Tennessee’s First SMILE New and Minimally-invasive Surgery for Myopia (Nearsightedness) is First Major Advance in LASIK Technology in 25 Years, Reducing Dependence on Glasses and Contacts short pulses is used to make small incision in the cornea to create a disc-shaped piece of tissue. This tissue is then removed by the surgeon though the opening which causes the corneal shape to change, permanently changing the prescription. SMILE has a proven track record of success. It has been used internationally since 2011 and more than 750,000 procedures have been performed worldwide. Dr. Wang noted that currently, the procedure has not been approved to treat large amounts of astigmatism and cannot treat farsightedness and that LASIK is still a better option for a majority of the patients seeking laser vision correction.

The first major advance in LASIK technology in 25 years, the SMILE procedure, was performed in Nashville recently at Wang Vision 3D Cataract & LASIK Center by its director, internationally renowned ophthalmologist Dr. Ming Wang, Harvard & MIYT (MD, magna cum laude); PhD (laser physics). “We are extremely very excited to be the first again to introduce the next generation laser correction procedure to the state, helping out patients with this new and minimally invasive procedure,” said Dr. Wang. Myopia is a common eye condition in which close objects can be seen clearly but distant objects are blurry without correction. LASIK and PRK have been the main stay treatments for myopia for over two decades. But SMILE, which stands for SMall Incision Lenticule Extraction, has unique advantages over LASIK. The SMILE surgery is minimally invasive as the surgeon needs only to create a small, precise opening to correct vision. No flap is needed. The laser incision is smaller than 5 millimeters for SMILE, compared to approximately 20 millimeters for LASIK. This

helps the cornea to retain more of its natural strength and reduces the risk of rare flap complications. Dry eye after SMILE is also reduced compared with LASIK, as nerves responsible for tear production during the cornea remain more intact in SMILE. One of the state’s first SMILE patients was Margaret Coleman, 34, a manager of the world-famous Bluebird Café, in Nashville, which was prominently featured in the ABC TV drama “Nashville”, among others. Ms. Coleman has had poor eyesight all of her life, legal blind in both eyes without correction. Ms. Coleman’s 3D Laser SMILE procedure went beautifully and she is thrilled to have her crystal clear new vision and newly gained independence on glasses or contacts and being one of the first patients in the state to receive SMILE!

Dr. Ming Wang, a Harvard & MIT graduate (MD, magna cum laude), is the CEO of Aier-USA, Director of Wang Vision 3D Cataract & LASIK Center and one of the few laser eye surgeons in the world today who holds a doctorate degree in laser physics. He has performed over 55,000 procedures, including on over 4,000 doctors. Dr. Wang published 8 textbooks and a paper in the world-renowned journal Nature, holds several US patents and performed the world’s first laser-assisted artificial cornea implantation. He established a 501c(3) non-profit charity, Wang Foundation for Sight Restoration, which to date has helped patients from more than 40 states in the U.S. and 55 countries, with all sight restoration surgeries performed free-of-charge. Dr. Wang is the Kiwanis Nashvillian of the Year.

“I am so happy!!!”, exclaimed Margaret at her postop visit. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the VisuMax Femtosecond Laser for SMILE procedure for -1 to -8 D myopia with up to 0.5D astigmatism. During a SMILE procedure, a femtosecond laser with precise

our annual Model Behavior photo shoot is one of the longest — and most rewarding — days of the year at Nfocus. Every September, we have the privilege of honoring some of the city’s hardest working philanthropists, and for me personally, spending a day getting to know these remarkable individuals is always uplifting and inspiring. This year, we had several nonprofits nominate more than one potential honoree. We were so compelled by their stories that we decided to change things up. Instead of limiting the nominees to one per organization, we chose multiple representatives for a few, bringing our total of honorees to 14. The three honorary co-chairs of the Conservancy Gala are jointly representing the Parthenon and

Centennial Park, and a husband and wife — who are stunning inside and out — are recognized for their work with The Community Foundation. A pair of friends, ages 92 and 97, are celebrated for their commitment to Abe’s Garden. These two men, Joe Rambo and Herschel Stewart, were perhaps the highlight of the day. They couldn’t stop laughing as we primped them in the makeup chair, sent them to wardrobe and put them in front of the camera. They bragged about their kids, grandkids and great-grandkids, and Joe, a retired Air Force colonel, talked of his service in both World War II and Vietnam. It was an honor for me to get to know everyone, and I look forward to you doing the same. Read more about all 14 honorees in Model Behavior on page 44. BY NaNcY FloYd

behind the scenes

Sharon Roberson Sharon Roberson has been involved with many nonprofits throughout her career, but it wasn’t until last year that she jumped in full time as the president and CEO of the YWCA of Nashville and Middle Tennessee. Sharon — the first African-American president and CEO of our YWCA — believes that her responsibility in this position is first and foremost to fully live the organization’s mission statement of “eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all.” Sharon loves animals, and one of her goals is to open a kennel at their domestic violence shelter so people with pets can live there. She’s working toward the YWCA having a place at the table in social justice issues around the community and hopes to host a youth summit where children can talk about race-related bullying. She wants the YWCA to be a welcoming and safe community for everyone and is constantly finding new ways to educate people on their core values. A great way to find out more about the YWCA is at their signature Academy for Women of Achievement event on Oct. 19. In the meantime, we’ve asked Sharon to tell us a bit about herself and a few of her favorite things. by Wesley H. Gallagher photograph by Daniel Meigs

What do you enjoy most about your job? The ability to get up every day and influence my community in a positive way. What is one thing people might not know about the YWCA? First and foremost, we are not a gym. Second, the YWCA offers more domestic violence services than any other organization in the state — from operating the largest domestic

For lunch, Table 3 and for dinner, Mere Bulles

Where do you like to go for a quiet getaway? Any place with a great running path What is the annual fundraising event you look most forward to every year and why? The Academy for Women of Achievement. It is a true privilege to honor women who have given so much of themselves to improve the lives of others and make a positive impact on the Nashville community. This year marks 119 years of the YWCA empowering women and 26 years of honoring their achievements through AWA, with the awards ceremony taking place on Thursday, Oct. 19. What is the best place in town to bike, hike or run? Percy and Edwin Warner parks. These parks are such a gift to our community. What is one luxury you can’t live without? Eve of Janus Mother/Son Luncheon 7.21.17

The Eve of Janus Marshalls and their moms arrived at Jamie Granbery’s house for the second-ever Mother/Son Luncheon, where they enjoyed pulled pork sandwiches, tasty sides and fudge pie from Martin’s Bar-B-Que Joint. Co-chairs ML Davis and Diana Day-Cartee spoke to the group as did Meg Rush, chief of staff at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital, who talked about its pediatric services — a reminder to all that the Eve benefits the Tri Delta Pediatric Cancer Endowed Research Fund at the hospital. by Holly Hoffman photographs by Eric England

Everyone was feeling très bien at the TPAC Gala Patrons Party held at Sharalena and Dick Miller’s home. In anticipation of the upcoming gala and its An American in Paris theme, the party was a celebration of all things French. Guests snacked on French dip sliders, mini quiches and delectable cheeses around tables outfitted with Eiffel Tower centerpieces and took a twirl in a themed photo booth before the night concluded. by nancy floyd photographs by mimosa arts

Man of the Hour Easter Seals names Ben R. Rechter Nashvillian of the Year

Daniel Tidwell, Kevin Crane, Ben R. Rechter

T

he Hilton in downtown Nashville was packed with community leaders, business associates and well-wishers eager to pay tribute to Easter Seals’ Nashvillian of the Year, Ben R. Rechter. The community advocate and former president of Rogers Group has positively impacted Nashville since he first moved to Music City in 1972. His philanthropic accomplishments are too numerous to list, but he currently serves as a trustee of The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, an emeritus board member of Nashville Public Television and a member of the board of directors of the National Museum of African American Music to name a few. Additionally, he has worked closely with a number of local organizations, from the Nashville Area Chamber of Congress to the Nashville Public Education Foundation. Nashvillian of the Year is a notable addition to the extraordinary number of awards Ben has been given for promoting civic inclusivity and equality. After everyone enjoyed a delicious three-course dinner, a touching slideshow introduced the audience to the Cates family and their beautiful little girl with Down syndrome. The family showcases Easter Seals’ mission to help families living with disabilities reach their full potential. Following the slideshow, the award presentation opened with a video of notable Nashvillians giving their humorous and poignant personal testimonies regarding Ben’s unmatched service to the city. Ben accepted his award with humility and thanked his family and the Nashville community for supporting him over the past 45 years. Easter Seals Tennessee continues to serve as an indispensable resource for families in our state and across the nation. Ben’s life exemplifies their mission to remove obstacles facing people living with disabilities and to create more opportunities for them to live life fully and independently. With proceeds from events like Nashvillian of the Year, Easter Seals can continue to support and encourage millions of Americans living with disabilities. by Kathleen Albritton photographs by Daniel Meigs

Happy Plate Club Nourish brings foodies together for The Nashville Food Project

W

hen an amazing lineup of the South’s most innovative chefs pool their collective culinary talents for an evening of delicious food and fine wine, people take notice. Such is the case with Nourish, the annual event benefiting The Nashville Food Project and its work to alleviate hunger in our city. At this year’s dinner, Margot McCormack of Margot Café and Bar and Marché Artisan Foods led a marvelous lineup of local female chefs. Guests filled MBA’s Lowry Hall for a peppy cocktail hour where they cooled off with Matua wines and noshed on crowd-pleasing appetizers from Laura Wilson, owner of Citizen Kitchens. When the time came, it took little encouragement to get this hungry crowd to the dining hall and seated at one of three community tables decorated with runners of sorghum and millet and set with multiple glasses for pairings from Treasury Wine Estates that would accompany each course. The exceptional dishes included ingredients from the food project’s Growing Together Farm. Two Ten Jack’s Jessica Benefield garnished her Japanese salad greens with pickled vegetables and pears and made a tart dressing from roselle leaves, and Henrietta Red’s Julia Sullivan delivered beef carpaccio topped with pesto and a salad of squash and edible flowers. Margot’s highly anticipated main course of roasted chicken and summer vegetable lasagna with herb and heirloom tomato salad wowed everyone. Lemon blackberry shortcake from City House pastry chef Rebekah Turshen gave the satiated crowd a rush of sugar to ensure spirited bidding on live auction items like dinner for 20 with chef Tandy Wilson at The Nashville Food Project farm. A second important part of the project’s mission is bringing people together to grow, cook and share nourishing food with the goal of cultivating community. In honor of board member and Nourish founder Thomas Williams, they announced the creation of the Thomas Williams Golden Skillet Award and named Margot the first recipient of the annual prize for her continued dedication to inventive eating.

Old Hollywood Luxe Celebrating the Golden Age of Glamour at An Art Deco Affair

T

he Frist took a trip back to the Golden Age of Glamour at their fifth annual An Art Deco Affair. Co-chairs Carolyn Griffin and Jessica Kinnard led an impressive host committee dedicated to making art accessible to the greater Nashville community. Proceeds from this anticipated night support the upkeep and maintenance of The Frist, one of Nashville’s most beloved cultural and artistic spaces. More than 400 attendees decked themselves out in luxe Old Hollywood attire and enjoyed cocktails and hors d’œuvres in the Grand Lobby. Frist supporters of all ages donned glamorous head pieces, slinky silk dresses and bright red lipstick. The décor put a modern spin on the building’s 1930s Art Deco architecture with patterned gobo lights framing the auditorium. In the Grand Lobby, large marquee letters spelling out #artdeco created the perfect backdrop for photos as the attendees made their way into the party with DJ AyDamn setting the mood for the evening. Guests sipped on the signature cocktail, the New-Fashioned, and enjoyed light bites provided by Morph Hospitality Group, the culinary geniuses behind Chauhan Ale & Masala House, Tànsuo˘ and The Mockingbird. From gol gappa shots to chocolate chip cookies, the menu offered something for everyone. Although the food and cocktails were enticing, the best parts of the night were the gallery talks by the museum’s curator of interpretation, education and outreach, Ginny Soenksen. The current exhibits, State of the Art: Discovering American Art Now and Ancestral Modern: Australian Aboriginal Art from the Kaplan & Levi Collection, were by far the stars of the show. An Art Deco Affair continues to be one of the best nights out of the year for art-lovers and Frist supporters alike.

Granting Wishes Simple wishes come true at Wine & Wishes

I

f the Young Leaders Board of Make-A-Wish Middle Tennessee hoped for glorious summer weather during its wondrous Wine & Wishes event, they certainly received it. Following a midday deluge, the skies cleared, washing away weeks of scorchingly high temperatures in Nashville. More than 450 snappily dressed millennials arrived in droves at Belle Meade’s Nashville mansion on an unusually crisp August evening. Wine & Wishes has grown like lush grapes in a well-tended vineyard since the inaugural event six years ago, when it was first held in the conference room of a local law firm. Talk about success! Make-A-Wish President and CEO Beth Torres and this year’s event chair, Drew Smyth, can certainly raise a glass to the Young Leaders’ efforts, which produced 2017’s smashingly tasty vintage, so to speak. As one volunteer noted, this year’s event was a “huge step up” from the party’s humble origins. With Alfa Romeo Nashville as the presenting sponsor and the Erik Blue Band rocking out by the glowing lights of the home’s gorgeous pool, it was sure to be a top-drawer night. Despite the fact that Wine & Wishes didn’t begin until 8 p.m. — this crowd’s preferred kick-off time — plenty of guests gathered around G Catering’s tempting hors d’œuvres, including pan-seared asparagus, other miniature summer vegetables, delectable cheeses, sliced Italian meats and grapes, of course. The hot-off-the-grill sliders, dripping with melted pimento cheese, and the Mini Fish Bowl Jell-O shots with tiny umbrellas attracted takers by the dozens. Ashley Warrington assembled a spectacular silent auction with requisite trips to wine country as well as signed guitars from Luke Bryan and Keith Urban while Kendall Mitchell Gemmill focused on securing contributions for the evening’s now-famous and very popular Wine Wall. The shiny wrapped bottles, displayed in riddling racks and sold blindly for $20 each, provide the event’s annual spark of additional fun, reminding the lucky purchasers that the simplest of wishes often do come true.

Like a Fine Wine A dazzling evening at 21c for the l’Eté du Vin Patrons Dinner

T

he staples of the l’Eté du Vin Patrons Dinner — great wine, a delectable multi-course dinner, good conversation and a lively auction — remained the same, but the event had a fresh new energy this year thanks largely in part to its new locale. Hosted at the recently opened and ultra-hip 21c Museum Hotel, the intimate dinner sizzled with an extra spark of anticipation as guests explored the galleries of the art museum-meets-hotel prior to the meal. Celebrating the wines of Napa and Sonoma counties, Nashville Wine Auction welcomed six vineyards to this year’s event: Davies, Schramsberg, Hirsch, PlumpJack, Odette and Cade. The stars of the Patrons Dinner, these wineries provided a total of 15 unique pairings for the evening. With Jasmine Hirsch, Monique and Hugh Davies and John Conover representing the six wineries, guests not only sampled these exquisite wines but learned more about the region and winemaking processes for each. The night commenced with glasses of J. Schram Rosé 2008, Hirsch Vineyards Estate Chardonnay 2015 and Cade Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2015 circling the room on silver platters, complemented by hors d’œuvres prepared by the in-hotel restaurant, Gray & Dudley. The tiny bites were only a hint of the decadence that was to come. Instead of all of the patrons dining together, this year’s event was split between two galleries, one serving the wines of Davies, Hirsch and Schramsberg and one featuring the wines of PlumpJack, Odette and Cade. Executive chef Levon Wallace and his team prepared two different four-course dinners to complement the wines being served, with indulgent flavors running the gamut from tobacco-cured duck to black cocoa rigatoni with lamb ragù to braised short rib with bourbon barrel spices. In between each course, the vineyard representatives shared insight into each wine and fascinating tidbits about how it was made. Co-chair Loren Chumley joked earlier in the evening, “I always like saying I’m drinking for a good cause!” It was a sentiment shared by all in attendance. The wines were spectacular, but the mission of Nashville Wine Auction to fund cancer research is even sweeter.

California Love The best of the West Coast celebrated at l’Eté du Vin

T

he 38th annual l’Eté du Vin closed with its traditional gourmet dinner and wine auction at the Loews Vanderbilt Hotel. This year’s event, labeled California Collectibles, welcomed six esteemed winemakers from Sonoma and Napa counties. Co-chair Loren Chumley exclaimed, “Why have one wine when you can have six!” Nashville’s most passionate oenophiles agreed and jumped at the opportunity to attend one or all of the events for a chance to enjoy, and buy, the highly sought-after wines. On this final night of the three-day fundraiser for Nashville Wine Auction, bartenders hustled to satisfy revelers enthusiastic to imbibe in the evening’s featured wines while seasoned attendees headed for their tables to drop off bottles from their own cellars. (The event is well-known for its longstanding BYOW policy — that’s Bring Your Own Wine.) First they paused to take in the ballroom, which resembled a vineyard tasting room. Board member Marjorie Feltus-Hawkins and crew accomplished the look with everything from the center tables custom made by Doug Regen to the casual linens and centerpieces plump with sunflowers. Loren and co-chair Michael Sontag welcomed the boisterous group, reminding them of the mantra for the night: “Bid high and bid often.” Special guest Hugh Davies underscored the effervescent mood by sabering a 9-liter bottle of his winery’s Schramsberg Blanc de Blanc 2010, which he proceeded to share with anyone holding an empty flute. Shortly after, as guests took the first bites of salad, auctioneer Fritz Hatton opened bidding on the first of 65 live auction items and persisted nonstop through the multi-course dinner, pausing only for the customary fried chicken break. L’Eté du Vin is always a lively affair with touching moments, and this year was a tribute to the late Spencer Hayes who hosted the first wine auction at his home in 1980. The event has grown exponentially since then — raising more than $21 million toward the fight against cancer — and has always been filled with good food, great wine and close friends.

A Family Affair Celebrating a history of tradition at the Eve of Janus

T

Hal Cato, Joanne Cato, Michael Burcham

he 47th Eve of Janus, the oldest fundraiser benefiting the Tri Delta Pediatric Endowed Research Fund at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, was held on a scorchingly hot evening at the multi-level Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. This beloved rite of passage for collegeaged ladies in beautiful long white dresses reads like a large familial group hug. They are referred to as Signs and the escorts in white ties, their Marshalls. This year, there were 75 Signs and 80 Marshalls, so the extra five Marshalls re-introduced five of the young ladies based on their Tri Delta family history and their mothers and grandmothers serving as past Eve of Janus chairs. This nod to the multiple generations in attendance only added to the familial atmosphere. After a short cocktail hour, guests were treated to a lovely dinner held in the spacious event hall. Large cylindrical vases and short crosswind containers showcased white phalaenopsis orchids, hydrangeas and calla lilies atop tables dressed in black cloths. The simple, yet sophisticated, décor — a product of the good folks at Big Events — was stunning. Tracy Kornet was the evening’s emcee, and Devang Pastakia served as honorary chair with Briar Mays as junior honorary chair. This year’s co-chairs, Diana Day-Cartee and ML Davis — along with past chairs and local Delta Delta Delta alumnae — have helped to raise over $4 million since 1970. In fact, ML’s mother-in-law, Melissa Davis Baize, attended the first ball held at the former Vanderbilt University Faculty Club, now known as the University Club. After dinner, guests moved to the comfy CMA Theater, where two substantial vessels, filled with the same white floral combination, anchored both sides of the stage. The lights were dimmed, and the true reason for the evening began. The lovely young Signs were presented one by one to adoring mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, grandparents and friends, providing a lifetime of memories for all to treasure. by Gloria Houghland photographs by Eric England continued on page 38

Model Behavior Every September, we celebrate the men and women in our community who exemplify model behavior through their generosity and support of local nonprofits. This year, we're honoring a whopping 14 men and women who were nominated for their selfless service and leadership of 10 of Nashville's finest charitable causes. Ranging in age from 31 to 97, these individuals are as diverse and unique as the causes they represent, which better our city through everything from the arts to cancer research to diaper delivery. Modeling the latest fall fashions, these men and women prove that serving others is always in style.

Stephaine and Joseph Walker Stephaine Walker, a Vanderbilt neonatologist, and her husband, Bishop Joseph Walker of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, have made an indelible mark on The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee since they became involved three years ago. Impressed with its capacity for connecting generosity with need, they engaged the organization to manage The Drs. Joseph and Stephaine Walker Scholarship Fund, which awards scholarship grants to African-American students. They appreciated that the foundation could provide students who may not receive a Walker grant the access to scholarships and grants through other funds it oversees. Stephaine continues to be an active volunteer and serves on the board. Joseph works with the Nashville Digital Inclusion Fund, which makes internet access more affordable and available to our community’s citizens, and conceived the Nashville Unites Fund, which works to ensure Nashville is prepared to respond to some of the racial, socio-economic and neighborhood issues that have affected other cities.

The mission of the T.J. Martell Foundation is to fund innovative medical research focused on finding treatments and cures for cancer.

Marci Houff As an ovarian cancer survivor, Marci Houff didn’t want to sit on the sidelines and watch other women succumb to this deadly disease. Instead, she decided to get in the game, partnering with T.J. Martell Foundation to create an original fundraiser devoted solely to raising awareness of the disease and raising money for new advances in treatment. In 2013, Chic Awearness was born. The annual event — celebrating its fifth anniversary on Sept. 25 at Prima — brings together cancer survivors and loved ones for a celebratory evening of fashion and friendship. Each year, 22,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer and 14,000 die from the disease. “Through Chic Awearness and the T.J. Martell Foundation, along with the community’s support, we can help fund research to change these numbers,” Marci says. With over $200,000 raised thus far through the event, Marci and her team are well on their way.

Studio Tenn Studio Tenn’s mission is to create compelling musicals, plays, concerts and experiences through artful storytelling and innovative design and to cultivate a meaningful understanding and appreciation of the artistic process in performers and audiences of all ages through education and engagement.

Matt Logan Actor, director, illustrator, designer, costumer — there are many titles that apply to Matt Logan, but in Nashville and Franklin, the title he’s perhaps best known by is artistic director of local theater company Studio Tenn. A Tennessee native, Matt worked on Broadway for years in costuming and casting for productions like The Lion King, The Phantom of the Opera and Spamalot. In 2009, he returned to the South and founded Studio Tenn in Franklin with Emmy Award-winning producer Philip Hall and Broadway actress Marguerite Hall. “The driving goal behind our company is to enrich, inspire and entertain Middle Tennessee,” he says. Each year, the company does exactly that, producing a compelling and thought-provoking blend of original and popular works. “The biggest blessing I experience is hearing from patrons who never liked theater but have now become committed season ticket holders,” he says. “Theater really does inspire a community to view the world differently.”

Aly Greer Aly’s sense of empathy heightened after the birth of her first child. Grateful for her extensive support system, she would hold him at night and wonder how less fortunate parents managed to buy essentials like diapers, which cannot be purchased with food stamps. That’s when she became involved in the Nashville Diaper Connection. With her second child on the way, she is even more determined to see that babies in need have a steady stream of diapers. As director of donor engagement on the allvolunteer staff, she has considerably raised awareness of the diaper need in Nashville, and increased donations of funds and diapers have followed. One message she shares: “The cycle of poverty as it relates to the cost of diapers is devastating. We know about hunger and homelessness, but diaper need is new to the conversation. Having clean diapers is just as crucial as food on the table and a roof over your head.”

The Conservancy for the Parthenon and Centennial Park The Conservancy’s mission is to preserve, enhance and share the Parthenon and Centennial Park so that all future generations may benefit from these enriching cultural and educational landmarks.

Ellen Martin, Hope Stringer and Clare Armistead It’s hard to find a nonprofit in Nashville that hasn’t been touched or impacted in some way by Clare Armistead, Ellen Martin and Hope Stringer. The community advocates show their support to worthy causes ranging from the performing arts to our public spaces. When it comes to The Conservancy for the Parthenon and Centennial Park, these three women collectively have served in nearly every possible capacity and on every possible committee. From chairing the Conservancy Gala to sitting on the board of directors, Clare, Ellen and Hope have played a major role in the preservation and restoration of these Nashville gems. To thank them for their service, the organization has named the three women the honorary chairs of the Conservancy Gala on Nov. 4. “As Nashville grows exponentially, the Parthenon and Centennial Park are important reminders of how this community has always been aspirational in its ideals,” Ellen says. Thanks to their devotion to the cause, these iconic landmarks will be preserved for generations to come.

Greenways for Nashville

Greenways for Nashville’s mission is to create, preserve and promote a system of greenways in Nashville and Davidson County. The organization advocates preservation and protection of natural and cultural areas, development of community recreational opportunities, and acquisition of land for preservation as greenways and parks.

Steve Sirls Steve Sirls first became involved with Greenways for Nashville in the mid ‘90s, and he remains as excited about the initiative as ever. “We are rewarded by worthwhile work and the fruit of our efforts when we see people of all ages absolutely loving the greenways,” he says. Without his dedication, there would be fewer magical green trails threading through our city. In the beginning, Steve advocated for the concept and raised funds to make it a reality. He played an essential role in getting the Richland Creek Greenway built. As a board member, he has hosted events, raised considerably more funds and helped found Greenways for Nashville’s signature event, Dinner on the Bridge, co-chairing it twice and again this year at the 11th affair on Sept. 28. He is most excited about the long-awaited opening of the I-440 Greenway, the most recent example of how the vision, patience and perseverance of this highly motivated group has enhanced our lives long before we became It City.

Faith Family Medical Center seeks to follow the commitment of people of faith to provide hope and medical care for the working uninsured and other underserved by meeting their physical, emotional and spiritual needs.

Laura Binkley When Laura Binkley was looking for a volunteer opportunity where she could put her expertise as an OB-GYN to use serving those in need, a colleague pointed her toward Faith Family Medical Center, an organization that provides medical care to uninsured and underinsured residents of Nashville. For five years, Laura has been providing free gynecological clinic services once a month to women who wouldn’t otherwise have access to this type of medical care. As if that’s not enough, she also performs surgery free of charge for patients who don’t qualify for financial assistance. “I feel that working with [the] Faith Family community helps me understand the barriers to quality health care and how to help patients get access to the care they need,” Laura says. “The staff at Faith Family is so caring. I am lucky to be a part of their community!”

Abe's Garden Abe's Garden is establishing a national model of residential and day care programs for those impacted by Alzheimer's disease. The goal is to transform care for those affected by Alzheimer's and other related dementias throughout the United States by providing an unprecedented level of care.

Joe Rambo and Herschel Stewart Joe Rambo and Herschel Stewart are proof that it’s never too late in life to serve others. At 97 and 92, the two men are devoted volunteers at Abe’s Garden, a residential community for those suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia. When Abe’s Garden opened its doors in 2015, Joe and Herschel — who reside at nearby Park Manor — volunteered to lead a weekly men’s discussion group. “As Abe’s Garden residents grew in number, it became obvious that a variety of activities would enhance the lives of those with memory difficulties,” Joe says. “As the men’s club has developed, I and my co-volunteer leaders have learned to work together to encourage the residents to participate as much as possible. I’ve found that despite memory problems all residents can respond at times.” And although the men are serving at a local level, they recognize the bigger impact of their work. “The fact that Vanderbilt University is working with Abe’s Garden to study Alzheimer’s disease and dementia difficulties makes what we are learning of global importance,” Joe says. “I am proud to be a part of it.”

Junior League of Nashville

the fashion: Vince Camuto floral print dress (Nordstrom)

The Junior League of Nashville is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.

Krystal Clark The Junior League of Nashville is responsible for founding many nonprofit organizations in our community and for training women prepared to volunteer and lead. One of those women is Krystal Clark. When she moved here in 2011 to become the director of student leadership at Vanderbilt University, she also transferred her league membership to Nashville to engage in her new community. Within no time, she jumped into league leadership roles including provisional advisor, provisional co-chair, vice president of membership, active director on the board of directors, president-elect elect and president-elect. For 2017-2018, she is serving as president, the first woman of color and the first African-American woman to hold this position in the organization’s 95-year history. As a member, Krystal appreciates the difference the Junior League makes in the lives of others, and as president, she wants the league to continue to be a driver of community change.

National Multiple Sclerosis Society

the fashion: Wool steel blue suit, Alden long wing bluchers, and red, white and blue plaid button-down (J. Crew)

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society exists to help people affected by MS live their best lives by stopping MS in its tracks, restoring what has been lost and ending MS forever.

Chris Blair Giving back plays an important role in everything Chris Blair does, both personally and professionally. As the longest standing board member of the Mid South Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, he coordinates the organization’s annual Bike MS: Bike to Jack & Back (a two-day, 120-mile bike ride to and from the Jack Daniel’s Distillery). He started riding in the event for fun, but after learning more about the MS Society, he began helping with corporate funding and now oversees all of the logistics, planning and fundraising efforts for the ride. His venue, The Listening Room Cafe, is a corporate sponsor every year and provides the food and music for the Vibe Tent at the end of the ride. Chris stays involved with many nonprofits and, through The Listening Room, he frequently teams up with charities to host events, donating the profit from all ticket sales. He continues volunteering because he says, “Being involved with something like [the MS Society] keeps you grounded … it makes you appreciate what you have and fight harder to help others.”

h Claire Akin marries A. Colli er Town send

A week after her graduation from Harpeth Hall in 2010, Elizabeth Akin met Collier Townsend from Birmingham, Alabama, at freshman orientation at Samford University, where he played football and she was a cheerleader. In 2016, he proposed, on one knee, in front of both families at The Palm Restaurant. The couple married in April in The Chapel at Seaside in Seaside, Florida, with her youth minister, the Rev. Mark DeVries, officiating. A string quartet played as a bagpiper led Elizabeth into the chapel on the arm of her father and then out with her groom. Elizabeth wore an Olia Zavozina gown custom designed for her — and named the Elizabeth Claire. Mother-of-pearl sequins arranged in a floral over-

lay created a lace effect over the entire dress. She carried a textured bouquet of creamy white roses, peonies and anemones with a collection of greenery including olive branches, eucalyptus and rosemary. The reception was at Kelly Green in Alys Beach under a huge clear tent. Decorations by Nouveau Design included walnut farm tables with Moravian stars and Moroccan lanterns hanging above. Alternating tables bore arrangements of either white cherry blossom branches in shallow slate bowls or mixed bouquets in blue and white marble containers. The dinner by Townsend Catering featured stations for crab cakes with corn relish, shrimp and

Parmesan grits, beef tenderloin, caprese salad, roasted vegetables and build-your-own fish tacos. Confections on the Coast designed the five-tiered French vanilla cake filled with mascarpone cheese and white chocolate decorated with pearlized sugar hydrangeas, peonies, lilies and sweet peas. Friends packed the dance floor until 14 Karat Gold of Atlanta played the last note on the clear, 75-degree evening. After a wedding trip to Puerto Vallarta, the newlyweds returned home to Birmingham where Collier, who has his master’s in accounting, is a CPA at RSM. Their parents are Sheila and Bill Akin of Nashville and Carol and Alan Townsend of Birmingham. by Sandy Nelson

Creature Comforts The store is set up like a comfortable home, but everything is for sale — sofas with throw pillows, plush rugs and coffee tables on which, save for the designer pedigree, visitors might be tempted to prop up their feet. Think: a cross between Design Within Reach and a general store, albeit a hip one. A synthetic-free Japanese incense sets the mood while The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society on vinyl shares a hutch with a Shinola Audio turntable.

Wilder Etudes

photographs by Zachary Gray for wilder etudes

The newly opened Edgehill Village boutique Wilder Etudes is — quite literally — a work in progress. Every three months, the store’s theme will change. The current theme, inspired by Pantone’s 2017 Color of the Year, is green — whether that specifically means the color green, eco-friendly or as in a “green” (or new) designer. Like the original Wilder in Germantown, the new concept store carries a wide range of carefully selected items, everything from cool Scandinavian sunglasses from Han Kjøbenhavn to Loll Designs outdoor furniture crafted from recycled milk jugs. The choices are as creative as the store’s owners, Josh and Ivy Elrod — he a former member of the Blue Man Group and she a one-time Radio City Rockette. After living in New York for years, the couple decided to relocate to Josh’s hometown of Nashville to raise their two kids, ages 2 and 5, and launch a business. by Whitney Clay

Make Yourself at Home

Wild, Wilder West

On the Horizon

Although Wilder Etudes carries high-end, designer merchandise, the atmosphere is decidedly low-key. “We had people who came in the other day,” says Josh, “and they took their shoes off. They were looking at rugs, and they all sat on the floor, and I was like, ‘I love this. This is what I want — to break down some of the older formality of retail.’ ” Ivy agrees. “For us, we’re so psyched to be in environments where you feel sort of enveloped and loose.”

The Elrods’ unique perspective has gotten them noticed with an article in Architectural Digest and a write-up on the Racked website. The latter led to an inquiry from an L.A. entrepreneur anxious for the green theme to be featured at the newly opened Platform retail space, which includes Ae-sop cosmetics as well as SoulCycle. The developers are leaving a few spaces open for short-term leases, which coincides perfectly with Ivy’s goal to move portions of each theme to other cities “almost like a gallery show.”

The fall/winter theme will be Presence/ Presents and will incorporate dance. The idea of a concept store — where the visitor is invited to experience, not just shop — seems to be a good fit for Nashville’s evolving retail market. And it’s a perfect fit for the store’s innovative owners. “Because our nature is to be ephemeral and outside-the-boxy,” says Ivy, “ ... the point isn’t this strict box and how does this fit in. It was sort of a place in which to study and to play.”

Healthy Choice What’s cooking at Lulu and Avo by Carrington Fox

Avo 3 City Ave. 615-329-2377 eatavo.com

Lulu 313 Jefferson St. 615-540-0444 lulunashville.com

Avocados don’t grow naturally in Nashville, where the zone 7 climate can’t sustain the tropical trees, but just as alligator pears have become ubiquitous and beloved staples of the Southern diet, so has an appetite for plant-based cuisine begun to grow in our increasingly health-conscious hearts. Housed in the innovative village of shipping containers near the 28th/31st Avenue Connector, Avo celebrates the beauty and vitality in a plant-focused diet, with a range of recipes as artistic and playful as they are nutritious and energizing.

photographS bY ERIC ENGLAND

Nestled in Germantown in the shadow of the new Sounds stadium, Lulu’s airy dining room is so cheerful, chic and lovely that it’s no wonder it is the subject of so much ebullient social media. Search the vast thread of Lulu pics on Instagram and you’ll get the gist of Miranda Pontes’ new fast casual enterprise, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Ricotta pancakes and eggs for breakfast, grain bowls and burgers for lunch and free vegan ice cream for dessert? With such a whimsical array of elegant indulgences, it’s obvious why Lulu’s credo, blazing from a neon sign on the crisp white subway tile, is “Yes To All.”

Annie Choo took over ownership of Avo in February and has been tweaking the menu, adding more warm dishes to the formerly allraw repertoire. (That’s a funny temperature turnabout for a woman who grew up in the sushi business. Annie’s family operates Samurai Sushi and Sushiyobi.) With help from executive chef Anthony De George, Annie crafts lunch and dinner menus brimming with plantbased recipes such as kimchi spring rolls, mushroom tartare toast, zucchini pasta verde and pad thai with kelp noodles. Meanwhile, the eponymous avocado appears on toast with hempseed pesto and pickled vegetables as well as in the best-selling avocado margarita.

Lulu is the latest splash by Miranda — whose culinary catalog has included Frothy Monkey, Burger Up, Prima and Josephine — and the first nameplate of Gather Hospitality, a partnership between Miranda and real estate developer Doug Martin. With a culinary assist from Fido alum Derek Martin, Lulu offers a succinct roster of healthyminded options that are anything but abstemious. Pancakes with blackberry jam and cinnamon butter, avocado toast with radishes and chilies, and brown rice bowls with carrot-ginger dressing and salmon arrive like colorful still lifes to be devoured — but not before they are photographed, posted to Instagram and tagged #YesToAll.

Key West may be at the end of the Overseas Highway, but it is far from a dead end. The island paradise — only four miles long and two miles wide — is packed with more than its fair share of diverse cultural influences, offbeat residents and quirky charms. Built in the 1800s on fortunes made by salvaging shipwrecks, it has enchanted legions of fishermen, renegades, artists and even presidents for decades. Ernest Hemingway, President Harry S. Truman 2 and Jimmy Buffett were so inspired by Key West that they made homes here. The southernmost city in the continental United States may be best known for rambunctious Duval Street bars, circus-like Sunset Celebrations at Mallory Square 3 and outrageous street festivals, but it also has historic sites, natural beauty and a subtropical climate, making it a year-round paradise. The city’s “anything goes” attitude combined with its accepting nature makes for a festive environment day and night. Whether you’re looking for a lively nightlife scene, museums and culture or a day in the sun, Key West offers something for everyone. by Holly Hoffman

IT’S HARD. WE GET IT.

I took it for granted, when my husband and I moved here 35 years ago, that people in this town were overdressed. (Way too much jewelry all the time.) But now I see quite the opposite. Maybe it’s just the music industry, but I see people on the streets and in restaurants who look like they have no right to be there. T-shirts and barely covered bottoms and ripped-up jeans everywhere. My grandchildren want to dress like that. I’ve told them I won’t allow it in my house, and I mean to stick by my guns. This is my statement. People say I’m wasting my breath, but I’m not wrong having standards, am I? —Jeanne, Nashville Your grandkids enjoy playing in the yard, and staying out there, don’t they? Like you, I don’t understand the holes in the jeans, especially on dressy occasions. But we’re stuck with barely covered bottoms, at least for the time being. Thirty-five years ago, your double-knit wraparound dresses could only handle so much jewelry. Styles do change, but who knows in what direction? Your vigilant grouchiness is adorable, but watching too closely and holding one’s breath is risky business. Blue’s not your best color. You can set rules for your own house and live by them, just waiting for change to happen. Your own kids must have been well-behaved — or very patient. But have the grandkids shown you their tattoos? I fear they’re here to stay. Start rewriting the will.

Split OpiniOn A few weeks back, my husband and I went over to welcome our new neighbors. I brought along a bottle of Champagne with a bow around the neck. The wife simply wouldn’t accept it. She said, “We don’t drink.” Just like that! I was taken aback; I didn’t know what to say, so I said, “We’re sorry.” I put the bottle down in the living room. Then we took a quick tour of the house. She handed it back to us when we left. How could we have known? —Anonymous, Nashville If only you’d been baking bread that day. Just imagine the sweet smell of the loaves; who doesn’t love it, provided they don’t have a gluten problem ... She might have accepted the bottle with no explanation, but what was she to do with the bubbly, toss it in recycling? She might have said, “Thank you, that’s very kind of you, but we don’t drink.” No reason to explain why, but “thank you” would never have been out of line, and you certainly didn’t owe her an apology. (No reason to be sorry that they don’t drink.) In saying goodbye, I trust you added, “It’s lovely to have you in the neighborhood.” You didn’t think twice before you tied the bow. It seemed logical, something a bit festive. But they’re the new folks on the block; she wanted to get things straight. Or maybe you just caught her on a bad day. When you barge back in, maybe she’ll be in a better mood. But they still won’t be drinkers. Be glad she gave the bottle back.

Good women are all well and good in real life. I, myself, aspire to be a good woman in real life. But good women are boring as hell in fiction; bad women are fascinating. Case in point: the heroines of two new novels out this September — Caroline: Little House, Revisited by Sarah Miller and The Misfortune of Marion Palm by Emily Culliton. I admire Sarah for daring to imagine the interior life of hardworking, goodhearted Caroline Wilder, pioneer mother and wife. Miller’s Caroline remains resourceful and maternal, beautiful and feminine. And her relationship with Pa? Perhaps difficult at moments but generally just about perfect. “With Charles she could ... settle fully into herself — and into him. To lie fitted side by side, bolstering one another without a word ... Even after ten years of wedlock, Charles treated her touch, her very presence, as something he must earn.” Lovely! But this doesn’t make me believe in Caroline — or Charles — as anything other than deeply fictional creations. What Sarah Miller does brilliantly? Transport you into the physical world of the novel. It is February of 1870 when the Ingalls family loads up their covered wagon, leaving the Big Woods of Wisconsin for Indian Territory in Kansas. I felt the bitter cold of the journey, suffered the frustration of roadside meal preparation and jostled among their belongings in the wagon. I have never felt so grateful for my kitchen and running water, not to mention my car. I felt

a great deal of affection and admiration for Caroline and appreciated the time in her company, but I can’t say that anything in her character aroused my curiosity. Marion Palm on the other hand? From the opening moments of Emily’s novel, set in modern-day Brooklyn, Marion both intrigued and chilled me. You learn, on the first page, that Marion has embezzled from her children’s school and — in danger of being found out — has disappeared with the cash, abandoning her husband and two daughters. “Marion Palm is on the lam,” the novel begins, and it proceeds in a similar manner — clipped, short, efficient. Most chapters are no longer than three pages. Will Marion return to her children and husband? Will a hired gun find her? What will happen to her once she begins the next round of embezzlement, this time from more dangerous foes? Also: what will become of her ineffectual writer husband, Nathan, and her confused daughters, Ginny (13) and Jane (8)? They cope with her disappearance in predictable and unpredictable ways, leaving you wondering — and fearing — who’ll jump the rails next. I loved this book, every moment of it, and dreaded reading it. Why, Marion, why? Who have you been in the process of becoming your whole life, leading to this strange and terrible flowering? Caroline wouldn’t know what to make of you.

Women Helping Women 1982

For 119 years, the YWCA has been serving women, girls and families throughout the greater Nashville and Middle Tennessee area. In 1978, they set out to help businesswomen by founding Cable, a network of diverse professionals committed to connecting women and opportunity. Within three months, Cable had 225 members representing 40 fields. Originally started by Mary Schaffner with Barbara Richards as the founding president, Cable passed on the torch of leadership each year to a new president. In 1982, Billye Sanders (the organization’s third president) handed over her gavel to Lydia Cox. The organization has had some impressive women at the helm throughout the years, including Janet Jernigan, Brenda Gilmore and Vicki Horne. In 2001, Cable became an independent organization and is now the state’s largest network for professional women.
