In the Crossroads, a small move has fairly large consequences.

P

Vitagraft Kansas City marketing company has moved four blocks, and the city will become a little poorer as a result. Global Prairie has changed addresses in the Crossroads District. The company recently left its location at 1619 Walnut for the Vitagraph Film Exchange Building, at 17th Street and Wyandotte. Though its zip code remains the same, half of Global Prairie’s workforce will fall off the city’s tax rolls because of an agreement with philanthropist Shirley Helzberg, who restored the Vitagraph Building. Built in 1930, Vitagraph stored film reels that Warner Bros. distributed. Helzberg purchased the property in 2008 with the idea of creating a new office for the Kansas City Symphony. The Vitagraph Building is a short walk from the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, which opens in September. Taxpayers will reimburse Helzberg a portion of the $22 million she spent to restore the Vitagraph Building. Three years ago, the City Council approved her request for tax-increment financing (TIF). She’s eligible to receive up to $6.7 million in TIF funds. The city’s decision to assist Helzberg was somewhat controversial. Global Prairie’s relocation revives the debate. TIF is an economic-development tool that has been used to remake all corners of Kansas City. It’s a complicated device, in both design and administration. At its essence, TIF allows developers to capture the new taxes that their projects generate. Helzberg’s proposal was met with skepticism. Staff members in the city’s Finance Department questioned the original plan’s budget for a $2.3 million parking garage that would have created only 20 new spaces. In a memo, the staff also expressed frustration with the uncertainty of the project. The symphony, it was known, would use only a portion of the building. Who would use the rest, a company that relocated from Des Moines or from the Plaza? The Vitagraph Building would need to lure a new business — not merely relocate an existing one — in order to foster meaningful economic development. Representatives from Jackson County and the Kansas City, Missouri, School District had reservations as well. TIF deprives the county, the schools and other taxing jurisdictions of property taxes they would receive if the project went ahead without assistance. plained at a meeting of the TIF Commission that the public was being dragooned into one of Helzberg’s charitable efforts. “Let’s not confuse philanthropy with tax subsidies,” he said. In 2008, the TIF Commission, which makes recommendations to the City Council, was split on the decision to approve subsidies for the Vitagraph Building. After the 5-5 vote, the TIF plan arrived at City Hall. Dismissing the concerns, the City Council said yes to Helzberg, agreeing to supplement the $3.4 million in state and federal tax credits that the Vitagraph Building was scheduled to receive for its historic status. As a result of the council’s decision, next year’s city budget will appear as though a company that employed 15 people went out of business. TIF captures 50 percent of the earnings taxes that the city collects from workers. Global Prairie has 30 workers in Kansas City, according to a Kansas City Business Journal report. The city staff’s fears that the Vitagraph Building would merely rearrange jobs — not land new ones — appear to have been justified. Global Prairie’s move into the Vitagraph Building also leaves a landlord with a vacancy to fill. Brad Nicholson owns the building that Global Praire left. (Note: The Pitch leases office space from Nicholson.) Nicholson says he isn’t bitter, though. TIF or no TIF, he was bound to lose Global Prairie as a tenant. “We just didn’t have anything in our portfolio that fit them,” he says. — DAVID MARTIN On the rolls at pitch.com/plog

hat if the American Restaurant — one of the more expensive and glamorous dining rooms in Kansas City — decided to return to 1976 prices? A 16-ounce Kansas City strip would cost $13.50, a Long Island duckling in whitegrape sauce would go for $9, and a glass of the house wine would be priced at 95 cents. At those prices, people could actually afford to eat out a lot more frequently. Alas, at today’s prices, even a glass of iced tea costs more than a dollar. Everything is more expensive in 2011. After eliminating the options of fast-food chains, all-you-can-eat buffets and prepackaged salads and sandwiches at convenience stores, finding bargain meals out is no simple task. Take away other cost-cutting options (coupons, happy hours, early bird specials, senior discounts), and getting a cheap breakfast, lunch or dinner becomes even more challenging. Not that price should outweigh food quality, service and overall experience when choosing a restaurant. But when it’s the middle of the month, and it costs $50 to fill your gas tank, and the car payment and the cable bill are due the same day, eating in a restaurant seems like an outrageous luxury. (Don’t even think about tax and tip.) So we went looking for a week’s worth of meals on a daily budget of $20. Across the metro, we found a reassuring number of places where inflation hasn’t quite caught up. There’s nothing fancy about any of these diners, mom-and-pop joints and blue-plate throwbacks, but treasures await anyone looking for a vivid atmosphere and a screenplay’s worth of overheard conversation — not to mention a full plate on a nearly empty wallet.

Harold’s Drive-In

1337 Admiral Boulevard 816-221-2359

Before there was anything known as a drivethrough, there was the drive-in — and Harold’s, an East Side institution since 1958. Teenagers motoring home from seeing The Blob or Attack of the 50-Foot Woman at one of the downtown movie palaces would stop, park their cars, and go in for a chocolate malted and a cheeseburger. Owner Nancy Smith still sells malts and burgers, but her customers are usually bluecollar workers from around the neighborhood. Smith serves breakfast until 10:30 a.m. A fivespot buys a handcrafted grilled sandwich (fried egg and cheese with ham or bacon or sausage, lettuce, tomato and mayo), hash browns and a beverage. No tipping is required, but you have to eat in your car. Englewood Café

10904 East Winner Road, Independence 816-461-9588

The daily specials at this small-town diner vary, but they’re nearly always solid, homestyle dishes such as baked meatloaf or baked chicken, served with three sides and a dinner roll. Most of the lunch specials cost less than $7, and there’s always plenty left to take home. A slab of pie costs extra, but it’s baked right there.

Happiness can be defined in just two words: inexpensive sushi. Every Monday (from 5 to 9 p.m.) and Saturday (from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.), this 39th Street staple offers $1 pieces of sushi and $3.99 rolls. Spicy salmon is the way to go — it’s the finest offering in the joint.

Nelle Belle’s Diner

150 East U.S. Highway 69 816-452-9786

Owner Dixie Edwards works from 3 a.m. to 2 p.m. at this pink diner frequented by workers at the nearby Ford plant. There’s a mean plate of biscuits with sausage gravy ($4.75), and the daily made cobbler ($2) makes pie a serious breakfast option. The specials hang on brightly colored posterboard on the walls, and the two narrow dining rooms mean that all conversations here are communal. Hayes Hamburgers & Chili 2502 Northeast Vivion Road 816-453-5575 This shiny, tiny 24-hour diner — the booths seat two people, unless you know your dining companions really, really well — dates back to 1955 pitch.com

and remains famous for its modestly priced breakfasts and lunches. A signature platter includes a 4-ounce rib-eye steak with two eggs, hash browns, and toast ($7.35) or a hefty order of biscuits slathered with sausage gravy ($3.60). A triple burger ($3.99) can be layered with cheese ($4.50) or chili ($4.95), and the small pork-tenderloin sandwich is grilled, not fried. You can make a satisfying meal out of a single pancake ($1.15) and an order of hash browns with cheese ($2.05) and still have enough left for a root-beer float ($1.65). Ernie’s Steakhouse & Kross Lounge 605 North Sterling Avenue, Sugar Creek 816-254-9494 This small-town saloon dates back to the 1940s, and the dinner portions hearken back to a time when no one gave a damn about such things as cholesterol and high blood pressure. There are dinner specials every night of the week, but the best might be Tuesday night’s fried pork tenderloin dinner (with a choice of spud) for $5.

Little Richard’s Family Restaurant 301 North Highway 291, Independence 816-257-7295 You can’t be too squeamish about mounted deer heads when you dine at Richard Cash’s familystyle diner. He has mounted a dozen of them on M O N T H X X–X X , 2 0 0 X

the mint-green walls of his restaurant — they’re about the same size as his cinnamon rolls. He offers the biggest pork-tenderloin sandwich in the city, too, and he’ll pay you $50 if you can finish it. The breakfasts aren’t just hearty but also tasty and cheap: A two-egg cheese omelet with fried potatoes and toast costs $3.99 (a biscuit is 19 cents extra, or if you’re feeling fancy, spend 29 cents for an English muffin). If you spring for the $7.99 breakfast — a pork chop, two eggs, hash browns and toast — you won’t be hungry again until dinner. Philo’s Grill 4127 East Truman Road 816-241-9995 George Ingelzos has something for everyone at his five-year-old Greek-American diner on Truman Road, including outstanding gyro sandwiches ($5.25), a delicious Angus steakburger ($3.50) and a fried-chicken plate with two pieces of dark meat, mashed potatoes and buttered corn ($3.50). The daily $2.75 breakfast special is served until 11 a.m. (or even later, for a buck extra) and features two eggs, two strips of bacon, hash browns, toast and jelly. Construction workers in the area prefer the “hot plate specials” for $7.25 — chicken-fried steak, rotisserie chicken, fried chicken, ham steak — because they include choice of potato, vegetables, bread, and coffee or tea. Chapala Restaurante Mexicano 5224 East Truman Road 816-241-9957 Owner Martha Senda now closes her familyoperated cantina early — dinner service ends at 4 p.m. so she can spend more time with her family — but she still offers some of the most delicious, least costly authentic Mexican meals in the metro. She’s famous for her soups, which are frequently featured on the specials board, as are her handmade enchiladas — four big ones with lettuce and sour cream for about $8. Quick’s 7th Street Bar-B-Q 709 Cheyenne, Kansas City, Kansas 913-371-1599 Don’t judge this tasty book by its plain cover. The exterior of the 54-year-old joint looks a little forlorn, but the dining room is as neat as a

pin, and the smoked meats are great. The best bargain is the $5.50 rib-tip platter, featuring a mess of tender, meaty rib meat slathered in a brawny, cayenne-seasoned sauce. The dish is served with two slices of soft white bread and a choice of baked beans, cole slaw, potato salad or fries. It’s not available every day, so call ahead.

and a choice of dinner roll or cornbread. The side-dish choices include delicious vinegary greens, mashed potatoes and gravy, salad, green beans, and a few other soul-food favorites. Even after paying tip and tax, you’ll walk out feeling fuller and richer.

Winstead’s 101 Brush Creek Boulevard 816-753-2244 Winstead’s may be known for its steakburgers, but the smart money is on the breakfast sandwiches at this Kansas City classic. A fried-egg sandwich on toast or a grilled English muffin is just $1.85. Add a breakfast meat or cheese for 40 cents, and you’re out the door in under five minutes for less than $3. Whether hungover or tired, never underestimate the restorative powers of an egg-and-cheese from Winstead’s.

Ruby’s Dagwood Café 1117 Southwest Boulevard 913-677-0747 Perfectly runny eggs are hiding inside a mound of hash browns, bacon or sausage (although you can have both if you ask nicely) and cheese, all smashed inside two slices of Texas toast. This is the Dagwood ($4.65), the signature breakfast sandwich of this L-shaped diner. Your heart is already a goner, so order a saladplate-sized cinnamon roll ($3), served warm with butter-cream frosting and melted butter.

Kitty’s Café 810 East 31st Street 816-753-9711 Pork-tenderloin sandwiches don’t have to be stomach anvils. Proof: the delicate, tempuralike, pancake-thin triple stack ($4.90) from Kitty’s Café. Ask for the hot sauce, which neatly complements the crunch of the pork tenderloin and the sweetness of the pickle slices. Call ahead — the tiny kitchen has just six stools, just as it has since 1951. Niecie’s Restaurant 6441 Troost 816-444-6006 It’s an offer that sounds too good to be true: a three-piece fried-chicken dinner for $4.99, including two side dishes. But both of Denise Hayes’ restaurants — the newer Troost location and the East 63rd Street spot — offer three pieces of crispy, delicious fried dark meat (a white-meat dinner costs $2 extra) with sides

Lutfi’s Fried Fish 3360 Troost 816-921-0152 If you’ve driven up and down Troost lately, you’ve seen eager young men energetically waving yellow placards advertising the $5 fish special at this newest Lutfi’s location. The special is offered each day and fills you up good, baby. How much fish? Three pieces of fried catfish or three pieces of fried perch or two pieces of fried whiting. What else? Bread and a choice of one side dish (stewed greens, macaroni and cheese, red beans and rice, fries, potato salad, or cole slaw). Those sign wavers might just be satisfied customers saying thanks. Kin Lin Chinese Restaurant 314 East 51st Street 816-561-4334 Budget-conscious students at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and Rockhurst University swear by this cozy little Chinese restaurant, which is short on style but long on portions. The

Above, from left: a sign from Philo’s Grill, the tenderloin sandwich at Little Richard’s, a gyro and hummus at Philo’s inexpensive Chinese dishes here come in two sizes: big and bigger. Big — well, “regular” — is often enough for two meals, and “large” could be three. The regular dinners cost $6–$7.50, and the large meals top out at $10. Besides traditional Chinese-American dishes, there are spicy meatless dishes and fried rice and noodle creations. You can also make a satisfying dinner out of a bowl of wonton soup ($2.50) and the combination appetizer platter ($5.95). Bluestem 900 Westport Road 816-561-1101 Lounge-only happy hour: 5-7 p.m. Tuesday-Friday Whoever said you need nothing more than friends to be wealthy must have been friends with Bluestem chefs Colby and Megan Garrelts. One of the best happy hours in the city is in the restaurant’s well-appointed lounge, where the half-price menu items include mussels ($7), wagyu beef tartare ($6) and truffle pommes frites ($2.50). After a week of budgeting, it’s a rich indulgence at a deeply fair price.

John’s Space Age Donuts 8124 Floyd, Overland Park 913-381-0980 It’s a heartwarming sight to see grown men holding school-lunchroom milk cartons and smiling at the first mouthful of apple fritter. They may have sat here as boys, on the same stools on either side of the pastry case. John’s opened in 1967, and today’s doughnuts aren’t much more expensive than the Apollo-era treats: 70 cents (75 cents to-go). continued on page 8

Werner’s Fine Sausages 5736 Johnson Drive, Mission 913-362-5955 On calendars in Mission, Saturday reads Sausageday. That’s when the line forms to pick up one of seven sausage varieties ($2.50 each) from a grill cart just outside Werner’s Specialty Foods. The cart opens at 11 a.m. and runs until 2:30 p.m., but to make sure your favorite sausage is still on hand, get there by 1. Start with the smoked Polish, a mixture of beef and pork with the satisfying snap of natural casing. Mugs-Up Root Beer Drive-In 700 East 23rd Street, Independence 816-254-7040 There are so few places to find home-brewed root beer served in those heavy, thick frosty mugs that even if this iconic drive-in were expensive — which it isn’t — it would still be worth a drive to Independence. Mugs-Up’s root beer can be ordered by the glass or the quart, and the simple menu is a throwback to a time when little loose-meat burgers were the rage — the Zip Burger ($2.15) is plain, while the Whiz

Burger ($2.45) is a Zip with cheese. There are other treats here, including corn dogs, barbecue sandwiches and fried tenderloins. And the rib-sticking chili-cheese Frito pie is a bargain at $2.55. HiBoy Drive-In 924 West U.S. Highway 24, Independence 816-252-4050 The cars in the drive-through are no longer classics, but not much else has changed since HiBoy opened in 1957 — especially the tasty food. The HiBoy Burger ($3.89) is still a thin patty with a slight pepper kick, juicy enough to make the bun slightly soft. It comes stacked with crunchy lettuce, sliced tomato, a dollop of house sauce, and melty cheese that sticks first to the foil wrapping and then to your lips.

El Camino Real 903 North Seventh Street, Kansas City, Kansas 913-342-4333 People don’t just love this taqueria in downtown Kansas City, Kansas, because the tacos are so inexpensive ($1.50 each). They’re also delicious, and the selection is terrific: beef tongue, spicy chorizo, fried fish, carne asada, pollo, poblano chiles with cheese. You can eat like a king for less than $8.

Fresher Than Fresh Snow Cones ftfsnowcones.com Magic happens inside a Shasta teardrop trailer every Sunday, May-September, in the corner garden at 17th Street and Summit. The snow cones ($3) are complex, with fascinating flavor combinations — such as lemon prickly pear or pineapple with serrano pepper — that stem from the imagination of founder Lindsay Laricks. This grocery and restaurant serves beef cheek, tongue, tripe, pork shoulder, and lamb ( just five of the 10 filling choices) on two corn tortillas under a generous handful of fresh cilantro and chopped onion. The flat, oblong popsicles have the texture of a Creamsicle, the taste of a juice pop from childhood, and a price that anybody’s allowance can cover ($1.59–$1.79). The challenge: picking just one, which is impossible as long as the flavors include mango with chili powder and piña colada.

Curbside Cuisine @curbsidecuisine A righteous, Chicago-style hot dog was hard to find in Kansas City until Curbside Cuisine hit the streets in March. This rolling pleasure palace serves genuine, steamed Vienna-beef hot dogs ($3.50) with all the trimmings — sliced tomato, onion, neon relish, sport pepper, mustard, kosher pickle wedge, a dash of celery salt — packed into a poppy-seed bun. Port Fonda portfondakc.com Chef Patrick Ryan’s retrofitted Airstream trailer has a single six-person table inside, which he has nicknamed “el comedor.” But you don’t have to sit there to enjoy his cracking-good regional Mexican dishes. The tacos ($3) include goat with radish and green onion. And the tortas ($7) are inventive sandwiches — like Ryan’s take on a banh mi, with rancho gordo beans, chicken-liver pate, pork belly, pork rillette, pickled vegetables, cilantro and hot-sauce mayo.

ow, when we tell you what today’s participatory sports event is called, we want you to try and remain calm. Don’t overreact. Although it’s extremely scary-sounding, it’s just a name. OK, starting at 9 a.m., the Plaza Tennis Center (4747 J.C. Nichols Parkway, 816-784-5100) is host to the Spring/ Summer 2011 Bracket of Death. Now, “Bracket of Death” just refers to the tournament that’s coordinated by some area tennis players as, basically, an endurance challenge, because it’s compressed into one day. And the champion — who has to survive something like 90 games of tennis — receives what we are going to warn you in advance is a scary-sounding trophy. It’s name? The Belt of Death. OK, you seem really jumpy. But it’s just a regular trophy-style belt and doesn’t have rotating blades or any of that Saw II crap. In 2007, the Food and Drug Administration suggested capping SPF (sun protection factor) levels at 50 and above. Given that these are determined by comparing the time it takes to burn without sunscreen with the time it takes to burn with it, it’s probably OK to assume that sunscreen between SPF 50 and SPF 100 is pretty much a marketing ploy. But we still advise slathering up this summer, especially while visiting the Jackson County beaches, which are now open through September 5. Abstractions WHERE THERE’S A WILL, THERE’S A FIERY WAY.

ncendies, the new French-Canadian/ Lebanese film by director Denis Villeneuve (Maelstrom, Polytechnique), is the sort of work that can give a critic fits. There is more than enough “right” with it to make it worthy of recommendation, even though it has certain significant problems as well. But it’s also different enough and accomplished enough that it merits much more than a mere shrug or even a few BY words of tepid approbation. MICHAEL The title is French for “fires,” and the film (adapted S I C I N S K I from the play by Wajdi Mouawad) is indeed about the slow-burn aftermath of a life lived as scorched earth and the toll taken on loved ones. The movie is framed by the reading of the last will and testament of legal secretary Nawal Marwan (Lubna Azabal) before her surviving children, twins Simon (Maxim Gaudette) and Jeanne (Mélissa Désormeaux-Poulin). A distant, depressive woman, Nawal had a very secret life that she scrupulously concealed from her children upon the family’s emigration to Canada, and the will is a body blow to the already reeling siblings. They must return to their mother’s homeland (a never-named Middle Eastern country, but clearly Lebanon) and locate both the father they believed to be dead and the brother they never knew existed. From this point on, the Marwan children’s present-day journey is quite gracefully intercut with flashbacks depicting the complicated, bitter life of Nawal. But it’s here that Incendies runs aground, despite its best intentions. Not specifying the national locale of Nawal’s war and casting Nawal and her family as Christians in the midst of Muslim persecution (and vice versa) have the deeply frustrating effect of taking these subjects, described through Nawal’s plight, out of their historical context. This polarity is never reconciled. At the center of Villeneuve’s film is a passionate, brave and, at times, even crazy individual. But the attempt to make her plight universal simply feels fraudulent. Given the specifics of Christian-Muslim antagonisms in Lebanon — a history given more overall context in the recent animated documentary Waltz With Bashir — Incendies risks playing into the vague fatalism that too often pervades Western perceptions of the Middle East. (“It will always be a mess over there …”) Villeneuve and ace cinematographer André Turpin provide exceptional formal construction, making it easy to see why Incendies was one of last year’s Best Foreign Language Oscar nominees. In particular, the visual contrast

between the golden expanses of natural light in Lebanon and the gray, geometrical brutalism of Montreal offers a solid objective correlative for two ways of life. But this perspective also points to one of the complications that makes Incendies a film of ideas, but not wholly successful ones. The acting is uniformly excellent, and Désormeaux-Poulin does a fine job as a professor of abstract mathematics who’s struggling to solve her familial dilemma like a proof. But the film’s overall point of view is filtered through Jeanne and Simon, which becomes a problem when a film about political strife in the Arab world assumes and conforms to middle-class Western expectations. Nothing exemplifies this more than Incendies’ final-reel twist, an affectation that says very little about the price exacted for dignity in wartime and much more about Hollywood moviemaking expectations, and the pampered classes’ inability to imagine real cruelty. ■

OUT THIS WEEK Submarine In British comedian Richard Ayoade’s directorial debut, Craig Roberts plays a smart, sensitive teenage kid who’s trying to save his parents’ failing marriage while winning the heart of an aloof classmate (Yasmin Paige). Submarine is funny and stylish, and shot in a way that gives the early 1980s an archaic glow, as though lit by candles and the setting sun. It ranges too far at times into Wes Anderson-y indie quirk, but like Anderson, Ayoade is able to convey the painful awkwardness beneath the stylization. This is a movie about immature emotions that uses its own poses to keep genuine feelings at bay. — NOEL MURRAY

But as of last week, he hadn’t yet lined up a new job or decided whether to open his own restaurant. “I have no firm plans yet,” he says. “But I’m talking with potential investors.” The Pitch: What was the West Bottoms like when you started here two years ago? Pope: I look out the window, and it doesn’t look like much has changed, although we have two great new neighbors. People who are coming down here have a destination in mind. It FIND would be great to get MUCH MORE some residential development because it’s so close to downtown. CONTENT I’d love to see the West ONLINE AT Bottoms turn into the PITCH.COM new Crossroads. I think that’s possible. It’s not scary. It’s just empty. It’s going to take a serious amount of investment, and I’d love for that to happen. What are your culinary inspirations? It comes from a couple of places. Sometimes ideas pop out fully formed, like the pastrami short ribs. That was like a Reuben sandwich, but not exactly. I look at the seasons and write down ingredients — ramps, peas and proteins I want to use. Then I try and match them up and get a few random ideas going. I’ll have about 10 to 15 pages of random thoughts. It’s free-form when I start. And then I just try to create a good mix for the menu. Left to my druthers, I’d have a menu of entirely braised meats and sausages. But there’s lots of varied customers in any given night, so I try and make something for everyone. What’s your favorite ingredient? Salt. I don’t know if that’s an ingredient.

Alex Pope is moving on.

Everything sucks without salt. I have a salty palate, so I try and tone it back. Salt balance is everything. I even put a little bit in my desserts. What’s your guilty pleasure? I really like cabeza burritos from Pancho’s. It’s all beef cheek and beef head. … You can see they’re really cooking when you’re at the drivethrough. There’s freshly made salsa, and I just love the gelatinous quality of the meat. It’s succulent and braised. So, burritos and any kind of ice cream. What’s never in your kitchen? I always buy vegetables, and I’m going to cook them, but then I get home and just make a fried egg. What’s always in your kitchen? Olive oil. Fish sauce. Lots of mayo. I have an unhealthy relationship with mayo. I used to eat mayo sandwiches in high school. I’d go to Jimmy John’s and get some day-old bread and four packets of mayo. That’s a sandwich for 50 cents. Mayo is the epitome of sauce. It’s got fat, acidity. It’s emulsified and salty and balanced. Most of our sauces here are mayo-based. I’ve only got a six-burner — I can’t be making reductions. What kind of beer have you and your brotherin-law been making? We’ve been going through different styles: wheat, Irish, pale and IPA. I love beer. The first was wheat and it was [briefly pauses] drinkable. We haven’t made a bad one yet. The best may have been a coffee stout with cardamom. I’ve started approaching it like cooking. How so? The water is like the stock in sauce. … It always takes longer than you think because you always start drinking beer. Try different styles to get the foundations down and then experiment. Because you can throw in anything you want in there. It’s very much like cooking. You follow a recipe and boil stuff. It’s really simple to learn. Where do you shop for equipment or ingredients? Locally, we’ll go to Bacchus & Barleycorn [in Shawnee] or just pick out a bunch of stuff online at Midwest Supplies. What’s next? Maybe a pomegranate oatmeal or wheat. We keep brewing IPAs, and our wives don’t want to drink those. Pomegranate molasses is really cheap, and then we can give it some body. — JONATHAN BENDER Alphabet soup to beer nuts at pitch.com/fatcity

The Matter With Kansas JORDAN GEIGER RETURNS TO LAWRENCE TO REBOOT HOSPITAL SHIPS.

A

few weeks back, hipster journal Vice published a review of Lonely Twin, the second LP from Lawrence act Hospital Ships. The magazine named it “Worst Album of the Month.” Taking issue with the review is a fool’s errand. Dumping on things is Vice’s modus operandi, and Hospital Ships has earned love from plenty of other outlets — including National Public Radio and Stereogum (not to mention The Pitch) — that take music criticism seriously. What is notable about the review is how the author (anonymous) cites his (or her) inability, as an East Coast resident, to connect with a record that is so “Midwestern.” The implied condescension behind that statement is a little bit despicable, but it does hint at a certain truth: The East BY Coast and the Midwest just don’t seem to understand each BRAD other. As it happens, Jordan KROHE Geiger, the man behind Hospital Ships, recently returned to Lawrence after living in New York City. And he has some thoughts on the subject. “Here, I make music. I ride my bike with my friends. I have a garden. It feels like the way life should be lived to me,” Geiger says. He’s seated inside Coffee Break in Lawrence along with his backing band, a little jet-lagged, having just gotten back from a mini tour in France promoting Lonely Twin. “In New York, I was doing art stuff about ‘my

soul,’ and it smelled like shit everywhere, and it’s Jordan Geiger: just a small-town boy. like this giant unsustainable ball of assholes. It’s a place where people go to ‘make it,’ but I think if Stahl, Taylor Holenbeck, Mitch Jones, Lucas you’re moving somewhere to ‘make it,’ you need Oswald, and Katlyn Conroy — from the bands to seriously question your artistic motivations.” Cowboy Indian Bear, the Appleseed Cast, ColIn defiance of the conventional logic of ony Collapse and Elevator Action) to perform heading coastward for success, Geiger — who with him. “I think one thing unique about Lawrence, also plays in Minus Story and Shearwater, both not-unsuccessful bands — elected to that you don’t find in a lot of other places, is that it’s nurturing,” Conroy return to his home base says. Her role is sort of a of Lawrence to establish a floating member of the band sturdier, more permanent Hospital Ships, with Asobi Seksu and Capybara. when she’s not involved with lineup for Hospital Ships. Tuesday, June 7, Cowboy Indian Bear. “You can “There were very particuat the Riot Room. start a band and try to build lar people I wanted to work something without feeling with here,” he says. “It wasn’t overwhelmed. I don’t think like, Hey, I heard you play the guitar pretty well; let’s play together. I didn’t put I’d be in bands if I didn’t move to Lawrence.” Conroy continues, “It’s definitely less stressout a Craigslist ad.” Geiger gathered together several friends and former bandmates (Nick ful to play music here than a lot of places, be-

cause any sort of competition is fun competition. Like, I grew up listening to Jordan and seeing his shows. And now I play alongside him. That shit wouldn’t happen in a lot of other places.” That Hospital Ships is now a functioning live act at all is something of a development. In 2008, when Geiger released Oh, Ramona, the Hospital Ships’ debut, he considered it a hobby project. “It was very personal and vulnerable,” he says. “It’s kind of embarrassing to listen to now because of that.” But the record’s moody pop sensibility quickly found an audience, and in his downtime between work in Minus Story and Shearwater, Geiger began shaping and recording the new material that would become Lonely Twin. Two years later, the new record has arrived. The tracks on Lonely Twin are pop songs with a noisy streak running through them. They’re explosive and swelling but rooted in a melodic steadiness, like a controlled demolition. On some songs, Geiger gets a little orchestral, with strings, synths and glockenspiels. It’s without a doubt an album informed by its process, which for Geiger involved migration and settlement — a sense of place. But whether the music reflects a typical Midwestern musical mind-set is up to the listener to decide. Or to not care about at all. “My feeling is that lots of people need to be told what something is, and whether it’s good or not,” Geiger says. “But here in Lawrence, it seems more natural than that. Here, it seems like people don’t need someone to say that Lawrence is cool. That’s why that Vice thing, that shitty Vice review, is cool to me. It’s awesome that Lawrence doesn’t give a fuck if Brooklyn thinks that Lawrence is stupid, because we know Lawrence is cool. And that is punk-rock to me. That’s why I got into music.” E-mail feedback@pitch.com

bonus tracks Saved DAVID BAZAN AND HIS SPIRIT MAKE STRANGE NEGOTIATIONS.

T

he eve of the predicted rapture a couple of weeks back seemed like an appropriate time to speak with David Bazan. As songwriter for Pedro the Lion, Bazan was something of a revolutionary indie-rock character for singing about his Christian faith. As the years passed, doubt crept BY into his religious worldview, most notably on 2009’s Curse JOSH Your Branches, on which he esHAFNER sentially renounced his faith. Strange Negotiations, his latest, examines the subtleties of modern existence through a more agnostic lens. The Pitch: You’re going on tour with some great bands such as Cotton Jones and Bright Eyes. But the world is supposed to end tomorrow, so how’s that all going to work out for you? Bazan: Well, I guess it depends on your interpretation. If that rapture happens, it will only be saved people who will go before tribulation. And a lot of saved folks are into my records, so I think show attendance will be affected negatively. My family wonders if I am saved, but a lot of my friends would argue that I’m mostly saved. So who knows if I’ll even be here? Do you ever tire of the ubiquitous associations in the press between your art and religious doubt? Well, it has been a central theme. If I could choose again, I maybe wouldn’t have chosen it. The [reaction] to Curse Your Branches was so elevated compared to the expectations I had. But I’m fascinated by the topic and I started the conversation in that direction, so I’m happy to go back and forth about that stuff. “Level With Yourself,” from the new album, muses on a line from “Be Thou My Vision,” a hymn you recorded more than a decade ago. Is that a nod to your younger self? That line always rocked me when I was a kid: Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise/Thou my inheritance now and always. It’s a delayed gratification thing, sort of a statement to being committed to a different value system. That always really resonated with me, and strangely it still does, except for the Thou my inheritance now and always part. To me, the line is about how there’s other things to be motivated by than money and glory. Do you feel a philosophical or chronological distance when you play Pedro the Lion songs today? It’s different for every single song. We’re playing “Of Up and Coming Monarchs” on this tour, which is a song I wrote 14 years ago. I love it. It’s fresh to me, and we’re having a great time playing it. But then I’ll play a song off Winners Never Quit or Control that feels really dated somehow. I saw you had a back-and-forth online with 22

someone who tweeted: “You ever feel bad ’bout all the money you bank from Christians? Maybe give it to Haiti or deaf kids, in case there is a Hell.” This is a complaint I hear sometimes, that I’ve taken advantage of Christian fans by kind of stringing them along for years. I thought, “OK, I feel like I’ve said some things that are very much the opposite of stringing people along, so I’m dealing with this once and for all.” But then I read this blog he wrote about it and I was like, “I’m not talking to this dum-dum.” A guy who’s that clued out, I’m not going to spend time trying to interact with him because it won’t go anywhere. He’s not trying to get it. I got kids, and stuff to do. That’s another question on the new record: How do you even engage with people like that? I don’t think you do. They’re not trying to understand how the world works. They’re choosing not to. E-mail feedback@pitch.com

CD REVIEW DOLLAR FOX Close to Home (Money Wolf)

My claim of objectivity regarding Dollar Fox’s debut, Close to Home, is about as convincing as a drunk friend pleading for his car keys back. I have a built-in weakness for the band’s down-home Americana. Still, I think listeners who are less biased than I am will recognize that these are betterthan-average roots-rock tunes, making for a fitting soundtrack to an early-afternoon Marlboro and porch beer. Singer Tommy Donoho’s voice lacks the dusky weariness (or the tuneful strength) of Jason Isbell or the Band’s Levon Helm, but the hazy sway of those artists’ sounds is there. It’s a record rife with mesquite smoke, truck exhaust and dusty leather, with the plucky embroidery of earnest bluegrass roots. I’ve got some time to kill, and I’m gonna kill it with you, Donoho sings on the album’s first track. It feels like a mantra. — ELKE MERMIS

You will never be as cool as Sleigh Bells.

J O E E LY Influenced by fellow Lubbock native Buddy Holly, Joe Ely brought a rock-and-roll sensibility to the Texas country trio the Flatlanders, which formed in the early ’70s. And bandmates Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock educated Ely in the sounds of country and folk. By the time Ely also began releasing solo albums, he had developed his own sound by merging the three genres. His sizzling performances had him on the verge of stardom — he spent a summer opening for the Clash — but today he’s mostly a figure of critical adulation, notable for his broad mix of styles and his well-sketched, windblown characters. He has released several fine albums over the years, and his latest, Satisfied at Last, out on Tuesday, is one of them. — CHRIS PARKER Joe Ely Band. Thursday, June 2, at Knuckleheads Saloon.

Y E A S AY E R The pale, white tentacles of the music blogosphere extend far and wide, and they can anoint or destroy when wielded in relative unison. Yeasayer found itself on the winning side of this divide. Last year, Hype Machine named the psych-pop group the “Most Blogged-About Artist” of the year. This is owed, in part, to style. The band comes from Brooklyn, and its live show is a spectacle of lights, flashing images and progressive haircuts — but there’s substance, too. Last year’s Odd Blood built upon the tribal grittiness of its debut to create something brighter and more accessible, without sacrificing any of the band’s experimental virtues. Joining Yeasayer is another act enjoying Internet acclaim: Smith Westerns, a rowdy group of underaged Chicago kids who, in the space of about a year, have traded in their nuts-and-bolts garage rock for a surprisingly assured ’70s sound reminiscent of vintage Bowie, T. Rex and George Harrison. — JENNY K RATZ

SLEIGH BELLS AND NEON INDIAN Straight outta Hollywood: A starving musician is working in a restaurant, hoping to one day find his vocal muse, when in walks a shy but talented songstress lunching with her mother. The musician chats them up, and eventually, the girl’s mother volunteers her daughter to sing with the charming young man. They form a band and live happy, quirky lives in Brooklyn. So goes the story of noisepop duo Sleigh Bells. Drawing on a background in the post-hardcore scene, guitarist Derek Miller crafts reverb-heavy, fuzzed-out dance beats that waver beneath Alexis Krauss’ dreamy vocals. The result is a blasting, occasionally catchy sound that has captured the attention of some influential critics as well as M.I.A., who released the band’s debut, Treats, on her N.E.E.T. label. Also on the bill is Neon Indian, a bedroom-pop outfit whose blurry take on electronic music fits snugly into the micro-genre that folks call “chillwave.” — JENNY KRATZ Sleigh Bells and Neon Indian, with Sumsun. Monday, June 6, at the Midland.

RATATAT Seven years ago, Ratatat’s home-recorded debut single, “Seventeen Years,” hit college-radio airwaves amid a trend of instrumental electronic music built on pulsating bass and heavy synthesizers. These days, the Brooklyn duo is best-known for its remixes, with the signature tailoring of whining synth lines and drop-out dance beats. Something about the video-game sound has attracted artists in other genres — Ratatat has worked with such heavyweights as Björk, Daft Punk, the Killers, and Vampire Weekend. A collaboration with Kid Cudi on his hit “Pursuit of Happiness” introduced Ratatat to a new fanbase, making the strong argument that the duo is not just an electronic indie act but also a legitimate hip-hop production team. — JENNY K RATZ Ratatat, with Despot and Erock. savage love Marriage Tales Dear Dan: My husband and I recently realized that in order for us to remain happily married, we need to fuck other people. Enter the boyfriend. This 20-year-old hunk has opened the sexual floodgates. He’s gorgeous, athletic and enthusiastic. He gets me off at least twice every time, and tales of our exploits have made things hotter between my husband and me. Everybody’s happy! But after two months of dating and numerous sexual encounters, my new lover has yet to get an erection. I know he was able to get it up with previous partners. Maybe there’s a subconscious part of his brain BY that doesn’t want to bone a DAN married woman? I’ve made it clear to him that there’s no S AVA G E pressure and I’m more than satisfied. He insists that he’s very attracted to me and that our activities (lots of oral and hands everywhere) are incredibly satisfying. Am I missing something? How can I coax this young man’s erection out of hiding? Nouveau Mrs. Robinson Dear NMR: Before I get to your question, I need to address the recent Arnold Schwarzenegger unpleasantness. I’m getting a lot of mail from people insisting that it’s all my fault — the affair, the love child, the split with Maria Shriver — because (1) I’m a big proponent of non-monogamous/ monogamish relationships, and (2) aging Hollywood action stars don’t get erections without checking in with me first. In my defense, I would point out that Arnold wasn’t in a non-monogamous relationship. Arnold was in a monogamous relationship. Arnold failed at monogamy. If there is a lesson to be drawn from the Schwarzenegger unpleasantness, it’s not that honest non-monogamy never works. Bear in mind that you rarely hear about honest non-monogamous relationships that work, to say nothing of marriages like Mr. and Mrs. NMR’s: marriages saved by non-monogamy. We tend to learn that someone is in a nonmonogamous relationship only when it implodes and people look around for something or someone to blame. If the couple is non-monogamous, non-monogamy gets the blame, even if it has nothing to do with the breakup. On to your problem, NMR. I can’t say what’s wrong with your hunk’s dick — it could be the infamous limpothalamus (that would be the part of the brain that doesn’t want to bone a married woman). But you’re doing everything right. It’s only a matter of time before your hunk is getting it up for you. But was he getting it up for previous partners? Young hunks with erectile problems, too embarrassed and/or ashamed, will sometimes lie to their partners and refuse to speak to doc30

tors. But your hunk has someone older and wiser telling him what to do, and you’re going to tell him to talk with a doctor. Dear Dan: Is it better to stay with your overweight wife—who happens to be the mother of your infant daughter—and cheat on her to get sexual gratification (and be a shit of a husband) or leave her (and be a shit of a father)? Almost Twice the Wife Dear ATTW: Are those your only options? If they are, then stay and cheat. Abandoning an infant — to say nothing of abandoning someone with an infant — is a shit move. So is cheating on the mother of your infant daughter, of course, but it’s slightly less shitty. Here’s another option: You could go without for six months or a year — you know, like most new parents. But backing way up: You were attracted to your wife before the baby, right? (Otherwise, there would be no baby?) And, presumably, the mother of your infant daughter is going without now, too. Because she just had a baby. She also may not be feeling it for her asshole husband, who she senses doesn’t find her attractive in her current state — a state he helped put her in. You knocked up the wife knowing that new moms have little time for the gym. If you expect her to bounce back to her pre-baby weight in 10 weeks, like some sort of celebrity mom, then you need to get her two nannies, a personal trainer and a full-time nutritionist. Perhaps I’m being too hard on you. For all I know, your wife is one of those lousy takeyou-for-granted spouses who abandons routine physical maintenance once the first kid arrives. But it’s too soon to know because your daughter is still an infant. Masturbate, help out, make sure your wife has the free time she needs to take care of herself, and you may find that you don’t have to be any sort of shit. Dear Dan: I’m writing about the “Choicer Challenge” you issued to all the bigots out there who say that being gay is a choice. I think you set yourself up for a possible failure here. I’m a straight guy. I’m also a stubborn motherfucker. If I were one of those choicers, I would suck your dick just to win the argument. That’s why the challenge should say they have to suck you off while maintaining a glass-cutting boner. I could probably will myself to blow you to prove a point, but willing myself to get hard during it? Not possible! Bone Machine Dear BM: The Choicer Challenge is hereby amended to include the production of a glasscutting boner while blowing me. I’m waiting for your call, John “Choicer” Cummins.
