ohnson Countians who want their elected commissioners to get out of the bowlingalley renovation business almost got their wish this month.

In fact, they did get that wish — for about 10 minutes.

In a remarkable Board of County Commissioners meeting August 8, a majority voted to pull $7 million in funding for improvements to the King Louie building (8788 Metcalf) in Overland Park. It was an unexpected development during an otherwise dry discussion about county finances.

Commissioners in 2011 sealed the deal to buy the dilapidated King Louie building (“Bowling for Dollars,” June 20), the ski-lodgeE MOR style former home of strikes, gutter balls and couples’ ice skating for T A E IN ONL .COM generations of suburban PITCH youngsters. At that time, it paid $1.95 million to buy the structure, and committed another $1.6 million to keeping rain and rodents out.

All but one county commissioner insisted at the time that it was a great buy, even as there were questions about spending the money to pick up a blighted facility when the county was cutting staff and thinking about shuttering libraries. And ever since, the county has been trying to figure out just what to do with the building.

One idea involves moving the Johnson County Museum from its faraway site in north Shawnee. Another would plop an advance-voting center there. Lenexa’s Enterprise Center of Johnson County has also considered a move to King Louie.

At one point, the county entertained the concept of making the space the National Museum of Suburbia, an attraction that would charge visitors admission to view a detailed replication of the environment just outside the building. (That dream fell by the wayside earlier this year.)

New commissioners have been elected since the county bought King Louie, and some of them are unsure why the purchase happened in the first place — perhaps none more than Steve Klika.

Klika was the star of the August 8 show.

He made a motion to yank $7 million from the county’s capital-improvement program earmarked for making interior improvements to King Louie and devote the funds instead to a new Johnson County Courthouse. That $150 million–$200 million project is something that county officials have sought for more than a decade but haven’t been able to figure

“We keep dumping good money after bad into the existing courthouse,” Klika said.

Ed Eilert, board chairman, reiterated his stance that the King Louie acquisition was a good deal for the county.

“I think it would be a mistake, a major mistake, to forgo this property and not proceed with the planned improvements,” Eilert said.

Ed Peterson, a longtime commissioner from Fairway who is usually a voice of reason among his peers, said he wished that there had been a clearer plan for King Louie when the county bought it.

“An opportunity came up at a very attractive price, and the opportunity was there for a limited time,” said Peterson, who supported the King Louie purchase. “In retrospect, it would have been convenient and nice to have been able to formulate a fully developed plan for how we would use the facility. The opportunity didn’t allow us to develop that kind of plan.”

But that opportunity, which arrived in November 2011, had a short fuse. King Louie’s previous owner wanted the sale to close before the end of that year, for tax purposes — which gave the county less than two months to study, consider and vote on the deal.

In other words, the county’s planning was limited because the commissioners wanted to help a private citizen with his taxes.

Despite Eilert’s and Peterson’s protestations of Klika’s plan to move $7 million away from King Louie, a majority of commissioners (Klika, Jason Osterhaus, John Toplikar and Michael Ashcraft) approved Klika’s idea.

That vote annoyed Eilert and his colleague Jim Allen.

Allen, a former Shawnee mayor, reminded the commission that Johnson County has a history “of doing things right,” before point-

Then he took a swipe at the four commissioners who had just approved the defunding of King Louie.

“The thing that’s kind of ironic is, there’s three of us up here that are former mayors of this county, and us three have a lot of experience as elected officials. And for whatever reason, the three people who come from city government and have been chief elected officials of a city — maybe there’s a different perspective or whatever, but I think it’s unique the three people who supported this are three former mayors in this county and have a long history of serving the public,” Allen said.

His political experience questioned, Klika seemed to lose some of his resolve. He stammered a bit and fidgeted with his fingers, particularly once he learned that most of the $7 million planned for King Louie would have come from the county issuing debt. Meaning: Most of that $7 million wasn’t going to be cash that it could pull from one place to another.

After some discussion — and some prodding by Eilert — Klika asked the commissioners to vote again on the idea that he had brought up. He added that his decision to reconsider his vote was with the understanding that future courthouse funding would “continue to be at the table.” Whatever that means.

In the end, the commission voted to nix the vote taken 10 minutes prior. Klika this time voted with Eilert, Peterson and Allen.

Toplikar, Osterhaus and Ashcraft voted against it. Again. And they must have wondered what they’d just seen.

ne position will rule the first round of your draft: running back. Workhorse backs are a premium commodity, starting with consensus No. 1 pick Adrian Peterson.

The exception: the league’s best wide receiver, Calvin Johnson. But the experts agree: Take a running back first or you’ll regret it.

The Chiefs have one of the best in Jamaal Charles. He would be a locked-in top-five pick had he not suffered a right-foot strain during practice. Don’t feel skittish. Charles returned to practice last week. There is speculation that his carries may drop in Andy Reid’s pass-happy offense, but he’s expected to see double the receptions, making him golden in points-per-reception leagues. Need more convincing? Last season, Charles broke Jim Brown’s yards-per-carry record of 5.22.

His average? A ridiculous 5.82 yards.

Can Dwayne Bowe live up to his own hype? The newly minted $56 million receiver has predicted that he’ll lead the league in receptions and receiving touchdowns.

That’s a bold prognostication from someone whose fantasy relevance has steadily declined since 2010. But Bowe now plays for Reid, who likes his offenses to sling the ball around. And he finally has a competent quarterback in Alex Smith. Still, Bowe is getting snatched up in the 30s (fourth round) in a wide-receiver heavy pool. Let him be someone else’s problem.

The rest: The 49ers didn’t want Smith as their No. 1 quarterback, and neither do you.

As a backup? Maybe. He’ll be available at the end of your draft (unless you’re in a twoquarterback league). Worried about Charles’ foot? Handcuff Knile Davis to him. Newly acquired receiver A.J. Jenkins was barely clinging to a roster spot with San Francisco.

He shouldn’t be on your roster, either. Say no to the Chiefs’ defense. —JUSTIN KENDALL

As recently as an August 11 Facebook post, a photo showed what looked almost like a blank canvas. An August 21 Facebook update put out an emergency call for a flower painter.

Building a truck, it turns out, is a lot of work. Fashioning a Pakistani-style art truck, much more so.

In this fi nal stretch before Akram’s Pakistani Cargo Truck Initiative is due to appear as a complement to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art’s Echoes: Islamic Art & Contemporary Artists exhibition (which opens Saturday), he and his fellow builders are understandably fried. The number of artists and supporters involved is almost as difficult to count as the hours that have gone into the project, or the specific and highly detailed components of the work itself.

His truck isn’t just an art object, though.

It’s also a mobile studio, a base for a workshop to raise cultural awareness. “That’s the point,” he says. “If their curiosity takes them to look into it [Pakistani culture] further, we can get people involved through hands-on activities.”

The front grille is an elaborately cut sculpture in itself, an example of something that can be fabricated using a teachable skill. From kindergartners to college kids, the truck visitors Akram pictures will see how things get made. The workshop includes, for instance, a custom-built print hub, made by the Print Factory (headed by Jesse McAfee and Will Burnip, who also is making four, hand-carved cedar panels for the truck), and a CNC plasma cutter — itself highly decorated by Maya Densman, Akram’s sister, an artist who lives in Texas.

Akram didn’t know much about the trucks until not so long ago. Even for him, bright, happy-looking transports didn’t necessarily come to mind first when he pictured Pakistan.

Conf lict and devastation, Osama bin Laden’s raided compound, the aftermath of earthquakes and floods — these dominate the West’s ideas about this culturally and historically rich nation, the world’s sixth most populous. But push past the CNN basics, and there are those trucks, which appear to be the result of some carnival-mad dream: colorful, over-the-top conglomerations of patterned materials, spinners, carvings and countless add-ons.

Akram’s father was born in Pakistan, and when he died a few years ago, Akram and his brother (propelled by a Lighton International Artists Exchange Program) went

there to connect with relatives and to study at the country’s National College of Arts, in Lahore. In a place where Americans are regarded with suspicion, and the electricity shuts down on average five times a day, Akram says he was struck by the hospitality he experienced in small villages. Strangers fed them in their homes.

And he also got a close-up look at the ubiquitous, decorated cargo trucks and buses that are uniquely Pakistani.

The tradition, he says, started with carts and moved to rickshaws, always with a simple premise: The better-looking the vehicle, the more likely someone is to hop aboard and pay for a ride.

Over there, truck owners invest thousands of dollars and employ workshops full of artisans to trick out trucks and buses. Akram has invested similarly in his endeavor, with $36,000 from 201 Kickstarter backers. There has been assistance from the Richard J. Stern Foundation for the Arts, the Westhead Family Foundation and others, adding up to about half of the truck’s ultimate $150,000 price tag.

The money has gone toward hired labor, artists’ materials, and things such as custommade chrome wheels from Duallysportz in Los Angeles. After all, there’s no off-the-rack choice for a ’92 GMC TopKick 24-foot box truck out there.

“It’s amazing the amount of support we’ve received with just an idea,” he says.

“Even from the initial get-go … people stood behind it. It’s a lot of faith.”

The idea began to take shape in February

2012, when Akram — who runs a metal-fabrication shop that produces custom work for people who want high-end fences, tables and railings — picked out a 1952 Chevrolet grain truck. All that’s left of the original frame now is the cab, and even that has been heavily modified.

“We ripped everything off the frame, put in new brakes, a new motor, new wheels,” Akram says. “We cut about 7 feet off the back of the box, ripped the box off, took the cab off, took the motor out, took this cab that we got off the other truck. We cut it in half, widened the whole thing by 2 feet, put it back together.

“Everybody that has been involved with it is doing a really good job,” he adds. “It took a long time. Kevin Fain, my employee, has been essential in doing all the mechanical stuff.”

Beyond that retooling, there’s also dizzying color now: reds and blues and metallic gold dancing in a controlled set of patterns.

There are stars and stripes and arabesques.

The drive shaft is painted bright-red, and the red on the sides of the truck is made of attention-getting ambulance-grade reflective vinyl. Hundreds of hand-painted links of decorative chain dangle in golden loops from sparkly, powdercoated, cut-steel “aprons” all around the vehicle’s cargo box. The cab is still naked inside. As I talk with Akram, Jim Santilli of KC Upholstery is due to install seats, and Fain is still making adjustments to the electrical system, which has to support air conditioning, lighting, a sound system, and anything a truck normally needs to start and run.

Akram’s mother, Nancy Bounds, has come to deliver some random but essential mechanical parts. She sells real estate and teaches yoga, but she tells me that, for the past six weeks, she has been at the garage every day. “One night at midnight,” she says, “we were crawling around on the top of the truck, painting the top of the truck. All these guys are just — we’re all working like crazy.

You have a deadline and you meet it.”

And now it’s here. Originally planned as a private preview, “Help Welcome the Pakistani Cargo Truck” is open to all at 7 p.m. August 29, at 45th Street and Oak (at the north side of the museum, between the Bloch and main buildings). When Echoes opens, the truck will mostly stay parked in the roundabout for at least three months.

I ask Akram which challenge has been this project’s greatest. “Everything,” he says.

“The only easy stuff is the stuff that’s done,” he says. Come Thursday, it’ll all be done. And even then, he may not say that any of it was easy.

W

hat do a former porn shop, a brick warehouse and a tiny residential basement have in common? At each site, body-product lovers are handcrafting natural ingredients into the stuff that makes skin happy. Here’s a look at what’s new with three local places that do soap right.

Cathryn Simmons and Lori Buntin have built their sprawling paradise at 33rd Street and Troost. There, you fi nd Simmons’ jewelrymaking space and framing studio; Buntin’s painting studio; their Hoop Dog Studio (an Urban Grown Farms & Gardens Tour site featuring a drip-irrigation vegetable garden, water gardens, a berry room and chickens); the former video porn shop where they live; and, as of two and a half years ago, a soapmaking station.

Simmons bought Soapologies in early 2011 from a woman in Holton, Kansas. She had long been a fan of the soap — sold at Stuff in Brookside — and spent the first 18 months of the venture learning the trade. Over the past year, she has broadened the line with the addition of lotion, shea-butter creams, scrubs, and multiple soap sizes and scents.

She was initially attracted to the glycerin soap for its moisture retention, and she has found that the humectant quality keeps customers coming back for more. People with skin

sensitivities swear by the top seller: soap with oatmeal, milk and honey. The eucalyptusmint bar, with what Simmons describes as “that fresh scent that everyone loves,” claims the No. 2 spot.

Leslie McGuire describes Indigo Wild’s honey-lavender Zum bar in a way that makes you want to devour it.

“It’s this brown bar that’s really warm and yummy in the shower and leaves your skin feeling so good,” says McGuire, who manages marketing for Kansas City’s best-known soap house. “It is like heaven.”

The bar makes its Indigo Wild catalog debut this week. The Zum bar is the nationally known company’s signature product, but at least two years have passed since a new scent joined the family of goat’s milk soaps.

Beyond the bar, Indigo Wild products rolling out now include a sea buckthorn facial serum; the Zum Ball Haul — Zum soap in a three-ballsper-package form; and a tea-tree spray cleaner for yoga mats. As McGuire says, “Yoga mats can get funky after a while, so this gets out that funk, yet isn’t overpowering to where it disturbs the person next to you in class.”

Gabby Mendez and her boyfriend, Chad Kepler, responded to a need last fall.

You don’t have to go out to find your new favorite local bar.

“We couldn’t fi nd soap without a lot of crap in it that wasn’t terribly expensive,” she says of the idea behind the couple’s Basement Soap.

They both have a passion for making things, so the challenge seemed doable. She repurposes clothing and jewelry and draws.

He’s into food fermentation and perfecting apple cider. (To pay the bills, Mendez works as a massage therapist, and Kepler drives a truck.)

They’ve stuck to just three ingredients — coconut oil, olive oil and essential oils — to make soap in the basement of their Kansas City, Kansas, rental. Their line so far has included a lemon, orange and grapefruit citrus blend; a lavender scent; and an orange patchouli. They’ve sold their soaps temporarily in salons and a coffee shop. Mostly, Mendez delivers the product to those who fi nd her through word of mouth.

They’re searching for ways to grow their soap business as well as their other projects. “We’re makers at heart, and every day we’re looking for ways to get a space or buy a house so we can make more stuff,” Mendez says.

rank Sebree plans to open his newest culinary concept, Baked in Kansas City, by Thanksgiving — in time to do some holiday business. The combination bakery and restaurant returns to duty the former Napoleon Bakery building, at 706 Westport Road.

Sebree has hired Michael Smith restaurant veteran Nicolette Foster (see “Foster the Pastry,” June 28, 2012) to oversee the operation’s patisserie-style pastries. Baker Christopher Glenn, who has made bread under his own New Traditionalist label, is also on the payroll. Foster is already making the desserts for Sebree’s Majestic Restaurant, at 931 Broadway, and Glenn has started making bread for that venue as well. Both are working closely with the Majestic’s recently promoted executive chef, Liz Huffman, who will serve in the same capacity at Baked in Kansas City.

Sebree was introduced to Foster by one of his servers, David Hayden, who designed the websites for both the Majestic and Baked.

“When I told David about our plans for the bakery,” Sebree says, “he told me that the best pastry chef in Kansas City was Nikki Foster. And he was right — she makes the best macaroons I have ever tasted in my life.”

Baked in Kansas City will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. Sebree is still toying with the idea of reviving Napoleon Bakery’s tradition of offering lunch specials that include a pastry in the price. “We’re discussing that idea,” he says.

In a departure from the old Napoleon, though, the new restaurant is going to have more than double the space. “We’ve knocked out a wall in the area that used to be used for dishwashing,” Sebree says. He had new flooring installed in the dining area last week.

Sebree says Baked will sell a wide variety of artisan breads made with organic flour.

Napoleon Bakery’s bread ovens came with the building, and they’re staying. “Chris Glenn is very excited about that,” Sebree says. “The ovens are really excellent.”

Expect a full bar and a selection of Kansas City–brewed beer, as well as locally roasted coffee — though Sebree hasn’t yet settled on a company to provide the latter. “The Roasterie does the coffee for the Majestic,” he says, “but we’re looking at other purveyors, too.”

BUN CHECK Formosa Bakery pops up in OP’s Café Vie.

ormosa Bakery has started selling its Taiwanese-style desserts and breads at Café Vie (10330 Metcalf, Overland Park). The casual restaurant, on the back side of the gray strip mall at 103rd Street and Metcalf, is known for its Korean, Vietnamese and Asianinspired food.

Inside Café Vie’s cool, casual space, one walk-up counter offers rice and noodle bowls (including pho), sandwiches, wraps and rolls.

The other counter is for coffee, bubble tea, shaved ice and other desserts, including the additions from Formosa. Individual slices of tiramisu, Black Forest cake and cheesecake sit next to the cutesy-sounding Snow White, Puppy Love and Yellow Volcano.

What makes the desserts particularly Taiwanese? Raymond Kung, the bakery’s sales and marketing guy, says chef and owner Hamlet Chang uses no preservatives and less sugar. (That, plus he trained in Taiwan.)

He describes the texture as “lighter and smoother.” The tiramisu ($3.99), one of the bakery’s best-sellers, consists of two thin cake layers bound together by a thick wedge of creamy mascarpone. The overall effect is airy, and it’s well-complemented by Vietnamese coffee ($3.49; it’s not on the menu, but the café can make it).

The other desserts are also light-tasting.

The Snow White is a puff y white cupcake with a custard filling. The Puppy Love has a silky base that’s similar to panna cotta and contrasts neatly with the bright, almost-tart citrus burst of the passion-fruit topping. The Yellow Volcano turns out to be more delicate than its name suggests: a thin, deep shell filled with smooth egg custard.

For more traditional fare, Formosa also sells an array of savory and sweet buns ($1.50). The most addictive of these is the one that stuffs a soft, eggy bread with a lightly sweetened red-bean paste. It goes well with a sugary, Thai-tea-flavored bubble tea ($4.49).

According to my mom, in Taiwan, the sweet buns are usually eaten for breakfast, paired with soy milk, or for dessert.

Founded in Lawrence earlier this summer, Formosa Bakery is making the KC leap to get in front of the huge crowds frequenting the Asian markets here (including the one next door to Vie). A smaller selection of its desserts is also available at Pine & Bamboo Garden (10915 Shawnee Mission Parkway).

While the desserts are served every day at Café Vie, the breads are available only after 4 p.m. on Fridays.

Chicago reissue label Numero Group revives the Kansas City soul label Forte.

arva Whitney, one of the greatest soul singers to come out of Kansas City, died of complications from pneumonia last December. Whitney was best-known for her association with James Brown — she was a member of his James Brown Revue and later released solo records for Brown’s King Records. Brown, sometimes known as Soul Brother No. 1, used to call Whitney Soul Sister No. 1.

By 1969, Brown and Whitney’s romantic and professional relationship had soured (for those details, see Whitney’s book, God, the Devil and James Brown: Memoirs of a Funky Diva), and Whitney returned to Kansas City.

Back home, she hooked up with a man named Ellis Taylor, who ran the only soul label in town: Forte Records.

Forte Records operated from 1967 until the late ’70s and released soul and funk albums from such groups as the Four Darlings, Everyday People, the Fabulous Rhythm Makers, and the Rayons. Unless you’re a crate-digging DJ, a serious record collector or a local historian, those names likely don’t register. But to the Chicago-based Numero Group — a preeminent reissue label that this week officially releases 28 songs from Forte’s catalog on CD and a double LP — the songs have been worth years of pursuit.

“Forte is one of those labels that’s been kind of known to us for a long time — it’s been floating around,” says Rob Sevier, a Numero Group founder who heads up Eccentric Soul, the funk-soul arm of the label. “Ten years ago, shortly before Ellis Taylor died, he basically dumped all his record stock to a junker — a guy who cleans out houses, basically. So there was this junker selling all these old Forte 45s on eBay, and I bought a bunch and so did a lot of other people. For a moment in time, they were very attainable records.”

This was before Numero Group was even a label; Sevier was collecting purely out of enjoyment. He says he remembers hearing from other collectors that Taylor’s son, Ellis Jr., was considering reissuing Forte’s catalog.

But that never came to pass. “Then about five years ago, we started thinking seriously about Forte,” Sevier says. “By that point, we had gone from being a label that barely existed to one that had done a lot of soul reissues.

So we were in a position to get a Forte release some attention.” (Forte is the second KC-area reissue from the Numero Group; in 2008, it released a four-LP boxed set of Titan Records’ late-’70s and early ’80s power pop.)

The process was slowgoing. Whitney, who married (and later divorced) Ellis Taylor, owned half the rights to the label’s masters; Ellis Jr. had inherited the other half after his 34

father’s death. Having been burned by record labels in the past, Whitney was initially suspicious of Numero Group and would communicate with the label only via surrogates.

One of those surrogates was Dawayne Gilley, a longtime champion and historian of blues and jazz in Kansas City. “Dawayne was integral,” Sevier says. “Marva trusted him.”

Gilley and Whitney became friends in 1998; they met through another Kansas City diva, Myra Taylor. “I never knew Marva as a funk legend,” Gilley says. “I didn’t know that about her backstory for four to five years.

Then one day at Music Exchange, I saw a reissue of a King album by Marva. Over time, I picked up that she was part of James Brown’s show, that she had all these old connections.

One time, she had [Stax Records owner] Al Bell give me a call about something or other — I mean, she was the real deal.”

In the spring of 2012, Whitney approached Gilley about looking into Numero Group and evaluating whether the deal they were offering was a legitimate one. “I knew a little about them [Numero],” Gilley says. “So I started calling people I knew I could trust. And everybody was saying Numero pretty much does what they say they’ll do. Then I had to educate myself on the history of Forte. I talked to [The Fish Fry’s] Chuck Haddix, I had [Cyprus Avenue’s] Bill Shapiro look over contracts.

And Marva had me talk to Ellis Jr. about it.”

Ultimately, Whitney and Ellis Jr. decided to move forward, with Gilley negotiating the deal. “As I told Ellis Jr., at the end of the day they’re reissuing a nice keepsake of your mother and father’s work that wouldn’t otherwise exist, and they’re writing you a check to do it,” Gilley says. “And maybe one of the songs gets used in a TV show or movie and you get some royalty money. Marva held some of the project up with unusual requests, but you can’t really hold that against her — when you’ve had a lifetime of getting screwed over by record labels, it’s hard to trust people.”

Whitney was the star of the label in its later years, but in a lot of ways, the story of Forte is Taylor’s. Before founding Forte, Taylor worked in a TV repair shop on Walrond Avenue, and then as an engineer at radio station KPRS (then AM, now Hot 103 Jamz).

“Ellis Taylor was a bit of a hustler, and — this is something I’ve found a lot with old label guys from his era — his inroad to the music business was his knowledge of electrical engineering,” Sevier says. “He didn’t have a ton of musical talent, but he had the know-how for the equipment. So he hooks up with a DJ named Rick Darnell, who turns out to be kind of a classic music-industry crook who stands between the money and the artists. Darnell recruits Taylor because he needs somebody to generate masters for his artists.

They work together on a release, and it flops,

Marva and other marvels are back. and Darnell disappears, but Taylor ends up sticking with the business.”

“In 1967 to ’69, there wasn’t anybody else in KC producing soul or funk music for black folks,” Gilley says. “Ellis was a guy who was trying to get talent around here rolling and get artists in front of bigger industry people.

I think he was more inspired by the technical and studio side of the process than being a business owner or bigwig. And I think he saw Forte as more of a demo label — he was able to get Decca interested in [Forte artists] Tony Ashley and the Rayons using demos he cut.

He didn’t hold anybody back, which is what a lot of managers, agents and producers did in those days.”

Gilley also notes that business ethics were crucial to Whitney’s agreeing to the deal with Numero. “They [Numero] had to agree to pay artist royalties to everybody on the compilation — and work to find everybody on the compilation — or else she wouldn’t do the deal,” he says. “She wanted to make sure everybody got paid, even if it meant she got less.”

Forte continued releasing 45s (never an LP) through the late 1970s, when Whitney and Taylor divorced. Taylor reportedly stored his stock sleeveless, in a squalid garage, until just before his death. After some dark years as a lounge and torch singer, continued on page 36

There’s much more to the Forte story, much of which can be found in the extensive liner notes that accompany the Numero Group reissue. (Every major record store in town is stocking the release, and Zebedee’s RPM is having a soul party with live music Saturday, September 7, to celebrate.) Unfortunately, Numero Group was unable to do a proper interview with Whitney before her death, so some mysteries remain.

“She died a few weeks after giving us the go-ahead to come down to Kansas City and interview her,” Sevier says. “We have access to existing interviews with her but none that are Forte-focused.”

“I do wish Marva could have talked to Numero for the album notes,” Gilley says.

“Because even though she could be difficult, she was, at her core, a people person. She has to be about the most down-to-earth superstar diva that ever lived. She grew up in Armourdale, then moved to the northeast part of KCK. And then she’s on the road with James Brown and on the cover of Jet magazine. She was the biggest thing going for a while there, but she stayed humble. And in some ways, I think she could have been a bigger star if she’d stuck with James Brown or made some different decisions. But at least now, with this release, folks in KC and beyond will hear the funk and soul pleasures of her music.”

Brass soaring over a complex rhythm line or coating a sinuous, full-bodied sax. Intricate solos flying through unconventional time. It’s unusual to find original jazz compositions as compelling and entertaining as those Ryan Heinlein has written for the Project H. It’s also unusual to find a trombone in a small jazz ensemble in KC these days. But Heinlein’s trombone, Clint Ashlock’s trumpet and Brett Jackson’s tenor sax mesh and merge and support one another, consistently delivering the right combination and the ideal voice. Andrew Ouellette’s keyboards weave through the compositions, with Dominque Sanders’ bass and Matt Leifer’s driving drums. The group brings its special jazz sound to the Kill Devil Club in the Power & Light District Saturday night.

Inside jokes are as much a part of the Steely Dan legacy as impeccable production values and jazz fusion, and the group’s core — Donald Fagen and Walter Becker — has accordingly titled the current U.S. tour “Mood Swings: 8 Days to Pancake Day.” But judging by recent set lists, this Midland show shouldn’t be too terribly different from the one at Starlight that Steely Dan played on its 2011 “Shuffle Diplomacy” tour: lots of the big hits (“Peg,” “Josie,” “Reelin’ in the Years”), plus a handful of deeper cuts to appease nerdling fans like myself.

Chief Keef

Interscope signed Chief Keef to a big contract last year, when he was just 17 years old. His official debut recently arrived — it’s called Finally Rich; pity that Keef had to wait so long for his millions — and it’s a hard-ass dispatch from the increasingly scary streets of Keef’s hometown of Chicago. At a time when hip-hop stars are absorbing other genres (R&B, EDM, indie rock) and dialing back the misogyny and violence, Keef counts as something of a holdout. His raps — cold

and detached, and full of gunshots, ambulance sirens, “bitches,” drugs and money — reflect the worldview of a young man without much in the way of role models. Perhaps Gucci Mane, who recently signed Keef to his Brick Squad label, will be a positive influence in this young man’s life. But probably not.

Reach, Heartfelt Anarchy, Stik Figa, the Abnorm

The Riot Room’s patio stage at The Pitch Music Showcase in early August was a nice crash course in local hip-hop talent, and this bill (which includes two overlaps in Reach and Stik Figa) is just about as solid. If Chief Keef’s gangsta style isn’t your flavor of rap, the more thoughtful and playful, conscious hip-hop that these acts are laying down might be more your speed.

That mélange could easily come across as scattershot and uneven over the course of an album (or a song), but the Love Language is making it all cohere pretty expertly.
