obin Young is the mother of two children in a one-car household. When her husband drives off to work at the Great Wolf Lodge, in western Wyandotte County, the rest of the family depends on public transportation.

If the Youngs lived in Kansas City, Missouri, getting around would be a little more practical, owing to its sprawling bus network. But they live in Johnson County, where per-capita car ownership is higher — and where public transportation has long underserved residents.

Over the years, however, Robin Young’s two kids have relied on Johnson County’s public-transit system (the Jo).

When Cody Martin, the younger son, attended Johnson County Community College last year, he needed to travel about 11 miles to get there from the family’s house, near Pflumm and Shawnee Mission Parkway. If he’d had access to a car, the commute would have been a 15-minute drive on Interstate 435. Instead, he relied on one of the Jo’s longstanding bus routes: At an IHOP parking lot, he got on a bus that went to downtown Kansas City, Missouri — where he hopped on another bus that took him to JCCC. The detour stretched his midafternoon commute to about two hours.

This is life on the Jo.

Joe Reardon, former mayor of Kansas City, Kansas, takes charge at the KCATA. “If you’re in Johnson County, why go clear to Missouri to transfer to another bus to take them back to Johnson County?” Robin Young wonders.

The answer lies in the primary reason for the Jo’s existence: getting residents of the prosperous suburban county to and from downtown Kansas City, Missouri. For people who instead want to travel within Johnson County, the Jo is neither easy to navigate nor effective for reaching a workplace or a campus at punch-in times.

In 2014, 511,904 trips were taken on the system, down from years past. From its outset, the Jo has been a political hot potato and the butt of jokes. The Johnson County Museum in Shawnee preserves as part of county history a Johnson County Sun comic showing two passengers riding a bus, captioned: “The Jo doubles ridership!”

Ridership may be poised to grow, with one

in 15 Johnson County residents now living below the federal poverty line and other parts of the Kansas City metro exploring mass-transit ideas to meet demand.

Over the past decade, a majority of JoCo’s Board of County Commissioners held a dim view of increasing funding and service in meaningful ways for the bus and paratransit (transportation for the elderly and the disabled) systems. To do so would have meant increasing taxes — a virtually unthinkable notion for a politician in Johnson County.

But earlier this year, a narrow 4-3 majority of the commission voted to increase the mill levy for the first time since 2006, tacking on almost $80 in property taxes for the average household. Some of the extra money, about $1.5 million, is earmarked for improving transit.

Of that $1.5 million, $500,000 was set aside to expand the Special Edition, a version of transit reserved for elderly, low-income or disabled riders. Another $350,000 was designated for a taxi voucher program to expand paratransit services to outlying areas of the county, such as De Soto and Spring Hill.

Johnson County’s decision to increase funding for transit also resulted in a $455,000 match from Kansas City to open paratransit services between Johnson County and Jackson County.

“Stakeholders want total access to the whole metro area,” says Steven Klika, a county commissioner from Overland Park and previously a Johnson County Transit board member. “Stakeholders want job access. Stakeholders want buses that fit those routes. We don’t need huge monsters riding around on routes that don’t fit.”

Rather than trying to accomplish such improvements alone, Johnson County this year handed the keys to its transportation system to the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority. The county struck an agreement with the KCATA to manage its transit and integrate it with the metro’s other systems. The aim is to transform the Jo into a broader, more sophisticated network that connects major job and population centers.

program. That brings the overall increase in transit funding for the current year to $2.5 million ($1.5 million from the mill levy increase, the $455,000 match from KCMO and the $500,000 in KCATA savings).

The swing vote on the mill levy increase came from commission chairman Ed Eilert, who in the past was openly skeptical of public transportation. As recently as last year, he needled Ed Peterson — a commissioner from northeast Johnson County, who ran for Eilert’s seat in 2014, and a consistent advocate for public transportation — for even discussing the idea of raising taxes for things like transit.

For a car-centric community such as Johnson County, arguing in favor of public transportation carries risk; leaders there have rarely praised the Jo. Now, at least, they won’t have to talk about the unpopular system by name. As part of the KCATA agreement, the old Jo branding will go away. Buses will instead carry the new Ride KC name and logo, sharing it with most of the bus fleets around the metro — paving the way for Eilert to sound almost like a public-transit believer.

Still, he’s taking a wait-and-see approach.

“Fingers crossed — I hope it works as desired,” Eilert tells The Pitch. “It’s just that gaining ridership in Johnson County has always been a challenge. With some of the redevelopment that is occurring or on the drawing boards to occur in Johnson County, there’s an opportunity to make transit a more highly utilized system. And so we will have to wait and see.”

E

ilert was once a bus user. He does not recall those days fondly.

“Pretty bad service, from the standpoint that we had pretty old equipment,” Eilert says. This was well before he started his 24-year run as Overland Park’s mayor; back then, he rode the bus from his home, near 95th Street and Antioch, to the job he had in a Crown Center office. “You never knew whether you were going to make it to work or make it home.”

This was the late 1970s, when the KCATA managed the bus system in Johnson County.

The KCATA itself had been formed by an act of Congress in 1965, giving it bistate authority to plan and operate public transportation in a

seven-county region straddling the MissouriKansas state line. The idea was to create an entity like the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, but the congressional pact didn’t come with the right clout. The KCATA lacked taxing authority to raise money, which also kept the body from building political muscle.

Eilert’s experience on ramshackle buses was a common one, and the Johnson County commission in 1985 voted to abandon the KCATA and manage its own bus service.

County leaders at the time felt that the KCATA was stacked in favor of Jackson County interests, and that Johnson County received little from the transit organization.

“I think there was a lot of validity in their anger,” says longtime transit activist Kite Singleton. “They were not getting the kind of services they thought they needed, and the Kansas commissioners didn’t fight enough to get votes to make things happen there.”

That piece of history, coupled with the major investments that Johnson County has made in vehicle-centric developments — endlessly widening Interstate 435 and U.S. Highway 69 — explains the county’s arm’s-length attitude about public transit.

And beyond Johnson County, the rest of the KC metro has never endured the type of traffic congestion that spurred mass-transit investments in Denver, Chicago and Houston, among other communities. Here, mass transit has always been a tough sell — people simply prefer to drive themselves from point to point, even over short distances.

“It’s a challenge for those of us used to getting into an automobile and driving three blocks to go to the grocery store,” Eilert says.

“It’s a transportation style that’s convenient, and gasoline prices are down again. Many transportation proponents say when gas goes back to $4 or $5 a gallon, people will use transportation. But we’re not there.”

A time that gas remained above $4 a gallon for a sustained period coincided with the Great Recession. The dwindling global economy accelerated changes within the Johnson County transit system.

While tightening budgets necessitated cuts to the Jo (about a third of its service was cut), policymakers said the financial calamity presented an opportunity to re-evaluate how the Jo could serve the region.

“In order for transit to be much more viable, we needed to start attracting the discretionary riders: those who don’t have to take it but for various reasons would like to,” Klika says. “That revolves around jobs to a large extent.”

Especially jobs in downtown Kansas City, Missouri. But while the Jo does a reasonable job of getting Johnson Countians there, major employment centers within Johnson County have been left out of the loop. The Mission resident who works in Lenexa can’t easily get to and from her job along its current routes.

A proposed line extension in the Johnson County network would bring people into Lenexa’s employment cluster at 95th Street and Renner for the first time. Other proposed lines would take Johnson County residents all the way out to the old Bannister Mall site, where Cerner plans to add 16,000 workers, many of whom presumably will live in Johnson County.

Other upgrades include increasing the number of buses picking up riders at key stops on well-traveled lines.

An existing line that takes riders along Metcalf to the University of Missouri–Kansas City would be augmented to pick up riders from Johnson County Community College and the Prairiefire development at 135th Street and Metcalf.

Even routes that should be easy aren’t covered in the current system. The E. Allen Roth Mission Transit Center, a hub within the Jo system on Johnson Drive, can’t take anyone to the University of Kansas Medical Center and KU Hospital, both major employers.

Part of that is because KU Med is in Wyandotte County, exposing the insular nature of Johnson County’s transit outlay.

SAY IT AIN’T JO Wyandotte County will begin service. But cooperation between the Jo and other political entities is still recovering from some tensions following Johnson County’s break from the KCATA 30 years ago.

Johnson County has long kept its distance from the rest of the metro when it has come to major initiatives that crossed county and state lines. When Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders in 2008 proposed a wideranging commuter-rail plan that stretched into far reaches of the metro, Johnson County was conspicuously absent from the design.

But the tenor of regional transit has changed, with the KCATA deal setting the stage for an evolution. The Jo takeover, struck last January after 30 years of the bus line’s independence, is seen as crucial to linking existing KCATA services to the rest of the area. It’s part of a larger effort by the KCATA to flex its strength as a regional transit authority, rather than merely a bus service.

The KCATA has already become more dynamic under Joe Reardon, who took over for longtime general manager Mark Huffer last year. Reardon, the former mayor of the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/ Kansas City, Kansas, arrived without significant transit experience, but his political background is a known quantity to other metro leaders.

“As mayor, I worked with Mayor Reardon on many different things,” Eilert says. “I have confidence in his ability to provide leadership, and it’s just a matter of putting all the pieces together.”

Since Reardon stepped in, the KCATA has folded Johnson County, Wyandotte County and Independence into its sphere.

“We are looking at it on a regional basis,” says Dick Jarrold, vice president of regional planning and development for the KCATA. “You don’t see the state line or county line boundaries. We’re looking at where the needs are.”

“When I became mayor 10 years ago, there were a lot of conversations about, ‘Wouldn’t this be great?’ ” Reardon says. “But there wasn’t a lot of intentionality about how to make it work. We’re seeing that today.”

N

ot everyone wants to spend money on public transit in Johnson County.

A survey commissioned by the county this year shows that 69 percent of residents there want the county to do a better job of coordinating transportation services with regional partners. But far fewer — 29 percent — indicate a willingness to pay for that kind of cooperation through increased taxes.

It’s an attitude reflected by the narrow passage of the mill levy increase for transit on the final vote for the fiscal 2016 Johnson County budget.

I don’t think Johnson County really cares about transit — I don’t think the state of Kansas really cares about transit,” says Michael Ashcraft, a Johnson County commissioner from Olathe who voted against earmarking additional property taxes for transit. “If we did, why are we spending $500 million on the Johnson County Gateway Project when, if we spent a quarter of that, we could have a worldclass bus system to take care of bus traffic?”

The Johnson County Gateway Project is a massive face-lift to the highway interchanges at Kansas Highway 10 and Interstates 35 and 435.

According to the same 2015 survey, just 13 percent of Johnson Countians name transit among the top four priorities for countyoffered services. (Parks and recreation, ambulance, libraries and public safety fare far better.)

As policymakers are leaning toward improved access to job centers, though, more resources should be directed, Ashcraft says, toward disabled populations. “Gear a publictransit program that will address the needs of that population to be as vibrant and functional as humanly possible,” he says.

The KCATA is looking, however, to improve paratransit services — point-to-point transportation service for the disabled.

When transit programs were fragmented from city to city, someone wanting to use paratransit services had to coordinate his or her ride from one city to the next. For instance, a Roeland Park resident would have to call for paratransit services in Johnson County to find a ride to Independence, and then call the Independence transit authority to arrange a ride home. And previous paratransit guidelines meant that users could cross political boundaries only if they needed a ride for medical reasons.

nonmedical purposes. Johnson County is also testing a pilot program that would allow paratransit users to pay for a cab with countyissued vouchers. This would extend service to south Johnson County for the first time.

The county is also set to pass a new policy that will allow anyone qualifying for the Special Edition program to ride fixed routes for free.

T

he changes to Johnson County’s transit system are part of a slow play toward what transit activists hope will result in a much larger, multimodal transit network.

Moving in that direction will require more money. That could come in the form of higher funding commitments from local counties.

“That’s part of the master plan, to get moving in that direction,” Klika says.

It could also mean a bistate tax. The first such tax, for Union Station, passed almost 20 years ago. But operating losses on the refurbished station blew through a $40 million endowment, and Science City didn’t draw promised crowds — outcomes that soured Johnson Countians on future big ideas. A second bistate initiative, for pro sports stadiums and arts, failed.

Eilert sees a third bistate initiative going the same way.

“Ain’t gonna happen,” Eilert says. “That’s my judgment.”

A

public-transit system can reasonably be judged by how approachable it is to someone who is unfamiliar with it. The coming downtown streetcar line, for example, is sold in part by its utility for tourists.

With that thinking in mind, I decided to try using the Jo to get around Johnson County. While I had looked at system maps

Living in Brookside, I have easy access to several bus lines within a short walk of my house. At each stop on those lines is a list of arrival times for the various routes that come and go. It’s a system that doesn’t require much thinking or planning. Maybe the Jo would be the same. I set aside the morning of October 1 to find out.

My wife and I drove to her office, near Highway 69 and 135th Street. From there, I walked a few minutes to the first bus stop that I could find, at 132nd Street and Metcalf.

It was around 8:30 in the morning.

There were no signs indicating what routes passed by this stop or what time I could expect a bus.

I waited an hour and a half with no sign of a bus before I decided to look up the Jo’s routes on my phone. I discovered that the Jo’s Metcalf Connex line, the rough equivalent of Kansas City’s MAX line, doesn’t reach 132nd Street. Ever. In fact, the farthest south it goes to pick up downtown-bound commuters is Rosana Square, at 119th Street and Metcalf.

The last northbound bus had left that stop at 7:46 a.m. I was stranded.

Before an acquaintance heading downtown spotted me and offered a ride, this was my primary thought: “I’m out here in the peak of rush hour in one of the fastest growing parts of the county, and there’s no bus to take me anywhere.”

Maybe the KCATA had the same thought.

One of the line extensions that it is considering in 2016 is a Metcalf Connex line that would extend to 135th Street and Metcalf.

Maybe next year, I’ll try the Jo again.

W

ell before Thomas Hart Benton’s death 40 years ago, the Missouri-born painter had been eclipsed by the next generation of artists and left behind by critics. Even in Kansas City, where he taught and which was his home for the last 35 years of his life, Benton and his legacy were — and remain — divisive. An exhibition dedicated to the centennial

of his birth was the last major Benton show here, and that was a quarter-century ago. But Benton’s oil-andtempera “Hollywood” (1937-38, shown in detail on this page), long on view at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, still has the power to thrill, and now it’s the centerpiece of a traveling show centered on a high point in the artist’s career. harles Fugate has seriously followed his bliss. How else to explain moving across the career continuum, from mechanical engineer to actor.

Who knew that this performer had worked for Burns & McDonnell in the ’90s, “doing support work for their water and wastewater treatment division, metal plating and finishing facilities, and process chemicals division,” he writes in an e-mail. “Which sounds a lot more impressive than the actual work of laying out plumbing piping and selecting fans.”

But then he turned avocation into vocation after landing in a musical production at UMKC. Fugate has become a familiar presence onstage, having appeared in Carousel, Our Town, A Christmas Carol, A Little Night Music, Shipwrecked! An Entertainment, Journey’s End, The Mousetrap, The Real Inspector Hound, Cabaret … and on. In the Rep’s recent production of Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park With George, he portrayed a rival artist to Georges Seurat, and beginning next week, he co-stars in Jeffrey Hatcher’s two-person adaptation of The Turn of the Screw, Henry James’ 1898 ghost story, being staged, in time for Halloween, by Spinning Tree Theatre. A busy guy.

But he took time out to answer our questions.

The Pitch: Where’s home?

Fugate: Kansas City — well, Overland Park (by way of a childhood in Jefferson City, Missouri).

What brought you to KC or kept you here?

My degree and early adult career was in engineering. A job brought me here right out of college. When I dedicated myself to theater full time, the vibrant work and community of theaters and actors — as well as the fact that one could make a really happy life in KC — told me that I was already in the right spot.

What originally lit the theater spark?

Setting the stage: Fugate readies for rehearsal. local high school and I was enthralled. That summer, my parents took me to audition for a children’s show (The Lion Who Wouldn’t) at the city community theater. Sometime after being cast, they threatened to withdraw me from the show. I had a meltdown: crying, begging, pounding the floor. To this day, I couldn’t tell you how I knew that it would be so important to me. But I knew.

How and when did you decide on a life in theater?

Acting and watching theater was always a passion of mine, but as a hobby. After leaving engineering, I was casting about for what was next and found myself in a musical at UMKC. One sunny Saturday afternoon, stuck in a rehearsal hall for eight hours, I looked around this unattractive, stale-smelling room with torn mirror curtains and worn-bare floorboards and thought, “This is it! Of all the more pleasant places I could be today, I’ve never felt more fulfilled than right here. This is where I want to be.”

What’s the best part about what you do?

Creating fullness and life from the written word — getting to know and flesh out the characters as fully realized people with pasts and loves and needs and defeats and successes.

The moments when you are looking into the eyes of another actor and communicating so completely, both as the characters and as the actors, life feels electric in those moments.

That, and they clap for you at the end …

What’s the hardest part?

Schedule. My husband works “normal” daytime hours. When I’m in performances (sometimes rehearsals, too), we get only one night a week at home together. I try to be a little selective these days about too many

projects too close together, and we make the very most of the time I do have off.

What’s the worst thing that has happened during a performance?

I fell off the stage. Shakespeare Festival 2001, The Tempest — water on the deck, sand pit in the middle, oversized galoshes on, my Grandpa had passed away that morning, and I gave myself an extra burst of energy to overcome it all as I ran to place at the front of the stage. I overshot my mark and somersaulted 3 feet down right into the audience.

What’s the best thing?

I was doing Quixote in Man of la Mancha, and a friend whose personal life was in a dark, abusive place came to see it. She was in tears meeting me after: The metaphor that you can rise above and escape the dungeon that is your life — the message she needed most to hear — had landed squarely on her.

How are you affected by the audience?

They are everything. It’s the energy that passes between actor/ensemble and audience that makes live theater what it is. You can feel it in the air when they’re with you — and when they’re not!

What’s the hardest thing you’ve worked on?

Shipwrecked! An Entertainment — The Amazing Adventures of Louis de Rougemont (As Told By Himself) was 90 minutes of pure physical storytelling, and such a journey (of decades) and arc for the character in each performance. It was both the hardest and one of the most fulfilling.

Where did you train?

Acting and scene study with Richard Alan Nichols’ Actors Craft Studio. Voice with Molly Jessup and Jeanne Tomelleri (sadly, both deceased).

Who’s your inspiration?

From a distance, the greats: Meryl Streep, et al. But also people I’ve had the good fortune to work with here: Mark Robbins, Gary Neal Johnson, many others. Seeing working actors of such talent and stature, sometimes over the course of many performances if I’m in there with them, standing on such great technique yet continuing to grow and learn and change — that’s inspiration right there.

What’s one of your all-time favorite shows?

War Horse. Terrific story, coupled with breathtaking puppetry and stagecraft, create theater exactly as theater is meant to be. It was magic.

When will we see you next?

The Turn of The Screw for Spinning Tree (at Just Off Broadway Theatre October 15– November 1). It’s a gothic horror tale, in an adaptation for only two actors. Very dark, very eerie, very disturbing. It’ll be quite a journey.

ike many, I was first exposed to The Miracle Worker — William Gibson’s 1959 script about the deaf and blind Helen Keller and her teacher, Annie Sullivan — in high school English class.

Poor, well-meaning Mrs. Bolhoefer insisted that we act it out in class. Which meant assigning a freshman to voice Helen’s grunts and cries. “Serious” and “respectful” are not adjectives I would use to describe what ensued.

My thanks to the Coterie Theatre for a better education. Its inventive, inclusive production — directed by Jeff Church and associate director Daria LeGrand — provides both a moving tribute to its subjects and an engrossing battle of wills for its two lead actors.

Josephine Pellow earns top honors for her nuanced, physically grueling performance as Helen. She combines the uninhibited energy and experimentation of a child with the dedication and maturity of a stage veteran.

Better yet, she keeps a firm hold on Helen’s hair-trigger volatility, making each sharp turn — from playfulness to desperation, for instance — believable. While Helen’s family sees a “wild bear cub,” we see a shrewd manipulator peddling tantrums for pity.

Vanessa Severo has cunning to match as the indomitable Annie Sullivan, a woman with nothing but disdain for those who would rather treat Helen as a fragile egg than an ordinary child. I’ve written about Severo enough times that I long to abandon ceremony in favor of a check box on each re-

Her performance here deserves the usual adjectives — precise, committed, fierce — but this time she’s also brassy, impatient, even cold. Annie’s ruthless pragmatism may have worked with Helen, but Severo shows us its high cost — to Annie and to those who would get close to her.

Among the supporting cast, Walter Coppage commands attention as the dour Captain Keller, and Jennifer Mays is the right kind of clueless as Helen’s doting mother, Kate. As Helen’s half-brother James, Tony Pulford seems at times anachronistically arch but he hits a more authentic note in later scenes with Severo.

The Coterie’s production is designed to appeal to diverse audiences, offering both American Sign Language interpretation and embedded descriptions of the physical action (drafted by the Coterie and read by the actors themselves) to help blind audience members follow along. Most of the ASL-interpreted productions I’ve attended have followed the same rough format: A lone interpreter, relegated to one side of the stage apron, signs by the dim glow of a music-stand light. Church and the Coterie have pared Gibson’s script into a 75-minute race to the water pump. The cutting is largely successful, preserving the main plot arc while preventing younger audiences from fidgeting in the seats. But some subplots are muddled in the process, most notably the conflict between Captain Keller and his teenage son.

What remains are The Miracle Worker’s universal themes: perseverance over pity, hope as the highest form of love. And the Coterie’s exhausting, grief-laced production has the power to provoke serious contemplation in even the crassest freshmen hearts.

Mrs. Bolhoefer might have called that a miracle. I’d have to agree.

t’s a simple idea: Restaurants around the metro offer a special $5 hamburger for a week — a deal too good to pass up and too cheap for these venues to offer more than once a year.

Well, good news: The Pitch’s Burger Week is back, with more restaurants and more burgers but the same low price.

Is the a catch? Not really. The only limit to this beef bonanza is how many days in a row you can go full Wimpy. the Thunderclaps’ first release, a self-titled, nine-track collection that they put on Bandcamp in August 2014.

“The idea was just to get the songs up there and have something out there for people to listen to,” Jones says. Those songs were recorded on a mini tape deck, the sort of thing reporters might have used in the ’90s for voice memos, he tells me, a laugh in his voice. But the cousins didn’t have any other equipment, and Blunt did his best to rerecord those blown-out songs on his iPhone so he could upload them to the Internet.

“It worked,” Blunt says, grinning, “but not well.”

Friday, when the Thunderclaps release Cookin’ Up a Good Time with a show at MiniBar, they plan to show off their improvements. Jones likens his role in the band to his day job.

“Teaching is, in a way, similar to the effect of delivering a set,” he says. “You have to have things prepared and get lessons across. It’s similar when we play: We have our songs, we’re revved up and ready to go, and we try to have a good time and get into it. Just like I would hope that kids would lose themselves in whatever we’re learning about.”

e don’t practice very often,” Colin Blunt tells me about the Thunderclaps, the two-man band he has formed with his cousin, guitarist Bryce Jones.

Blunt doesn’t mean that the duo wouldn’t benefit from more rehearsal time. It’s just hard for him to get together with Jones, who lives two hours away in Salina.

Blunt, 30, includes Jones, 29, in our conversation via conference call, putting his iPhone on speaker and setting it on the table between us at Mills Record Co., where he asked me to meet him.

From childhood friends to college roommates (when they simultaneously attended the University of Kansas), Blunt and Jones are more convincing as brothers than as first cousins. Together, they steer our conversation into different tangents: Blunt, his gaze fixed on the new-releases wall at Mills, begins asking Jones about various bands; a few seconds later, they’re discussing upcoming gigs. They chat easily and excitedly, and I imagine Jones mirroring Blunt’s sharp grin and frequent eyeglass adjustments.

Though the Thunderclaps have been official since January 2014, Blunt and Jones cut their teeth together in a Lawrence band called Pecos Bill. That group disbanded in 2011, after the cousins had graduated college and Jones had returned to his native Salina to teach high school English. Blunt, who had previously played guitar and bass, stuck around Lawrence and picked up the drums, he says, mostly as a new instrument to keep him occupied.

“I fell in love with it,” Blunt says. “I had no idea what I was doing, but I quickly learned that the key to being a good drummer is just playing really loud. I was just jamming with some nerds who wanted a drummer, and I was on a borrowed drum set, which is actually still the drum set I use. And then, you know, whenever Bryce would come down for this or that, we would always play together.”

After Blunt and Jones amassed a few songs, they briefly toyed with the idea of forming a full band or at least attempting to coordinate a more stable schedule.

“At a certain point, I was like, ‘I wish you lived in Kansas City, and I wish we had a bass player and this and that,’” Blunt says. “But then I just kind of realized we didn’t need that. We work best when it’s just us, and even with the distance, we still get to do exactly what we want to do.”

Blunt has a rather rakish look. Something about his wavy pompadour hairstyle, olive skin and glinting green eyes suggests a man who would make a convincing werewolf.

as Blunt converted from man to beast, his wiry limbs tapping out tight drumbeats and cymbal flashes. Jones’ reverb-soaked guitar chords curled around those notes, fuzzy and imperfect, a mix of ’60s-era surf and garage-born rockabilly. Jones’ singing, a jangly, quirky tenor, bounced merrily through The Thunderclaps Friday, October 16, at MiniBar lyrics that called the listener to shake it, shake it, shake it some more. The set begged a dance floor.

On the band’s newest release, an EP called Cookin’ Up a Good Time, this energy translates loud and clear. It comprises only three songs — my only grievance — but it’s the perfect introduction to this enigmatic duo. It’s easy to imagine the broad appeal of the Thunderclaps: Their sound seems to pull in equal

Blunt (left) and Jones, shaking it. parts old-school rock and roll — the cousins name-check Bo Diddley, Fats Domino and Johnny Burnette — and a certain devil-maycare, DIY attitude. And, Jones says, the longdistance partnership means that songwriting becomes a somewhat hodgepodge process.

“When we started this, I didn’t really have much experience writing,” Jones admits. “And still, our songs are nothing fancy — they’re just rock-and-roll songs. You lose somebody, you get somebody, you lose your keys, you find your keys. It’s just fun stuff.

I’d write all night and I’d play by myself, and usually anything that I think is worthwhile and completed, I pass it along to Colin. Then it runs through his set, and then we work it out together — usually over e-mail.”

It may not sound ideal, the cousins agree, but their long history means that they have a shorthand for communicating. And besides, they tell me, they’ve come a long way since

axahatchee’s Katie Crutchfield is a bit of an anomaly in the popular singersongwriter landscape. Her latest record, Ivy Tripp (released in April on Merge Records), finds the Alabama-born artist — and former frontwoman of P.S. Eliot, the poppunk band she formed with her twin sister, Allison — spreading out her most honest self-assessments in songs that have a Lilith Fair-era nakedness to them.

Ahead of Waxahatchee’s show at the Jackpot Music Hall Sunday, October 18, I chatted with Crutchfield from her New York home about the path to Ivy Tripp.

The Pitch: Ivy Tripp is your third album. How do you feel you’ve grown?

Crutchfield: When I made [my first album] American Weekend [in 2012], it was just like a fluke thing. I made a solo record in a week because I had a really prolific week. Everything since then has been a little more deliberate.

With Ivy Tripp, I really went wild. I wanted to take all the time in the world to try everything and use different instruments on every song and build these big, weird songs. That was a really fun and new experience for me, and it was a really different approach than what I had done on my previous albums or even in my previous bands.

So I feel like maybe I’m a little bit more open to experimentation now. You grow the more you play music and the more that you write.

Your twin sister, Allison, played with you in your previous bands — the Ackleys and P.S. Eliot — before starting her own band, Swearin’.

How have you adjusted to the separate creative projects on which you’ve each embarked?

It’s funny — she’s in the next room. We live together. We learned to play music together. I liked to play guitar and write songs, and she played drums — and now she plays everything.

But basically, the songwriting process with me is no different than when we were 14 and sitting in our parents’ garage making music. A lot

of the creative process now isn’t that different than it was because the songwriting process has always been mine — that’s a private thing that I do by myself.

When we moved to New York, she wanted to do a band that was separate from me. That made sense because we’re twins, and that’s something that twins struggle with anyway, having their own thing and identity and separating themselves from each other.

Your ex-boyfriend, Keith Spencer, is one of your primary collaborators and the drummer for Waxahatchee. Tell me about the dynamic of being in a creative partnership with someone you used to be romantically involved with.

It’s funny because no one ever asks me about that, and I feel like maybe it’s a bold thing to ask, but I have no problem talking about it. I appreciate you asking because my relationship with Keith was — and is — really important to me. For both of us, what we really ended up getting out of that relationship is the creative connection. I’ve never been very good at collaborating with people because songwriting is such a personal thing that I do alone. It’s hard for me to sit down and do that with another person. I kind of clam up or I’m in my own head. And Keith just tried to get me out of my comfort zone with that, and together we’ve come up with some of the greatest music I’ve ever been a part of. I feel like he is super-talented and just instrumental in Ivy Tripp.

Basically, we had a moment in our relationship where we both realized that the romantic aspects weren’t working, and the creative aspects were too valuable to us to let the whole thing fall apart. We broke up and then went on tour together for a whole year. It wasn’t an easy thing to go through, but we worked through it, and we’re still really close. I’m happy that the worst of it is over.

Niche turns up the volume for the EDM community.

ou would never guess what they keep on the second floor of the Uptown Arts Bar. It’s not office space or stock for the bar or old furniture. No, in the 600-square-foot room, there’s another venue: an electronic dance club called Niche.

The bar is small, but that’s fine because at Niche, drinks are a bonus — the real draw is the sound system: a state-of-the-art setup that’s the brainchild of DJs Ben Dorrell and Brandon Dremann. Dorrell and Dremann call it Meta Hi-Fi, and it’s a rectangular fortress, taking up a third of the room. Two pristine turntables sit on top of four subwoofers — loudspeakers — that Dorrell, a cabinetmaker by trade, and Dremann built themselves.

“We built them using these designs by a guy named Bill Fitzmaurice,” Dremann says, arms crossed, gazing at his work.

“His plans recommended two of them for a 200-person venue, and obviously we used four of them in this room, which probably fits 50 at most.”

“I wanted a small space,” Dorrell adds.

“That was always the intention. I wanted to focus on quality over quantity, and I felt like a smaller room would give me that.”

Dorrell is referring to sound quality, which is crucial for anyone with a modicum of interest in electronic and house music. The Meta Hi-Fi speakers, Dremann adds, are designed to hit as low and hard as possible.

“It’s deeper sounds that we play here,” Dremann says, “and they require a sound system that is the second half of music. It’s very ear-opening to hear music that you make on this system. You don’t get that anywhere else, not even the Midland. There’s a lot of pressure — like, literal pressure — with the brick walls and smallness of this room. Your whole body is included in the feeling.”

“At Niche, we want to give emerging artists a platform to put on shows with top-of-theline equipment. That’s something that can be next to impossible for an unestablished artist. It would take them years to play at Sandstone [Cricket Wireless Amphitheater] or a place like that. But here, they’ve got the equipment — and a home.”

Dremann and Dorrell, it should be noted, are a far cry from Skrillex-variety EDM DJs. Niche isn’t a rave scene, they insist; it’s a

circles. Thanks to the Internet community of music nerds, Shy Boys became a beloved — if thoroughly under-the-radar — album of 2014. Live, it’s easy to understand why: The trio has mastered, with an unsuspecting charm, the jangly sound of 1960s surf and given it a fresh spin with gauzy reverb and crooked chords. Guitarist and lead singer Collin Rausch’s delicate, precious falsetto is inseparable from these subtle layers. In the last year, Shy Boys has embarked on two successful tours: a spring run along the West Coast and a summer set of dates opening for Starfucker. The band heads back into the studio to record a follow-up LP in December. We’re only too happy to have this band on the rise celebrating the best with us Thursday.

“The way I try to describe it to people is this: The lead instrument is the bass, whether it’s a kick drum or bass line, and if you don’t have that impact, then you’re just missing it,” Dorrell says. “There was nowhere in town for us to play that kind of music — bass music — and it just had to be done. I couldn’t afford to just buy a good system, so my only option was to do it myself.”

Dorrell began working on the speakers in November 2012; nearly a year and a half later, in April 2014, Niche officially became a venue, with weekly DJ nights on most Saturdays. Dorrell, of course, was comfortable at his tables, but more often, he played host to the burgeoning community of up-andcoming electronic artists — and sometimes national and international DJs. And starting this month, Niche isex expanding its calendar: Dremann is booking the space on Thursdays and Fridays, as well as the occasional Wednesday.

“Having this space open five nights a month was not reaching all the community we could reach,” Powers says. “The launch party on October 17 is really about celebrating Niche and continuing to expand on what we do here.”

“It’s always about the community,” Dorrell adds. “The sound system is equally important to the people that show up, the bartenders, the DJs that come, the people that make the music for the DJs. All of that stuff is on an equal plane. The room, the vibe, everything should be cohesive — I want the experience to be the reason you go.”

Rex Hobart & the Misery Boys

When Rex Hobart & the Misery Boys released Long Shot of Hard Stuff in March, the album surprised a lot of people — in particular, Scott (Rex’s actual first name) Hobart. It was the first album from him and his band since 2005, and one he had never expected to release, despite its having been written over the past decade. But when local roots label Little Class Records approached him about new material, he couldn’t pass up the opportunity to get back in the studio, and the resulting collection of songs on Long Shot of Hard Stuff makes the wait worth it. Expect Hobart to deliver us to honky-tonk heaven Thursday — and even the anti-country sticks-in-the-mud should have a hard time not enjoying his cowboy spirit.

Music Forecast Lord Huron, José González

If you get déjà vu when you listen to Lord Huron’s Strange Trails, you’re not alone. Something about the lush instrumentation and delicate folk pop recalls the celestial indie groups of the late aughts (Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, etc.). That doesn’t mean Lord Huron doesn’t have anything fresh to offer; the songs on Strange Trails often present as gauzy overtures to gorgeous, reverb-drenched movements. Kelly is at her best when she’s ruminating over the chinks in her armor — “Should’ve Been Us” is a first-rate heartbreak ballad — but that doesn’t seem to be her schtick. Rhiannon Giddens was a force as a core member of Grammy Award-winning roots group Carolina Chocolate Drops. As a solo artist, though, her star shines even brighter. The album’s 11 songs are all covers, but they have been given such original treatment that you would hardly recognize them. Prepare your soul for some stirring.

Bennett’s latest project is the June-released Surf, which is credited to Bennett’s live band, Donnie Trumpet & the Social Experiment. With his voice and direction sprinkled throughout Surf, it might as well be credited to Bennett. Don’t miss this rising star.

Oh, how we’ve missed the precious, childlike falsetto of Passion Pit’s Michael Angelakos in the years since 2012’s brilliant Gossamer.

Angelakos is back, with the April-released Kindred, giving us the soaring ’90s synths and blissful power-pop chords that make our hearts lighter. For what it’s worth, Angelakos seems a great deal happier than he did on Gossamer and its predecessor, Manners (2009).

Kindred is a sugar rush of positive pop, and Angelakos has never sounded better.

Steel guitarist David Williams has long been a fixture in the local roots-and-folk scene. But his productivity dropped sharply in 2014, when a neuropathic condition prevented him from performing and working. Sunday, an eclectic mix of musicians gets together to support Williams with a four-hour benefit: local blues heroine Kelley Hunt, along with singersongwriter Tom Hall, Mike Smith and the Sax Pistols, and the Promise Makers. Blues guitarist Dan Bliss and jazz guitarist Rod Fleeman perform a set together, and Boko Maru reunites for the cause. Gay Times Dear Dan: I’m a gay man who is ready to start

cheating on my boyfriend. We’ve had a wonderful relationship — full of respect, affection, support and fun — for three and a half years.
