Tennessee’s First SMILE New and Minimally-invasive Surgery for Myopia (Nearsightedness) is First Major Advance in LASIK Technology in 25 Years, Reducing Dependence on Glasses and Contacts short pulses is used to make small incision in the cornea to create a disc-shaped piece of tissue. This tissue is then removed by the surgeon though the opening which causes the corneal shape to change, permanently changing the prescription. SMILE has a proven track record of success. It has been used internationally since 2011 and more than 750,000 procedures have been performed worldwide. Dr. Wang noted that currently, the procedure has not been approved to treat large amounts of astigmatism and cannot treat farsightedness and that LASIK is still a better option for a majority of the patients seeking laser vision correction.
The first major advance in LASIK technology in 25 years, the SMILE procedure, was performed in Nashville recently at Wang Vision 3D Cataract & LASIK Center by its director, internationally renowned ophthalmologist Dr. Ming Wang, Harvard & MIYT (MD, magna cum laude); PhD (laser physics). “We are extremely very excited to be the first again to introduce the next generation laser correction procedure to the state, helping out patients with this new and minimally invasive procedure,” said Dr. Wang. Myopia is a common eye condition in which close objects can be seen clearly but distant objects are blurry without correction. LASIK and PRK have been the main stay treatments for myopia for over two decades. But SMILE, which stands for SMall Incision Lenticule Extraction, has unique advantages over LASIK. The SMILE surgery is minimally invasive as the surgeon needs only to create a small, precise opening to correct vision. No flap is needed. The laser incision is smaller than 5 millimeters for SMILE, compared to approximately 20 millimeters for LASIK. This
helps the cornea to retain more of its natural strength and reduces the risk of rare flap complications. Dry eye after SMILE is also reduced compared with LASIK, as nerves responsible for tear production during the cornea remain more intact in SMILE. One of the state’s first SMILE patients was Margaret Coleman, 34, a manager of the world-famous Bluebird Café, in Nashville, which was prominently featured in the ABC TV drama “Nashville”, among others. Ms. Coleman has had poor eyesight all of her life, legal blind in both eyes without correction. Ms. Coleman’s 3D Laser SMILE procedure went beautifully and she is thrilled to have her crystal clear new vision and newly gained independence on glasses or contacts and being one of the first patients in the state to receive SMILE!
Dr. Ming Wang, a Harvard & MIT graduate (MD, magna cum laude), is the CEO of Aier-USA, Director of Wang Vision 3D Cataract & LASIK Center and one of the few laser eye surgeons in the world today who holds a doctorate degree in laser physics. He has performed over 55,000 procedures, including on over 4,000 doctors. Dr. Wang published 8 textbooks and a paper in the world-renowned journal Nature, holds several US patents and performed the world’s first laser-assisted artificial cornea implantation. He established a 501c(3) non-profit charity, Wang Foundation for Sight Restoration, which to date has helped patients from more than 40 states in the U.S. and 55 countries, with all sight restoration surgeries performed free-of-charge. Dr. Wang is the Kiwanis Nashvillian of the Year.

In the words of stylist and fashion designer Rachel Zoe, “Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak.” This issue of Nfocus is full of people and spaces revealing much about their unique, elegant, impeccable selves without ever uttering a word. Our cover story is all about Jason Wu’s first visit to Nashville. The fashion designer brought his sophisticated style to town when he headlined the Symphony Fashion Show alongside country group Little Big Town (page 61). Band member Karen Fairchild and Jason are friends, and she’s actually the one who suggested him for the event. When we booked a cover shoot with Jason, he returned the favor and suggested Karen and her bandmate Kimberly Schlapman
join him. There were absolutely no complaints from our team to photograph this gorgeous trio a couple of hours before the show. The ladies borrowed their outfits right off the models’ backs, posing in looks from the Fall 2018 collection that hit the runway later that night. Style extends far beyond the wardrobe, and nothing proves that better than the seven houses recognized in our annual Homes of Distinction feature. Igor Babailov As a child, portrait artist Igor Babailov loved to watch his father, who was also a painter, at work at his easel. Because of this early exposure, Igor has drawn and painted since before he can remember — completing his first commissioned portrait at the mere age of 4. He received a formal education at The Russian Academy of Arts, one of the oldest art academies in the world, dating back to 1757. In terms of teacher-student lineage, he is a third-generation student of both Ilya Repin and Valentin Serov. He’s completed more than 2,000 portraits in his career, and the list of his subjects reads like a who’s-who of world leaders, nobility and persons of note, including George W. Bush, Nelson Mandela, Vladimir Putin, three popes, and a host of dukes, princes and princesses. We recently had the opportunity to chat with Igor about his highly accomplished life as a painter, his interests and calling Nashville home. by Lauren Langston Stewart photograph by Daniel Meigs

What is one luxury you can’t live without? Soaring 24-foot ceilings with the large natural light window in my studio. Besides accommodating my large portrait paintings and multi-figurative murals, the large space helps me to think clearly and create. As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? For as long as I remember, I have always wanted to be an artist. Like Raphael, at the age of 9, I entered into a fine arts school, which became the first step of my 16-year formal art education. Who has influenced your life the most? My mother. She taught me that even in the most challenging of circumstances, if you believe in yourself, stay true to what your heart tells you — with honesty, respect, working hard and fighting for what you believe in — everything is possible, even in the most impossible situations. What was your first job? I painted my first commissioned portrait at 4 years of age, a portrait of my daycare friend’s father, and yes, I earned a beautiful toy car for it! Later on, as an art student, I drew quick 15-minute portraits on the street to satisfy long lines of people wanting to have a sketch done by me. That helped pay for some of my student expenses. Who were you most nervous to paint? In my mind, all my famous clients, first of all, are people. I always say that if I start thinking who it is sitting in front of me, my hand may start shaking, so I wouldn’t want that to happen. Where does your inspiration come from? It can come from anywhere: travels, books, music, movies, meeting interesting people.
What brought you to Nashville? I travel extensively all over the world, and Nashville is my home, the place where my heart is. Nashville holds for me an indescribable spirituality and laid-back warmth. The sky seems much “lower” and European. It is not as fluorescent. Here we have magnificent sunsets and gentle rolling hills. The people all make one feel so at home. How many paint brushes you own? In my professional career, I have had literally hundreds of brushes. I use them, so they come and go. I also keep a special brush which has a sacred meaning to me, the brush that my father used when he was a student in the late 1950s. He gave me this brush when I was 13, at the time I entered a specialized art school for gifted children. If you could pull together a dinner party with a combination of any of the subjects you’ve painted, who would be there? Three presidents of three countries, two prime ministers, British royalty and three popes. Who is your favorite Nashvillebased artist? I think Dawn Whitelaw is a very fine painter — as well as she is a wonderful down-to-earth person. If you could trade places with anyone for a day, who would it be? George Washington What’s your biggest pet peeve? The plague of plagiarism and copyright infringement that artists and musicians are often exposed to. Those folks — either Americans or foreigners, who take others’ ideas without giving them proper credit and in order to profit from it — just don’t play ethically. What trait do you admire most in others? Integrity

A Trip to the Tropics Old Cuba meets new Nashville at Havana Nights

he Interfaith Dental Clinic transported a winter-weary crowd to Havana, Cuba, with bright colors, upbeat rhythms and lush tropical flowers. The nonprofit’s annual fundraiser embraces a different theme each year, and this time they looked to the historic Caribbean city for inspiration at Havana Nights. The team of oral surgeons at OMSNashville co-chaired the event, and each of them — Dan Burchfield, Margaret Hamilton, Bruce McLeod, Gregory Richardson, John Shea, Kevin West and Andy Wicke — shared the responsibilities of planning the vibrant evening. Guests were drawn into Rocketown by the strains of salsa music, which was just a hint of the West Indian-inspired night to come. Servers — accessorized with Panama hats or pareos — worked their way about the room with an assortment of tantalizing appetizers including seafood ceviche, ham croquetas and yuca fries. Towering blow-up palm trees made it easy to find the bar where Cuba Libres and mojitos were the preferred beverages. With drink in hand, people pondered their bids at the silent auction and studied renderings of the clinic’s new facility that will increase the number of treatment rooms from 10 to 18, among other improvements. A traditional dinner awaited everyone, and there was something for every appetite. Chef ’s Market prepared a feast of favorite Cuban dishes including arroz con pollo, whole carved pig, and black beans and rice with an assortment of toppings. Elsewhere, Cubano sandwiches and beef empanadas were served in paper-lined cigar boxes and, of course, there was an abundance of fried plantains. Traditional flan and guava cheese turnovers finished the meal on a sweet note. The evening may have ended with everybody dancing to tunes from Garage Band Revival, but the benefits from the night live on. The event raised more than $200,000 that will help Interfaith Dental Clinic and its volunteer professionals serve low-income, uninsured families and seniors with transformational dental care and bring more healthy smiles to Middle Tennessee. by Holly Hoffman photographs by Daniel Meigs

Electrifying Fun Hands-on entertainment at Adventure Science Center’s Mad Bash
W
hen a mad scientist offers you a sparkling neon-green drink at the door, you know it will be a great night! The wacky welcome planned by co-chairs Rankin McGugin and Sara Perry set the tone for Mad Bash, the party where grown-ups get to act like kids — but with cocktails. Four hundred and fifty people converged on the Adventure Science Center for an adults-only evening. By adding more sophisticated activities, the education staff led guests through familiar demonstrations with new twists. Crowds gathered at experiential attractions like Rubens’ Tube, a flame demonstration with sound waves, and the Van de Graaff Generator, literally a hair-raising encounter thanks to static electricity. At the debut of the virtual reality exhibit, the Planet Pollinator, they helped the queen and her worker bees cross-pollinate flowers and return to the hive. With so much to do, everyone worked up appetites. The wizards at Chef ’s Market concocted the glowing cocktail, the Brainwave — made with gold glitter! — as well as a fantastic array of food. There were fried green tomatoes with pimento cheese and honey-glazed chicken bites served on the ground floor, and a buffet brimming with sliders, sweet potato grits, fire-roasted vegetables, and smoked Gouda mac-and-cheese cupcakettes sat upstairs. An assortment of decadent truffles completed the menu. Mad Bash raised almost $143,000 to support the extraordinary exhibits at the Adventure Science Center, which was visited by more than 352,000 people last year. Opening on June 2, the family-friendly Beyond Rubik’s Cube will be an exploration of the science and math behind the tricky 3-D puzzle. We can’t wait to see what fun it brings!

Shining Examples T.J. Martell Foundation hosts a star-studded night
A
comedy routine from Jeff Foxworthy and performances from Keith Urban, Thomas Rhett, Natalie Grant and Lauren Alaina were among the highlights of the Honors Gala hosted by the T.J. Martell Foundation. Despite all the charisma onstage, the true stars of the night were the five individuals being recognized for contributions to their professions and for deeds that inspire the community. The gala always welcomes a high-profile crowd from the business, medical, sports and entertainment industries who join family and friends to celebrate the award recipients. For the 10th anniversary of the event — and the 25th year of the nonprofit’s partnership with Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center — co-chairs Danielle Bouharoun and David Kells gave extra effort in planning a memorable night. The Omni Hotel quickly filled up with well-wishers congratulating the honorees and welcoming presenters Jeff Foxworthy, Agenia Clark, Ron Eavey, Mike Fisher and Frank Thomas. Charles Esten returned as emcee for the sixth time and kept the program running smoothly through the award presentations. James Netterville received the Medical Research Advancement Award, and Mike Smardak earned the Tony Martell Outstanding Entertainment Achievement Award. Agenia recited the Maya Angelou poem “Phenomenal Woman” before handing the Lifetime Humanitarian Award to Janet Ayers. Appropriately, Mike gave the Spirit of Nashville Award to David Poile — “the man who turned Nashville into Smashville.” Before Frank Bumstead received the Frances Preston Outstanding Music Industry Achievement Award, Keith serenaded Frank’s wife, Ann, with “Blue Ain’t Your Color.” He may have forgotten the words, but Keith’s quick ad-libbed lyrics about Ann received laughter and applause. When honoring exceptional leaders every year, the T.J. Martell Foundation recognizes individuals whose dedication to their community and professions mirrors the organization’s commitment to funding innovative medical research to find treatments and cures for cancer. By the end of the night, this year’s Honors Gala raised more than $425,000, taking the grand total over the $4 million threshold to support cutting-edge cancer research.

A
ncient Romans would have appreciated the Frist Gala Patrons Party. Intimate dinner parties played an important role in their society, and hosts made every effort to provide the best for their guests. It was with a similar dedication to entertaining that co-chairs Dara Russell and Mary Jo Shankle planned a classical affair for the generous supporters of Rome: City and Empire, the stunning exhibition at the Frist Art Museum. During the chatty cocktail hour, everyone seized the opportunity to step into the quiet of the Ingram Gallery and view more than 200 objects on loan from the British Museum. The intriguing art and artifacts â&#x20AC;&#x201D; many of which have never been seen outside the institution â&#x20AC;&#x201D; included portraits of emperors, citizens and mythological figures in addition to remarkable examples of pottery, jewelry, coins and ritual objects that tell the history of the empire and provide insight into Roman life. Luxurious floral arrangements in the lobby set the tone for the elegant night designed by Big Events. Inspired by the exhibit and its marble statues, they transformed the auditorium into a handsome dining room with creamy white draping on the walls and ceiling and utilized crisp, white linens with gold accents throughout. Centerpieces, appropriate to the period and region, contained rich combinations of ivory, white and blush roses and olive and bay laurel greenery accented with green pears, artichokes and grapes. Guests quickly filled tables, identified with gold Roman numerals, in anticipation of a four-course menu from Kristen Winston Catering. Influenced more by modern dishes than ancient delicacies, the meal began with classic Caesar salad, followed by herb and ricotta stuffed pasta with lobster and beef filet with spring vegetables. Vanilla gelato brought a sweet end to the meal. After the refined night, patrons left with a renewed appreciation for the bygone civilization as well as The Frist, the only North American venue for the international tour of Rome: City and Empire.

Make It Work It’s all about local talent at the Nashville Designer Showcase
N
ashville Fashion Week started off in style at the Nashville Designer Showcase, an evening of runway shows from six local designers. The ohso-chic crowd arrived at Oz Arts, admiring a colorful new exhibit from Nashville sculptor Alex Lockwood that lined the halls on their way to the party. Oz hosted all four nights of runway shows, marking the first time in Nashville Fashion Week history that the venue remained the same all week — although with unique runway layouts each day and different lighting and décor schemes, it felt like something new every single night. There was a sizzling energy in the air — and not just from the wild thunderstorm happening outside — as revelers sipped specialty cocktails, sampled stylish eats from G Catering and posed in the photo booth. Lily Guilder — the brand of designer Caitlin Stolley — kicked off the runway show, showcasing a blend of sparkly, fur-lined and colorful separates for men and women. Caitlin’s sweet pup — a pomchi named Bowie — made the most adorable accessory of the night and earned squeals of adoration throughout the crowd. The flirty floral dresses and dramatic gowns from Truly Alvarenga’s Pink Elephants Designs, which showed second, would be very at home anywhere from Steeplechase to Symphony Ball. Any Old Iron’s Andrew Clancey, who has designed pieces for everyone from Beyoncé to Miranda Lambert, had fun with his signature sequined looks, painting up the models to look like zombies, accessorizing them with grisly props like skulls and hatchets, and sending them down the runway to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.” These looks really were to die for! A performance from alt-country duo Escondido during a brief intermission allowed the models to be de-zombied before the final three collections. Ola Mai’s upbeat music was the perfect complement to designer Leslie Stephen’s colorful and flouncy styles while Ona Rex’s Spring/Summer collection — which designer Ashley Balding lovingly refers to as “Jellyfish on Mars” — was all about bold colors and striking silhouettes. Closing out the show was Fashion Forward Fund recipient Maria “Poni” Silver, whose current collection from her Black by Maria Silver brand was inspired by her mother, a Dominican immigrant who first moved to New York City in the 1970s. It was a stylish start to Nashville Fashion Week and a great reminder of the bright sartorial talent in our own city.

A
t the Tennessee Kidney Foundation’s annual black-tie gala, co-chairs Fredericka Mason and Amy Peterson turned back the clock, channeling the elegance and glam of the 1920s for this year’s Prohibition Ball. “We want everyone to celebrate their best life, best self, best glam, even in the most unfortunate circumstances,” Fredericka said. “Tonight is all about honoring the lives that Tennessee Kidney Foundation saves and showing generosity, fun and the spirit of the ’20s.” The ladies and their tireless committee chose the ’20s theme as a fun nod to Al Capone’s connection to Nashville. The mobster was rumored to have stayed over in Nashville during his famous rum runs. Fredericka and Amy created a celebration straight out of the pages of The Great Gatsby with white feathered chandeliers, art deco beaded tablecloths and signature cocktails like The Kidney 72 (a play on a French 75). They worked with event planner Ron Sanford to transform the Omni Hotel ballroom into a 1920s-style theater. Art deco-style TKF logos were projected onto the walls; music of the era wafted over the speakers during the cocktail party, and a jazz ensemble performed during dinner. “Instead of more décor, we wanted people to be the décor,” Ron says. And the team succeeded. Guests showed up in a plethora of fabulous fashions of the period, donning everything from flapper-style gowns to feather headdresses. The night was glamorous and lively, but the real reason for the event was never far from anyone’s mind. The fundraiser provides valuable funds for the Tennessee Kidney Foundation’s mission to serve those at risk for or suffering from kidney disease. It’s a mission that co-chair Amy Peterson understands all too well. Seven years ago, she donated a kidney to her father. Her dad — along with his surgeon — were among those celebrating the importance of Tennessee Kidney Foundation’s work and contributing to the nearly $300,000 that the Prohibition Ball raised to further the organization’s mission.

t was all glitz and glam at the ninth annual Dancing for Safe Haven as more than 550 people filled the Hilton Nashville Downtown for an evening of friendly competition to benefit Safe Haven Family Shelter and its work to end family homelessness. An energetic crowd enjoyed cocktails in the lobby while upstairs, the eight celebrity dancers and their professional counterparts from Nashville Ballroom & Company were surprisingly calm. A few of the volunteer performers brought special talents to the contest. Chris Simonsen’s musical theater background is well known, and Martha Ivester has 13 years of classical ballet training. The most surprising skill? Shane Tarleton was once a member of a clogging team! Angela Bostelman, LaDonna Boyd, Moni Advani, Manish Shah and Savannah Grimm joined them for a most entertaining display of fancy footwork. The boisterous crowd needed no prodding to move to the ballroom for dinner and the show. Bluesy performances from co-chairs Kyle Allen, Kenny Williamson and Karen Hingtgen kicked off the program before Sameera Lowe received the Hero Award for her years of service in many capacities. Emcees Woody Wood, Jim Chandler and Kelly Sutton — who won the first Audience Favorite Award — kept things running smoothly. If anyone had stage fright, no one knew. The eight teams dazzled everyone with routines that included a sassy salsa and fabulous foxtrot. When the winners were announced, it was LaDonna who won Judges’ Favorite Award for her red-hot tango, and Angela received the Fundraising Favorite Award. With a cheering section led by zealous friends Reba McEntire and Martina McBride, Shane easily took home the Audience Favorite Award. In a special presentation, Manish received the first All Star Award for raising an astonishing amount of money and bringing at least 300 guests to the party, but the biggest prize of the night went to Safe Haven Family Shelter. Success on the Runway Friends & Fashion has a blockbuster year
F
riends & Fashion, the wildly popular event benefiting Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, has grown by leaps and bounds over the past few years. A record-shattering 1,100 supporters came to the Music City Center for the 28th annual event, which is hosted by the Friends of Children’s Hospital. Judy Simmons, a Friends member since the 1970s, was this year’s honorary chair. Co-chairs Allison Fowler, Mary Morgan Ketchel and Carissa Pereira kept the “Momosas” flowing so that everyone could make the most of pre-show silent auction and shopping. People snapped up clothing from popular stores in The Mall at Green Hills — Gus Mayer, Lilly Pulitzer and Macy’s — that also provided the models’ attire. A selection of items from The Friends Shop, the fabulous boutique located inside the children’s hospital, was brought in as well. Amid all the excited chatter, rumors buzzed that Pekka Rinne and a couple of his teammates might be showing up. That was enough to get everyone into their seats — after casually wandering past the Predators table, of course. Practice came first for the players, and the team was represented by Kristen Laviolette, wife of head coach Peter Laviolette, and Erika Parkko, Pekka’s girlfriend. ACM Award winner Lauren Alaina performed, and Elisabeth Hasselbeck emceed the fashion show, with professional models showing the latest spring looks. However, the real stars of the show were the smiling and inspiring young patients who walked the runway. The children, ranging from age 5 to 18, represented the 1,700 patients seen every day at the children’s hospital. “Three of my five children have been hospital patients and understand the purpose of walking the runway to help raise funds for the place that has impacted their lives,” said Carissa. Those three strutted the catwalk like pros. Friends of Children’s Hospital has been making a difference in the quality of children’s health since 1972. The record-setting amount of funds raised this year supports services for patients and their families as well as the hospital’s faculty and staff.

Taking Charge Reaching New Heights welcomes golfer Laura Baugh
A
nyone who was not familiar with Laura Baugh will certainly never forget her after Reaching New Heights. The engaging professional golfer and author of Out of the Rough: An Intimate Portrait of Laura Baugh and Her Sobering Journey shared her courageous story of recovery to a packed room at the annual luncheon, which benefits the Women’s Program at Cumberland Heights. Co-chairs Monica McDougall and Sally Nesbitt welcomed a crowd of familiar faces to Hillwood Country Club before the presentation of the Sheila Keeble Award. “I love getting to brag on my friend!” proclaimed Louise Mandrell as she handed the award to Janice Lovvorn, who has been involved with the organization for 22 years. Opening with “I’m Laura, and I’m definitely an alcoholic,” the guest speaker had the audience immersed in her tale that was honest, grim and, at times, amusing. Always a golfer, Laura was three years old when she won her first national Pee Wee Championship. She burst onto the national scene when she won the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship at 16 in 1971 and was named LPGA Rookie of the Year in 1973. At age 24, she had her first drink, and then “for years, I was always pregnant or drinking,” said the mother of seven children. It wasn’t until she nearly died from internal bleeding caused by heavy drinking that Laura was determined to quit. Now celebrating 22 years of sobriety, she zealously embraces her life, family and health. Since becoming sober, Laura has developed into a new kind of champion. She supports programs for abused women and for women in recovery. Her love of golf remains steadfast, and she helped establish the U.S. Senior Women’s Open with the inaugural championship to be played this July. After delivering such inspiring words at Reaching New Heights, Laura has a contingent of Nashville fans rooting for her in more ways than one.

Heart of the Matter Go Red for Women educates and empowers ladies
F
or the Go Red for Women Luncheon, co-chairs Saletta Holloway and Tracey Power pumped some new life into the event by switching the location from Music City Center to Marathon Music Works, a venue that felt more intimate and personal for the lively afternoon party. As always, the event — celebrating its 15th year — began with a wellness expo focused on full-body health to educate women. “It’s all about knowing your numbers,” Tracey said, referring to booths set up to help women better understand everything from their blood pressure to their cholesterol levels. Focused on overall health and wellness, the expo also offered women education about packing a healthy lunch, pointers on how to relax and tips on establishing a regular exercise routine. Macy’s was offering mini makeovers at a beauty bar, touching up makeup for ladies and painting lips a bright shade of red, the perfect complement to all of the red attire in the building. Meharry Medical Center operated a positive affirmation booth where women were encouraged to write thoughtful and supportive letters to their future selves and seal them in an envelope. The letters will be mailed at a later, unknown date to surprise the participants. “It’s like a hug to yourself in the mail,” said Meharry’s Majornette Jefferson. Instead of a keynote speaker, the luncheon featured a panel of three female physicians from Saint Thomas. Cardiologist Kelly Davis joined primary care physician Amy Neff and OB-GYN Connie Graves to discuss the importance of healthy living. A Q-and-A allowed women in the audience to ask questions and get a little free medical advice from the three doctors. All in all, it was an afternoon of education, encouragement and empowerment with just the right amount of heart.

A Grand Old Time Nashville Children’s Theatre launches a new grown-up fundraiser
W
hen the Nashville Children’s Theatre decided to add a new fundraiser to their roster, they sought to do something a bit more grown up. The always-popular Grand Day — a family-friendly carnival held every spring — was such a hit that the team launched Grand Night, an adults-only affair with a bit of Hollywood glam. “Grand Day is super successful. People dig it,” said NCT’s Steve Bianchi. “Grand Night was sort of a natural evolution of Grand Day — but more glamorous.” The team planned a Hollywood-themed night for the nearly 150 guests, held in the downtown theater. As the night began, party-goers, dressed in black-tie apparel, mingled and sipped cocktails in the lobby and rehearsal hall, making plenty of time to browse the substantial silent auction. Among the many items up for grabs were tickets to the Nashville Symphony, Preds packages, Disney World day passes and a collection of hand-cut, 3-D paper works of art from Vaclav Bicha depicting scenes from popular children’s stories like The Little Mermaid, Tuck Everlasting and Tomas and the Library Lady. The crowd packed onto the stage of Studio A where tables were draped with black tablecloths and topped with simple arrangements of red roses or oversized martini glasses overflowing with beads and feathers. Dream Events & Catering provided a three-course dinner, but the real treat came between servings. Tony-nominated Broadway singer Laura Osnes performed a selection of popular tunes in between each course, culminating with the “Midnight Princess Mega Medley,” a collection of Disney songs compiled by the actress. Following the music-packed dinner, guests enjoyed a music-packed after-party with dancing to The Nashville Blue Tones. Grand Night was grand indeed, and generous to boot, raising necessary scholarship funds to send local kids to week-long drama camps and advance an appreciation of theater across Middle Tennessee and beyond.

ason Wu’s first visit to Nashville was a short one, but he certainly left a lasting impression. Slated to headline the Symphony Fashion Show, the designer nearly didn’t make it here at all thanks to bad weather and canceled flights in New York, which caused him to miss the Monday night Patrons Party. Fortunately, he managed to arrive the next day in time for the main event, much to the delight of the enthusiastic crowd of 700. It was obvious from the looks of the lively cocktail hour that Jason already had an array of adoring fans in Music City. Many in attendance — from co-chairs Lorie Duke and Birgitta Williamson to Martha Ingram to the members of Little Big Town — were rocking Jason’s fabulous, feminine styles. And based on the evening’s forecast, it seems that Mother Nature herself might be a fashionista, gifting the Nashville Symphony with the most picture-perfect spring night for the festivities. Ladies flocked to the courtyard before the runway show to enjoy Champagne and cocktails — and a few small bites from Kristen Winston — while modeling their own chic ensembles and admiring others. It took quite a bit of coaxing to get everyone to their seats inside the Laura Turner Concert Hall, but once the fashion show began, all eyes were transfixed on the runway. Jason’s Fall 2018 collection, which recently debuted at New York Fashion Week, elicited spontaneous cheers and applause for its mix of stunning ball gowns, flirty frocks and sophisticated separates, all perfectly tailored and embellished with intricate detailing — like Swarovski crystals — in Jason’s signature style. Following the runway show, which was over far too soon, the audience was treated to a performance from two middle school musicians, oboist Angelina Bautista and bassoonist Xayvion Davidson, who served as reminder of the Nashville Symphony’s important education programs in the community. If Angelina looked familiar, it’s because she was surprised with a new oboe by Steven Tyler at last year’s Symphony Ball. Closing out the spectacular show was a three-song set from Little Big Town, who, outfitted in Jason’s designs, looked as amazing as they sounded on “Better Man,” “Can’t Go Back” and “Girl Crush.” Fortunately, there were still sips and snacks to be enjoyed at three separate after-parties and a trunk show the following day at Gus Mayer (with an appearance by Jason), keeping this fashionable party going long after the final look left the runway. by Nancy Floyd photographs by Eric England and Daniel Meigs continued on page 62

The Power of Fashion Symphony Fashion Show designer Jason Wu on his new collection, his unconventional career and his famous clients by Nancy Floyd photographs by Eric England and Daniel Meigs
F
ashion designer Jason Wu was only 26 years old — and two years into running his eponymous clothing line — when first lady Michelle Obama catapulted him to international fame by wearing one of his gowns at the 2009 inauguration ball. It was a career-defining moment for sure, but it also shifted the way Jason thought about the power of fashion. “Yes, we make beautiful clothes, but what we do can have a significant impact in many other ways,” he tells Nfocus. This spring, his designs made a significant impact in Nashville by helping to raise necessary funds for education programs at the Nashville Symphony. As the featured designer at the Symphony Fashion Show, Jason drew a crowd of 700 to the Schermerhorn Symphony Center for a runway show of his Fall 2018 collection. We sat down with the designer earlier that day to chat about his unconventional start in the industry, his favorite career moments and the best — and worst — trends in fashion. First of all, thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us. We’re excited for you to show your Fall 2018 collection at the Symphony Fashion Show. I want to talk about the collection first. What was your inspiration behind it? I was inspired by this architect, Ettore Sottsass, and his colorful work. He did a lot of work with jewelry. It’s all very colorful, very rich, and that’s kind of where I started with the original inspiration for the flowers. And there’s always a floral element in all my collections, and this season is no different. When you’re approaching a new collection, how do you tackle that challenge? It’s different every time. I think you just do what you feel like at the moment, and sometimes that feeling completely changes the week before the show. And then you change everything. I think it’s a reflection of things that inspire me at the moment and things I’ve seen, and that’s why I think traveling has been very important for me as a source of inspiration. Because I think getting to see different things all the time really helps. Is there a piece in this Fall 2018 collection that you really love? Yeah, the last gown I really love. It’s this very pleated, tulle drape gown that has these embroidered Swarovski crystals in these odd geometric shapes. So it’s something that’s quite modern but really quite classically beautiful at the same time. I really love that dress. I love that dress too. It’s really pretty. Let’s talk about your start in fashion. You had an unconventional start. Your background is in designing
doll clothes, and I sort of got the sense from reading your story that you really had to hustle and work hard. You didn’t have anybody in the fashion industry that was necessarily opening doors for you. What have you learned from that process, and how has it made you a better designer and a better businessman? I think having a start designing toys gave me a basis on how to work in the business. For example, how to register toy names and how to file patents and all these copyright things, you know, those things that you don’t think of when you start, when you’re a budding fashion designer. But I actually learned that before when I was working at the toy company. It’s just things like that. It gave me a really good base on what it’s like to be in a workplace, to work with others, the idea of collaboration and to really see the 360 degrees of a business — from design to production, to shipping, to all of that. So that really prepared me a lot more than I thought and more than I ever imagined when I started my business. There were just things that I instinctively knew to start, so that was really a big part of that. What that taught me also was just to follow my instincts and to do something even if no one has done it or it doesn’t seem conventional. You kind of create your own box, and you kind of go with that, and that’s really been the mantra for my career — to try different things; don’t mind being the first. How has your style and your approach to business changed as you’ve gotten older and more established in your career? Well, I think my work has always been very feminine, very sophisticated. The clothes have gotten more refined over the years. I’m obsessed with techniques, fabrics, craftsmanship; those are the most important things to me. When I continued on page 72

started, we didn’t have any sewers. We had to make everything out in factories, and now we have our own atelier, and I think the craftsmanship that we are able to get out of our atelier in New York is really incredible — really stunning pieces that are made as beautiful inside as out.
What part of your job still gets you the most excited? I think when I’m designing a collection and fitting a garment and it’s just the way [I] imagined when it comes out. That is the moment when you say, “That’s why I do what I do.”
You were still a really young designer when first lady Michelle Obama wore one of your gowns to the inauguration ball in 2009. How do you think that changed the trajectory of your career? It changed everything because having done something like that — I think the women’s industry knew me, but having dressed the first lady really catapulted my name to an international platform. That was something that kind of just happened quite literally overnight with that kind of reaction, that everybody knew who I was all of a sudden. I had been doing it for a while — contrary to the popular belief that I had just started like the day before. I had been doing it for a few years, and I was fortunate because, by then, I was in the right stores; I had already been familiar with the industry, so it kind of prepared me to take it a step further after that.
What is, in your opinion, the best piece of fashion advice you could give to a person? Never take trends too literally, and always stick with your personality. Nobody can do “you” better than you.
How did you feel when you got that news? When you heard that she was going to be wearing your gown? I didn’t hear; I saw. I mean, I saw it on TV when she came out. I don’t know. It’s hard to describe that feeling. I’ve never been able to really capture it with words because it’s something that just felt like something so incredible has happened in front of your own eyes and you are all of a sudden a part of it. And I moved to America as a Taiwanese-Canadian person coming in wanting to make a name for myself as a fashion designer, so then to have done something that has real significant value in American history was something that was beyond my wildest imaginations. It’s not something you really put on your goals. You know what I mean? It’s like, “I want to be in a fashion magazine; I want to do fashion shows; I want to be in Bergdorf ” … things like that. But it also really changed the way I saw things. I realized that fashion can be so much more; it can be a message. And yes, we make beautiful clothes, but what we do can have a significant impact in many other ways, and that’s how it really showed me a bigger world, I guess, a broader one.
If you had to boil it down to one or two things that people get wrong when it comes to fashion, what do you think that would be? Over-accessorizing. There’s a lot of that, and I think there is such a thing as too much, and this is coming from someone who loves Dynasty. But even then, there was a certain drama with the outfits that is fabulous. But I think, don’t pile it on. Given the cyclical nature of fashion, is there a certain trend that you would love to see make a comeback from the past? Not that it ever went away, but I think certainly, at the moment, not the most talked about is beauty. Right now, fashion is not so much about beauty. It’s a very “look at me” moment. But I love beauty.

So obviously that was a big moment in your career, but you’ve had a lot of other really incredible clients that you’ve dressed like Reese Witherspoon, Diane Kruger and Kerry Washington to name a few. I won’t ask you to pick a favorite, but are there specific moments or garments that stand out in your mind for being really significant or ones that you just really loved because of the process behind them? I would say Diane Kruger at the SAG Awards. She wore this mustard yellow gown, and that was the second time we had collaborated, and she’s now one of my dearest friends. But that was maybe eight years ago, and … we didn’t get to do a fitting in person; we texted each other and did it by email sketches, so it was something that just kind of came together. It was really one of my all-time favorite, favorite looks that I’ve ever done for the red carpet.
What do you mean by that? My favorite era is the ’50s, with that glamour and the beauty of that. And that’s what I miss. It’s just a very loud moment in fashion, and I like things that are a little more elegant and a little more subtle at times. And you know, it will never go away, but it certainly isn’t what’s in fashion right now. Well you’re doing a good job of bringing that back. I mean, I just do what I do. My clients love it. It’s what I know how to do. And again, it’s not about me chasing trends, especially not after 10 years in business. What’s a trend that you wish would go away and never come back? Oh, my God, there are so many. There are a lot of logos right now …
So we have a growing fashion industry here in Nashville — I don’t know if you are familiar with that at all — but what advice would you give to aspiring or up-and-coming fashion designers, ones that are coming into the industry now? I think nowadays it doesn’t matter where you’re from or where you are. Through social media, and in this digital age, your work can reach so many more people just from your phone than it’s ever been [able to] before. So it’s something really to be taken advantage of because it’s free; it doesn’t cost money. I can’t tell you the kind of people I discover daily on Instagram — different talented people that do things, and I think, “Oh I didn’t know about this person and wouldn’t have.”

I remember that look, actually. It was gorgeous. Who would be a dream client for you to work with someday? I would love to work with Tilda Swinton. I think she is such a chameleon and so incredibly chic in the way she dresses — but also in her demeanor. She’s an original, I think; there’s no one like her, and I’m really attracted to that.
What do you think you would be doing if you hadn’t become a fashion designer? I never really thought of that, to be honest with you. But I think I would still be in a creative field. I think cooking or something. I think I would be in the culinary world. Nice! Are you a good cook? I think I’m OK. I love doing it. It’s really great. I’m a home cook, but, I mean, I love it. I think it’s really creative, and I really have a lot of fun. It brings me a lot of joy.
Do you think that there’s a threat of that oversaturating the industry? I guess that goes with everything. But yet without that opportunity, a lot of voices wouldn’t be heard otherwise. So I think you have to kind of be your own editor. But I think that’s something that’s really interesting right now, that people are their own editors a little bit. They edit what they like. There’s less of a universal trend. The Symphony Fashion Show obviously benefits our Nashville Symphony, and we are all so grateful to you for coming and participating in this. It’s such an important part of our community, and events like these provide necessary funding for its programs. What are the causes and charities that are most important to you? I’m on the board of ACRIA, which now just merged with GMHC, so its Gay Men’s Health Crisis; it’s an AIDS organization that I have been a part of for many years. I’ve worked with them for six years, I think, on different fundraising opportunities, bringing awareness and education. So that’s nice. It’s something that’s really been a great project.

Nashville may be lacking an ocean, but that’s not stopping developer and interior designer Branan White from bringing beach inspiration to Music City. For his newest project — a gated, four-home community on the edge of Green Hills known as The Ridge at Granny White — Branan used the posh 30A community Alys Beach as his muse. All four homes have white painted-brick exteriors and light-filled interiors, creating a fresh, modern aesthetic reminiscent of the luxe seaside community. He puts thoughtful care into designing floor plans that give people what they really want and need. What Johnny Megale has created at 207 Third Ave. N. is a far cry from a facelift. He spared no expense in this multi-million-dollar renovation, and the craftsmanship is truly remarkable, as evidenced through touches like the Namibian marble countertops, a floating staircase with a walnut handrail and waterfall detail, and a coat closet with a view into the original 1914 Otis elevator, which has been wallpapered and lit and feels like an art piece all on its own. The 2,716-square-foot residence is located in an eight-dwelling building off Printers Alley, and once you step through the front door, you’re greeted by a large living area with sweeping 20-foot ceilings and exposed beams. Interior designer Mark Simmons and his wife, Sissy, an adjunct professor in the fashion and design department at Lipscomb University, love a challenge. So two years ago, when the couple first looked at the red brick midcentury modern house on Brook Hollow Road in West Meade that had barely been touched since the 1960s, they knew they had found their next project. “If it had already been done, we probably wouldn’t have been interested in it,” says Mark, who was drawn to the space — 5,400 square feet spread out on one level — and a 2-acre lot. After an extensive renovation, the house has been completely redone, save for a lone light fixture, a few knobs and the classic front doors with circular glass insets that speak to the time period. The exterior is now painted a creamy white, and a front porch has been added. The Simmons rewired the house, raised ceilings, knocked out walls and added windows. They ripped up flooring — a hodgepodge of tile, stone, carpet and wood — and added wide-plank walnut floors throughout. In the

sunken dining room, which accommodates a 12-foot-long glass table, a row of windows looks out onto the front yard, which is dotted with Bradford pear trees. In addition to four bedrooms, three full baths and a half-bath, the house boasts a library, den, several sitting areas and a massive chef ’s kitchen with Cambria white marble countertops, pale greengray cabinets and a wall of windows revealing a covered patio with a fireplace. The 1918 English Cotswold-style home in Belle Meade owned by interior designer Jeff Adkisson and his wife, Sharon, was affectionately dubbed the “homework house” years ago by a child in the neighborhood who thought the many windows, with light streaming in, would make the house the perfect place to study. Not surprisingly, Jeff considers “bringing the outside in” a mainstay of his design philosophy. As guests walk in the front door, they are immediately greeted by a staircase with a brass railing and three skylights, which are “great for seeing stars, comets and the eclipse,” says Jeff. When he and Sharon first bought the house 30 years ago, they embarked on a major renovation with the help of architect J. Terry Bates. They opened up rooms by knocking down walls and added architectural detail by putting transoms above windows and doors. They kept the character of the house as evidenced by the clipped corners in the upstairs guestroom, which makes the room feel as though it’s right out of a storybook cottage. “This is an aha house,” says Jeff. “Children love it.” One of the many highlights of the house is the addition of a wow-worthy master bath, complete with a sitting area, vanity and massive stone fireplace, all accented by large windows, which look out on the beautiful yard and gardens. “In the winter, “ says Jeff, “it’s like Doctor Zhivago in here,” referring to the classic movie’s snowy, wintry scenes.

Hannah Claybrook and Reed Gibbs met through mutual friends at a Nashville Predators game during Thanksgiving break in 2012. Reed proposed in December 2016 while he and Hannah were walking their dog, Maverick, on the Steeplechase grounds at Percy Warner Park. “No one was in the park at the time,” said Hannah, “so it was very sweet and intimate.” The wedding took place in January 2018 in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. The weekend kicked off with a Thursday night welcoming reception on the rooftop of the Rosewood Hotel. Friday morning, guests rode out early on horseback to tour the canyons of Central Mexico. “We rounded out our ride with a traditional Mexican picnic and beer,” said Hannah. After the rehearsal, the groom’s family
hosted a festive Mexican dinner at Hotel Nena. The ceremony was held Saturday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Ernest Townsend officiating the mid-morning service. Hannah and Reed wanted to incorporate a bit of local culture, so they included a “lasso” ceremony. Their mothers wrapped the couple in a floral garland to signify the gift of eternity and everlasting love. The bride’s lace trumpet-style gown and the groom’s custom blue tuxedo were both designed by Olia Zavozina. The groom wore black velvet smoking slippers and Día de Los Muertos skull cuff links. Following the ceremony, the wedding party and guests paraded through the streets, led by a mariachi band and accompanied by a donkey. They
enjoyed a six-course luncheon in the garden at Casa Hyder served with palomas, cava and rompope, a traditional Mexican liquor made by local nuns. After a siesta, guests gathered back at Casa Hyder for a festive fiesta where they danced on a clear acrylic dance floor covering the pool to the music of Pilaseca. The bride is a graduate of Harpeth Hall and University of Colorado. The groom is an alumnus of Brentwood Academy and Auburn University. Their parents are John Dixon and Cammie Cheek Claybrook and James Melton and Tammy Gallagher Gibbs, all of Nashville.

Up for Grabs A friend of mine and her husband just hosted a huge cocktail party at their home to celebrate their 50th anniversary. I called her a couple days later to tell her thank you, but she was concerned. She collects Limoges boxes and little animals and has them all over her house, but now she’s sure she’s missing a piece. She’s confident that someone took it. I didn’t say anything, but I’m sure I know where it went. A guest brought along a friend, whom I saw picking the piece up, and I’m pretty sure it went into her purse. I don’t know what to do. Should I tell the hostess, or should I speak to the guest who brought the woman along? I’d never met her before, but I’m pretty sure I’m right. —Anonymous, Green Hills As a witness, your testimony wouldn’t stand up in court. Admiring a person’s porcelain is hardly criminal. The hostess keeps her collection on display, with a good chance that she’ll be tempting a potential pickpocket. Anyone could pick up a box and pocket it, easily. You didn’t see anything slipped into anyone’s pocketbook. Was the newcomer — aka the uninvited guest — carrying a purse around? She surely needed a free hand for a drink and a plate of canapés. You saw her handling the goods, which seem to have been getting hotter by the moment, but the evidence against her is slender. On the other hand, you do have a right to run your story by the lady who brought along the as-yet-to-be-accused. But it’s not your responsibility, so carefully consider the rumor you’ll be spreading. Your hostess obviously keeps count of her collection. You might want to keep your story to yourself — or suggest that she install a metal detector at the door.
Damp With Grief A friend who loves her dogs brought one along for coffee at my house. She always lets her dogs run free, and while we were in the kitchen, the dog had to “go” and went on the carpet in the dining room. The dog was old, so my friend seemed more concerned about her than about the rug. Because of the dog’s age, I didn’t say anything, but the stain has gotten worse and worse. The dog died the next week, and the owner is heartbroken. But I think she should pay for the clean-up. How long do I have to wait before I tell her? — Anonymous, Brentwood Call the carpet cleaner right now before your friend comes back for return coffee and has to step around the stains. They’re only going to get worse, as is your relationship. The sight will cause her great pain, bringing back memories of Frippy leaping merrily across your Orientals, with a little pause, every so often. (If you’re going to stay friends, I suggest that you keep a leash in the hall closet.) Share your condolences; then go right ahead and mention the clean-up bill. Maybe she’ll pick up her share. It doesn’t sound, however, as if she’s good at picking up very much.

What’s Old is New Again Some key elements of the previously named Thistle Stop Café, such as the salvaged wood floors, were repurposed — in this case as banquettes. “We wanted to preserve and honor some of the things people loved about the cafe,” says Hal, “but elevate it to the point where it was flexible — whether it’s one person who plugs their laptop in at the bar and works for a few hours or a tea party for 12. We can do it all now, and it’s pretty cool.”

Thistle Farms, a nonprofit that offers hope and healing to survivors of sex trafficking and addiction, is all about new beginnings. So it is only fitting that its cafe should also have a second chapter. The previous incarnation of the newly named The Café at Thistle Farms was “early attic,” says CEO Hal Cato. Everything was donated, from the uneven boards that made up the wood flooring to the tables and chairs. “We had a little camper sink, no dishwasher and a bunch of appliances plugged into the wall,” says Hal. But even back then, the cafe — staffed by women in the program — was an instant hit. Sandwiches were brought in daily because there wasn’t even a kitchen. Yet, within the first month, there were lines out the door. “It was a whole story of people wanting to be supportive and of the community coming together to make it successful,” says Courtney Sobieralski, director of cafe services. In recent years, the building, which had been donated to Thistle Farms, was showing its age. By Christmas Eve of 2016, Courtney called Hal to say the roof was caving in. They closed the building — which also housed the event space, administration offices and retail shop — for an eight-month, down-to-the-studs renovation. Hastings Architecture Associates, in conjunction with McAlpine House interiors, oversaw the project. The result is what Hal calls “modern farmhouse.“ The 3,300-square-foot cafe seats 96 customers inside and 25 on the patio. It now employs 17 women, tripling the number of employees since the renovation. by Whitney Clay

Grab-and-go sandwiches were elevated by the addition of a panini grill and — since the renovation — a full-fledged commercial kitchen. “What [the original cafe] did was proved the concept that people wanted a space to gather where they could just bathe in the mission a little bit and have a fun place to meet a friend,” says Hal. Lunch entrées now include butternut squash lasagna and chicken and dumplings. Grilled salmon with a dill sauce, basmati rice and roasted vegetables was a recent special.
A newly designed gift shop, adjacent to the cafe, sells Thistle Farms’ well-known bath and body products, scented soy candles, select apparel such as sweatshirts and T-shirts, and a large assortment of products produced by their international partners, including leather goods and jewelry. One noteworthy collaboration is with I Am You, a social enterprise where women refugees at the Ritsona camp in Greece weave welcome mats that include the fabric from life vests worn on their journey. Echoing Thistle Farms’ motto, Love Heals, the project is called Love Welcomes.
The organization was founded in 1997 by the Rev. Becca Stevens with the goal of offering housing and an opportunity for education and employment to survivors of trafficking and addiction. What started with a handful of women mixing up bath salts at St. Augustine’s Chapel has grown to a multi-million-dollara-year enterprise. The wide range of bath and beauty products are carried in stores throughout the country, including all the Whole Body stores. Hal predicts revenues will top $3 million in 2018.

Two Little Words A Mother’s Day request

Mother’s Day is coming up, and I don’t want flowers or a massage. I don’t want homemade cards (though I will accept them with an overflowing heart). I don’t even want breakfast in bed. What I want is “yes ma’am.” Children have a place of prominence in Western culture that seems unparalleled in history, though I haven’t exactly researched that to know for sure. Their safety has long been important, but their voices never so heard, their needs never so explored, their desires never so met. The prioritization of children is not bad, but by democratizing our homes, I believe we are denying our children the valuable experience of standing under authority. The irony of it all is that we moms tend to feel guilty for the way we behave — while our kids don’t feel guilty at all for the way they misbehave. I am seeing this a lot. Two weeks ago, I ran into a friend who was so overcome with mom-guilt that she was tempted to drive to her daughter’s school to apologize for “shaming” her at breakfast. Then last week, another friend told me she regretted “shaming” her son for putting his dirty feet in a bowl they eat out of. I empathize with these well-meaning women. They are good moms and amazing people, but the more I hear comments like these and the more I witness the brazen lack of respect of my own kids, I find myself wanting to say — actually, wanting to yell (without any mom-guilt whatsoever for yelling) — WE HAVE ALL LOST OUR EVER-LOVING MINDS!
Sometimes, we need to say we’re sorry to our kids. We need to show them that we all make mistakes, that we can atone for them, that we are still loved. All good. But sometimes we need to say “too bad.” Without explanation, negotiation or discussion of any kind. “You don’t like it? Too bad.” And yet, society frowns on that. As a mom, I feel like I’m told that saying “too bad” is too mean. Saying “deal with it” is unsympathetic. Saying “because I said so” is demoralizing. What are we expected to say instead? “Sweetie, I understand that cleaning your room is not your favorite thing to do, but Mommy has asked that you take responsibility for your things, and it’s important that you learn self-reliance and a sense of independence, and once you have picked up your things — and I will help you — you may have a treat because you have done such an amazing job…” Seriously? In our quest to raise independentminded, confident creatures, have we instead created ungrateful monsters? Where is the line between empowerment and entitlement in all this? And, why are we the ones who always feel guilty? I very much want my children to be independent-minded, confident creatures. But, I also want them to be thoughtful and respectful, aware of their limitations and eager to listen. To that end, this Mother’s Day I am going to give myself a gift, which is to both relish adoration and also demand respect. I plan to accept homemade cards with joy and to expect “yes ma’am” without guilt. And if they don’t like it? Too bad.

A Fashionable Affair 1993
Before the Symphony Fashion Show brought well-known designers to town for its annual event, personal appearances by couturiers were more sporadic. Bill Blass, one of the most famous of the 20th century, arrived with his elegant spring collection for a trunk show at Jamie in November 1993. Knowing he was a favorite of New York Cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s socially prominent women, Nashvillians treated Bill to the very best Southern hospitality. Jamie Stream planned a tony luncheon during the sneak peek of the chic clothes at her eponymous store, and Alyne Massey hosted an intimate dinner party in her Belle Meade home. Of course, Nfocus was invited to capture photographs of the storied designer with some of Nashvilleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best-dressed ladies.
