Caregivers in Mississippi will be more in the loop when it comes to overseeing the wellbeing of those they are caring for, thanks to state lawmakers. Magnolia State legislators also changed the language in the state’s certificate-of-need process so it won’t be as costly for medical centers damaged or destroyed in a natural disaster to rebuild.

And Mississippi finally joined the majority of other states that have taken steps to ensure the health and safety of motorists by banning the dangerous practice of texting while driving. These were among some of the main healthcare-related measures approved by state lawmakers in Mississippi during the 2015 legislative session. While members of the healthcare profession didn’t get every bill passed they would have liked, they did find that most legislators were supportive of many of their measures. For most healthcare professionals, biomedical waste isn’t something one thinks about often. The founders of a startup waste disposal company would like to keep it that way. “It’s kind of an out-of-sight, out-of-mind service – until it’s not,” said John Alford, who launched GreenServ Inc. in Oxford three years ago with partner Will Fountain. “If you’re a healthcare provider, you’re required by the Department of Health to have a contracted arrangement to dispose of your medical waste,” Alford said. “We saw that there was room in the market for someone who could provide extremely good customer service and fair pricing. Starting this venture also gave us a chance to create jobs here in Mississippi.” (CONTINUED ON PAGE 8)
