urograph is J. Ashley Miller, Shawn E. Hansen and Mark L. Southerland - three creative musicians from the Kansas City area. “What makes this trio unusual” Southerland says, “is that all the members are conceptual artists playing improvisational music. We put a lot of forethought into being in the moment.”

The group is not genre-driven but often lands on the experimental fringe of trance music. “We’re re-examining the criteria of sound as music.” Hansen says. “Perhaps not for all ears all the time, but right now I want to call these things music: melodies as background noise, textures with no rhythm, a beat that is implied but never adhered to, loud silences, a single note as a complex gesture.” The group officially came into being just a few months ago Aurograph presented at “By Product” by Sean Starowitz but already has recorded with the likes of Arrington De Dionyso and Helen Gillet. Most recently, the three played at Walnut Place Laundromat with Tatasuya Nakatani as part of a Rocket Grant project. “When you’re playing creative improvisational music, context is everything,” Southerland says. “You must curate yourself into compelling and unusual situations.” Aurograph’s latest situation is designing the runway music for the West 18th Street Fashion Show. “We’ve taken an additive approach, a new cell or idea for each designer, all over a growing heartbeat bass drum” Southerland says. “Refining and codifying our ideas to fit each collection has been a great constraint. We’ve been trying out these ideas by rehearsing and recording, then listening and refining.” With the help of the West 18th Fashion Show, Aurograph will release a limited-run, lathe-cut recording of selected runway compositions. The recording will be on yellow, laser-cut acrylic, inside a beautiful Hammerpress package. The release is slotted for June 20 at Grünauer.

Peregrine Honig Creative Director Day job : artist and Co-owner, birdies “Kansas City is full of amazing teams of people. Getting to collaborate with my favorite teams has made the process of producing the West 18th Street Fashion Show more curatorial and interesting to navigate. I always love working with Hammerpress, and I’m delighted to work with asheer akram on another public project.”

Danielle Meister Sponsorship Producer Day job : Co-owner and buyer, birdies “I engage with so many pillars of the community in their stores, restaurants and boutiques in pursuit of sponsorship. It is my pleasure to finally reach the date of the event, and see them arrive soigné on 18th Street to enjoy the show. our fabulous city supports us not only financially but also with their attendance and enthusiasm, and we can’t thank them enough!”

Molly BingaMan Coordinating Producer Day job : Personal Stylist, Ladybird Styling “I’m thrilled with our theme this year. Gilded gold is so intriguing conceptually, as it’s meant to display opulence and weight, and yet by nature it is delicate, fragile and easily flaked away. I can’t wait to see how our designers interpret this in their work. This show, and all that’s involved with putting it together, is a reminder of how vibrant the creative community of Kansas City is!”
