The Orlando door wasn’t exactly held open for Nemours when plans materialized in 2005 to construct a children’s hospital in Orange County’s burgeoning Lake Nona Medical City. In fact, lobbied by Central Florida hospitals, community leaders and some economic developers declined to help Nemours move forward to seek regulatory approval to build a freestanding hospital, even though public funds weren’t requested. “And then Bill Brooks, the mayor of Belle Isle, of all places, stepped up to
publicly support our plan, and that led to more local support, and the rest is history,” said Roger Oxendale, MBA, president of Nemours Children’s Hospital at Lake Nona Medical City in Orlando and a senior vice president with Nemours. (Coincidentally, Oxendale and his wife, Diane, chose Belle Isle as their residence when Nemours hired him in April 2010.) In June, Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute (Sanford-Burnham) announced receipt of a $100 million gift from Conrad Prebys, a prominent San Diego developer, philanthropist, and SanfordBurnham honorary trustee. His gift marks the largest donation ever made by Prebys and will be used to further implement the Institute’s 10-year strategic vision to acceler-
