SOUTH DAKOTA
SOUTH DAKOTA TRADITIONS My favorite color is green and my son’s favorite color is blue, so for Christmas we decorate a green tree with blue ornaments. Even though he is only 3 years old, it’s a yearly tradition I look forward to (and hopefully he does too). This gift guide is also a tradition. We’ve been compiling it every year since 2005. Quite a few of our talented artisans have been sharing their labors of love since then. The gift makers want you to associate South Dakota with quality, and they work hard every day to make that a reality. Their efforts add to the flavor and character of life and help South Dakotans create new traditions. I am beyond blessed to work with the talented artisans around South Dakota and the staff at South Dakota Magazine! As you browse this year’s Gift Guide, remember that you’re not just wrapping a present to go under a tree, you’re sharing a story that is deeply rooted in South Dakota dirt (figuratively speaking). What’s your Christmas tradition? —Hannah Schaefer Advertising & Marketing Director

OLD TRAILS AND NEW ROADS IN SOUTH DAKOTA HISTORY The impetus for Old Trails and New Roads in South Dakota History, a topical examination of our state’s past published by Augustana University’s Center for Western Studies, is the notion that more historical research into South Dakota’s story is needed. Editor Jon Lauck, in dedicating the project to longtime South Dakota historian John E. Miller, points out the dearth of books available on the subject, concluding that “to a large extent, we are on our own in South Dakota,” to keep our history alive. Miller long dreamt of such a project, but his untimely death in 2020 has left that to other historians. Lauck rallied several of them for this effort, including Rhodes Professor of History at the University of Oxford Pekka Hämäläinen, who pens a stunning interpretation of Lakota power in the Northern Plains. The essays that follow take up a variety of topics on South Dakota history, including our borders, the history of railroads, our fickle weather, West River country, wildlife and parks, sports, radical tradition, movies, the German-language press, changing foodways, hunting and fishing and the American Indian Movement.
