Distinctly Nashville Perfect in every way

F

or this Homes of Distinction issue, our crew toured the cross-section that is the great Nashville real estate market. What we found was that it was really hard to choose which homes to feature because there were so many excellent ones. This was a record-breaking year for submissions and anybody needing to make a residential move has a lot to think about.

One of the biggest considerations is what you need for the stage of life you are in. Some of the houses had young-ish owners without children and could have been in ELLE Décor, on a Pinterest board or in a West Elm catalogue.

Others reflected older owners who had collections of expensive items, placed high above the reach

of grandchildren and coasters on all available surfaces. Lastly, there were examples of very much livedin homes with children, with containers of toys and height charts.

But the one thing these homes had in common was a sense of distinction and personality much like the elements of Nashville. They were stylish and welcoming and open to new ideas, but with a respect for the old ones that still meant something.

After exploring so many houses, I realized that there are many examples of the perfect one. For most of us, our houses are works in progress and that’s just fine. Hopefully we can each find a warm place of respite and distinct personality— with or without coasters.

obert Hendrick is the CEO of a healthcare IT firm and owns a railroad services company here in Nashville.

And in his spare time—yes, spare time—he creates custom furniture out of scrap metal and wood he salvages from out on the rails. In other words, Robert’s third full-time job is Rail Yard Studios.

Robert grew up in Nashville at the foot of his father’s ladder, learning carpentry from a young age, and received his undergraduate and graduate degrees in industrial design. After several years traveling and working in technology, he found an entrepreneurial venture about a decade ago in the purchase of a railroad company in Nashville. While exploring the ins and outs of the company, he noticed century-old rails bearing names like Carnegie and Bethlehem being sold for scrap and beautiful virgin wood being burned due to imperfections. Recognizing an artistic opportunity that could bring

him back to his carpentry roots, he began having his workers collect these scraps in their spare time.

Like the beginning of any good business, Rail Yard Studios got its start in Robert’s parents’ garage, with he and his father, Jim, building furniture out of the salvaged railroad materials. They used worn steel rails and discarded unused, uncreosoted beams to create sleek, industriallooking furniture, from conference and coffee tables to wine racks and iPad holders. Robert’s favorite piece of furniture is always the last piece he’s made. Their next step is rolling out a lighting line.

Most of Robert’s business comes through his website, so you won’t find his pieces for sale in any Nashville stores. If you’re itching to see one of Robert’s pieces in person, you’re in luck—a 12-bottle wine rack is being sold in this year’s Swan Ball auction. How to save a life

espite the fact that it was 7:30 a.m., a crowd of more than 500 local philanthropists and community and business leaders were bright-eyed and bushy-tailed as they filed into Allen Arena at Lipscomb.

And the award goes to…

W

hen it comes to recognizing outstanding volunteerism, there is perhaps no organization more qualified than Hands On Nashville. The nonprofit has spent the past 20+ years connecting volunteers to critical needs in Nashville and last year alone, they placed more than 117,000 individuals for acts of service in our city. Hoping to shine a light on some of Nashville’s most dedicated volunteers, HON teamed up with HCA/ TriStar Health for the 27th annual Mary Catherine Strobel Volunteer Awards.

As guests noshed on the delicious spread from Maggiano’s, which included their signature salad, fresh bread and baked ziti, they listened to welcoming remarks and words of thanks from Albert Menefee, honorary chairman Meg Rush, Bank of America’s Mary Ellen Rodgers and Iroquois Alliance’s Libby Cheek and Dwight Hall. But the speaker who really stole the show was 5-year-old child ambassador Maddie Wright, who charmed the entire crowd with what might possibly be the cutest endorsement the hospital has ever received.

No one was deterred by the weather, though, as the guests happily nibbled on corn cakes stuffed with fried green tomatoes and crisp bacon, roast beef and biscuits, and smoked salmon, all prepared by Andy Marshall’s Puckett’s Grocery, complemented by assorted cupcakes from Nothing Bundt Cakes.

After a quick walk from the tent to the Show House, the guests were treated to the latest concepts in interior design and furnishings. The 4,000 square-foot, transitional, Shingle-style home is located on the quiet cul-desac of Berry’s Circle, just outside the

toric neighborhood, was open to the public for most of April.

nseasonable cold and random snow flurries on a recent Sunday evening did not hinder patrons of FiftyForward’s Crown Affair from making the trek to the Forest Hills aerie of Judy and Pete Nehbut’s for a cocktail supper. Co-hosts Sissy and Sidney McAlister warmly welcomed guests as they almost blew in the door. Crowning Achievement honoree Patricia Hart arrived despite recent hip surgery, and she held court from her wheelchair.

Stunning views from every window, delectable bites from d.Kates, and elegant flowers by Jane Sloan were the perfect mix for a simple, yet sophisticated, night honoring the patrons of the upcoming event. The crowd was a lively mix of longtime supporters and new faces.

“We need to attract college graduates,” Karl said, plain and simply. Bill expounded upon that, adding, “Just 32% of Tennesseans have a two-year degree, and in 10 years, 55% of jobs will require that. Major manufacturers stress that more trained workers are needed, along with greater diversity. Fisk gives us all three. James impresses me in that he’s already begun making the hard decisions necessary to accomplish this goal. While 40% of Fisk students come from Tennessee, I want 100% to stay!” said the popular governor. We later glimpsed the UP band by Jawbone on his wrist and questioned him about its “hipness.”

He responded, with a smile, “I like data.” Indeed, he does.

James Williams’ larger-than-life personality is infectious to all who meet him. The crowd talked him up from the start, so much so that the lawyer/CPA/CMA explained, “I never lose my voice, so I’m not sure why it’s deserting me tonight.” His words were still heard loud and clear while the applause for both he and the Fisk students he introduced was enthusiastic and appreciative.

s the latest participant in the 2013 Martin Shallenberger Artist In Residence Program at Cheekwood, Atlanta artist Dorothy O’Connor brought her acclaimed Scenes series to the Frist Learning Center. The Shallenberger program, which brings national and international artists to Cheekwood to create one-of-a-kind pieces and interact with the local arts community throughout the creative process, allows artists like Dorothy to do much of their work on-site.

Kudos to Waltz chairmen Milah and Steve Lynn for going the extra mile, along with Auction Chair Nancy Russell, to ensure that the silent auction was not only a success but jawdropping and conversation-stopping.

There were a few heated, friendly debates over who had the final bid. A weekend at the Blackberry Farm was much fought over but finally landed

A plethora of highly rated wines, contributed by top connoisseur Tom Black, was a definite highlight of the evening along with the unique biplane ride over Nashville donated by John and Katherine Summers. Bidding was also started on a rather unique experience—having one’s caricature painted on The Palm restaurant’s walls—and will be finalized on Waltz night as the only auction item showcased in the Capitol. Synthesize that with hearty hors d’œuvres by Kristen Winston and you have a perfect party.

Dorothy’s Scenes series, which has spanned seven years, combines still life, portraiture and landscape, creating unique installations in the tableau vivant, or “living picture” style.

After holding open studio hours to allow visitors to observe her work, Dorothy’s installations, inspired by Cheekwood’s natural landscape, will be on display until June 30.

Visitors can expect to find the Frist Learning Center galleries as a veritable enchanted forest comprised of book pages and handmade flora and fauna. Dorothy, who often uses trees in her work to represent aging, history, life and death, has incorporated the root system of a forest in this work. The central part of this scene is installed in the courtyard gallery at the Frist Learning Center.

Dorothy’s residency at Cheekwood marks the first time she’s built an installation of her Scenes series outside of her Atlanta studio.

What these three women all have in common is their new membership in Ida’s Friends, a nonprofit organization of outstanding women which gathers from time to time to honor, recognize and celebrate women and their achievements.

Named for Ida Cooney, deceased former President of the HCA Foundation who loved connecting women, this gathering has continued under the tutelage of power ladies Colleen Conway-Welch and Nancy Hearn. Two to three times a year, a wine and cheese reception is held at Colleen’s home to introduce new members to the group. “We like to introduce phenomenal women to phenomenal women,” explained Colleen. “There are no dues, no bylaws, no minutes and no officers, although Nancy does tell me what to do!”

An interesting aspect of this gathering of movers and shakers is that the honorees must tell one thing others might not know about them. This is always fascinating and gives the current members something to “talk about” or remember about the new inductees. Yvette shared her passion for foster children, while Heather explained that her interest in nursing was a result of her father’s death at a young age (49) and Anna-Gene noted that

she is a graduate of Colleen’s at the Vanderbilt School of Nursing.

After the introductions, the mixing and mingling commenced in earnest with Colleen warning everyone that the doors of her home would be locked until all the food was devoured and cleaned off the dining room table. It was so scrumptious and the reception so enjoyable that no one departed until her directive was followed to a “t.” Some of those seen in the dining room included Linda Rebrovick, Marsha Blackburn, Jane Dudley, Amy Joyner, Mary Carol Friddell, Deby Pitts, Vicki Horne, Cathleen Coyne, Rachel Odom and Susan Huggins.

arathon Music Works has hosted plenty of rockin’ shows since they opened their doors in late 2011, and the 2013 Rock the House event was no exception. In a benefit to support the Hospital Hospitality House of Nashville, which provides lodging, meals and supportive services for patients, families and caregivers seeking medical treatment in Nashville, guests were treated to an evening filled with lots of food, fun and dancing.

And the act providing the soundtrack was none other than nine-piece party band Soul Incision, comprised of musicians who haven’t quit their respective days jobs as employees of Vanderbilt University and Medical Center. In addition to playing classic rock, Motown and ’80s funk, Soul Incision featured special guest Jonell Mosser. As the grand finale of Design Week, this highly produced runway show will feature five- to ten-piece clothing collections from junior and senior design students competing for several prizes. Collections range from costume design to menswear and are reflective of what the students hope to pursue after graduation. This year’s showcase will also give an exclusive first look into a new partnership between seven female O’More designers and Hendersonville-based nonprofit DAR Project. The O’More students have designed a spring children’s clothing line, aDARable, which is hand-stitched by 10 Haitian women in extreme need.

The details of the line have been handed over to these Haitian women, who will be responsible for the complete production of the line, learning the art of business and gaining a consistent livelihood in the process. DAR Project founder Martha Montiel-Lewis plans to market the clothing to boutiques throughout Tennessee and online, and all proceeds will go to the Haitian women and their families. The hills are alive Hope in the Hills raises $100,000 for pancreatic cancer research

he demographics for the Linda’s Hope/Hope in the Hills benefit included a core group of 20- to 30-somethings with a sprinkling of Baby Boomers thrown in to keep things interesting. The mix seemed to work for this fourth annual entertaining event, held recently at Marathon Music Works. Alice Strange and Eric Tieles, who served as chairmen, actually met one another through the organization. It seems Eric’s connection was through Executive Director Meredith Waln Crowley, his lifelong friend whose mother Linda—for whom the benefit is named—died from pancreatic cancer, while Alice’s introduction to the organization was through Catherine Loftis Smith, her college chum whose dad, Larry Loftis, succumbed to the same devastating disease.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most deadly cancers, as well as the most underfunded in terms of money dedicated to research. Meredith and Catherine started the benefit on a parking lot rooftop in 2009 in the hopes that people would begin to “stomp their feet” against the disease. Both girls lost their parents at a very early age; hence, the young demographic. It has grown in size ever since with more than 400 passionate young professionals turning out this year to enjoy mac ’n cheese, barbeque chicken sliders, guacamole, poppers and veggie platters from Jonathan’s Grille, along with the signature Purple Passion cocktail (crafted using vodka, Sprite, peach schnapps and blue Curacao). The color purple was quite significant with most of the guests sporting some version of the royal hue. There were also purple sunglasses on every flat surface for non-purple bedecked guests to join in the fun, as well as a marketplace table offering ties, bowties and totes.

The board of this very active organization had set an ambitious goal of raising $100,000 for pancreatic cancer research to go to the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center and they achieved it! The final installment, a check for $50,000, was presented on stage. What an accomplishment! Given a reason to celebrate with rocking band S.O.S., guests of all ages were up on their feet dancing the night away to songs known by all generations. It was a grand way to cap off the evening for the Boomers, who could rest easy knowing they could turn their philanthropic endeavors over to this socially conscious and energetic group of young philanthropists.

Women of honor The Athena Awards recognize outstanding Nashville women

T

he Athena Patrons Society gathered at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center for cocktails and congratulations before the 23rd annual Athena Award Program. The event recognizes the accomplishments of outstanding Nashville women. The Patrons Society represents a cross section of women and men committed to continuing Athenaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s success and spirit in our community.

Co-chairs Tina Boone and Susan Hosbach were prime examples of the passion and support of those attending the event. They enthusiastically greeted patrons and sponsors and produced a wonderful night that honored the past and future of the program, as well as the select group of nominees.

Tina and Susan disappeared downstairs to join the nominees for champagne.

Cissy Daugherty, first Athena recipient, made the opening toast, congratulating all on their achievements. Joining in the toasts were Ruth Johnson, Pat Pierce and Yvonne Wood, all past Athena Award honorees. After raising glasses, the women moved to their seats, eager for the announcements to come.

Margaret Dunlap, Athena Scholarship Committee chair, introduced the eight scholarship recipients. The deserving group of girls and women received nearly $30,000 in awards. Following the introductions, Dell surprised each recipient with a new computer.

Joycelyn Stevenson was introduced as the Young Professional Leadership Award recipient. The well-respected labor and employment attorney serves on the boards of the Council on Aging of Greater Nashville and Nashville Farmersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Market. She also volunteers as a mentor to young women in law school, college and high school.

The highlight of the evening came when Beth Harwell announced the 2013 Athena Award recipient, Charlene Dewey Riley. Charlene is an inspiration to others through her willingness to develop and lead programs addressing health concerns of the public, as well as individuals. She has won numerous awards and honors throughout her medical career. With this most recent award, Charlene joined a select sorority of women worldwide who personify the highest levels within family, vocation and community service.

New heights Laurie Dhue inspires women at Cumberland Heights luncheon

T

he Hillwood Country Club was a hub of activity on a sunny, albeit chilly, afternoon for the Cumberland Heights Women’s Luncheon. News anchor and this year’s guest speaker Laurie Dhue joked that it was warmer in New York than Nashville, an unfortunate yet accurate truth during this first week of spring.

As guests arrived for the afternoon gathering, co-chairs Jamie Granbery and Jennie Garth Lowe welcomed them in the foyer, the latter nursing a sprained ankle that was the result of a spring break accident. Despite the cool temperatures, the club was outfitted for spring with a beautiful assortment of brightly colored fiery orange roses. The arrangements, clustered together in small glass vases, were available for purchase following the luncheon.

The lovely ladies in attendance nibbled on a spring salad dressed with feta cheese, grilled chicken and garlic herb dressing. Always poised and articulate, Grace Clayton emceed the event, which included an invocation from Carrie Fraser, chaplain for Cumberland Heights, and the presentation of the Sheila Keeble Award to Elizabeth Fox. A recovering alcoholic, a dedicated board member and a compassionate counselor, Elizabeth humbly accepted the honor, joking, “This makes me a nervous wreck. I’d rather be at a meeting, I promise!”

Following the award ceremony, Laurie took the stage to share her personal battle with alcoholism. A veteran broadcast journalist who has appeared on Fox News, CNN and MSNBC, Laurie’s tale of addiction and recovery inspired everyone in the crowd. After being publicly outed as an alcoholic against her will, Laurie embraced the opportunity to share her story with others who might be struggling with the disease.

“At the risk of sounding like a candidate for Miss America, I just want to help people,” she explained. Given the heartfelt applause and standing ovation she received from the crowd, it’s obvious her story is helping organizations like Cumberland Heights all over the country.

Ten years of going red Go Red for Women Luncheon brings big hearts together

ashville is no stranger to accolades these days, from our recent “It City” moniker—bestowed by the New York Times, no less—to our long-standing reputation as a friendly Southern destination. But when a 2008 study revealed that Nashville was ranked as the least hearthealthy city for women in America, we knew this was one list we did not want to top in the future.

This is precisely why the American Heart Association, sponsored locally by Saint Thomas Heart and nationally by Macy’s and Merck, knew they had to step it up in the Nashville area. And, as we always do in The Volunteer State, the women of Nashville were quick to answer the call. With a goal to decrease the number of Middle Tennessee women affected by heart disease, the Go Red movement is dedicated to educating women to take control of their health—and their lives—and make heart-healthy decisions for themselves and their families.

The Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center was a sea of red, hosting more than 500 guests—the largest in its decade-long history—for the luncheon.

Workshops, including a leadership forum, heart-to-table cooking demonstrations, free health screenings from Saint Thomas, CPR lessons, fitness demonstrations, style makeovers and photo booths, preceded the anticipated luncheon.

The lunch program included a keynote address from Olympic swimmer Dana Vollmer, who won three gold medals and broke two world records at the 2012 Olympics in London. Dana, who suffered from a heart condition as a child, is a huge supporter of the American Heart Association and an advocate for women’s health. Her mother joined her for the luncheon, which was hosted by Fox 17’s Kelly Sutton.

Event chair Deby Pitts was on hand with many of the hard-working volunteers and supporters of the Go Red movement, all united for the common cause of rallying women to take charge of their heart health.

Cystic Fibrosis Foundation celebrates Nashville’s Top 30 under 30

or a glimpse at the promising future of Nashville’s professional and philanthropic cultures, one needn’t look any further than the Hutton Hotel at the recent Top 30 Under 30 event. A fundraiser for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the evening celebrates 30 young adults who exemplify leadership, generosity and integrity in their professional lives and in the community at large. This year’s group of honorees was a shining example of the spirit of altruism that is so prevalent in Nashville and a beacon of hope for the future of philanthropy in our city.

The Hutton Hotel was packed for the fifth annual fundraiser, as friends and family of the guests of honor arrived eager to show their support. The assortment of desirable silent auction items, including everything from Avett Brothers concert tickets to a Micael-Renee portrait, kept guests busy placing bids as they awaited the start of dinner. As partygoers took their seats, they enjoyed Caesar salad and flat iron steak with mushrooms and ricotta polenta. Espresso ricotta cheesecake was served for dessert. Simple floral arrangements, lanterns and candlelight created the understated elegant décor.

The efforts of co-chairs Andrea Goodman and Allison Harding certainly didn’t go unnoticed as 2013 marked the first year the event brought in over $100,000 for Cystic Fibrosis research, care and education programs. Of course, the dedicated honorees played a vital role in meeting such a lofty goal, particularly Jack Bachman and Stephanie Grant who received the Breath of Life Award for being top fundraisers. Together, they raised over $18,000 for the cause! Special honors also went to Walker Mathews and Elizabeth Bradbury, who each took home the Hitchcock Humanitarian Award for being advocates of CF, and Chris Cochran whose exemplary leadership and generosity earned him the Marchetti Circle of Hope Award.

Every person in the crowd, though, had a reason to be proud, as their involvement with this important event is helping to make a difference for those suffering from Cystic Fibrosis.

Behind the mask Junior League of Nashville unveils Music City Masquerade

W

hile Metro Nashville celebrated its 50th birthday, the Junior League was introducing the city to a brand new event: the inaugural Music City Masquerade. The black-tie gala, co-chaired by Ashley Stringfellow and Catherine Plato, attracted a dapper and diverse crowd to War Memorial.

The event was held on the first truly gorgeous day of spring, allowing guests to enjoy a beautiful cocktail hour outside under a massive tent surrounded by billowing white curtains. White couches, floor lamps and a breathtaking assortment of white hydrangeas, branches, pink tulips and pale roses created a chic and cozy ambiance for patrons to enjoy libations, hors d’œuvres and the sounds of Silver Strings. A collection of chandeliers hung throughout the tent, casting a dreamy glow on partygoers as dusk settled over the city.

The inside of War Memorial was a vision in gold. Big Events utilized gold Chiavari chairs, tablecloths and chargers, as well as plenty of warm candlelight, to design the elegant and sophisticated dining room. The three-course dinner, prepared by Sargent’s Fine Catering, commenced with a colorful salad of purple, green and white asparagus, red lettuce and orange-infused olive oil. Rosemary seared rack of lamb, dressed with parsley mint gremolata and English pea and Parmesan risotto, was followed by mixed berry dessert crepes.

After the Junior League presentation, guests continued dancing and partying well into the night to the tunes of Almost Famous. Old-fashioned blood orange martinis accompanied late party snacks, like mini grilled cheese sandwiches, buffalo chicken in a blanket and bite-sized shrimp burgers. A tower of cake pops, prepared by The Frosted Affair, were awaiting guests on their walk to the valet line at the end of the night, and ladies lucked out with a fun favor from Vera Bradley—a colorful wallet wristlet. The parting gifts were an apt representation of the night: sweet and stylish.

Easter on the half shell Oyster Easter celebrates 51 years of putting the fun in fundraising

A

fter a particularly nasty election year drew to a close, we Nashvillians were eager to participate in a much more palatable election, that of Oyster Easter King and Queen. In addition to being incredibly fun to say—seriously, try saying “Oyster Easter” five times fast—the annual fundraiser, now in its 51st year, benefits the Community Resource Center, which provides household necessities to more than 90 nonprofit organizations throughout Middle Tennessee.

A slightly overcast Saturday afternoon did nothing to sully the spirit of Oyster Easter revelers, who covered the grounds of Travellers Rest with plenty of pastels, seersucker and bunny ears. There was no shortage of creative adult beverages on hand, as King and Queen candidates—Albert Hacker, Dan Stephenson, Eric Wiser, Pate Young, Danielle DeMott, Lynda Jones, Danielle Lares-Bouharoun and Becky Lynn Street—had the entire afternoon to win voters over with clever concoctions such as Jell-O shots, Bushwackers, and a delicacy that belongs at every Easter dinner: liquor-infused marshmallow chicks, also known as Drunken Peeps.

In addition to a delicious spread of food, which, of course, included a bounty of oysters, guests had the opportunity to bid on silent auction items such as an artfully decorated guitar autographed by Gary Allan, a skincare package from Bandywood favorite Woo, exercise deals from Pure Barre and Bikram Nashville and the chance to be an extra on an episode of Nashville. Other extracurricular activities included shopping among the vendor tents for clothing and jewelry, dancing and hula hooping.

At the end of the day, 2012 King Frank Platt and Queen Janice Jones passed their crowns on to their royal successors: Pate Young, president and director of product development for Impact Fitness, was crowned King, and real estate agent Danielle DeMott was named Queen. Long may they reign! Until next Easter, that is.

Former Miss America Kirsten Haglund inspires the crowd at An Evening of Story and Song

he stunning Kirsten Haglund, Miss America 2008, featured on the cover of an Emory University alumni magazine, wasn’t pictured there for the reason one might guess. It was the poignant story of her eating disorder recovery (which she told often during her reign) that captured Kathy Gaston’s attention, along with the beauty queen’s gorgeous smile, of course.

Kirsten’s personal triumph over her horrific disease prompted Kathy, former Board Chair of Eating Disorders Coalition of Tennessee, to invite Kirsten to speak at EDCT’s largest fundraiser, An Evening of Story and Song, even though they had no idea precisely how they would actually pay her. No worries, though, because the former Miss America enthusiastically agreed to travel to Nashville from Atlanta on her own dime to address this avid group of supporters.

Though the night of the event was cold and rainy, co-chairs Jay Joyner, Mary Lee Bartlett and Robin Puryear decided to go for the “atmospheric” look and light all of the fireplaces at Belle Meade Country Club, creating a warm and cozy effect.

“Even if it had been sunny and hot, we were going to light the fireplaces and put the temperature on 50 degrees, regardless,” explained Jay. They kept their Spring Garden Party theme intact, however, with green trellis overlays on ivory clothed tables topped with ivy topiaries in stone urns. The gold Chiavari chairs provided the perfect complement to the gold drapes in the ballroom so that the overall look was spot-on.

A delicious dinner was served, awards were presented and Nashville’s own multi-talented singer-songwriter Kelleigh Bannen provided the evening’s song. The lovely Kirsten, of course, shared her compelling story while Kathy Gaston beamed, grateful that she had picked up the magazine sent to her husband, Marbut.

Sometimes you just have to acknowledge divine intervention.

No place like home Partygoers sport colorful shoes in support of CASA’s mission at Red Shoe Party

L

et’s face it: sometimes a party is all about the chairmen or, at the very least, so completely reflects their personalities that you know that they are the reason it was so much fun. The recent Red Shoe Party benefit for CASA was not only jam-packed with patrons, it was also a mirror image of co-chairs Suzanne Smothers, Jennifer Solesby and Brande Thomas. Because this was not the first fundraising rodeo for this trio, they certainly have it down.

The “ingredients” for this event included yummy hors d’œuvres, a signature ruby red cocktail and a delicious dinner, all provided by Bacon & Caviar Gourmet Catering, a silent and live auction featuring signed celebrity guitars, and the highenergy band, SHAKE SHAKE SHAKE!! who kept guests dancing until the bitter end.

It was evident that all were having a grand time, while remaining cognizant of the reason they were all in attendance. Following the auction, a video highlighting the children assisted by CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) captured everyone’s attention. The evening carried the theme of “I am for the child” with guests invited to “sponsor” a child for the year, so, as one might imagine, there were many, many raised hands in the audience.

This marked the 14th year of the Red Shoe Party, so most of the guests wore some version of The Wizard of Oz’s “There’s No Place Like Home” Dorothy glitter pumps. These served as an excellent reminder regarding the importance of abused and neglected children being placed in safe, permanent homes. There were several pairs of red cowboy boots in the room, including those worn by Suzanne, as well as lots of red tennis shoes and a plethora of sparkling, click-your-heels stilettos on display. There was even a contest for the attendee modeling the best pair!

The Pinnacle at Symphony Place was buzzing from one scenic side to the other.

There was a sultry, smoky vibe to this party with the lights of Nashville encircling the event locale with a sort of smart red glow. The chairmen closed the party down, as all good chairs do. And, of course, you just know that this trio clicked their heels in the shank of the evening as they celebrated their magnificent success.

Crowning glory A colorful night at Crown Affair for FiftyForward

F

iftyForward exists to enrich the lives of Middle Tennessee adults over the age of 50, and the lively Crown Affair, their annual fundraiser, seemed to be doing just that. Held at FiftyForward’s Patricia Hart building, the cocktail party, silent auction and dinner drew a spirited crowd of revelers eager to support this important organization.

During the pre-dinner cocktail hour, guests milled about the tables boasting a slew of impressive silent auction items like a Garth Brooks autographed guitar, a Beatles album autographed by Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr and an original Snoopy sketch from the one and only, Charles M. Schulz. A selection of wine and smaller ticket items were also available, giving everyone in the crowd something to bid on.

Co-chairs Townes and Ellen Duncan worked with Jay Joyner—described by Ellen as “unofficial co-chair extraordinaire”—to design the elegant, tasteful and colorful décor for the night. The brightly colored table linens—alternating solid and patterned tablecloths in various hues of pink, orange, yellow and green—were actually made by Ellen’s mom for Townes and Ellen’s wedding! Potted greenery served as centerpieces for the spring-centric tables. Even the salad, topped with pink grapefruit, avocado and champagne vinaigrette, complemented the vibrant aesthetic.

The delicious feast, prepared by Dani Kates, continued with espresso rubbed beef tenderloin and crab stuffed shrimp accompanied by rosemary new potatoes, haricots verts and caramelized spring onion. Chocolate budino tarts with sea salt served as a delectable dessert.

In addition to being the primary fundraiser for FiftyForward, Crown Affair also served as a way to honor two very special guests. Brian Shelton, an attorney with Bradley Arant Boult Cummings, took home the Shining Star Award, while The Crowning Achievement Award was presented to Patricia Hart, a fitting recipient as she is the namesake for the organization’s building. In addition to the award, Patricia was wowed to discover that a beautiful portrait of herself would grace the building named after her. It was a special and meaningful night for the honorees, as well as those that benefit from FiftyForward’s programs and learning centers.

Beauty in everything Nashville Fashion Week celebrates style in Nashville and beyond

M

usic City was looking particularly fabulous the first week in April when the third annual Nashville Fashion Week gathered the stylish set for five days of runway shows, shopping events, educational panels and fabulous parties. But this fashion week is as beautiful on the inside as it is on the outside—proceeds from Nashville Fashion Week support the Nashville Fashion Forward Fund of The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, which awards a deserving local talent in the fashion field with funds to advance his or her career. The 2012 recipient was Lauren Leonard, whose homegrown Leona line is known far beyond our city limits.

The festivities kicked off on Tuesday night with a runway show at the top of the Pinnacle, where the stunning view of the city provided a chic backdrop to the collections presented by Plenty by Tracy Reese, Tracy Reese, Kal Rieman, Red Doll and Nonoo. Following the runway show, guests walked to new hotspot Pub 5 for the afterparty.

On Wednesday, attendees gathered at the revamped Trolley Barns at Rolling Mill Hill for an outdoor runway show featuring Kat Seaton, Tuft, Black by Maria Silver, Pink Elephants Designs and T. Rains. Let’s give a round of applause to those boys in the T. Rains show who walked the frigid runway in Speedos. Only in fashion, my friends.

Thursday’s daytime runway was held at the Belmont Mansion, showcasing beautiful gowns from Modern Trousseau and Memeka by Gustavo Cadile. A postrunway tea luncheon was held just down the road at Arnold Myint’s blvd. On Friday evening, Grand Avenue Worldwide hosted the runway show, featuring looks from Lagi Nadeau, Abi Ferrin, Leona and Sand.

Saturday’s closing festivities featured the Emerging Designers show, an installation-style runway at Anthem showing capsule collections from Phillip Madison, Elizabeth Suzann, Jennifer Nina Evans, Sarah Jane Estes, Corello, Blooming Leopold and Voyage. The popular club provided the perfect venue for the see-and-be-seen afterparty, where revelers celebrated la bella vita, dancing the evening away.

or the 15th annual Power of the Purse Luncheon, the Schermerhorn was packed with powerful women—and a few brave gentlemen—eager to show their support to the Women’s Fund of the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee. Our city certainly has no shortage of philanthropic females, and this afternoon soirée was the perfect way to celebrate the life-changing impact of these esteemed and generous gals.

News anchor Demetria Kalodimos emceed the festivities, celebrating “15 wonderful years” of the Women’s Fund. Grace Awh, along with co-chairs Coco Kyriopoulos and Suann Davis, highlighted the great things done by the organization over the past year and took a moment to honor Colleen ConwayWelch for her countless philanthropic contributions to the community.

Supermodel turned super-mogul Kathy Ireland was this year’s keynote speaker and while she was as beautiful as everyone expected, she surprised and charmed the crowd by being funny, down-to-earth and self-deprecating. Her personal tale of triumph and trials inspired and encouraged the crowd and the overarching message was clear: “A life without philanthropy is a life without balance.” Looking around the crowd at our community’s female leaders, it’s easy to see there are a lot of well-balanced lives in our midst.

n the heels of Nashville Fashion Week, the Nashville Symphony wowed a couture-loving crowd with a breathtaking show from Monique Lhuillier. The fashion-forward attendees showcased a wide range of chic and stylish spring looks as they posed for red carpet photos under the fading sunlight in the Schermerhorn’s courtyard. Cocktails flowed freely, putting everyone in a festive mood before the premiere of the musical fashion show.

Serving as emcee, Allison DeMarcus looked stunning in a one-shoulder pink chiffon gown with beaded embellishment. As Stephanie Mah, VP of Sales for Monique Lhuillier, said, “It’s pretty signature Monique because she always does these really beautiful colors, very feminine and soft but with a little bit of novelty detail.” Allison wasn’t the only gorgeous gal sporting one of the designer’s fabulous frocks: Karen Elson, supermodel singer-songwriter, chose a sequined embroidered long-sleeve gown for her performance at the start of the show.

Following Karen’s ethereal serenade, the highly anticipated runway show began! A selection of flawless local models strutted the catwalk in an exact replica of Monique’s recent show at New York Fashion Week. Forty looks from the fall collection were paraded down the runway, paired with Monique’s brand new shoe collection. The wintry white opening styles gave way to more dramatic and opulent evening wear in lush shades of emerald green, red and purple. LEAGUES closed out the show with three upbeat tunes from their recent debut album. The cute quartet rocked out on the Schermerhorn stage, prompting front man Thad Cockrell to work the catwalk a bit during the energetic performance. “I had to take advantage of the runway,” he joked. “Short people usually don’t get to use them.”

Once the fashion show was over, the next phase of partying began. The young and fashionable crowd partied in the west lobby at the aptly named Young and Fashionable Party, while the just-as-young and just-as-fashionable VIPs enjoyed a swanky shindig outside on One Symphony Place. space into a Parisian supper club with banquette seating, private cabanas, crystal chandeliers, antique wire birdcages and potted topiaries. Guests nibbled on gourmet “frapas”—French tapas—like potato, fig and bacon puffs, mushroom and spinach crepes, and steak au poivre with truffle potato croquettes. For dessert, chocolate pots de crème, tarte Tatin and lemon curd tarts satisfied sweet cravings. It was a picture perfect night from start to finish where two of Music City’s loves—music and fashion— took center stage.

hen the owner of Deerwood Manor bought the 1980s modern abode and its surrounding acreage 13 years ago, he planned a threephase renovation of the entire property. This successful healthcare entrepreneur had a vision for his new retreat, which would join his spiritual side (he’s a minister’s son) with his contemporary approach to life. couple miles from I-65 in Brentwood, you can travel back 200 years in time. Seven Springs Farm is a picturesque antebellum property first owned by John Cockrill, a member of one of Nashville’s founding families. Revolutionary War soldier John Alford acquired the property in 1807 and built the two-story brick home. The current owner’s grandfather purchased the property, and it has been in the family for more than a century.

The former working farm is now a peaceful retreat.

The gracious, Federal-style home is the cornerstone of the rolling 26-acre estate. Large boxwoods and towering trees, such as oaks, maples and catalpa, have stood for decades. A log cabin and carriage house with five stalls now house guests and cars, respectively.

Inside, the home retains the simple elegance of its beginnings. Wide poplar plank floors, chestnut paneling and detailed millwork enhance character. Unusually

large windows let loads of light into spacious rooms that boast 12-foot ceilings. Additions made in the ’30s flow from the original structure. These include period touches like sleeping porches, a large butler’s pantry and authentic Williamsburg kitchen.

Structures on the property attest to its past as a farm.

The springhouse held milk sold to Jersey Farms Dairy.

Until the ’60s, the smokehouse kept hams, sausage and bacon. Award-winning camellias are still grown in the in-ground greenhouse. An herb garden thrives where vegetables used to grow.

Today, the owners contribute to the story by hosting outdoor parties and weddings. In 1988, an unknown singer named Garth Brooks played for a party in the barn. Now it is time for someone else to continue the legacy of this historic site. It won’t be a chore but a privilege and a joy.

model since the age of 16, Karen Elson is no stranger to the runway.

Her résumé reads like a who’s-who of high fashion, but for this year’s Symphony Spring Fashion show, featuring Monique Lhuillier, Karen took on a bit of a different role. Instead of walking the catwalk, she performed at the end of it singing two songs from her debut album, The Ghost Who Walks. We sat down with the stunning supermodel, mother and singersongwriter to discuss the Nashville Symphony, fashion in Nashville and why she decided to make Music City her hometown.

As an international supermodel, you’ve walked runways all over the world. Tonight, you’re performing two songs. How does it feel to be on this side of a fashion show?

I’ve had it a couple times where I’ve sang. I did it a few years ago for this huge model called Natalia Vodianova. She has a fashion line in Paris and they invited all kinds of people to perform the show. There was Boy George and the Kills, Mark Ronson—he was sort of doing the music—and Beth Ditto, and I performed during the fashion show. It was the first time so it was quite surreal, I’ve got to say. And again, being in Paris, it was pretty surreal. So this is my second time doing it but it’s different because I’m in Nashville. And I think Monique doing a fashion show here, also doing it for the Symphony benefit, it’s sort of tying in all the things that I’m about and all the things that I love. It’s my hometown now, it’s high fashion—there’s nothing middle of the road about Monique—and performing on the Symphony stage, which is just incredible. It’s a dream come true. It’s great.

What do you think of fashion in Nashville?

I think there’s so much that Nashville can do when it comes to fashion. I’ve been talking about that with a few friends of mine recently…and they’ve been telling me about what they’ve been up to and about their panel that they have. And I said, “I’m here if you want an opinion.” Because I do think that there’s real room for people in Nashville, and just in the South collectively…there’s a wealth of talent but people don’t know what to do. And they need to bring in more buyers from department stores, from boutiques and whatnot. They need to bring in more fashion professionals. People who make things happen. Bring them into the town. This town needs to have more people who are higher up in the fashion

industry come here and recognize that there’s so much talent. Start from there and start helping local businesses and local designers have a business plan because they’re creative people and the way fashion designers have to go these days, it’s great that you’re creative but you also need to have a business head. And you also need to have somebody who can guide you and be a mentor creatively but also business-wise. I think Nashville needs a little bit more of the industry to come here and then I believe it could really go far. It could be a pinnacle, I think, for fashion designers within the South. It could be a place because so much is happening here right now. It could be the next level, the next sort of creative outlet for Nashville because obviously you’ve got music covered and now even with the TV show, there are a lot more opportunities for people acting here. And fashion could be the next level of creativity.

What’s your favorite thing about Nashville?

God, that is such a hard question.

What do you love about it in general?

Honestly, I just love how local it is. For me, from living in really big cities since I was 15 years old, there’s something when I come to Nashville that there just seems like there’s a real generous nature about this town that bigger cities have completely lost. You really feel like you can attain something in Nashville, that you can have a goal. Even using Jack [White] as a model at Third Man, the pair of us came here not knowing anyone and then seeing his business model of creating his record label and where it’s moving to now—which I can’t say what he’s up to at the moment but he’s doing really big things—and I think that sort of showcases the potential that Nashville has. It’s a town where you can have an idea and given the right amount of hard work and talent, you can really grow it into something. And that’s what I like about it because in bigger cities sometimes, talented people can get thrown under the bus. It’s just such a good, wholesome place but it’s also fun, as well, and that’s what I like about it.

Tonight’s fashion show benefits the Nashville Symphony and their educational programs. How important is that to you?

Obviously, it’s a huge importance. Musical education for children in general, not only do they say it boosts their intelligence, it also is a creative outlet for so continued on page 90

many children and also just a place for them to thrive. So naturally what the Symphony represents and being in Nashville, it’s a whole other side of music.

Nashville is infiltrated with music but this is a whole other class unto itself. It is as rigorous and as hardcore as you can get. I think it’s important to have that in Nashville because there are so many opportunities out there but there are not so many legitimate ones and the Symphony represents something for me that is legitimate. Not only could you make the next big country star, you could also have the next violinist who’s going to be playing at Carnegie Hall or is going to be performing one day in front of the president so that is equally important.

Therefore, I think it’s very valuable that the Symphony is respected, maintained and benefits like this happen.

What other philanthropic causes are important to you?

There are so many. I’ve been working with one called Citta, and it’s an incredible guy, Michael, and he builds hospitals, schools and various refuges for girls and little boys in India, Pakistan, South America and one big one in the highrisk red-light district between Tibet and China because there’s a lot of human trafficking there. And it’s a very small organization but I’m trying to bring it to Nashville. I’m aiming to do a fundraiser here because I really believe in what he does and it’s a relatively small organization but you feel his commitment. Then there’s the UN Refugee Fund. I’m in a cabaret in New York and we do shows that benefit that, because refugees and trafficking, for me, are very important things. I don’t know if you’ve seen this really amazing documentary called Half the Sky. Actually speaking of that, I really want to screen it at the Belcourt. It’s a New York Times writer called Nicholas Christoph and his wife, but I read the book and then they put out a documentary on PBS. And they asked me to give the song and obviously I was like, “I would absolutely love to give you guys a song because the book and the documentary moved me.” It’s all about inequality of women in the third world. And it offers creative solutions but also shows the gravity of it. The point is that women are just so undervalued but also their economies can be boosted thanks to the power of women. And in certain countries women are not even allowed to work so you’re devaluing half the population and therefore your economy will never thrive because half your society is hidden under lock and key.

How did you get your start in music? When did you first discover a love for music?

Probably when I was a teenager. In England, there is a cultural difference between England and America because when I was growing up, music was everywhere, but good music. I was surrounded by people in my town who were playing music. So it’s always been a part of me, honestly. I started modeling and that was sort of my way out and that’s an incredible opportunity and I still do love it. The irony is you can do both. I think when I first put out my record, a lot of people said, “will you still model?” And it’s like, of course I’m gonna still model. This is what got me to the place where I can even make music at this point. I feel like when I was younger, I was just surrounded by music. Then, I moved to New York and met people who were playing in bands and they asked me to sing and it went from there and the steps kind of progressed.

What’s next for you?

Making another record. That’s the biggest thing. God, the pressure is on me right now to do that. That’s next, but I’ve got a few roadblocks in the way before I can make my next record. I’ve just got a lot of work when it comes to fashion and, you know, that pays the rent so I’ve got to do that. And that’s another thing: I’m 34 and I’m still modeling so I feel like, if they still want me at this point… [laughs] You know in 10 years they might not be calling so I should make the most of it. You never know. It’s fickle. I’m having a good moment in fashion right now so I feel like I’ve got to make the most of it, but while writing a record and then eventually I’ll just tell everyone to leave me alone for a couple of months and I’ll finish it off.

Do you want to record your next album in Nashville?

I have no idea. I’ve been toying around with that idea, but then the idea of maybe just going away somewhere and doing it because I’m so distracted here.

Again, as a mother, I’m constantly...gotta pick up one child from here, gotta pick the other up from there. It’s almost impossible sometimes for me to have any time when I come here. Same thing with New York, I’m just busy. So I don’t know if I need to go somewhere where all the focus is on making the record.

What inspires you?

So many things. I mean, it could be a song I heard the other day that just kinda made me feel something and I want to know, could I write a song like that? That could be one source of inspiration. Or so many different things. What’s going on in my life, just stuff that I need to get out. That’s generally the purpose for me, if I have stuff that’s bugging me that I need to get it off my chest and find a nice lyrical way of getting it off my chest.

ary D. Bartoe and Hunter Oldacre were friends during high school before graduating in 2002 from Harpeth Hall and Montgomery Bell Academy, respectively. They began dating several years after college (University of Georgia for her, University of Alabama for him) when Mary D. moved back to Nashville from Atlanta for a new job opportunity.

Hunter proposed to Mary D. in November 2011 after celebrating her birthday with dinner at her favorite restaurant, Caffe Nonna. He wrapped the ring up like a birthday present to ensure it would be a surprise and got down on one knee just as she opened the box.

They married the following August at First Presbyterian Church with The Reverend Doctor

Todd Jones officiating. The bridal party walked down the aisle to “Simple Gifts” arranged by Sam Levine, and the bride processed to “Highland Cathedral.”

The altar Bible at First Presbyterian was dedicated in 1977 to Hunter’s grandfather W.O. Floyd, Jr. whose birthday was the day of their wedding.

Mary D. wore a gown of Spanish lace by Pronovias with her mother’s cathedral length veil. In her shoe was the same 1971 penny carried by her mother and sister on their wedding days. Her bouquet of white peonies was designed by Knestrick by Design.

The reception at Belle Meade Country Club featured a dinner of seasonal salad with blackberry, raspberry and almonds, grilled vegetables, potatoes au gratin, roasted salmon with peach salsa, and beef tenderloin with rolls. Billie Mochow designed

the six-tiered almond wedding cake as well as the groom’s cake depicting Alabama’s Bryant-Denny Stadium, complete with real LED stadium lights.

The bride and groom danced their first dance to “The Way You Look Tonight” played by 14 Karat Gold. Mary D. then surprised her dad with “Soul Man” which was their song from years of FatherDaughter dances at Harpeth Hall. The band donned printed sunglasses and soon the entire ballroom was wearing them!

After a wedding trip to Antigua, the couple returned to Nashville where Mary D. is Regional Environmental Manager, Skanska USA Building, and Hunter is a real estate developer with Oldacre McDonald, LLC.

Hunting for a cure 03.14.13 The Hollis family took center stage at the premiere of Shelby Hadden’s documentary, Not a Statistic, at the Franklin Theatre. The short film follows the daily life of the Hollis family and their struggle with mitochondrial disease. Guests walked the red carpet and enjoyed a VIP reception where all eyes were on adorable Hunt, the brave little boy who inspired this family to establish the Hunt Michael Hollis Fund as a way to support others dealing with this disease.

am happy for Nashville that it is now officially “hip.” It’s good for business, and I’ll admit, it’s good for the ego. There’s no denying it feels good to be, well, popular.

We have all read (or at least heard about) the articles that gave us their various stamps of approval: GQ cutely calling us “Nowville,” The Times dubbing us the latest “it” city, T&L ranking us 3rd best city in the nation.

We tied for 3rd actually, with none other than New York itself, home to each of these esteemed publications.

Hey down there, they say. Look at you. You’re about as cool as we are!

Various features of our city have impressed them. We headquarter the health industry. We attract educated immigrants. And, of course, we have music—not just commercialized country but all manner of innovative stuff, making us more than just the home of WSIX (said with all due respect, Mr. House, I still love you).

That’s before we even get to our innovative tastemakers, those chefs and designers and artists who have managed to revive various neighborhoods with their creative vision and entrepreneurial spirit. Margot McCormack first tipped us toward the modern food scene, and now we have Lockeland Table, Holland House, Jeni’s, Silly Goose and East Nasty in general, that revitalized neighborhood on yonder side of the river that has contributed greatly to Nashville’s heightened hip quotient. Belle Meade, though lovely, is certainly not responsible. (But then Belle Meade is its own city anyway, right? With its own mayor and highly attentive traffic cops?)

I live in 12South and give our little enclave a lot of credit, too. I remember when my mom used to take us to The Athlete’s House on Belmont, and it felt like the edge of a gritty nowhere. Maybe it had something to do with the iron grates on the windows. In any case, I now stroll or jog by The Athlete’s House pretty much daily, and I frequent the 12 South Taproom not quite daily, though that would be nice. The Black Keys live somewhere around here, and Imogene + Willie are celebrities in their own right.

Sylvan Park, which sounds like it could be the name of the playground at Linden Waldorf, is its own cool little cutout where residents can hit the farmers’ market for free yoga and beets. And Germantown, so elegantly historic and industrially hip, continues to shine beneath Nashville’s glittering skyline.

Any of these neighborhoods is an awesome place to live, Belle Meade included, of course. They have different beats but the song is the same, and when I think of a possible title, I can’t help but see the t-shirts, the ones printed after the flood that read simply, “We are Nashville.” To those who live here, we know—and have known a long time—that Nashville is cool not because of our ginger grits or our bespoke boots, but because we are an inclusive place, a nice place, where strangers speak on the street and bail out each other’s basements and where newcomers rightfully consider themselves native.

Hip, you say? Well, thank you, we’ll take it. So long as you know we are not a trend. We are Nashville.

As we head outdoors for casual patio dining, keep in mind that last-minute grilling isn’t the only option. Instead, consider an everything-isready-early fabulous Tex-Mex feast with a centerpiece of spicy Crock-Pot Chile Verde Pulled Pork. The pork butt is slow-cooked with tomatillos and pickled jalapeños. 1 large onion, chopped 4 cloves garlic, chopped 1/4 cup liquid smoke (any brand) 1 tablespoon ground cumin 2 teaspoons crushed oregano Salt, to taste

Combine all the ingredients except the salt in the Crock-Pot. Cover and cook on low 8 to 10 hours or on high about 6 hours or a combination of both levels until the meat is pull-apart tender. Season with salt, to taste. Makes 12 servings.

Same-sex marriage

B

ig brother is supposed to steer clear of religion.

Can’t tell us where to go to church, if to go to church, what to do once we get there. Can’t tell us to have communion, what holidays to celebrate, what songs to sing off-key. As long as nobody ends up roasted on a spit, separation of church and state means the government steers clear of the cathedral, church or synagogue. Unless we’re talking about marriage. When it comes to marriage, the government has never been shy.

There have been laws passed against polygamy, arranged marriages, underage marriages (unless you’re Loretta or Jerry Lee), interracial and same-sex marriages. When did marriage become the bailiwick of church and government? Nobody really knows. Marriage predates historians so smart alecks like me can pretty much make up any story we want about how the church got involved.

Let’s see, a bunch of wizened old men saw the young folk were having way too much fun (not to mention too many babies) and decided to put a stop to it in the name of social order and all that. (Note: Teenagers were having sex before Planned Parenthood.) Later, the government stepped in in the name of protecting the children and other property (aka women) and here we are thousands of years later with a religious and a civil side of marriage. Both have staked out their claims, the church mostly moral and the state mostly civil.

Each church gets to decide what marriage is (within reason) and who is eligible. No government input needed, thank you. Meanwhile, the

government looks after the contractual obligations of marriage, the business, act–like–a–grownup side: benefits, health insurance, inheritance, divorce, alimony and child support.

I used to think we could settle this whole gay and lesbian marriage thing tomorrow if we could just get the language straightened out. If the government is involved, I argued, don’t call it “marriage” at all, call it a “civil union” whether the couple is straight, gay or lesbian; black or white; Loretta or Jerry Lee. Reserve the word “marriage” for whatever goes on in a church.

That would take care of the practical side of the debate: the state extending to all couples the legal benefits of marriage under the moniker of a “civil union,” leaving couples free to get their union designated a “marriage” by the religion of their choice. This verbal sleight of hand seemed like a good way to drink your Tea Party and have it too; a way to “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s; and to God, the things that are God’s.” (I can’t imagine the Tea Party faithful wanting to give the government the final say over the most intimate of human relationships.)

But for some gays and lesbians calling their union anything except “marriage” is a slap in the face, an insult implying theirs is somehow a lesser union. I get that. Same-sex couples are seeking not only a practical victory, but a total, cultural victory as well: a victory of the heart.

Total acceptance. So they have rolled the dice, seeking all or nothing at all, a society where “a marriage is a marriage is a marriage.” The Supreme Court will decide.

elieve it or not, it’s that time of year again. The Iroquois Steeplechase has arrived once more. The beloved pastime has been a staple of the spring social season since 1941 after Mason Houghland, Master of the Hillsboro Hounds, assembled a team to build a race course at Warner Parks. This day-long affair of horse racing and hat modeling has enriched our community ever since. This month, Nashville keeps Mason’s legacy alive by donning their finest fashions, gathering dear friends together and spending a day at the races. We’ll be there too, of course, to cheer on the horses, visit with our pals and, most importantly, appraise the festive apparel.

This isn’t, after all, strictly a competition for the race track. Nfocus will be awarding prizes in the field for the fabulous fashionistas and tireless trendsetters who wow the crowd with their unparalleled sense of style and those oh-so-impressive hats.
