Welcome to the Autumn edition of the Chamber’s magazine Welcome to the autumn edition of the South Cheshire Chamber’s 4FRONT magazine. The Chamber continues to be busy with plenty of activity supporting the local business community and since the last magazine this has been no different. Representation and lobbying on behalf of businesses and the local community is an important activity of a Chamber of Commerce which is vital to help create the right environment for a thriving economy. Recently we have lobbied the Government on our aspirations to see a fully integrated high speed rail hub for Crewe (page 7) that will transform South Cheshire rather than the basic hub currently proposed by HS2 ltd. Only time will tell if we have been successful, but we have worked tremendously hard to make sure the private sectors voice is heard. While lobbying is an important feature, one of the satisfying aspects of the Chamber is seeing businesses grow from small beginnings to large companies. This is true of Ken Lawton, a former local kickboxer who is celebrating 20 years at the helm of one of the largest security firms in Cheshire, now employing over 200 page 29). A tremendous achievement and one that can inspire all young businesses in the area and it’s been wonderful to witness their growth over that time. Another business that has seen tremendous growth over the last 20 years is Assurant, starting out at Crewe Hall Enterprise Park, they now have over 1000 employees at their Crewe based Head Office. The company is one of the leading providers of mobile device protection in Europe and have become the latest patron of the Chamber (page 11). We are delighted to welcome Assurant as patrons of the Chamber and they will be a great ambassador for the South Cheshire business community.
We held our Annual business luncheon at the Ibis Hotel recently, which included our AGM (page 9). It’s always an opportunity to reflect on the previous year’s activities which saw the Chamber support the business community in a variety of ways. In addition to our lobbying activities, last year the Chamber held over 50 events from networking mornings to our tremendous business awards, allowing businesses to build relationships, develop customers and share best practice. We assisted 60 plus companies to export £191m worth of goods worldwide by certifying over 1,200 documents and offering trade advice. We provided over £150k worth of loans that help create 28 jobs with business advice and support. Another busy year, but extremely satisfying to help and support businesses in our flourishing area. I am delighted to announce that the Chamber has added to our staffing resource which is great news for local businesses. Jacqui Morris has been appointed in a new role, she is now our ‘International Trade Manager’ to oversee the growth of our trade documentation service and advice to local and potential exporters. We also see the return of Jon Barnes to the Chamber as our ‘Operations Manager’ following a couple of years working in New York. I am delighted with the new appointments and look forward to working them on developing the benefits and services for our members. I wish them both well. I hope you enjoy this magazine and if your company has good news to share or you’d like to take advantage of the advertising opportunities, please do not hesitate to contact Jon at the Chamber. May I take this opportunity to wish your business every success in the future.

PRESIDENT’S PAGE 7
An artist's impression of Crewe Station following HS2
‘Time for action’ - Chamber President John Dunning In my role as Chairman of the South Cheshire Chamber Business Council I am determined to see the Business Council take the initiative in proactively promoting the business community’s views on the major development and investment proposals that are being devised for our area.
Following discussions at the last meeting it was agreed that the top priority will be to formulate a strong business–led case in support of the development of an enhanced HS2 Hub Station at Crewe and to proactively encourage local businesses to respond positively to the consultation process.
There are a number of such proposals in the pipeline that will have a significant long term impact on the future economic growth of our area and it is important that John Dunning South Cheshire Chamber President the Business Council should receive advanced information so that it can input its views from a business perspective at the earliest possible opportunity, and not merely be seen as a part of the consultation process. South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce is leading talks to maximise the benefits of HS2 for the local business community
As South Cheshire looks forward to a brighter future, Chamber President John Dunning remembers those who made the ultimate sacrifice, laying a wreath on Remembrance Day in Crewe
Continuing on this positive theme, I was privileged to preside over the Chamber’s recent Annual General Meeting which once again gave members the opportunity to hear about the vast and impressive range of activities that the Chamber is involved in on behalf of its members. We must ensure that the powers that be are fully aware of the needs and requirements of business so that they can create the right environment in which businesses can operate and create the jobs and wealth that will be vital to the future economic prosperity of our area. Taking its lead from the Chamber’s Board, the Business Council will therefore be embarking on a series of specific discussions and debates over the coming months about various key topics such as HS2, Crewe Town Centre, Crewe Master Plan and the wider area Industrial Strategy.
I was also pleased to see a number of new Directors elected to the Board, who alongside the existing Directors will continue to ensure that the interests of its members are well served and represented at local, regional and national level. At the national level, the British Chambers of Commerce continues to lobby on Brexit negotiations where the latest message is that both major parties must make every effort to get a comprehensive transition deal agreed, and trade talks firmly underway by the end of this year.

CHAMBER NEWS 9
Chamber grows its support to business Chief Executive Paul Colman told members: "Throughout 2016-17 the number of export documents South Cheshire Chamber processed was 1256 with a total value of over £191 million. There are over 60 exporters that the Chamber assists with documentation and International Trade Advice. The industry sectors range from motor vehicle, clothing, scientific products to education, engineering, food products and farming equipment to name a few." As a member of the British Chambers of Commerce, the Chamber has lobbied Government on South Cheshire infrastructure improvements, business rates and mobile connectivity.
Police cyber crime expert Matt Hull with Chamber President John Dunning, Chairman Shaun Cafferty and Chief Executive Paul Colman
South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce has stepped up its activity as it works to promote business, increase prosperity and create opportunities for young people. Members attending the organisation's AGM heard that the Chamber is working closely with major stakeholders to maximise the potential of HS2 for South Cheshire and ensure members views are heard. They also heard about the newly-launched Chamber Nantwich Panel, comprising of representatives from local businesses, which will address business and economic issues specific to Nantwich. Chairman Shaun Cafferty said that a key goal for the Chamber would be to increase its membership and the range of businesses it represents. That way the Chamber would have more credibility and speak with a stronger voice. Mr Cafferty said: “A time of great change, like this one, brings in its wake many opportunities. The Chamber will be working hard to influence these changes to ensure that they create maximum opportunity for South Cheshire businesses and local workers.” International trade support remains a staple activity of the Chamber movement, helping fledgling exporters and established businesses to trade overseas, members heard. The Chamber International Trade Forum meets regularly to share best practice and highlight export opportunities.
Locally, the Chamber continues to work closely with the Crewe Pledge initiative which has engaged with more than 10,000 students since September 2016 and has staged 155 events including careers fairs and employment readiness workshops. The South Cheshire Chamber Loan Fund continues to help businesses expand and start-ups get off the ground. Loans worth £156,000 - up 14% on last year - have helped create 28 new jobs. Mr Colman added: "Representation is a core area and the Chamber continues to engage and represent businesses on a number of board and groups." The Chamber remains the 'voice of local business' in its dealings with Cheshire East Council, Cheshire and Warrington LEP, the Bank of England Panel and local Transport Working Groups. It represents business on matters such as HS2, the Crewe Masterplan, MMU replacement and Destination Crewe - a project to attract more visitors to the town. Speaking about Crewe's now confirmed town centre regeneration, Chamber President John Dunning said the future looked bright for South Cheshire. He thanked Patrons - Bentley Motors, Guinness Partnership, Manchester Metropolitan University, Mornflake, Reaseheath College SG World and South Cheshire College - for their continued support. The AGM, which followed a business luncheon, was staged at the Ibis Styles Hotel on Crewe Business Park where guest speaker, Cheshire Police cyber crime expert Matt Hull, offered advice on security and protecting data. For more information on joining the Chamber call 01270 445404 or visit www.sccci.co.uk
Council unveils Crewe regeneration plans Cheshire East Council is to consider major plans to revitalise Crewe town centre, including the redevelopment of the Royal Arcade site, refurbishment of the Market Hall and investment in the public realm.
could see the building remodelled and refurbished to a high standard, with a focus on independent food retailers, cafes and eateries.
The proposals represent £48.3m of investment and, if supported, will trigger wider regeneration, investment and growth in Crewe and ensure that the town is well placed to benefit from its status as a HS2 rail hub.
Cllr Stockton added: “Our vision is for the town centre to become not only a great place to shop, but also a leisure destination and place to socialise with friends and family.”
The Royal Arcade site is expected to include a new eight-screen cinema, gym, restaurants and shops. It would also feature a new bus station and 450-space multi-storey car park, both of which would be funded and owned by Cheshire East Council. Plans will be considered in the New Year. Cllr Don Stockton, cabinet member for regeneration, said: “It’s essential that Crewe becomes better placed to benefit from all that HS2 can bring. These plans will build on the £25m investment that has already been realised through the lifestyle centre and university technical college and we are confident that it will act as a catalyst for much more private sector investment in the future.” The council is currently working alongside Crewe Town Council in considering plans for the Market Hall. Subject to consultation, it

Chamber proves a crowd-puller at Nantwich Show business reception
The Business Reception attracted a bumper crowd on the eve of the Nantwich Show
South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce welcomed more than 200 people to its business reception on the eve of the Nantwich Show. The event, staged in the International Cheese Show marquee, proved another hugely popular date on the summer networking calendar. Chamber members had the chance to see behind the scenes of the showground and the International Cheese Show before thousands of people descended on the agricultural extravaganza the following day.
Welcoming guests, Chamber Chairman Shaun Cafferty, said: “One of the best things about South Cheshire is how local businesses and the community work together for the common good. “The Nantwich Show is a fine example of that. It is a real flagship event which not only supports our rural economy but attracts thousands of visitors who may come again and spend money here. Many people know South Cheshire purely because they have visited the show. It puts us on the map nationally and internationally and encourages local businesses to relocate here or indeed chose to set up here because it’s a great place to live and work. “The economic boost that it gives to this area is incredible and the opportunity that it gives for businesses to promote their goods and services is without parallel. It is one of the best business showcases that there is.” The reception was staged in conjunction with Redshift Radio and Residence Restaurant and Bar which kindly sponsored the wine.

CHAMBER LOANS 17
Need a loan? The Chamber can help . . . Negotiating your way to a successful business The key word of the moment appears to be ‘negotiate’. The USA, China and North Korea all probably need to embrace the word in the coming months and David Davis in Brussels is probably sick of hearing it. Whilst I would not attempt to get anywhere near these two hot potatoes, I do feel that having negotiated with businesses for over 30 years in my former life and having survived 43 years of marriage unscathed I feel that I may be able to contribute to the understanding of this complex subject with our readers. Negotiation is a key part of local business and the more successful operators are skilled in the art. At the South Cheshire Development Agency we remain open for business and if we can provide useful tips for our clients then so much the better. I had a discussion some years ago with a champion of the art of negotiation, Alan Cleary, and came away with some tips that remain relevant today. The fact that his sphere of negotiation was the Middle East might put our own travails in this area into context. The following may be of use to you. 1)
You do need to remain attentive at all times and when your opponent tells you that he is going to put his cards on the table, always look up his sleeve.
2)
Never negotiate on the telephone unless you initiate the call and are totally prepared to talk details. Whoever makes the call has the advantage in a negotiation.
3)
When your opponent makes a threat, it is to weaken your resolve. Stay silent. People who threaten expect you to react. When you don’t, they often qualify or significantly dilute what they have said.
4)
Never accept an opening offer, no matter how good it appears to be. Tell the other side it’s not good enough but do it gently.
5)
Practise looking suitably unruffled. Practise a poker face.
6)
Watch out for the ‘Nibble’. Alastair Campbell in his autobiography states that Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness were tough negotiators, constantly nibbling, winning concessions and then wanting a little bit more.
7)
8)
If there are difficult issues that cannot be sorted quickly, park them until later where your opposite number won’t want to jeopardise the overall deal and may well ultimately not push things. Never immediately counter a proposal with your own proposal. Discuss your opposite number’s proposal indicating you appreciate what he is offering before presenting your counter offer.
9)
In negotiation, what counts is what you end up with, not how quickly you get it. Never split the difference – you don’t have to – if you go 20% or 30% then your opposite number will still see a major win for his side.
10) When making an offer don’t belittle it by using words like ‘reasonable’ and ‘generous’ Mr Cleary told me that his favourite oxymoron is ‘reasonable legal fees’. 11) Always remember that lying in negotiations is endemic – just like CV’s and expenses forms.
Business Loans Executive Richard Weilding
12) Never instantly reject a proposal. Avoid the proposal killer ‘I disagree’. 13) Never be in too much of a hurry in negotiating. Most people want a good listening to, not a good talking to, although one or two people I negotiated with in the bank wanted a good seeing to. 14) Use precise numbers, people are more convinced by precise numbers than rounded ones. 15) Watch out for these words in negotiation and treat them with caution – ‘incidentally’, ‘by the way’, ‘while I think of it’, ‘frankly’, ‘to be honest with you’, ‘to tell you the truth’ and most especially these last three - ‘in all honesty’, without a word of a lie’ and ‘trust me’. 16) One final piece of advice – when someone asks for 10, he means 8 and he really want 6 but will accept 4, so offer 2. You will be surprised how well this works but not particularly so with Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs. Hopefully there are some points above that can be taken on board. If you feel that you are currently negotiating your way to a successful business then give me a call at the Development Agency and let’s see if we can assist – negotiating with us will be a pleasure – trust me!! One final tip. You can use the above advice in everyday life but please don’t try it in Poundland. For more information on Chamber loans contact Richard Weilding on 01270 445407 or email Richardweilding@scdal.co.uk You can read more from Richard on the Chamber Portal where he blogs regularly http://www.sccci.co.uk/portal/richard_weilding/blog

Trevor Langston Crewe Pledge Employers engage in the two programmes we work on at the Chamber (Crewe Pledge with young people and New Leaf with unemployed adults) because they want to bring in new talent to their workforce and recruit locally. Both programmes are all about businesses and potential future employees directly meeting each other. This survey which shows that over half of businesses recruit by word of mouth, reinforcing the fact that these schemes, in bringing employers and local people together is the way to go. Local businesses beneďŹ t from having workers from a diverse workforce. However the ďŹ ndings that so many businesses have concerns over being able to recruit EU workers, further strengthen the need for us to work together locally to bring employers and local potential workers together. We encourage any businesses wanting to get involved in either programme to get in touch with us as we can help to introduce local young people and adults to your business.

MORNFLAKE Mornflake rebrand celebrates The Mighty Oat Their image, taken from the company archives, portrays how farming used to be and is a symbol of strength, heritage and trust – qualities valued by Mornflake and associated with the brand in 63 different countries. Mornflake’s orange trucks which ferry products up and down the country are undergoing a transformation too and a new website is set to be launched offering information on its wholesome products and recipes. Marketing manager Richard Jones said: “This exciting rebrand perfectly reflects the unique culture and brand values that underpin Mornflake as a family business. “What defines Mornflake is its heritage and unstinting dedication to producing great tasting, great value products using only the finest oats. “The rebrand pays homage to our milling experience of more than 300 years and the strength of The Mighty Oat as a nutritional powerhouse.
Breakfast giant Mornflake has unveiled a major rebrand celebrating its heritage and expertise as millers of The Mighty Oat. As Britain’s fourth oldest family-owned company, the revamp builds on the company’s centuries old reputation for excellence and the nutritional value of its oat-based products. The rebrand is being rolled out across Mornflake’s famous porridge, muesli and granola product range with new packaging featuring farm horses Flossy, Bonnie and Metal pulling a binder to cut the oats.
“We are all about blending tradition and know-how with innovation and product development which has made our latest ranges, such as our high protein and no-added products, such big sellers nationwide. “While the packaging may look a little different on the supermarket shelves, shoppers will find all the same fantastic quality and taste inside.” The family business began milling oats in South Cheshire in 1675 and today it still uses many unique techniques developed down the centuries to shell, clean and gently steam every oat.

What’s Happening on North Street (WHONS) in Crewe is a vibrant new church and community hub that has become a valuable asset for local residents and includes a coffee shop open six days a week and one Cheshire Connect is proud to support.
What’s Happening on North Street, owned and run by the Methodist Church, has become a popular destination since it opened two years ago. Its community rooms are used for a wide range of activities from Tai Chi and computer classes to police beat meetings, film nights and parenting workshops. Funds raised by the sale of drinks, cakes, sandwiches and paninis are ploughed back into the running of the facility which is staffed by a hard-working band of 20 volunteers.
Since WHONS was launched in 2015, Cheshire Connect has facilitated the introduction of many business and professional skills donors to help with a range of projects including further development of their existing business plan, specialist HR support to help with staffing the coffee shop and guidance from a Financial Analyst and Business Data Systems expert to direct financial projections, budgeting and activities in the Coffee Shop to ensure it remains sustainable. The latest business to support WHONS was Pure PR owned by Jan Roberts who produced this news release.
Church coffee shop serves up new business facilities A community hub and coffee shop is opening its doors to businesses, offering meeting and conference facilities as it grows its customer-base in Crewe.
Centre manager Geoff Etherton, said: “We welcome a wide age range from older people living locally and are socially isolated to mums meeting for a cuppa while their children make use of the toy area. “Newcomers are often surprised at just how modern we are. It’s a new build contemporary space modelled along the lines of modern coffee shops. We have just celebrated our second anniversary and hope to spread the word around the business community about our meeting and conference facilities which can be hired complete with use of Wifi and AV equipment for presentations. “As a not-for-profit organisation, any income from room hire will help to subsidise information, advice and activities for the local community.” The facility opened on the site of the former North Street Methodist Church in September 2015 after it merged with a sister church on Bradfield Road.

That church was renamed Coppenhall Methodist Church and now hosts a range of activities from worship to children's activities, knitting and Weight Watchers. So far this year our volunteers have contributed over 2000 hours to the running of the coffee shop. “We like to support the business community by using only local suppliers, from a local milkman to bakery for our bread.” Suppliers include Minshulls in Crewe, Food for Thought Bakery in Haslington and South Cheshire College catering students for cakes. The care division helps to plug employment gaps in the NHS and private clinics and care homes. Already it is placing more than 80 people a day in healthcare roles. In one week that included a physiotherapist, pharmacist and registered care manager.
KPI Care and Commercial is offering a wide range of roles in the public and private sector including positions for registered nurses, mental health nurses and carers as well as jobs for general office staff, legal assistants and customer service personnel. The office has opened on Nantwich Road, a stone’s throw from KPI's head office, which places more than 600 people a day in driving, industrial, and engineering roles.
Ryan explained: “Unemployment is very low at the moment which brings a major challenge to local employers to find the desired experience and essential skills. We will be doubling our recruitment team in Crewe ensuring our resourcers attract the best local candidates for our clients.”
Ryan Jardine, a former South Cheshire Chamber ‘Young Business Person of the Year’ winner who founded KPI Recruiting in his hometown of Crewe, is continuing to focus growth in the local area as he forms strategic recruitment partnerships with some of the area’s largest employers .

Business is fighting fit after 20 years Ken, 56, said: “As a fighter you never give up. You take a blow and get back up on your feet. You train hard and aim to please the crowd with a good honest performance. I have applied the same work ethic and principles to my business and am glad to say it has returned year on year growth.” Since the business was founded in 1997, Crewe-based Alpha Omega has grown into a big concern, providing door supervisors at venues across the North West and stewards at major outdoor events such as the Royal Cheshire Show and Nantwich Show. Ken and Ross share a joke. Front cover: The TV star congratulates him on his business anniversary
A former kick-boxer is celebrating 20 years at the helm of one of Cheshire’s biggest security firms.
Guests also included many local publicans, Nantwich and Royal County Cheshire Show officials and representatives from large companies such as NWF Boughey, Alpraham and AO.Com, 20.20 Brightstar and Unipart Rail, Crewe. It provides site security, CCTV monitoring and key-holding services for large companies and business parks as well as VIP body guards for the rich and famous.
Ken Lawton, owner of Alpha Omega Securities, welcomed more than 100 people including TV celebrity Ross Kemp to his anniversary dinner at Residence Bar and Restaurant.

Guest speaker Ross, presenter of hard-hitting documentary series Extreme World, told how Ken rose from humble beginnings, leaving school without any qualifications, to boss of a multi-million pound company employing more than 200 people.

At 18, while working as a door supervisor at Nantwich Civic Hall, Ken took up judo as a hobby and it wasn’t long before he was running his own martial arts club in Crewe teaching karate, Kung Fu and kickboxing.
Ken added: “Over the years we have employed over 2500 security personnel and it has been my mission to give the industry a better image by always employing the smartest and most courteous individuals.”
A dedicated Dabber, his proudest moment came when in 1988, at the age of 27, he won the British Light Heavyweight Kickboxing Championship before a cheering home crowd at Nantwich Civic Hall. In the limelight as a local champion, Ken continued to fight well into his 30s while ‘working the doors’ at Nantwich venues such as Gregory’s nightclub but when a friend offered him a £250 loan, he seized the opportunity to set up his own business.
One VIP guest at the dinner was former Cheshire police detective Gordon Woodall who made the generous £250 loan on a handshake promise of return. And once Alpha Omega was up and running, a cheque was posted through his door with a thankyou letter from Ken.

Bespoke marketing company is launched South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce has welcomed Tim Crighton (pictured) as a new member following the launch of his marketing company on October 1. Tim, owner of Crighton Marketing Ltd, set up the venture after a long career working for high profile companies including The County Group where he was marketing director. He said: “Many companies fully understand that they need to improve their marketing, or even simply just modernise their website, but are not yet ready to employ a full time marketing person. “This leaves the main option of engaging with a marketing agency, which can be very confusing and daunting, especially in the new age digital and social media world. “You end up with a complicated proposal that will cost a lot of money but you’re not really sure what the benefit will be, how quickly the results will occur, and no idea on the return on investment. “In fact, I believe a lot of larger agencies over complicate marketing, trying to blind with science in today’s digital world to justify hefty fees
and lengthy delivery dates. SEO is a prime example of that but not the only one. “I saw the need to offer local businesses marketing help on a completely bespoke and transparent basis.” One of his new clients, a global software reseller and services partner, was impressed with how quickly and well Crighton Marketing produced a series of new brochures in what was quite a complicated subject matter. He added: “I decided to start my new business with a very clear proposition – either a daily rate or a guaranteed price per project. Some clients choose to use us, for example, one day per week on a rolling non contractual monthly basis and others prefer a fixed price quotation for a particular initiative. “The main thing is that we can help with even the smallest marketing to-do list. I have been personally able to complete a number of marketing and advertising ideas for a business that only took two days of my time, and the company was delighted that they had new marketing material at a fraction of the cost they expected and very speedily too.” For more information contact Tim Crighton on 07920 468493 or timcrighton1@gmail.com

Owner Ben Rafferty said: “Previously we were working to 62 covers and by extending into the courtyard, that’s now doubled which means we no longer have to turn people away at busy periods. More than 300 people flocked to the unveiling of Residence in Nantwich after a £350,000 face-lift doubling its capacity. The bar and restaurant, in the historic town centre, has been extended to create stylish new dining and socialising areas. A former courtyard at the back of the building is now a light and airy eating and drinking space complete with swish cocktail bar and theatre kitchen featuring a wood-fired sourdough pizza oven. The Grade II listed Georgian mansion, once home to a London Lord Mayor, has been sympathetically refurbished to retain its original features.

A sizzling summer for Martin&Co periods. On average tenants stay between 28 and 30 months in a property offering landlords long-term security and few void periods. “Locally we let on average more than two properties every single day. In peak months, rental properties are snapped up the same day. Nantwich offers a wide mix of property from small terraces and apartments to palatial country homes. Summer 2017 saw phenomenal demand for all types of rented property. “We are delighted to be the go-to local agents for properties large and small.” Mr Cafferty, Chairman of the South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce, says Nantwich is well-placed to benefit from HS2. Celebration time for the team at Martin&Co Nantwich
Property specialist Martin&Co has ended the summer on a high after achieving record figures for lettings at its Nantwich office. The firm, based on Hospital Street, saw a 25% increase in lettings between May and August. July was the busiest month on record with 36 properties let in one month alone. They included a £1,500 per month property on Welsh Row and country mansion with equestrian interest. Demand is strong and has pushed up rental prices by 10% on last year. Average rent in Nantwich has risen to £748 per month but there is no shortage of tenants waiting to move in and experience the town’s ‘feel good factor.’ Martin&Co managing director Shaun Cafferty said: “Nantwich never loses its appeal as a town with a fantastic community spirit. It has soul and people want to be part of it. Festivals and events add to its vibrancy and make it a place where people want to live and if they are not in a position to buy a property, they will happily rent for long
He added: “Nationally, the private rented sector continues to grow in both size and popularity. Our market intelligence shows residential property delivering the highest return of any UK asset since the year 2000. Locally, and especially in Nantwich, landlords are holding on to property, looking to the future and the positive impact of HS2. “Much has been said about the benefits to Crewe and its appeal to investors. Yet Nantwich is also well-placed to benefit from HS2 and the increased demand. The town has excellent rail links and offers commuters the opportunity to enjoy a Cheshire lifestyle in a pretty historic town.” The branch, part of a national chain, has let more than 220 properties since the start of the year in Nantwich alone. It continues to be one of the most successful branches outside London and was a runner-up in the company’s ‘Franchise of the Year’ award scheme based on customer feed-back. In a survey, 92% of customers said they would recommend its services to others. For more information on properties to let in Nantwich call 01270 611333 or visit www.martinco.com

Connecting Cheshire secures £7.25m to extend broadband roll-out Project will focus on reaching premises in rural broadband black spots To date, the Connecting Cheshire project has reached more than 97,000 premises with faster speeds and has switched-on more than 600 new roadside fibre broadband cabinets. The project has also been successful in driving take-up of the faster speeds by homes and businesses and will soon reach 50 per cent, one of the highest in the country. The Digital 2020 project is a partnership of Cheshire East, Cheshire West and Chester and Warrington Borough Councils, and is managed by Cheshire East Council’s arms length Skills and Growth Company.
The fourth phase of the ‘Connecting Cheshire’ project will target rural areas in Cheshire and Warrington, where broadband speeds remain low and where it has not been commercially viable to invest previously. Called ‘Digital 2020’, the project – to be implemented over the next three years - will focus on reaching premises in rural broadband black spots, a digital business support package to enable small businesses to exploit digital technologies such as e-commerce, cloud computing and a broadband connection voucher scheme for businesses. Funding will come mainly from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and government sources, as well as from Connecting Cheshire and businesses.
Councillor David Brown, Cheshire East Council cabinet member for highways and infrastructure, said: “I am delighted this additional funding has been secured and that the Connecting Cheshire project is going from strength to strength. Faster broadband has been proven to drive economic growth and help businesses create jobs. “The Digital 2020 programme has been designed to ensure we can help as many communities and businesses as possible benefit from faster speeds.” The process of selecting an infrastructure partner for Digital 2020 is already underway and the scope of coverage will be confirmed once the procurement process is completed. It is hoped that the programme will start its roll-out in early 2018. For more information about studying Hospitality and Catering at South Cheshire College visit www.scc.ac.uk or call 01270 654654

Bentley Rotary pals go extra mile for charity Club secretary Sarah Newcombe said: “There were several injuries along the way including a sprained ankle, twisted knee and pulled hip but we were motivated by the need to support Hope House. We were invited to visit the hospice recently and were deeply moved by the bravery of the children and dedication of staff and have made it one of our chosen charities.” The club members raised money through a Just Giving page shared on social media and sponsorship from friends, family and work colleagues. Sarah added: “Our friends at the Rotary Club of Crewe and Nantwich Weaver also offered us a lot of support and chipped in £420. It is fantastic to be part of Rotary and share friendship and motivation to do good for the local community. We welcome members from outside of Bentley Motors and would love to hear from like-minded people.”

Workers at Bentley Motors got into top gear to help raise a big sum for a children’s charity. Colleagues, all members of the Rotary Club of Bentley Cheshire, raised £2,500 for Hope House Hospice after taking part in the Three Peaks Challenge. They arrived in style, travelling in Bentley Bentaygas to Fort William, before pulling on their climbing gear to take on Scotland’s highest peak, Ben Nevis. Then it was to Cumbria to climb Scafell Pike and Wales for Snowdon.
The Rotary Club of Bentley Cheshire received its official charter in May and is believed to be the first corporately-formed Rotary Club in the world. It meets at the car factory and local venues including Rookery Hall, Worleston. Club member Jan Roberts of Pure PR is helping to raise its profile through print and social media. She said: “I was delighted to be invited to join the group. The meetings are fun and there’s lots in the pipeline to look forward to including a Snow Ball on November 24 at Crewe Hall.” For more information on becoming part of the group email bentleycheshiremembership@gmail.com
A festive wonderland at Weston Christmas Light Display local organisations are sponsoring and supporting my community fundraiser, but also helping me continue this Christmas light display in memory of my sister. “At this year’s event, visitors will see many hundred lights added to the display, which will include LED lights and North-Pole characters featuring ‘Frosty the Snowman’. There will also be an opportunity for your own Christmas head-board photoshoot, so every family can take a memory back home. “Whitby Morrison is providing a different 1950’s ice cream van this year, which will be incorporated in the display. This will be another feature for 2017 and will be illuminated with Christmas decorations. It will be great to have this popular feature back for visitors to enjoy.
New Chamber member Graham Witter is planning another dazzling display of Christmas lights to raise money for the Donna Louise Children’s Hospice which provided respite care to his late, disabled sister Jessica. The Pride of Crewe winner has raised a staggering £40,000 for the hospice since he started decorating the Weston family home in 2013. This year he hopes to create an even brighter and more animated display throughout December. The house, farm buildings and garden will be transformed into a magical winter wonderland with a visit from Santa every Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening with an opportunity for your own sleigh selfie! Visitors will also have the chance to look inside Santa’s Grotto, listen to festive music and enjoy their own festive ice cream. Graham, 23, said: “It feels incredible to have created a link between our business community and my Christmas fundraising event. Many
“I feel proud that so many local businesses are supporting the light display for 2017 and feel that this demonstrates they are proud to be involved in our community. I owe them a huge thank-you for their continued generosity.” He added: “The hospice gave me and my family exceptional support in difficult circumstances before losing my sister in December 2015. I am now continuing to fundraise in her memory and I am determined to beat the £22,680 we raised in 2016. “Putting this display together is not only my way of saying 'thank you' but it's providing a great community event for everyone to enjoy. It is brilliant to see so many people visiting the display and my highlight is seeing everybody having a good time and enjoying the festive fun.” Everybody is invited between 1st - 28th December, 6:15 – 9pm at Carters Green Farm, Jack Lane, Weston.
