South Dakota Farm & Ranch is a monthly agricultural publication dedicated to informing South Dakota area farmers and ranchers about current topics, news and the future of agriculture. This publication fits the niche of our unique farmers and ranchers of South Dakota, and the diverseness we have in our state. Although the Missouri River divides our state, we are all South Dakotans and thank the land for supporting us each and every day. You, our readers, may be livestock ranchers, or row crop farmers, and everywhere in between, however, we all have a common goal in mind. We feed and support the growing population and want the next generation to find that same love, dedication and support that agriculture can offer. To subscribe to this FREE publication, contact South Dakota Farm & Ranch.

Branding, ‘a neat tradition’ Mathews-Allen Ranch near Draper works 1,200 calves in two days

By Matt Gade The Daily Republic DRAPER — While some traditions fade over time, cattle branding with the Mathews family is something the five generation ranchers have no intention of giving up. In late May, as calving season comes to a close, the annual tradition of marking young calves with a brand marking the ranch they are a part of, family and neighbors took part in branding 1,200 calves over a two-day stretch in the annual tradition on the Mathews-Allen Ranch. “It’s kind of a celebration for us. We got calving over and it’s time to get them out to grass and we want to get our calves worked. So the neighbors come and everybody helps each other,” said Scott Mathews, a co-owner of the Mathews-Allen Ranch. “They come here and we go other places and help them. It’s kind of a neat tradition that we have.“ For the Mathews-Allen Ranch, the mark placed on the lower right hip of the calves is a pair of lazy Ys, two Ys laying on their side. The fifth generation ranch was established in 1905 and has gone through a few different brand designs, but it settled on the lazy Ys about year ago. “There’s three of us together. We each had our own brand and we just switched over to the one brand because it makes branding easier, so we don’t have to deal with sorting,” Mathews said, who’s been a partner with his dad Philip for 20 years who both partnered up later with George and Nancy Allen 11 years ago. Trying to muscle down and hold on to the calves can be a struggle for some, especially the younger participants. Ten-year-old Cole Dugan was determined to be a part of the experience and wasn’t going to let a few leg kicks stop him. “We actually talked (to Cole) after the first day. We said, ‘Hey, you just gotta hang in there. It’s not always easy.’ And he did, he did a good job,” Scott said about his stepson. “That’s part of what you see with the kids. They enjoy doing it, and they learn a lot of things through that as they get older.” Scott said branding is a tradition he expects his family to continue for years to come. “There are some neighbors that have went away from it. But (branding’s) just something we want to hold on to and keep doing,” he said.

10 SOUTH DAKOTA FARM & RANCH June 2018

From her heart to 4-H Meet the new 4-H adviser for Davison and Hanson counties, Colorado native Olivia Klinzmann By Abbie Lambert The Daily Republic How Anneliese “Olivia” Klinzmann made her way to South Dakota is a story itself. In 2015, Klinzmann was at a crossroads deciding between finishing school or entering the workforce. She was going about her daily routine when she started seeing South Dakota on Facebook, in the news, and even on license plates. She figured it was a sign, so naturally she turned to Google for answers. That is when South Dakota State University (SDSU) popped up on her browser and changed her course. “I was dead set on going (to SDSU) before I even visited the campus. I felt like that’s where I need to be. I’m meant to be there,” she said. And that is where she stayed until graduating from the university with a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science in May 2018. In March, she embarked on a new adventure as the Davison and Hanson counties 4-H adviser. The 4-H program is nothing new to Klinzmann, as she participated in the program for over 10 years while growing up in Colorado. She hopes to bring her extensive experience in both static events and animal showmanship to help youth in both counties acquire new skills and achieve their goals. “Colorado is so different from South Dakota and vice versa that I can bring Olivia Klinzmann is the new 4-H Youth Program Advisor for Davison and Hanson Counties. (Matt Gade / Republic)

Continued on pg. 12 June 2018 SOUTH DAKOTA FARM & RANCH 11

Continued from pg. 11 new things and ideas to the table and give back to the 4-H community that kind of created who I am,” Klinzmann said. She has spent the last three months meeting the counties’ 4-H members, learning their interests and creating new programs. A couple of programs she has scheduled already for this summer include judging clinics for both livestock and horses and sewing workshops. Another new event Klinzmann is really excited to introduce to the counties is a cake decorat-

ing contest held during Achievement Days. Participants will provide a cake and decorations and compete to see who can create the most eye-catching cake. Klinzmann believes the event will be a great way to involve all 4-H members regardless of their project area and she is looking forward to seeing what the kids create. “I think it’s important to have fun at Achievement Days,” she said. The most prevalent difference Klinzmann has noticed between the 4-H programs in South Dako-

ta and her home state is fewer participants. She grew up in a county that had a large number of 4-H members and a county fair that lasted two weeks. Here in Davison and Hanson counties, the number of participants is not as high, but Klinzmann has plans to help increase participation. She hopes to gain the program more exposure by encouraging 4-H clubs and the Junior Leaders to participate in more service projects throughout the community. She also plans to visit schools in the fall, presenting the opportunities

and benefits that the organization offers to both children and their parents. “It’s much more than just Achievement Days at the end of the year. It’s becoming a part of your community and giving back and learning,” Klinzmann explained, before reciting the group’s four focuses for personal development. “4-H is head, heart, hands and health, and I think that is very important,” she said.

How to protect livestock in extreme weather By Metro Creative metrocreative.com Extreme weather is seldom fun for anyone. Although people often have the means to escape inclement weather, animals are at the mercy of their caregivers. Protecting animals during extreme weather is not restricted to domesticated pets. Those who have livestock on their properties must recognize that these animals will need various levels of care as well. Animals such as chickens, cattle, goats, and llamas can be adversely affected by extreme weather. Individuals can heed these safety guidelines to avoid subjecting such animals to the stress, discomfort and illness that can result from exposure to extreme weather.

SUITABLE SHELTER One of the best ways to safeguard livestock from extreme weather is to ensure they have a place to escape

the elements. Animals can get sunburned and may overheat, so make sure shelters can block the sun’s rays on hot days while also allowing for air to circulate through the dwelling. It’s also key that the shelter be capable of accommodating all of the animals at the same time. Livestock shelters do not have to be complicated. They can be as elaborate as a barn or as simple as carports or tarps and shade cloth.

FRESH WATER Access to fresh, clean water is also essential. Dehydration can set in, particularly for animals with thick coats or those that are young or elderly. Animals tend to expend a lot of energy to cool down or stay warm, so they will need an ample supply of water to remain hydrated and healthy. Standing water can become a breeding ground for parasites and

insect larvae. Therefore, change water frequently to make sure it is sanitary. Some farm experts advise aerating troughs to help prevent algae growth or mosquito infestations. A small amount of raw apple cider vinegar may help as well. However, always discuss water sanitation methods with a veterinarian before testing them out on farm animals.

MOLD-FREE FEED Hot, humid temperatures can cause mold to grow on hay and other feed sources. Cows do not like to eat moldy hay and it can make horses ill. The University of Minnesota Extension says horses are particularly sensitive to dust from mold spores and can get a respiratory disease similar to asthma in humans called recurrent airway obstruction, or RAO, which is often referred to as heaves. Hay needs to be dried out before

it is fed to animals. Any feed should be stored in cool, dry conditions and inspected before being dispersed to livestock.

HAIR CUT Wooly animals may benefit from a shear prior to the onset of hot weather, advises the Maryland Small Ruminant group. Do not shear too short. For instance, a one-inch fleece can dissipate heat and help the sheep keep cool.

REST Livestock should not be worked and handled during the heat of the day. Their productivity levels may be diminished, and the extra exertion may affect their health. Rest will help them stay happy and healthy until the extreme weather has subsided.
