FROM DARKNESS TO SIGHT CHRONICLES THE REMARKABLE LIFE JOURNEY OF DR. MING WANG, A WORLD-RENOWNED LASER EYE SURGEON AND PHILANTHROPIST.
A
s a teenager, Ming fought valiantly to escape one of history’s darkest eras—China’s Cultural Revolution—during which millions of innocent youth were deported to remote areas to face a life sentence of poverty and hard labor. Through his own tenacity and his parents’ tireless efforts to provide a chance of freedom for their son, Ming eventually made his way to America with $50 in his pocket and an American dream in his heart, where against all odds he would earn a PhD in laser physics and graduate magna cum laude with the highest honors from Harvard Medical School and MIT. He embraced his Christian faith and tackled one of the most important questions of our time— Are faith and science friends or foes?— which led to his invention of a breakthrough biotechnology to restore sight. To date, Dr. Wang has performed over 55,000 eye procedures and has treated patients from nearly every state in the U.S. and from over 55 countries worldwide. He is considered the “doctor’s doctor,” as he has operated on over 4,000 physicians. Dr. Wang has published 8 textbooks and a paper in the world-renowned journal Nature, holds several U.S. patents and performed the world’s first laser artificial cornea implantation. He is the recipient of the Honor Award from American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Lifetime
Achievement Award from American Chinese Physician Association. Dr. Wang is currently the only surgeon in the state who performs 3D LASIK (18+), 3D Laser Kamra (45+), 3D Forever Young Lens Surgery (50+) and 3D Laser Cataract Surgery (60+). Dr. Wang established a nonprofit foundation which provides sight restoration surgeries for indigent patients who otherwise would never have the opportunity to receive them free-of-charge. This is a story of one man’s inspirational journey, of turning fear, poverty, persecution and prejudice into healing and love for others. It demonstrates how focus, determination, humility and profound faith can inspire a life that, in turn, impacts that of countless others.

consistently consistent For Larry and Sandra Lipman building their solid foundation has required consistency. From raising two beautiful daughters in their custom built home of 30 years to creating a successful and well-established real estate firm while continuing to be philanthropic pillars of their community, the Lipman’s know the value of being consistent. While we know consistency is the key to success in life, it is also one of the hardest qualities to master. At The Lipman Group Sotheby’s International Realty, we, like the Lipman’s, have mastered consistency with our extraordinary level of service. Our clients are provided with the distinguished Sotheby’s brand that exceeds all expectations in all price ranges. #liveyourextraordinary

Model Citizens Celebrating Nashville’s generous spirit This is our 12th year to celebrate local philanthropists and nonprofits through our annual Model Behavior issue, and we decided to change things up a bit. Typically, this honor is reserved for women, but this year, we decided to put a couple of men on our list. Only one man has ever been honored in Model Behavior in the past (Dick Cowart in 2009), but we’d like to make it a more regular thing. The three men celebrated in this issue have done incredible things for young people, and they were troopers at our all-day fashion photo shoot. (Michael Spalding even wore mascara for his picture, but don’t tell him I told you so.) Turn to page 52 to learn more about these generous men and women and the causes that have their hearts. I hope you’ll be

inspired to continue supporting the organizations you love — and possibly find some new ones to serve. This month, I also had the chance to chat with the lovely Gaia Gaja, a fifth-generation Italian winemaker who was the special guest at Nashville Wine Auction’s l’Eté du Vin. It’s safe to assume that anyone who met Gaia over the course of her Nashville visit was instantly charmed, myself included. Find out what she has to say about making and collecting wine on page 51. Lastly, we’ve got some great coverage of the summer’s best events, including Eve of Janus, the Belcourt re-opening and Nourish. The summer lull has been nice, but we’ll be seeing a lot more of you now that the fall season is in full swing. BY NaNcY FloYd

Nashville Six years ago, Emil Congdon was working a 9-to-5 job selling software at Dell. He was making leather bags on the side, selling them mostly at craft fairs. In July 2010, he was encouraged to enter the Made in the South Awards in a then-fledgling magazine called Garden and Gun. On the last day before the deadline, he submitted his designs. He won in the style category, so the day before the issue came out, he set up a website. Three days later, he had to quit his day job to fulfill all of the orders he’d received. Emil had begun sewing while he was paying his way through college. He got a hole in his jeans one day and decided that instead of buying new ones, he would just patch them. After his first successful sewing attempt, he wondered if he could make his own clothes. So he asked his parents for a sewing machine for Christmas, and, well, the rest is history. Once Emil received the Made in the South Award, he started work-
ing on his designs 18 hours a day out of his garage. A year later, he was able to move into a studio in Marathon Village, and in April of 2015, he opened his current shop in the Buchanan Arts District. Emil and his wife run the business, which is called Emil Erwin, and he designs and makes every item they sell. They specialize in women’s purses, but he also makes men’s bags, belts and a few other accessories. This isn’t just a job for Emil; he has dreams of Emil Erwin lasting through generations. “I’m trying to create a legacy for my children,” he says. “I want to create something that one day they can be proud to be a part of.” His newest line is a fun twist on one of his popular purses, the Dot Crossbody. Shoppers can choose from 42 colors of leather and add a custom appliqué. The options are as endless as the customer’s imagination. To see all of his designs, stop by the shop on Buchanan Street near Germantown or visit emilerwin.com.

Opening Credits At the dedication of the renovated Belcourt Theatre, director Stephanie Silverman offered advice to anyone undertaking a $5 million capital campaign: have a brilliant architect as your board chair. “I’ve never seen so many people excited about bathrooms,” said one Belcourt loyalist, referring to the sleek and spacious facilities that replace the quirky, inaccessible loos. Meanwhile, visitors lingered in gracious rooms such as the Chase Cole Alcove, the Manzler/Webb Screening Room, and the Jackson Education and Engagement Space, admiring a concession stand filled with local delicacies and walls decked with local art by Harry Underwood. Megan Barry cut the ribbon — well, actually a film strip — in front of an audience packed with Belcourt champions, including Julia Sutherland, whose tenacity saved the building from extinction in the last century. thrilled to meet the fifth-generation winemaker who serves as global ambassador for Gaja, her family’s winery. Admiring wine aficionados — including event co-chairs Kimberly Cooper, Marjorie Feltus Hawkins and Pam Taylor, tasting co-chairs Elise and Harvey Crouch, and the evening’s moderators Tom Black and Steve Taylor — posed for pictures with the charming Italian visitor. Gaia captivated the audience with family stories as she led the seated, structured tasting featuring special Gaja wines. With the running commentary from Tom and Steve, guests sipped and savored two whites: RossjBass 2014, an inviting chardonnay, and Vistamare 2014, a very limited production gem. The five impressive reds were Magari 2014, with mineral and intense flavors; the classic Brunello di Montalcino 2011, with fresh and bright aromas; DaGromis 2011, a foodfriendly wine; Barbaresco 2012, with a long complex finish and Darmagi 2010, with strong cassis flavor and impressive power. An informal show of hands overwhelmingly voted the Brunello as their favorite but believe us, they were all outstanding. Delicious accompaniments included calamari salad in a wonton cup, mini tenderloin sandwich on pretzel bread with Midnight Moon cheese and foie gras mousse profiterole that paired wonderfully with the wines. As the evening came to a close, smitten fans jumped at the first chance to purchase a limited-edition fourpack of Gaja wine before they would be snatched up at the Patrons Party or l’Eté du Vin during the weekend to come.

Who said giving back was hard work? Thanks to Eat Green for Tennessee, you can show your support for the state of Tennessee simply by eating at some of your favorite restaurants. The Land Trust for Tennessee, the beneficiary for this day of eating out and giving back, is the only organization for the protection and conservation of farmland in the entire state. They focus their time on historic land, working farms, recreational/scenic landscapes, water protection, urban open space and wildlife habitat and support the rising economy while keeping the environment and the Tennessee aesthetic in mind. They have protected nearly 100,000 acres with more added each day. By joining in and eating out, you will be supporting their mission to protect Tennessee’s natural gems for the generations to come. Two years ago, The Land Trust launched Eat Green for Tennessee as a way to spread the word about their cause, but it has now skyrocketed into a great fundraiser for the entire state. Last year, the event extended to Chattanooga and, together with Nashville, there was a grand total of 58 restaurants to choose from. The revenue doubled between 2014 and 2015, and they expect this year to top that. On Sept. 14, stop by one of the participating restaurants, and a percentage of the proceeds will go straight to The Land Trust. They have teamed up with a wide variety of places to make participating a breeze. Grab coffee and breakfast at Dozen Bakery or Frothy Monkey, lunch at Arnold’s, Butchertown Hall or Burger Up or dinner at one of the many Nashville favorites, including Prima, Josephine, Rolf and Daughters, City House, 360 Bistro and more. For additional information and a full list of participating restaurants, visit landtrusttn.org.
The need to buy local extends far beyond our food sources. Supporting artisans and brands based in our own backyard contributes to a healthier economy and stronger community. Thanks to our city’s burgeoning fashion scene, we can now fill our closets with local finds as well, and the Nashville Fashion Alliance wants to help. Mark your calendars for a fabulous weekend of local luxuries at The Reclamation and The Wardrobe Project, two brand new events from the NFA. On Sept. 29, the Nashville Fashion Alliance is teaming up with Goodwill Industries for The Reclamation, a fashionable fundraiser celebrating the collaborative and sustainable spirit of our creative community. Hosted at Track One, the event will showcase fashion installations from 12 local designers who repurpose items found in area Goodwill stores. For $275, VIPs can enjoy a multi-course dinner from Nashville chefs, including Prima’s Sal Avila and Margot Café’s Margot McCormack, as well as a surprise musical performance. A late party ticket is available for $75 for those who want to skip the dinner but enjoy cocktails and the show.
Making Space It’s only been five years since Nordstrom opened in The Mall at Green Hills, but now they’re bringing us even more designer fashions at Space. The instore boutique, the fifth location nationwide, adds a new dimension to the way we think about shopping and gives customers a fresh, exciting experience with cross-category, seasonal collections from emerging and advanced designers — apparel, shoes, handbags and accessories — all shown together. The concept was introduced in 2015 by fashion heavyweight Olivia Kim, vice president of Creative Projects, who curates an international roster of the best up-and-coming designers. “Space launched last year at our flagship locations … Nashville is such a style-centric city, and we wanted to make a statement as one of our larger, more sophisticated markets and identify our store at The Mall [at] Green Hills as a destination for fashion, style, art and culture, “ said Olivia, who made the trek from Seattle for the launch. “We see the growing fashion community in Nashville, and we recognize the appreciation for individual style. It’s a perfect match for Space.” With a fuzzy fuchsia couch, pink mannequins and Ettore Sottsass’ Ultrafragola wavy neon mirrors, the store-withina-store pops amid the established designer collections. Familiar names like Acne Studios and Ellery, elusive styles from Undercover, Koché, Anthony Vaccarello (also creative director at Yves Saint Laurent) and Marques’Almeida (winner of the 2015 LVMH Prize) and brands exclusive to Nashville fill the racks. You could visit nordstrom.com/space, but the best — and, really, the only — way to explore this exceptional shopping experience is to head to Nordstrom to see these collections on the forefront of fashion live and in person.
Escape Artist Looking for some family bonding away from cell phone screens or a team-building exercise that doesn’t involve ropes courses? Break out of the norm with a visit to The Escape Game, a series of sophisticated, challenging and interactive games that place the players right in the midst of the action. From a high-stakes art heist to a space mission to Mars, the 60-minute games transport participants to an alternate world where they race against the clock to accomplish their goal. And these games aren’t simply about reading a few playing cards or watching a screen for clues. Each game has an elaborately built set — be it a spaceship or a town in the Wild West — which players must investigate and navigate as their particular story unfolds. The number of players varies for each game, but most can house between two and eight people. And once you’re locked in the room, it’s all hands on deck to crack codes, solve puzzles, find hidden clues and ultimately (try to) escape. The Escape Game offers seven unique games at its two Nashville facilities in downtown and Berry Hill. The scenarios vary wildly and encompass everything from stopping an international terrorist threat in Classified to securing a fabled record contract in Nashville. Regardless of which game you choose, you’re in for a heart-pumping, brain-teasing 60 minutes of fun. For more info or to plan your escape today, visit nashvilleescapegame.com.
The following night, on Sept. 30, a VIP preview kicks off The Wardrobe Project, an upscale market featuring 60 of the region’s top fashion designers. Get to know the newest women’s, men’s and children’s brands hailing from the southeast, mingle with the designers themselves and stock up on one-of-a-kind additions to your wardrobe. For $50, shop ahead of the crowd at the VIP preview on Friday night from 6 to 9 p.m., or visit the public market on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. completely free of charge. he night before the long-awaited reopening of the Belcourt, an intimate group of donors were invited to gather for dinner in the art house theater’s recently renovated digs. These ardent supporters could barely hide their childlike wonder as they roamed through the new and improved facility, marveling at the impressive (and much needed) upgrades made to this historic Hillsboro Village gem. As guests arrived through the new main entrance, which now faces the parking lot instead of Belcourt Avenue, executive director Stephanie Silverman greeted them in the spacious lobby, named for late Nashville Scene editor Jim Ridley — a fitting tribute to a man who was a fixture in Nashville’s film community and a steadfast advocate for the theater. Beyond the entrance and box office, a long community table stretched the length of the lobby, which is now lined with windows overlooking the street, tastefully outfitted in black and gold by Amos Gott. Revelers squeezed past the table and one another to get a glimpse inside the 1925 and 1966 halls, which remained largely untouched in the overhaul, and to stop by the updated concessions stand to snag a bucket of popcorn or a cocktail. The real draw was the second floor, which boasts a screening room named for Mimi and Scott Manzler and Nina and H.G. Webb. The Chic Pea Catering Company prepared the three-course dinner, which included a summer vegetable tart, lamb shank and two enticing desserts (cheesecake with caramel sauce and kettle corn and an almond butter brownie with sea salt and crème anglaise), but nothing was sweeter than witnessing this beloved theater reopen to the public. “Seeing our new lobby filled with so many generous Belcourt friends, old and new, was the perfect start to our reopening weekend,” Stephanie said. “It was a beautiful evening and a moving reminder of Nashville’s love for the Belcourt.” A love that will continue for many more generations to come. by Nancy Floyd photographs by Daniel Meigs continued on page 26

Summer Bounty Nourish pairs fresh ingredients and innovative chefs

f there were a James Beard Award for Best Month for Fresh Food, July would surely win for its beautiful bounty of sweet Southern peaches, heirloom tomatoes and crisp silver queen corn. The annual Nourish benefit takes full advantage of this time of year by coupling the freshest organic ingredients with the South’s most innovative chefs, pairing luscious wines with each course and providing a top-notch silent and live auction for entertainment. It’s a winning combination that’s always sold out. This year’s event, chaired by Thomas Williams, was held in the Vista ballroom at the Hutton Hotel and benefited The Nashville Food Project, whose mission includes cultivating community and alleviating hunger by bringing people together to grow, cook and share nourishing food. Tallu Quinn, CEO of NFP, greeted guests and announced the addition of St. Luke’s Community House to their Woodmont Christian Church facility for the popular and ever-growing program. Emcee Chris Chamberlain then took the mic to introduce the guest chefs who described their individual courses down to each mouthwatering bite. From the edible spoon cradling elote with chipotle aioli created by Merchants’ new executive chef, Nick Hertel, and tomato and watermelon salad from Bill Smith of Crook’s Corner in North Carolina to spicy curried catfish on ginger grits from Asha Gomez at Atlanta’s Spice to Table and pork belly with peanuts and kimchi from Matthew Bell of Little Rock’s South on Main, every dish was delectable. And we can’t forget the scrumptious finale of yuzu posset with blueberries from Butcher & Bee’s Cynthia Wong. Each course was a phenomenal interpretation of everything the month of July has to offer.

Turning Wine Into Wishes A night of giving at the trendy aVenue
S
ometimes the best way to beat the summer heat is to sip a little wine and have a good time with some of the most giving people in Nashville. This year’s Wine and Wishes fundraiser was held at the chic aVenue in the heart of downtown Nashville as Make-A-Wish Middle Tennessee’s Young Leaders Board (YLB) hosted an amazing night of tasty food, soulful music and, of course, wine. While aVenue’s natural hardwood floors and exposed-beam ceilings provided instant warmth to the two-story space, comfy gold, black and white lounge seating created a relaxed atmosphere. Decorative elements with a farmhouse-vintage twist — like white-washed shelving and old suitcases — added a playful backdrop for the mouthwatering hors d’œuvres provided by G Catering. On the main floor, guests perused a variety of silent auction selections, including a Washburn acoustic guitar signed by top country music acts and vouchers for beautifully crafted custom-made furniture. The highly talented 12 South Band serenaded bidders with soulful classics and current-day faves. Upstairs, guests had the chance to participate in a wine pull, where participants went home with a wine valued at $20 or more. After mingling, the CEO and executive director of Make-A-Wish Middle Tennessee, Beth Torres, and the event chair, Drew Smyth, addressed the crowd with some exciting news and updates. With an ultimate financial goal of $75,000, more than $60,000 had already been raised by the beginning of the evening’s event. In addition, Beth announced that there were two Make-A-Wish recipients in attendance that evening, which encouraged the crowd to continue supporting the organization as it “grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.”

All That Jazz Glamour and luxury at Art Deco Affair

T
he Frist Center’s fourth annual Art Deco Affair was a stylish, sleek gathering that reflected the building’s architectural style and the phenomenal exhibit Bellissima! The Italian Automotive Renaissance, 1945-1975. All proceeds from the evening support the ongoing care and maintenance of our city’s significant historic landmark and important cultural space. More than 500 attendees celebrated the glamour and luxury of the Jazz Age with bellinis, tunes from popular ensemble The Hiptet, and Italian-inspired food from Catering & Events by Suzette. Honorary chairs Delphine and Ken Roberts headlined a top-notch host committee that included leaders in the art, business and fashion worlds. That could explain why attendance nearly doubled this year. Another reason is that this party is fun, and the dress code is simple: black and white attire encouraged. Ladies interpreted this in a variety of ways dressing in everything from period attire to vintage maxis to basic LBDs, and hats were far and away the most popular accessory with both genders. In the Grand Lobby, guests enjoyed cocktails and hors d’œuvres served from tables appropriately named Lancia and Ferrari. The auditorium was transformed into a trattoria, where guests feasted on made-to-order petite Caesar and rotini and Parmigiano-Reggiano spinach salads at the Fiat station before loading up their plates with creamy polenta and red wine short ribs, chicken piccata and petite filet a la Marsala with a selection of savory veggies at the Maserati table. Without a doubt, the highlight of the night was roaming The Frist freely to check out all four current exhibitions: Bellissima!; Women, Art and Social Change: The Newcomb Pottery Enterprise; Inka Essenhigh: Between Worlds and Found Narratives. These exhibits have been so popular that many guests were viewing them for the second or third time. The evening ended with dancing and desserts from Kay Mc Confections, and we overheard plenty of guests making plans to return before these exhibits leave in the fall. by Holly Hoffman photographs by Eric England

A Toast to Italy A journey through Italian winemaking at l’Eté du Vin Patrons Dinner
T
he Patrons Dinner for Nashville Wine Auction’s l’Eté du Vin is always a standout evening marked by incredible food and unforgettable wines, but this year’s gathering was made even more special thanks to an appearance by special guest Gaia Gaja of Italy’s Gaja winery. The fifth-generation winemaker not only supplied exquisite pairings for the four-course feast, but she accompanied each with a charming anecdote about the vineyard where it was grown, how it got its name or a treasured family story. As always, the dinner was held at The Hermitage Hotel and began with a cocktail reception in the lobby. Overall, 10 wines were served throughout the evening — two Champagnes from Alfred Gratien were passed during the reception, and eight Gaja wines accompanied dinner. Four of the Gaja wines came from Tom Black’s personal cellar and included vintages that Gaia herself hadn’t even tasted before. Co-chairs Kimberly Cooper, Pam Taylor and Marjorie Feltus Hawkins (who looked fabulous in her gown from our Model Behavior fashion shoot last fall) set the stage for the exquisite dinner using rich navy tablecloths accented with ornate gold accents, a perfect complement to the regal ballroom. Chefs Andy Ticer and Michael Hudman from Andrew Michael Italian Kitchen in Memphis prepared three exceptional courses anchored by rabbit, chicken liver and spinalis with a statuesque dessert of sweet ricotta cream, pistachio and candied orange prepared by Ryan McCord. One of the biggest highlights of this night is the live auction. Auctioneer Fritz Hatton, a man who has used his skills to raise over $100 million for charitable organizations, led the crowd in a lively battle over a private dinner for eight with Little Big Town at Tom Black’s house. When David Morgan and Clint Higham continued to go head-to-head, Tom agreed to increase it to dinner for 16, and each man walked away with the item for a whopping $20,000 apiece. Despite the fact that a full day of festivities awaited on Saturday, many decided to continue the party until the wee hours of the morning by following Mark Whaley and David Osborn to Broadway to share our city’s honky-tonk tradition with Gaia.

Rite of Passage A white night at Eve of Janus
I
t was a just another Saturday evening in downtown Nashville with concerts and bachelorette parties, but at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, a well-dressed crowd was arriving for the 46th annual Eve of Janus. The blacktie affair, hosted by the Nashville alumnae of Delta Delta Delta, is a rite of passage for rising college sophomores. Lovely Signs of the Times in white gowns and dashing Marshals in dinner jackets were the first to arrive in the Grand Foyer. Parents, grandparents and siblings began their evening with cocktails in the HCA Lobby, where co-chairs Carolyn Hannon and Cheryl Macey graciously accepted kudos for masterminding the multi-level event. High spirits continued during dinner in the Event Hall, but when the time came, everyone quickly moved to the CMA Theater for the presentation. Before emcee and Tri Delta alum Tracy Kornet introduced the young ladies and gents, honorary chair Scott Borinstein and junior honorary chair Parker Logan shared their gratitude for the funds raised by the Eve — more than $4 million to date — for pediatric cancer research. The presentation introduced 98 young ladies and 69 young men to an adoring crowd. It was indeed a large group, with four sets of twins and one set of triplets. The sea of white dresses included designs from fashion icon Jeanne Dudley Smith and up-and-coming Cavanagh Baker, the choice of Claire Joyce, Mary Jordan Burns and Virginia Burns, all of whom are twins. Afterward, it was time to get the party started back in the Event Hall with dessert and dancing to the Atlanta Allstars. Signs and Marshals took over the dance floor following father-daughter and mother-son dances. Meyer lemon tarts and chocolate mudslide milkshake shooters fueled nimble guests to join in a limbo contest until the last one was standing — or rather bending. Parents headed home, leaving the party to the young, who celebrated until the very last note was played.

he wonderful, wine-filled weekend that is l’Eté du Vin concluded with the event’s eponymous party at the Loews Vanderbilt Hotel. Aptly titled “Generations of Greatness,” the dinner and auction celebrated fifth-generation winemaker Gaia Gaja and her family’s Gaja wines. The charming Italian was welcomed to Nashville with abundant Southern hospitality — and with good reason. Gaia chose to attend our wine auction as one of only two U.S. appearances this year. Nashville Wine Auction’s Holly Whaley enthused, “It’s neat for our community because [we] like to show off and bring out the goods!” Hosts served the finest from their cellars, which explains why Gaia proclaimed our city the best place to drink wine. Gaja wines flowed freely during the reception, where guests perused outstanding wine lots at the silent auction and clamored to buy a glass of Piper-Heidsick Rare Millesime 2002 for the chance to win a pair of diamond and pearl earrings. Inside the ballroom, the classic black and white décor echoed Gaja’s diamond-patterned labels. Each table was decorated with a bounty of great wines, as tradition dictates that attendees bring favorites to share with friends. Whether reds, whites or Champagnes, the wines complemented chef Silvio Rosalen’s continental menu of baby lettuces with Champagne vinaigrette, Italian braised short ribs served on a bed of herb risotto and Italian olive oil cake topped with roasted strawberry and basil compote, mascarpone cream, fried basil leaf and limoncello. In between courses, Fritz Hatton took command of the stage to auction off one fantastic item after the other, including trips, dinners, and rare and large format wines that one can only find at Nashville Wine Auction events. Before dessert, servers appeared with the chef ’s favorite flatbreads — topped with a veggie medley or prosciutto and arugula — to ensure that everyone had plenty of energy to keep raising their paddles. It must have worked. This year’s events raised more than $930,000, a record-breaking amount, to support Nashville Wine Auction’s fight against cancer, further proof of our wine community’s generous spirit.

Family Tradition A chat with winemaker Gaia Gaja by Nancy Floyd
H
ailing from the quaint Italian village of Barbaresco (population: 600), Gaia Gaja was raised in a family — and community — of winemakers. Building on the legacy of four generations of Gaja men and women, Gaia, along with her sister, Rossana, is taking the family wine business into the future. Gaja wines, which date back to 1859, are routinely classified among the best in the world, and the Gaja family has consistently challenged and revolutionized the traditions and practices of Italian winemaking. We sat down with Gaia during her recent visit to Nashville Wine Auction’s l’Eté du Vin to chat about what it’s like to be a woman in the wine industry, her favorite place to drink wine and her advice for aspiring and established collectors.
What inspired you to follow in the footsteps of your father and four generations of winemakers and take over the family business? It inspired me that this was our family tradition. I liked very much the idea that I could continue a project [of] my father, my grandfather, dreams that they had, that they started. I liked that idea that things don’t end with them but that I could bring it forward. What is your earliest memory related to wine? One of the very early memories I have is of my grandfather drinking wine [like] a ritual. He was taking the bottle of the wine; he was taking out the cork; he was putting two drops of wine in a glass, and then for 20 minutes [he] was just turning these two drops, smelling, thinking and then putting it in his mouth, making it go around, then swallowing it. Then [he’d] meditate. And then when that was finished, he was going back to the bottle, opening it, taking two drops, closing it — it [took] forever. That was also the way he was serving wine when people were coming [to the] home, so they didn’t really like that he was just putting two drops [in] every glass. But you could really feel the respect that he had for the work done, for the wine. Are there unique challenges facing you as a woman in this industry? Not at all. No, because women have always been involved in making wine. In Italy, we have family businesses. It’s very unusual because 90 percent of companies in Italy — of every kind, not only wine — are family-owned. So in family-owned businesses, how can you say that the mother or the wife is not important? Everyone works. Maybe they’re not [on] the board of directors; they [don’t hold] specific titles, but everyone has always been involved. In the past, women were working hard for their family. Then they were getting married, and they were going to work hard for the family of the husband. Today, maybe we are more upfront, but we’ve always been working hard, and I don’t feel there are any challenges. None at all. As the global brand ambassador for Gaja, you travel all over the world. What are your favorite places to travel? The U.S., Germany, Switzerland — these are the three main markets for me. I love to come to the U.S. because I have a lot of friends. Also, I remember when I was little, every summer we were taking a holiday with my parents to the U.S. because my parents had to learn English. We spent summers in Seattle [and] San Francisco, so the U.S. has a big part of my heart. Another place in the world that I
really like is Japan because they are perfectionists. They really care about quality in everything. What’s your favorite place to drink wine? I’m not joking — Nashville. In these two or three days, I’ve been drinking incredible bottles of wine. There are some huge collectors here that have collections that no one else in the world has. Whatever you can dream of, you mention [it], and they have it. And I’ve been drinking some amazing wines. What’s your advice for entertaining at home? I think for me wine is a way to relax. So if I go home, the first thing I like to do is to open a bottle of wine and maybe start cooking. I like to drink a Riesling because wines that are 11 percent alcohol are light, [and] they are high in acidity. Something very easy to start with. And then when we sit down, I equally love white and red wines, and so I usually start with a white and then I go with a red. When people think of Italy, they always only think of red wines because the most important wines of Italy are Barolo, Brunello, Amarone, Barbaresco; they’re all red wines. But if you think [about it], Italy is a peninsula [surrounded] by the sea, and there is a lot of coast, and there is a lot of production of white wine on the coast to go with seafood. And so I love to discover new Italian white wines. I don’t open a huge amount of bottles of wine. I like to devote my night to one important bottle and see it from the beginning to the end and enjoy it to the last drop. What’s the best advice you’d offer to wine collectors hoping to build or add to their cellars? The first advice is not to buy bottles but to buy cases. It’s very important. For me, too, at the beginning, I was traveling to Bordeaux, and I was going in to a shop, and I was buying one bottle of that wine, which is very, very expensive, so I can [only] afford one bottle. And then of this other, I would buy three, of this I can buy six. And then you go home, and it’s the worst thing you can do because maybe you only have a bottle, so you never know when to drink it, and you can’t say that you know a wine because you drank it once, because you drank a glass of it. So if you want to learn, you need to buy it; you have to narrow down the wines that you want to learn about. You buy a case; you drink it today, tomorrow, next year, and then you can understand the behavior of the wine. Then you can say, “I know that wine.” There are so many wines to collect in the world that people get crazy, and they lose focus. Start with a little focus, and buy that and learn about that. nfocusnashville.com

The Belcourt Theatre’s mission is to engage, enrich, and educate through innovative film programming in our historic theatre, our community, and beyond.
A self-described “Belcourt movie-going fool for many, many years,” Nan Flynn was a devoted supporter of the art house theater long before she served in any official capacity there. A lifelong movie buff, Nan worked for the Walt Disney Company for over 21 years but says she’s always preferred independent films like the ones shown at the Belcourt. She currently serves as the chairman of the board, but her previous roles include secretary, co-chair of the membership committee and co-chair of the nD Festival. Calling the Belcourt a “true Nashville success story,” Nan says, “I watched the local community save it from ruins in the early 1990s, and now thanks to the generous donors of Nashville and the surrounding communities, it has been renovated and expanded to accommodate our community's voracious appetite of smart, independent programming for the next 100 years.”

The idea for Rocketown came about in 1994 when Michael W. Smith and his wife, Debbie, noticed that there weren’t any fun, safe and supervised places for kids to hang out. Hoping to give them an alternative to “cruising,” the couple launched the faith-based Rocketown in a warehouse in Franklin, offering a mix of fun attractions, live concerts, mentorship, creative opportunities and college readiness programs for teens. Since that time, the organization has moved to a facility in downtown Nashville that provides free after-school programs for students in seventh through 12th grades, a skatepark and skate shop, three concert venues, a recording studio, a coffee shop, creative workshops and more. As the founder, Michael has been involved with the organization since day one and has been an inspiration to similar facilities across the nation, including one in Phoenix that was opened by his friend, Alice Cooper.

Recognizing the Tennessee State Museum as a “remarkable place that preserves and protects so many important aspects of the state’s history,” Christine Karbowiak has served as a member of the foundation board since 1999. But she says it was the people, nearly as much as the cause, who drew her to the organization. Thanks to the passion and tireless efforts of women in leadership, like Lois Riggins-Ezzell and Leigh Hendry, Christine has been inspired to serve in her most important role: as an ambassador and advocate for the museum.

Sandra Lipman has loved dance since taking lessons as a young girl, so it was only natural that she was drawn to the Nashville Ballet. Referring to it as a “jewel here in our very own backyard,” Sandra has devoted the past 24 years to supporting the world-class performance company and dance school. Throughout the years, she has served in a variety of roles, including chairman and honorary chairman of the Ballet Ball and a member of the board of directors, development committee, board executive committee and capital campaign board. “It has been amazing to watch the transformation and growth of this organization over the years and to be a small part of it,” she says.

Equal Chance for Education
Byron black tuxedo (Oak Hall); Eton white button-down formal shirt, Black bow tie, Cummerbund (Levy’s)
Equal Chance for Education’s mission is to enable opportunities for higher education without regard to race, religion, or nation of birth.
After retiring from a long and successful career in medicine, Michael Spalding began devoting his time to another worthwhile endeavor: Equal Chance for Education. He launched the organization, which provides college tuition assistance for immigrants, in 2014. “As the first in my family to attend college and medical school, I know the impact education can have on a life,” he says. But when a young friend graduated from high school with straight A’s yet didn’t qualify for in-state tuition because she was born in another country, he knew he had to act. His efforts to help pay for her college opened his eyes to the fact that there are 10,000 students like her in Tennessee who are unable to afford college because they were born in other countries. He started Equal Chance for Education as an effort to help educate these promising students and diversify the next generation of business leaders in Nashville. The organization now provides tuition assistance to 91 students with a cumulative GPA of 3.4.

As a lawyer, Rachel Stutts was drawn to The Tennessee Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence because of their focus on policy and their legislative efforts. Her initial involvement with the nonprofit came through an internship in 2005. When she graduated from Belmont that year, she spent the next four years working full-time with the organization as a program specialist/public policy analyst. During that time, she played an active role in designing and implementing the Senator Tommy Burks Victim Assistance Academy, which now boasts over 500 graduates. More recently, she has served as a board member since 2014 and as a chairman of the Coalition’s largest fundraiser, Pearls and Pinstripes, for two years.

Established in 1889, the Andrew Jackson Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing the public’s understanding of the complex life and times of Andrew Jackson, discussing the relationship to events of today, and inspiring citizenship and pride in our nation. The Andrew Jackson Foundation endeavors to accomplish this through preservation, interpretation, exhibition, education, research and publication.

Frances Spradley’s connection to President Andrew Jackson and The Hermitage dates back four generations to her great-great-grandfather, E.B. Stahlman, one of two men tasked with replicating The Hermitage at the 1904 World Expo in St. Louis. He later served as president of the Andrew Jackson Memorial Foundation and was responsible for planning a centennial celebration in 1915 to commemorate President Jackson’s victory at the Battle of New Orleans. Following in his footsteps, Frances’ great-grandmother, grandmother and mother each served on the Ladies’ Hermitage Association (now the Andrew Jackson Foundation), inspiring Frances to eventually do the same. She has been a member of the board of trustees for eight years. During that time, she has chaired the Hermitage Gala, served as the head of the development committee for two years and has served on the executive committee as an at-large member, vice regent and now regent, doing her part to ensure that the Hermitage remains the best-preserved early presidential home in the nation.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Middle Tennessee Big Brothers Big Sisters is providing children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.
It was Big Brothers Big Sisters’ stellar reputation that first attracted James Greer to the nonprofit, which pairs adults and kids — fondly referred to as Bigs and Littles — together for mentorship opportunities. With a background in social work, James was a natural fit for the organization, and two years ago, he began working full-time with BBBS as the coordinator of match activities and outreach and a match support specialist. He also volunteers as a Big Brother himself, witnessing firsthand the transformative power that this nonprofit can have on both Bigs and Littles. “It is not often that there is an organization that brings two people together who may never have met and creates positive change for both of them,” he says.

Tennessee Higher Education Initiative The mission of the Tennessee Higher Education Initiative (THEInitiative) is to provide access to on-site, degree-bearing higher education for individuals in Tennessee prisons; to support students in leading meaningful lives in and outside prison; to prepare students for successful re-entry; and to help students become contributing members of our communities.

After a decade spent teaching AP and IB European history and psychology to high school students, Julie Doochin needed a break. She remained passionate about education, but she wanted to approach it from an organizational level and work with a different demographic. A news story about the Bard Prison Initiative, a liberal arts higher-education program in New York state, inspired her to take action in her hometown of Nashville. In 2012, after two years of planning, she launched the Tennessee Higher Education Initiative, providing higher education to incarcerated men and women within the state. As the founder and director, Julie has had a hand in everything — from planning to appointing board members to fundraising. With more than 95 percent of these prisoners eventually being released, it’s Julie’s hope that the education they receive while behind bars will equip them to become responsible, contributing members to society and better role models for their children. “I can’t imagine doing work that would have a more tangible and generational positive impact to our communities,” she says.

Cheekwood
Sally LaPointe black cashmere tunic dress with crochet lace skirt (Jamie); Alexis Bittar lucite earrings (AshBlue); St. John black satin and gold belt, Gucci black jeweled panther brooch (Nordstrom)
The mission of Cheekwood is to preserve this historical landmark where beauty and excellence in art and horticulture stimulate the mind and nurture the spirit.
With its 55 acres of lush landscape, world-class art installations and an impressive year-round roster of family-friendly events, Cheekwood has earned a place in the hearts of Nashvillians since opening to the public in 1960. But the beloved botanical gardens and museum will be offering even more to visitors in the coming year thanks to a massive initiative to renovate and restore the Cheek mansion to its original 1930s splendor, a project made possible in part due to the extensive research efforts of Joan Cheek. Working with historians and archivists, Joan has been traveling the country to record oral histories and collect documents and photos from the Cheek family and friends. In addition to her role as the chair of the historic initiatives committee, Joan currently serves on the board of trustees and the executive committee.

Lale s r e v i R ha Samant marries ghton u o r B erman h S y a J
In 2014, when she was a senior at The University of Alabama, Samantha Lale met Jay Broughton on a blind date arranged by a sorority sister. The date was to attend the Knights of Ecor Rouge Mardi Gras Ball in Fairhope, Alabama. “Jay drove to Tuscaloosa to meet me the week before the ball,” said Samantha. “He took me to dinner at Nick’s in the Sticks. We talked about everything, and — as nervous as we both were — we hit it off pretty fast.” Later that year, six days before Christmas, Jay took Samantha to dinner at Nashville City Club. “While waiting for our table,” said Samantha, “we walked into an empty room with floor-to-ceiling
windows. The city below was breathtaking, glowing in Christmas lights. He reached inside his jacket and took out a picture of a house with ‘SOLD’ written in red. He said the only thing that would make this house a home would be if I married him. He got down on one knee and pulled out a ring. On our way back to the bar, we encountered both our families stepping off the elevator, ready to celebrate.” They married in May 2016 on the rooftop Carlton Terrace at the Country Music Hall of Fame, where her grandfather Billy Sherrill was inducted in 2010. Guests enjoyed a glass of Champagne before the ceremony. The Echelon Choir sang and Memphis
Soul Revue played later for dancing. The bride wore a Vera Wang gown. Her “something blue” was a heartshaped piece of her grandfather’s shirt, which she wore on the inside of her dress near her own heart. After a wedding trip to Exuma, Bahamas, the couple returned to their home in Fairhope, Alabama, and their work in Mobile. Samantha is a teacher at Little Tree Preschool, where she works with children with autism, and Jay is a civil engineer at Volkert Inc. After attending The University of Alabama, she received her master’s in applied behavioral sciences from Lipscomb University and he a master’s from the University of South Alabama. by Sandy Nelson

deconstructing the dish

A twist on traditional smoky pulled pork While nashvillians have been distracted by the biscuit revival and corn tortilla parade, Publix has been quietly cranking out loaves of Cuban bread and stocking Cuban sandwiches in the deli’s grab-and-go section. (Figures a Florida-based chain would understand the value of the pressed sandwich with pork, cheese, pickles and mustard on a crispy, airy Cuban baguette.) Great Cubans are available at places like Back to Cuba, Mitchell Delicatessen and Cochon Butcher, and we expect to see more as relations with Cuba thaw out from the Cold War. In anticipation of pending cross-cultural infusions, let’s get ahead of the curve and make Cuban pulledpork sandwiches with pickled onion slaw. This is the one time when barbecue-style meat really benefits from crusty bread instead of the usual soft bun. The deconstructionist approach swaps traditional smoky pulled pork with one inspired by the flavors of the Caribbean like fresh citrus, garlic and cumin. So, no smoke and no sauce — and no backyard smoker either. It’s hands-free kitchen cooking in a slow cooker. And, rather than take the time to marinate the pork in advance, the meat marinates as it slow-cooks to pull-apart perfection. A supermarket-sized Boston butt makes enough for a big family dinner, a weekend get-together or a tailgating feast.

Cuba Meets the South
>> Cuban Pulled Pork Sandwich
AUTHENTIC NEW AMERICAN 700 12th Avenue South, Nashville primanashville.com | 615.873.4232
1 (5- to 7-pound) Boston butt/pork shoulder 1/2 cup freshly squeezed lime juice 1/2 cup orange juice 8 cloves garlic
1 tablespoon ground cumin 1 tablespoon kosher salt Black pepper, to taste Cuban bread (or bread of choice)
Place the pork in a large (5- to 7-quart) slow cooker, fat side up. Add the remaining ingredients and cook 6-7 hours on high or 10-12 hours on low, until the meat is pull-apart tender and the internal temperature is 190 F. Shred the meat with two forks and serve on bread topped with pickled onion slaw. Make-ahead tip: When the pork is cooked, remove it from the cooker with tongs and a large slotted spoon and set aside. Pour the remaining juices into a small bowl, allow to cool and refrigerate. Pull the meat into shreds with forks, cover and refrigerate. After the meat juice has chilled, remove the hard fat layer on top with a spoon and discard. Combine the remaining juice with the meat when reheating. Makes about 16 servings.
>> Pickled Onion Slaw 1 small red cabbage, thinly shredded 2 red onions, thinly sliced 1 cup white vinegar
1 cup boiling water 2 teaspoons kosher salt
Combine all the ingredients in a bowl. Cover and chill overnight. Makes about 6 cups.

SLEEP Each of the 10 rooms and four suites is uniquely decorated with hand-braided rugs on hardwood floors, original art, handmade quilts and branch-adorned furniture. Most include a wood-burning fireplace and several have balconies with lounges and outdoor showers. Heated towel racks, cozy bathrobes and L’Occitane toiletries can be found in bathrooms, many of which boast steam showers and soaking tubs. A fully stocked fridge offers complimentary soft drinks, bottled water and snacks, and nightly turndown service features homemade treats from The Chocolate Fetish nearby in Asheville.
PLAY Every week, The Swag welcomes a special guest, ranging from songwriters to storytellers to painters, to entertain guests, lead hikes, teach classes and educate visitors about the region. Croquet, volleyball, racquetball and horseshoes are offered on the grounds, and on the other side of a chestnut fence, just 30 feet from the hotel door, Great Smoky Mountains National Park provides endless opportunities for hiking and adventure.
RELAX With the crisp mountain air and the picturesque setting, relaxation comes easy. Guests can read a book on the covered porch, assemble a puzzle near a roaring fire or unwind in a hammock or Adirondack chair at Gooseberry Knob, a nearby clearing with a great view of the mountains. The inn features a hot tub overlooking the grounds as well as a redwood sauna, and massages can be booked for an additional fee. Five hideaways — like gazebos and tree houses — are littered along the adjoining hiking paths, offering a quiet place for reflection and solitude.
DINE Dinner is a special time at The Swag, with guests enjoying hors d’œuvres on the covered porch before gathering around community tables and dining together like family. Many friendships have been forged around these tables throughout the years, and it’s no wonder. A buffetstyle breakfast is served each morning, with a lavish not-to-be-missed brunch offered on Sundays. Lunch is packed in a brown bag, backpack or picnic basket so guests can enjoy it whenever — and wherever — they’d like. Since The Swag is located in a dry county, guests are encouraged to bring their own alcoholic beverages to enjoy with meals.
The Swag
Waynesville, North Carolina Perched at 5,000 feet above the Cataloochee Divide along the edge of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, The Swag welcomes visitors with breathtaking vistas and warm Southern hospitality. Once the vacation home of proprietors Deener and Dan Matthews, the property was converted to a country inn in 1982 for the World’s Fair in Knoxville. Discovering a penchant for hosting, the couple now operates the 14-room all-inclusive mountain retreat from April to Thanksgiving each year, joining their guests daily for breakfast and dinner. Charming touches, like patchwork quilts, centuries-old hand-hewn lumber and personalized wooden hiking sticks that are gifted to guests, set the stage for this rustic hideaway, but thoughtful amenities, expertly prepared meals and an attentive staff ensure a luxurious getaway is experienced by all. by Nancy Floyd

Please, Sorry and Thank You Expert etiquette advice from John Bridges
He’s a Big Boy I’m a recent divorcée who is trying to get back into the dating game after nearly 30 years of marriage. A handsome and successful gentleman asked me for dinner, and I desperately want to say yes. The problem? He’s my son’s boss. Is this a disaster waiting to happen? —Anonymous I assume your marriage is over, right? If so, your son’s job isn’t in peril. If you were married for 30 years, I suppose you’re fully grown, and the gentleman is very likely the same. He’s asked you for dinner, not for a ring-fitting. I don’t believe he’s concerned about your boy around the office — if I may say so — at your age, and why should you be? One night at a lovely restaurant is just that. You can say yes. Just try not to sound too desperate. I bet he doesn’t want to talk shop. Remember “dates”?
WHen Worlds Collide A couple of weeks ago, I went to a department store to buy a bra. When I got back to my car, I pulled out of the parking lot and bumped the car behind me. (This happens.) The woman I’d bumped immediately started calling 911. I told her this was not an emergency, but she kept calling 911, again and again, until three cop cars showed up. She refused to accept my insurance card. She was an older person, and she was wearing slacks and a nice jacket. My hair is dyed purple, and I was in a T-shirt and shorts. Quite frankly, she scared me — even more than the cops — and I blew up. How could I have dealt with this? —Linda, Nashville It sounds like you dealt with this oddball encounter perfectly well, until you exploded right there in the parking lot in front of the cops. If you didn’t do damage to her car, trust me, the cops would have seen the older lady for what she’s worth. (I have a theory that she didn’t start behaving this way two weeks ago.) She was the one who called the police and the one who refused to take your card. It sounds like she got to be the star of the evening, and when she got home that night, I’m sure she had lots to say about your hair and the shorts and T-shirt all while sipping on a drink. I trust you had one, too. Maybe, however, you might want to rethink the purple hair ...
at a loss I hear that Miss Manners (whoever she is) has said a thank you note should eliminate the words “thank you.” I heartily disagree, but maybe you can determine whether Miss Manners actually wrote this, and if she did, have at her. —Joe, Nashville “Miss Manners” is Judith Martin’s writing sobriquet, and I don’t read her — and never have — for fear of plagiarizing. I bet, though, that what she means about saying “thank you” is that surely you must have some other way to start off a note. And you do, don’t you?

Role Models Not such a tall order
Mattel hasn’t lasted seven decades for nothing. Developing a female president Barbie this year was a brilliant move — and just in time for our Model Behavior issue too! But where have I been during those 71 years? Clearly not paying enough attention to child’s play. Evidently, the 2016 Barbie is the sixth iteration of President Barbie, but the big difference is that she now comes with a running mate and a nifty podium with a banner reading “First All Female Ticket!” The dolls are available in a range of skin tones, conveying hope to every little girl who might aspire to leadership in any arena. Honestly, the president and veep dolls look a lot more fun than the fashion Barbies of the ‘60s who seemed kind of vapid. How many times can you change a doll’s clothes, anyway? And keeping up with the miniature shoes, bags, belts and hats? As soon as they were removed from the package, they scampered off to parts unknown, never to be seen again. Imagine two little girls holding debates via their 12-inch-tall surrogates or one 8-year-old arguing both sides in two different voices. Now that would be intriguing! Better than a debate class for learning to express different points of view. It makes you wonder whether other appropriate accessories might be available — maybe an Air Force One instead of a silly pink car. An American flag, for sure, along with a tiny copy of the Constitution. Throw in a couple of cell phones (two for each of them because really important people absolutely cannot live with only one phone). You could get crazy and add a minuscule selfie stick and a pair of teleprompters. After seeing how things go without them, they don’t seem like such a bad idea.
They’ll need staff, of course; let’s throw in a few Ken dolls who scurry about fielding calls, making appointments and bringing coffee (tiny Keurig and Styrofoam cups sold separately). I’d like to see a female press secretary and female speechwriter, who would come with a thesaurus in one hand and maybe a copy of Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations in the other. On second thought, that’s probably more retro than forwardthinking. I’m not sure anyone quotes others anymore — at least, not accurately. But couldn’t little girls use some inspiration? Not to mention the rest of us ... As fun as all these petite parts would be, what the Barbie candidates really need are the qualities embodied by those in this month’s fashion spread, proven role models who live out their passions with integrity. Maybe Mattel could include a big black bag containing the three traits sought by the characters in The Wizard of Oz: a heart, courage and a brain. While there are ways to lose these qualities, at least temporarily, it’s also possible to rebuild them. But if you lose that doll-sized Constitution or if the little thesaurus gets sucked up by the vacuum cleaner, anyone who’s had a child in his or her house for any length of time knows that those things aren’t coming back. In response to the fundraising letters that are arriving in mailboxes and inboxes all over the country, instead of sending in a check, I think I’ll box up a regulation-size thesaurus or a copy of Bartlett’s and send it to campaign headquarters. Maybe a little inspiration will rub off on somebody in the office.

Those Were the Days 1991
For fundraisers in 1991, menu tastings were newsworthy events; silent auctions were relatively new phenomena, and the Eve of Janus was held on New Year’s Eve. Frances Spradley co-chaired the 22nd party and was joined by a lively and supportive group of friends, including past chairs Lake Eakin, Laurel Buntin, Pam Bell and Meg Turner. Frances’ commitment to the nonprofit community continues today, which garnered her a spot in this year’s Model Behavior for her efforts with the Andrew Jackson Foundation. And, of course, the Eve of Janus is still a fixture on our social calendars, although these days, we toast the lovely Signs and Marshals in July.
Front row, left to right: Kim Oldham, Lake Eakin, Co-chair Frances Spradley, Anne and Walter Morgan, Laurel Buntin, Vicki Markham, Pam Bell, Lucie Cammack, Meg Turner Back row: Sam Felker, John Eakin, Jimmy Spradley, Kathy and Bobby Rolfe, Louie Buntin, Mark Markham, Benny Bell, Ward Cammack, Scott Turner
