Plaza fights

Highwoods isn’t bowled over by the Kansas City Plan Commission’s vision for the future.

ver since it acquired the Country Club Plaza from the J.C. Nichols Co. in 1999, real estate firm Highwoods Properties has had a precarious relationship with a Kansas City public suspicious of an out-of-town owner and its plans for the iconic retail-and-entertainment district. Things have been mostly calm between Highwoods and Plaza enthusiasts over the past five years, but a long process to codify how the Plaza might evolve threatens to disrupt an uneasy truce.

The City Plan Commission last week voted to approve what’s known as the Midtown/ Plaza Area Plan, a long document that spells out recommendations for future development patterns in key areas of Kansas City, Missouri.

The plan covers a broad swath of Kansas City — bounded by 31st Street to the north, 55th Street to the south, State Line Road to the west and the Paseo to the east — but so far, its designs for the Plaza have attracted the most attention.

Two committees worked with city staffers for more than a year to compose the Midtown/ Plaza Area Plan, which updates a generationold vision for the Plaza. An intensely complicated document, that 1989 plan set standards for development on the Plaza that, its authors believed, would not disrupt the district’s unique local character. Proponents of the new Midtown/Plaza plan see it as a mere update to the 1989 plan, especially its restrictions on building heights within the “bowl” of the Plaza created by its main retail strips. There also remains a clause forbidding certain types of businesses from signing leases there.

“There’s far more continuity here than there is departure,” says Greg Allen, president of the Historic Kansas City Foundation and a member of both committees that had a hand in drafting the Midtown/Plaza plan.

But Highwoods, the North Carolina commercial real estate firm that owns more than 800,000 square feet in the heart of the Plaza, sees the plan as more than just an update. It has objected to the plan on the grounds that it could create obstacles for current and prospective tenants. The company also suspects that passage of the plan as it is today could mean the implementation of more stringent historical standards tomorrow, a designation that would mean the company and its tenants would have to go to City Hall to seek approval for even minor changes to its buildings.

“Traditionally, you don’t think of an area plan or a master plan or a comprehensive plan as being implemented,” says Mike White, a well-known real estate lawyer representing Highwoods. “They’re supposed to be guides — the City Council is free to go along with them or not. People who have a more Procrustean view of these plans, what they’re really saying

is, they don’t want a master plan. They want a rezoning.”

With the City Plan Commission’s unanimous blessing of the plan on September 15, the matter is about to take on much higher visibility when the City Council takes it up in the coming weeks.

H

ighwoods’ name is on the deed for the most popular areas of what people consider the Country Club Plaza, but Kansas Citians tend to feel that the district belongs to them. In recent years, the most striking illustration of that attitude was the shellacking that Highwoods took when renderings of a proposed new headquarters for the Polsinelli law firm went public, in 2011. The mooted structure’s mimicry of bland, suburban trends drew furious outcry on both sides of the state line. This kind of architecture, went the social-media chorus, belonged in Overland Park’s Corporate Woods, not on the low-slung, Spanish-themed Plaza.

Polsinelli eventually backed away from the proposal and instead leased what was once the failed West Edge project (now Plaza Vista) for its new headquarters. But the public remained leery of Highwoods, and the City Council at the time — which had signaled its openness to rezoning a portion of the Plaza in contravention of the 1989 Plaza Plan — couldn’t fail to notice.

Rezoning is a profound step in city planning.

Properties all around a given municipality are

zoned for certain uses (commercial, residential, manufacturing and so on), but the needs of the residents who surround those properties are fluid, making changes to zoning inevitable.

The proposed Midtown/Plaza plan does not call for any rezoning, but it contemplates something that can have a similar impact: overlay districts, which can add stipulations limiting how land or property may be used or designed.

One element of the proposed overlay district on the Plaza is a height restriction: Buildings at the base of what’s referred to as the “bowl” of the Plaza — the retail corridor that’s bounded largely by 47th Street and Brush Creek and by J.C Nichols Parkway and Jefferson — could be no taller than 45 feet. The idea is to protect the district’s original design while allowing structures to increase in height the farther they are from the bowl.

Another element is a set of restrictions controlling the types of businesses that can operate on the Plaza.

The way Allen sees it, the restrictions keep out retailers that some see as unsavory. His prime examples are tattoo parlors and payday lenders. The plan also cites adult movie houses, animal shelters and storage facilities as verboten.

“We need a higher level of protection, and people in Kansas City have been calling for it for many years,” Allen says. “And it’s time they did it.”

But White says the document would forbid

The city and Highwoods debate the Plaza’s future. some businesses that are already on the Plaza and don’t cause problems. Case in point: automobile showrooms, also disallowed by the new plan. White says it’s a de facto prohibition against Tesla Motors, the electric-vehicle manufacturer that has announced plans to put in a showroom on the Plaza.

White says his client isn’t worried solely about what’s in the proposed plan. There is also, he says, what’s not in it. He says he believes that the next step after the Midtown/ Plaza plan would be a move to add the entire Plaza to the city’s register of historic places.

His belief isn’t merely guesswork; the Midtown/Plaza plan includes several passages that support putting areas of the Plaza within historic designations.

A vision statement in the document says, “Many significant historic buildings exist that are not formally designated…. They should be listed on the national and/or local register of historic places overlay district.”

For preservationists, such a designation ensures that a beloved building or area doesn’t get torn down. For a property owner, however, it can mean hoop-jumping at City Hall before any modification can be made. The Plaza is already seeing some of that friction.

continued from page 7 on the Plaza along Summit Street last year that were designed by famed Kansas City architect Nelle Peters. Price Brothers quietly pulled pre-demolition permits to rid the land of what it called blighted apartments. The Historic Kansas City Foundation noticed the permits and applied to City Hall to apply a special designation to the buildings. As that process makes its way through City Hall, Price Brothers’ investment sits in limbo.

“The plan is replete with references of how great it would be to designate the Plaza as a historic district,” White says. “I know from talking to various city staff, the next thing that’s coming down the pike is the city application to put this overlay district in place. I got a call a year ago from a member of the KC historical society who said, ‘I want you to help us put a historic designation on the Plaza.’ I know what’s coming.”

Allen, a preservationist, says he would consider backing a historic designation, but he tells The Pitch that’s not what’s being discussed today. “It may well be that’s what should be done.

I could argue that’s what should be done,” Allen says. “What’s being proposed is a great deal less than that.”

A

nyone with a hunger for drama in municipal government should look no further than the development of an area plan.

Across the state line, a similar conflict has unfolded as property developer Lane4’s bid to reshape the old Metcalf South Mall as a big-box-centered retail complex ran up against Overland Park’s adopted guide for development along the Metcalf corridor. With its abundance of surface parking and the potential to add redundant retail monoliths to the suburban landscape, Lane4’s plan didn’t conform to the guide, known as Vision Metcalf. The Overland Park Planning Commission recommended that Lane4’s proposal be denied; rather than rewrite it, the company halted the project altogether, complaining to the Kansas City Business Journal that Vision

Scuffles between property owners and city governments over what the owner can do with an asset are nothing new. But a Kansas City public ringed by anonymous malls and offices is increasingly interested in how those tiffs play out. As Allen points out, the Midtown/ Plaza plan isn’t a punishment targeted at Highwoods; it’s indemnification against any subsequent owner burying the bowl under charmless, ahistorical retail and architecture.

ighwoods isn’t the only private interest that’s unhappy with the Midtown/Plaza plan. Kansas City Life, a substantial property owner on the north end of the territory covered by the plan, has registered its displeasure.

“We believe it’s restrictive and limits the BN JOB: 15M640 future possibilities of redevelopment in the CLOSE DATE: 9/17/15 midtown area,” KC Life director of real estate TODAY’S DATE: 9/16/15 Kurt Schoeb told the City Plan Commission PUBLICATION: The Pitch this month. His argument sounded familiar.

REG “This is a shopping center, first and foremost,” Mark Bryant, another attorney representing Highwoods, told the Plan Commission.

“It is not a museum. It is not an art gallery. It is a shopping district. It is a shopping district that has been in existence and prospered for now a period of 93 years without this plan and without a historic overlay district.” (Bryant’s argument to the City Plan Commission presumed that the proposal included a historic designation; he was corrected by others who attended the meeting and were familiar with the document’s contents.)

For Allen, Highwoods’ treatment of the Plaza as a mere shopping district is cause for concern.

“When it suits their purpose, they always want to downplay the scenic and historic aspects of the Plaza,” he says. “They say it’s for shopping. That’s nonsense. It’s a place.”

arnet Booth jokes that she should be a “gemstone therapist.” Since founding Gigi Moon Gems earlier this year, Booth has discovered that people visiting her jewelry studio in the Bauer Building (115 West 18th Street) are often drawn to specific stones based on what’s happening in their lives. A recent heartbreak might call for something green. A shot of confidence for an upcoming job interview might require rose quartz.

“People often choose a certain stone, and when we look it up, it’s exactly what they need,” she told me one afternoon when I visited her studio. “I should really get a license.”

I was skeptical that a stone could improve my self-esteem or assuage my social anxiety, but when Booth brought it up, I found myself wanting to believe her. That day, she was wearing her “cosmic crystal” necklace, which resembled a miniature bronze icicle resting on her chest. She said the “empowering” piece was one of her favorites, and she certainly had a believably calm self-assurance.

Ethereal and intriguing, many of Gigi Moon’s offerings are inspired by Booth’s time last year in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The desert influences are easy to spot: rings and necklaces featuring fossils, sage, saguaro cactus seeds, and garnets that Booth personally dug out of anthills.

Booth’s recent Cosmos collection also features some otherworldly f lourishes.

Stainless-steel earrings and necklaces are cut

in the distinctive geometric shapes of crop circles, and certain stones look like supernovas exploding in the depths of the Milky Way. The “pillars of creation” necklace contains an actual photo of the Eagle Nebula, 7,000 light-years from Earth, and a squash-blossom necklace depicts the phases of the moon.

“My husband watches Ancient Aliens all the time, and I watched the series Cosmos twice,” Booth said of her predesign research.

“I love jewelry that has a story.”

Right now, Booth has her eye on the upcoming holiday season. She recently bought an 18-pound bag of coins that a friend of hers had collected from around the world. That afternoon, we stood in the fading light, sifting through a few handfuls that she had scattered on her worktable. The faded currency was oddly beautiful, some from the 19th century. Her workshop also held numerous containers filled with gems sourced at the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show.

“I keep telling myself I can’t buy more until I use up what I already have,” she said.

“But who am I kidding.”

Booth plans to host regular sales in her workshop, including First Fridays, ensuring that some items are priced so that those with $20 in their pockets can snatch up an original piece of wearable art. Some artists view the business side of things as “selling your soul,” Booth said, but she has been in the game long enough to know better.

“Being a starving artist has a romanticism,” she said. “But after a while, you realize you’ve gotta pay your bills.”

Prior to Gigi Moon, Booth partnered with St. Louis artist Katie Miller to create Scarlett Garnet Jewelry. The two women dissolved the business earlier this year. Booth said she’s proud of what she and Miller achieved in their eight years together, but Scarlett Garnet had run its course.

Gigi Moon will likely remain on a smaller scale, but the pieces that Booth creates may be more personally meaningful. “It’s easier to tell one person’s story,” she said.

“I have no desire to be as big as Scarlett Garnet,” she added. “I just want to come to work and be creative and do what I love.”

And it doesn’t hurt if she can provide a little free therapy along the way. When I stopped by Booth’s studio later that week for the Desert Treasures sale, I wandered around munching on some sea-salt caramels and waiting for a stone to speak to me. The one that I finally grabbed featured sage and garnets suspended in resin, which a little Internet research revealed will help cleanse my aura and attract love and devotion into my life. Who couldn’t use some of that?

knew we were screwed when the teenage boy didn’t know what a VHS tape was. I’d been stuck in Room 13 at Breakout KC for about 25 minutes with my boyfriend and five strangers, and I thought we were progressing at finding the clues that would help us escape. Then this confused kid held the antiquated plastic rectangle sideways and tried to cram it into a slot at the base of the television.

“How does this work?” he asked, his voice trembling with urgency.

Feeling momentarily annoyed before remembering my own ineptitude when trying to operate my parents’ 8-track tapes, I gently inserted the video and pressed play.

Somewhere w ithin the odd images lurked another hint that would help me and my teammates decipher a four-digit code to unlock the door. But it wasn’t going to be easy.

Following the nationwide trend of socalled “escape rooms,” Breakout KC has become one of Kansas City’s most popular tourist stops since opening in April. Founded by longtime friends Matt Baysinger, Lucas Thompson and Ryan Henrich, the River Market attraction features four rooms in which guests must find clues, solve puzzles and crack codes to break out within a 60-minute time limit.

It might be just for fun, but it’s no joke: The “easiest” room has about a 30 percent success rate — an impressive stat for Baysinger, Thompson and Henrich, who built all of the puzzles themselves after visiting multiple escape rooms across the country. The three friends quickly realized that this was something Kansas City would “absolutely love,” Baysinger told me when I talked with him the next day.

“Being three guys from Kansas City, we realized there were so many great things to do in our town,” Baysinger said. “A lot of them are food-related, of course, and we have some of the best museums in the country, but there aren’t many things you actually get to be a part of. [Breakout KC] can bring friends and families together, and afterward they go to dinner and they have something to talk about and they don’t have to look at their phones.”

My teammates and I started talking about our experience while we were still locked in Room 13. It looked like a shitty hotel room from a B-horror flick: a thinning bedspread hanging limply over a single bed, a moldering toothbrush propped on the sink, a locked suitcase tossed in the corner. I could almost smell the cheap whiskey and the takeout that its occupants would have grimly consumed had this been a real hotel room.

We quickly uncovered multiple clues, but they seemed as random as the crap strewn about the average family minivan, circa 1990. We had trouble putting the pieces together.

“This is way harder than I expected,” one woman said as she sat down on the bed and attempted to locate a well-hidden clue.

Eventually, she gave up, and her husband gave it a shot. When he got sick of it, I took over. (I can’t be more detailed without giving it away.)

“We’re a team!” I thought, feeling random bursts of affinity for these strangers. “We got this.”

Apparently, the most successful groups communicate well and incorporate many di-

verse skill sets. With three kids and four adults on our team, we seemingly had the odds stacked against us, but Baysinger said the winners are not always the ones he expects.

“For a while, our Room 13 record was held by a bunch of senior high school students,” he said. “We’ll have some groups who will find every clue in five minutes. Then they’ll get stumped for, like, 25 or 30 minutes and have no idea what to do with it. Then there are people who will have a clue right in front of their nose and they won’t see it.”

Whether you’re an experienced gamer or a curious first-timer who’s terrible at math, the rooms are designed to be fun for all skill levels — including the Kansas City-themed Truman Room, which opened last month.

When everyone is stumped, the Breakout crew is ready to offer a helping hand. Each group gets three free clues; after that, the

overall time goes up for each hint you use.

Near the end, surrounded by what looked like disparate pieces of information and a ticking clock, my team asked for help a total of five times. I’m not sure who it was, but I believe someone said, “Fuck the time — let’s just break out.” (OK, it might have been me.)

Like memories recovered after a night of binge drinking, the puzzle pieces slowly fell into place. One of the kids punched the code into the keypad, and the door clicked open.

We were free.

In the lobby, the staff let us hold a sign saying, “We broke out!” while they snapped a photo for Facebook. On the way home, my boyfriend and I were still amped up, but I was stuck on one detail in particular.

“Yeah, that was awesome and everything,” I said. “But did you know the younger generation can’t operate a VCR?”

Papa Keno’s returns to Westport,

P

apa Keno’s, the locally owned pizzeria that returned to its onetime Westport home at 415 Westport Road last week, still serves bakedto-order slices and sandwiches. But for me, it’s all about the thick-crust Sicilian pie. That’s not an easy pizza to get around these parts, and the one here is outstanding.

The presence of this location’s previous tenant, the Boot, remains evident in the long, narrow storefront space. Aaron Confessori and Richard Wiles, who own the Westport Café next door, closed the Boot in 2013, but its shiny oak tables, red-metal chairs and bar are still here. The atmosphere is much more casual now, but the post-Boot feel of the room also means that Papa Keno’s Westport version 2.0 is

noticeably nicer than the operation that pulled out of this address in 2008.

One reason: different ownership.

“Greg Keenan, who founded Papa Keno’s, had a different philosophy about his restaurants than I do,” says David Hawley, who owns the Lawrence Papa Keno’s (where Keenan founded his business and eventually ran into trouble with the state of Kansas) and co-owns the Westport store with a very hands-on managing partner, Tyler Parker. I talked with Parker one afternoon last week while he was working in the kitchen.

“I’m the pizza maker, the pizza baker, the bartender, the cleanup crew, everything,” Parker told me. He and Hawley have also ap-

From left: co-owners Hawley and Parker, Parker tossing dough, and some slice action. plied for a full liquor license, hoping to add wine and liquor to their rotating array of bottled beers and six taps. “We don’t necessarily want our customers in here doing shots,” Hawley says, “but we want to be able to offer cocktails.”

Hawley is also a partner, with Brandon Graham and David Bennett, in a company that has set out to franchise the Papa Keno’s brand.

Hawley says they’re scouting other possible locations in the metro. (The Overland Park pizzeria is solely owned by chef Philippe Lechevin.)

“We want to establish a strong brand footprint in Kansas and Missouri,” Hawley says.

He adds that he looked at spots in Waldo and near KU Medical Center before signing a lease on the Westport location.

“Westport is a great place to start building up the Papa Keno’s brand again,” Hawley says.

“We love this neighborhood.”

Parker admits that he has mixed feelings about the Westport restaurant’s late hours.

“We keep the kitchen open until 11 p.m. on weeknights and until 3 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Our customers love it, but I’m not sure that I do yet.”

estaurateur Forbes Cross doesn’t need to tell you about the electrical fire that nearly destroyed his three-year-old restaurant, Michael Forbes Bar & Grille (128 West 63rd Street). He can show it to you.

“It was all captured on videotape,” Cross says. I have cameras in the basement, in the bar, in the dining room. It’s fascinating to watch. You can see, on the tape, that at about 11 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22, a breaker in the electrical panel in the basement didn’t switch off. Suddenly, there’s an electric arc firing off, and the basement starts filling with smoke. The electrical panel was melting. Sparks were flying. It’s like a bad horror movie.”

Minutes afterward, the dining-room camera captured the dining room filling with smoke. By this time, the remaining patrons in the bar started smelling smoke — “Our alarm system had already notified the fire department,” Cross says — and the bartender had called Cross at home. He was asleep.

“I got to the restaurant at 11:15 p.m., and there were already six fire trucks there,” Cross says.

The day after the fire, as he was assessing the damage in his restaurant, Cross told The Pitch that he predicted he would be open again by June.

That turned out to be optimistic. Cross has now set September 28 for the reopening of Michael Forbes Grille — and it will look quite a bit different from the space that suffered the April fire.

Cross hired a crew to rip out the booths (which date back to this location’s previous tenant, Sharp’s 63rd Street Grill) and the carpet, among other fixtures, and the workers made an interesting discovery when removing the panels of the 1980s-era drop ceiling. There was another ceiling a few feet above that — and another beyond that: the original plaster ceiling from 1920. The renovated restaurant takes advantage of this, adding some 4 feet of height to the room and allowing new Ralph Lauren chandeliers in the dining room.

The new lighting illuminates another discovery that Cross made after the booths were taken out.

“These are the original terrazzo floors,” Cross says, pointing to the unpolished, classic marble-chip-aggregate surface. “They date back to when this building first opened, in 1920, and this space was Chatwell’s Hat Shop.

Wait until these floors are buffed and polished. They’ll be beautiful.”

For at least the past four decades, this corner address has operated as a restaurant (including Sutera’s Italian Restaurant and the various incarnations of the inexplicably popular diner Sharp’s). Cross took over the space in 2012 and installed a scaled-down version of his first restaurant success, Michael Forbes in Waldo, which opened in a forlorn shopping strip in 1985 and closed 14 years later.

When Michael Forbes Bar & Grille reopens September 28, it will look very different. of his first operation, whose loyalists came for the fried catfish, steaks and sour-cream apple pie. He revived all of those dishes for his Brookside restaurant in 2012, and they’re on the new menu, created by Cross and his 29-year-old son, Matthew (executive chef here). Among the additions: pulled-pork sliders, a Reuben with house-brined corned beef, and chicken Marsala.

The new Michael Forbes Bar & Grille will continue to offer its popular $11 Sunday brunch, and most of the kitchen and serving staff are returning this week to get the restaurant ready for its comeback.

“We’ll have something that no other restaurant in Brookside is offering,” Cross adds.

“Valet service, seven nights a week. The parking situation in this neighborhood can be stressful. There are quite a few restaurants and not so many parking spaces.”

Speaking of parking, there’s yet another improvement that Cross says he’s proud of.

“The bathrooms are totally new,” he says.

“We replaced the sinks, the toilets, the fixtures — everything. Customers hated those old bathrooms. They’ll love our new ones.”

The restrooms, for the record, are the only spots in the restaurant without cameras. Unless you take one in yourself.

Steve Tulipana and Josh Newton are back with a new music project: Sie Lieben Maschinen.

ie Lieben Maschinen released its debut album, June Gloom, on New Year’s Day. There was no party, no gig, no fanfare — barely an announcement on social media.

This wasn’t part of any conscious, antimarketing formula. The album was ready, frontman Steve Tulipana tells me, a shrug in his voice. Up it went, on with his day.

Josh Newton, guitarist and synth operator, says there wasn’t a band then anyway.

“It was just me and machines for a while — me, my computer, a drum machine and my guitar,” he explains. (In German, “sie lieben maschinen” translates to “she loves machines.”) Over the year prior to returning to Kansas City after a decade in Brooklyn, Newton had built clamorous tracks on his computer, recording all the instruments himself, regularly sending the results to Tulipana for lyrics and vocals. It wasn’t until three or four months after June Gloom came out that Sie Lieben Maschinen had its first rehearsal. Jason Gerken (also in Shiner and formerly of Season to Risk) joined on drums, Various Blonde’s Josh Allen on bass.

At first, Newton thought these tracks would be for Season to Risk, the band in which he and Tulipana spent the 1990s, off and on. But as the two continued working together, the music changed direction.

“He was sending me this stuff and he was like, ‘Do whatever you want to do,’” Tulipana says. “And I’m like, ‘Really?!’ I hadn’t done heavy music in a while, and I figured if I was going to do it, it needed to be pretty weird.

I wanted to do some really weird stuff with my voice, and I sent it back to him thinking, ‘Oh, he’s going to hate this so much.’”

“There were some moments when I felt like he was seeing how far he could go before I’d say, ‘All right, man, come on,’” Newton adds, laughing. “But I was just like, ‘Cool.

Let me send you some more.’”

Weird works for Tulipana. On June Gloom, his bright tenor is an elastic band stretching to hold the music’s post-apocalyptic guitar screeches and tantrum-throwing drumbeats. He snarls and wails through lyrics that are both unsettling (“The Man Laughs,” “Clever Work”) and filled with dark humor (“Premier Cru,” “Should’ve Looked in the Mirror”). The album’s 26 minutes pass by in one abrasive, vaguely uncomfortable blur, an ideal soundtrack for a torture chamber.

Tulipana and Newton share an interest in oddball tones and themes — both cite the unabashedly bizarre 2012 film Holy Motors as primary inspiration for their album — but Sie Lieben Maschinen is not too far out to enjoy. Punk hooks and other landmarks are embedded throughout to keep you from falling off the music’s jagged edges.

“Sie Lieben Maschinen, for me, is really the first time I’m playing music that’s exactly what I want it to be with really no limitations,” Newton says. “We can and do whatever we want, and we’re just as comfortable doing weird dance punk as we are burly noise rock.

I guess either way you look at it, you put Steve and I together, you’re going to get noise.”

The two share a laugh. Sitting across from each other in a booth at MiniBar — which Tulipana co-owns and runs, along with RecordBar — these bandmates might be taken for brothers. Now in their 40s, Tulipana and Newton have been friends for more than 20 years — since Season to Risk shared a label with Newton’s former band, Glazed Baby, in the 1990s. Sie Lieben Maschinen is more for themselves, for each other, than it is for the casual listener.

“There’s so much nonverbal communication, where we just pretty much know what the other one is going to do to a point,” Newton says. “I know how to work with him, and I think he knows how to work with me, and it’s easy. The same goes for the other guys — when Jason plays the drums, we know

what he’s going to do. The main thing is that, being the silent dictator, I haven’t had to steer anyone in a direction that I wanted it to go.

It’s just happened.”

“When he calls himself the ‘silent dictator,’ he means it,” Tulipana says. “In our previous bands, it was always a group effort — we’d come together and jam and come up with songs. Now it’s like, ‘Here’s the song!

Now you guys can put the icing on it.’ Which is a really productive way for us to work.”

He pauses. Despite the ease of this band, he admits that finding the time to work is relatively scarce — he’s got the clubs, after all, and both Newton and Gerken are frequently out of town for their own jobs. So there has been a scant handful of Sie Lieben Maschinen so far.

(Thursday’s gig will feature three new, rotating fill-in members: Richie Toomer on bass; Auggie Wolber on guitar; and Nick Organ, Gerken’s younger brother, formerly of Sundiver, on drums.) But Newton says there are seedlings of songs for the next album, and both men say they sense their project’s staying power.

“It helps that we spent months and months sleeping on floors and in bands together in the ’90s,” Tulipana says. “You do that, and it doesn’t matter who it is. You either learn to really hate the person or you really connect with them, and you’re lifelong friends at that point.”

ow in its ninth year, Columbia, Missouri’s Roots N Blues N BBQ Festival has never been stronger — thanks, in part, to a man who has long been a figure of Columbia’s music scene: Richard King.

King made headlines last November when, after 34 years, he sold his iconic music venue, the Blue Note, along with its sister venue, Mojo’s. But getting out of the club business didn’t mean getting out of the music business, and King has devoted the extra time he has had to Roots N Blues N BBQ. This year’s lineup features 30 acts from just about every branch on the roots-and-blues tree, including major names Lucinda Williams, Buddy Guy, Dwight Yoakam, Brandi Carlile, and Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors.

Ahead of the festival’s kickoff on Friday, September 25, I called King to chat about the evolution of the festival and its place in Columbia.

The Pitch: You’ve been involved with the Roots N Blues N BBQ Festival since the beginning. Tell me how your role began.

King: The festival was started nine years ago by Boone County National Bank — now called the Central Bank of [Boone County] — and they were celebrating 150 years of service to Boone County and the general midMissouri area, and their marketing company approached me. They wanted to do something a little different to celebrate the anniversary. They wanted to present a big concert in downtown Columbia, and that was sort of the embryonic stages of the festival. They wanted my help with booking the acts, and I was intrigued. I thought, “This is something that could be really cool, so count me in.” That was the first year, and it was a free event in downtown Columbia and was pretty massively successful.

Columbia over the years has really changed.

I’ve been here since 1975, and the population has practically doubled since I moved here [from Pennsylvania]. The student population has gone from something like 22,000 to 35,000. There’s been a tremendous amount of growth, and it’s a great place to live — and it’s almost growing too fast for some people.

The first year we did it, we thought it was going to be a one-year deal, and then we’d be done. But the response was so positive from the community that we thought, “Hey, let’s do this again.” It’s always had tremendous support in the area, and we’ve enjoyed watching it grow every year.

The lineup this year includes Lucinda Williams and Brandi Carlile. How much of that is an effort to appeal to a broader audience?

We’re trying to get a little more of the student population in Columbia, and some of the bands are part of that plan. But I think we have

a solid foundation, and I don’t want to stray very far from what we’re doing, to be honest.

I think our mission has been consistent over the years, and the main focus will always be — for me, anyway — the music. Obviously, they’re not all mainstream artists, they’re not all common names, and there’s not very many top-40 acts and stuff like that, and we do that because people look forward to us bringing the Punch Brothers in or bringing Junior Brown in. It’s a mix that we try to be very careful with. Introducing new and established artists that don’t have huge record success, as well as, of course, the Brandi Carliles and the Lucinda Williamses of the world.

Last November, you sold both the Blue Note and Mojo’s. What’s next for you?

So, I ran the Blue Note for 34 years, but in 2012, I had an aortic-valve complication, which is a major valve in your heart, and had openheart surgery. After I had the surgery, you start thinking about things, and I thought, “Maybe it’s time for someone else to take over.” The two gentlemen that bought the Blue Note [Matt

King of the party Gerding and Scott Leslie] had been talking about buying it for years — they’re great guys, they know what they’re doing — and I just thought this was the right time.

It actually took me several months to get used to the fact that I didn’t have to go in and work at the clubs every day. And I thoroughly enjoyed that lifestyle. It took awhile to get used to not having that. I did some things immediately. I took both of my sons on vacation, my wife and I took a vacation, and I just did some things that I always wanted to do.

And after I got back on planet Earth after all that, I made a commitment to being more hands-on with the festival. Actually, what I’m doing today is delivering pocket guides for the festival [to businesses] all over Columbia. My commitment to the festival has always been there, but they’re seeing more of me now.

Anything that needs to be done, I’m doing it.

I’m a lot more involved.

What does that mean for the future of the festival?

After each year, there’s always something we can do better — there’s always an artist out there that we’re missing. Those are the things that, in October and November, we’ll sit down and evaluate: everything that we did right, everything we did wrong, improvements we can make to our customers and our bands and the venue. We’ll just dig in and start doing it.

Beach House has always had a vaguely futuristic vibe to its music, and that has never been more apparent than on the Baltimore duo’s Depression Cherry. Victoria Legrand’s voice stretches dreamily over Alex Scally’s alluring, glittering beats, and the whole thing sounds like it belongs to a civilization that’s generations removed from our own — one, perhaps, that travels through space and interacts with alien life. Legrand herself seems otherworldly as she sings in exquisite, languid tones about the heights of being in love (“Levitation”) or searching for that ever elusive inspiration (“Sparks”). Let this band give you chills Saturday.

Mark Knopfler

In April, with zero fanfare, Mark Knopfler released Tracker, the latest addition to his library of solo albums. Tracker demonstrated (as if we needed more proof) that this industrious legend still has plenty to say, although the mellow folk songs are a few degrees removed from the rock of Knopfler’s former band, Dire Straits. In addition to going solo nearly two decades ago, Knopfler has scored TV shows and films — notably, The Princess Bride and Wag the Dog. Monday at the Midland, enjoy what surely will be a stirring concert from an artist whom Rolling Stone recognizes as one of the top 100 guitarists of all time.

Swirling saxophones and explosive drumbeats dominate Poison Season, the latest album from Dan Bejar, who performs as Destroyer. Poison Season’s 13 tracks bounce playfully among chamber pop, jazz and synth-driven electronica as this Canadian king of reinvention waxes poetic about the many sides of New York City. Nothing about Bejar’s 19-year career sugure of the gests that he’s one to play it safe. Clocking in at around an hour, Poison Season seems designed omething to feel epic, and no matter how smooth the sax artist out notes or how chill Bejar’s voice (seriously, it he things l sit down did right, Pick of the Week ments we Dream On, Dreamer bands and t doing it.

About a week ago, ZZ Ward released This Means War, the highly anticipated follow-up to her 2012 debut, Til the Casket Drops. This new album fuses blues, pop and elements of hip-hop, and is clearly meant to push her songs further up the radio playlists — and this shouldn’t be a problem. At her best, Ward sounds like a grittier version of Adele, except that Adele probably wouldn’t use punchy, funky hip-hop beats the way Ward does. At times, This Means War suffers from overproduction, obscuring her singing with busy noise, but the moments when she gets it right (“Rescue”) are worth it.
