The state’s FIRST astigmatism SMILE® procedure (small-incision laser vision correction)

T

he state’s first astigmatism treatment using the new SMILE® procedure (small-incision laser vision correction) was successfully performed on Wednesday, October 24, 2018 in Nashville, T.N. at Wang Vision 3D Cataract & LASIK Center. Dr. Ming Wang, MD, PhD, performed this surgery. SMILE® is a major advancement in laser vision correction in the last 25 years. Compared with LASIK, SMILE® has three dis-

tinct advantages. SMILE® is performed with a smaller incision. This surgery causes less dry eyes and less postoperative complications. Recently, the United States Food and Drug Administration approved the astigmatism correction using SMILE®. “This is an exciting development. This means that a much larger group of our patients will be able to benefit from SMILE® and be freed from their dependence on glasses and contacts,” Dr. Wang explained.

Mr. Ross Ronan is a 47 year old healthcare executive. All of his life, he had suffered from poor vision. Mr. Ronan had a high degree of nearsightedness and astigmatism. This distorted his vision. Without correction, his vision was worse than being legally blind. Mr. Ronan said that he was truly excited to be the first patient in the state to receive the new and stateof-the-art astigmatism SMILE® procedure! Dr. Wang is a Harvard & MIT graduate (MD, magna cum laude) and one of the few laser eye surgeons in the world today who holds a doctorate degree in laser physics. He has performed over 55,000 procedures, including on over 4,000 physicians. He has published nine textbooks and many scientific papers including one in the world-renowned journal “Nature”. Dr. Wang holds several U.S. patents and performed the world’s first laser artificial cornea implantation. He is currently the only surgeon in the state who performs 3D SMILE® and LASIK (18+), 3D Implantable Contact Lens (21+), 3D Forever Young Lens (45+), and 3D Laser Cataract Surgery (60+). Dr. Wang established a nonprofit charity which to date has helped patients from over 40 states in the U.S. and 55 countries. All sight restoration surgeries were performed free-of-charge. For more information, visit www.wangcataractLASIK.com, call 615-321-8881, or email Dr. Wang at drwang@wangvisioninstitute.com. SPRING TRUNK SHOW THURSDAY, MAY 9TH FRIDAY, MAY 10TH

4121 HILLSBORO PIKE, NASHVILLE KINGS1912.COM | 615.724.5464

Welcome home! It’s May, which means it’s time for our annual Homes of Distinction issue. Not surprisingly, finding beautiful homes to spotlight wasn’t difficult. The hardest part was narrowing down the list to the seven stunners we selected. Flip to page 90 to view this year’s featured Homes of Distinction. Our list includes everything from a phenomenal urban penthouse to a home on the National Register of Historic Places. Whether you’re in the market for a new house or simply enjoy admiring the unique properties that our ever-growing city has to offer, you’ll love sneaking a peek at these seven beauties. The May issue also means more party coverage than you can keep up with. (We can barely keep up with it ourselves!) This issue is packed with

photos from 25 memorable events — and that only got us through the second week of April. Some events celebrated major milestones this year, like Dancing for Safe Haven (page 33), which toasted 35 years of the nonprofit, and Power of the Purse (page 62), which commemorated 25 years of serving women and girls in Middle Tennessee. There have also been appearances by fantastic special guests. Little Big Town helped raise funds for Boys & Girls Clubs at the Great Futures Gala (page 64), former Miss USA Tara Conner spoke at Reaching New Heights (page 50), and National Geographic photographer Joel Sartore visited the zoo (page 53). There are more special guests and fabulous parties in store, and you can read about them all in Nfocus. BY NaNcY FloYd

behind the scenes

Kem Hinton In addition to being a highly respected, award-winning architect, Kem Hinton is an author, historian, graphic designer, photographer, lecturer and visual artist. A co-founder of Tuck-Hinton Architecture & Design, this Renaissance man is responsible for some of the area’s most exceptional structures. He served as lead designer of Nashville’s Bicentennial Capitol Mall, and his projects include the Vanderbilt University Undergraduate Admissions building, Tennessee World War II Memorial, Civil Rights Room in the Nashville Public Library, TSU Campus Center, Cumberland Valley Girl Scout Center and noteworthy private residences. After passing ownership of the firm to the next generation, Kem is not slowing down. Under the name Kem Hinton Design, he is the lead designer of multiple upcoming projects — notably Tennessee State Library and Archives, Tennessee Gulf War Memorial, Wings of Liberty Museum at Fort Campbell and Votes for Women Room at the Nashville Public Library. by Holly Hoffman photograph by Daniel Meigs

When you have out-of-town guests visiting, where do you take them? Frist Art Museum, Country Music Hall of Fame, State Capitol, Tennessee World War II Memorial and big granite map at the mall and then Centennial Park What’s one of the first buildings you designed in Nashville? Renovation/expansion of Deepwood, for Connie and Tom Cigarran. This white International Style house was designed in 1936 by the preeminent architect Edwin Keeble. He later designed Nashville’s finest skyscraper, the L&C Tower. What’s an interesting fact most people don’t know about Bicentennial Mall? Not a fact, but hilarious: the idea promoted by “historian” William Henry that the mall was inspired by — and is a copy of — the mythic Hindu temple Mount Meru. I’m not making this up. What’s your favorite historic building in Nashville? The Parthenon. Incredible. As a LEED accredited professional, what do you feel is the greatest challenge when it comes to designing for environmental sustainability? Receiving the full commitment of the client(s) to do the right thing Who or what inspires you? The memory of my parents Nora and T. Earl Hinton

What’s your favorite place to go for dinner? Any place run by Tom Morales Where do you like to go for cocktails? Any place with Robert Hicks, Bill King or Keel Hunt

The Basics

Name: Kem Hinton Profession/Title: Architect Hometown: Born in Nashville, raised in Murfreesboro Zip code: 37221 Number of years in Nashville: 42 Weight of granite globe in Tennessee World War II Memorial: 8 tons

What’s your favorite local event? Symphony and rock concerts. The recent “Get the Led Out” at War Memorial Auditorium was fabulous! What’s the best place in town to bike, hike or picnic? Warner Parks As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? Designer of futuristic cars What three people would you love to have as guests at a dinner party? Elon Musk, Denise Scott Brown and Henry Louis Gates Jr. What’s the one thing you hope never changes in Nashville? The city’s appreciation of its past and a commitment to preserve its historic structures, places and landscapes.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? From architect Robert Venturi in 1981: “Keep original or keep thinking until it is. ... Be careful with your ideas; some may be stolen. ... Speak for the little guy ... and honor the past while striving for the future. More is not less.”

The First and the Worst anyone who attended the fifth annual The First and the Worst at City Winery can attest that it was an unforgettable night of music. This year, Kix Brooks joined Desmond Child, Luke Dick, Jamie Floyd and Laura Veltz to entertain a packed house with their first and worst efforts, biggest hits and the stories behind them. Since it began, the event has raised more than $500,000 to “heal the music” and benefit Music Health Alliance, which provides free health care support and advocacy to music industry professionals. by Holly Hoffman photographs by Eric England

The beloved fundraiser, which is in its eighth year, feathered a new nest this time around at The Bedford, a multispace venue in Berry Hill. Light bites and cocktails were provided by Bacon & Caviar, including Creole shrimp canapés, multiple kinds of bruschetta and Peeps cupcakes, and revelers were drawn to the silent auction, which featured enticing items such as a pair of Gucci sunglasses from Select Shades. Couture Construction Dillard’s at The Mall at Green Hills provided an after-hours evening of fashion and fun for more than 300 women at the seventh annual Couture Construction. Taking a break from shopping, attendees cheered on the Groundbreakers — 12 accomplished women making a difference in our community — who modeled the latest spring fashions. One hundred percent of the proceeds went toward the construction of what will be the 12th home completed by Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build, a partnership of female community leaders who sponsor, build and dedicate a house for a female homeowner. by Holly Hoffman photographs by Daniel Meigs

Clare Armistead’s 90th Birthday Celebration The incomparable clare Armistead turned 90 this year, and it seems that the entire city has had cause to celebrate. Friends of Warner Parks, which was cofounded by Clare in 1987, got in on the festivities, hosting a lovely al fresco celebration for the woman of the hour at Percy Warner Park. Friends new and old lined up to wish her well as they enjoyed libations and hors d’œuvres from Bacon & Caviar. The event also served as a kick-off for a new capital campaign to restore the limestone steps at the Belle Meade Boulevard entrance to the park. The evening was a great reminder of all the ways that Clare has added grace and beauty to the city of Nashville. by NaNcy Floyd photographs by Eric England

NASHVILLE

For their annual Spring Gathering, Tennessee Region Tiffany Circle members, their spouses and guests met at the home of Maxine and Frank Majors. While enjoying bites from Kristen Winston Catering, everyone made a point to welcome speaker Brad Kieserman, vice president for disaster operations and logistics for the American Red Cross. In response to recent historic disasters, these benevolent ladies have already funded two next-generation Emergency Response Vehicles. After his talk, Brad presented Barbara Bovender with the keys to a new ERV, which everyone had a chance to tour. by Holly HoFFmaN photographs by Eric England continued on page 28

Nashville Rep Season Announcement nashville rep recently wrapped up another successful season — which critics called its best ever! — so there was an extra level of excitement in the air as supporters gathered at Cabana for the company’s 2019-2020 season announcement. Artistic Director René Copeland presented the roster of six shows to the delighted cheers of the crowd. The season will kick off with the hilarious and fast-paced Urinetown. Soon after will come Pipeline and Every Brilliant Thing followed by the classic A Christmas Carol just in time for the holiday season. This Red Planet will start off the new year, and A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams will wrap up the Nashville Rep’s 35th season. by Lauren Langston stewart photographs by Daniel Meigs

the gordon Jewish Community Center kicked off their weekend art show, Art on the West Side, with a lively Saturday night cocktail reception. Co-chaired by Cindee Gold and Suzy Perlman, the show featured the works of more than 40 fine artists in a variety of mediums with a portion of proceeds benefiting the GJCC. Everyone was thrilled to get a peek at the collection of this year’s featured artist, Paul Harmon, a locally based but internationally recognized talent. Art on the West Side concluded on Sunday with a jazz brunch and an open marketplace, continuing to raise valuable funds for the GJCC’s recreational, educational, social and cultural programs and services. by nancy FLoyd photographs by Daniel Meigs

Homecoming Dancing for Safe Haven celebrates 10th anniversary

ancing for Safe Haven is always a rollicking good time, but there was extra reason to cut a rug this year. The event — which pairs local celebs with professional dancers — was celebrating its 10th anniversary. Even more impressive, 2019 marks the 35th anniversary of Safe Haven and the life-changing work the organization provides for homeless families in Nashville. The event sold out weeks in advance, and the cocktail party at the Hilton was shoulder-to-shoulder with guests eager to see the dancers take the floor. Executive Director Joyce Lavery, who is also celebrating 10 years with the organization, was thrilled by the turnout but even more excited about the growing reach of the nonprofit. In its first year of operation, Safe Haven served 35 families. This year, they’re on track to serve 200. The organization also launched prevention programs in the fall of 2018. “We know we’re keeping families from entering homelessness,” Joyce said. That’s certainly cause for celebration, and celebrating everyone did. The festivities kicked off with a lively group number to a medley from Grease. Joined by professional dancers from Nashville Ballroom & Company, co-chairs Kyle Allen and Ken Williamson donned leather jackets as they danced to “Greased Lightnin’,” while fellow chair Karen Hingtgen was outfitted as Sandy for “You’re the One That I Want.” When “We Go Together” came on, the gang was joined by past event winners dressed as Pink Ladies and T-Birds, waving pennants from the year of their victory. It set a high bar for this year’s performances, but the class of 2019 delivered, performing everything from a tango to the hustle. The judges crowned Cupcake Collection’s Mignon Francois the winner for her sassy hip-hop number with Michael Hosale. The Fundraising Favorite went to Scott Breece, who danced an East Coast Swing with Juanita Simanekova, while the Audience Favorite award went to Becky Harris, whose son, country artist Chris Young, was front and center in the crowd for her tango. The real winner of the evening was Safe Haven, which has raised more than $2 million through this unforgettable event. by Nancy Floyd photographs by Eric England and Steve Lowry continued on page 34

Down to a Fine Art Celebrating French art at the Frist Gala Patrons Party

A

s the Frist Gala drew nearer, an intimate group of 120 patrons convened at the art museum after hours for a private dinner party. The main attraction of the Patrons Party, of course, was the Frist’s featured exhibit, Van Gogh, Monet, Degas, and Their Times: The Mellon Collection of French Art, the theme and centerpiece of this year’s gala. Guests meandered through the Ingram Gallery during the cocktail hour, enjoying their private tour of this vast and impressive collection of 19th and early 20th century art from some of the most prolific artists of the day. The collection, organized by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, focuses mainly on impressionism but features a range of styles, including romanticism and cubism. In addition to Van Gogh, Monet and Degas, the exhibit includes works from Renoir, Picasso, Seurat and Rousseau, among others. Given the breadth of the collection, Hugh Howser, who is the event planner behind both the Frist Gala and the Patrons Party, had much inspiration to draw from. Deciding to focus on a French theme for the gala itself, he chose to highlight the equestrian art that opens the exhibit at the Patrons Party. “We’re calling this elegant equestrian,” he said, gesturing around the handsomely appointed dining room set up in the auditorium. “It’s English countryside meets Broadway.” The Tulip Tree prepared richly textured, earthy arrangements consisting of hydrangeas, roses, orchids, hypericum berries and lamb’s ears to sit atop navy shantung tablecloths draped with a lace overlay. Farm tables were interspersed throughout the room to add a laid-back air to the festivities. Equestrian prints in navy frames from Hugh’s own collection hung around the room, completing the tailored look. Frist Gala co-chairs Susanne Cato and Kathleen Estes shared the night with their army of faithful and hardworking hosts: Kathryn and David Brown, Edie and David Johnson, Jennie and Rob McCabe, Julie and Bob Gordon, and Barby and Govan White. It was a night to celebrate the city’s beloved art museum, and it included just a hint at the elegance awaiting at the gala itself.

Shazam! A super night at the Interfaith Dental Clinic Gala Trisha and John Teitenberg

F

or 25 years, the Interfaith Dental Clinic has been saving smiles by providing affordable dental care for low-income families and the elderly. So when planning its annual themed fundraiser, organizers drew inspiration from another group that protects the public and saves them from harm: superheroes. A league of extraordinary co-chairs — Caleb King, Kathy Hall, Doug Hunter, Raj Kshatri, Latresa Jackson and Russell Mack — provided an action-packed evening to celebrate this milestone year. Although not one of the Caped Crusaders arrived at Rocketown in a Batmobile, guests wholeheartedly embraced the theme and used supernatural skills to create costumes, makeup and props to emulate their favorite champions. Two masked couples — Bruce Wayne with Vicki Vale in formal attire and a suave Green Hornet with mini-skirted Kato — made dashing additions to the party. More than one Superman, Wonder Woman and Supergirl were spotted; even The Tick made an appearance. But without a doubt, the most popular crime-fighters were The Incredibles. Those trademark red suits were everywhere, proving just how incredible the movie franchise is. Everyone spent the cocktail hour admiring one another’s disguises, guessing who was behind the masks, perusing the silent auction and taking chances for a prize at the Hulk Punch Game. Supervillains Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn passed cleverly named appetizers like Kryptonite Bites (spinach and goat cheese on crostini), and bartenders in capes poured The Joker, a purple-hued cocktail with a kick. From the Aquaman table with seafood options, including seared ahi tuna, to The Dark Knight spread with sweets to dip in dark chocolate, the team at Chef ’s Market brainstormed with the co-chairs and delivered an imaginative and on-theme menu. Attendees summoned their inner superheroes for a night of fantasy and fun, but it’s the patients of Interfaith Dental Clinic who feel like real superheroes when they regain their smiles. As the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles would say, “Cowabunga!”

Putting the Art in Party

Playing artist at Glimpse Dollye Clayton, Beth Scott Clayton Amos and Timothy Amos

A

t Glimpse, the Watkins College of Art’s annual fundraising event, the opportunity to flirt with your creative side lurked around every turn. In one corner, attendees were encouraged to make a mess while decorating drip-paint coasters that would be glazed and ready to take home within minutes. At another station, revelers could haphazardly throw a dart at a wall covered with paint-filled balloons that would burst with a satisfying splat when the sharp tip hit its target. There was a paper-covered table stocked with markers, rubber stamps and crayons, an interactive cardboard box that dared you to connect your hand to electronic sensors and dance, and — true to the Andy Warhol theme — a wall to kiss, with the collection of lips recreating a colorful version of the artist’s 1959 print “Stamped Lips.” The highlight of the evening, though, was the silent auction, which doubled as a celebration of some of Watkins’ most talented students. Dozens of paintings, photographs, ink drawings and mixed-media works lined the walls of Watkins’ gallery, and they were all available for the highest bidder to take home. Katie Gonzalez’s hand-covered and bound books were stunning, as were Karen Matkosky’s minimalist prints titled “Traffic” and “New York Grid,” the latter of which turned an overhead view of the ever-buzzing city into a simplistic grid of blocks of warm browns, oranges and blues. Unfortunately, even while surrounded by all that creative inspiration, we weren’t able to deliver anything nearly as impressive at the coloring table, but it was fun to pretend to be an artist, in the company of burgeoning artists, for even one night. And an even bigger reward was knowing that all of the funds raised at this creative event will go toward scholarships, educational programs and cuttingedge facilities, which allow Watkins and its students to continue adding color to the city of Nashville.

A Taste of Science Mad Bash is a smorgasbord of fun

W

ho knew science could be so delicious? The fun-loving crowd at this year’s Mad Bash did! Co-chairs Louise Alexander and Rankin McGugin decided to explore the sense of taste and dreamed up scrumptious and sophisticated ways to bring science to life. Attendees knew to arrive with a hearty appetite for the Adventure Science Center’s not-to-be-missed adults-only night. To set the tone for a festive evening, the Galaxy Cocktail was prepared like a lab experiment. After layering ingredients, bartenders added a splash of tonic and the cocktail suddenly glowed under the black lights. Throughout the building, enthusiastic staff members carried out live demonstrations, many involving food. Laser S’mores (laser-engraved graham crackers with marshmallows torched to order) and Spherifications (small, fruity, vodka-infused candy balls) brought out the kid in everyone. The clever and exciting menu items created by TomKats Hospitality explored flavor, aroma, texture and even memory. There was something delicious to try around every turn. Upstairs, attendees “studied” the science of pairings thanks to Corsair Distillery and Jackalope Brewing Company. Corsair brought three extraordinary spirits to accompany delicious bites: Artisan gin and triple tail ceviche, Ryemageddon and espresso-rubbed pork belly (with chocolate pop rocks!) and Triple Smoke to go with chocolate cayenne truffles. Jackalope’s pilsner was a perfect match with crispy coppa bites, and strawberry hefeweizen seemed made for lemon and goat cheese panna cotta. After a spirited live auction that included a trip to the U.S. Open, the evening continued with dancing to tunes spun by DJs from Premier. The night came to a close with cupcakes for dessert, making the ride home a little sweeter for these revelers. It was also sweet knowing that $100,000 was raised to support the fascinating exhibits and programs — such as the many shows played in Sudekum Planetarium — that were enjoyed by more than 360,000 people who visited Adventure Science Center last year.

Ready for Spring Friends & Fashion is a bubbly affair

F

riends & Fashion is a great way to support one of the nation’s leading children’s hospitals and drink mimosas before noon at the same time. The popular event, hosted by Friends of Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, welcomed almost 1,000 women, men, teens and babies — tiny babies! — to the Music City Center on a chilly Monday morning. Co-chairs Trish James, Leslie Karl and Anna Moran took over the entire Karl F. Dean Grand Ballroom for the day. The front half of the massive room was filled with silent auction items in the center and favorite stores like Gus Mayer, Kendra Scott and the hospital’s The Friends Shop lining the perimeter. Also on display were the results of the new Lab Coat Project. Twelve well-known mural artists partnered with patients to transform blank white coats into vibrant uniforms that pediatric doctors can wear on their rounds to help comfort those in their care. The luncheon and fashion show took place in the back half of the ballroom. While attendees enjoyed pesto-crusted chicken atop tricolor quinoa and chocolate mousse, emcee and lifestyle blogger Landyn Hutchinson and the hospital’s chief of staff Meg Rush shared a few words. Professional models wore the latest looks from The Friends Shop, H. Audrey and Dillard’s at The Mall at Green Hills. The Plaid Rabbit dressed the real stars of the runway — current and former young patients from ages 6 to 18 who represented the thousands of children seen every week at the children’s hospital. Thirteen-year-old Isabel Johnson, a cancer survivor, was in the show for the sixth time! Shopping continued after the show, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Friends. The all-volunteer organization has been making a difference in the quality of children’s health since it was founded in 1972. Funds raised at Friends & Fashion, as well as through other Friends projects, provide services for patients and their families in addition to the hospital’s faculty and staff.

Open and Honest Straight talk from Tara Conner at Reaching New Heights

S

tereotypes about beauty pageant contestants were shattered at this year’s Reaching New Heights Luncheon, but guest speaker Tara Conner, crowned Miss USA in 2006, wasn’t there to be judged. She came to the annual Cumberland Heights luncheon to share her struggles with drugs and alcohol and her recovery. Trading her blonde beauty queen look for a jet-black pixie cut and tattoos, she is articulate, bright, dynamic — and yes, beautiful. Co-chairs Rebecca Owen and Paige Roddey — easy to spot in color-coordinating fuchsia dresses — welcomed everyone to Hillwood Country Club. After the crowd of almost 350 people sat down, Louise Mandrell, who makes a huge impact sharing her message of hope and healing as the parent of a program graduate, received the Sheila Keeble Award. Upon stating “I’m not everybody’s cup of tea. What you see is what you get,” Tara had the audience captivated. She recounted her story of addiction that “started way before I ever put a crown on my head.” The Kentucky native sought refuge in alcohol and drugs beginning at age 14, and at age 20, she “won Miss USA fully loaded.” That same year, she entered treatment and is now 12 years in recovery. Holding her emotional support dog, Gypsy, she is grateful for being given a second chance, figuring out her struggles and realizing there would be a way to work through them. The emphasis in her message was that addiction is a disease, that no one chooses to be an addict. She praised Cumberland Heights’ women’s programs for giving patients the tools and opportunities to get through recovery. Tara’s straightforward message was a stirring reminder of how crucial the treatment facilities at Cumberland Heights are to our community. Today when Tara Conner answers tough questions, it’s more likely they’re coming from a teenager than a judge. She shares her story with middle school kids and is equally open and honest with them in order to raise awareness about addiction and start the important conversations that can end up saving lives.

Captured on Film The Nashville Zoo welcomes National Geographic photographer Joel Sartore

Co-chair Jamie Granbery, Joel Sartore, Co-chair Lisa Manning

J

ack Hanna is a tough act to follow, but the Nashville Zoo managed to find someone equally as charming and engaging for the second annual Call of the Wild events. Joel Sartore, a National Geographic photographer for more than 30 years, held the crowd in rapt attention at an intimate dinner for zoo donors and a ladies’ luncheon the following afternoon. The rain held off as more than 200 women arrived to the Jungle Terrace for the midday luncheon, where tables were draped in burlap cloths, topped with vivid orchids and lined with the most adorable frosted animal-shaped sugar cookies. A small group of lucky ladies had a chance to chat with Joel one-on-one at a preluncheon meet-and-greet at the Grassmere Historic Home, once belonging to the Croft sisters who donated the land for the zoo. Joel was eager to tour the house himself in between signing copies of his book, The Photo Ark. Once the luncheon began, Joel captivated everyone’s attention with humorous and touching anecdotes from his three-decade career photographing some of the world’s most beautiful, exotic and dangerous animals. And while his tales of traveling the globe for National Geographic were enthralling, it was his ambitious Photo Ark project that tugged at everyone’s heartstrings. For 14 years, Joel has made it his personal mission to photograph portraits of every species in captivity in the world. He’s currently documented 9,600 species at more than 400 zoos around the world, and he predicts that photographing the remaining 2,000 to 4,000 species will take another decade. A slideshow during the lecture highlighted just a few of the spectacular photos Joel has captured on his quest, but the biggest treat for the audience was the collection of hilarious and startling behind-the-scenes videos of the complicated nature of capturing some of the world’s wildest beasts on film. Joel ended his speech with a heartfelt call to action, reminding the crowd, “You don’t have to save the world. Just pick something you love and go to work.” by Nancy Floyd photographs by Daniel Meigs continued on page 54

Hitting the Mark A Grand Night for Nashville Children’s Theatre

M

ore often than not, the grown-ups at Nashville Children’s Theatre are either acting onstage or shepherding youngsters to see another wonderful play produced by the professional company. But at Grand Night, the building became a haven solely for adults. The sophomore effort for this new fundraiser proved to be a smashing success. The evening started with a soigné crowd welcoming the evening’s special guest, Broadway star Gavin Creel. In addition to his Tony Award-winning role in Hello, Dolly!, his stage credits include Thoroughly Modern Millie, Hair and The Book of Mormon — for which he received the prestigious Olivier Award. After chatting with the charming actor, guests refreshed their cocktails and turned their attention to the extensive silent auction. (A set of juggling balls came with a lesson!) Couples discussed just how high they would bid on the live auction with its onlyat-NCT items, like a walk-on role in Auntie Claus and a pre-show meal with Pete the Cat. However, the crowd needed no prodding to take their seats for dinner and flocked to the stage where dramatic lighting, red linens and a profusion of red roses replaced the usual sets and props. Gavin performed familiar show tunes, like “Something’s Coming” from West Side Story, between courses of the gourmet meal from Dream Events & Catering. At the end of the intimate performance, he surprised everyone when children between the ages of 8 and 17 from NCT classes and summer productions joined him onstage to sing “A Million Dreams” from The Greatest Showman. Then, he shocked two of the girls when he invited them to sing with him and played piano as the trio sang Adele’s “When We Were Young.” The impromptu number confirmed what attendees already knew: that arts education benefits young people. The evening raised funds to provide subsidies and scholarships for summer camps. And who knows? Maybe Nashville’s Gavin will come out of the program.

Dare To Be Bold The Fashion Forward Gala closes out the ninth annual Nashville Fashion Week

N

ashville Fashion Week finished on a bold note with the Fashion Forward Gala, held at Oz Arts Nashville, the site of the week-long sartorial celebration. After four nights of runway shows by 20 local and regional designers, the gala was a much-needed time to come together and reflect on the strides that the city’s fashion community has made in the past nine years since Nashville Fashion Week began. Managing partners Connie Cathcart-Richardson and Marcia Masulla delivered a color-packed punch at the stylish affair, enlisting Amos Gott to bring their bold and colorful theme to life. The result was a mesmerizing blend of bright hues that transformed the warehouse’s blank canvas into a vivid masterpiece. From the monochromatic tables to the color-coded cocktails, the evening was a carefully orchestrated symphony of color from start to finish. Even the frosted sugar cookies served with dessert matched each table! And while the gala was a fashionable close to the week, it also served as a chance to celebrate those within Nashville’s design and retail industries. Jewelry designer Margaret Ellis was honored posthumously for her charitable contributions with the Humanitarian Award. The oh-so-cool and oh-so-pregnant Margo Price — looking adorable in a flowy coral gown from Ola Mai with a BKMC cowboy hat — accepted the Style Icon Award. Sofie Rovenstine, our March cover girl, took home the Face of Fashion Award, and although the Victoria’s Secret model couldn’t be there to accept her award in person, she recorded a video of gratitude, telling everyone, “Nashville believed in me when no one else did.” Her mom, Lisa, accepted the award on her behalf, sharing that Sofie’s first casting ever was at Nashville Fashion Week in 2014. Point of View Award winner Olia Zavozina and Rising Star Award recipient Andrew Clancey of Any Old Iron both outfitted all of the guests at their tables in their designs. Other honorees included Linda Roberts of Private Edition, who took home the Legacy Award, and stylist and boutique owner Claudia Fowler, who was given the Fashion Forward Award. All in all, it was a chic night to toast to the past, all while continuing to propel Nashville fashion forward.

Silver Lining The Women’s Fund celebrates 25 years at Power of the Purse

S

ilver may be the traditional gift for a 25th anniversary, but purses — made of leather, fabrics and even the Styles section of The New York Times Sunday edition — were chosen to commemorate 25 years of The Women’s Fund of The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee. The annual Power of the Purse luncheon, which benefits the fund, began with the traditional silent auction of indemand and unique handbags. Hundreds of women and a few men filled the Music City Center’s Davidson Ballroom to celebrate the landmark year. Inside the ballroom, Branches made breathtaking centerpieces of tulips, roses, snapdragons and hydrangea blossoms in tones from creamy white to rich purple set in “purses” made of moss. CFMT President Ellen Lehman gave a history of the fund from its beginnings in 1994 to present day and the remarkable $1,658,845 in grants made during that time before playing the world premiere of Little Big Town’s video for their song “The Daughters,” which has thought-provoking lyrics about the expectations placed on young women. Ruth Ann Harnisch launched into an enlightening conversation with her friend and guest speaker Vicki Saunders. As founder of the global initiative #radicalgenerosity and SheEO to fund and support female-led ventures, Vicki is a fierce advocate for female entrepreneurs and rewrote the rules on how they are funded. She stressed the importance of asking for and accepting help as well as sharing abundance as a way of creating positive transformation in the world. Commending the benevolence of women in Nashville, she said radical generosity was already created here. Twenty-five years ago, a small group of women, with two enlightened men, founded The Women’s Fund within CFMT so that there would always be money to support women and girls in Middle Tennessee who were in need. The silver lining in this milestone year is a legacy for future generations of women who will be able to connect generosity with need. Vicki summed it best saying, “When women come together, anything is possible.”

Little Big Town

Shine a Light Great Futures Gala welcomes Little Big Town

W

hen the puck dropped for the Predators play-off game in Bridgestone Arena, another happening drew a crowd one block away. At the Omni Nashville Hotel, 700 people probably didn’t have hockey on their minds. More likely, they were cheering for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee and a performance from Little Big Town at the Great Futures Gala. Glamorously attired ladies and gents spent the cocktail hour perusing the silent auction, but they couldn’t resist chatting with the youngsters who mingled among them. These cute and courteous children represented more than 4,000 members at the organization’s nine clubs across the region. During dinner, cochairs Jensen Sessums and RJ Stillwell and President and CEO Dan Jernigan were outshined by witty emcees Jehlin and Cam’ron, teenage club members with a knack for public speaking and keeping a program on track. And that’s a good thing because enthusiasm for a getaway to Casa de Campo Resort and Villas in the Dominican Republic was so high that the generous donor contributed two more trips during the auction. Two impressive speakers from the Preston Taylor club highlighted the lifealtering impact BGCMT makes for so many kids. Eighteen-year-old Tzipora is the 2019 Middle Tennessee Youth of the Year and Tennessee State Youth of the Year and will be the first member of her family to go to college. Singer Taylor Gayle, who at 15 recently signed with Art House Records, gleefully announced, “Now I can say I’ve opened for Little Big Town!” The multiple-award-winning group closed the night with their biggest hits in a high-energy show that had people on their feet. When it was over, guests joined jubilant hockey fans in the streets. The Preds won that night, but because of more than $540,000 raised at this year’s Great Futures Gala, the big winners are the boys and girls who can look forward to brighter futures because of Boys & Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee.

T

he art is, of course, an undeniable draw for attendees of the Frist Gala every year, but the biggest jaw-dropping surprise of the night comes more than an hour into the party when guests finally make their way into the dinner tent. After sipping Champagne, nibbling on hors d’œuvres, mingling with friends and enjoying a private tour of the featured exhibit — in this year’s case, Van Gogh, Monet, Degas, and Their Times: The Mellon Collection of French Art — everyone is ushered from the Grand Lobby to the massive tent constructed off the rear of the art museum, and the awe and delight that washes over their faces as they see how this makeshift space has been dramatically transformed is akin to watching someone take in a brilliant piece of art for the first time. With a packed social season that can sometimes feel redundant year after year, the Frist Gala’s ever-evolving theme is a refreshing change. The co-chairs and the event planner are given free rein to construct a new concept each year, tailored to one of the art museum’s major exhibits. Co-chairs Kathleen Estes and Susanne Cato, working in tandem with Hugh Howser of H Three Events, had much to be inspired by in the French-themed collection. And given the looks of wonder as attendees entered the exquisite tent, their efforts were a success. Hugh concealed the colossal tent by draping charcoal chiffon over the ceilings and walls, creating the illusion of a grand formal dining room, complete with crystal chandeliers, gilded mirrors and an arbor dripping with greenery. French blue was the natural color of choice, popping up most notably in the centerpieces of hydrangeas arranged by The Tulip Tree. Kristen Winston carried the theme into the lavish three-course meal, which started with a divine cheese plate. Filet mignon with dijon tarragon sauce followed, and the dinner concluded with a chocolate framboise cake topped with the tiniest macaron. It was a délicieux end to a magnifique night. by Nancy Floyd photographs by Daniel Meigs continued on page 70

I coach local sports teams, I founded and run an area non-profit for families with young children, and I send my kids to the local schools. I’m invested in Brentwood and Williamson County and have a network of past clients and ambassadors to help my team achieve incredible results for our clients.

David Koellein

A Nashville native, I have an eye for inspired living spaces and a passion for preserving our city’s authenticity. Now residing in Wedgewood Houston, this exciting neighborhood’s market value is just beginning to benefit our locals, transplants, and investors. When not selling in Nashville’s urban core, you can find me in Cheatham County, escaping the hustle with my clients. I live to buy and sell in these areas known for their cabin life, land, and country living. From first homes to investment opportunities, I provide personalized, thorough advisory to help you to achieve your goals.

My competence is your confidence! As a Harvard-educated urban planner, relocation specialist, and multi-year GNR award winner, I make it my business to earn and keep my clients’ trust throughout the process of buying or selling their homes. I am an Accredited Buyer Representative (ABR) and Seller Representative Specialist (SRS), so I handle every need. I am a Nashville native and Germantown resident, and I specialize in Nashville’s urban neighborhoods, Green Hills, and Williamson County. Not one for self-marketing (this advertisement notwithstanding), I build my business, instead, each time one impressed client tells a friend or family member about my thoroughness, strategic approach, and good humor. From consultation to closing, I keep you confident. M: 615.584.9993 O: 615.475.5616 david.koellein@compass.com

Stepping into 3728 West End, past the Ionic columns and through the double doors, feels like stepping into Nashville’s past. It’s a trip back a century in time, when the busy thoroughfare was a meannashville, tennessee dering road traversed by electric streetcars and dotted with stately mansions. Built in 1910, this 3,800-square-foot Neoclassical home is as glamorous and grand as the era it hails from. While the house has been updated with modern conveniences throughout, many of the original touches remain. Egg-and-dart carved molding frames the foyer, as it did when the house was built 109 years ago, and pairs perfectly with upgraded honed limestone flooring. The first level is flanked by two gas fireplaces with marble mantels — one to the right of the foyer in the masculine den with built-in bookcases and one in the formal living room to the left. Original pocket doors are easily tucked away to create a more open floor plan but allow opportunities for privacy when needed. Rounding out the first floor is a formal dining room with coffered ceiling, an old-world wet bar with original oak cabinetry and exposed brick walls, a breakfast nook, a powder room, and a fully updated

nfocusnashville.com

kitchen with Thermador gas range, dishwasher, double ovens and hidden refrigerator. Off the rear of the house, a spacious screened porch feels secluded despite the home’s very central location. The sumptuous master suite awaits upstairs with a massive custom closet and luxurious master bathroom boasting a soaking tub, double vanities and a double shower, all fashioned from Carrera marble. Two other bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, one with a Juliet balcony that overlooks West End, can be found on the second level. The truest indicator of the home’s origins can be found in the attic with its exposed brick walls, original hardwood floors and decorative windows. The space was formerly used as a dance hall in the home’s early days, and with the right touch from a thoughtful new owner, it could easily be restored to its former glory. While the city continues to change and evolve as it hurtles headlong into the future, this magnificent gem harkens to Nashville’s illustrious past.

When builder and interior designer Branan White describes his homes as turnkey, he’s not exaggerating. “We fully furnish most of our homes and then everything’s Nashville, Tennessee available for sale,” Branan says. “Sometimes people come in and they buy a lamp or they buy everything. ... It just kind of depends on what they want.” One of his newest homes, 3416 Richards St., showcases his signature style — an open floor plan with lots of outdoor living space, including a screened porch with a gas fireplace and a perfect spot above it for a 60-inch flatscreen TV. Branan says even the fireplace has a remote for “instant drama.” Just beyond the porch is an enviable yard with an outdoor fire pit and lots of seating, including a large sectional. There’s also a front courtyard with a dining table. “It,” says Branan, “is a great party house.”

nfocusnashville.com

4/24/19 12:09 PM

If the term “spec house” conjures up lots of white walls and lighting fixtures so generic they’re meant to be replaced, you haven’t been in one of Branan White’s spec homes. He designs each one to fit an individual lot, never reuses a floor plan and doesn’t hesitate to infuse his houses with a little personality — whether it’s with wallpaper, vaulted ceilings, reclaimed floating wood shelves, vintage lighting fixtures juxtaposed with contemporary ones, or antique doors he discovered in a furniture mart in Texas and brought back with other finds in an 18-wheeler. The Cape Dutch house on Richards Street was done in collaboration with the Franklin-based architectural firm P. Shea Design. It spans 4,730 square feet and features 4 bedrooms and 4 1⁄2 baths, including a master bedroom on the first floor, and in keeping with the home’s theme, two of the three bedrooms upstairs have ladders that lead to sleeping lofts, perfect for slumber parties.

Hidden in plain sight, 404 Lynnwood Blvd. is a stunning Belle Meade home reminiscent of a European chalet. Sitting on just over an acre, its true stucco exterior and cedar shake roof are Nashville, Tennessee accented by copper gutters and dark green accents. Guests are welcomed by 19th-century antique double french doors that open into a foyer with 12-foot ceilings and gorgeous Venetian plaster walls that carry throughout the entire first floor. Beyond the foyer lies an entertainer’s dream home. The main kitchen sports an impressive La Cornue range and double oven with a custom white oak hood as well as custom cabinets that hide unseemly appliances. A large rustic table sits across the island for casual meals, and a caterer’s prep kitchen is attached for more involved entertaining. The formal dining room is a thing of beauty, with enormous sweeping windows that meet at a corner and flood the room with light. A pecky cypress vaulted ceiling adds warmth and interest. Salvaged double doors from New

Orleans lead into the butler’s area, which also connects to the kitchen. One of the most inviting areas is the screened porch, complete with a wood-burning fireplace and an extra-large Big Green Egg with custom hood and limestone countertops. A pecky cypress ceiling with recessed lighting truly carries the feel of the home into the outdoors, creating a seamless transition whether the occasion calls for indoors or out. The master suite sits on the main floor and includes a water room in its en suite bath with double brass showerheads and a stand-alone tub. The additional bedrooms with their respective baths are tucked away upstairs along with a second space for laundry, a sitting area and an accompanying room that could just as easily be used as an office or a playroom. As if all that isn’t enough, the home is pool-ready and also features a separate guest cottage, complete with a full bath and moody dark gray shiplap walls and ceiling. It’s just so inviting that you may have to remind your guests not to overstay their welcome.

The home at 1150 Travelers Ridge Drive cannot be done justice by images or words alone. One must drive up the climbing ridge and walk across the entrance bridge to properly experience the jaw-dropper. With the front and back of the house comprised of floor-to-ceiling windows — and from its perch at roughly 1,000 Nashville, Tennessee feet above sea level — one can literally see through the dwelling from outside the front door, revealing the unsurpassable view that lies beyond it: Tennessee’s rolling forested hills and, 8 miles away, a clear shot of Nashville’s skyline. This residence is nestled in the trees on a 2-acre plot that paradoxically boasts unobstructed views for miles upon miles and total seclusion. And to top it off, current owner and listing agent Laura Stroud also purchased 2 additional acres that sit between the home and its spectacular views to eliminate all possibilities of that one day being compromised. The 4 bedroom, 4 1⁄2 bath abode features 5,450 square feet, vaulted ceilings, a three-level floating staircase, four fireplaces, pecan hardwood flooring and whole-house audio that stretches into the outdoors. Not to mention,

nfocusnashville.com

4/24/19 12:10 PM

nearly every room benefits from a direct eye line to those glorious floor-to-ceiling windows and that unbeatable view — something highly acclaimed master architect Robert Anderson cleverly thought through when designing the three-story house that turned out to be his last project. Originally completed in 1999 and built for Judge John Brown and his wife, Anne, the home has since undergone major renovations and modern updates. John and Anne once enjoyed entertaining there and even hosted weddings in the living room for several members of Willie Nelson’s band. Willie himself often stayed there, as evidenced by a large parking area across the street, which was designed specifically to accommodate his tour bus. Other noteworthy aspects include a stand-alone soaking tub in the master bath with, you guessed it, an enormous window overlooking that same view; copper eaves, gutters, downspouts and chimney caps; a fully prepped elevator shaft outfitted with electricity and ventilation; and a swoon-worthy kitchen with custom quarter-sawn walnut cabinetry, honed granite countertops and floating lower cabinets with tech-lighting underneath that makes the whole kitchen glow at night, mirroring those spectacular downtown lights.

The penthouse at the 505 is, quite literally, the pinnacle of urban living. At 45 stories, the condominium tower is the tallest residential skyscraper in Nashville, soaring above what has become a Nashville, Tennessee thriving neighborhood in the heart of downtown. The 505 boasts four two-story penthouses at 3,606 square feet. Number 4504 sits on the northwest corner of the building, and the 20-foot, floor-to-ceiling windows in the living room and master suite grant spectacular views of Bicentennial Mall, the Cumberland River, First Tennessee Park, the Parthenon and Centennial Park, the soon-to-be sites of Nashville Yards and Amazon towers and Tennessee’s rolling verdant hills in the distance. Even the soaking tub and marble shower in the master bathroom offer unparalleled and unobstructed views of downtown and beyond. Every corner of the palatial pad is appointed with luxury finishes, from the Wolf stove and the built-in Sub-Zero refrigerator in the kitchen to the his-and-hers walk-in closets and private water closets in the master suite. The penthouse’s second floor houses two more bedrooms, each with a private bathroom and walls of windows, and the glass-lined landing that overlooks the living room could easily serve as a sitting area or workspace. The penthouse also includes a private six-car garage and a temperature-controlled wine locker in the building’s cellar. The amenities for owners at the 505 make this home feel more like a five-star resort. Homeowner Paige Kisber opens the front door of her stately updated Georgian home barefoot and dressed in a lightweight sweater and jeans. It is the perfect attire for a home she fittingly Nashville, Tennessee calls “warm and inviting. Once inside, steps lead up to a dining room framed by floor-toceiling windows that look out on a landscaped backyard that includes a charming, re-imagined guest house. The 1920s structure was already there when Paige and her husband, Matt, purchased the property in 2009. They tore down the existing main house and rebuilt it but left the guest house. The couple and their two children had previously been living in an older home on Sunnyside Drive in Belle Meade. While they had originally planned to renovate and enlisted the help of architect Van Pond, it was looking

more and more difficult and cost prohibitive. In a collaborative effort between homeowners and architect, they adjusted the plans to accommodate a new build, and in doing so, instilled the character and integrity of an older house. The result was a home with soaring ceilings, hardwood and tile floors and built-ins galore. One feature it does not have, however, is an open floor plan. “I like rooms,” says Paige. The 6,950-squarefoot, 4 bedroom, 4 1⁄2 bath home has sitting rooms, a media room, a home office, a chef ’s kitchen and two laundry rooms. While all the family members have plenty of their own space because of the design of the house, Paige says “everybody is still close.” The guest house provides another 750 square feet with one bedroom, one bath, an upstairs loft, a kitchenette and a working fireplace.

This historic property at 501 Murfreesboro Road in Franklin stays true to its roots while offering the latest features. The Italianatestyle home, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, sits Franklin, Tennessee on 5 acres within walking distance of downtown. Known as the Vaughn-McCall House, it was built in 1870 by Andrew Vaughn, who owned the local brickworks factory, and was one of the first brick residences in Franklin. Now, Kara and Matt Christensen of Garden Gate Homes have renovated and reconstructed the estate so that it has everything for modern living. Enlarged to 5,727 square feet, it boasts 4 bedrooms and 5 1â „2 baths. The double porch, front door and wavy glass windowpanes are original, and meticulous attention to detail preserved the front rooms, trim, fireplaces and staircase. Upon entering the house, a study, which could double as a guest bedroom, is on the right. Across from it sits the parlor, and beyond is a light-filled dining room. A respect for the past is evident in the renovation of existing spaces. The wide central hall was the side porch, and the gourmet kitchen with state-of-the-art appliances follows the footprint of the previous one. Bricks sur-

rounding the six-burner Wolf gas stove are from the original kitchen fireplace, which once sat in the same spot. Other high-end amenities include a Sub-Zero refrigerator-freezer, Asko dishwasher and quartz countertops. A new sitting room opens to the large covered porch and expansive backyard. The inviting family room was built for entertaining and seamlessly blends the latest elements and touches with the front rooms. Separated from the public areas by its own foyer, the master suite is a haven with 11-foot ceilings and a cozy sitting area. The lavish master bath offers a soaking tub and large shower, abundant double vanities and a walk-in closet. Upstairs, two original bedrooms, both with fireplaces, now have access to a versatile bonus room with large windows and storage galore. The opportunity to own a 5-acre estate near Historic Downtown Franklin is extremely rare, especially one that so thoughtfully retains its authentic character yet includes all the conveniences for a 21st-century lifestyle. This incredible house is just waiting for the perfect family to write the next chapter in its history.

Frances Reynol ds Fish er marries Thomas Francis Corcoran IV

Francie Fisher and Tom Corcoran first met in preschool at Westminster Church and “dated” briefly in eighth grade when she was at Ensworth and he was at Montgomery Bell Academy, but they didn’t reconnect until 2014. She was working at Town & Country magazine in New York after graduating from Wake Forest University, and he was working in Dallas with Lockton after graduating from Southern Methodist University. They were both in Nashville attending the Bal d’Hiver, where Tom’s mother was serving as honorary chairman and Francie’s mother as a co-chair. When Francie asked Tom why he was there, he responded, “My mother is the chair.” Francie answered, “No, my mother is the chair.” Since neither had a date, Francie’s father suggested Tom ask Francie to dance.

For the next two years, they flew the friendly skies between New York and Dallas before both moving back to Nashville. Tom proposed in 2017 at his house — on bended knee at the end of a trail of rose petals and photos highlighting their courting days. Both families celebrated later that evening with dinner at the Corcorans’. The couple married in February at West End United Methodist Church, where Francie’s parents said their vows 32 years earlier. The bride wore a gown designed by family friend Muna Abboud of Muna Couture. A bodice of nude silk chiffon with Alençon lace topped a satin skirt embellished with embroidered appliqué. Francie wore a detachable overskirt and long train for the ceremony and had

a 1928 sixpence in her maroon velvet pumps for good luck. She processed to the strains of “Highland Cathedral” played by bagpiper Steve Snoddy, who later led guests as they walked from the church to the seated dinner at nearby Loews Vanderbilt Hotel. Guests dined on sea bass and danced to the music of Jessie’s Girls from Atlanta. Amos Gott was their event planner, and Phil Colling was the videographer. After a wedding trip to Anguilla and St. Barts, the newlyweds returned to Nashville, where Francie is an account supervisor for DVL Seigenthaler and Tom is the manager of acquisitions for Crestview Funds. Their parents are Irwin and Jeff Fisher and Jane and Tom Corcoran. by Sandy Nelson

The Basics Name: Karen Seapker Represented by: Zeitgeist Gallery Education: MFA in painting from Hunter College in New York, Honors BA in studio art and art history from Muhlenberg College See her work: Wilder showroom at Seventh and Taylor, Metro Nashville courthouse, private collections Website: karenseapker.com

The Art

The Bold and the Beautiful Powerful colors — and equally powerful women — in the paintings of Karen Seapker Karen Seapker is a bold artist, not only because the vibrant colors and graphic brushstrokes she works with demonstrate a confidence in her aesthetic decisions, although that is certainly true. Karen is bold because she constantly pushes herself — both in the subjects she chooses and the formal qualities with which she presents them — even after reaching a point of excellence. “I seek to find a way to use my paintings to engage with material to create real meaning and ask real questions,” she says. Karen speaks with precision and a quiet demeanor that might not be what you’d expect from someone with such a visually striking body of work. “Visually, the paintings are so poppy that I think they’re easily understood at a surface level, but they’re not just that. I lean on my paintings to pull myself out of daily life in some ways, but I also use them as possibilities. I take things from my life and consider what it means to be human in various stages of life.” When Karen moved to Nashville from New York just over five years ago, she quickly became involved with the local art community and the independent artist collective Coop. At that point, her work was largely about memory; she painted landscapes from her childhood and portraits of family members overlapped with swirls of dizzying color, sort of like Van Gogh’s “Starry Night.” Slowly, those swirls became central to her work, which have since become much more abstract. A recent showcase of paintings at Zeitgeist, the Wedgewood-Houston gallery that represents her, was filled with large-scale canvases that focused on candy-colored Gerhard Richter-style streaks of paint. On closer examination, the paintings showed Egyptian goddesses nursing children or a Madonna figure holding her son. The turn toward ancient subject matter corresponded with Karen’s own foray into motherhood — she and her husband, musician Bill Eberle, are raising their two daughters in Nashville. Still, Karen doesn’t want her paintings to be understood as anything other than contemporary — she includes details like Nike sneakers and graphic T-shirts on her goddess subjects. “I was at a point in my life where I really wanted to surround myself with powerful women,” she says. The series is called “Sentinels,” and the works function like stained glass in a grand cathedral — when you’re surrounded by them, you can’t help but feel empowered. To Karen, painting is very much a romantic pursuit. “They’re not just paintings about painting,” she says. “I’m trying to nudge out what life is.” by Laura Hutson Hunter photographs by Daniel Meigs

“Offering (For Renenutet)” 2017, Oil on canvas, 72 x 60 inches Renenutet is the Egyptian goddess of the harvest and nourishment, and she was frequently depicted with the head of a cobra. The extremely maternal combination of destructive and protective qualities occurs throughout ancient Egyptian mythology. Here, Renenutet is shown nursing a child on a royal purple panel. “I think about how I can utilize color to create rhythms,” says Karen. “If you put colors next to one another and they contrast enough, it can indicate a really quick jump. I think about it as a way of choreographing a visual experience.”

“Night Waking (For Durga)” 2017, Oil on canvas, 48 x 36 inches Durga is a many-armed protective mother goddess in Hindu mythology whose power centers around destroying evil and other threats to peace. She is often shown riding a lion or tiger and has many arms, each of which carries a weapon. In this painting, a figure cradles a child with a halo radiating around its head. But looking closer, it also seems as though both figures are themselves being held — the whirls of fingerprints are evident on the tendrils that surround them.

Breakfast, Please What’s cooking at Fido and Stay Golden by Carrington Fox

Fido takes its name from an earlier retail incarnation, an iconic Hillsboro Village pet shop, still represented in Fido’s vintage sign, complete with cartoon dog. But for more than three decades now, the all-day neighborhood anchor has been synonymous with breakfast. Owner Bob Bernstein, the brains behind the Bongo Java coffee empire, and his team of baristas, pastry chefs and creative culinarians have been serving up a menu of locally sourced seasonal cuisine, headlined by all-day breakfast. If you can avert your eyes from the colorful cakes and pies while you wait in line to order, you’ll read chalkboards overflowing with whimsical steamed drinks, ranging from a confection of bergamot simple syrup, coconut milk, espresso and chocolate shavings to a so-called Butter Beer with butterscotch schnapps, brown sugar, cream soda, coconut milk and espresso. Similarly surprising and innovative combinations emerge in daily dish specials such as a beer-battered skate wing sandwich with roasted poblano tartar sauce and pickled red onions or a bison burger with blackberry whipped goat cheese and bacon. Breakfast is the real gravy train in this decadent dog house, where the regular crowd starts queuing early for the smoked salmon scramble, pancakes, huevos rancheros, sweet potato French toast and a battery of bagel sandwiches. But don’t let the long line deter you. Things move fast, and before you know it, you’ll be pouring yourself a hot cup of joe and sliding into a booth just about the time your McFido bagel with scrambled eggs and local ham arrives at the table to meet you.

The team behind this stylish coffee-centric nameplate brings a distinguished caffeinated CV to their shops in East Nashville and Berry Hill. After debuting with a cool, cavernous restaurant and roasting venue on Sidco Drive, the team followed up quickly with an outpost on Woodland Street. With two airy stories of dining space and a roasting operation under the soaring barrel vault of an updated Woodbine warehouse, Stay Golden opens the day with toasty tartines of sourdough from Dozen Bakery, piled with smoked trout, sorrel and shallots, or smashed avocado with a soft-boiled egg. There’s also a crispy yeasted waffle and a shakshuka with roasted tomatoes and herbs. The lunchtime sandwich roster ranges from a Cuban on sourdough to falafel on a potato bun to a Porter Road burger with avocado, bacon and egg. Coffee and cocktails are both worth their weight in gold, infused as much with creativity as with caffeine and booze. Start the day with a housemade doughnut or a cinnamon bun, accompanied by a macchiato, cortado or rested espresso with gingersnap cookie milk. A spirited spirits menu stirs vodka with clove-tinged liqueur, cranberry and lemon; bourbon with sugar and housemade bitters; and mulled wine with aquavit and ginger. Meanwhile, there’s a boozy column of concoctions shaken with rested espresso, stirred with Matchless coffee soda and poured over coffee ice. It’s a versatile coffeeand-cocktails repertoire fitting for any hour of the day — be it early, happy or golden.

It’s Not Me, It’s You Expert etiquette advice from John Bridges

Iffy Investment We’re getting ready to downsize and sell our house, since the kids are grown and have moved out. With the market as it is, I don’t expect any problem. The house is in a good neighborhood. My wife and I bought it from her parents, and we’ve kept it in fine shape. The problem, however, is that my wife’s nephew has just started in real estate. His mother, my wife’s sister, thinks he should have the job, and my wife feels he should have a chance. The guy, who’s sort of a loser, hasn’t been a success in any job he’s tried, and I’d like to make as much as possible off the house. How do I explain it to my wife or to her sister? —Anonymous, West Meade Your next family reunion may not be much fun. No matter what decision you make, somebody very likely will arrive carrying a grudge. If you decide to do business with the ne’er-do-well nephew, he may do a fine job. But who knows? You won’t have another chance to sell the house. It’s a wise idea to keep your distance from kinfolk when you’re doing crucial business. Deal with blood relations and you can end up with stuff spilled all over the floor. However, your sister-in-law is already involved in the deal. You, or your wife, are going to have to negotiate with her. The decision is your wife’s as well as yours. The house, after all, came down from her parents, and she may be rather fond of the “loser.” If you don’t talk about it, trouble will be waiting every evening when you sit down for dinner at your new place. Together, you’ll have to decide. Peace may be worth the pennies.

Paws for thought southcomm_2018_ad.indd My friends come by and bring their Yorkies, the way they always have. It’s no problem, except as the dogs have gotten older, they’ve become incontinent. My friends seem to notice nothing until the problem becomes impossible to ignore. They know where the powder room is, so they rush there and pick up a few paper guest towels to blot up the mess. That’s a nice gesture, but it doesn’t get the stains out of the rugs or the smell of doggie pee-pee out of the air. I’ve stood there in amazement. What should I do? Just wait for the dogs to die? —Anonymous, Brentwood

5/14/18 10:04 AM

When the cute little creatures move on to doggie heaven, you can be damp with grief. Your rugs, however, are damp with something else right now. Put out a roll of paper towels or put out a spray bottle of vinegar for your friends to spritz around after a boo-boo. They seem ready to wipe up, and who could mind blotting the carpet after their adorables have done their business? You can certainly ask them to leave their pooches of a certain age at home, but your easier option is to wait until the pooches have moved along before you invite your friends back. (It can’t be all that long.) Then perhaps they’ll invite you over, and you can recommend a rug cleaner.

The Art of the Matter Beginning with the David LaChapelle photograph behind the front desk, pieces of art on loan from investors Jennifer and Billy Frist can be found throughout the hotel. The Frists, along with developers Alex Marks and Bill Barkley, have been working on the project since 2015. The Dream team brought in architects Earl Swensson Associates and the New York-based interior design firm Meyer Davis Studio to help bring the plan to life. Dream Hotels have also found homes in New York, Hollywood, Miami and Bangkok.

Dream Nashville

photographs by Edward Menashy

Dream Nashville — the newest addition to legendary Printers Alley — is a blend of historic and contemporary after developers combined landmarked buildings, rehabbing what was once the Utopia hotel and rebuilding the former Climax Saloon, keeping the stone façade intact. However, in the early 1900s, the façade was not its claim to fame. “This was known for its kind of raucous ground floor pub,” says Michael Lindenbaum, executive vice president of hotel development and operation. “The second floor had an illegal gambling saloon. The third floor was the brothel. It was known more for its secret exits than its grand entrances.” Now those behind the Dream Nashville hotel hope it will be known not only for its dramatic entrance but for its food and beverage, a clear goal considering its seven restaurants and bars. The mainstay, Stateside Kitchen, offers menu items including a 48-ounce Bear Creek Farm tomahawk steak for two served with asparagus, black-eyed peas and brabant potatoes as well as a 22-ounce Kurobuta bone-in pork chop served with green apple chutney, black-eyed peas and collard greens. The elegant Parlour Bar offers cocktails including a smoked peach OldFashioned and a CBD cocktail called Gin and Chronic. The smaller, intimate Back Bar has a glass of Old Fashioned Copper bourbon on its menu, which commands a mere $1,000 a glass. “There are only 60 bottles in the world of this vintage,” says beverage director Jason Owens. “We were lucky enough to get one. They usually go for about $20K at auction.” by Whitney Clay

On the Menu

Suite Dream

A Match Made in Heaven

Rounding out the restaurant and bar offerings are Natura, a cafe with healthy menu items including an açai bowl and avocado toast as well as a cold brew coffee and oat milk latte on tap by La Colombe Coffee Roasters; Easy 8, a gourmet sandwich shop with a walk-up window; Snitch, a cocktail den complete with a piano and unexpected guests like Luke Bryan; and Dirty Little Secret, an event and music venue with live bands as well as DJs and a 200inch LED TV.

The hotel has 140 rooms and 30 suites, including the Terrace Suite, which has a fully furnished outdoor patio, complete with barbecue grill and butler so guests can cook out without lifting a spatula. In the master bedroom, a signature Suminagashi wall covering, made to look like marble, hangs above the bed. The suite also has a Murphy bed, which turns the large living area into a second bedroom. The Art Deco-inspired décor features a royal blue curved velvet sofa with bright orange throw pillows.

For the first time, Dream Hotels has entered into a partnership with the London-based AllSaints clothing brand, known for its edgy leather jackets, sheer floral dresses and combat boots. The Fourth Avenue location caters to both men and women and features a blackand-white graphic T-shirt made just for Dream Nashville. The boutique has a back door that leads directly into the venue, Dirty Little Secret, and will be open at night for guests who might want to shop before they bop.

House Party 1995

In 1986, the Junior League of Nashville launched its Designers’ Show House, a weeks-long open house of sorts that showcased the work of Nashville’s best interior designers while raising money for JLN community projects. The popular Preview Party gave social swells a first peek at the posh rooms followed by dinner, drinking and dancing. In 1995, the party at the Edwin Keeble-designed home once belonging to Horace Hill drew more than 700 people, all excited to check out the architectural treasure before it opened to the public. Although the partygoers weren’t prospective buyers, it would have been a real estate agent’s dream to have that many people wander through one of their listings.
