eing the best isn’t enough for Ronda Rousey.

Since joining the UFC, the 28-year-old has dominated mixed martial arts, arm-barring her way to the Bantamweight Championship while ascending to an athletic elite. Watch her at work and you feel like she’d be tops at whatever sport she chose — including that other blood sport: branding.

Over the past two months, she has appeared in a worldwide blockbuster movie (Furious 7), stared out from the cover of Sports Illustrated, and released her first memoir. My Fight/Your Fight, which hit store shelves everywhere (except Wal-Mart) May 12, brings her to Unity Temple on the Plaza Thursday, May 28, for a Rainy Day Books reading and signing.

This year’s surge in recognition and demand would make a less-driven person sweat. But Rousey thrives on it.

“The pressure is really a necessary part of me getting pleasure out of anything,” she tells The Pitch. “If I was just stapling papers all day, there’s no pressure in that, but I would also get no pleasure out of it. I think overcoming high-pressure situations is what gives me more pleasure than anything.”

And there are plenty of high-pressure moments in My Fight, which chronicles what now seems like a fateful journey to an MMA career — even if Rousey didn’t always see it that way.

“If you didn’t know how it was going to end, it wouldn’t seem so fateful,” she says.

“It would seem like I was making it up as I was going along because that’s how it felt to me when I was in it. I didn’t figure out that I wanted to do MMA for a long time.

“That was one of the lessons of the book, you know,” Rousey adds. “Through all of the worst things in my life, the best things happened as a result. By the end of it, I’ve really, truly come to believe that everything happens for a reason.”

As Rousey does round after round of interviews for her book, she keeps hearing the same question: When will you fight Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino?

“I don’t know why everyone is pushing the responsibility of making that fight onto me,” Rousey says. “She’s the one to redeem herself.”

Rousey has repeatedly said she will meet Justino, who fights at 145 pounds, when she cuts her weight to 135 pounds and passes a drug test. (Justino failed one in 2012 and served a one-year suspension. ) In a My Fight chapter titled “Trust in Knowledge, Not in Strength,” Rousey calls out Justino without naming her. In that chapter, she calls doping in MMA “almost

negligent homicide.” She tells The Pitch that the chapter is meant to “address her and every other cheater out there.”

“Everybody else fights at 135,” Rousey says. “I don’t see why I should make exceptions for a cheater. She can make weight, pumped full of steroids at 145. There’s no reason that she can’t get off of them and move down.

“She’s the one that needs me,” Rousey continues. “I definitely don’t need her. I have plenty of other options out there besides her, and all that she has is me. If it never happens, that sucks. I hope that it does. I have this vision that when I beat her, it’ll be the final fight of my career, and it will

Rousey doesn’t hold back. be this great beautiful thing people might have wanted to see with Mayweather and Pacquiao and thought that they were missing. I feel like that need is out there for a grand-finale happy ending, but if she doesn’t step up and she keeps running away from the drug testing and everything else … there’s nothing I could do about that.”

Rousey doesn’t lack options or opponents, though, especially when factoring in pro wrestling. In March, she stole the show at WWE’s WrestleMania, making a cameo with her Furious 7 co-star the Rock to confront bad-guy authority figures Triple H and his

wife, Stephanie McMahon. Of course, the war of words turned physical when Rousey, a lifelong wrestling fan, slammed Triple H and made McMahon yelp. UFC president Dana White has said Rousey won’t be going back to WWE, but Rousey says she’ll find her way back to the square circle.

“I don’t know what I want to do,” Rousey says when asked if she’d like to do a match.

“I’m playing it by ear. Right now, all of the foreseeable future is planned out, and it’s starting to look like I’m going to be filming at the beginning of next year during the next WrestleMania. And to be honest, everyone keeps asking what I want to do and if I want to do it, but if you’re a real wrestling fan, you wouldn’t want to know. You’d want to be surprised anyway.”

How did Rousey’s WrestleMania moment come together? She thanks her agent — and the Rock.

“We sort of formed a team and approached WWE with it,” Rousey says.

“They seemed to like it, and we creatively threw ideas back and forth. Everything was changing and evolving to the last second, and when we were out there, there were a couple of things that we were making up as we were going along. Letting things happen organically and kind of going with the flow with it all has really served me well in every facet of my life.

“Everything that we improvised went way better than what was planned,” she adds. “It was an amazing experience to see the process from the inside.”

Including throwing around Triple H. “That was fun,” she says. “That wasn’t even a throw that I was planning to do. That was one of the things that didn’t go according to plan, and I made up a new throw on the spot, and it looked really cool.”

And there will be more opportunities outside the Octagon. Look for Rousey in the upcoming Entourage movie, and next year in Peter Berg’s action-thriller Mile 22. How will she balance her film and fight careers?

“I don’t know,” she admits. “There are very few examples to follow. It was very cool to have Rock on our team because he is the most similar model out there. It’s different, but there’s a lot that I can learn and steal from.”

Which one “got it” is, like the recipe for the house-made root beer, a proprietary secret.

It’s not a secret — more of a mystery, really — whether Harold’s Drive-In, just west of the Paseo (1337 Admiral Boulevard), ever had carhops. Nancy Smith, who bought the now 57-year-old venue in 1998 from original owner Harold McBain, doesn’t think so.

“Until the late 1970s, the building had an open window facing the street,” she says.

“People drove into the parking lot, came up to the counter, ordered, paid and left.”

Smith runs the breakfast-and-lunch spot with her two sisters, Mary and Caramae, and there’s only a worn wooden bench in front of the counter. If you dine at Harold’s, you really do eat it and beat it.

That’s also the case at another legendary urban drive-in, the 53-year-old Humdinger (2504 East Ninth Street), which encourages its patrons to pay for their food (in cash, please; there’s an ATM near the entrance) and take it someplace else. The Humdinger, which serves breakfast and lunch, offers a relatively extensive menu: cheeseburgers, tacos, barbecue sandwiches, fried shrimp, pork tenderloin.

That kind of variety used to be the order of the day at drive-ins, which were made obsolete by franchises such as McDonald’s and Sonic.

Another thing that hasn’t kept up with the times: brain sandwiches.

Specifically, the fried-pork-brain sandwiches that shared the menu with the usual loose-meat burgers, chili dogs and shakes at the family-run Clem’s (10802 East 23rd Street, Independence, Missouri). Naturally, I’ve tried the thing. It had a tempura-like exterior, and the interior was fluffy and soft and sort of earthy-tasting. But there’s no more brain now

wish someone — one of these up-andcoming, hip young chefs — would reinvent the drive-in concept for the 21st century,” says Colby Garrelts, the James Beard Awardwinning chef who co-owns Bluestem and Rye with his wife, pastry chef Megan Garrelts. He recalls meals at one of the local A&W drive-ins during his childhood. “We also had a local chain called Smaks,” he says.

“I loved that, too."

Local Pig honcho Alex Pope shows no signs of altering his restaurant’s metal trays to latch onto car windows, and Novel’s Ryan Brazeal seems unlikely to put his servers in roller skates. But I know what Garrelts means.

I miss drive-in eating, too.

But whenever my nostalgia grows acute, I get in the car, imagine that I’m driving a Pontiac GTO with an 8-track player in the dash, and cruise to one of the metro’s few remaining relics of the drive-in era. Obviously, I do this most often in the summer.

The oldest such restaurant still operating in the area is Homer’s Drive Inn, in Leavenworth (1320 South Fourth Street). It opened in 1931 as a rustic shack selling Prohibitionfriendly root beer before expanding to include sandwiches. As the business took off, owner Homer McKelvey employed only male carhops (they wore ties to give the joint some class). It moved to the current venue in 1938.

Homer’s is still a drive-in but only in the loosest sense of the word. Most of the customers eat inside, mowing down breakfast, lunch or dinner in red leatherette booths. But if you want to time-travel a little, just call ahead (use a land line if you really wanna be old-school), place an order, drive to the front of the whitewashed building and honk. A server will come running out with your order.

Two years after Homer’s opened, Kansas City’s iconic Winstead’s (101 Emanuel Cleaver II Boulevard) started serving steakburgers and milkshakes on the Country Club Plaza. For a time, it fought a tough battle against a more popular rival drive-in, Sidney’s, a few blocks away. But Winstead’s had the last laugh, outlasting Sidney’s by nearly four decades.

The Winstead’s-versus-Sidney’s days were the pinnacle of KC’s drive-in era. The 1960 city directory lists no fewer than 65 drive-in restaurants. Nine of those listings belonged to various locations of Mugs Up Root Beer Drive In. There’s only one Mugs Up left, in Independence, Missouri (700 East 23rd Street). The bright-orange-and-white structure dates to 1957 and still employs carhops. For decades, the sign in front of the building boasted that it was “Bill and Ann’s” Mugs Up, but those names have been removed. “There was a divorce,” whispered one of the carhops, snap-

The change, which happened a few years ago, brought that popular drive-in at 3828 Chouteau Trafficway to the former Clem’s space. Nowadays, the menu is composed of burgers, wings, burritos and tenderloins, along with a very tasty and generous mostaccioli dinner with meatballs, a cheese ravioli for less than six bucks, and chicken-parmesan sandwiches.

“When we first opened,” said a young woman working the counter when I stopped by, “we got a few people still asking for brain sandwiches. But no one ever does anymore.”

An eclectic menu is also featured at Teresa’s Drive-In (6450 Truman Road), which serves a hell of a double cheeseburger, hot dogs, chili dogs, Italian steak sandwiches and pork tenderloins. There also are fried-shrimp baskets, tacos, chicken tenders and grilled cheese sandwiches. The 47-year-old drive-in finally installed a drive-thru window a few years ago, accommodating the kind of latter-day patrons who balk at leaving their cars to order a meal.

(There remains a tiny, spotlessly clean dining room for those who opt to stretch their legs.)

Teresa’s is still family-owned, and there’s a palpable camaraderie here, with good-natured bantering audible from the open, shiny kitchen.

“Most customers prefer to come in to order,” one of the employees tells me. “They want to find out what’s going on in the neighborhood.”

And that, of course, is the biggest difference between yesterday’s drive-ins and the drive-thrus we’ve become so accustomed to: actually talking to the person who’s making your lunch.

Locally, the United States Bartender’s Guild organizes the events. This year, nearly 60 participating bars and restaurants have signed on. To make a bigger charitable impact, the USBG has elected to focus donations on one charity: Newhouse, one of Kansas City’s oldest domesticviolence shelters.

he story of 3000 Troost is a tale of money, music and mayonnaise.

The shelves of the low-slung brick building, which hasn’t been a supermarket since Gerald Ford was in the White House, are now filled with locally made chipotle-flavored mayonnaise, garlic sauce, salad dressings, barbecue sauces, and bottled chili.

Flavor Trade, a commercial kitchen, foodmanufacturing plant and retail shop, has hints of that bygone era with two worn checkout counters that date back to the 1950s. The cash registers are gone, but you can charge your groceries using Square.

It’s still not really a supermarket, but if Shannon Kimball has his way, Flavor Trade will again make 30th and Troost a serious shopping destination.

Kimball, who formerly owned a construction company that did high-end bathroom remodels, turned his attention to food manufacturing as an offshoot of his passion for barbecue competitions. His barbecue team, FireBug, now competes in only two regional competitions a year, but Kimball began making his own line of rubs, marinades and barbecue sauces. That led him to form Flavor Trade, which packages and markets products created by other local-food innovators, including such “incubator clients” as Tim and Laura Tuohy’s Kansas City Canning Co.

“It went from being my hobby to my business,” Kimball says.

Kimball opened Flavor Trade’s retail business May 1. Store hours are 9 a.m.–5 p.m.

Monday–Friday and 9 a.m.–2 p.m. Saturday.

This summer, he plans to host a farmers market in the store’s parking lot. The back of the building is being used by several local entrepreneurs to create products, including exSporting KC player Steven Spangler’s Simple Science Juices.

The only thing that Kimball likes better than giving customers a tour of the deceptively large facility is sharing the property’s history.

“In the 1920s,” Kimball says, “this was the Horner Institute, the forerunner of the Conservatory of Music.”

Yes and no. The pre-World War II structure, which most recently was a Wonder Bread Thrift Store, never offered music classes within its 6,000-square-foot shell. It was built in 1940 as a Safeway supermarket.

In 1920, students at the Horner Institute of Fine Arts did take lessons inside the gothic George F. Winter mansion, a magnificent three-story stone hulk with turrets and balconies that stood on this location till 1938.

Not long after Charles Horner’s music school merged with the conservatory, it moved to Armour Boulevard, and the Winter home —

Add some heat at Flavor Trade. like most of the mansions on Troost — came tumbling down.

The supermarket later became a uniform company and then a store selling day-old bread and pastries. Since Kimball bought the building a few years ago, pastries — fresh pastries this time — have returned to the venue.

Carla Schreiber began selling her fresh cheesecakes at Flavor Trade earlier this month.

Kimball says this stretch of Troost, once dominated by a commercial-bakery building across the street, is “a neighborhood in transition.” Much of the property to the north of Flavor Trade is owned by the Nazarene Publishing House. A slow renaissance of new retail development has begun to the south, which once boasted dozens of mom-and-pop stores.

During the early 20th century, Troost had a busy streetcar line that brought customers from different parts of the city to the many movie theaters, cafeterias and shops that lined the thoroughfare. Kimball would like to see that kind of energy return to the neighborhood.

“I think you’re going to start seeing some of the positive energy come back,” he says.

Arc Flash stays grounded despite stalker cyborgs.

n a drizzly weekday, I meet the members of Arc Flash on the rooftop of a parking garage in downtown Lawrence.

“We were kinda feeling the whole Deep Throat thing, ya know?” one of their e-mails had explained.

The three members of this Lawrence garage-rock trio are strikingly dressed for this meeting. Drummer Mark Osman wears a paint-stained overall snowsuit and no shirt, and a fleece ski mask covers most of his head and face. Lead singer and guitarist James Thomblison is in an aquamarine-colored turtleneck knit dress with lightning bolts detailed at the shoulders. And bassist Lewis Guillen cultivates an early Bob Dylan look with dark pants and a jacket. Though the day is gray and misty, all three wear sunglasses, and they don’t remove them for the duration of our time together.

Arc Flash’s weirdness can be intimidating.

In live performances, the band has a jarring energy. The tension in their music gives the band a disconcerting, antagonistic stance. Onstage, they kill their instruments, and offstage, they give a maniacal vibe.

Three minutes into our interview, just as Thomblison finishes detailing the band’s origin story — Arc Flash started as a duo in November 2013, with Osman joining and making it a trio in late 2014 — an electric-guitar riff drowns out our conversation. The riff grows louder with each passing moment. At first, it sounds like a distant soundcheck. Then it becomes clear that someone with a guitar is ascending the parking-garage stairs.

“What the fuck?” Guillen mutters. He leans over the railing, peering down a shadowy stairwell.

A tall figure, wearing a gas mask with a mobile amp strapped to his back, appears at the top of the garage like a haunting, hulking monster of the apocalypse. He marches across the parking lot, the guitar riff playing on a loop.

“Fuckin’ A,” Osman exclaims. The figure stops in the center of the parking lot and pulls out a neon-green Nerf crossbow.

“This happens from time to time,” Thomblison says.

“Is this an auxiliary member of your band?” I ask.

“No,” Thomblison responds. “He’s a transdimensional cyborg. Sometimes he just appears out of nowhere and attacks.”

I nod and take this as my cue to find cover. I dive behind a white sedan and furiously scribble notes about the scene unfolding before me.

“Most bizarre interview ever,” “hell demon + Nerf balls,” “WTF.” The trans-dimensional cyborg draws back his weapon and releases a shower of Nerf arrows. Two strike Thomblison.

ing the attack, and he skulks down the opposite stairwell of the parking garage. We return to our interview and our discussion, while the members of Arc Flash act as if nothing extraordinary has just occurred.

So I ask about their latest release, March’s Black Market Time Tech, and they tell me that it was meant to be a demo EP — something they could offer people on tour.

“We did that pretty quickly,” Osman says.

“It took like an hour. We went and basically live-tracked it at SeedCo [Studios].”

The EP turned out better than they thought it would, and the band sold out of its limited cassette run. (Arc Flash is planning a 7-inch release of new material, but the date is still to be determined.)

The distorted voice of clinical psychologist Lee Pulos opens Black Market Time Tech.

“Hello,” Pulos says over a glittering melody of keys and chimes. “As you listen to this tape, your conscious mind focuses on the music, while your inner mind hears and responds to selected subliminal messages.”

This soothing 47-second interlude, titled “Instructions,” is quickly eradicated by eight tracks of blistering, moody psychedelic garage rock. Over the next 25 minutes, the Lawrence trio unleashes a neat and noisy earworm. For the most part, these songs feature undeniable pop hooks and tight, muscled drumming. They form a cohesive unit, despite various nuances: “Titan” is high on surf-rock vibes; “Critical” comes off

Thomblison’s voice sounds layered with the instruments’ melody rather than a focal point of any song. His words are so encased in reverb and distortion that it’s nearly impossible to discern what he’s saying. Whatever subliminal messages Arc Flash has embedded in Black Market Time Tech, they are deeply buried.

Bizarre though Arc Flash is, the band members are remarkably articulate about their place in the Lawrence music scene. They take drags off cigarettes and shuffle their feet. It becomes apparent that their weirdness has been wholly accepted — if not applauded.

“I feel like everyone really influences each other,” Osman says. “People go to each other’s shows, but we’re also friends and we hang out because we like each other. There’s just a ton of rad people doing rad shit in this town, and I feel like we have an embarrassing amount of really great talent. It’s a really close-knit community, but it’s also a really inclusive community.”

These three musicians, all in their mid- to late-20s, peer at me from behind their sunglasses. They’ve survived a cyborg attack and opened up as much as they could.

acki Becker isn’t an easy person to get face time with. The owner and operator of booking agency Eleven Productions is often working in the trenches, behind the scenes at concerts in Kansas City and Lawrence. But Becker is a ubiquitous presence on the scene and beyond. (The reach of the nearly 15-yearold firm is throughout Missouri, Iowa and Nebraska.)

The Pitch caught up with Becker to discuss booking bands and staying plugged into the local scene, though she admits that she’d rather stay out of the limelight.

The Pitch: How did you get your start in the business?

Becker: Oh, it was so long ago. [Laughs.]

I started working at KJHK and I started a local show called Plow the Fields [in 1998], and had no intention on sticking around. I was planning on going to graduate school. Brett Mosiman, the owner of Bottleneck, asked what I was doing. I was like, “Oh, I don’t know, applying to grad schools, writing a play,” and he was like, “Do you want to book bands?”

And I was like, “Hell, yeah!”

It’s completely random in your life, how you think you’re going to take this one path — I thought I was going to be a college professor or write books or something — and the next thing you know, it’s the ’90s and grunge is exploding, and I’m booking these amazing, hugely popular acts and helping run the concerts and venues. Then I was booking for Pipeline [Productions], and then I took a couple years off and started my own company. It was all super-random, but I feel very lucky for it all.

You run a booking agency. Tell me what that means.

I basically put concerts in any possible place that makes sense for the area and for the Midwest. In addition, I run production at Cricket Wireless Amphitheater, so I’ve run Warped Tours and things like that in the past.

I run an event wherever somebody needs me, basically. So sometimes you’ll see me at Starlight, sometimes you’ll see me at Crossroads, sometimes at the Uptown. It depends. I’m sort of everywhere, between booking and production.

Summer concert season is high season for you, right?

For me, as an independent promoter, not necessarily. In terms of me getting hired out to run production at large events, definitely.

But booking for the club world — the 2,000 to 3,000-seat club world that I usually book in — for us, it’s usually April and October. But for everyone else, yes, the summertime is when you go outdoors and play it as big as you can.

Your job sounds glamorous, but I’m sure there are parts of it that are a struggle. Tell me about some of the nitty-gritty.

J

Anyone in the music industry, whether you’re promoting it or creating it — it is not a moneymaking venture. It is a labor of love. It is a 24/7 job at this point. Live music is very micromanaged, heavily, because we don’t really have record labels anymore, and there’s not a lot of ways for musicians to make money except for touring. It’s a lot of work, and there’s not always a lot of financial reward to it.

But it is amazing. I would never trade my life for anything else, obviously. But we’re always working, and you always have to be on top of something and three steps ahead.

When people come to work for me, I’m like, “OK, you’re going to see that music isn’t always kittens and puppies and love.” It’s a lot of hard work, and a lot of times, you put a lot of effort into something and you realize you don’t make any money, and that’s just part of it.

It’s like any band going on tour. You have this product, this thing you love to do, and it’s your passion, and then you come back and you look at the bottom line and you’re like, “Wow, we didn’t make any money! Well, what’s next?” And I think a lot of people don’t realize that running an event, you’re the first one there and the last one to leave, and sometimes it’s an 18-hour day or a 12-hour day.

People are always like, “Why are you sending e-mails at 1 a.m.?” And it’s like, “Well, I got 26 e-mails from midnight to 1 a.m., and I need to answer them.” So I love it, but you have to be really committed. And there’s something fun about that, too.

You’ve been in the business for nearly 15 years. What’s one of the biggest changes you’ve seen in the industry?

One big shift is really convincing today’s generation that live music is where it’s at. The experience that they have with live music is so different. If you look at a crowd now of kids,

Becker: the most familiar face behind the curtain they’re holding up iPhones and iPads. Their connection to the artist is to record that and retain it and share that with their friends.

It’s something really different. It’s not a body experience. It’s a body-attached-to-device experience. And making sure that those people still want to go see a live show and value it, when they can just as easily watch it on TV or their computer or phone — that’s hard.

I imagine you must get requests from a lot of local bands wanting to fill opening spots for touring acts. What advice do you have for musicians who are trying to break into the business?

There’s definitely a way to go about it.

Sending us a DM on Twitter probably isn’t gonna cut it. But once it gets to me, I’ll be pretty up-front about it. Because the truth is that most touring bands these days don’t want a local opener. But it never hurts to ask.

I have no problem going, “Hey, thanks for asking, again, not today.” You know, opening for Tame Impala or Belle and Sebastian — that probably isn’t going to happen. But some of these smaller, developing acts, you know, give it a try, see what can happen. You don’t always have to shoot for the highest.

But it’s definitely a tough thing to tell local bands “no” because that takes me more out of the local scene, just because I’m spending so much time doing national booking. But if a local band is willing to keep bugging me, I’m more likely to think of you when we do happen to have a touring act that has an opening spot available.

Brittany Howard’s voice is a stealth weapon of the first order, one moment softly promising peace, the next an explosive, devastating wail. Released in April, the hotly anticipated follow-up to the band’s smashhit 2012 debut, Boys & Girls, delivers massive grooves, blues-charged riffs and, as always, Howard’s unmistakable howl. The band’s triumph continues, and now comes the victory lap. The Shakes’ tour stops Friday at Starlight, with opener Father John Misty — another artist who has already had quite the year, thanks to his recent I Love You, Honeybear.

Lindsey Stirling brings such a hodgepodge of talent to the stage that it seems unfair to call her merely a violinist. Yes, the 28-year-old performer is a violin prodigy, but that doesn’t mean you should expect a sit-down concert Tuesday night at the Uptown. Stirling’s latest full-length, last year’s Shatter Me, blends classical, EDM and hip-hop; live, she performs those songs to some intricate and impressive choreography (Stirling having also trained in ballet). It’s some genre-bending stuff, and a convincing case that dance music and classical violin belong together after all.

Anyone familiar with Austin’s Alejandro Rose-Garcia, who performs as Shakey Graves, speaks his name with a certain reverence. The singer-songwriter first gained recognition in 2011, with his self-released debut, Roll the Bones. Back then, he performed as a one-man band — just his voice, a guitar and a makeshift kick drum. The setup’s minimalism mattered not at all. Rose-Garcia could create a sound as expansive and heated as the Texas desert, perfectly suited to his dusty, worn-in voice. On Rose-Garcia’s latest EP, the February-released Nobody’s Fool, you’ll find just such a collection of stirring, road-trip-ready tracks.

Aced Out Dear Dan: You often mention asexual people. I believe I may be one. I’m a 51-year-old woman.

I’ve been separated from my opposite-sex partner for nearly nine years. I’ve been approached by a variety of men, each one interested in becoming “more than friends.” I haunt Craigslist’s “platonic m4w” section, but each time I reach out to someone, he turns out to want a FWB or NSA relationship. It’s frustrating! That part of my life — the sex part — is really and truly over!

I had many sex partners for many years. I had a good run, and now I’m done. When I find someone attractive, I admire them in a nonsexual way. But I do masturbate. Not often. I can go two or three weeks without needing (or thinking about) release. When I do masturbate, it’s more of a “stretching activity” than a passionate requirement. Do true asexuals masturbate?

Dear NNFS: “There’s some handy-dandy research on this topic,” says David Jay, founder of the Asexual Visibility and Education Network (AVEN). Jay is the world’s most prominent asexuality activist and widely acknowledged as the founder of the asexuality movement.

Researchers at the University of British Columbia studied the masturbatory habits of asexual individuals and compared them with the masturbatory habits of people with low sexual desire (“Sexual Fantasy and Masturbation Among Asexual Individuals,” Morag A. Yule, Lori A. Brotto, and Boris B. Gorzalka, Canadian Journal of Human Sexuality). “[They found that] the majority of asexual people (about 56 percent) masturbate on at least a monthly basis,” Jay says, compared to 75 percent of individuals with low sexual desire.

“For a sizable chunk of us, this is about a sense of physical release rather than about sexual fantasy. Masturbation and partnered sex are very different things, and desiring one doesn’t mean that we automatically desire the other.”

While the fact that you were sexually active for many years, presumably happily, and always with men could mean that you’re a straight lady with low to no sexual desire, you’re nevertheless free to embrace the asexual label if it works for you.

“If you’re not drawn to be sexual with anyone, then you have a lot in common with a lot of people in the asexual community,” Jay says.

“That being said, there’s no such thing as a ‘true’ asexual. If the word seems useful, use it. At the end of the day, what matters is how well we understand ourselves, not how well we match some Platonic ideal of our sexual orientation, and words like ‘asexual’ are just tools to help us understand ourselves.”

All those crazy labels — bi, gay, lesbian, straight, pansexual, asexual, etc. — are there to help us communicate who we are and what we want. Once upon a time, you wanted heterosexual sex, you had heterosexual sex, and you identified as heterosexual. That label was correct for you then. If the asexual label more accurately communicates who you are (now) and what you want (now), you have none other than David Jay’s permission to use it.

“I also feel NNFS’ pain about Craigslist’s ‘strictly platonic’ ads,” Jay says. “But I’ve found there are plenty of people out there who are interested in hanging out if I simultaneously say ‘no’ to sex and ‘yes’ to an emotional connection. I wish NNFS the best of luck in finding some.”

Instead, they take the gay sex they’re having with their gay boyfriends for an answer. I understand why a straight woman might have more cause for concern: Very few gay-identified guys are secretly straight, while a significant percentage of straight-identified guys are secretly gay or bi.

But at some point, a straight woman should relax and take all the straight sex she’s having with her thong-wearing, ass-play-digging boyfriend for an answer.

Dear Dan: Just because a woman closes her eyes during sex doesn’t mean she’s fantasizing about something. I love to look my husband in the eyes, but sometimes when I’m trying to get off, I just need to close my eyes and concentrate on what I’m feeling. Visual input is too distracting and makes it hard to focus. I get off pretty much every time we make love, but some times require more concentration than others.

Concentrating on My Euphoria Dear COME: COME is referring to my advice a couple of weeks back for Come As You Are, a man whose wife had to lean back, close her eyes, and rub her clit in order to come. I advised CAYA to ask his wife what she was thinking about when she did that — what scenario she was fantasizing about — and not to panic if she wasn’t thinking about him.

Lots of women wrote in to say that they do — they must do — the same thing that CAYA’s wife does in order to come: Close their eyes and concentrate. A majority said they’re not fantasizing about anything in particular; they’re just concentrating on the sensations.

But a large minority said they have specific and sometimes wild/unrealizable/disturbing fantasies that they have to concentrate on in order to climax. Just as every fantasy doesn’t have to be realized, not every fantasy has to be shared. But women (and men) who are lucky enough to have a loving, supportive, secure and game partner should consider bringing their partner in. Allowing a partner to play an active role in your wild/unrealizable fantasies — through dirty talk — will make your partner feel like a part of your fantasy world (and your orgasms) and not an exile from it.
