FIRS T THINGS FIRST
GOD STILL SPEAKS There is no power in creation, there is no force in all the world that compares to a single utterance of the holy voice of God. Imagine that moment when time began, when the eternal, ever-present Lord brought forth something that was never there before. For endless ages, God had existed alone: perfect, unchanging, beautifully independent. But with one commanding declaration of His almighty voice, eternity gave way to time and creation sprang into being. “And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.” (Genesis 1:3 NIV®) He called every color out of the darkness and sang forth galaxies, forming sun and moon, heaven and earth, simply by speaking His heart’s desire. With a word, the divine Poet filled the world with every kind of creature that would inhabit the land, sea, and sky. And then, stooping down to the dust, God breathed a whisper into the earthen lungs of the first man. The Lord didn’t merely make pets and servants. With the tender sound of His voice, He formed a family for Himself. When God speaks, things happen. At His every word, the whole universe takes notice. King David saw it firsthand: “The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is majestic.” (Psalm 29:4 NIV®) When John heard the voice of God, he described it as a mighty torrent, “…like the sound of rushing waters.” (Revelation
1:15 NIV®) The author of Hebrews was left in wide-eyed wonder by the lifegiving intensity of God’s voice, capable of “…sustaining all things by his powerful word.” (Hebrews 1:3 NIV®)

GALAXIES And so, it is a shocking thought that all of us have disobeyed the word of our Father in sin. Everyone has willingly rebelled against the royal decrees of our perfect God, committing cosmic treason with every transgression. But sin doesn’t get the privilege of having the last word. The Creator who breathed His word of life into our lungs is also the Redeemer who breathes His Spirit over us to form a new creation, who has taken our breath away in sublime wonder by sending His Son to atone for our disobedience. Paul said it best: “For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.” (2 Corinthians 4:6 NIV®) As the eternal Son of God, Christ is “the Word” (John 1:1 NIV®), the voice of the Lord in action. As people heard His teaching, they were astonished by Jesus’ powerful words: “No one ever spoke the way this man does!” (John 7:46 NIV®) With every word, Christ offered restoration, renewal, and redemption to all who would receive it. And when He stood at a friend’s
graveside, Jesus gave us a foretaste of the future hope we have in Him. With a singular command, He gave the dead man new life: “Lazarus, come out!” (John 11:43 NIV®) Later, as the spotless Son took our place on the cross, He announced His victory over the sin of a rebellious world with one final, dying shout: “It is finished.” (John 19:30 NIV®) As people saved by grace, adopted back into the family of God, our entire lives are lived in light of His life-transforming Word. The Lord is telling a story in and through our church as we cross the threshold of a brand-new year, reflecting on His past victories and resolving to seek His leading throughout 2018. With Scripture in hand, what do you hear the voice of God saying to you for the year ahead? For some, God is calling us to make New Year’s resolutions to repair some areas in our lives that have long awaited tenderloving care. For others, He’s telling us it’s time to muster our courage and look for opportunities to invite a friend or coworker to church. Maybe this is the year God is inviting us to pursue a new beginning and find support at Southeast’s Care Ministry. Or, maybe the thing we need most is to rest, replenish, and spend treasured time in the rejuvenating power of God’s living Word. We believe the Lord has wonderful things to say to us this year. With His breath in our lungs, we each have our own story to tell and His Good News to share. As we trust in His new-morning mercies, we press on, awaiting that great day when redemption’s work is done, listening for the final fulfillment of that hope-laden promise: “Behold, I am making all things new.” (Revelation 21:5 ESV)

was a year marked by fresh starts and renewal at Southeast. We began the year after celebrating Victory Weekend, our annual reflection on God’s redeeming power and our prayerful anticipation of His direction for the future. Before January even came to a close, the Lord had already blown our expectations out of the water as more than 500 people made the life-changing decision to follow Christ and be baptized during Southeast’s Hitting Reset sermon series. That same month, the Lord enabled our church family to extend its reach into a brand-new community, as our fifth campus opened its doors in La Grange, Kentucky. As Winter gave way to Spring, Kyle Idleman released his latest book, Grace Is Greater. During that time, he and Lead Team Pastor Matt Reagan preached from Hebrews 12:15, challenging our church family to let no one miss out on the life-changing reality of God’s lavish grace. Even after all we’ve done, even after all that’s been done to us, the grace of Christ is greater still. On Easter, God proved the power of His grace as we welcomed more visitors than ever before to worship with us at each of our campuses. Thousands of friends, neighbors, and guests from throughout our region joined us to encounter the new and living hope of Jesus’ resurrection. We’re still hearing stories of the lives that were profoundly changed after someone in our church family extended a simple invitation to a coworker or family member. Summer saw its share of renewal as students of all ages attended Bible & Beach, MIX, and our SE!Kids Summer Camp. At Country Lake and Daytona Beach, some students encountered the love of Jesus for the very first time. Others made the commitment to be baptized. Many of our high school students cultivated Kingdom dreams, resolving to enter ministry in order to share the message of Christ’s redemption in their schools and with the world. As Autumn came around, God continued to amaze us as Southeast’s newest campus opened in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, allowing us to reach people in Hardin County with the Gospel. And the Lord’s calling on our church has extended well beyond Kentucky and Indiana. This year alone, God supplied us with the resources to help plant new churches in Florida, Washington DC, South Africa, France, and Nigeria. The Gathering, which launched this September in Harlem, New York, marks Southeast’s 50th church plant. We marvel at God’s provision through the generosity of our church family, which has allowed us to raise up Christ-centered, crossshaped bodies of believers around the globe.

All of this is part of the mission to which God has called us: Connecting people to Jesus and one another. This is the heartbeat that drives our every waking moment as a church. This is also why we host large, ongoing events like Shine, FamilyPalooza, and the Global Missions Health Conference. Most recently, our desire to point people to Jesus led Southeast to host a new Winter outreach event, Celebrate Christmas Together. As thousands of visitors enjoyed a week of holiday cheer at our Blankenbaker Campus, they encountered the Christ of Christmas, the incarnate Son who came to redeem us, restore us, and bring us home to God.

It’s only fitting that 2017 came to a close with another Victory Weekend. It was a year of true triumph for the Kingdom of God—not because Southeast opened new campuses, launched new church plants, or hosted new events—but because in the great and ordinary moments alike, the Holy Spirit mightily worked to transform hearts, heal broken lives, and draw eyes to the conquering King who puts death to death and makes everything new. As we enter into 2018, let’s resolve to walk boldly in the power of our Savior and Lord, the One who redeems everything He touches and leaves us wonderstruck with each new day. “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! ew Year’s Day. It comes every year like clockwork. And coupled with that, resolutions. The tradition of New Year’s resolutions dates as far back as ancient Rome, and it is a reminder that people don’t want to stop believing in new beginnings. We love a good comeback story, and each January 1st becomes an open invitation for everyone—no matter who you are, what you believe, or where you come from—to enter into the story. When Christmas ends, we often find ourselves facing the tension of joy for a new year and sadness that the holidays are over. New Year’s resolutions always bring about that same tension of joy and sadness. We tend to make the same resolutions from the year before that we failed to achieve, and yet we hope for a different outcome each year.

Making a resolution is the easy part. It requires no action, and simply intending to keep our resolution satisfies our instantgratification culture. The resolution list makes us feel good in the moment, so we naively predict that we will feel good about it in the future.
Our culture frames New Year’s resolutions around the idea of preparation, so that we can be what we’ve always wanted to be.
But then we get on the treadmill and our legs feel like noodles. Instantly, the walk from the couch to the car, and from the car to the gym, feels like participating in the IRONMAN. We would rather have two 15-pound bags of potato chips in our hands than weights. The idea of the resolution felt so good, but once you are actively trying to participate in it, the couch feels so much better.
• We prepare to encourage others by writing the names of people we want to reach out to.
• You repair so that you can truly prepare.
• We prepare to learn by enrolling in the class, buying the books, and clearing the schedule.
Each Day to the Full
The Day that Never Came Last year, my husband and I decided to try the Couch to 5K app on our phones, which is exactly as it sounds. The goal is that you will no longer nestle comfortably on that couch that molds ever so perfectly around your body. Instead, you will be victoriously passing the finish line of a 5K when this app is done with you. Day One was amazing. We ran one minute and walked nine for an hour all around our neighborhood. On approaching our house, we looked at each other with a smirk and a slight nod. We were really doing it! Then, Day Two came around, and the weather had dropped by 30 degrees. We looked at each other and said, “It’s too cold today. You know, we don’t want to shock our muscles or slip on some ice! We can run tomorrow.” And by tomorrow, we really meant in a year, because that was one year ago and we are still on Day Two. There was such a sense of instant gratification at the idea of running a 5K. But when we got down to it, it didn’t feel so fun to execute.
A New Day Dawns For many of us, we anxiously await the new year as a symbolic gesture of a fresh start. Then once we fail, we become discouraged and overwhelmed, finding ourselves looking back over the last year and still being on Day Two of our big plan.
• We prepare to exercise by getting the clothes and the gym membership. • We prepare to eat healthy by buying the right food and finding the right recipes.
He wants to repair you so that he can prepare you for more than you could ever ask or imagine.
For some of us, though, preparing only sets us up to fail because of the baggage weighing us down that we have never dealt with. No matter where we go, or what we do, it follows us and handcuffs us until we are left in a worse condition than when we started. If that’s you, 2018 can be the year when you stop preparing resolutions in hopes of a quick fix, and start repairing some areas of your life so that you aren’t held back anymore. Committing to a year of repairing allows God to do the work of freeing you completely so that you can live unleashed.
• You repair so that what was done to you does not define who you are anymore. • You repair so that the legacy you give won’t be the same legacy you were given. • You repair so that grieving isn’t stifled and later manifested in different ways. • You repair so that you no longer live beyond what you can afford.
In John 10:10 NIV®, Jesus says, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” Jesus wants to bring true restoration to your life—today and every day after. There is no limit to how He wants to use you. There is no place He wouldn’t go to free you. He went to the grave so that you could live in His grace. He wants you to live free, so that you live out who He designed you to be. When you embrace what needs to be repaired, you can execute what you’ve prepared. As the clock strikes midnight and a new year begins, rest in the God who wants fullness for you—mind, body, and soul. Let your resolutions be saturated with His wisdom, discipline, and healing power. He wants to repair you so that he can prepare you for more than you could ever ask or imagine. Then, when resolution time comes around, you can walk confidently into your prepared goals with a spirit of love, power, and self-discipline.

S
ometimes, as Christians, our response to the simplest question can lead to life transformation. When some of Jesus’ new disciples asked Him where He was staying, He simply invited them to “Come and see.” (John 1:39 NLT) Later in this same chapter of Scripture, when Nathaniel heard the news that the Son of God was found, he asked if this could really be true. Philip’s response to that question was “Come and see for yourself.” (John 1:46 NLT) Several years ago, before I had entered into full-time ministry, I had a “come and see” moment with one of my coworkers. During that time, I was transitioning into a new role that allowed me to meet some new people at work. I was also given the daunting task of fulfilling my old responsibilities while learning and working in my new role. This turned out to last an entire year. In that season, my faith was strengthened as God carried me through the challenges set before me. Daily Bible reading habits naturally improved, because I knew I needed to start my day at the office on the right foot before things got too hectic. Little did I know, God was also moving in the life of one of my new coworkers, and He was going to use me to nudge her along in her next step with Him.
JUST ONE QUESTION Laurette was a nice lady from New York who would later become a dear friend to my wife and me. Having a front-row seat to the challenging season I was working through in the office, she one day decided to tell me she couldn’t understand how I was managing to do both jobs and manage all of that stress, especially with small children at home. After complimenting me on my ability to even function in that way, she added that she was impressed with my ability to do it all with joy and a smile on my face. I thanked Laurette for her kind words. But before I could say anything more, she uttered one of the most important
questions a Christ-follower can hear. Laurette inquired, “How are you able to get through this?” Without hesitation, I told her the truth: Jesus was the source of my strength and hope, and God was pulling me through the hard times. I simply could not have done it without Him.
scoop from her the next day at work, even without having to ask her what she had learned the night before. A passionate desire to follow Jesus overcame her, and I had the privilege of baptizing Laurette less than a year after her first visit to Southeast.
Somewhat surprised, Laurette shrugged and nodded, as if to say, “Well…okay then.” Viewing that situation as an open door, I then asked about her relationship with God, since she and I hadn’t known each other very long.
SEE FOR YOURSELF
A SIMPLE INVITATION Laurette grew up attending church in New York, but had stopped going years ago. After moving around a few times before finally getting anchored in Louisville, she never quite settled on a place to go and worship. As she told me this, it seemed like the perfect time to invite Laurette to church, so I invited her to join me at the Crestwood Campus where I was attending. I may have even guilted her into coming as I told her I was in the worship band, and she could see me play music during the service. Funny thing is, she almost didn’t believe me! I guess Laurette couldn’t picture me as a musician, since my day job kept me behind a desk, wearing khaki pants and company logo-wear! Almost with an I-told-you-so attitude, Laurette came to Southeast on the very next weekend when I was playing in the worship band. Then, something amazing happened. When we met up afterward, Laurette exclaimed that it was a wonderful service, and she looked forward to coming again the following week! After a few weeks, we began sharing spiritual conversations at work, and her relationship with Jesus began to truly blossom. Before I even had a chance to recommend a next step in her walk with Christ, Laurette had already signed up for a Bible study at Southeast. I would get the
To this day, you will still find Laurette plugged into the life and ministry of Southeast. Knowing that God graciously pulled the strings to invite her into a relationship with Him, I am so grateful that He chose to give me a role in getting her to church and to witness her decision to follow Him. You never know what God might do with your response to a simple question. Here’s one for you: Who can you invite to church this year? Are you thinking you’ll always have to pull teeth to get that friend or coworker to say yes? Are you afraid of not knowing the best time to ask? Consider the interaction Laurette and I shared. I didn’t even bring up the topic of church out of the blue! God opened a door with an everyday conversation, and He can do it for you too. Keep your eyes peeled for God’s “come and see” moments. When a neighbor, a coworker, an old friend, or a family member asks what makes you tick, or how you’re able to cope with tragedy or work through hard times, what will you say? How will you respond when God opens a door?

had to go to the first three classes; and then if I hadn’t gained anything, I could stop. And that was my plan: to attend the first three classes and then be done. It was a cold January day when my husband of eight-and-a-half years uttered the words, “Baby, I’m leaving,” as he casually sipped his Pepsi. I was shocked. I knew we had drifted apart, but I figured that was due to hectic schedules, busy jobs, volunteering at church, and my daughters being in high school with all that entailed. You know, life! I remember clinging to him and unashamedly begging him to stay as tears streamed down my face, ensuring him that we could work it out, that God had brought us together and had a plan for us. To no avail. He left and never returned. I was devastated. I never saw it coming. This can’t be happening…again! What is wrong with me? I have to save this! I can’t have two failed marriages! What a loser! Why am I not enough? How will I provide as a single mom? Am I really so unlovable? My heart literally hurt and I questioned how anyone could live with this kind of pain.
What Now? But in the midst of all those questions and the pain, I had hope. I can’t explain it, except it was a peace that surpassed my understanding, just as God promises us in Philippians 4:7. It became clear that we both should have sought counseling. This was a second marriage for both of us; what I didn’t realize at that time was that neither of us had healed from or dealt with our first failed marriages. I was introduced to an amazing counselor, Debbie. She helped me walk through the process of grief, loss, depression, and all the other emotions that are part of healing. After several months of meeting with her, she suggested DivorceCare, a 13-week workshop to assist in healing from separation and divorce. I wasn’t interested. Surely I didn’t need that! How in the world would it help me to share my deepest pain and embarrassment with others? Hello, this was my second separation and divorce! But I respected and trusted her. So I agreed—but only after she promised I just
That dreaded night came when I had to go to the first session. At a snail’s pace, I made my way up to the fourth floor of Southeast’s Blankenbaker Campus, and then down the “hallway of shame” to the classroom. With my head down and my heart racing, I walked in.
A New Song A kind woman named Linda greeted me with a warm smile and introduced me to the facilitators for the classes. After she gave me some paperwork to fill out, I went to find a seat. Then, someone called my name—a woman who was filling out paperwork like me. It was a former coworker! I was so glad to see her! I mean, I hated that she was in a divorce class, but it felt like a little gift from God that I’d have someone to endure this class with. She knew a couple of the other participants and introduced them to me. Suddenly, I didn’t feel so alone. Once the class began, I learned the facilitators had all experienced divorce, yet they seemed to be thriving as individuals. This gave me hope that maybe someday I could get there too. We broke off into two small groups after watching a DVD comparing divorce to a tornado that threatened to destroy our world. Preach it! I happened to be in the group of a facilitator named Jeff, and I learned that he, too, had been divorced twice. What?! Again, this felt like a little gift from God; I’d been sure that I was the only one there going through a second separation. Well, the first three classes came and went. I kept going, and didn’t miss a single one. DivorceCare became a safe refuge, free from judgment and full of grace. I made new friends. I learned so much and began journaling, which God used to draw me nearer to Him than I had ever been before. Psalm 34:18 (NLT) came alive to me: “The LORD is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.”
my disappointment, my anger, and my prayers. After seven years, these pages became a book entitled A Song to Sing. This is my story of God’s healing, and I published it with the prayer that He would use it to help others.
T his Is the Year That first class was 12 years ago. Since then, I’ve facilitated more than thirty 13-week DivorceCare workshops, walking alongside others experiencing divorce. My favorite part about facilitating these sessions is having a front-row seat to experience God healing hearts! That never gets old. As we start this new year, it is the perfect time for a new beginning. I know it is scary to take that first step, but if you are going through a divorce, or if you have been divorced for some time but you’ve never walked through the healing journey, I hope you will consider joining us in the Care Ministry. Several of our campuses hold ongoing Care Groups. At the Blankenbaker Campus, our next DivorceCare workshop begins next month: Tuesday, February 13, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. No matter what group interests you, you are most welcome to join us. G
od built rest into Creation. Even He—the God powerful enough to create the world—rested. Did God need to rest? Was He really that tired? I don’t think God rested because He was tired. I think God rested because He knew we would be. Maybe there’s no better time than now to be reminded about how much we need rest. Each year, November and December are full of so many memories, so much fun, so many places to go, and so many traditions to keep up with. When we get to the New Year, the bright lights fade, and we can feel like we’re running a little ragged. Add to that the pressure of New Year’s resolutions to add more, do more, and get better, and it’s a recipe for burnout.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS Sometimes I compare the holiday season to one big “I agree to the terms and conditions” button. You know the little check-boxes that come up when you log into iTunes or when you update your phone. It’s that little button that turns all of us into liars. You can see the 16 pages of legal jargon describing the contract you’re about to sign electronically. You see it, and you know you’re supposed to read it. Then you see the empty little box next to the phrase, “I have read and agree to the terms and conditions.” And you know that with one click of a button, you can skip to the next page. So, you take a look at the legal jargon, you look at the button, and you make the decision: CLICK! We all do it! And it’s a bold-faced lie! I mean, who knows what we’re agreeing to? I have no idea what’s in those agreements—I’ve never read one. And neither have you!
We didn’t read the “holidays” contract, either, but I think if we had the ability to read ahead and realize what we were signing up for, it would have said something like this: • You agree to make traditions, spend time with family and friends, and take some time off work. (That’s a pretty good deal!) • You agree to set off the smoke alarm 6 times while cooking a 15-pound bird in your oven. (Ouch…Now it’s hitting a little closer to home, isn’t it? But I guess it’s not really so bad yet.) • You agree to attend at least 12 Christmas parties and wear an ugly Christmas sweater to at least one of them. • You agree to put Christmas lights up at your house—even though you hate doing it. • You agree to pretend that a certain “someone” exists, and give him all the credit for the presents you bought. (Hey, at least you get to have his Christmas Eve cookies and milk once the kids go to bed! By the way, this part of the “holidays” contract is called “The Santa Clause.”) • Speaking of cookies… You agree to gain 7-10 pounds. Yearly. No exceptions. (This is called “The Sweatpants Clause.”) • You agree to try to bake the “EASY Reindeer Candy Cane Cupcakes” you found on Pinterest that looked perfect. You also agree to make a mess trying to bake them, fail at least twice, then eventually throw in the towel and stop at the grocery store for good old store-bought cookies as you drop the kids off at school. • You agree to keep your kids up late playing with cousins, feed them nothing but sugar, and force them to be “happy” around tons of strangers for 30 straight days. (See how that goes for you!) • You agree to mediate between, get frustrated by, and participate in family drama. • And you agree to do it all with a smile on your face because— after all—it’s “the most wonderful time of the year!” Sound familiar? It sounds familiar to me, too. It also sounds exhausting. And it’s not just around the holidays, either. We do this kind of thing to ourselves all the time. We work just a little extra, stay up a little later, keep our foot on the gas for another week, sign the kids up for another activity. We wear ourselves out. After days and days of hard work and frantic schedules, we do it again the next day. And the next week. But God—after six days of hard work—rested. God implemented the Sabbath day—a weekly day of rest—as a way of ensuring that we stayed healthy, that we didn’t overdo it. Now, some people who tried to follow God took this principle and turned it into an overbearing rule. It became such a strict law that I can hardly imagine that the Sabbath day was actually restful. People were probably just nervous the whole time that they were accidentally doing a little too much work and were going to get caught by the religion police. But that’s not what God intended.
GOD IS THERE I want to point out one little detail about that original Sabbath day in Genesis 2 that I think makes a huge difference in our understanding of a day of rest. In Genesis 2:3 (NIV®), it says that “God blessed the seventh day and made it holy….” You might just skim past that little word “holy” as a typical churchy word that
you may or may not understand, but you know it generally has something to do with God. But there’s so much more to it! Throughout the Bible, when things are called “holy,” it’s because they are places and times where Earth and heaven intersect— places where God’s presence is. For example, in the Jewish temple, the “holy of holies” was special, because it was the place where the presence of God was. Do you remember when Moses talked with God at the burning bush? God told Moses, “This is holy ground” (Exodus 3:5 NIV®). Why? Because God’s presence was there! I can think of a couple times in Scripture when people got a glimpse into God’s throne room, and they heard a whole crowd worshipping Him and saying, “Holy, Holy, Holy!” Here’s one other example: what do we God wants to Christians call it when God lives inside of us to guide us, convict us, redeem you, to and help us? The Holy Spirit. Things are holy because God’s presence is there. And the Sabbath is no different. That little clue in Genesis 2:3 tells us that when we honor God’s wise principle and take intentional time to rest, God will be there. Feeling tired? Take some time to rest. Feeling lonely, worn out, stuck in a rut? Take a Sabbath. Feeling like you need more of God’s presence in your life? Rest. God will meet you there. God wants to redeem you, to restore you, to refresh you. And when you set aside some time, rest in Him, and let your body and mind soak in His presence. It will give you new life.

RESOLVE TO REST This time of year, you might be tempted to make a New Year’s resolution to do something new, start a new habit, or add more to your schedule. Maybe you need to do some of that. I don’t know for sure. But what I do know is that we all need a Sabbath. What if your New Year began with a commitment to rest more? What if your New Year began with a commitment to be intentional to take a day off? What if you filled some of that rest time specifically with God’s Word? The Sabbath is holy—that means that God will meet you there. So let Him refresh you. Let Him restore you. Give Him time each week to redeem and rejuvenate you. When you do, I’m confident that— like Moses—you’ll be able to hear and see God more clearly than ever before.

The Inner Resistance of Faith
S
ometimes, the biggest lie we believe is that there’s more to be gained from disobedience than from obedience to God. Satan, whom Jesus calls “the father of lies” (John 8:44 NIV®), has a singular purpose on this Earth: to convince you that a lie is the truth. For him, it doesn’t really matter what the lie is, because all lies are untruths which can divide us from God. Living a faithful life means maintaining a commitment to inwardly resist believing the lies that besiege us. These lies are all around us: Your past defines you. God couldn’t possibly love you. You deserve better than that. You are your income. You’re really something. You’re really nothing. God doesn’t really exist.

A little lie taints the whole truth. Why? Because a lie detaches you from reality. This is true in any relationship. Want to ruin a work, romantic, or friendly relationship? Lie. Want to ruin your relationship with God? Trust a lie. “…Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” James 4:7 NIV® Refuse to accept what Satan tells you is true. Refuse to accept what sin would like you to believe. We all wrestle with an inner resistance to faith. Resist the lies that are fighting for a place in your heart. In a 2010 article in the Journal of Abnormal Psychology, 81 former political prisoners in East Germany, all of whom had been subjected to horrible abuses, were examined. It was found that about two-thirds of the adults suffered from PTSD, and the other third did not. Here’s what’s interesting: Of those who did not suffer from PTSD, the correlating factor was their inner resistance to believe what their captors said about them. Many were forced to sign false confessions to crimes and resigned themselves to their fate. But those who resisted were preserved emotionally and found without any negative symptoms. No matter how you’re struggling, look to Jesus as your strength to fight back with faith. Resist the accusations of Satan. Resist the temptation to agree with Satan. Resist resigning yourself to the fate of unbelief. Christ makes all things new; turn to Him in faith to find rest in the fight.
