there may still be time to plant soybeans, alternative grains or a shortened corn variety. But beyond that, Bauder offered another suggestion: cover crops. “If producers do not make prevented planting deadlines and choose not to plant intended cash crops, cover crops may be an excellent alternative,” Bauder said. Refusing to plant anything could result in fallow syndrome, according to a written statement from SDSU Extension Soils Field Specialist Anthony Bly. Fallow syndrome refers to a phosphorus deficiency, which could negatively impact next year’s crop. Instead of letting fields go fallow, Bauder said cover crops benefit the soil, which can boost the big economic picture by benefiting yields down the road. SDSU Extension is currently developing three-year studies to test how cover crops affect nutrients, economics and weed control. “At a minimum it’s best to keep the soil covered with a cover crop. Adding diversity to you cover crop mix is even better,” Bauder said. While time may be running out to plant cash crops, Bauder said there is plenty of time to plant warm-season cover crops. Some varieties don’t need to be planted until July. Plus, some cover crops mature more quickly, or they require less grow-
ing time if farmers plan to simply use them for forage. And those cover crops could be used to make revenue this year. “Even for producers who may not own livestock, a forage crop can still hold economic potential. Harvesting forage or leasing grazing acres to neighbors who own livestock provides a way to create revenue on fields that may have otherwise been fallow or weedy this year,” Bauder said. At the end of the season, SDSU Extension suggests grazing only half the crop so there is still cover to protect the soil. If not using for forage, Bauder said it’s best to leave them over the winter and terminate prior to spring planting.
Getting the most from insurance
Farmers aren’t the only ones affected by the late planting season. Melanie Parsons, owner and agent with Parsons’ Insurance Agency in Viborg, said many farmers will be eligible for prevented planting payments this year. “Much of the cropland remains too wet as of today. There will be substantial losses, both in the number of claims and in dollars,” Parsons said. But despite the potentially high number of claims, Parsons said she and Continued on page 7 JUNE 2019 SOUTH DAKOTA FARM & RANCH 5
COVER CROP VARIETIES SUGGESTED BY SDSU EXTENSION
Cover Crop Mixtures: Diversifies risk from environmental conditions Hay Millet: Best suited as hay rather than grazed or cut for silage. Pearl Millet: Able to regrow after multiple cuttings, creating more production potential than hay millet. Sundangrass/Sorghum-sudangrass hybrids: Better suited to be harvested as silage instead of hay. Forage sorghum: Latest maturing and most production potential. Best suited for silage. Storable Forages: Including oat/pea mixes and grass/ legume mixes. * Make sure your chosen cover crop is compatible with recent herbicides.

other crop insurance companies aren’t worried about the payouts. Parsons said the government shares the risk on Multi-Peril Crop Insurance (MCPI) policies, which includes prevented planting insurance. “This (MCPI) is the product most frequently purchased by farmers because it includes protection for many types of losses,” Parsons said. Insurance companies manage their portion of the risk with reinsurance, as well. Farmers relying on prevented planting insurance need to follow a few rules to get the full benefit, however. They can follow Bauder’s advice and plant cover crops, but there are a few dates and restrictions to keep in mind to receive 100 percent payout, as listed by SDSU Extension: ► Cover crops must be planted after the final plant date but may be planted during the late plant period. ► Grazing or haying must not take place until Nov. 1. ► Follow crop insurance specifications for seeding rate, species and deadlines.
Both SDSU Extension and Parsons urged farmers to talk to their insurance agents in order to get a maximum payout. “Every farmer has different unit structures, guarantees, coverage levels, options, prevented planting eligibility and premiums, so it is important that he bases his decisions on his specific policy and coverage,” Parsons said.

RMOUR — With an first-hand awareness of what a tough agricultural market and conditions are doing to farmers, one South Dakota family took it upon themselves to do what they could to
help. Dwayne Werkmeister, and his wife, Evelyn, opened their home on June 7 near Armour to about 45 people to hold a meeting for neighborhood farmers to have fellowship with each other. It was a potluck gathering that not only brought people together, but gave producers a chance to air out their concerns and stress about farming with others who are in the same position. “It was an idea that my wife and I had, that a little fellowship and the chance to talk together would be good for everyone involved,” Dwayne said. The Werkmeisters have farmed for the past 40 years. Dwayne has spent nearly his entire life in the Armour area. He said people have taken the tough times recently to heart, as Armour and its surrounding areas are farm communities through and through. “These are people who care a lot about their communities and farming,” he said. “We’re all feeling it, because it trickles down.” Werkmeister admitted that solutions are tough and out of their control on a national level. Farmers
need weather to cooperate and the markets finding a way to rebound would be a big plus. The effect of trade standoffs and diminished prices on South Dakota has not been small. U.S. Sen. Mike Rounds told a Washington forum on June 13 that he believed a 20 percent drop in the price of soybeans has cost South Dakota $500 million in revenue. Soybeans remain well below the five-average in price for South Dakota, with average price of $7.89 for eastern South Dakota as of June 14. Last

year at this time, the soybean price was $8.50, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Livestock, Poultry, and Grain Market News report for South Dakota on June 10. The state has seen a climb in the average corn price to above $4 in early June, with an average elevator bid price of $4.24 on June 14. Throughout much of 2018, corn prices hovered between $3 and $3.50, but the climb above $3.50 has started in the last six weeks. Much of the consteration remains around planting, Werkmeister said. He estimated that about 10 percent of the area’s planting needs had been

met as of the time of the June 7 get-together. “Guys have just had a hard time getting anything planted,” he said. “Everyone has just been stuck in neutral.” Werkmeister said the reaction from his fellow farmers to the event was positive and neighborhood farmers showed some interest in potentially holding another party in the future. “We just thought it was important to get people together,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of good people in this area and we’re all pulling for each other. MOODY SIBLINGS PUSH EACH OTHER TO EXCEL IN RODEO By Lura Roti For South Dakota Farmers Union
Each summer, South Dakota Farmers Union feeds hundreds of rodeo athletes and their families during the South Dakota High School Rodeo Finals in Belle Fourche. Read on to learn more about one of the many families who will compete during the June 11-16 event.
P
eering through the arena fence, 8-year-old Mason Moody couldn’t wait to rodeo. “I always wanted to be a rodeo cowboy. My older sisters were in the arena and I wanted to be in the arena with them,” explains the youngest member of the Moody family. After his ninth birthday, he finally got his chance to compete in 4-H Rodeo. Like his three older sisters, Logan, Bailey and Madi, he was hooked. Now 16, his sisters will be outside the arena cheering him on during the State High School Rodeo Finals. Mason recently qualified to compete in bull riding, team roping and calf roping during the June 11-16, 2019 event held in Belle Fourche. “Winning takes a lot of practice and work in our homemade arena,” Mason explains. “Whenever there is a free moment, we saddle up, get on a
horse and practice roping.” In fact, Mason and his sisters spend anywhere from two to six hours each day practicing. And their efforts have paid off. All four siblings have qualified for the National Finals Rodeo. “We are all passionate about rodeo,” says Bailey, 21, a Dakota State University elementary/special education major. Bailey says rodeo helped her decide on a career focus. “I always knew I would be a teacher, like mom, but it wasn’t until I helped with the Special Needs Rodeo during High School National Finals that I decided to go into special needs,” she explains. “I was paired with a boy named Quinten, a kindergartener. It was an amazing experience. It opened my eyes to the

Although Bailey chose not to rodeo during college, now that she’s home for summer break, she’s practicing to ride barrels in jackpot rodeos. “You have to be motivated and goal-driven. Some days it would be easy to stay inside and not ride my horse, but if I see my sibling go out there to practice, then I’m not going to stay inside,” Bailey explains. Her younger sister and recent Sanborn County High School Graduate, Madi, 18, agrees, sibling competition is a motivator. “I’m not going to lie I want to beat Bailey.” Admittedly competitive, the siblings say succeeding in rodeo has helped them succeed in other areas of their life as well. “Rodeo was one of the things that I was good at, so it gave me confidence in other parts of my life too,” says Logan Hetland, 24, the oldest Moody sibling. Today, Logan is a nurse and lives near Artesian
where her husband, Bob, farms full time. And, losing once in a while teaches them valuable life lessons, Tracy adds. “All the kids have let some saddles slip through our hands and because of those mistakes, they’ve learned how to lose and the fact that life goes on.” “But we get to cry at the trailer for 5 minutes,” Bailey interjects. “Yes, I always told them they could go pout at the trailer for a few minutes, but then they needed to move on to the next thing because losing is part of life,” Tracy says. A high school Science teacher, Tracy spends her summers traveling to rodeos with her children. Growing up she didn’t rodeo, but like her children, she grew up riding. “I grew up on a dairy farm. We had horses and I set up barrels in the pasture and pretended to rodeo,” she says. And, her husband shares a similar connection to horses. A fourth-generation cattle producer, Perry says he grew up on horseback working cattle. Today, the family continues to use horses

to help manage their cow/calf operation. “Horses are more of a tool than a toy on our farm. We use them to move cows, doctor calves, sort cows. We use horses more than four-wheelers. They handle better,” Perry explains. “A cow cannot get away from a good horse.” For the Moodys, their passion for rodeo stems from a desire to compete and a deep affection for horses or in the rodeo world, their teammate. “I like how with rodeo, it’s just you and your horse. You develop a huge bond with your horse. Your horse is your team,” Logan explains. Most of their horses come from their Grandpa Jerry, Perry’s dad. Also a farmer, Jerry makes time to attend every rodeo with the family. “Grandpa is our biggest supporter,” Bailey says. Jerry enjoys the sport as much as the rest of the family. “Rodeo gives the kids something to do in the summertime where they can have fun competing and learn a bit about what life is about — winning and losing,” explains Jerry. This summer these truths resonate with Madi. Because, due to a basketball injury — she tore several ligaments in her right knee — she may not 14 SOUTH DAKOTA FARM & RANCH JUNE 2019

be able to compete. “I don’t like even talking about it,” says Madi, fighting back tears. “It’s my senior year and I had so many goals.” Goal setting is another trait the athletes attribute to rodeo. “Rodeo is the main thing I set goals for,” Madi says. Although she may not be competing this summer, she won’t be missing any rodeos. She currently serves as Student Vice President of the South Dakota High School Rodeo Association — one of the many goals she’s set during her rodeo career. “It opens a lot of opportunities. It’s an awesome responsibility because we represent every South Dakota high school rodeo athlete, and they are like my family,” Madi explains. One, big, extended family. That’s how the Moody’s think of other rodeo athletes and their families. “Every rodeo is like camping with your best friends,” Tracy says. “We all support each other.” And, if you lose, Mason says, his rodeo family is there for him, just like his real family. “Losing with your friends there is OK because they help you get over it, “all right, you got bucked off this one, but tomorrow you’ll get back on and get them.’”
