EDITOR’S LETTER

What A Ride!

I

was appointed Editor of my high school newspaper by my English Teacher, Mr. Gary Owens, to whom I owe a great deal of gratitude. It was the first time it occurred to me that I may be able to turn my love of writing into a career. Even with that newfound wisdom I never dreamed I would have the opportunity to tell the story of so many generous, gracious and good people as I have in the city of Louisville through Nfocus. You folks have certainly been showing out over the past seven years in the best possible way and it has been an honor to document. In the last Editor’s Letter of my senior year of high school, I quoted Jerry Seinfeld. It was the mid-90’s, after all, and he was my modern Shakespeare. He said, “Life is truly a ride. We’re all

ZEGNA I SA I A CANALI SA M U E L S O H N

strapped in and no one can stop it. When the doctor slaps your behind, he’s ripping your ticket and away you go. As you make each passage from youth to adulthood to maturity, sometimes you put your arms up and scream, sometimes you just hang to that bar in front of you. But the ride is the thing. I think the most you can hope for at the end is that your hair is messed, you’re out of breath, and you didn’t throw up.” I’ve come close to throwing up a few times with this one, but what a ride it has been! As we exit to our left at Nfocus I thank you, the readers and advertisers for this humbling opportunity. Please read the feature, A Fond Farewell, on page 20 of this last issue as an extension to my Editor’s Letter full of acknowledgments and gratitude for those who lifted their hands and rode along with me.

Night of a Thousand Laughs Laughter Gives Life at Gilda’s Club Ashley Wimsetz, Andrew Noland

Tomas Aguilera, Susan Moremen

T

here are a handful of times I have shamefully caught the giggles sitting in the audience of the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts. At Gilda’s Night of a Thousand Laughs, I thanked my lucky stars laughing was actually appropriate. From the time Keith McGill and Mack Dryden took the stage on May 21, friends of Gilda’s Club roared in unison as jabs and puns illuminated the faces of everyone present. Gilda’s Night of a Thousand Laughs is by far the most sought after amature comedy night in the Ville with every performance given by local personalities. Before the show began, guests relished heavy hors d’oeuvres and an open bar before taking their seats in the Bomhard Theatre anticipating a night full of laughter. This year Andy Blieden, Cynthia Fletcher, Orn Gudmundsson, Jr., Sadiqa Reynolds and Chris Robert made a show that was truly as incredible as the organization that benefited. Gilda’s Club believes strongly that laughter is the best medicine for those afflicted with cancer. In 2007 several community leaders opened Gilda’s Club with hopes that a community would soon form behind its bright red doors. Now, Gilda’s Club acts as a safe haven for not only cancer victims, but for their families and friends as well. Their message is very clear: cancer doesn’t discriminate — and neither do they. Gilda Radner once said, “Having cancer gave me membership in an elite club I would rather not belong to.” Sharing the experience of life with cancer is what Gilda’s Club is all about. Think potlucks, parties, book clubs, game nights, karaoke, member talent nights, concerts, comedy nights, lock-ins, day camps, street dances, ice-cream socials, holiday dinners and even group exercise classes. Gilda’s Club works to send the message that although you don’t choose to get cancer, you choose how to live your life with it. Gilda’s Club wishes to provide individuals a place to learn, share, and most important of all—laugh!

X-Men Apocalypse Charity Screening The Jennifer Lawrence Foundation Climbs Meghan’s Mountain

W

hile the star of X-Men: Apocalypse was Louisville’s own Jennifer Lawrence, the spotlight of the night was on the friends and family of Sarah Meghan Steinberg who keep her legacy alive through the Meghan’s Mountain Charitable Foundation. The Jennifer Lawrence Foundation, a component of the Community Foundation of Louisville, hosted a night of cocktails and hors d’oeuvres while guest perused a silent auction of autographs, designer accessories, local shopping options and much more. The Jennifer Lawrence Foundation boasts a mission of assisting and empowering charitable organizations that fulfill children’s vital needs and drive arts awareness and participation. The foundation leverages independent philanthropy initiatives, community events and popular culture memorabilia donations and auctions to positively impact the lives of young people, artists and the organizations that serve them. The advanced movie screening of the popular franchise was created to raise funds for Meghan’s Mountain and also to spread the word about the foundation. Though an exciting evening of cinema magic, the event was heartfelt as loved ones of Meghan, a courageous woman who was diagnosed with Leukemia at age 22, explained that when it comes to cancer, no child or adult should ever have to climb their mountain alone. Not Today. Not Tomorrow. Not Ever. Meghan defined the mission as of Meghan’s Mountain as one that would provide “direct patient care” and all funds raised by the foundation must directly benefit the cancer patient and his or her family members. The night came to a close with a screening of X-Men: Apocalypse where, shoulder-to-shoulder, sat those who believed in supporting the combined efforts of the Jennifer Lawrence Foundation and the Community Foundation of Louisville, helping to further Meghan’s legacy of generating awareness and resources for cancer sufferers and survivors and ensuring no one climbs their mountain alone.

Homes of Distinction Nfocus Celebrates Luxury Living Lisa Dahlem, Cheryl Parish, Holly Meadows

E

very June, Nfocus scours the local real estate market to bring the finest in Louisville luxury living to our annual Homes of Distinction issue. This year’s issue brought the zenith of of luxury lifestyle and design featuring homes like the historic “The Avish,” originally developed by Owsley and Laura Lyons Brown in 1910 currently listed by Lenihan Sotheby’s International Realty, the fabulously restored ranch at 213 Blankenbaker listed by Kentucky Select Properties and the new 10 Indian Hills listed by Bershire Hathaway Home Services Parks & Weisberg Realtors. This year, we also offered a unique twist by featuring the custom home built by Artisan Signature Homes and owned by Jason and Gretchen Black. The southern yet modern estate located in Norton Commons was the site of our Homes of Distinction launch party which honored those in the real estate and design industry. The party Presented by Norton Commons Realty and Artisan Signature Homes and held at the idyllic Black residence was a stunning success from the moment guests arrived overlooking the Norton Commons amphitheater greeted by Ready Valet, to the after party hosted by Citizen 7. Supporting sponsors First Community Mortgage, Premier Flooring, Home Owners Resource Guide also contributed to the festive environment where guests were able to peruse the impeccably appointed three-story home complete with a pop up shop from Lulubelles! In celebration of the cover story featuring Natalie Officer and Britney Groneck, guests were treated to a delicious spread courtesy of Volare, Citizen 7, Scarlet’s Bakery and Butchertown Grocery. Spirits remained high through the evening hours thanks to the generosity of Citizen 7 who provided a Margarita Bar, Commonwealth Tap and their exclusive wine supply, Falls City Beer, Tito’s Vodka, bourbon from Heaven Hill, and champagne from Korbel. Nanz & Kraft added their signature touch of elegance to the event with floral decor throughout. Thank you to additional participating sponsors, Limestone Title and Escrow, LLC, Reflections of You, Perfect Petal, Winnelson and Century Entertainment and Furnishings. The generosity of the night’s attendees allowed Nfocus to make a small donation to and raise awareness for the Bill Meadows Foundation.

Zoofari One Wild Night

T

here’s really no need to plan a safari vacation when the Louisville Zoo opens its gates for a genuine hands-on night with their furry (and scaley!) friends. On June 4th, fans of the Louisville Zoo dressed in black-tie and animal prints of all variety and got the chance to engage with some of the cutest and most intimidating stars of the zoo. Tiki torches guided guests through the zoo, ultimately leading them to leashed kangaroos that awaited attendees’ coos of affection. This year Zoofari! One Wild Night had an African theme to celebrate the recently completed expansion of the zoo’s elephant habitat and the birth of their new baby gorilla, Kindi. Guests relished Nigerian inspired finger foods while enjoying time spent doting on the animals to the tunes of Zim Marim and This, That, and the Other. Zoofari! is the Louisville Zoo’s biggest fundraiser of the year and has raised over $40,000 to support the School at the Zoo program. The program is a partnership with JCPS that enables kids from primarily low income or at-risk schools to participate in a week-long education program at the zoo. The work of School at the Zoo aligns perfectly with their mission to “better the bond between people and the planet” but they do this a plethora of ways. From award-winning exhibits to science and conservation education programs, the Louisville Zoo is wild about connecting people, animals and the earth. After guests said their hellos to all of the animals--including a 15 foot burmese python, attendees had a delicious dinner and impressive auction emceed by Jesse and MJ from 106.9 PLAY. Guests got the opportunity to “adopt” animals throughout dinner while hearing about the leaps and strides of the zoo we all adore. BrownForman, Papa John’s, White Clay Consulting, and LG&E/KU sponsored this event that keeps growing more wild each and every year.

Bourbon & Bowties: A Taste of Corbett’s Sip and Taste for Kosair Children’s Hospital

I

t’s not often an event is catered by 42 incredible local chefs--for that reason Bourbon and Bowties is the hottest ticketed event of the whole summer. Every year tickets sell out quickly, but those lucky enough to snag them enjoy what can only be described as a glamorous Southern summer block party. Hundreds donned Derby-styled getups and mingled carelessly as the smell of delectable food and freshly poured bourbon inspired the evening. Guests socialized under tents while the sun set over Corbett’s: An American Place. Warm smiles and hugs were contagious as everyone celebrated summer and the incredible feats of Kosair Children’s Hospital. This year’s festivities honored 17-year-old Tanner Demling. Demling was born with a rare congenital heart defect and has benefitted from Kosair since he was an infant. Kosair worked with him to manage the condition but one day, in the Fall of 2014, Demling went into sudden cardiac arrest while playing lacrosse. Lifesaving CPR was performed by his coach and a bystander who happened to be a nurse from Kosair Children’s Medical Center – Brownsboro. Since then, Kosair has helped bring Demling back to good health. Bracelets and ties in honor of Demling were on sale during the event and they coordinated ideally with anything bearing the labels of Lilly or Vineyard Vines. Funds raised at Bourbon and Bowties help Kosair provide funding for lifesaving technology and specialized care for kids of all ages with a range of illnesses and injuries through the efforts of the Kosair Children’s Hospital Foundation. With more than 170,000 children from throughout Kentucky and Southern Indiana who are cared for each year at the hospital, Kosair will continue to succeed in their mission to provide children with groundbreaking medical care. Bourbon and Bowties has raised well over $500,000 for Kosair and the funds grow each year. The Derby city anxiously looks forward to next year’s block party with a purpose and will be obsessively hitting refresh on their computers to try to score a ticket!

rapping up this final issue of Nfocus surprisingly feels more sweet than bitter. Although the decision to suspend publication following our July issue came swiftly and a bit unexpectedly, as news of this variety often does, I can’t help but focus on how much we have to be proud of in what we’ve accomplished over the past seven years. I attended University of Louisville for my undergraduate studies and then the professional career of my husband took us to Chicago for a spell and, later, Los Angeles. During that time, I pined for Louisville, Kentucky. Though I had grown up in the small town of Monticello, Louisville felt like home and I had come to love the city deeply for reasons I couldn’t yet fully articulate. But that didn’t stop me from trying. I would preach the gospel of the Derby City to anyone willing to listen and I’m certain those around me got tired of hearing it. I loved my time in those other cities, but I felt very much like misplaced Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz – I just wanted to get back home. continued on page 26

I never dreamed I would have the opportunity to pull back the curtain on Louisville the way I have during my time with Nfocus. It has been a fascinating and enlightening journey – and one I certainly didn’t walk alone. Our cover story is inspired by the realization that I have been supported by some incredible characters. I never would have found my way without them. Alexa Pence started as an intern with Nfocus in April 2012 when she was only a high school student at duPont Manual. She was eager and capable even at such a young age and has consistently taken on more responsibility through the years. She is undeniably the heart of this publication, always pitching new ideas to keep the magazine fresh and youthful, taking on even the most mundane tasks with a smile and positive attitude. Gunnar Deatherage and I became fast friends over fashion. I have been a fangirl of his eccentric designs and personality since the moment I stepped foot back on the soil of Louisville. He exhibits unquestionable courage with each issue, pushing the boundaries of creativity and challenging me to think bigger. His ideas can be a scary beast sometimes, but they are always thoughtful and meaningful on a level through which he patiently guides me. Megan Vogt has been our Operations Director over the past year and I can think of no one better to keep us organized than a mother of three children under the age of three. She is brilliant, thorough and exhibits an unparalleled enthusiasm for life. She has somehow defied all universally recognized rules of space and time to be a fully engaged mother, reliable and accountable team member within Nfocus and a tireless volunteer for a number of local nonprofits. Sarah Mitchell had a well-established reputation in this city as a fearless and ethical business leader. When she was tapped as the Publisher of Nfocus, she floated onto the scene with a wand of proven management solutions. She is bold, determined and focused and has an almost magic ability to develop and maintain meaningful relationships. She does it all wearing pretty dresses and a smile. She also just so happens to be a personal hero of mine for reasons far beyond the success she brought to this publication in a short time. It has been an honor to work alongside her on this project. I am going to break all of the HR rules and say that I love these people. Oftentimes we felt a bit like the wizard himself – the stunning product that you see on the stands each month masked the fact that we were a small operation, running this publication from our homes and on a shoestring budget. People saw the evening gowns and the black-tie galas that hid the chaos behind the curtain – children begging for attention while we tried to send one more email, the guilt that built as we shuffled them to sitters while we attended the worthy events that we sponsored. The accurate opening photo spread is a tribute to juggling, working moms everywhere. There are others that aren’t pictured on the cover that contributed immensely to our success over seven years. Derek Potter is based in our Nashville corporate office and as the Art Director was responsible for taking our raw ideas and interpreting our vision in imaginative ways. Even though my communication with him took place primarily over chat, he saved my life (and sanity) every month. Special thanks to the talented cast of freelancers who worked for us for way less than they could have commanded otherwise. Thank you to the pioneers of Nfocus for nurturing this publication and giving me an opportunity to become a part of it - Pam Brooks, Barry Wooley and Laura Snyder. My respect for each of you and desire to make you proud was a motivator in the hardest times. Josh Miller, my partner for so long, you were the face and the soul of this magazine for many years as I’m sure even the most casual reader would agree. What this team has realized is that we always held the power to get where we wanted to be by using our own talents – and we will. If you are an astute viewer of The Wizard of Oz you recall that, even though they said goodbye in Oz, they never truly parted ways. I know that will be accurate for these people I have encountered along the way that I am now proud to call friends. For now, in parting, I’ll just repeat what I know to be true…

E

ven before restaurateur Kevin Grangier opened the widely celebrated upscale steakhouse Le Moo, he had designs to marry the restaurant to a connecting space to create a blues bar called Blue Moo. Well, you may kiss the bride because Blue Moo is full of sultry song and ready to entertain you. Inspired by the Rainbow Room that formerly sat atop Rockefeller Center in New York City, Grangier envisioned a smaller version that would combine music, dining and cocktails. Grangier was careful to design a space that would amplify a singer’s voice while muting some of the accompaniment in order to allow for easy conversation among diners. Open on Friday and Saturdays, you have the mouth-watering option of the Le Moo menu until 10:30 p.m. when the specialty cocktail menu along with the vocal stylings of Karen Chavis will ease you into the morning hours. Thank you, Louisville! Circa 2010-2016

T

hrough the past seven years, Nfocus has featured some of the most inspiring and accomplished local and national philanthropists on our cover. We always took the selection very seriously and believe that each outstanding individual was deserving of the recognition. We also acknowledge that to accept our request was to sometimes put themselves in a vulnerable situation though oftentimes they were solely motivated by the promotion of their personal nonprofit platform. However, the city of Louisville has been the star of this publication consistently for 73 issues. It could have easily been any of you on this cover and we regret that there are so many compelling stories that remain to be told. Thank you, Louisville for being the great city of compassion. While we may no longer be here to document those noble efforts, we are confident that the result of your work will continue to close the gap for those in need, strengthen our local visual and performing arts scene and mentor and motivate the next generation, solidifying Louisville as one of the great American cities for many years to come. Thank you to those who allowed us to tell your stories and to the clients who supported us in presenting such a quality publication for seven years. We may be closing the book, but your story continues on.
