FROM DARKNESS TO SIGHT CHRONICLES THE REMARKABLE LIFE JOURNEY OF DR. MING WANG, A WORLD-RENOWNED LASER EYE SURGEON AND PHILANTHROPIST.
A
s a teenager, Ming fought valiantly to escape one of history’s darkest eras—China’s Cultural Revolution—during which millions of innocent youth were deported to remote areas to face a life sentence of poverty and hard labor. Through his own tenacity and his parents’ tireless efforts to provide a chance of freedom for their son, Ming eventually made his way to America with $50 in his pocket and an American dream in his heart, where against all odds he would earn a PhD in laser physics and graduate magna cum laude with the highest honors from Harvard Medical School and MIT. He embraced his Christian faith and tackled one of the most important questions of our time— Are faith and science friends or foes?— which led to his invention of a breakthrough biotechnology to restore sight. To date, Dr. Wang has performed over 55,000 eye procedures and has treated patients from nearly every state in the U.S. and from over 55 countries worldwide. He is considered the “doctor’s doctor,” as he has operated on over 4,000 physicians. Dr. Wang has published 8 textbooks and a paper in the world-renowned journal Nature, holds several U.S. patents and performed the world’s first laser artificial cornea implantation. He is the recipient of the Honor Award from American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Lifetime
Achievement Award from American Chinese Physician Association. Dr. Wang is currently the only surgeon in the state who performs 3D LASIK (18+), 3D Laser Kamra (45+), 3D Forever Young Lens Surgery (50+) and 3D Laser Cataract Surgery (60+). Dr. Wang established a nonprofit foundation which provides sight restoration surgeries for indigent patients who otherwise would never have the opportunity to receive them free-of-charge. This is a story of one man’s inspirational journey, of turning fear, poverty, persecution and prejudice into healing and love for others. It demonstrates how focus, determination, humility and profound faith can inspire a life that, in turn, impacts that of countless others.

nswer this honestly : does anyone from the South actually like the summer? I hail from northern Ohio where the winters are brutal, but the summers are mild. I spent a recent weekend in my hometown and didn’t feel like I was suffocating once. It was a nice break from Nashville’s stifling temperatures of late. Whether you grew up in the area or are a transplant yourself, we’ve got tips to help you survive the dog days of summer. From refreshing recipes to fun activities (both indoors and out), you’ll be fully equipped to endure — and even enjoy — the warmer days ahead. (And your heart will melt when you see the
adorable models in our photo shoot!) Flip to page 75 to check them out. Of course, this wouldn’t be the July issue of Nfocus without Swan Ball coverage galore. We’ve got stunning photos that you don’t want to miss — the parties, the fashions, the jewels, the dancing and more. Read about the Auction Party (page 54), the Patrons Party (page 56) and the main event (page 61). And don’t forget that all of the gorgeous photos are available for purchase at nfocusnashville.com. Swan Ball wasn’t the only event on our calendar this month. We’ve got coverage of Broadway Brunch, Music Country Grand Prix, Generous Helpings and more. Read on and stay cool! BY NaNcY FlOYD

ike many Nashvillians, Toby Leonard grew up watching movies at the Belcourt. Little did he know that he would return to the theater nearly two decades later to help bring it back to life. When it looked like the theater would close in the late ’90s, Toby’s childhood friend Julia Sutherland led the charge to save it with the Belcourt YES! campaign. Upon its reopening in 2000, she brought Toby in to manage the theater at night. Over the next few years, his role evolved, and in 2004, he became the director of programming. Since his arrival, Toby has increased The Belcourt’s yearly programming from 100 films to more than 300. He maintains a daily schedule of new releases as well as regular showings of the repertory series, classics, kids’ shows and midnight movies. He also manages all special events. If something, or someone, is coming to the Belcourt, Toby’s on it. He maintains a national presence in the cinema world to continually bring in great films and sits on the leadership committee of the Art House
Convergence, which hosts a yearly conference for like-minded cinemas. He’s also been involved in theatrical distribution, which allows him to see his job from the other side of the table. The Belcourt, now almost 100, is currently undergoing a much-needed multi-million-dollar renovation. It includes everything from handicapaccessible restrooms to a larger lobby and the addition of a third screen. The plans remain respectful to the history of the theater while accommodating for its continued growth. When asked how the renovation will affect the Nashville community, Toby humbly says, “Ideally we’ll be continuing the same path that brought us to this point, which is to continue exhibiting works of relevance to the very city that enabled its continued existence. We just want to show good films and to be a place that filmgoers can feel good taking a chance on.” The Belcourt will reopen July 22 and is still accepting donations. Visit belcourt.org for more information on how to contribute to the continued success of this Nashville gem.

Focused on the Future When Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center Ambassadors gathered at Orrin Ingram’s house for An Evening on the Farm, they had more than the scenic Harpeth River and pastures in sight. This group of young philanthropists is focused on a future without cancer. Since 2009, VICC ambassadors have raised more than $600,000 to support discovery grants, which, in turn, have led to $12 million in follow-on funding. Christine Lovly explained how such seed funding allowed her to compete successfully for additional grants to aid her research on targeted therapies for lung cancer patients. VICC ambassadors know that cancer touches everyone. They also know they can make a difference in the battle against the disease by expanding the army. The ambassadors’ personal invitations to the event were filled with heartfelt stories of health and healing, drawing an ardent crowd including Jenna and Andrew Nelson, Kelly and Anoosh Bahiraei, Chuck Steiner, Kristin Watson, David Fox, Stephanie Gilboy and John Cate, Ruth Franklin, Heather Galloway, Lindsay and Eddie Sherwood, Courtney Jenrath, Dawn Beaulieu, Sujana Reddy, Beth and Brad Jones, Sarah and Martin Akin, Allison and Justin Balko, Stacey and Sonny Clark, Nicole Mead, Minnette and Clay Jackson, Shannon Lapsley and Javid Moslehi. Orrin’s son Hank Ingram hosted the gathering — and even joined The Craig Duncan Band on the guitar — carrying on the family tradition of clobbering cancer with relentless optimism, generosity and hospitality.

As guests arrived to Alive Hospice for their annual Butterfly Release, the gardens were already full of monarch butterflies from the first round of releases that had happened earlier that morning. A sunny spring day — it miraculously never rains at this event — provided the perfect backdrop for this meaningful celebration to honor the memory of lost loved ones. After a brief word of welcome from the Alive Hospice staff, hundreds of

butterflies were released, much to the delight of the many children in attendance who chased the orange and black creatures throughout the grounds. Many of the participants of this event had loved ones who passed away in Alive Hospice’s care, but others simply partake in the festivities to support the organization and honor the lives of those lost. Our Nfocus and Nashville Scene family gathered at the event to honor the life of Jim Ridley, the Scene’s former editor who passed away in early April. Joining with Jim’s wife, Alicia Adkerson, and kids, Jamie and Kat, we watched our butterflies take flight alongside hundreds of others. In the end, more than 500 butterflies were released at the event, carrying on the memories of those we’ve loved and lost and supporting Alive’s mission to provide loving care to terminal patients and their families.
Splish, Splash It was the perfect spring afternoon for the second Boots & Bubbles, a fundraiser to benefit Nashville Dolphins, the organization that provides aquatics programs for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Julia and John Morris opened up their home — more accurately their lushly landscaped backyard — for a crawfish boil and music from Soul Incision. To wash down the mudbugs, there was plenty of cold beer, and bartenders were shaking up “Dolphi-

In the all-ages group were Dolphins founders Beth Scruggs and Dotty Sutter as well as Leigh and Warren Johnson, Sherry and Dudley West, Nancy and Skipper Phipps, Amy and Kenneth Adams, Argie and Matt Campbell, Shelley and Chad Ramsey and a host of chubby-cheeked toddlers. kind pieces from this year’s Swan Ball jeweler, Lillian H. Ostergard. They had a peek at — and an opportunity to try on — a sampling in March when Derek Ostergard came to the Unveiling Party. This time he brought many more treasures and his equally charming wife, Lillian. Cases sparkled with the customdesigned pieces that combine timeless elegance with rich, sophisticated colors and touches of humor. Their necklace designed and made exclusively for this year’s auction was on prominent view in the center of the room. Women were irresistibly drawn to the stunning piece created from spheres of optically pure rock crystals enhanced with diamonds and 18-karat yellow gold cages, joined by platinum links. Co-chairs Elizabeth Akers and Nan Cox modeled elegant drop earrings, and everyone, including cohostess Phyllis Fridrich, wanted to try on at least one adornment. The only thing that diverted the ladies’ attention from the baubles was the dining room table laden with light bites including chicken salad, egg salad and pimento cheese sandwiches. Clare Armistead, Peggy Joyce, Joanne Hayes, Argie Oman, Sally Henderson, Cassie Winsett, Sandra Lipman, Jane MacLeod and Betty Jane Barringer were but a few now belonging to the ranks of jewelry lovers around the world who admire the Ostergards’ classic pieces.
Summertime Soirée There’s no better place to spend a Friday night than at Cheekwood’s Botanic Hall for its annual summertime soirée, Highballs and Hydrangeas. For the 11th annual event, women arrived in airy sundresses and wedges, and men traded in their sport coats and ties for polo shirts and slacks. As the summer heat receded, the guests wandered out to the terrace with friends and loved ones. While some couples watched as the evening sun descended over the fountains and plants that decorated Cheekwood’s gardens below, others mingled on couches sipping cocktails and wine. Back inside, the lively hall hummed with conversation and a performance from Band 24/7. Lining the walls of the hall were a variety of hors d’œuvres offered by the Nashville Originals including Noshville, Blue Moon Waterfront Grille, Puckett’s, the Pineapple Room, Copper Kettle, Watermark, Wild Iris, Yellow Porch, Provence and Green Hills Grille. Among the many guests we saw that evening were Debbie Layman, Katie Nelson, K.T. Harrison, Theresa Wall, Owen Joyner, Carrie and Kent Wilson, Ashley and Jonathan Jeans, Kate and Kelly Young, Julian Rodgers and Lisa Rush.

Puckett’s toasty fried mac and cheese, the Pineapple Room’s savory hamburger sliders, Yellow Porch’s North American spiced meatballs, Green Hills Grille’s pork tacos and Provence’s sweet eclairs.
We think the best way to liven up a party is with a little help from the furry critters at the Nashville Zoo. Sylvia Roberts opened the doors of her Belle Meade home to guests for the Sunset Safari Kick-off. As to be expected at any zoo event, the crowd included a couple special guests — a binturong and a silvery-cheeked hornbill.
While sipping on wine and munching on hors d’œuvres, the guests’ attention fell on board chair Julie Walker as she shared about the exciting things happening at the zoo, including the fact that attendance has grown by 1,000 percent since moving to the Grassmere location in 1997. The new Entry Village, with a larger ticket booth and gift shop, was finished just in time for summer crowds. Four new exhibits are set to open in the next nine months including ones featuring spider monkeys, white rhinos and Andean bears — plus an expanded tiger exhibit. Sunset Safari co-chairs Cile Scanlan, Lisa Henderson and Melanie Tigrett rallied the crowd to thank the
If you want to chart the growth of Nashville’s restaurant community from year to year, check out Yum!East in East Pavilion. The tasting event gets more fun every summer as evermore East Nashville restaurants and food artisans gather to support Fannie Battle Day Home, Middle Tennessee’s oldest childcare program, which provides affordable early childhood education for working families in the neighborhood. Among exquisite bites of barbecue, sushi, ceviche, ice cream, cake pops, spicy popcorn, quinoa cookies and bread pudding, we even sampled two kinds of octopus — one served as a cold seafood salad, another sculpted entirely from chocolate by Chocolate F/X in the nearby Shoppes on Fatherland. Little Harpeth Brewing Co. and Woodland Wine Merchant kept beer and wine flowing into Yum!East pint glasses, the signature souvenir of the event. Gazpacho hit the spot on a summer night, and we found two gorgeous versions by Margot Café, made with peaches and spiced peanuts, and Holland House, with cucumber, dill and peanut brittle. We can’t wait to find out what’s on the menu next year. A cheerful rite of summer, a brass band marched through the crowd, pumping out “When the Saints Go Marching In” and weaving through a record-sized crowd that included George Armistead, Laura and Dave Braam, Noni Nielsen, Renee Thompson, Renée Chevalier, Marguerite Orndorff, Meggin and Andy Grobmyer, Libby and Fred Cothren, Joe Burchfield, Heath Henley, Mary and Will Motley, Mike Dietrich, Mike Law, Shana Fonnesbeck, Ben Sellers, Kat Cloud, Harold Shannon, Costin Shamble, Bill Evans, Elizabeth Geist, Evelyn Hale and Jay Levin.
So fine was the morning except for a streak of wind here and there that the sea and sky looked all one fabric, as if sails were stuck high up in the sky, or the clouds had dropped down into the sea. VIRGINIA WOOLF, “TO THE LIGHTHOUSE”

The Patrons Party, typically located in the Croft Center, will be moved further into the park so patrons will have access to more restaurants on their way to the party. Among the partygoers, we saw Laurie Eskind, Martha Ivester, Lydia and George Armistead, and Emily and Patrick Walsh.

PLASTIC SURGERY OF THE NOSE, FACE & BODY
If you’ve driven past 336 White Bridge Pike recently, you probably couldn’t help but notice the crisp, clean grey house with bright green flower boxes where a funky blue house once stood. Martha Stamps just opened Bergamot Market, making her — and our — dream come true. Inside you will find Martha amid her freshly prepared foods in a cozy setting with several booths and tables, plus a comfortable sofa and chairs perfect for relaxing over a cup of tea. Fond memories of drinking Earl Grey tea with her mom inspired Martha to name her charming spot after the fragrant citrus fruit. Just as bergamot takes tea to the next level, this CIA graduate makes food that is simple, well thought out and with a special touch that makes every dish the best it can be. Doors open at 9 a.m. for breakfast, with coffee, espresso and, of course, hot tea to enjoy with crustless quiche or biscuits with country ham. Classic photo by ERIC ENGLAND chicken- or egg-salad sandwiches are always available, but the tasty bánh mì and the Bombay avocado press sandwiches will soon be go-to favorites. Any time of day is right for the extremely popular — as well as vegan and gluten-free — trail-mix cookies. Daily specials vary and feature options like healthy baked ziti with prosciutto, mushrooms and feta accompanied by kale salad or classic Southern fried chicken with coleslaw and roasted potatoes. Martha plans to extend hours in the near future, giving more of us the opportunity to pick up a great quart of soup on the way home. Call ahead to order items at 615-920-5355, and sign up for emails to learn about specials and new developments by visiting bergamotmarket.com.

COMMITTED TO THE FINEST RESULTS
The masterminds behind Puckett’s have a sweet new project in the works with Hattie Jane’s Creamery in downtown Columbia. Opening this month, Hattie Jane’s is an artisan ice-cream shop inspired by the Marshall family’s love for the frozen dessert. Just as Puckett’s brings people together over Southern fare and live music, visionary Claire Marshall Crowell, chief operating officer of A. Marshall Family Foods Inc., hopes Hattie Jane’s will become a place where families and friends come to spend time together. And what better way to bond than over a couple scoops? The ice cream is made in small batches and created from authentic ingredients free of fillers and additives. The creamery’s menu will offer a small selection of up to eight flavors with creative and unique options like peach cobbler. Homemade waffle cones, freshly baked cookies for ice-cream sandwiches, and hot fudge and caramel syrups make the options simply irresistible — and the perfect summer treat to beat the heat. For a sneak peek of what’s to come, limited options are already available on the Homestead Manor menu. If you can’t make it to Thompson’s Station or Columbia to try Hattie Jane’s, Puckett’s will offer an in-house selection as well as pints to take home. Plus, a second location for the creamery is in the works, with plans to open in the late fall, and expansion opportunities for Davidson and Williamson counties are already being explored. For updates on Hattie Jane’s, visit hattiejanescreamery.com, and for a taste of their treats, try one of the recipes in our Dog Days of Summer feature on page 75. photo CouRtEsy of hAttIE JANE’s

Take a Bow Nashville Rep’s Broadway Brunch garners rave reviews
N Co-chairs Rob Turner and Jay Jones

ashville Rep staged a stellar production with its debut of Broadway Brunch. City Winery was the perfect spot to hold the celebration of live theater not only because of the great stage but also because it was large enough to hold the crowd. More than 250 guys and dolls imbibed mimosas and bloody marys while keeping close watch over coveted items at the silent auction. As a classic brunch of quiche, potato hash and salad was served, they drifted toward their seats. Co-chairs Jay Jones and Rob Turner could barely contain their excitement over the success of the inaugural event as they stood on stage and raised their flutes in a toast to Nashville Rep, its 30-year history and a long, successful future. Producing artistic director René Copeland echoed their enthusiastic thanks before introducing Megan Barry. After a rousing standing ovation, Megan, a former Rep board member and the honorary chair, saluted the company and its remarkable contributions to our city and its artists, audiences and students. In a warm tribute, Rep actor Chip Arnold and René presented Martha Ingram with the Applause Award for her boundless passion and the support she has given to numerous arts organizations and Nashville Rep since co-founding it in 1975. The performance, a rendition of Broadway tunes by company actors, included numbers from Chicago, Sweeney Todd and Big River. Auctioneer and emcee Troy Morris led a quick game of Broadway Trivia, in which knowledgeable theater buffs won tickets to an upcoming performance and a Nashville Rep mug, before holding a live auction that included a week in the Virgin Islands. After this last act, audience members agreed that the matinee was a smash hit. With a successful premiere of Broadway Brunch, it is certain that Nashville Rep will stage encore performances of this fun fundraising event. Bravo! by Holly Hoffman photographs by Michael W. Bunch

Out of Hibernation A Grand Day on May Day for NCT
M
ay Day proved to be a Grand Day for the Nashville Children’s Theatre this year. The 17th annual benefit, held both inside and out, was threatened by the prediction of rain, but the clouds dissipated, and the afternoon proved to be perfect for both young and old to enjoy leapfrog and hopscotch, a petting zoo, a gardening station, kite flying, a bounce house and a myriad of other activities. The theme was A Year With Frog and Toad, a musical currently at NCT based on the books by Arnold Lobel about the power of friendship. Patrons of Grand Day enjoyed the presentation after a swamp-style feast of fruit salad (displayed in a watermelon carved into the shape of a frog), chicken and sausage gumbo with rice, frogs-on-a-log Swiss cake roll-ups and fish-in-a-pond jello shots. Long family-style tables were covered in earthy olive cloths with burlap runners. Spring flowers and cattails adorned the tables, and frog masks and bulging frog-eye headbands were tossed about for all to wear. An auction of inspirational, hand-crafted “dragon” eggs caused quite a buzz as guests admired the artistic talents of Kristin Llamas, Randi Green and Gary Hoff, just to name a few. Mini bundt cakes and green “snail” cookies were the delicious party favors handed to guests as they meandered to seasonally themed rooms and the summer lawn for all sorts of fun crafts and games. Proceeds from Grand Day, which was founded by the late Scot Copeland, go directly to support NCT’s Arts Access programs, and with several hundred attendees, there was no doubt he would have been pleased at this year’s sold-out event. As the program stated so succinctly, “this was a celebration worth coming out of hibernation for!”

Going for Gold Tracie and Scott Hamilton shine bright at Inspire Nashville Bob Goff, Stephanie Ingram
I
t was “a gathering for underdogs and second chances.” At least that’s how Onsite CEO Miles Adcox described Inspire Nashville, the annual fundraiser for Possibilities, which provides scholarships to those seeking Onsite’s therapeutic services. But for the hundreds of guests at Marathon Music Works, the evening was also about empowerment, encouragement and, yes, inspiration. A slew of celebrity friends were present to lend their support to the organization and show some love to honorees Tracie and Scott Hamilton. Everyone felt like a star when they arrived, thanks to their walk on the red carpet, which has become a staple at this event as a way to honor every guest in attendance. “It’s not because of what you do but because of who you are,” Miles said. Melinda Doolittle got the night started with a performance of “Hallelujah” before dedicating her second “sassy song” — Peggy Lee’s “I’m a Woman” — to Tracie. Melinda joked, “Scott is my hero for winning the gold medal, but Tracie is my true hero because she holds it down.” Kimberly Williams-Paisley, sans husband Brad, shared some heartfelt words about what an inspiration the couple has been over the years. Touching on everything from their first meeting (and how badly she and Brad hoped they wouldn’t screw it up) to Scott’s battle with cancer, she emphasized what true friends and mentors Tracie and Scott have been, even crediting them for her and Brad’s decision to have kids. After a performance from country artist Emily West, bestselling author Bob Goff lit up the room with his endless energy and exuberance, speaking with passion about Onsite’s programs and the generous spirits of the Hamiltons. “You see people for who they’re becoming,” he said, addressing the couple and thanking them for the personal influence they’ve had on his life. A selection of poignant and hilarious video messages from the couple’s many friends, including Kevin Nealon, William Shatner and Monty Python’s own Eric Idle, had the crowd in laughter and tears. But there was one more surprise in this already star-studded affair when yet another luminary took the stage. Sheryl Crow ended the festivities on a high note, inspiring all to give — and live — generously.

Serving Size Culinary delights at Second Harvest’s Generous Helpings
A
s Nashville’s culinary scene continues to explode at rapid-fire pace, it’s impossible to keep up with all the new restaurant openings. With hot spots popping up all across town on a weekly basis, who can find the time to try them all? That’s why we love events like Second Harvest’s Generous Helpings, which assembles the hottest new restaurants under one roof. This year’s roof was City Winery’s, a change from the event’s usual locale of the Nashville Farmers’ Market. The nonprofit, which exists to fight hunger in Middle Tennessee, brought together 25 local eateries for the fundraiser that benefits Middle Tennessee’s Table, Second Harvest’s grocery rescue program. Jaynee Day, Second Harvest’s president and CEO, offered a quick word of welcome and thanks to Kroger (who has been the presenting sponsor of this event for 10 years) and to the enthusiastic crowd. Guests were then left to explore booths from Nashville newbies like Butcher & Bee and Salt & Vine and classics including Provence and Amerigo. The restaurants served up bite-sized samples of menu favorites as well as new creations, creating quite a smorgasbord of options for partygoers that encompassed everything from snapper ceviche with avocado mousse, courtesy of Bajo Sexto, to lamb meatballs from Caffe Nonna. The Southern Steak & Oyster stepped outside the box with apple cider donuts topped with pork shoulder and pickled veggies, the perfect blend of sweet and savory that kept guests coming back for more. Upstairs, the Grilled Cheeserie’s playful spin on chicken and waffles — pickled ramps, crispy chicken skin, hot honey and buttermilk cheese sauce on rosemary waffle toast — was a pleasant surprise and had everyone hoping it might show up on the menu of their new brick-and-mortar coming to Hillsboro Village. Thanks to a silent auction, which offered restaurant gift card packages by neighborhood, guests could continue their epicurean tours of Nashville long after the night was through, and Second Harvest could continue their tireless work to solve hunger issues throughout the area.

Flights of Fashion O’More College of Design Fashion Show lands in new venue
F
rom the moment David Rosen arrived as president of O’More College of Design, he has been shaking things up — and we mean that in the best possible way. His latest stroke of genius was to move the school’s annual fashion show from its downtown Franklin campus to the John C. Tune Airport. He also changed it to Thursday evening ( from the usual Friday), averting many conflicts during the always-busy weekend. On a mild May evening, over 500 friends and family members filled an enormous airplane hangar, confirming that the switch was a great decision. Co-chairs Bobbi Hemmen and Elizabeth Onks worked with other O’More alums as the first-ever committee to plan every detail for the 18th annual event. At the inaugural VIP reception, alums, students, models and fans of fashion stopped to admire the collections from two seniors before mingling over cocktails and finger food from O’More’s official caterer, Cool Cafe. Members of the Honorary Committee — all fashion industry professionals — circulated among guests and expressed excitement about judging the student collections. Seats around the U-shaped runway filled quickly before emcee Jaci Velasquez opened the show. The presentation itself featured well-designed, well-made and beautiful collections from 16 juniors and seniors. Their lines ranged from children’s clothes to plus-size designs to sleek women’s wear. The evening concluded with the Honorary Committee presenting senior Stephanie Caporella with the Distinguished Designer Award and junior Sara Hinkle with the Design Achievement Award. Both young women demonstrated exceptional talent in the creation of their business plans and runway presentations. The annual fashion show celebrates months of work by current students. As Van Tucker earlier stated, “These students represent the future of our fashion industry — and our future looks bright.” It also looks bright for students because proceeds from the successful evening go to fund scholarships at the nationally ranked O’More College of Design.

Strong Connections Community Foundation presents Francis S. Guess Bridge to Equality Fund Luncheon Eric Rechter, Chris Rechter, Carol and Norm Pictor
I
t’s been less than a year since we lost esteemed civic leader Francis Guess, and in his memory, The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee created the Francis S. Guess Bridge to Equality Fund. The goal is to enhance dialogue, align resources and build strategic partnerships by uniting the community to encourage change that will result in equality across Nashville and Middle Tennessee. The inaugural luncheon, hosted by and held at the Music City Center, served to honor the many ways Francis brought our community together and recognize the work of his great friend Ben Rechter with the first Bridge to Equality Award. Friends and family of Francis and Ben quickly filled the lobby, and when the doors to the Davidson Ballroom opened, the transcendent sounds of the Fisk Jubilee Singers drew the crowd in. MCC board chair Charles Starks welcomed attendees before making a special presentation. The room burst into applause when Rich Riebeling joined Charles onstage to present Francis’ daughter, Maria Guess, with a copy of the sign at the 28th/31st Avenue Connector, recently renamed in her father’s honor. Vicki Yates, a dear friend to Francis, recounted the many ways we give and receive access to equality before welcoming back the Fisk Jubilee Singers. The high point of the lunch was the presentation of the award to Ben, whose leadership has broken down walls and built bridges in order to help others achieve equality. Incoming CFMT board chair Kerry Graham presented him with a miniature multi-colored stained glass bridge by Nashville artist Sam Simms, which represented the array of beliefs and strengths alive in our community. Our community is stronger and richer because of Francis Guess, and the Bridge to Equality Fund will continue his efforts. By following Vicki’s closing directive to “go forth from this place to build bridges,” we will honor his memory every day.

s Nashville’s eponymous TV show prepared to end its run on ABC, its stars were gathered together at the Grand Ole Opry to perform at A Little Night of Music to raise funds for the PENCIL Foundation. With the show’s future uncertain, it was a fitting conclusion to the four-year run for stars Chip Esten, Maisy Stella, Lennon Stella and Chris Carmack to not only be performing on the iconic stage but to be giving back to the community, something the cast has made a habit of doing since arriving in Music City in 2012. The evening started with a cocktail supper and hefty silent auction in the Opry’s famed Studio A. VIPs enjoyed a backstage meet-and-greet with the stars in the Opry’s kitschy dressing rooms before the show. One of the highlights of this event since switching venues last year is the rare opportunity guests have to watch a show on the Opry stage from the Opry stage. Attendees fill chairs and couches lining the stage while the performers sing with the empty auditorium to their backs. This year, Chip, Chris, Lennon and Maisy performed in the round, singing a mix of original songs, hits from the show and popular covers. “Honestly, I can’t think of a better way to spend these final minutes before the finale,” Chip said between songs. It was a sentiment shared by the rest of the cast and the fans in the audience. The concert ended just minutes before the finale, but PENCIL Foundation had one more trick up its sleeve. The cast and the crowd returned to Studio A for a viewing party of the show’s final episode. Even Gunnar and Layla — Sam Palladio and Aubrey Peeples, respectively — showed up to watch the show and bid adieu. Fortunately, we don’t need to say goodbye just yet. The show will be returning for a fifth season on CMT, which means our favorite characters will remain fixtures on our televisions and in our social scene. by Nancy Floyd photographs by Daniel Meigs

Laughter and Love Gilda’s Club Nashville bids a fond farewell to Sandy Towers
G
ilda’s Club Dinner Party & Comedy Night is known for its laughs, but guests were prepared for much more this year. The evening was in honor of founder and CEO Sandy Towers, who was retiring after 18 years of service. “I’m planning my own going away — laughter and celebration will ensue. I so hope you are able to join us!” Sandy said in the nonprofit newsletter leading up to the event. “By the way, it’s my party, and I’ll cry if I want to,” Sandy continued, suggesting all BYOK (bring your own Kleenex). The cocktail hour was overflowing with warmth as the impressive list of attendees — many involved since the beginning — shared their favorite Sandy story. In the throng were founders and past board chairs, survivors and their families, all fans of the honoree. Guests anticipated a poignant evening, so little encouragement was needed for them to head for the buffet. Emcee Ronna Rubin — who needs her own comedy career — recounted the story of Sandy and her best friend Kristy Olsen, who passed away from cancer at 31, spurring Sandy’s founding our Gilda’s Club chapter in August 1998. The room stood and cheered after Ronna recognized nine members of Kristy’s family who came to Nashville as a surprise for Sandy. A touching video of tributes from SNL’s Paul Shaffer, Michael Radner (Gilda’s brother) and a host of others preceded Sandy’s tearful acceptance of the Nancy Saturn Award of Inspiration. (Anyone who cried with her could reach for tissues thoughtfully placed at each seat.) Justin Levenson shared his story of life since being diagnosed with brain cancer at 35, reinforcing why the organization is so important to our community. After Henry Cho’s stand-up routine, guests headed home grateful for Sandy’s years of service and excited about what her future holds.

Party Animals Storms can’t stop Brew at the Zoo
W
hen it comes to weather, the Nashville Zoo hasn’t had the best luck with their fundraisers this year. Last fall, Sunset Safari was hit with thunderstorms, and the recent Brew at the Zoo didn’t fare much better. As a line of cars filled the parking lot, ominous dark clouds began filling the sky, but that couldn’t deter this crowd of beer lovers and zoo supporters. The zoo’s stunning new Entry Village — which just opened this spring — created the illusion of stepping into Jurassic Park with its giant torches and dense vegetation. Fortunately, it limited the long lines typically found at this event and helped the crowd squeeze into the park quickly. Within a half hour, the skies opened, and a torrential downpour drenched the crowd, but with over 60 craft breweries on site, no one seemed to mind one bit. Guests donned ponchos, opened umbrellas, hid under tents, or — in many cases — braved the rain in order to sample the 100-plus beers that were on tap throughout the property, including options from local faves Black Abbey, Yazoo, Turtle Anarchy, Mantra and Little Harpeth. Yee-Haw, a brand new brewery in Johnson City, was making their debut, much to the delight of Tennessee craft beer enthusiasts. VIPs were feeling particularly happy with their tickets, thanks to an indoor VIP Lounge and tented Conservation Lounge. Both offered additional beverages, a dry place to enjoy them and, in the case of the VIP Lounge, snacks to pair with them. A line of food trucks provided dining options for the rest of the crowd and a bit of sustenance to continue the beer tour. The rain kept most of the zoo animals from being on display, but with this much beer on tap, the party got a little wild just the same.

One Hoof Beat at a Time Saddle Up! celebrates 25 years at Music Country Grand Prix Co-chairs Sarah Ingram and Jennifer Pennington
T
he Music Country Grand Prix, the largest single fundraiser benefiting Saddle Up!, went off without a hitch and right on time despite a weekend of thunderstorms. Not to be deterred, interminable co-chairs Jennifer Pennington and Sarah Ingram, along with tireless volunteers such as Katie Radel and Knox Brewer, moved the patron tent to higher ground and continued to adorn the sold-out tables in red begonias and pink and yellow Gerber daisies as if moving a tent large enough to hold 500 guests was no big deal at all. The irony of the move was that it had been preceded by an even bigger move this year to a grassy field in the middle of Sissie Anderton’s picturesque Brownland Farm. This event only continues to grow, so the decision was made to relocate to a larger location with improved footing and to have comfortable, air-conditioned Mercedes vans shuttle guests back and forth. All attendees — whether patrons, general admission or cabana supporters — seemed to enjoy the change. Some even choose to walk the distance in the bucolic surroundings. Wild Iris and Puckett’s provided the scrumptious summer supper, and local artist Joan Jannaman donated an extraordinary painting of last year’s MCGP winner to the auction. The little ones enjoyed riding make-believe horses at the colorful People Prix, and adults savored what has become the premier show-jumping event in the nation. To top things off, the good folks at Saddle Up!, under the tireless leadership of executive director Cheryl Scutt, celebrated its 25th anniversary by becoming the official Grand Prix Honoree this year. In its history, this organization, dedicated to therapeutic horseback riding for children, has served more than 1,300 participants and provided more than 50,000 hours of service one hoof beat at a time. From the record-setting attendance, increase in sponsors and overall funds raised, it appeared everyone was in agreement that this award was well deserved.

Paddles Up Trips and treasures abound at Swan Ball Auction Party
S
wan Ball is practically a year-round event, with committee meetings and kick-offs happening throughout the fall and winter, but when the Auction Party rolls around, it’s officially Swan Ball season. For this year’s gathering, the co-chairs couldn’t have handpicked a more splendid spring evening to sip cocktails and bid, bid, bid on the terrace of the Belle Meade Country Club. The party co-chairs, Jane Ann Pilkinton and Elizabeth Hawkins, welcomed more than 500 guests to the affair, which was a chic vision in white. Working with décor chairs Jennie Garth Lowe and Sarah Bartholomew and the Tulip Tree’s Mark O’Bryan, Jane Ann and Elizabeth filled the club with white peonies and hydrangeas, including a spectacular floral centerpiece in the outdoor circular bar. The décor was stunning, but it was secondary to the massive array of silent auction items on display. Taking a cue from past auction parties, the goods were divided into various sections throughout the space — international trips, treasures, etc. — to showcase the broad scope of goodies up for grabs and to target bidders by their interests. Auction co-chairs Deborah Lovett, Robin Puryear and Ashley Rosen couldn’t contain their excitement over the million-dollar auction. When asked to identify their favorite items, they continued to add more and more to their lists. And who could blame them? This year’s selection ranged from the creative (character naming rights in bestselling author Brad Thor’s 2017 novel) to the exclusive (three nights on Marlon Brando’s private island) to the extravagant (a two-week trip to India and a pair of 50-carat citrine and diamond earrings). The trip to India, which was part of the live auction with Sotheby’s Kevin Doyle, was the second-most popular item, edged out only by the final item of the night: a New York City trip that included VIP tickets to Billy Joel and four tickets to Hamilton. As a bidding frenzy ensued, Marcie and Derek Van Mol threw in four extra tickets to the concert and play, bringing the tally up to $26,500 and ending the fabulous night on an exhilarating high.

Bright Idea The Swan Ball Patrons Party kicks off the week with color
S
wan Ball week commenced with a little West Palm Beach style at the Patrons Party, hosted in the fabulous Belle Meade home of Kathryn and David Brown. Mary Huddleston of Please Be Seated collaborated with The Tulip Tree on the design and décor, drawing inspiration for the color scheme from wallpaper in the Browns’ home in hues of orange, green and gray. The “sleek West Palm Beach vibe” was a nod to this year’s Swan Ball jeweler, Lillian H. Ostergard, who grew up in Florida. Lillian’s jewelry was the first thing to greet guests as they arrived and made their way through the manse to the tent in the backyard. Understandably, many a woman — and a few smart gents — made a lengthy detour at the display cases in the Browns’ sunroom to peruse the baubles, which were an exquisite and whimsical assortment of custom pieces ranging from striking rock crystal necklaces to personalized dog-themed cuff links for the animal lover. Outside, pops of orange and tangerine brightened up the terrace and dinner tent. Orange topiaries sat atop the boxwood bars while white umbrellas trimmed in tangerine — custom-made in Charleston — hung overhead. Bistro tables and long dinner tables were topped with orange patterned tablecloths and vibrant centerpieces of peonies, parrot tulips, garden roses and ranunculus. Adding some chic modernity to the partyscape, gold chandeliers were hung throughout the tent. The John Pell Trio provided tunes while guests mingled throughout the cocktail hour, and it took more than one chime of the dinner bell for partygoers to end conversations and take their seats. But once they did, they were treated to a delicious three-course feast from Kristen Winston. Thankfully, a storm swept through before the party began, bringing cooler temperatures in its wake and creating a breezy evening to dine alfresco.

he 54th Swan Ball embraced the natural beauty and charm of Cheekwood in a night of chic garden elegance. After ascending the mansion’s stairs, stylish ladies and dapper gentlemen stopped to marvel at the setting on Swan Lawn. Jung Lee, of New York event company Fête, captured the tradition of the ball and Cheekwood’s inherent beauty and combined it with modern elements — rectangular tables, dramatic lighting and flowers in test tubes overhead — to create a dignified and gracious scene. Equally elegant were the co-chairs. Nan Cox chose a “happiness pink” couture gown from Christian Dior with a richly hand-embroidered neckline, and Elizabeth Akers wore Lee Anderson Couture, a silk faille confection with a fondant tulle overlay. Chic ladies shining in understated metallics were Tooty Bradford, Elizabeth Nichols and Trevania Henderson in shades of gold and Ashley Rosen, Mari-Kate Hopper and Melanie Neal in silvery hues. Equally dazzling Barbara Bovender, Emily Hastings and Cheekwood president and CEO Jane MacLeod embraced rich jewel tones. When guests finally sat down to an epicurean meal by Kristen Winston Catering, Jane caught their attention long enough to present the Swan Award to music industry leader Rob Beckham. During a highly anticipated performance, our June cover girl, Reba, did not miss a note while she generously posed for selfies with fans and invited a starstruck Steve Sirls on stage to accept a bouquet of flowers. The enthralled crowd sang along with her throughout the entire hour-long set. Down the hill at the Late Party, co-chairs Caylan Jarman and Graham Meadors, with Jenny Richter Corts, transformed Botanic Hall into a fresh, sophisticated garden in shades of white and green, enhanced by lush florals from Knestrick By Design. The younger set enjoyed a fresh summer dinner from d.Kates Catering following cocktails on the Holly Lawn. After dancing to Band 24/7, they moved up to the mansion and joined revelers for the late-night party. While lucky bidders from the Auction Party went upstairs for a meet-and-greet with Reba, The Sultans filled the tent with infectious music and kept the dance floor jammed until the wee hours of the morning. by Holly Hoffman photographs by Michael W. Ashley picked up this grey silk Brunello Cucinelli gown in New York City after spotting it in a window. She said the fact that she didn’t need to wear a necklace with it made it a winner for her, and with that striking crocheted neckline, embellished with tiny jewels, it’s easy to see why.

Refreshing Reads by Jennifer Puryear, The Discerning Reader
Lab Girl, by Hope Jahren, is a joyful combination of science writing and memoir. Hope grew up playing underneath the lab tables in her father’s science classroom — but this book is every bit as much about people as it is about biology. “People are like plants,” she observes, “they grow toward the light.”
The Summer Book, a short novel by Tove Jansson first published in 1972, tells the story of a grandmother, her 6-year-old granddaughter and their summers on a remote island in the Gulf of Finland. Their isolation allows their imagination — and love — to flourish.
Like Fern in Charlotte’s Web and Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird, Jane Hamilton’s main character in The Excellent Lombards has a lot to learn while growing up. Things don’t always work out the way you hope on a family farm — but miracles happen, too.

Sweet Treats by Lokelani Alabanza, executive pastry chef at Hattie Jane’s Creamery
>> Vanilla Ice Cream 2 cups heavy cream 2 cups whole milk 1 vanilla bean, cut lengthwise and scraped 8 egg yolks 1 cup white sugar 1 ⁄8 teaspoon salt In a heavy saucepan over medium-low heat, warm heavy cream, milk and vanilla bean until barely simmering, stirring frequently. Turn heat down to low. In a large bowl, whisk together egg yolks, sugar and salt until combined. Slowly pour ½ cup of hot cream mixture into bowl with egg yolks, whisking constantly. Repeat three more times, whisking thoroughly after each addition. Pour egg yolk mixture back into saucepan with remaining hot cream, and whisk constantly over medium-low heat until mixture thickens and will coat the back of a spoon, about 5-8 minutes. Do not let mixture boil. Remove the vanilla bean and pour into a bowl, allowing to cool for 20 minutes. Chill in the refrigerator overnight. The next day, pour into an ice-cream maker, and freeze according to the manufacturer’s directions. Remove the ice cream, pack into a covered container and freeze for 2 hours or overnight before serving. Serves 8.

White Chocolate Shell
2 cups heavy cream 2 cups whole milk 1 vanilla bean, cut lengthwise and scraped 8 egg yolks 1 cup white sugar 1 ⁄8 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon matcha green-tea powder 11 ounces white chocolate 3 tablespoons extra virgin coconut oil Follow steps for vanilla ice cream, adding matcha while incorporating ½ cups of cream into egg yolk mixture. Continue following steps. After refrigerating overnight, pour into silicone ice-pop molds and freeze for 4-5 hours. (No ice-cream maker necessary.) Place chocolate in a metal bowl, and bring a small pot of water to a boil. Once boiling, place bowl over pot, creating a double boiler. Whisk constantly until chocolate is fully melted. Add coconut oil and remove from heat. Let cool for a couple minutes while removing ice-cream bars from molds. Dip bars in chocolate and place on parchment-lined pan. (Dip twice for better crunch.) Enjoy immediately or freeze for later.

M
egan Turner met Tim Vacek in October 2013 after a Titans game when she stopped by Neighbors of Sylvan Park with friends. In December 2014, Tim proposed when they took their dog Hobbs to play on a property in Franklin. While Tim was popping the question, Hobbs jumped in a pond to go for a chilly swim. The couple married in September 2015 at St. George’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Michael Blaess officiating. Megan wore a strapless, handbustled trumpet gown by Monique Lhuillier. She carried a bouquet of full-blown vendela and Juliette roses designed by Terry White. Her bridesmaids wore Amsale lace dresses and carried mojito
hydrangeas and jade green roses. The reception was at Belle Meade Country Club, where a tent for dancing was draped in boxwood garlands and live ginkgo trees in planters were grouped around the bars. A custom-painted dance floor was inspired by the floral watercolor liner of the wedding invitations by Tenn Hens. Large boxwood wreaths hung on the mirrors in the ballroom, and garlands of hydrangeas and pale apricot David Austin roses flowed down the length of the tables and cascaded to the floor. The seated dinner in the club ballroom included grapefruit and avocado salad, grilled filet mignon with bearnaise sauce, baby greens amandine and
butternut squash ravioli with cherry tomatoes. Dessert Designs created the sour cream pound cake and chocolate truffle cake. Selfie sticks were passed out before the end of dinner for guests to capture fun photos. Memphis Soul Revue played for dancing, and Jenny Richter Corts helped plan the event. After a wedding trip to Cabo San Lucas, the couple returned to Nashville where Megan is marketing director at Ajax Turner and Tim is an analyst at First Avenue Partners. She is a graduate of The University of Alabama, and he is an alumnus of Washington and Lee University.

Summertime Yin and Yang A fresh look at zucchini and yellow squash
O
ne sure sign that summer is in full swing is the continuous presence of yellow squash and zucchini in the CSA box, at farmers markets and in produce aisles everywhere. What to do? View the two abundant squash varieties as the yin and yang of summer. While the two look similar and pair together perfectly, they’re wholly different vegetables. The main difference? Yellow squash is best when cooked slowly in butter until very soft. Zucchini is best when cooked quickly, just until just crisp tender, in olive oil. Rough cut the squash however you like because in the end, shape doesn’t matter. Shape does matter with zucchini. Cut it with precision into very thin rounds, tiny cubes or thin sticks that will stay true after a quick sauté. To maximize what zucchini has to offer, try a mandoline. Consider this: have you ever had zucchini that’s been cooked until the green turns almost gray, the flavor disappearing into a watery mess? And how about those thick, photo by r.b. Quinn intimidating chunks of barely cooked yellow squash in a restaurant vegetable medley? Not good. Zucchini seems more city sophisticated; yellow squash seems more country cooking. One is lean and crisp, the other sumptuous and creamy. Adorn the zucchini with a shaved hard cheese and the yellow squash with melted sharp cheddar. Zucchini likes tomato, yellow squash not so much. And no one wants Ritz cracker crumbs on zucchini, but we sure do love it on yellow squash. When prepared correctly, what the two share is that both are the easiest sides to fix and pair well with just about any summer menu. We like zucchini topped with toasted slivered almonds and a sprinkling of Parmesan or stirred up with fresh Tennessee tomato. The yellow squash is a meat-and-three lover’s dream scooped alongside hot cornbread. Add shredded cheddar cheese or chunks of ham, and you’ve got a main dish.
>> classic saucepan yellow squash 1 medium onion, diced 3 tablespoons butter 1 ½ pounds yellow squash, sliced or chopped Melt the butter in a medium saucepan. Add the onions and cook over medium heat until soft and on the verge of browning, about 10 minutes. Add the squash and a splash of water. Reduce the heat to low, cover and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the squash becomes very soft, about 15 minutes. Mash with a fork, as desired. Season with salt and pepper. Makes 4 to 6 servings.

EAT Orchestrated by Michelin-starred chef Fabien Beaufour, the seasonal menus at Dyades, the resort’s impeccable fine dining restaurant, are ripe with inventive dishes made from local ingredients sourced from the surrounding region as well as from the expansive garden and livestock on the property. Dyades offers a creative take on rustic French dining that isn’t limited to the dining room. Enjoy a meal served in the spiral gardens or on the restaurant terrace — or order a custom luxury picnic.
SLEEP Choose from seven unique suites — named after, and inspired by, the planets — located inside The Château or four suites in The Longère, an ode to the seasons. All offer king-sized beds, luxurious bathrooms and breathtaking views of the garden and ponds. Six private farm cottages, ranging from one to five bedrooms, dot the pastoral countryside. A tribute to the largest constellations, each has its own lake, rowboat, fireplace, and cozy seating and dining areas. Like everything else on the property, rooms are restored to their original beauty and decorated with modern luxurious touches.
PLAY The estate offers over 2,000 acres of forest, lakes and rolling farmland to explore by foot, bike, horse, electric car or rowboat. Just steps from The Château, play a round of tennis on the floating court, enjoy a dip in the outdoor swimming pool or bike to the small village of Massignac. And don’t forget the kids. A magical playground with a tree house, life-size chess board, a costume room for dress-up, a zip line and a trampoline make this a fairy-tale excursion for little ones, too.
RELAX
Domaine des Etangs
The recently completed spa and yoga center, located inside the old windmill, offers packages for adults and children alike, many of which can be enjoyed in the privacy of your own suite or amid the bucolic surroundings of the property. Inspired by the dragonfly — the symbol of the resort — the roster of wellness services are designed to create harmony between body and nature. The resort’s storybook setting provides endless opportunities for relaxation. Unwind in the Roman thermal baths, experience the steam room or frigidarium or get lost in a book from the wellstocked library in The Château.
Just three hours south of Paris by train, in the Limousin region of France, lies the lavish and unconventional resort Domaine des Etangs. Garance Primat, daughter of late French billionaire Didier Primat, has meticulously restored the family’s sprawling country estate to create one of the largest five-star resorts in mainland France. The Château’s stonework and exposed wood beams have been painstakingly mended to maintain the look of the 11th-century architecture. Outfitted with modern conveniences and decorated with both antiques and contemporary art, the resort strikes the perfect balance between past, present and future. From the moment you are picked up in a teal Citroën DS Pallas and driven over the rolling hills in this remote section of southwest France, you can’t help but feel like royalty. As you cross the drawbridge, the honey-colored château welcomes you with its warm glow and traditional elegance. A quiet escape from city life, Domaine des Etangs offers an authentic French experience perfect for an intimate couple’s getaway or a family vacation.

Perennials When plants bestow more than beauty
T
he Siberian iris bloom was the last of the California season. When I spotted its deep purplish-blue against the more ostentatious hues, for a moment, memory blurred my eyes. I imagined the large bed of Iris sibirica, Caesar’s Brother — the name inspired by the togawearing brother of a high-up Roman? — that blossomed each spring in my mother’s Cincinnati garden. (She was a stickler for botanical names.) This flower is the descendant of a plant I gave my mother several decades ago, when the clump in my New Orleans yard needed dividing. In return, she potted up some Siberians known as Fourfold White, saying they’d provide good contrast to the dark blue. Leaving New Orleans for Nashville in 1985, Spouse was obsessively marshaling the transport of furniture, dishes and clothes, not to mention numerous dogs and cats. I didn’t want to see his face when I presented him with pots of perennials for the U-Haul. So I abandoned them to a life (or death) among strangers. But when Mom came to shake her head over the East Nashville Victorian in desperate need of rehab, now our home — “People of my age call this a wife-killer,” she said dryly — she brought pots of both varieties of iris, as well as some of the lemon yellow Hyperion daylilies that had grown in her garden as long as I could remember. I recall her digging them into the dark soil of Middle Tennessee, luxuriating in the rich
earth after years of struggling with clods of yellow clay. This is what gardeners do: they share plants with those they love, and when faced with a surfeit of vegetation, with just about anyone who has a sense of responsibility and a reliably green thumb. I know this because my grandmother passed along larkspur and columbine seeds — and, yes, lemon daylilies — to her daughter, who passed them on to me. And I have subsequently divvied them up among neighbors and friends, who occasionally send photos of successful progeny. By the time Spouse and I began to spend summers in a remote corner of northern California, my mother was gone and so was her garden, fallen to the low-maintenance ethic of a subsequent owner who replaced the perennial border with shrubs. On each trip west, however, I’ve tucked a small pot of one of Mom’s plants into a corner of the minivan, hoping that the border guards of this agribusiness state wouldn’t notice and confiscate. By now, iris and daylilies have established a presence in the postage stamp of soil I work here, and I am thankful that, while my mother never made it to California, some of her flowers did. Over time, plants given in love come to embody the givers, conferring new meaning on the term “perennial.” People, after all, are anything but.

or the fourth Swan Ball, chair Chippy Pirtle and co-chair Florence Lamb envisioned an evening of Eastern splendor when selecting the theme, “An Arabian Nights Fantasy.” Pre-ball press included national mentions from the likes of Suzy Knickerbocker (aka Ailene Mehle — and later, simply Suzy) and year-round local coverage, such as this Tennessean photograph of a group of Swan Ball Beauties. On June 11, these enchanting ladies and their princes danced the night away to the Lester Lanin Orchestra in an exotic garden filled with orchids, butterflies and flowers. Now, 50 years later, the Swan Ball continues to enthrall guests just as the legendary Scheherazade’s stories captivated the sultan.
