Marni Carlson

Timeless

Marni Carlson’s Thistle transcends the usual vintage appeal.

M

arni Carlson talks about her vintage 1962 Layton camper as though it’s a member of the family. She and her husband drove to Arkansas to retrieve the vehicle in August, and they’ve now completely remodeled the interior, transforming it from camper to, as she puts it, “glam-per.”

For Carlson, it was love at first sight.

“His name is Puddles,” she told me when I stopped by her Roeland Park home one evening so she could show me around the silver, ham-shaped vessel parked in the driveway.

The night was cool, but the camper quickly became toasty as Carlson cranked up a space heater. She said she had listened to almost every World Series game in the small space, stretched out on the bed, with a pot of chili and snacks on the removable kitchen table (which slides under the bed when not in use).

“It’s not only that the Royals won when I listened in here,” she said. “But they lost when I watched inside — and they lost bad.”

Puddles may be small, but he’s stylish, thanks to his new owner. Since 2010, Carlson has run Thistle, a vintage store in the River Market, which she describes as “curated whimsy, from the sublime to the ridiculous.”

Carlson’s fondness for the midcenturyWestern aesthetic showed. Puddles was

decked out in his pastoral finest. A cookie jar resembling a covered wagon sat by the sink. A painting of an American Indian on horseback, his arms spread wide and his face to the sky, hung on the wall. Postcards from Yosemite National Park dangled above the bed. Every item tells a story. Carlson explained that you could determine the age of the American Indian blanket covering the bed by the intricacy of the macramé fringe.

Still, Carlson isn’t afraid to hopscotch among eras. “These cups were a perfect match with this vintage jar,” she said, holding up a pale-turquoise drinking glass, “but they’re from Ikea.” She told me that people she encounters are hesitant to combine the old with the new, believing perhaps that they need permission to decorate in a certain way. She told me that some customers shop for what TV shows such as American Pickers have said they “should” like, instead of buying what actually excites them.

Carlson dealt with a bit of an identity crisis herself when Thistle first moved to its current location, across from River Market Antiques.

She felt compelled to make her shop resemble the popular three-story mall, when in fact she felt more content being her unconventional self.

Thistle 122 West Fifth Street, 816-221-7467 “People are insecure about what they do with their own space,” she said. “But vintage doesn’t have to look like your grandmother’s attic. You should see people’s personalities in their homes.”

The next morning, I stopped by Thistle shortly after the store had opened. Shoppers browsed for holiday gifts as I stopped to admire Carlson’s collection of vintage salt and pepper shakers, which are displayed prominently in the center of the store but are not for sale. She had recently used the shakers to decorate a tiny Christmas tree, which sat next to a sky-blue typewriter a few feet away.

“I wish I could keep all of it,” she said, when I asked which items were her favorites.

“The highest compliment I get is that I curate well — it’s not a lot of crap. Then again, some people would say it’s nothing but crap. But if you shop vintage and know vintage, you know it’s good stuff.”

She pointed out a colorful array of Pyrex, noting that her younger customers like to collect it. One set of gilded bar glasses looked like

it had been snatched from the set of Mad Men. Several boxes held what she called “a treasure trove of oddball junk” that would be ideal for steampunk art: old gears, watch parts — things you’d never find if you were looking for them.

Carlson also had some one-of-a-kind treasures to show me, the most moving of which was a photograph of African-American soldiers, returning home after World War II, near 18th Street and Vine, the packed street lined with businesses that no longer exist.

She’s proud to display this piece of the city’s history — in fact, she calls herself an “unofficial ambassador for Kansas City.” (When anyone asks for a recommendation of where to eat or drink, she directs them to her favorite spots: the Local Pig and Thou Mayest.)

Carlson calls herself a dreamer, with a goal of acquiring a few more campers to create a mobile vintage mall. One way or another, she plans to take her antiques show on the road next year. And when she’s not working, she wants to take Puddles to Colorado to have a good time. Anything for family.

T

he first First Friday of 2016 is also the first day of the year, so lots of galleries are taking the holiday for what it is, a day off, instead of launching straight into the new. But more than a few spaces are open in the Crossroads for the evening, and you can probably get to most of them — and have room enough to see the art, as though you and way fewer people than the norm had made a group appointment.

So what’s new? Cuatro Estaciones (Four Seasons) by Claudia García Peña opens at Todd Weiner Gallery (115 West 18th Street) with a 5–10 p.m. reception. Peña is originally from Mexico, studied at the Academy of San Carlos and the National Institute of Fine Arts in Mexico City, and has worked with Diego Rivera’s grandson to teach mural-making skills to young people in her native land.

When she came to Kansas City, now her home, she experienced something new: our very varying weather. So, for this exhibition, she presents a collection of modernist takes on the four seasons, using a limited palette to express how summer, winter, spring and fall can be felt as subtle variations of one another.

The Leedy-Voulkos Art Center (2012 Baltimore) is opening two new shows with a 6–9 p.m. reception: A to Z and More, by Charlie Paynter, and Love, Loss and Violence, a new series of paintings by Ada Koch, begun after the Boston Marathon bombing and in response to her fears of her children being sent to war. Paynter, meanwhile, is approaching 80 years of age and continues to make sculptures out of various found bits and pieces.

January’s New Year’s Day First Friday turns the Crossroads into something like a secret corridor.

We’re looking forward to seeing what he’s been up to.

Two exhibitions continue in the front and main galleries at Leedy-Voulkos. Take time to immerse yourself in Gloria Baker Feinstein’s luminous black-and-white photographs in The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, then play tricks on your eyes staring at the glitter that coats Dylan Mortimer’s sculptural works in Cure.

Plenum Space (504 East 18th Street) features Body of Thought by graphic designer Lance Pufahl, who uses bright colors to explore differences in how our minds interpret seemingly simple objects and ideas. This gallery is open 6–10 p.m. First Friday, then by appointment the rest of the month.

Pop Up Art Studios (1910 Walnut) will be open 5–10 p.m., as usual, with the requisite array of artists, performers and musicians.

Livid History

S

omething awful must have happened to Quentin Tarantino in the past couple of years. The writer-director’s new The Hateful Eight echoes Pier Paolo Pasolini’s punishing Salò — it’s a perfectly realized indictment of the malign foundations that prop up so much of history, written big and blood-red across the breathtaking, snow-covered hills and plains of America the Graveyard. Tarantino’s largely set-bound Western takes deliberate care to show the lies that underpin so many period pieces, which try to coddle audiences with onscreen surrogates who incarnate contemporary perspectives.

Tarantino has always had a gift for the way that words reshape life. Here he fixes an unforgiving eye on who we are as people and the distance between that abject truth and the narratives we construct around ourselves.

He eschews much of the leavening (and distancing) material that allowed his previous two historical fantasies, Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained, to become international hits. Instead, he confronts the utter fucked-up-itude of now — racist impasses,

centuries-old resentments, “heritage” as a euphemism for unyieding bigotry — with fury and disgust.

The setting, Minnie’s Haberdashery, stands alongside a moderately treacherous pass. A monument to business ingenuity and Manifest Destiny politics — not to mention an evocation of every cinematic Wild West trading post, despite being as spacious as a Swiss chalet — it is sensibly built and sturdy, capable of weathering the occasional blizzard. And the sundry bunch who have sought refuge in it while waiting out a particularly nasty storm would be just fine, if they didn’t each embody America’s intricate web of success, horror and guilt, each a dog at another dog’s throat.

Everything pivots around a condemned woman arriving by stagecoach, Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh, goddess of the game pod, having a fantastic year), and the bounty hunter (Kurt Russell) determined to bring her in alive. She’s a battered and bruised backwoods master of emotional chess, playing a long game against law en-

forcement (Walton Goggins), Civil War veterans from both sides (Samuel L. Jackson and Bruce Dern), and a natty hangman (Tim Roth). But with a relentless storm and other strangers introduced into the mix, what starts as a chamber piece with a visual sensibility worthy of Barry Lyndon becomes a pitiless survey of the depths of human depravity.

Earlier this year, after Tarantino appeared at a Black Lives Matter rally, he was denounced by police organizations across the nation. It’s no coincidence that The Hateful Eight is charged with more race and class consciousness than any film he has made since Jackie Brown, and it’s no surprise that he’s going to put you through it. The Hateful Eight is a bloodcurdling scream from the guy who has been the life of the cinematic party for more than 20 years, and it’s going to piss off everyone. Racists and anti-racists will be equally horrified. You will identify with characters who make your skin crawl. Your heroes will disgrace you. The ideological adversaries whom Tarantino creates do not offer you the courtesy of being one-dimensional. Even

The result is the most cathartic American film since The Paperboy, though in truth, its maelstrom of racist hostility and eruptive bloodshed make that film seem almost demure. And though you may need to spend some time in a progressive, pleasure-positive utopia afterward to feel at least a little OK about the world — I recommend Magic Mike XXL — no one interested in the legacy of national identity should miss this vicious jewel of a film.

uestion: What is the biggest difference between the two-month-old Dempsey’s Burger Pub in Westport and the Lawrence original?

Answer: Customers.

I’ve never been in the Lawrence venue when the saloon and burger emporium wasn’t bustling, jarringly noisy and vibrating with upbeat energy.

The Kansas City Dempsey’s, not so much.

After four meals in the place, in the space formerly occupied by the short-lived Blanc Burgers + Bottles, I never found it to be buzzing with activity or vivacity. In fact, there was such an air of languor and — dare I say — ennui about it that I found myself calling it Dumpsey’s.

Maybe it just needs to catch on with the right people. The burgers are reasonably priced if not aggressively creative. The service is friendly and attentive, although it’s easy to be attentive when there’s only one occupied table in the dining room. The bartending staff, including former Rieger Hotel Grill & Exchange mixologist Jenn Tosatto, is first-rate.

Still, at this point, the Westport Dempsey’s is a wallflower among the entertainment district’s more lively restaurants. Is it trying too hard or not hard enough? I can’t decide. Different staffers have told me that business is picking up, but the two dining areas, paneled in old barn wood, were pretty much vacant on each of my visits.

The uncomplicated menu here is nearly identical to that of the Lawrence location, but some tweaking of the local Dempsey’s is in order. When the food at this booze-andburger bistro is good, it’s very good. When it isn’t, it’s dreadful.

Only five starter options are available, the highlight being a trio of beef sliders, topped with shallot marmalade and sharp cheddar.

The inscrutably weird “bacon flight” — slices of pork poking out of three small cups filled with, respectively, an intense Guinness reduction, a supposedly “spicy” beer cheese and a chipotle aioli — was neither tasty nor relevant.

There are chicken wings (what burger joint doesn’t have those?) in two flavors: a roasted-garlic sauce that isn’t very garlicky and a grilled-pineapple glaze that’s not fruity, smoky, sweet or spicy. The latter, in fact, tasted a lot like the roasted garlic wings, but in a different shade of burnt umber.

One of my dining companions, a vegetarian, liked the fried quinoa balls served on skewers with a sweet chili aioli. But I thought

nine bucks was exorbitant for an appetizer that tasted like fried sawdust. There’s a quinoa burger patty, too, which was slightly better than the meatless balls I had tried. The pickled carrot-jalapeño slaw gave it a lot more punch (and style) than the meatless patty deserved.

Dempsey’s offers 12 burgers (two are meatless; the portobello sandwich is also labeled gluten-free) plus an off-menu weekly special. I tried the featured “Up Down” burger, which paid homage to the Big Boy burgers of the 1960s: two patties layered with cheese, tomato, lettuce and house-made Thousand Island dressing on a brioche bun. It came very close to its inspiration and was delicious.

Then again, there’s not much on the Dempsey’s menu that’s going to fall into the healthy-dining category: There are three salads, and one of them has a burger patty on top.

By far the greasiest — and most disappointing — nonburger choice is a basket of fish and chips. The fries far outclassed the tough and chewy black-cod filet, which came heavily armored in a peppery battered crust that had spent far too long in the fryer. I like the idea of beer-battered fish in a restaurant that serves so many varieties of ale, but this wasn’t what I was expecting.

One of the featured desserts here (in fact, the only sweet that isn’t a shake or a float) is a chocolate salted-caramel pie — made inhouse — that wasn’t available on any of my visits.

“We just sell out of it so fast,” a server explained.

If it’s that good, I hope I get the opportunity to try it someday. After all, a dozen burgers, five kinds of fries, and greasy fish do not a hit restaurant make. And unless Dempsey’s ups its game, it might stay in the Dumpseys for a long time.

Toasting the best moments of the local craft-cocktail scene in 2015

ou know what I love best about drinking in this city? All the opportunities to do it well. Take it from the woman who has happily — in the name of cultural significance and hard-nosed journalism — swirled, sipped and shot her way through nearly every drink menu in the metro. It’s a good time to be thirsty in Kansas City.

A few talented bartenders have made ripples beyond the local waters. In March, Evan McConnell’s showcase cocktail at the Patrón Aficionado exhibition — a Patrón and United States Bartenders’ Guild partnership event — earned him a spot on a “continuing education” trip to the Patrón Hacienda in Jalisco, Mexico. In June, McConnell — and a host of other bartenders from around the country — took a tequila sabbatical with one of the spirit’s top producers.

In August, Andrew Olsen won the Beefeater MIXLDN Regional Heat Bartending Competition that was held at Affäre. (Yours truly was a judge at that one.) Olsen beat six of his local compatriots as part of the Paris of the Plains Cocktail Festival in September, going on to compete against regional winners from Chicago, New York, Los Angeles and Seattle in the Beefeater MIXLDN National

Final. Though Olsen didn’t win, his elaborate cocktail, the Refrain, still lives in memory. (It features Beefeater, clarified lime juice and citrus-blossom syrup, stirred and poured over Pernod ice cubes, topped with foamed Suze, and served with a toasted-almond whitechocolate truffle.)

Brock Schulte, the bar manager at the Rieger Hotel Grill & Exchange and founding partner at consulting company Liquid Minded Concepts, was one of three area winners in the regional qualifying round of the Bacardi Legacy Bartending Competition, held in October at the Jacobson. Schulte won for a cocktail called Birds of a Feather — a rum flip featuring Bacardi Ocho Años (the company’s 8-year rum), Pineau des Charentes (a French fortified wine with pear notes) and Schulte’s own wine-poached pear butter.

In November, Schulte went on to compete in the Regional Bacardi Legacy Finals at the Bacardi Distillery in La Galarza, Mexico. He didn’t win that round, but we’re still proud of him for spreading the KC gospel.

A few weeks later, he poured us sample after sample of homegrown whiskey as we prepared for The Pitch’s Bacon and Bourbon Festival in April. And in June, Olsen announced that he was migrating once more — to Colby and Megan Garrelts’ lauded Westport restaurant, Bluestem, where he assumed the position of bar manager. When I see him there, he looks happy. (I’m usually happy there, too, but that’s because I’m drinking.)

Il Lazzarone opened in March, but Laura Wagner and Andrew Iwersen — the River Market restaurant’s respective bar manager and beer director — have been on board just since mid-autumn. In November, I stopped in to get their takes on Il Lazzarone’s impressive amaro program, with more than 30 bottles jammed on the shelves. Wagner, Iwersen and I tasted through some of the oddest ones before the two riffed on amaro-inspired cocktails.

I first wrote about Erik Mariscal in January, when he was holding down the bar at Local Pig in Westport. I wasn’t the only one who was enchanted by Mariscal’s cheflike approach to building a cocktail. I still dream about his Skips a Beet, with fresh-squeezed beet juice and gin — but, alas, nothing is forever. Local Pig in Westport closed in September. Following a brief stint at the Jacobson,

In June, the 38-seat W bar in downtown Lee’s Summit opened, with longtime barman Mike Strohm at the helm. His drinks are visually stunning, but what is most impressive is the depth of his creations. Strohm makes almost all his menu ingredients, including syrups, bitters, vermouths and tonics. He wants to build a greenhouse so that he can source all his bar produce, and he eventually plans beehives on the roof of the W’s building.

If that’s not ambition, then the dictionary will need to revise the meaning.

In November, J. Rieger & Co. Distillery in the East Bottoms celebrated its first anniversary, although it’s likely that co-founders and managing partners Andy Rieger and Ryan Maybee didn’t even bother to take a victory shot.

The young company has had plenty of other milestones over the last year, including the release of two new products. In July,

we delighted in J. Rieger & Co.’s Midwestern Premium Vodka, a blended-grain liquor.

Then, in October, the company announced its Midwestern Dry Gin, from a recipe taught to head distiller Nathan Perry by Tanqueray’s former master distiller Tom Nichol. I’m not one to turn down a craft cocktail, but the Rieger gin is so balanced and so packed with fragrant botanicals that I prefer to enjoy this spirit with just a few cubes of ice and a fresh squeeze of lime.

In 2016, we can look forward to a a few more products from J. Rieger & Co., including a Caffe Amaro — a coffee liqueur produced in partnership with Thou Mayest Coffee Roasters — and a limited-run Black Label whiskey, aged in 100-year-old, 130-gallon sherry botas (barrels) pulled from the Williams & Humbert solera in Spain.

Also coming in the new year: Tom’s Town Distilling Co., located at 1701 Main (The Pitch’s former offices) and opening to the public in January; Restless Spirits Distilling, opening in North Kansas City in February; and Lifted Spirits, which opens in the Crossroads in April.

Speaking of Jax, let’s take a moment to discuss Kenny Cohrs’ 3975 — perhaps my favorite drink of 2015. I enjoy just about anything this man sets in front of me — call it a mix of his Disney-prince-like charm and redoubtable bar knowledge — but this particular drink, which made its debut on Cohrs’ November cocktail list, will carry me through the cold months. A winter warmer like no other, this adult hot chocolate features a house-made habanero cordial, pineapple syrup, coconut milk, Aztec chocolate (a proprietary blend that Cohrs has concocted) and Del Maguey Crema de Mezcal. The 3975 is garnished with a brûléed, house-made marshmallow. On any given day, I might choose this drink over the company of friends and family.

Boulevard beer in aluminum, new breweries and more from the year in beer

an do. That was the mantra adopted by Boulevard Brewing Co. in 2015. John McDonald, the founder of Kansas City’s biggest brewery, broke the aluminum news in The Pitch a year ago November. By April, the first six-packs of a new IPA, Heavy Lifting, had started showing up in liquor stores.

Twelve-ounce cans of Unfiltered Wheat, PopUp IPA and Ginger-Lemon Radler followed, with more planned for 2016.

Boulevard wasn’t the only local brewery to get into the canning business. Cinder Block Brewery released a limited run of its core beers in four-packs of 16-ounce cans, with plans for more in the future.

In Manhattan, Tallgrass Brewing Co. moved into a 60,000-square-foot production facility and opened the Tallgrass Tap House in that college community’s downtown. Unfortunately, Kansas’ biggest suds maker announced that it would discontinue five beers in February 2016: Ethos IPA, Velvet Rooster Belgian-Style Tripel, 16-Bit Double Pale Ale, Halcyon Unfiltered Wheat and Ginger Peach Saison. Snuffing out the rooster? Damn.

Tallgrass announced three new beers for its 2016 16-ounce-can lineup: Top Rope IPA, Songbird Saison and Half-Pipe Tart Pale Ale. Also on the way are four new Explorer Series specialty brews: the Grizz imperial IPA, Sweet Tooth salted caramel Belgian dark strong ale, Biere de Mars and Raspberry Jam Berliner weisse.

Kansas City’s brewery boom continued with several openings: Crossroads Arts District neighbors Border Brewing Co., in February, and Double Shift Brewing Co., in July.

Outside that area: Red Crow Brewing Co. in Spring Hill, Kansas; and Crane Brewing Co., in Raytown.

Crane started distributing to liquor stores and bars on the Kansas side of the state line in December. Missouri is still waiting, due to bureaucratic red tape.

Stockyards Brewing Co. signed a lease in May on the iconic former Golden Ox restaurant building in the West Bottoms, and construction is ongoing. Stockyards owner Greg Bland has assembled a team that includes Micah Weichert, brewmaster at Gordon Biersch, to help launch his brewery.

In March, The Pitch broke the story that longtime McCoy’s brewer Keith Thompson would team up with Room 39’s Ted Habiger and Rich Kasyjanski to open Brewery Emperial at 1829 Oak, on the same block as Grinders.

Construction work is under way.

Jeff “Stretch” Rumaner expanded his Grinders empire to Leavenworth, Kansas, taking over the High Noon Saloon. Grinders High Noon opened in late October. At last word, the brewery side of the business is still being sorted out.

This was the year that Boulevard gave us two Love Child beers (Nos. 5 and 6), another Crown Town Ale (this time celebrating the Royals’ World Series victory), a draft-only Deep Dive Wet-Hopped Ale, and the Calling IPA (which is so good that we named it the Best New Boulevard Beer in The Pitch’s 2015 Best of Kansas City issue).

Boulevard also announced big changes for 2016, including the retirement of its awardwinning ZON Belgian-Style Witbier. Don’t fret, though. The 2016 calendar is full of new releases, including two versions of Rye-onRye — notably, Rye-on-Rye-on-Rye. “The idea is to take Rye-on-Rye out of the Templeton Rye barrels it’s been aging in and put it in fresh Templeton Rye barrels — so kind of a double aging, in a sense,” ambassador brewer Jeremy Danner told The Pitch. “It won’t be blended with fresh beer at all. It’ll be 100 percent barrel-aged. It’ll be boozy but cool.”

Boulevard will also get an updated look in 2016, with a revamped logo and packaging.

And it’s tripling the size of its distribution center with a move to a new 182,000-squarefoot warehouse space on 87th Street in the Three Trails Industrial Park.

Cinder Block, Torn Label, Martin City Brewing Co. and Crane Brewing started distributing beers.

Cinder Block started furnishing bars with beer in February and opened a patio and event space in July at its North Kansas City location.

Torn Label began putting out beer in Missouri in January and in Kansas in March; opened a tasting room in early July; and re-

leased its first bottled beer, KC P’Rye’d rye ale, in August.

Martin City Brewing started distributing 750 ml bottles of Quid Feci, a tart cherry saison; Coming Undone, a complex Flanders red-style beer; Dream Quest golden brett; and Colour Out of Space brett stout.

Big Rip released more bottled brews, including Twins Cherry Cheesecake (just one reason that we gave the award for Best Dessert Beers to Big Rip in our Best of Kansas City issue), for sale in its taproom. It’s dessert in a bottle.

COLLABORATIONS

Boulevard proved that it plays well with others, working with Florida’s Cigar City Brewing on Collaboration No. 5 Tropical Pale Ale, with Sporting Kansas City on Sporting Saison (on draft at Sporting Park), with St. Louis’ Side Project Cellar on Show-Me Sour and with the Chipotle Cultivate Festival on Cultivate Farmhouse Ale. Also in the spirit of togetherness, Torn Label teamed up with Crane for Omega Saison and also partnered with the gang at Screenland theaters for the release of Ravager White IPA, to coincide with the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Waldo bottle shop Bier Station joined forces with Martin City Brewing for its first beer release, Station to Station Berliner Weisse.

Chef Celina Tio collaborated with the Michigan-based Jolly Pumpkin on Forgotten Tales of the Last Gypsy Blender, Series 1, Volume 1. Jolly Pumpkin’s Ron Jeffries was so pleased with the oak-aged sour saison, brewed with mango and tamarind and some rye, that he decided to make it a national release.

Rock & Run Brewery celebrated its second anniversary in Liberty. Green Room marked its third anniversary but lost brewer Chris Flenker to Iowa’s Toppling Goliath Brewing. The brewpub rallied, bringing on Kalim Kazmi and Noah Kent.

Root Sellers, makers of Pedal Hard Ginger Beer and Row Hard Root Beer, announced that it had bought Columbia, Missouri’s Rock Bridge Brewing Co. in April.

Whole Foods opened an Olathe store in April with a taproom devoted to local beers.

Yard House opened a taphouse in the Power & Light District in April. The old .390 Club at Kauffman Stadium was transformed into Craft & Draft, featuring more than 75 craft beers, just in time for opening day of this magical Royals season. (I’ve been — it’s fantastic.)

In May, the Kansas City, Missouri, City Council made it easier for nanobreweries to open in business districts.

By the end of the year, the Barley Bus was offering weekend rides to local breweries.

Finally, in one of the coolest moments of 2015, the Kansas City beer community, namely the members of Beer Tasting Kansas City and the Screenland crew, rallied behind Dan Simmons, whose wife unexpectedly died in November. don’t take notes at every meal. Sometimes I go out to eat just to eat and I leave my reporter’s notebook at home.

I’m a believer in Gore Vidal’s mantra: “To write is to erase from memory.” That has been true in my case, though I do remember most of the weird dinners over the years (the shortlived Northland restaurant in the former dirty bookstore comes to mind) and a few disappointing ones. But great meals still stand out.

They’re like short but hot love affairs: The high points linger, though the nuances are lost. With that in mind, here are a few of my favorite dinner affairs of the past year.

Beef BourguIgnon Charisse 1006 Walnut Jason Craine’s version of the classic French braised-beef dish “as prepared in Burgundy” is a tender stew — and very labor-intensive.

Craine starts with Cedar River chuck (and usually scraps of filet) marinated in red wine, dusted with flour and herbs de Provence that are seared with chopped bacon and cloves of garlic. The meat is then simmered for several hours in red wine and a veal-stock reduction.

Several other steps follow, but the finished product, in a glossy reduction that’s slightly

Pot roast naChos summit grill & Bar, in Waldo 500 West 75th street I stopped ordering nachos years ago when the simple starter of fried tortilla chips, jalapeño peppers and real cheese became an unrecognizable mound of salty chips smothered in a grotesque amalgam of ingredients way too heavy on dairy products. That’s precisely what Summit Grill executive chef and coowner Domhnall Molloy didn’t want. “There’s still a perception that customers are going to get a pile of corn chips with all this stuff on them,” he says.

That’s why Molloy puts a real Midwestern spin on the appetizer — as satisfying as a meal — serving individual fried tortillas topped with fork-tender pot roast, cheddar and pepper jack cheeses, a chipotle cream sauce and house-made corn relish. Yes, it’s still a lot of stuff, but it’s fresh and very good.

I’m a fast eater. Sloppy, too. But gulping down food is perfectly acceptable at the Columbus Park Ramen Shop, which chef Josh Eans and his wife, Abbey-Jo, opened in early December.

The servers don’t even look askance when you polish off a bowl of steaming ramen noodles in less than 10 minutes and then ask for dessert. It’s the best kind of fast food.

I’m a huge fan of the kimchi ramen, probably the spiciest dish on the menu, prepared in a chicken-dashi broth with a “Chinesestyle” sausage — deftly seasoned with sweet Chinese herbs, such as anise, and made for

the Ramen Shop by the Broadway Butcher Shop. I like cabbage kimchi when it nearly sears the tongue, but Eans uses a bit of sugar in this broth that balances the house-made kimchi (both fiery-hot and vinegary-sour).

It’s a supple bowl with a lot of flavor notes earning your attention: sour, sweet and hot.

from the garden Paella república 4807 Jefferson I gave up eating mussels years ago, but I still love the idea of the Spanish rice dish named for the two-handed pan in which it’s prepared (traditionally with meat and seafood, with mussels as a primary component). The new República restaurant, on the Country Club Plaza, offers three variations daily on the paella theme, including chef Bradley Gilmore’s pan of saffron rice with seasonal vegetables in lieu of the shellfish or meat.

I’ve eaten this dish as both a shared starter — the overture to a more substantial entrée — and a soothing autumn meal (prepared with crisp snap peas, baby carrots, squash and heirloom tomatoes). Many diners love paella because of the crusty socarrat at the bottom of the pan. I’ll eat everything but the pan if I can.

RecordBar owners Steve Tulipana and Shawn Sherrill prepare to say goodbye to their music club … for now.

A

week before Christmas, RecordBar co-owners Steve Tulipana and Shawn Sherrill are struggling to find the balance between managing their busiest season and closing the doors forever on their club’s first address.

In July, the two announced that their lease at 1020 Westport Road, in the Old Westport Shopping Center, would expire December 31 and that their landlord, Cooper Weeks, had declined to renew it. Weeks has refused to comment on the reasons for his decision, but he said in a phone conversation that he hopes to put a retail outlet in the 3,200-square-foot venue.

It’s a decision that has been unpopular, not only with Tulipana and Sherrill but also with a large portion of the Kansas City music community. RecordBar has hosted concerts, weddings and parties since opening in 2005, and neither Tulipana nor Sherrill envisioned the end this way.

In the venue’s basement office, Tulipana reclines in a deteriorating leather office chair with highlighter-yellow stuffing poking out of an armrest. Sherrill, arms crossed, leans against the doorframe, a clipboard in one hand and a pen in the other. He’s in the middle of his liquor and supply ordering, which, at the moment, is a tricky game.

“Trying to figure out the plan for closing a bar when it’s at the apex of its busy season is like nothing I’ve ever been involved with before,” Sherrill says. “We’re trying not to order too much because we don’t have much time

left, but I want to be able to sell liquor to people because we’re packed this whole month.”

“Closing when you’re still active is kind of uncharted territory,” Tulipana says. “It would be another story if we were in dire circumstances, if we were just hanging on or something. Everybody would be angry at you.

But we’ve got nothing but love and concern right now, and it’s really weird.”

With just a month to move out, Tulipana and Sherrill haven’t done much in the way of packing. Everything upstairs is in order: Framed records are still affixed to the walls.

Liquor shelves are stocked. When I arrive, a sound guy is setting up the stage for the evening’s show.

The actual dismantling, Tulipana says, won’t happen until after the first of the year. RecordBar’s final show is January 2, and Weeks has given them until the end of that month to get through the housekeeping.

“Right now, we’re in denial,” Tulipana says with a short laugh. “No, we’re just throwing shit away, cleaning things up, trying to figure out what we want to keep and what we want to sell. We’ll probably have a sale and an auction a couple weeks into January, where stuff that we don’t want is on tables — records and equipment and neon signs. There’s all kinds of stuff that it doesn’t even make sense to pack up. We’ll sell drinks during the sale if any alcohol is left. It’ll help us pay some bills that way — we’ll still have a lot of bills to pay.”

When January is over, Tulipana and Sherrill agree, the most difficult work will begin: All

“We’ve been doing soul-searching and researching, trying to figure out, you know, what is the success rate of a place that has moved?”

Tulipana says. “If this is going to continue on, what are the things that we know we’d like to change? So we’ve got lists going for all kinds of different scenarios. And on top of it, we’ve already visited so many buildings and met so many different property owners, and people have been throwing different ideas at us.”

“All the while knowing that no matter how well developed your plan is,” Sherrill says, “it’s going to ultimately depend on the kind of space that we find.”

“We know we can’t replicate it — nor do we want to,” Tulipana adds. “It’s going to be different, but it still has to be warm and inviting, and that has a lot to do with the staff and the food and the aesthetic, and we want to protect that as much as we can. We know, no matter what, even if we went four doors down, we’re going to lose some people, so there’s a lot at risk to continue.” Tulipana pauses. “To not continue it is not off the table,” he says, his eyes on Sherrill, “but I think it’s starting to get shoved to the side more and more.”

The hunt for a new space is somewhat simplified, Sherrill says, by the long list of built-in requirements that RecordBar needs to exist.

kitchen and a bar, plus room for a stage, with ample parking and room for loading buses.

“It starts being easy to mark places off your list,” Sherrill says, “when you look at available places right now that have been a bar or a restaurant and what we really need.”

I ask Tulipana and Sherrill what inspires them to soldier on, given the enormous struggle ahead of them. In the end, they tell me, the list of pros is far more substantive than the cons.

“I thought about some of the stuff that [my wife] Cheryl said to me,” Tulipana says. “Like, is there a legacy? Is it just personal ego? Is it money? Is it the obligation to employees and people that love the place? And that’s one that gets checked off pretty quickly. I just feel like we’ve built this thing, and I feel obligated to see it through.”

“And we’re also proud of it,” Sherrill says.

“I don’t think we knew, 10 years ago, what it was going to grow into. But I think it means a lot to a lot of different people. People have had some really important moments here.

I’ve had important moments here. It’s nice to feel like you’re responsible for something that the city looks at favorably, especially in this industry, because that’s hard to accomplish.”

“At the same time,” Tulipana adds, “if we continue, we’ve got to find the things that make it grow and make it better.”

For that, Tulipana says, he’s counting on the contributions of the RecordBar staff. He doesn’t relish the idea of his workers’ joblessness, but in the interim, until plans for a new RecordBar are firmed up, he’s got at least one short-term solution for his bartenders.

ecordBar was the first music venue I came to when I visited Kansas City for the first time, and it was central in convincing me that live local music was a thing of beauty and pride here. I’ve had too many great nights here in my two years in this city to recount, but I’ll never forget Wednesday, September 3, 2014, when the Breeders — on tour with the original lineup from their seminal 1993 album, Last Splash — headlined.

Kim Deal brushed past me as I pressed myself as close to the stage as possible, and I got chills. She is, honest to God, the coolest woman on the planet, and I stood transfixed by her for the Breeders’ entire 80-minute set.

As the years carry me closer to old age, my dislike for crowds and my low tolerance for other people’s body odor steadily increase, but you know what? I’d wrestle in the mud with every single person in that sold-out audience if it meant hearing “Off You” live one more time.

— Natalie Gallagher It’s difficult to place a single dominant memory of RecordBar; rather, I’m struck by just how many bands that I’ve loved have chosen it as the venue to play a reunion show. It must be something to do with the fact that the place has been a music lover’s dream in terms of sight lines, sound and drink selections. I’ve seen so many bands play sets after years apart, and it always seemed so natural.

Be it a raucous, never-ending pit that left me soaked with sweat for Tanka Ray in February 2008 or a grinning sing-along with the Creature Comforts in June 2009, RecordBar has let me have many more “one more time” shows with my favorite bands.

That’s when, at this 2010 People’s Liberation Big Band of Greater Kansas City show, I got it.

I’d seen the lauded PLBB a few first Sundays of the month, but somehow, they were different this time. I wasn’t sure I appreciated the music they played, even as I realized that this was a helluva collection of KC jazz talent. But as Southerland, followed by a female cellist, marched past me, I understood that these

continued from page 21 RecordBar staff members will be the first to know when they’re out of the woods, Sherrill adds. “They know what’s going on,” he says. “They’ve known since the beginning. We talk to them every day, and they answer the same questions just as often as we do.”

“And they hear twice as many rumors as we do,” Tulipana adds with a wry laugh.

I ask Tulipana about a few of those rumors, and I share a few of the more interesting bits of gossip I’ve heard. Sherrill quickly defuses my buzz.

“Everything is false,” Sherrill says.

“There’s nothing to announce right now. And even if we did find something in the next couple weeks, I feel like this place needs a break. Even if we found a spot tomorrow, trying to shut down a bar and move out is not something I’m looking forward to doing.

Trying to open a bar at the same time — those are two completely separate things.”

Vacating, Tulipana says, is depressing enough. He gestures to the mostly empty wall above his desk; last week, he tells me, it was covered in old show posters and clever — if wildly inappropriate — doodles and art (much like the cartoon penises decorating the wall above Sherrill’s desk).

It’s an observation that sparks a fountain of reminiscing, and I ask Tulipana and Sherrill about some of their fondest memories from the last decade. There were the childhood heroes who made for momentous shows, such as Gary Numan in August 2006; the time that, Tulipana says, St. Vincent played to 13 people in 2007, when she was first starting; when the National played to a crowd of just 25 in 2005, and Tulipana and Sherrill took the band out drinking afterward. The partners have no trouble thinking of excellent shows they have hosted, but the best memories were the first ones.

“I go back to the early days,” Sherrill says.

“We got to do so many things that we never knew we could do. It’s just a bunch of weird intangibles. There was the Molloy’s staff [of the former Molloy Brothers Irish Pub] that we inherited, and I remember being here late, just drinking and trying to brainstorm ideas for pizzas.”

It’s a process, Tulipana and Sherrill agree, that they’re ready to begin again.

“As much as we’ve been doing this for 10 years, I always feel like we’re still learning and getting better at it and honing things,” Sherrill says. “You can’t please everyone, but we’re just trying to do what we like to do.

We’ve realized that this is important to us and a bunch of other people, and I think that’s why it’s worth another try. Next time will be the first time we’re going to walk into a room knowing what we want to do with it, and I think we can do it even better.”

This was bigband jazz so far outside the box, there was no container for it — no container, that is, except RecordBar. — Larry Kopitnik RecordBar reunions, like the return of Ricky Dean Sinatra and the bona fide resurrection of the Pedaljets, kept the region’s past triumphs alive.

The club always had room for genius experiments, like the annual Love Hangover “surprise duo” shows, curated by Scott Easterday. In 2009, Howard Iceberg and Amy Farrand dusted off old songs and added brand-new, previously unimaginable touches. Barclay Martin and Sara Swenson soared together, and operatic tenor Nathan Granner and jazz singer Valery Price paired up as a perfect example of how this place redefined a “scene.” Those shows and other ill-advised but brilliant ideas will all find homes, but it won’t be quite the same.

The People’s Liberation Big Band I’ll always remember being heckled by comedian Doug Stanhope at an excellent show almost 10 years ago for my recording part of his set with a horrible point-and-shoot camera. (This experience also taught me to never record comedy sets, for many more reasons beyond plain embarrassment.) It was also my first experience with stand-up comedy outside a comedy club, and it was refreshing.

RecordBar felt, especially because of Stanhope, like a great and authentic comedy venue.

My other favorite RecordBar show was Junior Boys’ 2009 performance. I had moved to Westport after several years of living in Lawrence, and being able to walk to such a comfortable, fun bar for an amazing dance party affirmed to me that I had absolutely made the right decision.

Thank you to Shawn and Steve, as well as all the wonderful bartenders, sound techs and staff at RB for always giving us a great place to hang out, eat and see live music. I’ll follow you wherever you go.
