Dr. Ming Wang Harvard & MIT (MD, magna cum laude); PhD (laser physics) Performed surgeries on over 4,000 doctors Dr. Ming Wang, Harvard & MIT (MD, magna cum laude); PhD (laser physics), is one of the few cataract and LASIK surgeons in the world today who holds a doctorate degree in laser physics. He has performed over 55,000 procedures, including on over 4,000 doctors (hence he has been referred to as “the doctors’ doctor”).

Dr. Wang currently is the only surgeon in the state who offers 3D LASIK (age 18+), 3D Forever Young Lens surgery (age 40+) and 3D laser cataract surgery (age 60+). he Cheekwood mansion is turning back the clock.

To spearhead this exciting endeavor, the organization hired Leslie Jones as its new curator of decorative arts and historic interpretation. She will restore the home’s interior to reflect the original 1930s private residence of the Cheek family.

Leslie received her bachelor’s degree in art and architecture at Miami of Ohio and went on to obtain a master’s in the history of decorative arts through a program run by the Smithsonian. She comes to Cheekwood from the White House Historical Association, where she was curator and director of historical resources and programming.

Leslie brings her experience and expertise to the project as she begins a year of research into the history of the estate, the Cheeks and the home’s original architect, Bryant Fleming.

Built between 1929 and 1932, Cheekwood is considered one of the best surviving examples of an estate from the American Country Place Era. A 2011 visitor survey revealed a desire to learn more about the his-

tory of the property and the mansion’s interior design. Leslie and the Cheekwood team plan to do just that.

Several rooms throughout the home will be restored to reflect their original purpose, including ones that have never been available to the general public. Among them are the family’s recreation room and mother-inlaw suite. The loggia, drawing room, library and dining room will also be restored.

In an effort to accurately reflect the furnishings and décor of the home’s original design, Leslie and her team will use many of the pieces that the Cheek family has loaned and donated to the mansion over the years. They also plan to use reproductions, which will allow for handson interaction in certain aspects of the home. “It’s not just going to be exhibit labels and text panels,” says Leslie. “It’s the physical immersion into these spaces that brings to life the 1930s era when the Cheeks were living here.”

Cheekwood plans to open the restored rooms to the public in 2017, so stay tuned!

As the sun went down, spirits kept rising—fueled by some hoppy brews—as the crowd got hoppin’ to live music from a variety of bands playing throughout the grounds. For those who really wanted to be a kid again, they could take a spin on the giant carousel.

the CMA Fest festivities at the Ryman Auditorium with their annual Stars for Second Harvest benefit. For the 11th year in a row, chart-topping songwriter Craig Wiseman hosted the lively concert, calling on friends both new and old to fill the roster.

“Every year you think it’s going to get easier,” Craig said. “It never gets easier. It’s always crazy. But here we are 11 years later, and I think we’re going to go past a million dollars this year.”

Despite it being a tough job, Craig manages to deliver every single year at lining up an all-star cast to perform.

can’t wait to see who shows up on stage next year. As for Craig’s dream performers? “[Kenny] Chesney still owes me,” he joked. “I’m on a sevenyear rain check from him.” Craig also hinted that a future show could include sets from Blake Shelton and Steven Tyler. We’ll be first in line for that!

Party. The line to enter the home ran down the steps of the expansive front porch and onto the drive as guests waited to congratulate builder Alan Looney of Castle Homes and architect Wade Weissmann on the elegant and charming home.

The line slowed again as all stopped to admire the timeless spaces on the main level designed by Mark Simmons. The crowd flowed through the rooms and past the outdoor living areas to the huge tent where Mark and participating designers Rozanne Jackson of The Iron Gate and Julie Couch could be found in the throng.

Daisy King and Troy Marden regaled the crowd with tales from the successful garden party that they co-hosted with Meryl Rose the day before.

Symphony president and CEO Alan Valentine said, “We are extremely thrilled and grateful to be a part of this unique initiative, which will provide valuable support for the Nashville Symphony’s ongoing work throughout Middle Tennessee.”

Guests enjoyed appetizers including baby shrimp cocktail and cornbread BLT from Bacon & Caviar before returning to the house for a more leisurely look. Music provided by a symphony string quartet floated through the party.

Among those oohing and aahing over the interiors of the stunning home were Sissy Simmons, Kate Simmons, Glen Oxford, Ginny Garrett, Martin and Tab Choate, Amy and Keith Simpkins, Jade and Snake Reynolds, and Steve Brosvik, Alan and Jan Valentine, Kevin Coffey.

Past performers at the event have included Tim McGraw, Keith Urban, Jon Bon Jovi, Florida Georgia Line and Nelly, and this year’s line-up was just as fantastic. The fundraiser welcomed Chip Esten, Chris Carmack, and Lennon and Maisy Stella from Nashville, along with Cole Swindell and headliner Dierks Bentley. After a VIP meet-and-greet with the Nashville stars, the show kicked off with a round from songwriters Sarah Buxton, Rodney Clawson, Chris Tompkins and Matt Dragstrem. Along with Craig, the writers performed an impressive collection of their No. 1 hits, ranging from Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats” to Kenny Chesney’s “American Kids.” The Nashville cast took the stage next, performing two songs apiece (and earning multiple standing ovations), before Cole and Dierks closed out the show.

The sold-out event raised more than $140,000 for Second Harvest’s mission to end hunger across Middle Tennessee, resulting in $1 million raised since the event’s inception. We

ore than 500 patrons of the 16th annual Red Shoe Party channeled their inner Dorothy and descended upon the Country Music Hall of Fame in their brightest ruby-hued footwear. Co-chairs Trudy Bloodworth, Rebecca Kauffman and Tiffany Johns did a terrific job weaving their “Welcome to the Emerald City” theme throughout this colorful benefit for the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program. And there was much to celebrate! For more than 30 years, CASA Nashville has provided advocates to abused and neglected children to help them navigate the uncertain and complex journey of the court system and foster care. Just like Glinda guiding Dorothy through the Land of Oz, CASA makes sure these kids find their way to safe and permanent homes.

Guests sipped specialty emerald cocktails and grew green with envy at the tempting silent auction, filled with autographed guitars, beautiful beach homes and mouthwatering dining experiences. Grammy-nominated songwriter Amanda Williams performed before an exciting live auction and a sweet and savory seated dinner. Afterward, everyone migrated to the stage to kick up one’s (red) heels and dance to The Pat Patrick Band.

Toward the end of the evening, juvenile court judge Sheila Calloway announced that Chris Haemmerlein and Michael Scott had won the Red Shoe Contest, which was certainly a difficult decision as there were so many creative contenders. Jamie Brown sported a hat trimmed with red high heels (which were ice cube molds she found online). Even the men went all out this year, practically depleting Nashville of red Chuck Taylors. Yes, Nordstrom reported running out of their entire inventory!

This fabulous party had it all. And as each guest followed their own yellow brick road home, they could rest content in knowing that they had helped create a little magic of their own that night.

Abracadabra The JDRF Promise Gala is a magical night

T

he audience was spellbound as Jason Michaels, host and entertainer for the 15th annual JDRF Promise Gala, wiggled and writhed to unravel himself from a tightly bound straightjacket. This dramatic feat symbolized the struggles of daily life for those living with Type 1 diabetes. With the help of a lovely assistant, he performed astonishing acts of illusion for the elegant crowd of 600 at the Omni Hotel. This year’s “Magical Night for a Cure” was chaired by Sally and Jon Nesbitt, whose daughter Katherine was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 7 and served as the night’s Fund a Cure speaker.

Music filled the lobby as guests sipped cocktails and bid on items in the silent auction before moving to the Broadway Ballroom for dinner. Tables were polished in colors of maroon, black and silver with vases of white roses. Sally and Jon thanked their huge committee of volunteers for the success of the evening before recognizing the outstanding leadership of executive director Mary Lyn Schuh, who echoed JDRF’s call to change “Type 1 to Type None.”

Honorees Kathryn Brown and John Brock humbly accepted awards for their work with presenting sponsor Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt.

Kathryn gave a heartfelt nod to the partnership between JDRF and the children’s hospital. John also took the opportunity to applaud the hospital’s hard-working staff of physicians, nurses and administrators currently treating as many as 3,000 children with Type 1.

The evening ended as guests raised bid cards like magic wands for the Fund a Cure auction. But the final act was no illusion as supporters and sponsors helped to raise a record-breaking $825,000.

econd Harvest Food Bank invited 25 of Nashville’s best restaurants to bring their finest bite-sized offerings to City Winery for a friendly competition supporting a good cause. Guests were asked to “Eat. Drink. Give back.” at the annual Generous Helpings tasting event benefiting the Culinary Arts Scholarship Fund at Nashville State Community College and Second Harvest programs fighting hunger throughout Middle Tennessee.

The sold-out crowd, which included several local foodies, came hungry and happily obliged this call to action. Melissa Corbin favored Porter Road Butcher’s kielbasa with Yazoo Pale Ale mustard and the Caffé Nonna meatballs. Beth Sachan raved about several dishes, but her beverage of choice was a refreshing grapefruit Stiegl Radler (also a favorite among the Steeplechase crowd last month). Emcee Brad Schmitt livened the crowd with his always-colorful commentary and introduced event chair Susan Goodwin. Later in the evening, Brad moonlighted as auctioneer for eager bidders vying for the abundant restaurant packages and stocked wine fridge from Cenwood.

Creative spins on comfort food seemed to be a crowd-pleasing theme. Chauhan Ale & Masala House’s “Desi” Fritos pie—served in individual Fritos bags—was an inventive take on an old classic; Amerigo’s pulled pork pasta and City Winery’s risotto balls satiated hungry guests crowding the entry; and Hattie B’s fried skins and pimento mac and cheese was an unexpected (and spicy!) sensation. For those with a sweet tooth, Goo Goo Cluster passed out their addictive peanut butter and pretzel premiums, and City House’s Rebekah Turshen wowed with ricotta bomboloni using buttermilk panna cotta and lemon rhubarb marmalade. After guests had reached their limit, the overall winner was announced: The Southern’s short rib and Kenny’s Farmhouse smoked Gouda grilled cheese sandwich with pickled red onion and herbed butter.

It’s no secret that Nashville loves to eat local, and support a good cause in the process, but kudos to Second Harvest for combining the two into one generous fundraiser.

The Nashville Rep celebrates 30 years at River REPrise

A

ctors, playwrights and patrons of the stage gathered at the home of Sylvia and Al Ganier for the Nashville Rep’s River REPrise. This year’s end-ofseason celebration also marked the 30th anniversary for the organization.

Green Door Gourmet chef Richard Jones incorporated fresh produce from the Ganier family farm throughout the meal. A classic pianist played show tunes as guests circled the bountiful spread of creamed greens and garlic crostini, local asparagus in lemon oil, beef brisket on yeast rolls, Jack Daniels cured salmon, ramp pesto torte and a mountainous bowl of shrimp cocktail.

The always-charismatic president of the board, Vicki Horne, welcomed the group. Producing artistic director René Copeland reflected on this important time in the organization’s history as they celebrate this milestone anniversary and embrace the future under their new identity as the Nashville Repertory Theatre.

Looking back, René emphasized the challenges of starting a new company as “not for the faint of heart” before jokingly adding, “right, Martha?” Sitting front and center, Martha Ingram—who co-founded the Tennessee Repertory Theatre in 1985— responded with applause. Guests nibbled on chocolate truffles and Tennessee strawberry cupcakes as Nashville actors Jenny Littleton and Denice Hicks shared personal stories about the evening’s honoree, David Alford. The accomplished Juilliard graduate and former Rep director—also known as Nashville’s Bucky Dawes—graciously accepted the Rep’s Applause Award, which came in the form of a sterling silver julep cup. Sylvia instantly offered to make him a “famous Ganier mint julep” in his new award, which David happily accepted.

The evening continued with an intimate Q-and-A with The Whipping Man’s Eddie George and a toast to the playwrights who recently read their plays at the Ingram New Works Festival. Many more glasses were raised in merriment to the upcoming 2015-2016 season, which kicks off with Pulitzer Prize-nominated Rapture, Blister, Burn and Tony Award-winning Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead.

A different plan Show Hope hosts a family affair under the stars

W

hen Edee and Don Orr opened the doors to their beautiful Belle Meade home—or rather, their backyard—it wasn’t just for another dinner party among friends. This starlit supper was an intimate fundraiser for Mary Beth and Steven Curtis Chapman’s organization, Show Hope, which helps orphaned children find their forever families. Along with event hosts Carissa and Tim Pereira and Tracie and Scott Hamilton, guests enjoyed a cocktail hour at dusk under a tent in the Orrs’ backyard.

Everyone sat for a light meal of salad, pasta and strawberry shortcake while Edee and Don took the stage to share their own story of why Show Hope is so close to their family’s hearts. If you know Edee and Don, you know that they’ve been married for more than 30 years and share a passion for adoption. When their two adopted sons were teenagers, the family took a trip to China, which led them to the missing piece of their family, MollyKate. There was hardly a dry eye in the tent as Don recalled the story. And he was visibly moved when he said, “The Lord had a different plan, and look what I got.”

Of course, anyone who didn’t already know the adorable MollyKate met her earlier that evening when they checked in. Seeing this complete family onstage was an emotional moment for all, a true testament to the importance of Show Hope’s mission. The evening raised funds for the organization’s Special Care Centers in China, which offer medical care for orphans with special needs.

Mary Beth Chapman—whom Edee described as “a force of nature”—then took the stage, holding hands with her husband, Steven. They told the story of Show Hope, and Mary Beth explained, “There’s no way we couldn’t use a platform to tell people about children who need homes.” The Chapmans have achieved that, and then some.

O

nce again, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee managed to bring a little Hollywood style to Music City at their annual Great Futures Gala.

Veteran actor, B&G Clubs alum and all-around handsome man Dylan McDermott was the guest of honor at this year’s fundraiser, which was held at the Omni Hotel.

Prior to the party, Dylan spent the afternoon with kids at the Andrew Jackson Clubhouse, an experience he called “incredible” and “inspiring.” A former Club kid himself, Dylan couldn’t overstate how much he values the organization’s ability to provide hope, safety and community to kids who need it most. It’s a message that resonated with every one of the gala’s attendees, who had the opportunity to witness firsthand the impact that the Boys & Girls Clubs are having across Middle Tennessee.

After a silent auction and lively cocktail hour, the program kicked off in the Broadway Ballroom with remarks from co-chairs Jensen Sessums and Jerry Bostelman. President and CEO Dan Jernigan introduced a moving video that allowed the audience to “see the Club through the eyes of a child,” a theme that continued throughout the entire night as Club kids took the stage to share their remarkable stories. One such story came from 2015 Youth of the Year Queen McElrath, a 16-year-old musician whose original song “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot” went viral last fall. Just three years ago, Queen was a runaway who struggled with depression and had no vision for the future. She joined the Club because of their recording studio facilities and ended up discovering a sense of purpose and hope.

“It didn’t just change my life,” Queen said. “It saved my life.” Queen is one of countless kids with an amazing story to tell about the transformative work of the Boys & Girls Clubs. Thanks to the generous attendees at the Great Futures Gala, which raised an impressive $437,000, these stories will continue to be written for years to come.

Horsing around Mother Nature came to play at the Music Country Grand Prix

T

he 27th annual Music Country Grand Prix—the largest fundraiser benefiting Saddle Up!—was held at the bucolic Brownland Farm in Franklin. Every year, storms loom over this event, yet the rain miraculously disappears before the opening of the gates. This year was no exception. The clouds parted just in time for riders from across the nation to compete for the coveted $40,000 purse and for guests—nearly 1,000 in attendance!—to enjoy this premier show jumping competition.

Saddle Up! provides equine-assisted therapy programs to children and youth with disabilities. Two of their students—9-year-old Peach, who is soon to graduate from her program, and 5-year-old Daniel, who just started—presented the color guard on horseback. Once again, Jennifer Pennington and Sarah Ingram co-chaired this family-fun event. When asked how long they planned to continue their generous contributions, Sarah laughingly replied, “I don’t see a way out!” No doubt the folks at Saddle Up! are thrilled with that answer.

This year was bigger than ever. The People Prix (where children and adults compete in their own obstacle course) was packed with participants; the silent auction was nearly double the size of last year’s; and there were a slew of sponsors including the 10-year “Grand Champion” sponsor, Tractor Supply Company. The Patrons Tent seated more than 500 guests for a summer supper of brisket, barbecue chicken, and a selection of Southern sides, salads and sweet treats provided by Wild Iris and Puckett’s Grocery and Restaurant.

A light rain returned later in the day but only on the side of the tent where the competition was held. The sun was shining brightly on the other! (Mother Nature can have quite a sense of humor.) Certainly, there was a rainbow close by with a pot of gold or at least good fortune for the many Grand Prix supporters who have raised more than $1 million for Saddle Up! over the last 27 years.

Dads’ day American Diabetes Association honors fathers of the year

T

he 15th annual Father of the Year Awards—presented by the regional chapter of the Father’s Day Council in partnership with the American Diabetes Association—was held at the Omni Hotel. Colleagues, friends and family members gathered to honor Carl Haley, a father of five, CEO of Grand Avenue Worldwide and CRO of Gray Line; and Sean Henry, a father of four and president and COO of the Nashville Predators and Bridgestone Arena.

Signature cocktails in shades of blue—the Tennessee Breeze was a popular choice—were passed around the pre-dinner reception as guests strolled along the silent auction tables to stake their claim on a variety of gift packages and dining experiences. Dinner was a low-carb menu of roasted gala apple and endive salad, entrées of horseradish-crusted filet drizzled in a white butter bordelaise sauce with scalloped potatoes or herbed chicken with seasonal vegetable sauté, and fruit tart with crème anglaise and sorghum berry coulis for dessert.

The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the testimonies from kids who attend Camp Sugar Falls, a local beneficiary that teaches children about managing their Type 1 diabetes in a fun camp environment. TJ Terrell, a former camper turned counselor-in-training, shared his experience at camp alongside his brother Ashton, a “sibling camper” who joined TJ to learn more about his condition and lifestyle changes.

Following a poignant video tribute to the two honorees, their children—who endearingly shared stories about what makes their dads so deserving—were accompanied by emcee Nancy Van Camp to present the awards.

The event raises funds for diabetes research, education and advocacy while recognizing fathers who place an emphasis on family and community service. Since its inception, the partnership of the Father’s Day Council and the American Diabetes Association has raised more than $35 million for the Stop Diabetes campaign.

Piece by piece Boots & Bow Ties brings patrons together for Autism Speaks

T

he fourth annual Boots & Bow Ties—a fundraiser benefiting the Tennessee chapter of Autism Speaks—was an evening of fun, food and music while raising awareness for autism advocacy. The Hutton Hotel was lit up in shades of blue for the intimate gathering.

After walking the blue carpet, guests stopped to pose in the photo booth, adorning themselves with blue boas, cowboy hats and puzzle pieces. Blue is the color of Autism Speaks, and the puzzle piece is the symbol of autism awareness. Co-chairs Deanna Nelson and Lisa Burgess were thrilled by the positive response of the crowd to the chosen theme that was reflected throughout the ballroom.

The Hutton’s catering provided a delicious dinner of artisan greens, flat iron steak with cornbread hoecakes and a decadent dulce de leche chocolate dome for dessert. Fox 17’s Erin Como hosted the program that included Maeghan Pawley and Lorri Unumb of Autism Speaks sharing highlights from the past decade of progress. Mike Wasmer, director of state government affairs for Autism Speaks, discussed current advocacy efforts and presented Rep. Kevin Brooks of the 24th District with the 2015 Legislative Champion Award.

The silent auction boasted exotic trips, jewelry, spa experiences and puzzlepiece art. Following a flurry of last-minute bidding, guests put down the pens, loosened their bow ties and kicked up their boots on the dance floor. The Pilots kept the party going with their library of classic tunes. When the night came to an end, everyone stopped by the candy bar en route to the valet for a sweet reminder of a special night.

Feelin’ groovy Peace, love and music reign supreme at Sounds of the ’70s

T

he 1970s have often been referred to as the “Decade of Decadence,” which couldn’t have been better reflected than at the recent benefit for the Nashville Conflict Resolution Center. The Sounds of the ’70s theme (last year’s event paid tribute to the ’60s) clearly inspired patrons who came dressed up and ready for a little debauchery. This crowd of supporters proved to be quite the creative couturiers ready for a good time and dressing the part.

Event hosts Bette and Mark Christofersen greeted their guests as John Lennon and Yoko Ono while offering peace beads from the middle of a king-size bed. Jodie Barringer wore a macramé maxi skirt and crop top. When asked where she had gotten her outfit, she sighed, “Unfortunately, I had all of this.” Tom and Kathy Patten were a spot-on impersonation of Sonny and Cher. Tom did admit that it was the same wig he wore to the ’60s event as tennis ace Jimmy Connors. David Conrad and Bill Heyne caused the biggest uproar as they wiggled and writhed in full costume as the Festrunk Brothers or, as they were more commonly referred to on SNL, “two wild and crazy guys.”

The NCRC provides professional mediation services and workshops for all types of disputes, either for free or on a sliding scale. This party was only the second fundraiser for the organization. Tables were decorated in psychedelic linens with centerpieces of ’70s rock ‘n’ roll albums. Following a dinner catered by Kalamatas, patrons danced the night away to ’70s cover band Vinyl Radio. No doubt this is an event that is here to stay. We can’t wait to see what the ’80s party will bring!

ore than 1,600 attendees sprawled across the lawn of First Presbyterian Church of Nashville to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Miss Martha’s Ice Cream Crankin’ & Summer Social benefiting the Martha O’Bryan Center.

Purity Dairy hosted the summertime tradition and offered one lucky competitor the opportunity to turn their homemade recipe into an official Purity flavor.

Ice cream lovers of all ages sampled scoops along Coconut Grove, Sherbet Square, Lemon Lane and Vanilla Valley. Local congregations competed with their best blends, and several businesses and nonprofit organizations volunteered for setup and cleanup duties. It was truly a community event with helpers from Hands On Nashville and the Vanderbilt football team pitching in for the festivities. In addition to the homemade varieties, Purity Dairy provided scoops of their bestselling selections, assorted popsicles, classic Dair-E Lemonade and Jungle Juice Fruit Punch. The Pied Piper Creamery’s Space Jam and the Martha O’Bryan Center’s Explore S’mores were two non-competing favorites.

Scores from the judges’ panel were split into four categories: Vanilla-based, Chocolate-based, “Other” and Best of Show. Linda Hostettler’s Chocolate Caramel Crunch & S’more and Mayme Lee Lawrence’s Lemony-Rasby took home blue ribbons for the chocolate and “other” categories respectively, while Amy Griffith’s Zesty Lemon Snap took the top honors for vanilla-based flavor and Best of Show.

Kids competed in the Purity Ice Cream Eating Contest (but we’re pretty sure they were just happy to participate).

Music by Jason Eskridge & Friends kept everyone dancing throughout the afternoon, while magicians and balloon artists provided entertainment for the kids. As the event drew to a close, the crowd reluctantly made their way to the parking lot—sugar rushes, sunburns and all—happy to have contributed to another successful Ice Cream Crankin’ for the Martha O’Bryan Center’s mission to support families in poverty through education, stability and career opportunities.

T

he foyer of the Belle Meade Country Club was buzzing with excitement at the Swan Ball Auction Party as supporters of the venerable Cheekwood fundraiser longed to steal a peek at the fabulous lots up for bid. The Swan Ball Auction Committee, comprised of roughly 100 volunteers and led this year by Cathy East and Carolyn Taylor, works tirelessly all year to acquire extravagant trips, once-in-a-lifetime opportunities and luxury items. Judging from the packed house and the fervent determination of guests to outbid their friends, it’s safe to say the committee’s hard work paid off yet again.

The silent auction was divided into two sections (travel and treasures) and was displayed on opposite ends of the club to keep crowds from bottlenecking. The terrace was staged with a tent for the live auction (led by Sotheby’s auctioneer Kevin Doyle), keeping the flow of traffic moving throughout the entire night. Servers passed delicious and inventive hors d’œuvres—including hot chicken and waffle bites, individual shrimp cocktail parfaits, cheeseburger sliders and mini caprese salads—as the crowd mulled over the 70+ impressive items up for grabs.

The event signified the official start of the Swan Ball festivities, an exciting reality that wasn’t lost on Swan Ball co-chairs Kathleen Estes and Barby White. “This is really going to happen,” Barby joked, adding, “It feels like the week of our wedding.”

Auction co-chairs Cathy and Carolyn shared their enthusiasm as they gushed over the incredible auction lots, which included 25 international trips like a Tanzanian safari or a bike trip across the Czech Republic and Austria. They also raved about their volunteers, the deep-rooted friendship formed between them and the legacy of the Swan Ball. “We were excited to be asked,” Cathy said, “and we wanted to follow in the footsteps of amazing auction chairs of the past.”

With such an impressive turnout and an extraordinary collection of auction items, these two ladies have certainly earned their place among the ranks of memorable and successful chairs.

Timeless beauty An enchanting evening at the Swan Ball Patrons Party

n the loveliest of spring evenings, Dudley White welcomed an intimate gathering of Cheekwood supporters to the terrace garden of her Belle Meade manse, Deerfield, for the Swan Ball Patrons Party. An army of cohosts—Jeanne and Bill Cammack, Ann and Bob Coleman, Alice and Henry Hooker, Frances and Buddy Jackson, and Betty and Jim Stadler—helped organize the blacktie fête and guaranteed that everything went off without a hitch.

Co-chairs Kathleen Estes and Barby White, looking resplendent in shades of blue, were in awe of the magnificent dinner tent on Dudley’s back lawn. Round tables were draped in pea green Bengaline silk and topped with white organdy overlays embroidered with ferns. The Tulip Tree’s Mark O’Bryan truly outdid himself with the stunning centerpieces of white hydrangeas, peonies, garden roses and Solomon’s seal in silver bowls. Silver Georgian candlesticks and mercury glass votive candle holders completed the elegant décor.

As guests arrived at Deerfield, they were immediately drawn toward the makeshift jewelry boutique from this year’s featured jeweler, Paolo Costagli. His stunning collection, which includes colored gemstones sourced from around the world, was an instant hit with the crowd. Jana Davis purchased a gorgeous pair of golden pearl drop earrings for the upcoming ball.

After attendees enjoyed cocktails, conversation and passed hors d’œuvres in the lush garden, they moved to the tent for dinner. A jazz trio provided soft tunes, adding to the ambiance of the evening. The spectacular three-course dinner from Dani Kates commenced with jumbo lump crab and tomatoes followed by noisettes of Australian lamb with mint jelly, wild mushroom risotto, fresh asparagus and roasted carrots, and meringue swans, lemon curd and raspberries for dessert.

It was an enchanting evening that perfectly hinted at the magic and sophistication awaiting this crowd at the 53rd annual Swan Ball.

he long and elegant tradition of the Swan Ball continued on into its 53rd year, this time in the very capable hands of co-chairs Kathleen Estes and Barby White. The Timeless Elegance theme was executed flawlessly in everything from the signature cocktail (Thymeless Lemon Martinis) to the striking décor, masterminded by New York event planner David Stark. Kathleen and Barby, a picture of timeless elegance themselves, were radiant with anticipation as the evening commenced.

As Pat Patrick tickled the ivories in the foyer, guests arrived at the Cheekwood mansion promptly at 7 p.m., slowly ascending the grand staircase in a dynamic display of colorful designer gowns and stunning jewels. In the drawing room, ladies fawned over the designs of Swan Ball jeweler Paolo Costagli while gents enjoyed libations (and later cigars) in the nearby Wisteria Garden.

The tent on Swan Lawn, as outfitted by David Stark and his dynamic team, was a magnificent sight to behold. The distinct cocktail reception area was a vision in greenery with tree-printed fabric covering the tent walls and oversized drum pendants with fern-patterned shades hanging overhead. The dining area was dreamily staged in hues of cream and soft pink with chocolate and hot pink accents scattered throughout. David brought the theme to life with an elaborate installation of clock components suspended from the ceiling of the tent, providing a beautiful and dramatic centerpiece for the glamorous fête.

When guests finally took their seats for dinner—it took quite an effort to get the garrulous crowd to stop mingling—Cheekwood president and CEO Jane MacLeod provided welcoming remarks. The Swan Award, posthumously honoring Ann and Monroe Carell for their longtime support for Cheekwood, was presented to their daughters, Kathryn Brown, Edie Johnson and Julie Stadler. Kristen Winston’s delectable three-course dinner satiated the crowd before the spirited live auction and the highly anticipated performance from Oscar winner, Jennifer Hudson. hile attendees at the Swan Ball took their seats for dinner, guests were just starting to arrive at Botanic Hall for the Late Party. Co-chairs Grace Clayton and Heidi Rose greeted partygoers as they arrived, ushering them into the cocktail tent—beautifully decorated in shades of hot pink and white by Hugh Howser of H3 Events and Mike Whitler and Mark Weber of Branches—located in the former greenhouse space next to Botanic Hall.

After a quick trip to the bar for a glass of bubbly, guests lounged on couches throughout the tent, especially many of the lovely moms-to-be we spotted in the crowd. Passed hors d’œuvres of open-faced tomato bites and gougères circulated the cocktail party as friends new and old visited. A silent auction offered specialty items and trips, and for the first time, the Late Party hosted its own jeweler, Lewis + Heard.

The party moved inside for dinner by chef Dani Kates of grilled peach salad, sliced beef tenderloin with béarnaise sauce and shrimp stuffed with crabmeat.

After dinner, a tantalizing dessert buffet of various tarts and Saigon cinnamon donuts gave a late-night sugar rush to attendees eager to head up to the Cheekwood mansion to dance the night away to The Atlanta Allstars!

While in England with their architect, the Cheeks purchased numerous antique furnishings and architectural elements to be placed in their new home. One of these elements was an iron stair railing from Queen Charlotte’s residence, Kew Palace, which was the home of many English monarchs. The iron stair railing was reportedly added during the residency of Queen Charlotte in the late 18th century.

The Cheeks also purchased a series of large mahogany doors that were once used in Grosvenor House, the London home of the Duke of Westminster. The Cheeks had them installed in the entryways of the transverse hallway, drawing room and dining room.

One of the boys Dylan McDermott opens up about films and philanthropy during a recent visit to Nashville for the Boys & Girls Clubs’ Great Futures Gala

How have you enjoyed your time in Nashville so far?

This is my first time here, and I really enjoy it. It’s because of the people though.

People are so nice. And I just love the whole hometown thing. People say ‘hello’ to you. They engage you.

How was your visit to the Boys & Girls Club today?

Incredible. It really touched my heart because I used to go [to the Boys Club] when I was a kid, and it kept me off the streets, and I got to play basketball. Three o’clock to six o’clock is the hardest time for kids because they’re off school and their parents aren’t home from work yet. And in that time is when all the bad stuff happens.

Are there any principles at work in your own life that came from the time you spent at the organization as a kid?

I’m not sure exactly how it all tied in. I know that what the Boys & Girls Clubs does, though, more than any organization for kids, is it does supply hope.

And most kids are aimless, they don’t have that focus and they don’t have that sense of community. And I think the Boys & Girls Clubs really give you that sense of community. And I think in community, people can rise up. I really do. And I think that’s what the Boys & Girls Clubs does so well.

What other causes are dear to your heart?

My mom has an organization called V-Day. She opened a safe house in Africa that I went to in the Congo and a girls’ safe house in Kenya. And she does a lot of work around the world and in New Orleans. And in that organization, I’ve seen how it works and how many women she’s helped around the world, so I try to be a part of that when I can.

Let’s switch gears a little bit and talk about your career. It’s impressive.

It’s spanned almost 30 years now.

Has it? [Laughs] Yeah. According to my research it has.

All right, this interview is over. [Laughs] Well, let’s talk about some roles.

What’s the role that you get recognized for the most?

I would say American Horror Story as of late. I think that a lot of people watch that show, and they get to watch it again and again and again because of Netflix. So I think that became a part of the culture.

What role has been the most fun to play?

Recently, I’d have to say The Campaign. Will Ferrell, Zach Galifianakis—I mean it doesn’t get any better than that. Jay Roach directing. You laugh all day. You cry.

You’re literally crying all day long ‘cause you’re laughing so hard.

What was the most challenging?

Well, certainly television. Seven seasons on The Practice. Hard. Really hard to be there every day when you’re carrying the show for seven seasons [ for] 15 to 16 hours a day, knowing all your lines, showing up. I would say that’s probably the hardest job I ever had because of the time commitment.

What about the role that got away?

The role that got away...Wow. There’s so many. There was one recently in We are the Millers where I was gonna play a Mexican drug lord. [Laughs] They just didn’t see it, I don’t know why.

No kidding. I don’t know what’s wrong with them.

Yeah. I don’t understand it.

What’s a type of role you’d love to play that you haven’t had a chance to?

I really would like to do more comedy.

You’re always so intense in everything.

It’s been dark for a long time now, so I want to lighten it up and do some comedy.

Is there an actor or actress that you’d really love to work with?

Oh, god. I just went back to the 40th anniversary for Saturday Night Live, and I just love that world. It’s just a fun world, the comedian world. Who would be the number one comedian? I think I’d do a movie with Jim Carrey. Maybe we could play brothers or something.

What role are you most proud of?

I would always say my first role, Hamburger Hill, because that was the beginning, and there’s nothing like that. It was an open call. I never did a movie before, [and] there I was in the Philippines with some great actors. I just think that role will always stay near and dear to me.

What’s next for you?

I have a movie coming out called Survivor with Milla Jovovich and Pierce Brosnan. It comes out in June. I don’t know exactly what I want to do yet. I’m trying to figure it out, what’s the next move for me. But that’s a luxury problem, you know?

Lastly, what inspires you?

You know, today I was inspired. When I walked in there to the Boys and Girls Club, I was inspired because I saw how hard life is. It’s so hard for so many people, but then you see these kids who have such spirit. One of them was running around and came up, and he was hugging me. And he didn’t know me from Adam. But he had that spirit. He had life. He had the spark. There’s no amount of money that can give that to someone. I’m surrounded by people who have tons of stuff, and they’re not happy. It was the human spirit. So that’s what inspires me more than anything else, and that’s what I’m gonna see here tonight. I’m gonna see the human spirit and how strong it is and how powerful it is and how it’s able to do anything.

eleste Harrison from Nashville met Mike Shaughnessy from Rye, New York, in the Hamptons in July of 2011. Celeste was sharing a house with friends for the summer and met Mike on her second weekend. He called her the following Monday in Manhattan, where they both worked, and they have been together ever since.

Two years later, Celeste was late in arriving at New York’s The Palm restaurant where they often gathered on Thursday nights for dinner with Mike’s family. Instead of finding the expected group, Celeste was ushered to a private, candle-lit dining room where Mike, dressed in a suit, was waiting with flowers, Champagne and a custom engagement ring. “It was such an amazing surprise,” said Celeste. “I was elated.”

They married in September 2014 at West End

United Methodist Church with a reception at Belle Meade Country Club. The bride wore a custom gown by Rivini, comprised of an Italian satin-faced silk organza bodice which flared out into cascading silk organza waves with hints of Fortuny pleated tulle. She carried a bouquet of white ranunculus, lisianthus, garden roses and double-flowered freesias designed by Mike Whitler of Branches.

Dessert Designs created the five-tiered cake with alternating flavors. The confection was finished with a Swiss dot design and a pale blush bow, similar to the sash on the bride’s gown. The groom’s cake was Mike’s favorite chocolate on chocolate cake from The Palm.

Since Celeste was in New York during much of the planning process, she relied heavily on event planner Elizabeth James and her parents, Celeste

Reed and Mark Harrison, to help with the wedding design and details.

The newlyweds made their getaway—amid a myriad of balloons and silver streamers—in a vintage baby blue Rolls Royce belonging to Celeste’s uncle, Jim Reed IV. They flew to Los Angeles for a night at The Beverly Hills Hotel before leaving for French Polynesia where they stayed for one week on the island of Mo’orea and another on Bora Bora.

They returned to Manhattan where Celeste manages operations and logistics for tarte cosmetics for their largest accounts such as Sephora. Mike is a municipal bond trader for FirstSouthwest.

She is a graduate of the University of Alabama.

Mike holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Duke University and a master’s in finance from Claremont McKenna College. sand y N elson

ara Morris met Jeremy Garner in 2011 while he was on a house-hunting trip in preparation to move to Nashville. A Harpeth Hall classmate of Sara’s, who attended the United States Naval Academy with Jeremy, made the introduction.

They became instant friends but didn’t begin dating for more than a year.

Jeremy proposed on a plot of land that is the site of their future home. Friends and family joined them later for a celebratory dinner. The couple married in October 2014 at Woodmont Christian Church with Rev. Clay Stauffer officiating. Sara wore a lace and tulle Rivini gown with a custom lace jacket and her sister’s cathedral-length veil. Jeremy was in uniform and incorporated components of a uniform belonging to Sara’s late grandfather. Bridesmaids wore dove gray tulle gowns by Jenny Yoo. Guests were

ushered by men in uniform, and the couple exited the church under the traditional Arch of Sabers.

The reception was held at the home of Sara’s parents. Please be Seated provided comfortable seating for the lawn and party tent. Jackson Durham Floral Event Design of Dallas, Texas, decorated the tent in a palette of whites and grays. A wreath of white flowers and lanterns wrapped in dusty miller were suspended from the tent ceiling.

Guests enjoyed a seated dinner from Monica Holmes of the Clean Plate Club. Highlights of the menu were butter lettuce salad, filet with Gruyère potatoes au gratin and a signature Moscow Mule served in a classic copper mug. Jay Qualls created an all-white wedding cake accented with glittered tiers, ruffled details and the couple’s monogram.

hood friends of the bride, coordinated the event.

Nashville duo Kohavi provided music for the cocktail hour, and guests danced to Memphis Soul Revue late into the night. The couple left the reception through a tunnel of sparklers and waved to guests from a white vintage Rolls Royce under the glow of fountain fireworks.

After a honeymoon at Blackberry Farm, the couple returned to Nashville. Sara is a nurse practitioner at DeLozier Cosmetic Surgery Center, and Jeremy is director of business development at Covenant Surgical Partners. Sara is a graduate of Georgetown University and Vanderbilt University.

here’s no better way to experience the Tennessee state motto “Agriculture and Commerce” than to visit a farmers market. Remember, you are perusing what’s growing right now from the land around us.

This calls for a different approach than dashing into the supermarket produce department for a head of iceberg lettuce. You’ve got to wander the stands, shop and think on your feet. Be okay with improvising, and have the courage to buy on instinct. Loosen the rules, and have fun combining what’s available—sort of like opening a mystery basket on Chopped.

Sorry, no tender, cool weather-loving baby lettuce with summer tomatoes. It’s time for the ever-changing Tennessee Ag Salad. For July, that means colorful, daring combinations of vegetables with summer fruits.

We like to follow the loose rule of five—three vegetables and two fruits with one cheese and/or herbs—mixed together as you like. It’s a more-vegetable-than-fruit combination casually scattered on a platter. No greens, and the proportions count. Too heavy on the fruit and you’ll end up with a weird fruit salad with a few vegetables in it.

Not cool.

For July’s Tennessee Ag Salad, we love the classic summer combo of tomato, cucumber and onion with cantaloupe and peaches or berries. It’s the cucumber that bridges the gap between the tomato and melon. (And it’s the onion that provides the needed savory umami.) Salty cheese and a fruity olive oil are a plus.

Our Tennessee Ag Salad is a no-recipe recipe. Combine the ingredients on a platter using our loose rule of five and see what happens. Simply dress it with a drizzle of olive oil and coarse sea salt. If you think it needs an acidic kick, add a squeeze of lemon or lime. Scatter an herb if you like. There are no hard rules.

A poetic miracle Not-so-plainly speaking

I

was only half listening to NPR as I stretched during phase one of the big Sunday afternoon workout—phase two is weights and phase three is shooting baskets if the weather permits, the elliptical trainer if it doesn’t—when I heard a random sentence coming out of the radio. It reminded me that we live in a world of parallel universes when the person on the radio said with absolute sincerity, “And I thought to myself, ‘It’s a once in a lifetime poetic miracle.’”

Who talks like that? If there were a contest for the least likely sentence to ever come out of my mouth, this would be a contender. Who does talk like that? In this case, an Arab–American composer named Mohammed Fairouz who has been described as “a postmillennial Schubert.” Whatever that means... (A waltz composer for kids?)

Fairouz is famous, as far as I can tell, for stir-frying the sounds of text—poems, political speeches and such—and classical music.

The poetic miracle he referred to is “In Memory of W.B. Yeats” by W.H. Auden. This particular poem is a miracle, says Fairouz, because Auden, after starting out very preWWII dark—“The day of his death was a dark cold day”—artfully gets all happy–faced by the end. “With the farming of a verse/Make a vineyard of the curse.” (From lemons, lemonade?) A poetic miracle? Let’s take Fairouz’s word for it.

The point here is anyone in the habit of using language like “a once in a lifetime poetic miracle” better be a genius. Language like that is not

the same as the functional jargon of the military and police or whatever you call that Latin gibberish doctors and scientists use. This is language that seems meant to set people apart socially. It’s an I’m-better-than-youare, part-of-something-you-aren’t, playground-ish put-down.

So how do we separate those who really are a gazillion times smarter than we are and have earned the right to call something “a once in a lifetime poetic miracle” from those who are faking it? Research.

Mohammed Fairouz seems to qualify as a genius having composed four symphonies and an opera before turning 30. So he apparently is better than we are and is part of something we aren’t. Yet he insists he really has no intent to put anyone down. Quite the opposite.

“The days of classical music are over,” said Fairouz. “The days of elitism in art are over. The days where people speak over people’s heads and then claim that they’re more clever and more special than the people who don’t understand what we’re saying are over. You have to speak to your audience.”

But what if your audience just doesn’t get it? I tried to like opera.

Really. Even went to the Met once.

Clearly I didn’t try hard enough.

While Fairouz’s heart may be in the right place, if he really is sincere about turning his back on elitism, he needs to watch that fancy language.

Of course we’ll allow him the occasional exception if he’s talking about, let’s say, Kris Kristofferson live at The Bluebird Cafe. Now that would qualify as a “poetic miracle.”

Giddy up!

Teaching our youth, “We’re all equal in the saddle”

T

ake a trip around Middle Tennessee and you’ll pass dozens of scenic horse farms along the way. But tucked inside Franklin, you’ll find a farm that’s not only picturesque but offers something incredibly impactful for youth in our community.

Saddle Up!, which was established 25 years ago, is a nonprofit with a mission to offer therapeutic activities with horses to children with disabilities. Saddle Up! provides year-round equine assisted programs that increase a child’s physical, social and communication skills.

“Basically, what we do is bring together special needs kids with horses, and we change lives,” explains executive director Cheryl Scutt. “We’ve seen that the horse can really accelerate progress with the kids, and it’s fun at the same time. In fact, I recently talked to a parent who said her child had a lot of therapies and really didn’t like going to them. But when she says, ‘Do you want to go out and be with your horse?’ it’s a whole different ball game.”

Their therapeutic riding program is the region’s oldest and largest program of its kind, exclusively serving youth with disabilities. The program is certified by the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International, which sets the standards for safety and quality.

More than half of the children enrolled at Saddle Up! are from Williamson County (roughly 30 percent hail from Davidson County), and the nonprofit’s staff and volunteers work regularly with youth with more than 50 types of disabilities including Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, spina bifida, visual and hearing loss, speech impairment and learning disabilities, among many others.

Riding horses allows children to develop muscular strength, coordination and balance, improving mobility while encouraging social interaction and communication skills. Many of these children have never been on a horse and have progressed from being unable to sit upright without assistance to riding independently.

Cheryl says that Saddle Up! provides services to 135 kids per week during the school year, and while that number decreases a bit in the summer months, it creates an imperative need for volunteers. In order to ensure safety, the recreational therapeutic riding program requires up to three volunteers per child.

“It’s really the most pressing volunteer need that we have, to have someone to lead the horse, and one or two people to do what’s called ‘side walking,’ in which you have a volunteer on each side of the horse if the rider needs it,” she

explains. “Some only need one side walker, and we have some participants who don’t need any.”

Cheryl says that this type of volunteering is best for individuals who can commit regularly, because it’s important to have consistency for both the children and the horses. Saddle Up! also offers an Equine Assisted Learning program where children can do activities with horses on the ground. During the school year, they partner with area institutions such as Benton Hall Academy, inviting children to participate in a variety of activities that teach social skills, life skills and communication skills. These programs require volunteer manpower as well, and the organization provides necessary training for individuals who want to help.

“We know that life is really busy, and not everyone can do that,” she says. “We also have needs for people who want to help with the farm or help with horses, people who can do projects around the farm or help us with events.”

One of those events is the upcoming Chukkers for Charity, which benefits both Saddle Up! and the Rochelle Center, held annually at Lee Ann and Orrin Ingram’s beautiful Riverview Farm “We need help getting all of that set up and running day-of, and then we’re back there at 8 a.m. the next morning taking everything down and cleaning everything up,” she says. “The Ingrams are so gracious to let us use their home.”

If you’ve attended Chukkers, you know how much fun it is (also, having celebrity players like Ralph Lauren model Ignacio “Nacho” Figueras and this year’s special guest, the equally easy-on-the-eyes Nic Roldan, doesn’t hurt), and it’s a great opportunity to raise money for two deserving nonprofits. But if you can’t make it out to the Ingrams’ farm in September, you can still help by visiting Saddle Up! and assisting with the many tasks necessary to keep the farm running.

“We have opportunities if you have a group—a civic group, a school group, a church group,” Cheryl says. “For example, HCA comes out here every year and does everything from working on fences to trimming bushes and mulching. It’s hard work, but it’s a fun place. Last year, our volunteers gave 17,488 hours of service.”

Our Nfocus team pitched in this year, painting a portion of the many fences along the Saddle Up! property. On a steamy summer day, it was definitely hard work but having our equine friends nearby was a constant reminder of the important service that Saddle Up! offers to our city’s young people.

The event— featuring a cocktail reception, silent auction, and a dance party to the tunes of Soul Incision with special guests Blue Miller and J onell Mosser—raised nearly $60,000 for the HHH mission to provide a home away from home for patients and caregivers seeking medical treatment in Nashville.

It was a wonderful day at the Iroqouis Steeplechase!!

he fundraiser luncheon for our partner school was about to begin, and our table at the front of the room had two empty chairs. It was a more casual event, held on a Friday for mostly business professionals, and I had tried to fill the table with colleagues who were involved at the school as volunteers and student advocates. A spare friend joined us just as lunch was served, but one chair remained conspicuously empty throughout the event.

An email pinged my inbox that afternoon with an explanation all too familiar. Michelle had a late start due to customer needs at work and had a hard time finding us after arriving 15 minutes late. Too embarrassed to come in with the event already underway, she turned around and headed back to the office. Been there.

How bad is it to walk in late? It’s not good form to be tardy for any occasion; however, I was recently reminded that it’s better to show up late than not at all.

Friday afternoons are blissful times at work. The office is quiet, my co-workers are golfing with clients, and sustained thought and work are possible. Whether it’s many small items ticked off the week’s to-do list or a single comprehensive project, it’s satisfying to leave when the work is actually complete. One Friday in May, Friends of Radnor Lake debuted their new Barbara J. Mapp Aviary Education Center with a reception for supporters from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. When would you have shown up? I intended to arrive around 4 or 4:30 p.m., which would’ve meant leaving work 20 to 30 minutes prior.

I glanced at the clock at 2:40 p.m.— plenty of time. I could tick off a half

dozen small jobs before needing to leave. What a productive afternoon it became! Projects large and small were easily dispensed. With each completion, the next task beckoned irresistibly, and I followed like Gretel after bread crumbs.

Twenty minutes later, I swear, I had slipped through the space-time continuum—it was almost 5:30! I was in danger of missing the reception altogether! My desk looked a lot better to my eyes, but the casual observer might assume an insane person had labored there. It didn’t matter.

This was a drop-everything situation.

I arrived at the assigned church parking lot around 5:45 p.m. Not bad, but a shuttle was involved and I was its lone passenger. We slowly began ascending a narrow, winding road (I took some deep, cleansing breaths) and arrived at 5:57 p.m. Three minutes before closing! Mortifying.

You would have thought we had all afternoon. Friends of Radnor Lake board members offered water or wine, a gracious buffet and a personal tour of the expansive homes for rehabilitating owls and eagles— along with smiles and welcoming hugs. We covered a lot of ground in 180 seconds. The aviary was breathtaking—and not just because I was in a rush! The last shuttle began preparing for its descent moments after 6 p.m. I resolved to come back to see the exhibit in its entirety as well as the wild bird demonstration with one of the park rangers.

It took only a few minutes to show their appreciation, and the Friends of Radnor Lake leaders did it with grace.

Furthermore, there really is such a thing as better late than never.

Family tradition 1972

T

he Swan Ball’s rich history always lends a sense of nostalgia, but this year’s soirée held a special significance for one its co-chairs.

Kathleen Estes had the honor of holding the position 43 years after her mother, Frances Jackson, chaired in 1972. Over the years, the chairmen may change, along with their chosen themes, but the elegance of the evening and the dynamic roster of entertainment remain constant. In 1972, county music legend Johnny Cash took the stage, and we’re still reeling from this year’s performance by Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson. One thing is clear: the Swan Ball continues to be in good hands and voices—and that’s something we expect never to change.
