Holiday Bottles DOUG FROST, NIPPING AT YOUR BORDEAUX
hinking of giving wine as a gift? Wine expert Doug Frost recommends first finding out the recipient’s preferences: red or white, light or heavy, sweet or dry. If you can ask without giving away your game, that is. “It’s great if you can find out which wine style tastes good to whomever is going to taste it, but sometimes that’s just not possible,” says Frost, who is one of only three people in the world to hold both master sommelier and master of wine titles. When in doubt, he advises, “It’s easy: sparkling wine, bubbly, and its highest iteration, Champagne.” The writer, lecturer and host of KCPT Channel 19’s Check, Please (see dougfrost.com) calls it “grown-up soda” and adds: “gloop gloop.” Frost says it’s good to develop a relationship with a wine retailer whose opinion you trust. “If you don’t have one of those, that means you’re not shopping at the same store enough and you’re not talking to the store staff enough,” he says. “Ask them questions and tell them what you think when you don’t like it. And when you do, buy some more wine.” Frost says there are plenty of wine shops
in KC that offer good advice. “I have so many friends in the retail and restaurant business that it’s impossible for me to choose favorites,” he says. “But I will argue — and, indeed, I crow about this every chance I get when I’m speaking around the country — we have some incredibly smart, talented, experienced palates in my town. They can kick some serious ass if you will but listen to their advice.” If you’re going to a party this season, you’ll need a host gift. And if you’re giving one, wine is likely to be on your menu. Either way, Frost suggests a simple rule: Just ask people what they want. “It’s not that weird a question,” he explains. “But if you have a lot of people coming over and you’re not sure what they’ll drink, get a bit of everything: soda, water, mild beers, intense beers like Boulevard’s Smokestack series, some Scotch, some vodka and definitely a good tequila. There should certainly be a breadth of wine styles, not just a pile of expensive Napa Cabs. I’d have a few bottles of German Rieslings, a few California Chardonnays, some Argentine Malbec and Rhone wines or Tuscan reds. Mix it up!”
