FIRST THINGS FIRST
When you think of Christmas, what first comes to mind? For many, Christmas is a season of friendly gatherings and family get-togethers. Unable to contain our excitement, we eagerly await the homecoming of loved ones who have been away for far too long. In America, it’s also a time of gift-giving, as coworkers, friends, and neighbors express their affection and appreciation with a thoughtful exchange of presents. For others, Christmas is a season of strain, putting all of our relational, financial, and organizational resources to the test. As tactically as possible, we plan the holiday seating chart to minimize ongoing conflict. After hours of overtime, we brace our checkbooks for the challenge of making sure everyone receives at least something. If we catch a moment to breathe in the midst of the whirlwind, we begin to wonder where some of these traditions came from, and why we spend so much effort to maintain them. For still others among us, Christmas isn’t a season of jolly get-togethers or holiday hustling. It is, in fact, the most painful time of the year, marked on the calendar not as a day of merry excitement but of dread and the anguish of grief. With each passing year, the holidays represent an annual reminder of shattered relationships, crushing losses, and unexplainable tragedies, and the recurring memory of our sorrow only serves to multiply our tears. Christmas can come with a lot of commotion, drama, and weight. But there’s more to its meaning than this. At its heart, Christmas is a celebration of good news, the season of Heaven’s highest joy. This is the day our Savior was born, the Child in the manger who became the Man on the tree. In this season, often called Advent, we look back with adoration on the day when the King of Heaven came to Earth, bridging the infinite gap that separated a loving, sinless God from His desperate, sinful creation. But we also look forward with inexpressible joy, awaiting the day of our Lord’s return. When King Jesus comes again, He will bring all of Heaven with Him.
Because of Christmas, we have unending access to God’s hope, peace, love, and joy. Jesus came to set us free, and that means Christians ought to be the happiest, most contented people on the planet! Not because our lives are perfect and void of frustration, and not because we hide from our problems or ignore our pain. We rejoice in this and every season of our lives, because God Himself came to fill each moment with the pleasure of His presence. Because of Christmas, Christ is in our midst. And where Jesus is, true joy is sure to follow. At Southeast Christian Church, it’s our prayer that God will work in this season to open doors, providing us with opportunities to share our joy. As we invite everyone in the community to Celebrate Christmas Together, our special weeklong holiday event, we’re eager for guests, visitors, and friends of all ages to encounter the Christ of Christmas. From sheltering homeless neighbors in Hardin County to providing holiday meals for local families in need, we hope every gift will point to God’s gracious gift of His Son. And as we look back on the Lord’s faithfulness this year in the life of our church, we move into 2018 with uncontainable excitement to see what God has in store for the future. This is a season to celebrate good news. From our church family to you and your family, we wish you a merry Christmas, and we invite you to join us in singing those familiar verses: “Joy to the world! The Lord is come: let Earth receive her King!”

ne of the Christmas traditions many families enjoy is to read or tell the Biblical Christmas story. These familiar words transport us to a place where we can see Joseph and his pregnant wife Mary traveling back to Bethlehem to be counted in the compulsory census. The tension builds when they realize that the city’s available rooms have already been taken by the hundreds of travelers who have already arrived. Joseph ends up finding a place for them to stay in a stable, and there Jesus is born. After His birth, everything is resolved in one simple sentence: Mary “…wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.” (Luke 2:7 NIV®) But for many people today, this tension isn’t resolved—it’s a daily struggle for food and shelter. There is no one-sentence solution to their situation. They have to rely on the goodness of others or the generosity of benevolent agencies just to get by.
MAKI N G RO O M Before the Winter of 2014/2015, your options were limited if you were homeless in Hardin County. Once the temperature got below 10 degrees, the local community center would open to receive those who didn’t have a place to stay warm. It was a good plan, but it had a couple of issues that needed to be worked through. How do you get the word out to people who don’t have a permanent address or a phone number? And how can people get to the center if they don’t have transportation? Seeing the need, several churches in Elizabethtown came together in 2014 to discuss how they could develop a program that would more effectively serve the homeless. Their goal was to see if there was a way for those who have nowhere to live, nothing to eat, and no place to sleep could be provided with those things during the winter. Soon a plan began to develop. Not only was it a simple plan, but it brought together many of the area’s local churches. Working together during the coldest months of the year—December, January, and February—seven local churches partnered together to provide shelter for those who are homeless in Hardin County. Each church chose one night of the week throughout that three-month season to host guests and provide them with dinner and breakfast, a shower, a safe place to sleep, and a sack lunch to take with them. This idea, called Room in the Inn (RITI), didn’t originate in Elizabethtown. It was modeled after a similar program in Nashville, Tennessee, which was established in 1986. But more fundamentally, that program was inspired by the Biblical story of Jesus’ birth. The goal of the program is that the homeless of Hardin County will never hear the words that rang in Joseph and Mary’s ears all those years ago: “I’m sorry, but there’s no room for you here.”
WELCO M ED I N Many ask the question, “Is Room in the Inn working to solve the homeless problem in Elizabethtown?” Last Winter, 1,625 beds were used by guests who had nowhere else to sleep. Over 4,800 dinners and breakfasts were served to the RITI guests. As a result of the program, 11 guests secured employment and 13 were able to obtain permanent housing. Every guest was shown honor, dignity, and the love of Christ. So, is Room in the Inn working? The answer is a resounding yes! Daryl Pepper, who serves on the RITI board, shared the story of a gentleman who we’ll call Stan. Stan found himself homeless when he was in his 50’s. He made the decision that he didn’t want his life to be stuck in this season, so he decided to do something about it. Stan stayed with Room in the Inn almost every night last Winter. Each morning, he would get up and walk to his job, all the while putting money aside so that he could, one day, have enough for a deposit and rent for an apartment. Because of the support, encouragement, and prayers the volunteers of RITI gave to Stan, he was eventually able to rent an apartment! And, because of his discipline in saving, he was also able to purchase a car so he wouldn’t have to walk back and forth to work. The impact of this program has been dramatic and measurable in the lives of those in need. And others have felt that impact as well. Many hold to a stereotype about people who are homeless—that they are dangerous, on drugs, or just lazy. But those who serve with Room in the Inn have come to realize that those stereotypes are rarely true. Most people without homes are victims of hardship and challenging life circumstances. They are real people with real stories, really loved by the God who sent His Son to be born in a stable, live as a homeless preacher with “…nowhere to lay his head…” (Luke 9:58 NIV®), bear the sins of the world, and have His broken body laid in a borrowed tomb. At the Elizabethtown Campus, we’re excited to be involved in the stories God is writing this Winter, loving where we are through programs like Room in the Inn. We can’t wait to meet our neighbors at the door, welcome them in, and say, “There’s room for you here.” The next time your family gathers to read the Christmas story, just remember Jesus, born in a stable with no place to call His own. Click! You’ve just bought a present, and now you wait. In your mind, you know there will be a day when it finally arrives on your doorstep; the gift is coming. We’ve all felt the anticipation and longing as we’ve waited on a gift to arrive in the midst of weather delays and busy days—we sit there, wondering when the order will be fulfilled.
When we read the Old Testament and open up to the beginning of the New Testament, we see the power of Advent: God used people the world wouldn’t bank on to bring about the hope of the world. Abraham was too old to be a father; David was too young to be a king. The prophet Jeremiah was depressed; Jonah ran from God. Joseph wasn’t the biological father of Jesus, and people thought the whole Mary-getting-pregnant thing was pretty shady. Lazarus was dead, and Peter was afraid of death.
During Advent, we remember the anticipation that God’s people lived in for thousands of years as they longed for the coming of His salvation. Advent is Latin for “coming,” and the four Sundays before Christmas make up the Advent season. It is a time to remember all that God did and all the people God used to get to our doorstep.
These, and many others, were an integral part of the story of God’s rescue. But we can’t miss the fact that, in God’s coming to the world, He chose the people we would probably overlook. Woven through the brokenness of humanity was the grace of God. This Advent season, we remember the journey of our God who wanted to give us what we need most: Himself.

REJOICE During Advent, we rejoice that the gift has come to our doorstep. God has drawn near to us, and now we can draw near to Him. He came in the form of a baby and became very real to us, identifying completely with our sorrow, our pain, and our loneliness. God came in the flesh and died for us so that we could live with Him, in relationship and in hope. We rejoice that the One who has greatest power became a helpless baby. We rejoice that the angels declared good news of the highest hope we’ll ever know—to shepherds, people with the lowest social status. We rejoice that God chose Mary, and that Mary’s willingness to serve brought about the perfect Servant. We rejoice that God brought heaven to earth in a dirty barn, because He wants to make something beautiful out of the things that aren’t. We rejoice that the cross, so often a symbol of failed revolution, became our banner of victory. Christ has come. Because of the hope of our risen Savior, we live on the other side of Christmas. God’s people waited for a long time for this hope to come, and it finally did. The good news of this Advent season is that we can now see the whole picture. We see both the full manger and the empty tomb. Christmas will come and go, but the hope-filled season never ends for those who believe.
RESPOND We remember our need for the gift, we rejoice in the gift that brought us what we need most, and now we respond by giving the gift to others. All of us have neighbors, coworkers, and family members who long for December 25 because it is the one time in the year they feel a sense of joy and contentment. For them, it comes and goes. Soon they are left longing again. But it doesn’t need to stay that way. As believers, we carry the joy of this season to the other side of Christmas because we know who we are in Christ. We’re a people who have gone from sin to Savior, from slavery to freedom, from despair to deliverance, and from being distant from God to being close to Him. We are people who experience His nearness year round; and while we continue to wait for the day when Christ comes back, we can still respond with the joy of an empty tomb. We wait in the freedom of God, anticipating the coming perfection of our brokenness and the brokenness of the world around us. Our response this Advent season is to let the Holy Spirit fall down on our everyday lives while we wait with Godly joy and holy contentment for the day when all wrongs will be made right. The Advent season invites us to trust when God says, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways…” (Isaiah 55:8 NIV®) God’s thoughts are deeper, truer, more logical, and more fulfilling than we can ever imagine. We may find it absurd that God came in the flesh and entered our pain; we may not understand how He could allow His Son to endure such agony on the cross. But His thoughts are more just, wise, and wonderful than we could even fathom. As we welcome in the Advent season, we look to the God who saw the other side of Christmas, and still does. We look to the One who knows what will happen in our world of brokenness, and who still actively weaves together a beautiful story of redemption. We find joy in the God who lifts our eyes to heavenly hope.

“Farmers who wait for perfect weather never plant. If they watch every cloud, they never harvest.” Ecclesiastes 11:4 NLT As a recovering perfectionist, this verse speaks to the inner voice that I find myself struggling to ignore. I’m constantly waiting for life to be perfect before I can possibly be happy. The problem is, as everyone knows, nothing in this life is perfect. You’ll never go on the perfect vacation and you’ll never host the perfect Christmas family get-together. Perfection is a terrible template for your life. So, why is it so tempting to chase? God called us to be holy and faithful and enduring. Jesus promised problems and trials and temptations and distractions. He talked a lot about the temptations of wealth and sex and power and trying to control things. But, Jesus never said that perfection was the goal. Our perfection comes from Him— never from ourselves.

“You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:6-8 NIV® In our quest for perfection, we fool ourselves into waiting for the perfect time to do things. There’s no perfect time to get baptized. There’s no perfect time to get married. There’s no perfect place to have the conversation you’ve been waiting to have. There’s no perfect job. There’s no perfect time to quit (or to start) that thing. Perfection is a mirage this side of death. Jesus—who was the human embodiment of perfection—hardly had the kind of life that we’d describe as “perfect.” Think about that! Jesus was perfect but didn’t have a “perfect life” in the way we think of the “perfect life.” As a matter of fact, when I dream
Happiness is not found in chasing your personal perfection or chasing your perfect circumstances. If it is, you’ll never be happy.
“I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:12-13 NIV® Whatever you think of as perfect is the thing that becomes your god. This was a powerful realization for me. When I see something I perceive as perfect, I worship at that altar. In sports, we celebrate the perfect play. In music, we get chills from the perfect song. In nature, the amazing view leaves us awestruck. Don’t entrust perfection to just anything. Don’t place the burden of perfection on yourself, your spouse, your kids, your work, or your circumstances. Nothing can withstand that weight—except for God alone. If you worship the god of perfection, you’ll be let down. But, if you worship the God who is perfection, your happiness can ensue. It turns out that happiness is more of a paradox. Happiness is found in our vulnerabilities and in our weaknesses. When we continue to be completely loved as if our vulnerabilities and weaknesses didn’t even exist—that’s the essence of complete happiness. God has a perfect love in our imperfect relationship with Him. Though we are imperfect, and God certainly knows that, happiness can emerge in our imperfections.
“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 NIV®
Whatever you think of is the thing as . that becomes your
god
So, quit waiting to be happy. Quit waiting for everything to be made right and perfect. This Christmas season, we worship the One we know is perfect—Jesus. He perfectly loves you. He perfectly fulfills you. He perfectly sustains you. And, one day, as your faith endures, He’ll perfectly remake you. Be happy knowing that.
about what my perfect life would look like, I don’t think about the life of Jesus at all. Here’s why: my perfect dreams usually have to do with my circumstances. When my circumstances are perfect—my life is perfect. When my circumstances are less than perfect, my happiness dissipates. That’s how I think about it (and maybe you too). In contrast, Jesus’ perfect dreams were of His obedience to the mission God called Him to accomplish. This had nothing to do with His circumstances.

ne of the chairs will go unfilled at our family’s Christmas meal. A husband will celebrate the holidays without his wife for the first time in 30 years. A son will face the new, normative experience of Christmas without having Mom at the table. Memories of a friend’s cherished voice will fill the stillness between our conversation. Sometimes, those nearest to our hearts are made most conspicuous by their absence. There is something sacred in gathering around a table. The best parts of life are shared here. During the holiday season, we travel the country and cross the globe to take our seat. It may be the one place and time we’re able to share treasured moments with the people we adore. And so, when a cold, empty seat takes the place of someone we love, the weight of their absence is profoundly felt. The chasm left behind threatens to swallow us alive.
No Place to Sit
broke bread with the friends who would deny Him to show that His table is a place of forgiveness for the repentant, of redemption for the unworthy, and that no one is too far gone. All it cost Jesus was His life—a greater ransom than we will ever know.
A Costly Seat
Christmas is the story of how Jesus became the “man of sorrows” (Isaiah 53:3 ESV) so we might receive “good news of great joy” (Luke 2:10 ESV). It’s the story of creation’s King who stepped down from the throne of glory, trading His holy regalia for beggars’ rags so we may approach the mercy seat of God clothed in Christ’s righteous robe. The manger of Christmas sets the stage for the cross, as the perfect Judge of men descended from His bench to sit condemned in our place. Christ lifted His gavel of unfailing justice to drive the nails into His own hands. He absorbed the penalty of sin and put death to death, swallowing up the grave in victory for the glory of His great white throne (Revelation 20:11).
How can you sing about tidings of comfort and joy when someone who brought such joy to your life is no longer there to share it? How do you relish the Christmas cheer when the laughter of a loved one has been silenced? At times like these, the proverb rings painfully true: “Even in laughter the heart may ache, and the end of joy may be grief.” (Proverbs 14:13 ESV)
Jesus surrendered His very self to reconcile sinners to a holy God, a welcome of infinite cost into the eternal banquet hall of His Kingdom. There, the Lamb will feast forever with His church, the Bride He has redeemed (Revelation 19:7). At His table, no seat will ever go unfilled.
When there’s an empty seat at the table, we’re reminded of the undeniable, inescapable reality that there is something horribly wrong with this world. A curse hangs in the air, and all of us have tasted its poison. Death lurks around every corner; the taint of sin stains our very souls. The universe crumbles under the weight of its own rebellion, and God—Giver of all life, our consummate joy— seems so very far away.
When we see the seat left empty at our Christmas meal, it is right for our hearts to ache. But for those who are in Christ, we do not grieve without hope, as with the rest of the world (1 Thessalonians 4:13). Even in sorrow we can rejoice, because we place our bedrock confidence in knowing death doesn’t get the last word. When the empty seat seems too much to bear, we cling to the hope of Heaven’s throne.
The Other Chair
On Christmas, however, we remember another seat that was emptied. The eternal Son of God stepped down from Heaven’s throne to walk among us once again. Without casting off His divinity, Jesus Christ entered history to take the form of an infant, swaddled in rags and laid in a feeding trough. For three decades, He lived the nondescript life of an everyday laborer, kneeling next to the carpenter’s bench and wiping sweat from His brow. Once He emerged from the backwoods of Galilee to begin His public ministry, the Maker of the universe gave priority to one place: the table of sinners. Jesus brought wine to the head table at a wedding in Cana to prove the Bridegroom had finally come to claim His beloved. He multiplied bread at a Galilean picnic to declare Himself the true bread from Heaven: life-giving nourishment for world-weary souls. Christ took His seat with tax collectors, prostitutes, and Pharisees so that all may find welcome at the Lord’s table. He washed the feet of traitors and
Every holiday gathering reminds us that our Lord calls us to another sacred meal. As we laugh with those around us and weep for those who are gone, we look to the day when all the blood-bought people of God will gather around the table prepared by the Carpenter’s hand. There at the banquet of grace, all eyes will be fixed upon our Host. In our joy’s eternal increase, we will gaze with wonder at the King who left His throne to give us a seat at the table: our Savior, our Bridegroom, Jesus Christ our Lord.

We used to walk with Him in the garden in the cool of the day (Genesis 2:8). But ever since we sought to dethrone God’s authority in our lives, chasing after the enticement of forbidden fruits, chairs have gone empty at the table of every household on Earth. Ours is a damned and dying world, hopelessly unable to restore itself to God.

FROM DAVE STO N E has been an awfully long time since Southeast has had a special week-long program during the Christmas season. Do you know how long it’s been? Too long! That’s why we’re excited about Celebrate Christmas Together, an exciting holiday event happening from December 8 to 15 at Southeast’s Blankenbaker Campus. Christmas is all about giving, and this event is our gift to the community, a rallying point for our church family, and an outreach opportunity to those who might not have been to church for some time. Surveys show that Christmas and Easter are the most likely times in the year for an unchurched person to pay a visit to a church. For some people, that visit becomes the first of many. At Christmas, we celebrate Jesus coming to earth for the first time. It’s our prayer that there will be many who will come to church for the first time after they have attended Celebrate Christmas Together. you drive onto the Blankenbaker Campus grounds to begin your Christmas adventure, our friendly volunteers will guide you to one of our guest parking lots. All entrances to the main building are conveniently open; however, you’ll encounter some interesting sights and sounds outside a few of our doors! In front of the portico, step into the story of Jesus’ birth by visiting the live, interactive nativity scene featuring live animals. As Joseph and Mary marvel at the newborn baby Jesus, wrapped in cloths and laid in a manger, the Narrator reads the Biblical story of our Savior’s birth. For the perfect Christmas photo opportunity, bring your friends and family over to the Star of Bethlehem, located at the fountain outside of The Block. As you gaze upon this brilliant light display, picture the Magi crossing over the Judean wilderness to bring gifts to the King of kings. Or, you could go and see them for yourself! On the north side of the main building, encounter scenes from the first Christmas, getting up close and personal with the Wise Men and their live camels and the shepherds with their flocks. Once you decide to head inside the main building, you’ll enter the Town Square. One of the townsfolk will hand you a gift bag, which includes a card with a checklist of activities available to you at the event, as well as a map to help you locate each fun activity. If you visit all the different attractions at Celebrate Christmas Together to fill out your card, you can bring your completed checklist to the Connection Center to receive another free gift.
Our two-story Winter Wonderland boasts an enormous variety of family-friendly festivities, from an indoor snowball frenzy to a candy cane forest, from scooter rides to Christmas bingo, from arts and crafts to fun photo opportunities, and so much more. For visitors ages 8 and below, the Christmas Park features a smaller skating rink, a trackless train ride, and additional fun photo opportunities for you and your kids. Throughout the evening, you can visit one of the food courts to enjoy an inexpensive meal. And at select times each night, the Sanctuary will open to present a free Christmas program for all ages. The show includes music, live actors and dancers, and an inspiring message to help us all hone in on what Christmas is all about: the birth of our King Jesus, who came to the earth to set us free from sin, reconcile us to God, and give us the gift of everlasting life in His all-satisfying presence. This is only a small snapshot of what you can expect to encounter each night at this exciting weeklong event. We can’t possibly contain all the joy and Christmas merriment here on this page— you’ll have to experience it for yourself! So come, bring your family, invite some friends, and let’s Celebrate Christmas Together.
Upstairs and down the hall is our Christmas Village, which will take you back in time to the streets of Victorian London. There in the marketplace, you’ll meet some of Southeast’s Mission Partners at their vendor shops, selling an assortment of goodies to support their ministries locally and around the world. Here you’ll also find an indoor “ice” skating rink to glide along, just like the real thing!

In the breakneck pace of our culture, it’s often chal lenging to pause and remind ourselves of how we got to where we are now—and everything that happened along the way. Even though it can be hard to make time for the past in the present, it’s a healthy and helpful habit. In fact, the practice of intentionally marking and remembering milestones is frequently alluded to in the Bible. God commanded His people to remember His mighty acts, to celebrate them with annual festivals, and to pass down the stories to their children. The Psalms recount the many ways God rescued, preserved, and blessed Israel throughout the nation’s history. As we approach the end of another year, we want to pause and reflect on what God has done—to look back and praise Him for some of the wonderful ways He’s worked in and through Southeast in 2017. But we also want to look forward with prayerful hearts to place our hopes and concerns about the future in His hands. 18

here are your joy and contentment rooted? In a 2017 poll, only 33% of surveyed Americans said they are very happy overall. Seems low, doesn’t it? Believe it or not, that’s actually 2% higher than last year. This poll isn’t unique: studies show that we’re simply not that happy as a country. Which begs the question: if two-thirds of America’s population is chronically miserable, what can we do to add some Christmas cheer and change the mood?
If we’re rolling in cash, then our finances shouldn’t be such an overwhelming source of stress and we’ll be able to maintain more control over our lives. Surveys reveal, however, that the saying proves true: money can’t buy happiness. While Americans with an annual salary of $50,000 do tend to be happier than those who make $10,000 a year, those who earn more than $5 million are virtually no happier than Americans with a $50,000 salary. Not everyone looks outside themselves to find happiness. An

Today, selfhelp and personal improvement products and services represent a $10 billion-a-year industry, which is about the same size as Hollywood. But this, too, proves to be an empty pursuit. Americans who turn to selfimprovement services actually tend to be less happy than those who do not, even after they have successfully reached the end of said services.

According to another recent poll, many Americans look to other people—friends, family, and romantic relationships—to bring them fulfillment and satisfaction. While it’s true that we were made for community, our relationships with others can never complete us. Maybe that’s why marriage lands relatively low on the list: committed, intimate relationships don’t solve all our heart’s desires, but come with challenges as well as blessings. Among polled adults, married individuals are only marginally more happy than singles. Where, then, can we turn to find happiness in this life? In this sea of bleak statistics, one bit of data gives us hope and points the way. It’s true: fewer Americans than ever before are turning to God as their source of joy and satisfaction in life. However, Americans who are actively religious and hold firmly to their convictions tend to be happier and more content than those who do not hold any religious convictions or only nominally practice their faith. While we can’t know all the factors that go into this trend, they do seem to point to a Biblical reality: our joy can never lie in our circumstances, our relationships, or ourselves. True happiness must be firmly rooted in God Himself: “…in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” (Psalm 16:11 ESV) Those who believe in Christ have access to “inexpressible and glorious joy” because we have access to Christ Himself (1 Peter 1:8 NIV®). We were made for Jesus: to know Him, to love Him, to adore and worship Him. This is why Paul could write from a prison cell, “I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances…I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” (Philippians 4:11-13 NIV®) It’s why, even in the midst of persecution, James encouraged Christians to “Consider it pure joy…” (James 1:2 NIV®) Even at the end of his life, when Paul’s closest

GOD IS NEAR
O
ne of the great mysteries of my faith journey is how I sometimes live as though God doesn’t already know me and doesn’t see me. Sometimes I pretend like I’m all alone. I do this when I sin and don’t want to be outed. I do this when I’m struggling with life and feeling isolated. I do this when I’m feeling in-control and my life is going well. It’s so tempting to pretend like God doesn’t know me, my situation, or my feelings. It’s tempting to pretend that He’s distant, far-away, or detached from my reality. Christmas is all about commemorating and celebrating the birth of Jesus. It’s the day God proved He’s not far away at all. He is Immanuel— God with us. If you’re like me and you get tempted to forget the nearness of God, perhaps the best gift you can receive this Christmas season is time spent reconnecting with Him. One of the techniques the Enemy uses to lure your heart away is by changing your mind about how you see the world and your place in it. This is easy to do, because all creation has been scarred by sin. It’s not just humanity that’s broken—literally all of the created world bears the marks of sin and destruction. When you start changing the way you view the world, you begin the process of distancing yourself from God. Jesus gives the gift of forgiveness and absolution for the sin that marks the created world. The reason God so often feels far away is because we are detached from God in our sin. It’s not just a feeling—sin brings real separation between God and humanity. But Jesus offers a new way to connect with God. It’s not found in improving our behavior; it’s found in trusting Christ. When Jesus came into our broken world, He experienced the fullness of what it is like to live as a human being. He knows your pain and your struggle, and He came to set you free. So don’t hide in the wilderness of your struggle. Connect with God in the presence of His forgiveness. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 NIV®

Long before Jesus came, His birth was foretold. Over 600 years before Jesus was born, these verses were penned about how and where He would come into the world. Not only would Jesus be born of a virgin girl—a miracle in and of itself—but God communicated this hundreds of years before sending Jesus into the world!
THE FAITH OF MARY READ | LUKE 1:26-38
Mary was engaged to be married. Although she was a virgin, God told her she would conceive a child by the Holy Spirit. Most of us don’t like our plans changing when it comes to small, menial things—but this was a massive change of plans for her! When unmarried Mary turned up pregnant, you can imagine the rumors swirling around her community. Imagine how she must have responded when people asked about the Father of her child!

For everyone who follows Jesus, there comes a point where we must believe and trust God—even when it makes no sense. At our darkest points, we need to trust God. At the point when people tell us to walk away, we must trust in Him even more. Undoubtedly, Joseph was struggling to accept that Mary’s pregnancy was a miracle that came through the power of the Holy Spirit.
JESUS’ BIRTH READ | LUKE 2:1-20
The first people who received news of the Messiah’s long-awaited birth were not the powerful, the elite, the educated, or the well-connected—but simple shepherds. They were working the nightshift, keeping watch over their flocks late into the evening. These are the kinds of people God decided should hear the good news first: the humble, the ordinary, those overlooked by the world.
