South Coast Plaza

50 YEARS OF STYLE South Coast Plaza celebrates its 50th Anniversary in 2017. We may be unrivaled for our collection of luxury and fashion brands, arts patronage and philanthropic partnerships, but most of all we feel we are unrivaled for the sense of community that we embody, bringing to you not only world-class shopping but experiences you can enjoy with friends and family. Who knew when the Segerstrom family planted the first lima beans in Costa Mesa that the farmland would eventually become the home of the most prestigious retail center on the West Coast, and a fashion and dining mecca of global importance. There’s much to celebrate this year: exciting events, special anniversary merchandise exclusive to the boutiques at South Coast Plaza, a retrospective book as well as influential partnerships with style authorities. This edition of Portfolio features a collaboration between South Coast Plaza and Women’s Wear Daily, highlighting Men’s and Women’s Style Director Alex Badia’s inspiration and take on the current spring trends. Most of all, we want to thank you for your patronage and loyalty. Without you, the past 50 years would not have been possible. We hope to see you at many of our upcoming events, which will be posted on southcoastplaza.com.

Inspired by Beauty is all in the details. From timepieces to fine jewelry, being bold and beautiful is a timeless combination. The fashion world today is all about making statements, never forget to let your originality shine through.

It’s all in the details This season shows a return to basics in timepiece design. 2017 trends include rose gold tones, large, menswear inspired faces and eye-catching dials featuring bold colors and shimmering mother of pearl.

The statement earring is the hottest trend right now. I especially love an earring that you can wear as a pair, as separates or even as a pin. The more versatile the earring the better! My grandmother always had owl-inspired fine jewelry—this was her trademark. The most beautiful thing of all about these jewels was how she passed her owls down from generation to generation. First she passed them on to my sister and then my nieces. I love the story a piece of jewelry can tell. Statement earrings, while eccentric, are a timeless classic you can bring out of your jewelry box again and again.

The safari trend makes fashion feel alive.

SOUTH COAST PLAZA STYLE FILE/wanderlust

Taking the safari trend one step further are Fendi, Marni and Ralph Lauren, who are showcasing collections that are inspired by the modern urban safari and utility trend. The modern women’s safari will be taking over the streets of the city this spring! Zebra, leopard or giraffe prints, it doesn’t matter! They all offer a level of escapism with an ethnic twist. From Gucci to Dolce&Gabbana, the use of feathers and ruffles really sets a woman’s wardrobe apart. Women deserve to stand out, and their clothing helps them do so–vibrantly! Prints are not limited to clothing but also make a debut in handbags, accessories, shoes and home. This Lanvin sexy cocktail dress will elevate any women’s wardrobe and bring out the roar in her style.

INSTINCT It’s all in the details Ralph Lauren’s take on animal is classic and sophisticated, for the home. Hermès Pull a room together with something animalistic, like this vase from Hermès.

Chanel’s Gabrielle bag, quilted fabric, black and white color—no trio could be more feminine.

‘‘

Cherchez La Femme means power, class and style.

It’s all in the details A woman’s presence should always be known and romanced; with a pop of red you will go anything but unnoticed. The mix of fierce and feminine inspires a showstopping look that demands attention.

Stella McCartney Light volume and all white create a classic look. Valentino Pleats and a pop of red make a fierce fashion combo.

I grew up in Barcelona, Spain, where I get a lot of my fashion inspiration. There is a strong link between the Spanish heritage and Cuban heritage, from the color palettes in clothing and architecture to the taste and spices in food. Red is a constant color we see infused in all facets of culture. My favorite Cuban food is the traditional chicken, beans and rice, and when I was growing up in Spain my favorite drink was the Cuba Libre–rum & coke, so simple but so refreshing.

Inspired by How can we not mention the Cuban Goddess, Gloria Estefan and her hit songs! Cuba is definitely a destination to go when you want to get inspired.

FIERCE AND

FEMININE

Harry Winston Embrace classic femininity— the jewel for all time: diamonds.

Inspired by One of my favorite artists is Dan Flavin, who is known for his neon installations and bright shapes. I am constantly enamored with the bright shapes, designs and geometrics that he creates. His installations are perfectly aligned with the neon trends we are seeing all over the runway.

NECESSARY

LIGHT

It’s all in the details Braids were the IT trend on the runway for Spring 2017. This trend originated in Europe and was inspired by the street style of the modern woman. Maria Grazia Chiuri had braids all over the Christian Dior show because she was inspired by the idea of the skatergirl hairstyle, a simple and feminine style you can create on your own. Valentino’s runway show featured a more romantic angle of this braid trend.

DIOR

Gucci The pop of red platform, the bright blue pattern, the stone accents—oh my!

Neon touches, retro athleticism and graphic stripes are some of the defining elements that make up the foundation of a true bold girl. Brights bring necessary light into our lives and show a woman’s playful side. The trend also includes floral in all shapes and sizes. Brights and neons always remind me of the rich hues in nature as well as the best game around—nothing is more vibrant and fun than Ms. Pac-Man!

VERSACE

Sephora Mix and match bright shadows with paler shades to create a lit-up, yet appropriate, beauty look.

CÉLINE Versace A mix of patterns and colors creates the ultimate combination of flirtatious fun. Céline Brights and muted shades pair perfectly for a clean, sleek look.
