the years with this tale – each year I get closer to saving that second penalty – it reminds me of my attitude to goalkeeping where I can honestly say that I never celebrated a goal any of the teams I played for scored. The Goalkeepers Union has an unwritten rule – You never take anything for granted. I only really felt comfortable if we went 4 goals up with 5 minutes to play. Perhaps there is a lesson here that politicians can learn from. Surely the likes of Cameron, Clinton and May would rethink their strategies having seen the result at the final whistle. You have to believe that if they had adopted the Goalkeeper’s Creed then results covering Brexit, the US Presidency and the recent General Election might have been different.

For those businesses that boast a goalkeeper at their helm (the craft ale predilection is optional) then the South Cheshire Development Agency Loan Fund may be what you need to take you to this level and further grow your business.

Business Loans Executive Richard Weilding

Our clients are at the heart of what we do and if the recent political past teaches us anything then it must be to never underestimate them and to try as far as possible to get out there and understand what they think. I am off now to write a reasoned piece to Gareth Southgate as to why he should consider me ahead of the hapless Joe Hart, not least because I cover more of the goal area than he does, making it less likely for Icelanders or Scots to sneak embarrassing goals past me. Nantwich couple enter bed stores with ‘intelligent’ furniture brand production lines and with warehousing in Winsford was looking to commence trading in early 2016. The Chamber Loan Fund provided financial support to get things off the ground and the initial production of the TV cabinet proved highly successful.

Innovation is alive and well and flourishing in a back garden in Nantwich, within the familyowned business Frank Olsen Furniture Ltd. Charlie Graybrook and his wife Lynsey (pictured) have developed innovative concepts for both a television cabinet and a bedside table. Both reflect elegant, modern design with the added benefit of enabling remote charging of mobile phones. Having been made redundant in 2015 Charlie embarked upon an ambitious programme of developing his ideas with Chinese manufacturing companies. From his purposebuilt office in the garden he arranged initial

Not content with this, Charlie sought further growth via a bedside cabinet and after several visits to China to meet potential manufacturers and suppliers, this line became a serious possibility. With the business growing from the success of the TV cabinet and the Company having won the local Dabber’s Den Competition for new businesses, Lynsey joined the company full time. Having developed the technology and applied for Patent protection and agreeing a manufacturing deal in China, they then had to source funding to pay upfront for a large portion of the materials and production costs. Despite several promising soundings from various lenders, this proved extremely difficult. Again the Chamber through its sister company South Cheshire Development Agency Ltd, which by this time had taken over the

Chamber Loan Fund Book, stepped up to the plate and provided the funding. Production is well underway and the first bedside cabinets will hit the High Street Benson’s For Beds - in July. Charlie said: “We recognised that our products were innovative and as such would be difficult for funders to get their heads round. We found the Chamber and latterly the Development Agency were able to adopt a refreshingly entrepreneurial stance to our proposals. The Chamber fund was certainly instrumental in getting our business off the ground.” Richard Weilding from the Agency based at the Chamber offices commented: “We were delighted to be able to assist the business where we could see the potential whilst at the same time acknowledging the difficulties conventional lending sources would face. We don’t just like to sit in front of the box but on occasions like to think outside it.” For more on the furniture range visit www.frankolsenfurniture.co.uk or call 01270 620464

BENTLEY Bentley first to achieve Carbon Trust re-certification Bentley Motors has become the first automotive manufacturer to achieve re-certification of the triple Carbon Trust Standard for reducing carbon, waste and water. Having first achieved the trio of standards in 2014, the re-certification follows Bentley’s increased investment in new technology and year-on-year progress in its manufacturing environmental performance. Bentley’s long-term strategy in making car production more environmentally efficient begins with sourcing power. The roof-mounted solar panels at Pyms Lane can contribute up to

40 per cent of Bentley’s energy requirements, reducing CO2 levels by over 2,500 tonnes a year. Since 2010, the energy usage per vehicle produced has been reduced by over 50 per cent. The transformation of water processes on site has resulted in an absolute water reduction by a further 6.1% since the original certification back in 2014. Bentley actively encourages all areas of the business to recycle, which has enabled the company to significantly reduce waste to landfill and on occasions achieve zero waste to landfill.

Bentley masterplan endorsed by cabinet Cheshire East Council has backed a masterplan which outlines how Bentley Motors’ factory in Crewe could look in the future. The development framework and masterplan was drawn up by Bentley in discussions with the council and was endorsed at a meeting of cabinet.

The masterplan underwent six-weeks of public consultation in the New Year. This process has enabled Bentley to better understand the implications of its proposed ‘campus’ at an early stage, so that any future plans are better informed and can minimise the impact on the local area.

The document provides a platform to deliver a modern, advanced manufacturing operation in the future, which would be more efficient, secure and productive and which could potentially grow and expand in line with the automotive company’s ambitions.

Bentley Motors’ aspirations for its expanded site would require the closure to the public of parts of Pyms Lane and Sunnybank Road. However, no decision has been taken on these proposals. Any detailed applications relating to the campus

www.southcheshirechamber.co.uk

or highways would be subject to further consultation before any formal planning decisions would be made. More than 4,000 people are employed directly by Bentley, which also provides many apprenticeship opportunities locally. It is Crewe’s largest single employer, accounting for more than £1billion of UK exports each year. For more information on Bentley visit www.bentleymotors.com or call 01270 255155

Appetites grow for English food products Despite, or perhaps because of, Brexit English products are proving more popular internationally. DIT has been central to this achievement, having sought to open up new markets to UK producers, launching its new ‘integrated export hub’ where companies large and small can find live export opportunities along with free advice and support to get exporting. The website is www.export.great.gov.uk

Today there are almost 200 live opportunities for food and drink exporters alone including opportunities as far afield from China to India and the Middle East. The Secretary of State said: ‘...it’s clear that many other countries around the world will also be enjoying delicious and typically English food and drink. From the Middle East to China, products are in demand and more and more producers are making sure they make the most of these opportunities as part of a Global Britain.'

New scheme to support overseas investments In an initiative launched before the election, DIT has formed an outward direct investment (ODI) team to identify the best operating model to support UK businesses in their overseas investments.

These markets were chosen due to their range of different market conditions – they differ in levels of economic development, political fragility and culture.

The new team is holding pilots in six diverse markets over the course of 2017/18. Operating models will be trialled in the United States (New York), China, Turkey, Brazil, South Africa and Ethiopia.

UK businesses can of course invest overseas in many ways – for example by setting up subsidiaries abroad, forming joint ventures or expanding their overseas operations.

A word from the Secretary of State for International Trade I am delighted to be back with you to lead the all-important work of the Department for International Trade. Our work as an international economic department has never been more critical. We are at the heart of Global Britain: ensuring the UK can take full advantage of the opportunities in the world after Brexit, championing free trade and countering protectionism, helping businesses export and supporting investment. We have much to do and I hope, like me, you are excited by the scale of the opportunity and the strength of the team behind us.

Stephen Tams from Driving Down Risk added “Sharing skills to help support our local charities and non-profit organisations is second nature for us and provides a tangible way to demonstrate and ‘live by our values and ethos’ to payback and make a positive contribution to our local communities.” Skills Exchanges just like this are creating a real impact across South Cheshire. We helped Hungerford Primary School to organise a careers day for year six students, introducing them to a range of employers including Carillion PLC, A.O and Network Rail. Pupils were engaged in finding out about possible careers and heard personal stories from a variety of professionals about their own journeys into industry.

The Crewe Pledge, hosted by South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce, aims to help businesses to inspire the next generation of future employees. In the last three months at the Crewe Pledge we have been working alongside Higher Horizons, based at Keele University. Property specialists help Nantwich blossom in top contest volunteers who give their time to keep our town looking its floral best.” Nantwich in Bloom’s 20 green-fingered helpers plant out and then keep displays looking their dazzling best by dead-heading and watering. Businesses can help the floral effort by simply decorating their frontages with hangings baskets, window boxes and planters. Managing director Shaun Cafferty, the recently-appointed chairman of the South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “As a business in the heart of the town centre, we care about its reputation and appeal to visitors who help support the local economy.

Businesses are being urged to throw their weight behind Nantwich in Bloom as the town goes for gold in the national floral contest. Over the past three years Nantwich has scooped gold for ‘Best Town’ in the Britain in Bloom regional heat and volunteers have their sights set on more medal glory in 2017. But more help is needed to impress judges and cover the costs of turning the town’s planters, tubs and baskets into a riot of colour. Nantwich in Bloom chairman Tony Percival said: “We have made contact with most of the large corporates in the town centre but sadly no sponsorship has been forthcoming. The exception again is Martin & Co, a local company and tremendous friend of our efforts. The firm has sponsored our central flower bed on the town square for the past two years and is kindly onboard again for 2017. “The square is a focal point when judges come to visit every July and this support has helped us achieve great things. Winning gold for a fantastic three times in a row is huge credit to Martin&Co and all the

“So we support Nantwich in Bloom as its volunteers put a backbreaking effort into making our town look beautiful every year. “They give Nantwich a very special wow factor and although they do get some commercial support, it’s not at the level you would expect. She said: “I love working at Crewe Hall. The history within the building is just fantastic and it offers so many opportunities to get creative with my couples and my camera. The image in question I took on December 30th last year after dark. I love using flash with my photography, particularly at night as it allows me to produce an image that my couples aren’t able to visualise. It always helps gives my work the wow factor.” Helen entered the image into the Wedissson Awards. It is a monthly international wedding photography contest that recognises creative, outstanding, inspirational and artistic wedding photography. The awards receive thousands of submissions at each round with only the best from around the world being selected. “It’s such a privilege to be given an award,” she added. “ The judging is made by a panel of highly experienced wedding photographers so it really means a lot to have been given one.” Following her success, Helen will now have the chance to be featured in the list of World Best Wedding Photographers at the start of 2018.

Helen set up her photography business three years ago as a way to escape a very stressful and demanding career in education. She never expected that within such a short time she would be running a successful and profitable business, yet alone winning international awards for her work.

Firm wins land wrangle while expanding its team There was a happy ending for the owners after a two-day hearing in the Royal Courts of Justice where Sir David Holgate, President of the Upper Tribunal, took into account how the land was used and ruled that compensation should be paid for the whole plot. Iain Johnston, a partner at Beswicks Legal and specialist in land-related compensation claims, said: “The deal put forward by HS2 would have had a detrimental impact on our client’s land and use of it for equestrian activities.

Sarah Johnson, Julian Milan, Sarah Jones, Denise Tideswell and Sophie Ellis have joined Beswicks Legal

“Without a field to graze horses, that activity could no longer take place and they quite rightly asked to be compensated for the loss of the entire site.

Beswicks Legal has celebrated victory in a complex legal battle over land required for high speed rail.

“They are over the moon with the outcome of the case and will now have the comfort of knowing that all of their land will be acquired by HS2 and they will be properly and suitably compensated.”

The firm, which this month strengthened its team with five new appointments, won the first Lands Tribunal case against HS2 and the Secretary of State for Transport.

The firm’s compensation department is now poised to deal with further claims from landowners and business owners on the high speed rail route.

The case involved a rural equestrian property in Staffordshire where a field, currently used by the owners for grazing and training their horses, is due to be acquired by HS2 as part of the Phase 2 (A) section running from Birmingham to Crewe.

Meanwhile it has welcomed solicitors Sarah Johnson and Sarah Jones to its family team, Sophie Ellis, residential property, Julian Milan, Corporate and Commercial and Denise Tideswell as Business Development Manager.

The land is split by a minor public highway and the owners, who live and run their stables from the other side, said loss of the field would ruin their lifestyle and passion for horse carriage driving.

Beswicks managing partner Nick Phillips said: “We have grown considerably over the last 12 months, enabling us to meet increased demand and provide clients with the quality service that we pride ourselves on, delivered by professionals with exceptionally high levels of expertise.”

A blight notice was submitted demanding HS2 buy the whole site but this was rejected by the Secretary of State for Transport who insisted the land be treated as separate parcels and compensation paid only for the field earmarked for the rail scheme.

Climbing Scafell in atrocious weather was a challenge but we pressed ahead with them in mind and looked after each other on the ascent.”

Celebration time as the Watts team reach the top of Scafell Pike

Financial advisers at a Nantwich company have scaled new heights in their mission to support local charities.

Helping to man a Parkinson’s UK awareness event at Nantwich Civic Hall

Team members from Watts Mortgage and Wealth Management on Beam Heath business park braved gale force winds and heavy rain to complete a climb up Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England. With sponsorship from family and friends, they raised £800 for the Crewe and Nantwich branch of Parkinson’s UK.

Days later the team, still a little tired and sore, supported a Parkinson’s awareness afternoon at Nantwich Civic Hall where they manned a stall and handed out information. The company is also a corporate fundraising partner with St Luke’s Hospice, raising money with dress down Fridays and collections.

The craggy Cumbrian landmark, soaring 3,209ft, was conquered in five hours by the group led by the company’s managing director Andrew Watts and director Barry Jones who specialises in life and critical illness policies.

Barry, from Wistaston, added: “We work closely with local parents, ensuring they have the cover they need to care for their families should they fall ill. Now we are in the planning stages of a major initiative to help fundraising for Crewe and Nantwich schools, which again is part of giving back to the community where we work and live.”

Barry said: “We met a local representative of the charity at a Redshift radio networking event and were struck by the need to support the branch and raise awareness the tremendous work it does here in South Cheshire. So often people with progressive conditions are

Chamber member earns European approval for innovative recycling process Grocery retailers can now have their old returnable transit packaging (RTP) recycled into new food-safe containers, thanks to Schoeller Allibert’s new European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) accredited recycling process. Marketing manager Karen Jervis said: “Prior to the EFSA accreditation, old or damaged plastic containers would be recycled for other use but could not re-enter the food supply chain as the plastic was not certified for direct contact with fresh produce such as fruit and vegetables, meat and fish, or bakery products. “Now, when food-grade crates need replacing due to age or damage, they can be returned to one of our three EFSA approved facilities for recycling. Providing they have been used in a closed or controlled loop distribution system, which allows traceability of provenance, we can recycle used HDPE and PP material and mould into new crates for use in the food and fresh produce supply chain.

“The products moulded from recycled material are fully compliant with Article 4 of the EU Regulation 282/2008, providing our customers with a guarantee of safety and suitability for food contact.” Schoeller Allibert, based in Winsford, has been inventing, developing, designing and manufacturing Returnable Transit Packaging (RTP) for a worldwide market more than 50 years. Hibberts Solicitors have said a fond farewell to longstanding consultant David Young, who began with the firm 50 years ago. A former Nantwich and Acton Grammar School student, Mr Young began his legal career at Dixon Bevan Riggall & Durrad in Nantwich having gained a first class degree at Pembroke College Oxford. He said: “My family were tenant farmers, but I always wanted to go into law from an early age, and when I gained joint second in the Law Society Finals while I was at university that allowed me a scholarship for my final year. “Since then I’ve largely concentrated on property law and agriculture, which also involves looking at tax and partnership issues and buying and selling agricultural land. “The nature of the work hasn’t really changed, though obviously the firm has. The partnership has expanded, as when I joined there were two partners, two assistants, three secretaries and an accountant, so in total there were around 20 people and now it’s closer to 100. “You need to always put the client first, and it’s my clients which have kept me in law for so long. I have acted for them over many years and they are now more like friends.” Mr Young has played an active part in his local community, serving as a parish councillor for 30 years, as chairman of Malbank School Governors, and on bodies including the Chester and North Wales Law Society and the Cheshire Association of Agricultural Valuers. He continues to act as director of the Nantwich Agricultural Society and remains active with the Cheshire Freemasonry. Chamber welcomes research agency as new member that each project should be assessed on its specific requirements. This is clearly demonstrated in customer satisfaction projects which may be used to inform retention, cross-sell or upsell strategies. It is important, she says, that each project is bespoke to deliver a realistic actionable outcome.

After a 20 year career promoting the voice of the customer in the Boardroom for blue chip companies, Harrison Insight founder Dr Liz Harrison (pictured) is passionate about making this accessible to all businesses.

Liz believes that it is vital for all businesses to understand both what makes their customer tick and to be aware of changes to the trading environment. Work done by Harrison Insight shows that Brexit is likely to be a huge influence on the trading environment and specifically on consumers in terms of both attitude and behaviour.

She said: “Clients often ask for help to attract more customers. In reality, this is usually two questions. Firstly, can current customers be persuaded to buy more? Secondly, how can new customers be won? “In both cases, the drivers and barriers to purchase should be explored and the relative importance of each identified. Only then, can actions be prioritised to ensure that investment is made where it will have most impact.” Liz has varied experience working in many sectors from food retail to funerals and many things in between. This has led to her belief

Currently, Harrison Insight is offering South Cheshire businesses a free evaluation of how to successfully navigate the uncertainty of Brexit and keep relevant to customers. For more information contact Liz Harrison on 07818 001009 or visit www.harrisoninsight.co.uk

Bare Bones Marketing’s ‘white label’ solution is similar to a template design for websites, just for Apps. It’s a cost effective business model that is more affordable than bespoke costly app development and includes an option enabling the client to update content themselves, without having to understand complex coding. Managing Director, Emma Dalzell, said: “As a growing business with clients in a wide range of sectors, we recognise that organisations want to use mobile technology to attract and engage with end-users and customers, but are wary of the costs of a bespoke app. “We wanted to deliver a solution with a

lower up-front investment - our ‘white label’ product has a range of options, including a licensed, hosted app, that is more affordable to businesses who may perceive that app development is beyond their budget. “With the app’s analytics, we can also track how people engage with the app, giving clients actionable information to develop their marketing further.” The service was launched with an app for Middlewich FAB Festival. Emma added: “We are very proud of how we have developed the solution, and that we are now an approved developer for Apple Store and Google Play Store.” Contact hello@bbmarketing.co.uk to find out more or call 01606 535035

Hatherton company receives European award for innovation and most innovative solutions possible for our customers.”

Hi-Spec Systems, based in Hatherton, design and manufacture Advanced Ultrasonic Phased Array and Time-of-Flight-Diffraction (ToFD) equipment.

Frost & Sullivan commended Hi-Spec Systems, for its hardware and software design which disrupts the industry by reducing the dependence on highly-skilled personnel, producing a highly integrated, easy-to-use and affordable product.

It’s a highly-specialised, niche worldwide industry, which Graham and Angela Allinson have been involved with for 25 years. Now they have been awarded the European Ultrasonic Phased Array NDT New Product Innovation Award from Frost & Sullivan for their highly innovative iProbePA. Non-destructive testing (NDT) uses ultrasound (sound waves) to detect for cracks and defects in metal structures. Phased Array is highly sophisticated and specialised NDT technique that is typically very expensive to perform and requires highly skilled personnel to operate the equipment. This is used in industries such as oil and gas, nuclear, construction, petrochemical, power

generation, storage tanks, pipelines, aircraft where detection of any defect is critical.

David Allinson, who recently joined the family business after graduating, has been tasked with the responsibility of selling the iProbePA , to a worldwide market. He said: “We have had a fantastic response to our iProbePA and have already sold them into USA, France, Belgium, Peru, Norway. We are now in the process of setting up a worldwide distribution network to sell them.”

Protect your business by protecting yourself The word ‘cyber’ often creates panic and confusion as people think it is a much bigger thing than it is. Without wanting to scaremonger, the threat to UK businesses from cyber-attacks (cyber-crimes) is significant and growing. The technical skills required to carry out attacks is no longer a factor for criminals, and a would-be attacker can even watch a video on YouTube showing them how to perform the attack.

Follow these three simple steps and you can mitigate a large proportion of attacks:

Common threats include: •

protect yourself, half of the battle against cyber-crime is won. So, in order to protect your business, the best place to start is with yourself. Good personal security practices (non-technical ones I might add), have the potential to reduce the risk of being subject of a successful cyber-attack by up to 80%.”

Ransomware: A type of malware (malicious-software), which infects a computer or device and prevents access to the data held on it. The criminal will normally send an onscreen message with it saying that the content will be decrypted or restored if a ransom is paid. Denial of Service (DoS): A method of causing a website, or computer server to go offline by sending numerous ‘requests’. These requests can come from hundreds of thousands of devices around the globe which have been infected by malware. These devices are each called a bot, and a network of them is known as a botnet. Phising: Emails that look like they are from genuine businesses or agencies (such as Amazon, PayPal, HMRC), that normally ask you to follow a link or open a file. Following these links or opening these files can install malware on your device, including ransomware.

Detective Constable Matt Hull, of the Cyber and Digital Investigations Project, says: “People are often thought to be the weakest link when it comes to cyber security, I think the opposite. If you as an individual are aware of the risks, and know how to

1. Make use of strong passwords. Don’t use the same one for everything, and don’t share your password with others. 2. Keep you device (phone/computer/tablet) safe with the latest updates or patches. 3. Install and keep up to date suitable anti-virus and/or anti malware software The Get Safe Online website (www.getsafeonline.org) has a host of tailored resources and advice on how to protect yourself and/or your business. Cheshire’s first and only interactive and life skills education centre is due to open in Lymm this September and is looking for local businesses to get involved. The centre is being built by Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service and is a state-of-the-art facility at the junction of the M6 and M56 near Lymm. It represents a £4m investment in keeping the people of Cheshire, Halton and Warrington safe from accidents and avoidable harm. Deputy Chief Fire Officer Mark Cashin said: “Safety Central's programmes will not only be targeted at schools, but also new parents, older people and the carers of people who need support to live. They will cover the hazards that they are most likely to encounter in and around their homes and communities and are devised and written with the aim of reducing accidental deaths and injuries from fire, at home, on the road and in the community.” A number of businesses have already given invaluable time, resources, support and donations. In return, the Service is offering

Dynniq UK has donated a working pedestrian crossing to help with road safety awareness, Widnes-based Normech Ltd has supplied domestic plumbing props for the centre’s home zone and Tunstall Healthcare and Sanctuary365 are providing support to allow the centre to demonstrate telecare services. Changing Lives in Cheshire has helped furnish an entire home zone to make it as ‘lived in’ and realistic as possible. SP Energy Networks, our local electricity distribution company, is sponsoring a volunteering programme and has installed a simulated sub-station and overhead cables, for use in electrical safety education. Safety Central Manager Mark Shone said: “We’d be delighted to talk to any other enterprise with a connection to health, safety and wellbeing who may wish to sponsor a scenario, provide equipment or lend their support in any way. It’s your chance to promote your brand to upwards of 5,000 people in our first year alone.” Bookings for Safety Central’s two schools’ programmes are being taken online at www.safetycentral.org.uk For further information about supporting Safety Central, contact 01606 868643 or email safetycentral@cheshirefire.org.uk
