142 Crowning Moment of the Kentucky Derby nd

®

The crowning finish includes a unique design of roses commemorating the 142nd Kentucky Derby. The number of roses in the crown corresponds to the number of Thoroughbreds competing in this year’s race.

The Garland is completely handcrafted, requiring about 80 hours of preparatory work ahead and an additional 10 to 12 hours for four designers on Derby Eve.

The roses are sewn into position on top of thornless sprengeri, used to cushion the flowers. A border of boxwood camelia and ruskus leaves finishes the design.

Perfect round holes are punched in the cloth — to encase more than 450 sources of water. (There’s a water source for each rose.)

A moisture barrier and soft batting cushion are sewn into the Garland to protect the moiré bengaline backing.

Beautiful deep green moiré bengaline adorns the back of the Garland, assuring a soft, comfortable surface.

The Great Seal of the Commonwealth of Kentucky is embroidered on one end, and the Churchill Downs® Event Mark is embroidered on the other.

The Winner’s Circle in the infield of Churchill Downs® is used only one day a year, the first Saturday in May. This day they crown the winner of the Kentucky Derby®, the Run for the Roses. Churchill Downs entrusts the making of the world famous Rose Garland to the Kroger floral design team in Louisville. When the Garland is bestowed upon the newest member of Thoroughbred royalty, it’s a crowning moment for Kroger, too.

Southern Hospitality with a Kick Like a good Southern family recipe that has been passed down from generation to generation, there are some things so treasured that they cannot be attributed a monetary value. Three and a half years ago when the stylish Amy Quinlan decided to take a shop she had been running from her home and grow it into a storefront presence, she knew that a keen business acumen and charming hospitality were ingredients needed for her success. Luckily, she also knew two partners who could contribute both – her parents Mary Jo and Clois Weller. Together through the perfect pairing of this parent-daughter co-ownership, they have created The Prickly Pear, a locally owned boutique that is quintessentially Southern, stylish and full of surprises. But above all, the warm and welcoming atmosphere makes all who enter feel like they are immediately part of the family. Tucked away in historic Middletown, the delightful boutique was named after a Prickly Pear Margarita, the first drink Amy imbibed when she was living in Phoenix, Arizona; and like the drink, the boutique is just the right amount of sweet with an unexpected kick to it. Coincidentally, it was only after opening that the family discovered that a prickly pear is also the name of the only cactus native to Kentucky. Undeniably, The Prickly Pear is the only one of its kind, and with Derby season looming, it is the perfect time to stop in to stock up on hats, accessories, hostess gifts and home décor for your Derby parties. Intent on separating themselves from other boutiques by keeping prices affordable, Amy recalls that her father, Clois, employed the same method with his company Bayside LTD (formerly World Bazaar) when she was growing up. “Dad always taught us through our family’s past retail experience that it is more ethical to price things lower,” Amy shares of the years she and her sister worked for their father. A place where you can always find more than you are looking for, their price structure is what assures that shoppers keep coming back to find things they love, but also gives them the opportunity to pick up gifts for others while they are there. The not-so-secret ingredient to the success of The Prickly Pear is the overwhelming sense of hospitality as soon as you enter. It’s the same warm welcome that Amy used to extend to the 150 – 200 people that would come through her home to shop when she was running her business Dress It Up. “It’s always a little sad to me when a shopper comments about what a great experience they have had at our shop,” Amy shares, “because we really believe that should be the norm. You will always be greeted by my mom, my dad or myself and made to know that we are here to help you.” Keeping the merchandise vibrant and unique is a priority and one in which the family invests a great deal of their efforts. Through his past business experience, the patriarch of the business, Clois, has established strong relationships with many of the vendors since 1978. “We try to buy unusual but practical gifts,” he shares of their strategy to stock gifts that appeal to all shoppers and every possible occasion. Running a small family-owned business can be challenging for certain, but the family is always sure to focus on the fun they are having and the impact they are able to have on their community. Mary Jo says, “It’s a true blessing to get to work together.” Together they were able to contribute significantly to the Twisted Pink Masquerade Ball and even host routine shopping events where a percentage of the proceeds are donated to organizations like Big Brothers, Big Sisters and more. Never more will the culture of this distinctive boutique shine brighter like the sun on My Old Kentucky Home than Derby season. It is a must-stop shop whether you are heading to the track or hosting others in your home. The opportunities to stock up are plentiful while indulging in a most delightful decadent treat appealing to male and female shoppers alike. Partnering with Ballotin Whiskey, The Prickly Pear will offer Chocolate Mint Juleps and a bourbon tasting on April 16 from 1-4 and will pair Bourbon Balls with a bourbon tasting on April 21 with extended shopping hours from 6-8. Here’s a buyer’s tip - stop in early to take advantage of their monogramming and embroidery services for Derby gifts and accessories. It will only take seven to ten days to personalize. With the Prickly Pear in town, there is no reason why we all can’t be the perfectly polite, perfectly accessorized party guest!

EDITOR’S LETTER

The Sport of Fashion

“W

ith all due respect to the horses, the Kentucky Derby is also the sport of fashion.” Those true words were said by our cover subject, Julia Carstanjan – a woman I have admired from afar for many years and of whom I now have a sincere fondness after the opportunity to interview her for this month’s Derby Fashion Preview Issue. Not only is Julia one of the most dedicated community philanthropists this time of year, but she always manages to look the perfect part whether it’s at the track or at one of her many fundraisers leading up to the big race. We aim to inspire you this Derby season by offering two breathtaking fashion spreads featuring items from one of Louisville’s iconic fashion staples as well as one of the newest, hippest boutiques in the city: Rodes For Him For Her and Liv Boutique. If nothing else, I hope the looks in this

issue inspire you to shop local this month at one of our many fine retail establishments or boutiques. It just makes sense - nowhere else in the country is better prepared to outfit you for Derby season than right here in the Derby City itself. An avid art lover, Julia is also quick to defend fashion as art as evidenced by her passion project to bring Derby ensembles through the decades to display in The Mansion at Churchill Downs along with other regional Kentucky artwork. Fashion and Art are sure to collide on Opening Night during the Awards in the Arts. This exciting inaugural venture is a winning trifecta partnership between Churchill Downs, Fund for the Arts and the Jennifer Lawrence Foundation and is sure to solidify itself as one of the can’t-miss events of Derby Season. I can’t wait to update our Nfocus readers on every detail of the evening. But first….what to wear?

Louisville Heart Ball The Heart of Rock ‘n Roll

W

ith winged hearts afire and electric guitars adorning the Louisville Marriott Downtown, the only thing that could have made the Heart Ball feel more rock ‘n roll would have been a round of shots for everyone there. Oh wait! Scratch that! They had that too! This year’s theme was a refreshing departure for the American Heart Association’s signature event, traditionally held close to Valentine’s Day. Though guests felt more like they were at a cool concert than a stuffy gala, the important cause was still at the “heart” of the evening. Heart Ball Chairs, Nick and Sheila Walker, shared what their efforts were all about: “Sadly, all of our lives have, in some way, been impacted by heart disease or stroke. Tonight we go on the offensive. Together we demonstrate our willingness to take the needed steps to reduce the devastating effects of heart disease and stroke for ourselves and for future generations. In the end, this is what “having a heart” is all about.” If this evening were to be likened to a concert, the part where the crowd would raise their lighters in unison (ok, cell phones in this day and age) would be the moving moment when the Demling Family shared their story – what some have called the “miracle on the field.” Jody and Angela Demling bravely shared the harrowing tale of how their 16-year-old son, Tanner Demling, collapsed on the field while running sprints at a True Lacrosse Club team practice. Tanner was born with a heart defect but with yearly checkups, had been cleared to play sports. Coach Ryan Smith rushed to his side recalling, “There was no pulse, no breathing. He was unresponsive.” Smith immediately went to work giving CPR compressions and was soon joined by a field hockey mom and nurse, Brittany Kurtz. The Demling family credit those two “angels” for saving Tanner’s life. The American Heart Association is behind the push to ensure every student learns basic CPR skills before they graduate so that lives like Tanner’s can continue to be saved. Luckily, we are one step closer to that goal thanks to the success of the 2016 Heart Ball. Director Courtney Burge shared, “Thanks to support form our donors, we raised $612,000 to fund research, education and advocacy programs.” That deserves a standing ovation!

R

onald McDonald House Charities of Kentuckiana knows hospitality well and their annual red tie gala made each guest feel right at home from the time they entered the ballroom of the Galt House Hotel. The mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kentuckiana is to provide a “home away from home” for families of children receiving healthcare at area medical facilities while also lending support to other organizations who aid children. A cause that helps children and families in need already pulls at the hearts in our community. An event that is chock full of decadence while raising money for that cause? Well there is a reason McDazzle limits its ticket sales to 200. The night started off with cocktails and mingling over an impressive silent auction. Items included “Your dream vacation on Florida’s Gulf Shore” and “SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament Package” among so many others. After time spent connecting with other compassionate hearts, the sea of red dresses and red ties took their seats for a delicious meal. The real treat that night was listening to the story of the Moreno family and how Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kentuckiana showed them support when they needed it most. Living in Elkhorn City, Kentucky, 235 miles away from Louisville, proved to be an issue when the couple realized their son, Leland, had a genetic disorder that had a one in three chance of developing into leukemia. Their situation worsened when they discovered their other son, Waylon, had a type of dwarfism mostly identified in children who cannot talk, walk or eat on their own. The Moreno family has stayed 93 nights at the Ronald McDonald House and will continue needing the support from the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kentuckiana for years to come. Although the Moreno family’s story brought tears to the eyes of guests, they celebrated in the knowledge that Ronald McDonald House has the ability to offer those services to families, asking nothing in return. After a live auction guests danced the night away, celebrating the work of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kentuckiana.

Shakespeare in Love Gala An Evening of Rhyme & Roses

J

ust like Shakespeare himself, Kentucky Shakespeare has stood the test of time as the oldest free Shakespeare festival in the country and largest touring arts-education program provider in the Commonwealth. Guests of Kentucky Shakespeare’s annual gala, Shakespeare in Love gathered for performances, cocktails, desserts by Proof, and dancing for the great cause of continuing the work of Kentucky Shakespeare. Producing Artistic Director, Matt Wallace said, “It was a chance for us to celebrate what we have accomplished and to shake hands with some new folks as well as loyal supporters. Everything we raise here goes to keeping Shakespeare in the Park free.” June 1, Shakespeare in the Park will begin its 56th season of free performances of Shakespeare. The mission of Kentucky Shakespeare is to enrich our community by presenting accessible, professional theatre experiences that educate, inspire and entertain people of all ages. Over 80,000 people have been impacted by Kentucky Shakespeare, spread across 58 counties on educational tours. A way you can support Kentucky Shakespeare is by joining the Stratford Society. Long-time Kentucky Shakespeare board member, Gordon Strauss, founded the Stratford Society in 2007, naming it after Stratford-Upon-Avon – a market town and civil parish in South Warwickshire, England, where William Shakespeare was born. Membership in the Stratford Society is $1564 – the year Shakespeare was born. The Society enables Kentucky Shakespeare to offer performances and educational programs for free. Wallace also noted, “You would be hard pressed to find another art program like this for free.” This season Shakespeare in the Park will be even greater, expanding a week and producing seven shows. Along with expanding the amount of shows, Kentucky Shakespeare is collaborating with the Louisville Ballet the final week for a production called, “Shakespeare in Dance”. Guests of Shakespeare in Love got a very special treat (aside from a decadent candy bar). They were able to preview three scenes for the upcoming season as well as a special guest performance of CenterStage’s West Side Story. With thunderous applause and hearts lifted, Louisville celebrated Kentucky Shakespeare’s 56th season.

ost Louisvillians watch the Oscars from the comfort of their couch, elbows deep in popcorn, donning their coziest PJs. The Louisville Film Society takes their Oscar night a little bit more seriously. Inspired by a Hollywood Oscar night experience, they dress to the nines and cheer on the many successful Kentuckians who work in the film industry. This year, guests of the Louisville Film Society’s 3rd Annual Oscar Watch Party gathered at Copper & Kings Brandy Distillery for a night of drinks, food and fandom. Attendees arrived looking like stars with a red carpet photographed entrance and greetings from Masters of Ceremony Kirby Adams and Christine Fellingham. Upon entering, guests would soon realize how perfect the location for a night of such glamour. While some took their seats and zoned into the ceremony viewed on multiple big-screen TVs, others shook hands and sipped Hollywood inspired libations. Throughout the night guests could bid on silent auction items that would tantalize the movie lover. Amongst those items donated were Jennifer Lawrence’s signed posters for Joy, Hunger Games Mockingjay – Part 2, and a poster from Daddy’s Home including signatures from Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg. In addition to her posters, Jennifer Lawrence lent the Louisville Film Society her Best Actress Oscar statuette from Silver Linings Playbook. As you can imagine, it got its fair share of photographs. If the night were not entertaining enough, guests participated in Oscar ballot competitions, raffles for each of the nominated categories, and both Hollywood and Oscar trivia during commercial breaks. According to Louisville Film Society Executive Director Soozie Eastman, the silent auction contributes significant revenue for the Louisville Film Society. This is a society vital to the creative community of Louisville as it sets out to provide resources and education to current and future filmmakers as well as enriching the Greater Louisville community through exposure to engaging and innovative films and cinematic programming. Sponsors of the night included Yum! Brands, Copper & Kings Brandy Distillery, Republic National Distributing Company, Louisville Film Commission, 180 Degrees, Axxis, The Event Company, Bar Ties, Schulz Florists, Ballotin Chocolate Whiskey, Francis Coppola Wines, Hendricks Gin, Jefferson Reserve Bourbon and Tito’s Vodka. “Y

ou’re here and you’re fabulous!” That was the reassuring mantra that kept ringing throughout The Henry Clay as the best dressed women from head to peep toe enjoyed fine wine and bourbon tastings, shopped in the Marketplace, relaxed with foot massages by Elements and purchased a chance to win the ARGI Financial Key-to-the Closet raffle. The always fashionable and delightful, WLKY’s Vicki Dortch served as Mistress of Ceremonies and welcomed the crowd with a little remote help from her friends Pat Sajak and Vanna White of Wheel of Fortune fame. Then the real stars of the night took the stage – even Co-Chairs Jennifer Powell and Christian Dreisbach who thanked their hard working committee and sponsors including Diamond-Studded Stiletto Presenting Sponsor Delta Dental of Kentucky. Then came the anticipated fashion show featuring designs sold at Von Maur and modeled by talent from Heyman Talent. If that Derby preview is any indication (and I can bet it is, as many looks were met with “ooohs,” “ahhhs,” and an encouraging, “That is SO you,” among friends) expect to see pastels at the track with garments where the back feature is the main event and gala dresses with long, full skirts. Things took a turn for the competitive as Ted Loebenberg led the live auction that offered items such as a Russian River Wine Country Getaway, A VIP trip to Sonoma Valley and stunning diamond and sapphire earrings from Merkley Kendrick Jewelers. While those items kept the bid cards rising, it was the work of “The Shoe Guys,” volunteers who kept wine glasses full all evening, that can be credited for keeping the guests bidding. Of course, their motives weren’t entirely pure – the Shoe Guy with the most tips at the end of the night would be crowned King of Sole. All the while, yours truly was tasked with the unenviable job of selecting “Best in Shoe,” a distinction that ultimately went to the well-heeled Brittany Lutke for her lime green and python print stilettos. Finally, the moment everyone had awaited – the ARGI Financial Key-to-the-Closet Raffle Drawing by Erin Haynes Reed – a chance for $10,000 shopping spree to Von Maur, topped a fashionable evening in support of Family Scholar House.

Julia Carstanjen is in high demand in Louisville’s philanthropy circles and never more so than this time of year, when her ties to Churchill Downs and commitment to charitable causes make her the perfect ambassador for a variety of organizations. This year, she lends her name, her pledge and her unyielding love for fine art to two inaugural events that are sure to solidify a permanent place on the list of can’t-miss Derby season soirees. The Oaks Brunch at Speed Art Museum and the Awards in the Arts, a partnership with Churchill Downs, Fund for the Arts and the Jennifer Lawrence Foundation may be new to the event scene this year, but they are already generating substantial buzz. Thanks to Julia, they are both sure to be an instant success. continued on page 24

alking the grounds of Churchill Downs with Julia Carstanjen is an absolute treat. Julia, the wife of Bill Carstanjen, CEO of Churchill Downs Incorporated (whom she affectionately refers to as William), is enthusiastic about all the renovations the track is currently undergoing and when she talks about the hundreds of thousands of people that will walk through those gates on Oaks and Derby weekend, she absolutely radiates with pride. Furthermore, it’s fascinating to watch her interact with nearly every person along our walk, most of the many track workers she can address by name, all of whom she engages in genuine conversation. It’s all very personal to her and she works extremely hard to make sure the weeks leading up to the big race are a worthy celebration while raising money for an array of deserving causes. We spend most of our day together at The Mansion, the luxurious and stately private space that debuted for the 2013 running of the Kentucky Derby. Julia notes, “We are sitting in the most glamorous sporting event venues in the world. You can’t go to an NFL game and find a space like this.” Some of the elegance of that space can be attributed to Julia herself. When The Mansion started to take shape, she learned of a couture clothing collection started by Jo Ross in 1977 held at what is now the Kentucky Science Center. With over 22,000 items dating back to the 1800s, including Victorian gowns and art deco dresses from the 20s, they were able to curate a rotating sample of the history of Derby apparel. Julia made sure that they could get museum-quality and climate controlled glass to exhibit one-of-a-kind wearable art alongside other great Kentucky regional artists. A project like the one in The Mansion is a perfect example of how Julia uses her sphere of influence in connection with her natural gifts and love of fine art to contribute to the city of Louisville, and one in which she is perfectly equipped. Having been accepted to the Art Institute of Chicago for a studio art degree, she instead chose to attend New York University to focus on the business aspect of art, eventually earning an MA in Art Management. At NYU, she immediately started living an art lover’s dream interning in various art galleries and at the MET and Guggenheim museums. With a thesis behind her that focused on how to increase the accessibility of art to the general public, she focused on just that professionally, working for a corporate art consulting firm that advised clients like Goldman Sachs on how to incorporate art in a way that benefited both their employees and clients. She and Bill made the New York area their home for 15 years following his graduation from Columbia Law School, and moved to Connecticut after having three children in four and a half years. It was there that she decided to focus on philanthropy by joining the Greenwich Junior League and fittingly found her place as Art Director at Seven Bridges Art Foundation, a 50 acre facility with a sculpture garden and private art collection. There she educated the public on art while planning art discussion fundraisers benefiting third party charities. Ten years ago, she and William moved their family to Louisville when he took a job with Churchill Downs as General Counsel and Chief

Development Officer, excited by the idea that the company could continue to enhance its crown jewel, Churchill Downs Racetrack and the Kentucky Derby, while also diversifying into new and lucrative areas. Since joining CDI in 2005, he has elevated through the ranks to earn the title of the company’s 12th CEO in 2014 leading their diversification strategy into online wagering via TwinSpires.com, regional casino gaming and digital ventures like BigFish.com. Lauren DePaso is Director of Community Relations at Churchill Downs and recalls sitting down with Julia when she first joined the team. She shares, “Julia is proud of the CEO that Bill has become– and that’s been evident in the short time I’ve been with the company. I think one of the most interesting things about Julia with her extensive history in fine arts is that she has managed to keep that underlying passion at the forefront of her volunteer efforts in the community.” This year, more than ever, she will utilize her love for fine art to elevate the Derby fundraising social calendar. Asked to Chair the inaugural Oaks Brunch at the newly renovated Speed Art Museum hosted by the Speed pARTnership Board, it was an immediate fit. When Julia first moved to the city, she became a docent at the Speed Art Museum because she loved giving art tours. “One of my favorite memories as a docent was giving a tour to a refugee group from Africa,” Julia recalls. “They spoke very little English but I was told that they were comforted by visual art after leaving everything behind. I noticed a woman crying because a piece of art reminded her of home, and that was a great example of the universal connection of art and how it unites us and can lead to profound experiences.” Her commitment to the Speed Art Museum has not gone unnoticed by Ghislain d’Humieres, the Museum’s Director. Of Julia’s involvement, he says, “Her love for the arts, particularly the Speed, is inspirational. She is driven and passionate in her pursuit to make our community an artistic hub for creativity. It has been a pleasure to work alongside her on many projects and I look forward to even greater collaborations in the future.” As a member of the Board of Governors of the Speed Art Museum, Julia has assured the success of the first annual Oaks Brunch like no one else could. Not only will the brunch be a great opportunity to explore the strikingly renovated Museum, but additionally, Julia, along with the team at Churchill Downs Racetrack was able to help facilitate transportation for attendees from the Museum to Churchill Downs for Oaks – an accommodation that is worth the ticket price alone. Many guests will stay to enjoy Oaks day – Louisville’s unofficial holiday – at the Museum while others will depart for the track. Between races, Julia has also helped orchestrate a live shot from the Museum to highlight the wonderful first-time event. Lauren adds, “It’s the perfect way to highlight that if you aren’t at the track on Oaks Day, it’s okay, because people are celebrating this occasion all over the city, including at the Museum. It’s the perfect example of what Churchill Downs strives to do from a corporate standpoint because it ties in our iconic weekend and brand to the arts and cultural scene in Louisville.” Visit speedmuseum. continued on page 27

org for ticket information on Oaks Brunch. Some may ask what exactly is the connection between art and horse racing. Well, everything if Julia and Lauren DePaso have anything to do with it. Beyond the inaugural Oaks Brunch, Churchill Downs has formed a partnership that is being called the “perfect trifecta” for a cultural event that is already generating major buzz with a promise to grow exponentially every year. The Awards in the Arts to be held April 30, on Opening Night of Churchill Downs was established to celebrate the extraordinary arts community in the Greater Louisville region and the arts tremendous contribution to our unique cultural landscape. Of the inception of the event, Lauren recalls, “When I started this job at Churchill Downs last year, I wanted to create something with a meaningful impact to our community. Of course I turned to J.P. Davis, who is Vice President at Fund for the Arts. He was simultaneously having conversations with the Jennifer Lawrence Foundation who were interested in increasing their footprint in the city. It was a natural fit to combine forces with the same goal. It became less about associating horse racing with the arts, but about associating Churchill Downs with the Louisville community.” J.P. Davis speaks enthusiastically about the event and the partnership with Churchill Downs: “I really admire how Lauren stepped in as this new, young professional, and got everyone on board, and it’s been such a fun experience working with the team at the track to create this unique event. We chose Opening Night because that is a weekend where everyone in Kentucky and in the region can still afford tickets and get dinner and hotel reservations and really participate in this cultural event that also features the exceptional racing entertainment that we are accustomed to at Churchill Downs. This is just the first year, but like the Opening Ceremony of the Olympics, we want this to become the Opening Ceremony for the Kentucky Derby.” This promises to be more than just a party. The group aspires to create an annual event that will be the only time where these artists and cultural

groups will be together at one time. Julia, who is on the board for the Fund for the Arts, shares their mission for celebrating artists and engaging a younger generation. President and CEO of Fund for the Arts, Christen Boone, acknowledges, “Julia’s leadership in the arts community is significant. As a new member on our Board, she has already begun to make a difference in our organization, providing visionary support to our team in developing our inaugural Awards in the Arts. The Fund for the Arts will continue to be successful because of people like Julia stepping up and taking action. Her passion and commitment to growing arts in Louisville is inspiring and we are thrilled she’s on our team.” With major sponsors like Delta Dental and Brown Forman, there is one recognizable name that can’t be ignored – perhaps the most famous Kentuckian today, Jennifer Lawrence. Her foundation, headed by Jennifer’s sister-in-law, Meredith Lawrence and mother, Karen Lawrence, has already made notable contributions to local charities like Boys & Girls Club, West End School, St. Mary’s Center and the recent $2 million gift to Kosair Children’s Hospital, but they also wanted to focus on the Academy Award-winning actress’s commitment to the local arts in Louisville. This partnership was the perfect solution. Of course the name recognition has helped garner impressive SWAG from sponsors like Joy Mangano, Dior Beauty and Rodeo Drive. J.P. says, “It was important to the Jennifer Lawrence Foundation to create an event like nothing else the city has ever seen before.” Executive Director of the Jennifer Lawrence Foundation, Meredith Lawrence, joined the Fund for the Arts Board at the same time as Julia and shares, “I am so inspired by Julia’s support and passion for the arts.” And as for working with Lauren, she says, “Lauren is full of energy and spunk! She will stop at nothing to get things accomplished. She’s been an incredible partner who sees the true value of strategic community partnerships.” Karen Lawrence chimed in with, “Lauren is one of the most gregarious and dynamic young ladies I know. She exudes a charming and plucky wit while working diligently to get the job done.”

If you weren’t lucky enough to snag VIP reception tickets to the sold out event in the newly renovated Stakes Room, there is still ample opportunity for you to enjoy the local arts scene on Opening Night at the track. In fact, there will be 12 artist stations set up around the track doing art installations, performing live music and flash mobs, even interacting with the crowd in character – all curated by local art enthusiast and Owner of Revelry Gallery, Mo McKnight Howe. The Awards will also be presented in the Winner’s Circle and on the Big Board between races. Videos featuring the artists will be shown throughout the night as well. The inaugural Awards in the Arts winners are: The Bittners Arts Innovation Award – Teddy Abrams, The Yum! Brands Arts Education Award – StageOne Family Theatre, Lifetime Achievement in the Arts Award – Edward Hamilton, The University of Louisville Emerging Leaders in the Arts Award – Jecorey “1200” Arthur, and a National Award in the Arts that will be revealed on the night of the event. For more information, please visit awardsinthearts.fundforthearts.org. “What Fund for the Arts has brought to the table for us is other arts organizations noticing our commitment. It’s rewarding to be able to uphold the traditions of Churchill Downs while expanding our impact.” says DePaso. And, of course, with Julia’s continued involvement in a multitude of Louisville charities surrounding Derby and the arts, events like the Oaks Brunch and Awards in the Arts will continue to grow. Perhaps Karen Lawrence said it best when describing Julia: “I love the quote ‘the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,’ and that personifies Julia. For her, the first step is always to make art more accessible to the public and now, she raises the bar for all of us who strive to elevate the arts in Louisville. She is really the glue that brings this whole team together and we are lucky to have her involvement!” For Julia Carstanjen, Derby and art go hand in hand, and she is passionate that they both can be accessible to everyone.

Enjoy At Your Own Speed

T

he Speed Art Museum reopened to much fanfare following a $50 million renovation that started in September 2012. The grand reopening for the public revealed 80,000 square feet of renovated space and 75,000 square feet of exquisite new space and welcomed guests to enjoy for 30 hours of free nonstop activities. For many, they felt like they were finally returning “home,” while others were stepping into the Speed for the first time and for what the Museum hopes to be a long lasting relationship with both the art savvy and the art curious. The weekend kicked off with a ribbon-cutting ceremony that, in addition to Speed Art Museum Director Ghislain d’Humieres and architect, Kulapat Yantrasast, included Representative John Yarmuth and Governor Matt Bevin. Yarmuth addressed the crowd, saying, “This building is going to be a living testament to that essential truth that the product of human creativity is what sustains us and what represents our traditions and our cultures across time.” Bevin added, “Think about what an extraordinary gem this is for the city of Louisville, for the Commonwealth of Kentucky and for the nation, frankly. This is a preeminent art museum among the many that you see around the country and we are so fortunate in this city to have it in our own back yard.” What followed was what d’Humieres described as a collection of every expression of creativity imaginable to showcase the museum as the “hub of creativity” it should be for the community. He says, “This party is about showing people what the new Speed will be, and there is no better way than to show people what you plan to do than by doing it.” If those 30 hours of activity are indeed any indication of what the Speed will be showcasing now those long awaited doors are open, then you can expect something for everyone. And that is certainly the plan as the Museum embraces the opportunity to become the city’s cultural hub, bringing people of all ages and demographics together. The first indication that community outreach was of utmost priority to the newly renovated Speed Museum, was the unprecedented announcement that Brown-Forman Corporation was donating $1 million guaranteeing free admis-

sion to the Speed Art Museum on Sundays in what will come to be known as “Owsley Sundays,” a benefit that the community can enjoy through March 2021. Brown-Forman Vice Chairman James S. Welch, Jr. explained, “Brown-Forman has been a long-time benefactor of the Speed, and we are very pleased to make this contribution which benefits our entire community in honor of former BrownForman Chairman and CEO Owsley Brown II, who was one of Louisville’s most ardent arts’ patrons.” With the idea that making art accessible is essential to the well-being of our community, they have created Wall Together which pairs Speed educators with local organizations and nonprofit groups to promote community collaboration. Together, new works of art are created and displayed in the museum, giving everyone a chance to share their own unique perspective. Collaborations have included groups like Home of the Innocents, West End School and Maryhurst Academy. Additionally, Speed partners with location organizations like Actors Theatre of Louisville, Fund for the Arts and Louisville Visual Arts Association to provide educational programs to underserved communities in our area. From the redesigned Art Sparks with hands-on learning stations to help adults and children connect with art and each other to one of the newest attractions, the 142-seat Cinema that will screen a diverse mix of American independent and international films twice daily, Friday through Sunday, there really is something for everyone to enjoy at the new Speed Art Museum. Or get Speed Social at one of the monthly events featuring games, art-making, drinks and even “Speed” dating as you get to know the Speed collection. Of course becoming a member is a great way to contribute and take advantage of this most exciting time for the Speed Art Museum. Individual memberships start as low as $70 with family memberships starting at only $100 and include a plethora of benefits. For more information, visit speedmuseum.org. Tonya Abeln

River House A Chat with Chef John Varanese

S

ince Varanese opened in 2008, Chef John Varanese has been impressing the palates of his patrons with great food, impressive wine selections and frequent pairing events. The venture quickly enjoyed both the success of a hot new restaurant and eventually a Frankfort Avenue staple. While the concept has been embraced and adored through the years, Chef John has had his eye on a specific property with a view for some time now. With its grand opening on March 7, 2016 The River House is a great concept finally realized. Chef John says, “I’ve had my eye on this location since 2001 when I first signed an intent to lease the building. We put together architectural renderings for my concept in 2004 but the timing wasn’t right. I scaled back plans and went on to open Varanese in 2008, but I always kept my eye on the property. The location itself was a huge inspiration for the concept, being on the river. I wanted to offer good fresh seafood and draw upon southern cuisine influences and bring that Charleston/New Orleans coast feel to Louisville.” With seafood as the overarching menu theme, fresh sources are readily available – “We take huge advantage of having UPS as a hub in Louisville to get the freshest seafood to River House. Most of it comes from Bluefin and Sysco. But I also have some other resources in Honolulu and a fish monger in Florida and Alaska,” says the Chef. When asked about some of the more unique and popular menu items, the list was impressive. “The raw bar is a unique feature of the restaurant because there is nothing like it in Louisville. The grilled oysters are also very popular.

Other shining menu items include the Crispy Fried Avocado filled with a chilled shrimp, lump crab and bay scallop salad, the Slow-Braised Beef Short Rib with barbeque pan sauce and butter whipped potatoes topped with fried onion straws, and the Crispy Grouper Cheeks and Gulf Shrimp served over creamy lump crab-chive risotto, baby bok choy and finished with a spicy, smoked shrimp vinaigrette. The crispy grouper cheeks are flying out the door. We can’t seem to keep them in house!” Aside from the great selection of seafood and the striking modern interior, one of the biggest draws of River House is the location from where it draws its name. Sitting right on the Ohio River near The Water Tower, the views are impressive. The outdoor patio furniture and fire pits are being installed now and plan to be open for dining by April 1. The location also offers a separate space called The Levee. “Levee at the River House will be opening in early April. They will have a completely separate menu featuring more small plate and shareable options. Our hope is that families will enjoy getting together in this more casual space early, then we will feature live music late night and it will feel more like a lounge.” The River House has something for everyone. Just a quick shot down River Road from Downtown Louisville, it is a great place for after work cocktails, a family gathering, or a romantic dinner by the river. It is sure to become a new Louisville favorite! Jolea Brown

CHAT WITH THE CHAIR

Tonya York Day and Tammy York Dees Unbridled Eve

If Derby parties were a horse race, Unbridled Eve definitely burst out of the gate with an early lead this year with some major entertainment announcements. This year sets a new bar! Robin Thicke and Wynonna Judd are of course phenomenal and we rounded out our entertainment with some incredible, well-known rockers such as John Elefante (the former lead singer of the band Kansas) and Dennis DeYoung (the founder and former lead singer of Styx). We are incredibly gratified to hit all demographics in such an outstanding way!

You also host an annual event in Los Angeles in January called the Kentucky Derby Prelude Party. How did this come to be and how does it contribute to the big event in May? We work with so many great people in LA, it was a natural fit given the tie with horse racing, celebrities and centers of influence. It started as a cocktail party for 40 people at a private home and blossomed into the 600 plus, invitation-only party it is today. It has become an economic tool as we are able to highlight all the things that make our Commonwealth special, and the crown jewel of our state that is the Kentucky Derby by bringing southern charm to Hollywood. Best of all, we get to raise even more awareness for Unbridled Charitable Foundation and our amazing charity partners.

As sisters, you have used your very strong circle of influence to establish the Unbridled Charitable Foundation. Who are some of the beneficiaries of this impactful foundation? Unbridled Charitable Foundation is a 501c3, and while our primary beneficiary once again this year is Blessings in a Backpack, they are highlighted along with many others, including The Arrow Fund, Fund for the Arts, Boys and Girls Haven, Kentucky State Police Trooper Island Camp just to name a few. We believe in all of our charitable beneficiaries and feel honored that we are

able to contribute to their missions and help support the amazing work they do!

The element of surprise is what always sets Unbridled Eve apart from other Derby parties. We have a few really fun surprises up our sleeves this year for our guests. One of our favorite moments is the “All Star Jam” with all of our entertainers on stage together rocking it out. The dance floor is packed and the guests all love it! It started the year Luke Bryan was our headliner, and has become a tradition since!

Through the years, you have garnered some incredible celebrity guests for Unbridled Eve; but you have also nurtured some of those into loyal supporters for the important causes for which the event benefits. Talk to us about some of the generous folks who have transitioned from party guest to friend. The friends we have made through Unbridled are some of the most steadfastly wonderful and loyal people we have come across! Bob Guiney, Nora Roberts, Robin Meade, NFL Hall of Famer Warren Moon and Linda Thompson, are prime examples of wonderful friendships that have blossomed out of the magic that is the Kentucky Derby experience. The generosity and ease with which these people donate their time, funds and experiences is inspiring.

What do you want people to know about Unbridled Charitable Foundation and Unbridled Eve? That our amazing committee of dedicated and passionate volunteers are the ones that make this happen. They work tirelessly and it is their efforts, along with our incredible sponsors such as Southern Wine and Spirits, Delta Dental, Churchill Downs, and Manna Inc. that allow us to raise the funds and awareness to support our charity partners! We feel very blessed. tonya abeln

roger’s Louisville footprint spreads across 29 grocery stores, employing 5,000 people, and typically ranks top 10 as a largest Kentucky employer. Walking into your local grocer, you will notice plenty of local produce, as for over a decade Kroger has been one of the largest buyers of Kentucky meats and produce, and neighborhood themed murals by local artists created from a partnership with Louisville Visual Arts. With a focus on supporting local family farms which floods back into Louisville’s economy, Kroger is selflessly generous too. Forbes mentioned Kroger in 2013 ranking as the 6th most generous company in America for donating $76 million in cash alone. “Historically Kroger has been pretty humble about the things it accomplishes in the community,” Tim McGurk said. McGurk, the Public Affairs Manager of the Louisville Kroger Division, has been with Kroger since 1978, starting out as a cashier to save money for a used car. He now serves on the board of directors for the Kentucky Grocers’ Association and Kentucky Retail Federation, and while joining the board for the Kentucky Derby Festival this past year, he has been involved in details of the Derby much longer. Kroger is dubbed the official “Florist of Champions” as they have crafted the garland of roses for the Kentucky Derby winner since 1987, and started making the “Lilies for the Fillies” garland in 1991 for the winner of the Kentucky Oaks. Kroger’s long-standing floral designers share this tradition with their customers in a store open to the public, this year in the Middletown Kroger on Shelbyville Road the Thursday and Friday before Oaks and Derby. Ninety hours of work go into making the rose garland using 460 handpicked “Freedom Roses”

grown to Rainforest Alliance Certified standards in Bogota, Columbia. “It’s amazing the thousands of people who show up just to get a glimpse of the garland being made,” McGurk said. “It is quite the sight to see.” The garland is transported in a glass case while receiving police escort from the store to Churchill Downs. Kroger also sponsors The Survivors Parade, a breast cancer survivor walk before Oaks. As this year is the 142nd Derby, 142 survivors have been nominated to walk in the parade. “It’s a beautiful spectacle,” McGurk said. “Bringing Hope to the Table” serves as Kroger’s signature campaign to support Dare to Care and other food banks in surrounding communities, providing 270 million meals for hungry families last year. The Louisville Kroger is also the title sponsor of the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Walk and each year over 500 associates participate, usually raising over $150,000 alone. Kroger’s “Shop and Share” event happens once a year in which volunteers collect money and store-bought donations from associates and customers for the 15 domestic abuse shelters in Kentucky. Despite the elevated focus on hunger relief, women’s health and the United Service Organization, Kroger still offers financial support to thousands of worthy nonprofits through the Kroger Community Rewards program. Kroger will distribute $50 million this year, including $3.6 million from the Louisville division alone. Kroger is involved with Susan G. Komen, Gilda’s Club, Muscular Dystrophy Association, Urban League, Junior Achievement, American Diabetes Association, Metro United Way, Crusade for Children, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts of America, Norton Cancer Hospital, Kentucky One/ James Graham Brown Cancer Center and more. pril is a busy month for the difference makers at Kosair Charities. As an organization that seeks to “protect the health and well-being of children in Kentucky and Southern Indiana by providing financial support for clinical services, research, pediatric healthcare education, and child advocacy,” a kick off rally and silent auction are big events that can impact the lives of many. On April 1st, Kosair Charities partnered with other area children service agencies to kick off Child Abuse Prevention Month. The kickoff, held on the Big Four Bridge, included a rally and a march. On April 21st, Hats for Hope will hold a silent auction of donated Derby hats with all proceeds this year benefitting Kosair Charities. The goal for this year’s auction is to meet and exceed last year’s proceeds of $65,500. The silent auction will allow guests to shop for the most stylish three minutes in sports while also giving to a worthy cause. Hats for Hope 2016 will be held at the Triple Crown Pavilion and Conference Center and will feature hundreds of Derby hats as well as gift baskets available for silent auction. Attendees will be able to choose from designer and gently used Derby hats that will appeal to an array of styles and tastes. For ideas on pairing hats and frocks, Faith Hatcher and Erika Clark will model hats and Talbots will showcase their new spring fashions. Media Personalities, Ron and Mel, will return as celebrity MC’s. In addition to Derby fashion, attend-

ees will also enjoy delicious hors d’oeuvres, samples from The Comfy Cow, desserts by Heitzman’s Bakery, and the signature drink, “Pink Hope.” To document the evening, Showtime Photo Booth will also be available. We’re assured there will be abundant free parking and Xtreme Shuttle Transportation will transport attendees to and from the nearby parking lot. This year, Hats for Hope organizers expect over 300 guests to peruse and bid on the wide selection of Derby hats donated over the past year. The event has long been regarded as a “must-attend” for philanthropic fashionistas for their headpiece offerings and as a trusted destination to secure the crowning piece for their Derby look. To see for yourself the variety that has been available in the past, pictures of the 2015 hats are available on the website, hatsforhopelouisville.org. All proceeds from the sale of the hats and gift baskets will help to support the efforts of Kosair Charities and will directly impact those in need in our community. While all donations are welcome and appreciated, of course the best way to participate and contribute is to secure your tickets now. Tickets are $30 in advance and $40 the night of the event: a great bargain for the chance to purchase a stylish Derby hat while giving back to the community. For more information on the event, visit hatsforhopelouisville.org. For more information on Kosair Charities, visit kosair.org. LAuRen SCHuHmAnn

MnO Salon:

Inspired by Your Possibilities Beauty trends come and go but looking your best never goes out of style. Never more does this city put its best foot, head and hat forward in the beauty and style department than Derby season. Luckily, MnO Salon can have you looking like the celebrity guest of every brunch, parade, race day or gala on your agenda this year. Furthermore, it’s a fine idea to indulge in a little bit of relaxation before all the hectic activities begin, which is exactly the environment that MnO Salon offers along with personalized service that goes beyond what you expect. While MnO rolls off the tongue easily (after all, it is the fastest part of the alphabet), the name and the concept came to be when Owners Meghan Russo and Olivia Thompson decided to combine their initials and their strengths from working in the industry together for over a decade. Olivia was driven by her love for fashion and knew a salon was a pivotal way to contribute to someone’s overall look. Meghan, on the other hand, had always been immersed in the hair industry and recalls, “I was the one doing everyone’s hair in high school for prom. I just always knew this was what I was going to do.” What makes the duo such a stellar team is their commitment to impeccable standards and a welcoming atmosphere. Meghan shares, “Everyone on our team is friends in and out of work and our clients can really feel like they are part of that when they walk in the door.” Olivia adds, “They know they can talk to us

about anything. We are here to support our clients any way we can. We’re all friends and family here.” Meghan, Olivia and their team of stylists plan to keep it that way saying, “We started our own business because we wanted to keep our service personalized and really wanted to know each and every guest that walks in our door.” But, they assure, staying small also means staying current and up to date on the latest in hair care techniques and education. The salon uses all Lanza products which is a natural plant-based brand which Olivia says she loves because, “the color is amazing and we wanted something that makes the hair feel great when you walk out the door.” Their advice for Derby looks this year? Be bold! Meghan advises, “Whatever you do, don’t be ordinary. Instead of just curling your hair and adding your hat or fascinator, consider a funky braid instead to accent your headpiece.” Or better yet, book your appointment with MnO Salon and let them show you exactly what to do for our city’s most stylish day of the year. Whether it’s Derby, your wedding, or just maintaining your personal style, the team at MnO want you to be the best version of the person you want to be and will infuse you with confidence through a look you already love or ease you through the trepidation of discovering something completely new. Even if you are walking in for the first time, you will certainly walk out feeling like part of the family and looking your absolute best.

Billed as “Louisville’s Winter Warmer Beer Festival,” Tailspin featured more than 150 craft beers in the revived WWII era airplane hangar at the oldest continually operating airfield in North America.

The Kentucky Derby Festival Jacket — A Style Statement

Circa 1970’s, 1980’s and 1990’s

T

hey are, without a doubt, the most widely recognized – and some would say reviled – item of corporate apparel in the city. To some they elicit pride; to others a slight cringe, but for better or for worse, they are unique to Kentucky Derby Festival. They are, of course, the uniform jackets worn by KDF staff, board members and past chairs and they symbolize our city’s favorite time of the year. The idea for an official jacket originated when KDF joined the International Festivals and Events Association in 1972 as a way to make board members stand out in a crowd and to raise awareness of the Derby Festival. Originally burgundy in color, the first incarnation of KDF’s official jacket was first worn in 1973, and was paired with black-and-white checkered pants for men and skirts for women. In 1976, a navy jacket was unveiled with gold Pegasus icons. In 1990, the KDF Spring Fashion Show was conceived as the venue for unveiling the new uniform, which was the infamous teal and pink jacket. KDF staff and board members wear jackets of the same color while current and past Festival chairs are distinguished by wearing jackets in reverse combination. In 2006, a committee was formed to discuss new color options and landed on a subtler scheme of khaki and black. What people may not know is that board members are responsible for paying for their own jackets and Rodes, the Official Uniform Provider for KDF, helps keep the cost down, though they are custom designed and tailored by some of Rodes’ finest apparel vendors. For more than 20 years, NBC news personality Willard Scott has worn his Festival jacket while providing commentary for the Republic Bank Pegasus Parade. Other dignitaries who traditionally wear their KDF jackets each spring include the Mayor of Louisville and the Governor of Kentucky.
