TMA Kicks Off the New Year with Targeted Initiatives
TMA Pushing Healthcare Improvement, Healthcare Provider Stability and a Constitutional Amendment By SUZANNE BOyD
Even before the start of the second year of the 109th Tennessee General Assembly, the Tennessee Medical Association has several key legislative priorities it will be working on. The ultimate goal of the organization’s 2016 Legislative priorities is to help create a better, safer healthcare environment for Tennessee doctors and patients. Three of the five main initiatives the TMA has on its agenda are bills already in the pipeline that should pave the way for a healthcare future that is patient-centered and physicianled, holds insurance companies more accountable when changing fee schedules and payment policies as well as preserves Tennessee’s
favorable medical malpractice climate. The Tennessee Healthcare Improvement Act (SB00521/ HB0861) calls for physician-led coordination and collaboration. The bill creates a blueprint for the future delivery of healthcare by implementing a team-based care model with doctors as the team leaders in patient care coordination. The legislation calls for collaboration between physicians and advanced practice nurses to ensure patients receive care from the appropriate providers. Last month, a few weeks before Christmas, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital presented us with another world-class “first” – the St. Jude Red Frog Events Proton Therapy Center – the first center of its kind dedicated exclusively to pediatric cancer treatment. But for Thomas Merchant, DO, PhD, and Chair of Radiation Oncology at St. Jude, it was a personal milestone, as well. Even before choosing a career in medicine, as a senior studying nuclear engineering at the University of Michigan, Merchant wrote a paper on particle therapy research being done at the Swiss Institute for Nuclear Research in Villigen, Switzerland (now known as the Paul Scherrer Institute).
