A developer wants a haul of incentives to build a hotel in Rosedale.

oes Kansas City, Kansas, need a hotel within chip-shot distance of an existing hotel on Rainbow Boulevard? Does it need four different types of incentive to make it work?

Not everyone on the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kansas, Board of Commissioners is sure.

This past December, the UG approved the creation of a tax-increment-financing district for a 100-room, extended-stay hotel near 34th Street and Rainbow. The hotel would sit halfway down the hill between the University of Kansas Hospital and Southwest Boulevard on four acres occupied now by Applebee’s and a gas station.

The December vote doesn’t commit UG to helping pay for the $14 million project.

As things stand, some commissioners have given a frosty reception to a developer that has typically had good luck getting UG approval for projects.

Lane4 Property Group is the developer of the hotel, which doesn’t yet have an operator in place. It would rise north of the existing Oak Tree Inn at the corner of Rainbow and Southwest Boulevard and, in theory, serve visiting family members of patients at the University of Kansas Hospital.

“I think, given the fact that the hospital is exploding and developing a $240 million hospital tower to accommodate more patients, I definitely think it meets a need,” says Ann Murguia, a UG commissioner whose district includes Rosedale, the neighborhood where the hotel is being proposed.

Lane4 is no stranger to Murguia’s district.

The development firm recently refashioned a small, run-down shopping center near Mission and County Line roads with a hefty set of incentives. It also developed much of the new retail and office space and the Holiday Inn Express hotel across the street from KU Med on Rainbow. Lane4’s attorney, Korb Maxwell, is also the attorney for Murguia’s nonprofit development agency, the Argentine Neighborhood Development Association.

For this latest hotel idea, Lane4 has asked for tax-increment financing, a communityimprovement district, and the redirection of sales taxes and transient guest taxes generated by the hotel.

That’s a substantial load of incentives.

How much in dollars, no one really seems to know yet. Hunter Harris, a Lane4 principal who is shepherding the deal, says nothing is final, so he can’t say what percentage of the $14 million price tag would come from public incentives.

Hal Walker, a UG commissioner, figures that the incentive request is too much for the county to get much good out of it. Walker tells

The Pitch that he likes the idea of the hotel but worries that the incentives, which are being requested over a 20-year span, wouldn’t produce much, if any, spin-off revenue for the UG. “Lane4 — they basically want us to be an investor in a hotel, and we aren’t going to get the tourism tax, we aren’t going to get squat on this for 20 years, other than the people staying there who might go to a restaurant in the vicinity on the Kansas side,” Walker says. “We would get the sales tax from that, which, in the scheme of things, is de minimis. ... I’m not giving that kind of deal to anybody that doesn’t have a bang for us in other ways.”

UG Mayor Mark Holland has expressed similar reservations.

“I had a similar thought that the other commissioners did, which is, if what you’re presenting is accurate, it doesn’t sound very appetizing,” Holland tells The Pitch. “When I think of incentives, I like to think of return on investment.”

UG has a difficult history when it invests in hotel projects. It is half-owner of the downtown Hilton Garden Inn, which, as this newspaper chronicled in 2014 (“Zoned Out,”

September 11), has been a money loser since it opened. UG is still looking for a private investor to buy out its share of that hotel.

The Rosedale hotel is different in that UG wouldn’t own any of it. But it could end up being a heavy investor in the end. And what about incentivizing a hotel for 20 years, at the end of which a hotel operator could say, “This hotel is old, no longer suits consumer demand and needs incentives for an upgrade”?

“The Hilton Garden Inn — in 10 years we had to invest a couple million dollars in it just to get it ready for sale,” Holland says.

Lane4 is expected to come back to the UG within the next few months to hone its project. From the sound of it, the firm may have to take a step or two back from what it’s asking from taxpayers.

“Lane4 has done some pretty good work in building in areas where it’s hard to do development,” Walker says. “But, you know, it just seems at some point, how much do we have to do to have people want to come here?

They’re going to have to educate me on why this is a good deal.” •

TRYING to BUILD a LEGACY C

ongressman Emanuel Cleaver II stands in an elevator on the first floor of Kansas City, Missouri’s City Hall on a dreary Wednesday afternoon. Cleaver, flanked by a security guard, is heading to the 26th floor, where the City Council is about to meet and discuss the prospect of an $18 million infusion to the historic 18th & Vine Jazz District.

The Jazz District, which Cleaver started more than two decades ago, has prompted him to fly from Washington, D.C., for this visit. His presence gives some weight to a plea from community leaders for more city money for the struggling district. The meeting was advertised publicly as an ask for $7 million to accomplish a hodgepodge of projects: $1 million to complete the Buck O’Neil Education and Research Center in the old Paseo YMCA, $750,000 to the American Jazz Museum, and so on.

The $7 million was enough money for The Kansas City Star’s editorial board to urge caution and scrutiny in spending more money on an underperforming entertainment district that has sopped up city money over the years.

Halfway through a three-hour joint meeting of the Finance & Governance and the Planning, Zoning & Economic Development committees, the request grows to $18 million.

This includes $3.9 million for new retail shops, more than $5 million to knock down dilapidated buildings and replace them with new development and parking, another $1.1 million for a surface parking lot, and nearly $3 million for a new headquarters for Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey and a Boone Theater courtyard.

At a time when Kansas City has difficulty finding money for other priorities, such as demolishing the vacant, ramshackle houses that pockmark Kansas City’s East Side, $18 million is an extraordinary request. And it leads to some extraordinary claims from Cleaver, such as 18th & Vine being one of the three most recognizable corridors in the United States, 8

along with Broadway in New York City and Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles. Fans of Chicago’s Magnificent Mile, New Orleans’ Bourbon Street and Memphis’ Beale Street might take exception to that assertion.

In fact, 18th & Vine has trouble gaining traction as a destination for its hometown’s citizens, struggling to compete with downtown, the Crossroads Arts District and the Country Club Plaza.

Cleaver, who got 18th & Vine’s renovation started in 1989, when he was a City Council member, with a $20 million earmark that came from a larger $114 million package for capital improvements, makes another extraordinary claim: 18th & Vine hasn’t held out its hat to the city since ’89.

“We never came back,” Cleaver says. “This is the first time since the ribbon cutting. I don’t think very many projects can say that.”

Not true. A list of the city’s investments over time at 18th & Vine contradicts Cleaver’s statement. Kansas City’s Finance Department sent The Pitch a list showing where the city has spent money at 18th & Vine, and the items exceed $100 million. More than a quarter of that amount is $26 million spent over time to service debt on bonds issued for the district.

Cleaver disputes some of the projects on that list, including a $7 million line item for the Gregg/Klice Community Center, which he insists isn’t part of 18th & Vine. (It’s situated in Parade Park, immediately north of where Vine Street intersects with 17th Terrace on a narrow road called John “Buck” O’Neil Way.) Cleaver also disputes that the Black Economic Union, which has received more than $3 million from the city, according to its records, was part of 18th & Vine, even though its address is at that exact intersection.

It’s tough to argue that 18th & Vine has been divorced from public subsidies since that $20 million expenditure in 1989 (worth nearly twice that in today’s dollars, when

adjusted for inflation). That sum, many then claimed, as they do now, was the original sin of the district: It was never enough to get 18th & Vine started in a meaningful way.

The American Jazz Museum commands a direct city subsidy each year worth roughly $600,000, or a third of the museum’s budget.

(City officials tried to reduce that amount a year ago, leading to howls from museum supporters until it was restored.)

More recently, the city chipped in more than $2 million for the first phase of an Urban Youth Academy, an attraction meant to spruce up Parade Park and the 18th & Vine area.

Still, Cleaver, sitting alongside 3rd District Councilman Jermaine Reed, seemed to dazzle committee members with visions of what 18th & Vine could become with more cash.

For the most part, committee members praised the possibilities and voted unanimously to direct City Manager Troy Schulte to find a way to fund the projects and bring them back to the council for approval within 60 days.

Reed’s response was hostile. He accused Wagner of not visiting the district more than once if he was unaware of the ongoing private investment that already exists there.

But Wagner’s question was reasonable, and it has an answer: There’s no direct private investment in addition to the city dollars requested.

After the meeting, The Pitch asked Cleaver whether the $18 million, if provided by the city, would fully pay for the projects on the wish list. Cleaver claimed that it would.

So there’s no private investment? Cleaver answered that federal money has been contributed to the project (that’s public money) and that Missouri has made investments to the Urban Youth Academy (also public money). He added that the Kansas City Royals are investing money into the Urban Youth Academy. And barbecue mogul Ollie Gates has his own investments in 18th & Vine.

But for the most part, the latest ideas for

Anita Dixon is the executive director of the Mutual Musicians Foundation, an organization that has its roots in Kansas City’s jazz heyday of the 1920s, when 18th & Vine was about as far south and as far west as blacks were allowed to travel in the city. She told The Pitch that MMF and other 18th & Vine interests had been discussing ideas for the district over the last three months. They were surprised to learn that the city had other thoughts.

“I thought yesterday [last Wednesday] was our opportunity, until I got talked out of it by my 3rd District councilman,” Dixon said.

“Our discussions were shaping up to turn the area into a couple of heritage districts to be recognized internationally, to preserve what was left.”

reservation is another issue that may complicate future plans for 18th & Vine. Reed and Cleaver’s $18 million request contemplates the demolition of four buildings, along with the Armory Building at 18th Street and Highland.

Among those structures are the old Black Chamber of Commerce headquarters and

remnants of buildings once housing the old Eblon Theater and the Cherry Blossom jazz club. City officials say they want to preserve the façades of those buildings, if possible.

But preservationists are wary of the city’s promises. In 2006, the city reached an agreement with the Jazz District Redevelopment Corporation and the state of Missouri, and pledged to save and restore many historic buildings at 18th & Vine.

“I would say it has been observed more in breach than in its compliance,” says Greg Allen, president of the Historic Kansas City Foundation. He cites the demolition of the Leona Pouncey Thurman Law Office Building at 1505 East 18th Street, named after Kansas City’s first black female lawyer, as an example.

Preservationists may have found a friend in Katheryn Shields, the newly elected 4th District council member. Shields told Reed and Cleaver that she expects future 18th & Vine plans to preserve historic buildings.

“I will expect that which can be saved will be saved,” she said at the January 6 meeting.

... or Hollywood Boulevard that critics of the plan might ask if this latest $18 million proposal is “just throwing more money after bad.” That’s likely to be the debate going forward as city officials figure out which projects to pursue and how to fund them.

Lucas, who campaigned last year on a plank that called for more investment on the East Side, says more city money could jump-start greater private investment down the road.

Council member Alissia Canady has called for context on 18th & Vine’s request, pointing out how much taxpayers throw at the Power & Light District — between $12 million and $15 million — each year.

So has Reed, who wonders if $18 million is enough.

For Cleaver, that question seems secondary. When he urged the council last week to pass a resolution seeking more money for 18th & Vine, he suggested that doing so would make the city “proud” of 18th & Vine, as though the city wasn’t already.

“I am very hopeful,” Cleaver said, “that this resolution can be approved so we can be proud of an area of our city that nobody can ever, ever duplicate anywhere else in the country.” •

Notes From UNdergroUNd hile presidential candidates ponder how to “make America great again,” Subterranean Gallery director Melaney Mitchell is asking a different, better question: How do you make an alternative space alternative again?

Subterranean has long counted as alternative, if for no other reason than its location: The six-year-old art space lives in Mitchell’s cramped midtown basement.

But its innovative exhibitions — such as a pair that Mitchell curated last year, Michael Rose’s Z-SPEC and Justin Beachler’s Enterface, for which her boyfriend-slashdigital-exhibitions-manager, Kevin Heckart, fashioned a Second Life version of the gallery — increasingly face the mainstream.

“I’ve gotten to the point with Subterranean where I can — it’s like, when you’re driving and you try to drive with your knees,” she tells me. “I’ve gotten to the point where I feel like I could drive Sub with my knees. And when I started, I was totally white-knuckled.”

So Mitchell has figured out a way to renew Sub’s alt spirit while regaining that jolt of uncertainty: absence. After two years directing the gallery, she’s curating one final exhibition before handing over the reins — and the apartment keys — to Jordan Hauser, a senior at the Kansas City Art Institute.

The valedictory show, an immersive installation by artist Amy Kligman, is titled The Glory Days Will Not Last Forever. The title evokes the ephemera of childhood birthday parties and melted cupcake frosting, though it’s hard not to read it as a nostalgic wave at Mitchell and her predecessor, Subterranean founder Ayla Rexroth.

But Mitchell brushes me off before I can get too precious. She’s more than ready to move on up — to an apartment with windows, from which she can chase that white-knuckle feeling. “I want to take what I learned from this alternative space and apply it to some larger-scale exhibitions, take some risks,” she says. “I want to scare myself again.”

Mitchell took over Subterranean in the late summer of 2013, when Rexroth left to pursue an M.F.A. at Hunter College in New York.

Well, sort of.

“The Art Institute did not want that to be my internship,” Mitchell admits. It was part skepticism for a still-young institution, part something more practical: Rexroth was putting on a lecture series called The Hot Tub Dialogues at the time, and KCAI’s powers-thatbe questioned the, uh, safety of the endeavor.

“They thought I would die,” Mitchell says, sounding serious. “Basically, like, ‘You’re going to slip and fall and die if there’s a hot tub on concrete floors in a shady basement somewhere.’”

Instead, her then-instructor Jordan Stempleman advised her to spin the internship into an art-writing independent study. She still performed some typical duties — she built two walls during her first month of work — but she also wrote up The Hot Tub Dialogues for Subterranean’s nascent blog, detailing the rotating casts of performers, chefs and bartenders.

“It was a high-class party,” Mitchell says, a little wistfulness in her voice. “And it was an interesting way for me to navigate getting to know all of these artists in Kansas City in a really intimate setting where they were, you know, a little bit toasted. It was stuff like that that really made me fall in love with the space.”

She’s not alone. Hang around Art Institute grads for long, and you’re bound to hear a few stories about their sauced but scholarly escapades below ground, in this place that holds maybe 30 friends or 10 strangers. (Forget the fire code: When you visit an off-the-grid basement gallery in a rental apartment, you’re entering a tacit agreement to abandon both pretense and propriety.) When shows were busy, they felt cramped, the art perilously close to an errant drunk’s elbow. But at the right density, they were about as personal an experience as you can have with art — and artists — in this town.

“The thing I always loved about Sub was that the low ceilings forced you to talk to one another,” Mitchell says. “There were always unintentional conversations with people in the arts community. When I was helping Ayla, I would always end up talking to people that I had never imagined having conversations with. I don’t know what it is about having the ceiling right here and the work right there, but the proximity forces you to really look at stuff. And be enveloped by it.”

The space has often forced other, less pleasant effects.

“The gallery started out as this raw, nasty storage space in the basement of an apartment building,” Mitchell says. She drops the name of her property management company like a curse word, then hastily backtracks: “Don’t publish that.”

I press her a little. After six years of operations and some 15 public exhibitions, can her landlord really not know?

She shrugs. “It’s extremely under the radar.

Jordan’s moving in, and I’m just giving her the keys. My landlord did see the space once when Ayla moved out and was just like, ‘Oh.’ And then he raised the rent on me by $50.”

To hear Mitchell tell it, that extra money yielded no extra benefits or repairs. During her two years in the apartment, Mitchell has had to solve plenty of problems for her-

self. When it rained, Sub flooded. When an upstairs apartment’s bathtub overflowed, Sub flooded. The day of an opening — Ryan Shrum’s HOME // SPACE — the gas company showed up at the same time as a class of KCAI students. A gas leak on the third floor was threatening an evacuation. They wanted to boot everyone out and padlock the door.

More recently, the air conditioning died just ahead of last summer’s slate of planned programming. Heckart rigged a unit with

Mitchell shows me the contraption, all protruding PVC pipe and jagged edges. It looks like the kind of device that could get you on a terror watch list. Most curators don’t have to do this kind of thing.

continued from page 13 discovered that, unless Titanium White is exposed to sunlight, it yellows within six months. When the floors start to look like an antique wedding dress, she knows it’s time to repaint.

Given these events, I can’t help but wonder if her departure is more about the frustrations of the space than it is about the pursuit of new adventures.

“I’m more about being out of the windowless tiny apartment,” Mitchell tells me. “Yeah.

Subterranean is strange. ... It’s really, really temperamental, and it changes on a dime.

You’re living in the belly of a building, as Ayla always put it, and that makes things weird.”

Compounding troubles is that the belly is accessible only by a parking lot up a private drive — there’s no street-facing entrance.

First-time visitors can have a hard time finding the gallery, if they find it at all.

“That’s the other thing I kind of want to get away from,” Mitchell says. “Because if I’m doing things that are engaged with the public a little more heavily, it needs to be a little less off the grid.”

I ask if she’ll still be able to scratch that curatorial itch once she leaves. She tells me about a show she’s curating at La Esquina (with friend and fellow writer Blair Schulman), but her focus seems elsewhere.

“I feel like my curatorial itch is being overtaken by a studio rash,” she says. “I really

need to go make stuff for a while. And work on writing.”

When she’s not curating at Sub, Mitchell writes and edits for Informality, an arts and culture blog she started along with Subterranean heir Hauser. And last year, she was awarded a yearlong art-writing and curatorial fellowship at the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition. The fellowship was equal parts brutal and beneficial. She mentions one highlight: a meeting with Chloë Bass, writer at the acclaimed art blog Hyperallergic.

“She took one look at my piece and was like, ‘Well. This is a press release. This is not a review.’”

Ouch.

“Yeah. And I thought, OK. But this is what Kansas City’s used to. So let’s do it. Let’s shake things up a bit.”

A couple of days after our first conversation, I meet Mitchell again to check on the exhibition’s progress. She is sitting cross-legged on the gallery floor, going through her boyfriend’s record collection as she takes a break to talk to me. Bits of colorful balloon are stuck to the knees of her wet-look leggings, and every few seconds comes the percussive rap of a staple penetrating drywall. Kligman is hammering deflated, tubular balloons — balloonanimal balloons — into pompom clumps. The installation — one of the artist’s largest yet — sprawls floor-to-ceiling across walls and load-bearing poles. The goal, Mitchell says,

On the early January day I visit, it’s the process that feels overwhelming. Mitchell is splitting her time between packing up her belongings and joining Kligman to staple flowers and crepe paper to Subterranean’s walls. Luckily, she has help: Mitchell has two interns, KCAI-approved.

With a couple of more days to go before the work is complete, Subterranean already looks like a group birthday party for the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory brats. The walls are coated in drink umbrellas, streamers, clusters of tinsel. Paper fans jut out from a corner like stiff petticoats. Behind it all, a deliriously decadent backdrop — wallpaper Kligman, a former giftwrap designer and Hallmark employee (“I spent a year in ‘Party,’ ” she says), designed herself.

Kligman takes a step back, appraises the wall, and turns to a box of tiny glow-in-thedark spiders, ignoring the piles of boas and leis on the floor. “I’ve learned this process is sort of like watercolor,” she says, assembling spiders into pairs. “You’ve got to be careful about what you put down first. Because when you build it up too much, it’s hard to undo.”

The gallery starts to swell around me, arterial walls clogged with pink, and I can’t help but think of a school-wide art project from

my elementary days. We blanketed a hallway with thickets of construction paper trees and dense hanging vines to bring awareness to the destruction of the rainforest — irony being something you unlock in retrospect.

Mitchell must be feeling something, too, because she starts telling Kligman a story about having been at Walt Disney World on September 11, 2001. It soured the experience, to say the least.

“That’s kind of what this exhibition is about, in a way,” Kligman says. “Like, it’s supposed to be this magical time, and then: What is happening?”

Mitchell’s magical time is counting down.

Sub will close later this month, following Kligman’s exhibition. And so far, there’s no reopening date on the calendar. Her successor, Hauser, is still gathering ideas from collaborators, making plans. She tells me not to expect any programming until summer.

Mitchell was in the space six months before she opened her first exhibition. This kind of thing can’t be rushed. But the next iteration of Sub seems likely to continue some of the conversations Mitchell started. Hauser’s interests align with how digital art and Internet art have evolved in the past five years. Ditto the relation-

ship between social issues and social media.

“That’s what I’ve been thinking about a lot lately,” Hauser says. “And I’ve been considering, with Sub, if I should make that a focus or not.”

She goes on, with a ready laugh: “This is completely new to me. I’m pretty confident I won’t — in any way — get too comfortable too soon.”

Hauser’s attitude feels right for a gallery that’s always toed the line between alternative edge and institutional polish, whose very existence has hinged on a tightrope act of perilous particulars: a curator who doesn’t mind living in a windowless and flood-prone apartment, a public that doesn’t mind knocking on a few wrong doors to find it, a landlord who doesn’t ask questions and never stops by.

Nobody’s glory days last forever. But with a little luck — and a lot of Titanium White — Subterranean’s might last a little longer. •

emember those times in college when you forgot to buy groceries, and all you had in the kitchen was a box of rice noodles, a block of cheese, a couple cloves of garlic and some ketchup? And maybe you weren’t quite sober, and you looked at these items, cracked another beer, and said, “Yeah, I can make this work”?

The new Mac 3-Cheese Lethal Wrap at Longboards Wraps & Bowls is the pinnacle of such haphazard, fuck-it methods of food assemblage. Named for Mac Lethal, Kansas City’s fast-talking, Royals-loving, entrepreneurial rapper, the wrap contains threecheese macaroni, brisket, smoked turkey, egg, bacon, crushed Doritos and Sriracha aioli. It’s a stoner’s wet dream.

The day after Mac announced the availability of the sandwich on social media, I headed to Longboards (5415 Johnson Drive, Mission) to try it. I was shocked by the $12 price tag, but when I actually held the wrap, I understood. It was larger than my forearm and weighed several pounds. If I’d had one for my other hand, I could have done light resistance training.

When I got home and cut the wrap open, I marveled at its gooey, multicolored innards, which reminded me of a weird modern-art installation. Then I took my first bite. It was a salty, meaty mess — in a good way. I briefly contemplated how many calories the behemoth contained before concluding that, at this point, it didn’t matter. If I devoured the whole thing, I’d be screwed.

As I continued to eat, I noticed that a different ingredient became prominent with each bite. At first, I tasted the creamy mac and cheese, followed by the egg; then it was all brisket, with a pleasant Dorito finish. Once I’d finished half the wrap, I declared myself victorious. Then I found myself wanting more, which was odd because I could not recall using any illegal substances that day.

Instead of giving in to temptation, I sought to counteract the effects of everything I’d just consumed by eating several handfuls of fresh spinach, because I am definitely not in college anymore. But hey, everything is fine in moderation. •

Restaurant Week is back, and reservations are piling up.

A

lthough Kansas City’s Restaurant Week doesn’t start until Friday, January 15, the first weekend of the 10-day “week” is already booked up at many places, promising another big year for the fundraiser.

A good example: Affäre, the stylish German-Austrian venue at 1911 Main Street operated by chef Martin Heuser and his wife, Katrin. Monday of this week, nearly every reservation for lunch and dinner on January 15 and 16 had been taken, with January 1723 also going fast. “We don’t have a single reservation for the last day of Restaurant Week, on January 24,” Katrin Heuser tells me. “That would be a great time to come.”

Affäre, like the other 184 participating restaurants, is offering a special $15 lunch menu and a $33 dinner for Restaurant Week.

Because Affäre — like a number of those nearly 200 locations — is not an inexpensive restaurant, these upcoming 10 days lend a superb opportunity for local diners.

If you’ve toyed with the idea of visiting (or revisiting) Affäre or Michael Smith or Novel but have been intimidated by their price points, here’s your chance to eat in some of the metro’s most acclaimed dining rooms without having to sell the Toyota.

Since Visit Kansas City first proposed the idea of Restaurant Week to the Greater Kansas City Restaurant Association, the event has raised more than $1 million for area charitable organizations.

This year’s Restaurant Week, presented

by US Foods, offers an interesting mix of fine and casual dining, along with plenty of bar-and-grill options across the metro.

You get steakhouses (among them Capital Grille, which traditionally books up well in advance; the Journey Wood-Fired Steaks at the Argosy Casino; and Sullivan’s). You get pizzerias (Topp’d, Spin, Waldo Pizza, among others). Much menu browsing — and maybe a touch of decision fatigue — awaits you at kcrestaurantweek.com.

Browsing that site is how I found that Affäre’s three-course lunch begins with a choice of Southern German snail chowder and diced cellar vegetables (prepared with vermouth and tarragon), or candy-striped beets, wasabi espuma with fresh horseradish and beetcured gravlax. The second course prompts another decision: beer-braised pulled pork topped with handkerchief pasta, with cheddar sauce and broccoli florets; or a polentacrusted chicken breast, poached in Riesling

Chef Heuser continues his hunt for the perfect bison dish. and draped in arugula pesto over mushroom risotto with asparagus.

The dessert options for the Affäre’s lunch menu: apfelstrudel à la mode, chocolate Bavarian cream with a Riesling-poached pear, or a poppyseed torte.

The dinner menu at Affäre is more elaborate, offering several more choices — the entree list also includes Westmoreland bison sauerbraten with potato dumplings or chef Heuser’s Westmoreland bison ragout with lingonberry sauce and butterspätzle.

Among other participating restaurants high on my own list are Webster House, Westport Cafe & Bar, Renee Kelly’s Harvest, and the Rozelle Court at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. And classic Kansas City standbys abound, including the 53-yearold V’s Italiano Ristorante in Independence, Tasso’s Greek Restaurant, and J. Gilbert’s Wood-Fired Steaks & Seafood.

Several of the participating restaurants will offer menu items appropriate for vegetarian, vegan, nut-free and gluten-free diets.

Because the prices — $15 for lunch and $33 for dinner (not including beverage, taxes or gratuity) — are such a bargain, it’s not uncommon for Kansas City restaurant lovers (along with those just nursing a crush) to schedule a different dinner spot for each night of the 10-day event. he deal won’t close until the end of February, but Ted and Jackie Kincaid Habiger, owners of the two Room 39 restaurants in the metro, are going to purchase the two-year-old Sasha’s Baking Co., at 105 West Ninth Street.

Some things are already happening: Starting this weekend, the breakfast pastries served at the midtown Room 39 are coming from Sasha’s.

The Habigers had been advisers to the bakery’s founding owner, Michelle Schepmann, before the European-style shop opened.

When Schepmann decided to pursue other opportunities, she called them.

“At first I thought, ‘Absolutely no.’ And then I realized that it made a lot of sense to own our own bakery, particularly this bakery,” Ted Habiger says. “But it all hinged on Carter Holton continuing to work with us. I wanted access to a high-quality pastry chef.”

Holton, one of the most creative pastry chefs in Kansas City, has given Sasha’s a distinctive style — and has a long history with the Habigers. Ten years ago, when Holton was starting his professional career, he was the freelance pastry chef for the original Room 39, at 1719 West 39th Street. “I’ve come full circle,” he tells me.

2005 before he went off to do his own thing,” Ted Habiger says. “But I continued to follow his career.”

“Ted and Jackie were the ones who suggested that Michelle hire me for the bakery,” Holton says.

Holton will continue as the pastry chef for Sasha’s after the deal closes (and yes, the bakery’s name will stay the same), and will once again provide the desserts for Room 39. (“First the midtown location, then Leawood,” Ted Habiger says.)

Schepmann says the sale of her business is bittersweet, but she’s excited about the Habigers’ ownership: “I was very particular about who I wanted to take over this bakery,” she tells me. “I wanted someone who would continue my vision and have the same sense of quality. Sasha’s has become, I think, one of the jewels of downtown Kansas City.”

Jackie Kincaid Habiger will spend more time in the bakery than her husband (who is also overseeing the creation of the restaurant inside the yet-unopened Brewery Emperial at 19th and Oak), but Habiger has plans to streamline the kitchen and change the lunch menu and, he says, “tweak the wine and beer list.” •

Hipshot Killer’s Mike Alexander on the long road to a new album.

Yes. It’s me, Chris Wagner — who’s been in the band forever — and Buddy Lush. It’s pretty rad how it happened, man: This time last year, we’d been playing with this guy who I don’t want to go into too much detail about, but let’s just say he was a guy who was playing drums with us, and it did not work out. The Revolvers [Alexander and Wagner’s old band] were going to play a show or two around that time, and this guy who was playing drums for both the Revolvers and Hipshot Killer — he was let go. Like, fuck — maybe three weeks before that first Revolvers show was supposed to happen?

Luckily enough, Buddy, who’s been a friend forever, we work together, he stepped up. He’s the best. I asked him, “Can you come and play with us?” and he’s like, “Yeah. Of course.” So, he came and did the Revolvers stuff, and at that point, since the last drummer we had was just an absolute nightmare, I was like, “Hipshot is just done.

I just don’t have it in me to teach these songs to someone else.”

Hipshot Killer LP-release show

H

ipshot Killer recalls a specific era of ‘80s punk rock. Owing more to the melodic likes of Descendents and Husker Du than to the usual angry suspects, the Kansas City punk trio has developed a following among those who enjoy the band’s self-described “powerpunk” — an apt descriptor for the potent blend of power-pop and early Midwestern hardcore.

It’s been three and a half years since the band’s self-titled debut LP, so it comes as somewhat of a surprise that Hipshot Killer has finally released another full-length. That LP, They Will Try to Kill Us All, is out soon via Throwing Things Records.

Between the holidays, The Pitch spoke with Hipshot Killer’s front man and guitarist, Mike Alexander, to get the lowdown on the longsimmering record.

The Pitch: You’ve mentioned in passing that “technological problems” were what caused They Will Try to Kill Us All to take two years to come out. What’s the story behind that?

Alexander: It was nothing really specific. It was more like communication over modern technology. Michael Stout, who produced this with me, he would do a mix and do a

Hipshot Killer (with Alexander, left) is back. bunch of stuff, and then he’d send me those tracks, and I’d listen to it and send my notes back. We’d do that back-and-forth, sending each other notes, and it’s just really tough to properly communicate with someone about what you’re hearing when you’re not in the same room with them, I’ve found.

How far apart were you?

Just a couple of blocks, at one point.

Yeah, it was fuckin’ stupid, man. He was living at 41st and Charlotte, and I was living at 31st and Wyoming, and he moved to, like, 45th and Rainbow. But he’s the other guitar player in the Beautiful Bodies, so he was out of town a lot. Plus, Thomas Becker, from the Beautiful Bodies, played drums on the record. He was sort of in the band at the time we recorded, because we couldn’t find anybody else.

We had all sorts of personnel problems leading up to the recording of the record, and then after the recording of the record. [laughs] The whole thing really just centered itself and steadied itself earlier this year.

You have a full lineup now, though?

Back in February, Buddy was just like, “Why don’t I come play for Hipshot?” I didn’t know if I could go through all that again, teaching all those fuckin’ songs to someone again, with [They Will Try to Kill Us All] two years old at that point — I was just like, “Fuck it. I’ll put it up on a blog or Bandcamp or something for free or whatever.” He kind of talked me out of it: “Let’s get together and jam, see what happens, and if it’s cool, we’ll play some shows.” Hard to say no to that, so we did, and it was great, and then, like, a week later, Korey [Austin] from the Rackatees got hold of me, and was like, “Hey, I’m doing a label, and I want to put out your LP.” I was like, “Fuck.

Can’t say no to that.” So here we are, and it’s been pretty great. Those two things — Buddy joining and Korey putting out the record — really saved the band.

The new record sounds like the next logical step after your debut.

That’s kind of what it is, yeah, I’d like to think.

They Will Try to Kill Us All is at times much more subdued than the self-titled, and then there are portions that are much more furious. I’m thinking specifically about how album-closer “The Prize” disintegrates.

Yeah, sure. [laughs] The way it just turns into a mess, yeah. That was a lot of fun. Believe it or not, the end of that took forever, especially all those drum fills Thomas did.

It took a long time. I know it sounds like an absolute cacophonous mess, but it is — to one extent or another — a little bit orchestrated.

It’s supposed to sound like that.

That track just seemed like you could’ve put it into a locked groove and just let it simmer infinitely.

Dude, Dwayne [Trower] almost had me talked into that. He mastered it, and he also tried to talk me into a locked groove on the first side, too. I was like, “Dude, it’s already pretty dense. I don’t know.”

The fact that these songs are so old at this point — does having an album coming out and release shows attendant to it rejuvenate them at all?

You know, when Buddy started playing with us, those songs really got rejuvenated, if for nothing else than we’d had two drummers in between the recording and him. And no matter how close you try to play the songs to how they were recorded, it’s always going to have a different feel. It’s going to have a different vibe and take on a different personality, just by virtue of the people that are playing it. I like all those songs, and I like playing them.

Is there a song which you can point to that’s really changed in the span of time between the recording and now?

The song “One Good Night.” That one has kind of a little different vibe now, when we play it, just because of the way the groove has fallen with the three of us, as opposed to how it sounded in the studio. But that song in particular — Mike, the producer, is a big pop music fan. He was constantly trying to convince me: “Man, we could totally Miley Cyrus this album. Man, if you wanted to, we could Taylor Swift the fuck out of this.” That’s a quote! He actually said that to me.

I was like, “Man, I get it. I hear you, and believe it or not, I see the virtue in songs like that. I’ll let you have one, and you can put all the bells and whistles on it you want.”

So I think it would be truly impossible for us to make that song sound the same as it does on the record. We’d need to bring in six other guitar players, a keyboard player, a glockenspiel — just all this other shit he put on that song!

Are you working out new material, even though this new-old record is now coming out?

Oh, yeah. Absolutely. I want to have a new album out by the end of the year. I’m not kidding. I’ve already got the ideas and the preliminary sketches and stuff. • JANUARY 14-20, 2016

oe Stanziola tells me, with a shy look, that most of his recordings are concept albums. I detect a trace of sheepishness.

“I never mean to write concept albums,” he says. “But Almost Blue happened because I’ve been getting into jazz lately, and I wanted to cover Chet Baker’s ‘Almost Blue,’ but I’m not that great of a singer.” Stanziola laughs at this admission, as though the evidence of his poor singing is obvious — he is a rapper, after all — and continues. “But I kind of liked it, the way it turned out, and I related to it. Then, later, it just kind of morphed into this album about kind of being depressed and kind of dealing with it, and kind of not dealing with it and just making peace with it.” Stanziola pauses again. “It’s not really a happy album.”

Walk with the King Almost Blue, Stanziola’s latest album under his Second Hand King moniker, sees release at the Riot Room on Friday. He is not kidding about his dark and downtrodden theme: Stanziola mentions death in every other song, usually through the voice of his protagonist — a jazz singer, he tells me, who has become disillusioned with his craft and ends up “going pop” to revitalize his career.

The album opens with a brief intro — mournful saxophone notes, Stanziola’s untrained voice sticking to the vowels as he sings his cover of “Almost Blue.” You guys just do not give a fuck, do you? he says bitterly, in character, as a man who is addressing a

music half-empty room of patrons who don’t care about his music.

It’s a scene, Stanziola says, that is very real to him.

“Part of Almost Blue is kind of detailing those first three years in Kansas City, where I was playing to nobody,” Stanziola says, referring to the period beginning in 2010, when the Overland Park native had just decided to go by Second Hand King. “The first three albums, there was no audience, and I was just releasing music. Promoters hated me because I was playing to no one and I didn’t bring anyone into the room.”

It’s a little different now, Stanziola, now 26, says. His last album, the May-released Before the Bomb Drops — another concept piece, centered on an apocalyptic story — was received well, and he says people are helping him.

“I understand how it works now,” he says, “how albums work and singles work, and what it means to have the right video to come around with them.” Stanziola pauses, taking a sip of coffee from the ceramic mug in his left hand. “I think things have changed because I’m slowly becoming a better person. I’m not such a piece of shit. I still have moments where I’m a definite piece of shit, but I’m more honest with myself now than when I first started.”

Stanziola is recalling his early foray into rap, when he was in high school and just out of it — when he was making what he now calls “shitty gangster rap.”

“It was so far removed from who I am,” he says. “I would smoke weed all the time and start freestyling over tracks. I wanted to be cool and I wasn’t. And I’m still trying to get to a point where I can really be honest. The only way I can be honest now is by writing a concept album, where there are characters and it’s not about me. I can transpose my feelings onto the character.”

Over 11 tracks, Stanziola maps the descent of his protagonist, switching from the swift, purposeful f low he has been perfecting for a decade to the tentative, raw melodies that are new to him. We listen to Stanziola’s jazz singer battle his demons, grapple with his ambitions and face his imagined failures. In “Glass House,” when Stanziola tells us that our leading man “dreams with his head but his heart never makes the connection,” the listener supposes that it is Stanziola himself who has finally learned the difference.

On a rare occasion, the facade falls away.

In “November 24, 2014,” over melancholy jazz piano, the rapper gives us an anecdote that could only be about him: I remember when I was in the sixth grade, I didn’t pay attention to race, he spits, bought Fubu and wore it all over the place/Kids would say I tried

to act black and didn’t realize that. Later, in the chorus: I wish we could listen to ourselves/ We barely know us let alone someone else.

Today, Stanziola is wearing dark denim and a gray V-neck sweater. He has square black-framed glasses, and his hair is neatly parted on the side. He sits on a bar stool in the back office of the Loop KC, the streetwear and sneaker boutique owned in part by Indyground Entertainment founder Steddy P. He looks comfortable in his skin — something, he acknowledges, that it has taken years to achieve.

“Rap and me don’t always get along, but I definitely feel embraced by the rap community here. I feel like I’m a part of things here,” he says. “In other places, it’s different.

I played a show in Chicago three months ago, and with rap shows, it’s hit or miss with those crowds. They either really love me or really hate me. In Chicago, there were these two women in front of the stage, and as soon as my beat drops — this energetic, highfunctioning thing — these two girls were like, ‘Ugh.’ ” Stanziola imitates their bored faces. “Part of that’s the crowd in Chicago: You have to be trap or in-your-face rap, and that’s not me.”

Stanziola has no trouble identifying themes or styles that aren’t him — though he is far from closed off.

“I’ve kind of tried to work with rock bands more, but that scene is foreign to me, too.

Right now, I’m just trying to find this weird doo-wop rap scene, which doesn’t exist yet.”

That, Stanziola adds, is his next move: “I want to write a doo-wop album. I’m still staying in the hip-hop genre, staying in the roots of that, but introducing more singing and more up-tempo notes.”

Finding a place where he fits should be no problem for Stanziola, even if he has to carve out the space himself. Almost Blue, with its songs hopscotching from jazz to rap and back again, has already marked him as an artist capable of blending and stretching genres to his liking. And by the end of the album, his protagonist has made a decisive return to the half-empty jazz room. The track includes a dull hum of overlapping conversations, the clinking of glassware. Stanziola’s character closes with that cover of “Almost Blue,” and his voice seems a little steadier, a little more secure. •

Enraged Dude Details Infuriating Experience Dear EDDIE: “I relate to a lot of what EDDIE is feeling here,” said Joel Kim Booster, a Brooklyn writer and comedian. “The double-edged sword of living in a city with a large gay community is that the community gets so large that we finally have the opportunity to marginalize people within it.”

Jeff Chu, a writer who also lives in Brooklyn, can relate: “Racism still thrives in the gay community, just as in broader society,” said Chu. “Many of us who are Asian American come out of the closet and walk into this weird bamboo cage, where we’re either fetishized or ignored. Many times I’d go into a gay bar and see guys playing out some gross interracial porno in their heads — with me playing the part of their Chinese pocket gay. Others (the ones I was interested in, to be candid) would act as if I were wearing an invisibility cheongsam.”

Chu feels there’s plenty of blame to go around for this sad state of affairs. “It’s the gay media,” Chu said. “It’s Hollywood. (Even with all the LGBT characters we have on TV now, what images do we have of Asian American ones?) It’s that LGBT-rights organizations still haven’t diversified enough, especially in their leadership. And it’s all of us, when we’re lazy and don’t confront our own prejudices.”

Booster and Chu are right: Racism is a problem in the gay community, some people within are unfairly and cruelly marginalized, and we all need to confront our own prejudices.

Even you, EDDIE. You cite your height (tall!), weight (slim!), and looks (VGL!) as proof you’ve faced sexual rejection based solely on your race. But short, heavy, average-looking/ unconventionally attractive guys face rejection for not being tall, lean or conventionally hot, just as you’ve faced rejection for not being white. (The cultural baggage and biases that inform a preference for, say, tall guys is a lot less toxic than the cultural baggage and biases that inform a preference for white guys — duh.)

Dear Dan: As a queer man of color — I’m Asian — I feel wounded whenever I am exposed to gay men in New York City, Toronto, or any city where white gay men dominate. Gay men, mostly whites and Asians, reject me because of my race and no one admits to their sexual racism. I understand that sexual attraction is subconscious for many people. But it is unfair for a gay Asian like myself to be constantly marginalized and rejected. I fight for gay rights, too. I believe in equality, too. I had the same pain of being gay in high school and the same fears when coming out. Why is there no acceptance, no space, no welcome for me in this white-painted gay community? I’m six-foot-one, 160 pounds, fit, and very good-looking. What can I do? I might as well be a sexless monk.

“As a stereotypically short Chinese guy, my first reaction to reading EDDIE’s letter? Damn, he’s six-foot-one! I’m jealous,” Chu said. “And that’s also part of the problem. I, like many others, have internalized an ideal: tall, gymperfected, blah blah blah — and, above all, white.”

Booster was also struck by your stats. “It’s hard for me to wrap my head around any sixfoot-one, fit, VGL guy having trouble getting laid,” Booster said. “On paper, this is the gay ideal! I don’t really consider myself any of those things — and I have a perfectly respectable amount of sex.”

Booster, who somehow manages to have plenty of sex in New York’s “white-painted gay community,” had some practical tips for you.

“EDDIE should stay away from the apps if the experience becomes too negative,” Booster said. “If logging on to a hookup app bums him out, take a break. Being a double minority can be isolating, but living in a big city can be great.

There are meet-ups and clubs and activities for all stripes. Join a gay volleyball league — truly where gay Asian men thrive — or find one of the many gay Asian nights at one of the gay bars around the city. They’re out there.”

Chu has also managed to find romantic success in New York. “I’ve been where EDDIE is, except shorter, less fit, and less good-looking, and somehow I found a husband,” Chu said.

“The monastery wasn’t my calling, and I suspect it’s not EDDIE’s either.”

A quick word to gay white men: It’s fine to have “preferences.” But we need to examine our preferences and give some thought to the cultural forces that may have shaped them.

It’s a good idea to make sure your preferences are actually yours and not some limited and limiting racist crap pounded into your head

by TV, movies, and porn. But while preferences are allowed (and gay men of color have them, too), there’s no excuse for littering Grindr or Tinder or Recon — or your conversations in bars — with dehumanizing garbage like “no Asians,” “no blacks,” “no femmes,” “no fatties,” etc.

And while racism is a problem in the gay community (sometimes thoughtless, sometimes malicious, always unacceptable), according to 2010 U.S. Census data, as crunched by the Williams Institute at UCLA, same-sex couples are far likelier to be interracial (20.6 percent) than opposite-sex couples (13.9 percent). So there’s hope — and I don’t mean “hope that EDDIE will one day land a magic white boyfriend,” but hope for less racism in the gay community generally and fewer racist Grindr profiles specifically.

The last word goes to Booster: “A note to the rice queens who will undoubtedly write in about this man: We like that you like us. But liking us solely because of our race can be uncomfortable at best, and creepy as hell at worst.

In my experience, it’s perfectly OK to keep some of those preferences behind the curtain while you get to know us a bit as humans first.”

Not because you’re “destined to be unfaithful,” MOL, but because you’ve already been unfaithful.

Here’s what you know about yourself: You’re bisexual, you want to have sex with women and men, and you don’t want to cheat.

Which means you’ll have to either renegotiate the terms of the relationship you’re in now — get your boyfriend’s OK to have sex with a woman once in a while — or end the relationship and find a boyfriend (or girlfriend) who will give you their OK.
